You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You’re holding hands with two girls.

One is your girlfriend. One is a future mob boss.

Alicia Manfredi is a slight, wiry girl with long eyebrows and a head of long, silvery-blonde hair. Something about her composure lends her otherwise reedy frame a sense of great tensile strength – the cliché with people like her is that you expect them to snap in half under a slight breeze, but you get the impression from Alicia that she’d fall over in one entirely straight motion, undamaged and unfazed.

The street around you seems cast in dull, cold colours, the pall of invisibility angling things very slightly toward the Stygian. The night is already dark, thick with clouds, and so even the brightest lights appear muted and cold. It unnerved Alicia at first (it unnerved you at first, too), but she seems to have gotten used to it.

The Russians didn’t appear to have treated her badly. Aside from a blindfold and a few days without showering, she seemed mostly unharmed when you found her inside the yacht. She’d scowled at your through the dark fabric over her eyes, assuming you to be one of her captors until you snapped the handcuffs keeping her immobile.
>>
>(2/2)

She seemed pretty surprised to find that her rescuer had horns and claws and weird teeth. What was more surprising, apparently, was that he hadn’t brought a car and expected her to walk back. That had taken a moment to process.

You’ve no idea where the girl with the horrifying glass-related powerset went – you’re assuming she booked it while you were in the yacht. Hopefully you’ll never see her or any other Russian ever again.

You walk along the edge of Brooklyn, a slight limp in your stride. Up ahead, you can just about make out the brilliant pink glow of the Tabbycat.

>[X] Ask Alicia about der Jack

It dawns on you, as you approach the club, that you probably won’t have many chances to talk to Alicia once she’s back with her grandfather. And there’s one little thing that’s been nagging at you since you picked her up.

“Hey. Alicia.”

She glances up at you, her brow set in a stern frown.

“The people who were keeping you on that boat…” You try to keep your voice even. She’s been through a traumatic something or something, so you’re supposed to be calm and stuff. “Did you ever hear them talking about something called ‘Jack’?”

“I know what Jack is.” She huffs, flicking a lock of moon-silver hair across her shoulder. “Don’t talk to me like I’m a child.” Urgh. “And no, I didn’t. They didn’t talk around me, not once.”

Dang. You guess you were reaching a little there – even if the Russians hadn’t been quite so clandestine about their involvement, they probably wouldn’t have discussed anything sensitive with Alicia around. Not in English, anyhow.
>>
>(2/2)

You flicker back into visibility as you come up to the club.

The bouncer spots you coming and, an expression on his face that can only be described as ‘wide’, allows you to pass. You make your way through the velvety corridor into the club proper, a rush of alcoholic scents and jazz notes washing over you.

Someone drops a bottle. It shatters against the bar in the center of the club, the employee serving drinks staring at you, mouth open.

“Hey.” You say, approaching them. “Could you get Ms. Hardy?”

The young woman nods, her eyes remaining glued to the general vicinity of your head, and runs up the stairs.

It’s not long before Ms. Hardy descends the spiral steps, looking – for the first time you can recall – a fair bit taken aback.

“That was…” She glances down at the young girl, her eyes softening slightly, before turning her gaze back toward you. “…faster than anticipated.”

>[X] You want to speak to Silvermane again, make sure he keeps his word.

“Yeah, thanks.” In another universe, you think you might have said something cooler, but in this one you’re tired and hungry and you want to go home. You still have a few things to finish up, though. “Is Silvermane around?” You feel Alicia tense up slightly at the mention of her grandfather, and you get the distinct impression that she’s glaring daggers up into your back. “I want to be sure he’s satisfied.”

She nods, her eyes occasionally straying down toward Alicia.

“Mr. Manfredi is a call away. I imagine that he will be very satisfied indeed.”

Still, you’d like to be sure. You wait at a small table out in the open, occasionally watching the jazz group playing off in one corner. Ms. Hardy gets a plate of fries served up for Alicia (you were expecting spaghetti, honestly), and you pick at it (read: you take most of it). Alicia stares at you from across the table. You’re not sure if she’s glaring, or if she’s just mildly interested your appearance – you don’t think she has the ability to NOT look hostile.

“Your scarf is cool.” She says, eventually.

“Huh?” You glance down. Sure enough, you’re wearing your dark green Slytherin scarf. “Oh… right.”

You suddenly feel a rush of embarrassment. Did you really negotiate with a crime lord in a Harry Potter scarf? He must think you’re a total feeb.

It’s approaching 3:20 in the morning when Silvio Manfredi enters, flanked by his retinue of extremely burly men. He glimpses Alicia, and… and every trace of the cold, razor-toothed mob boss you met earlier seems to vanish.

“Grandpa!”

She rushes across the club, straight into his arms. It’s almost unnerving, seeing Silvermane laugh and smile and generally just look… happy. Makes it hard to see him purely as an obstacle, as something human-shaped but ultimately without the vital fires of kindness and warmth.
>>
>(2/2)

Holding his granddaughter’s hand, he approaches your table.

“Well…” He’s smiling. His eyes still have that elusive, predatory glint to them, but it seems he can’t help but smile a little. “I suppose you delivered.”

You nod.

“Our deal holds, then?”

He rolls his shoulders, seeming to consider it for a moment. You feel the internal clockwork begin to whir and tick inside of Laura, fists balling…

“Yes. Yes it does.” He grins, doing that thing old people do where their tongue hangs slightly over their lip. “You’re not bad, for a mutie.”

Alicia tugs his hand, looking up at him chastising. He seems to just brush it off as a young person thing.

“In fact, I could see myself employing a smart young man like yourself…" He glances down at Alicia, who nods. "...and, as it happens, my granddaughter just suggested that she may need a new bodyguard.”

Wait, what?

“Excuse me?”

You’re going to have to hear that again.

Silverman taps his cane against one side of his shoe, either out of impatience or for emphases – something, some kind of weird impulse from somewhere you can’t place, tells you it’s a mixture of both.

“I am saying that I would like to employ you.” He says, his voice a quiet rumble. “My granddaughter’s previous bodyguards have obviously not been sufficient. According to her, you might be. I place a great deal of trust in my granddaughter.”

Wow, well, that would probably pay more money than anything you’ve ever done. He’d probably set you up with an apartment. Hell, he might require that you live in, like, the Manfredi manor or whatever. Big rich person house! Constant Italian food! Money!

Unfortunately, you can’t really accept any of it.

“I’m, uh, I’m flattered, but I have to decline.”

You hear the sound of fancy shoes and real clothes and warm sheets vanishing into the storm of your own terrible lifestyle. It sounds like a thousand tombstones crashing like meteors into your dumb head. Sighing slightly, you pull yourself out of your seat. Laura follows quickly in your wake, her bright green eyes watching Silvio’s men with no small amount of suspicion.

“My life is… extremely complicated at the moment.” Not to mention, signing up would Silvio would mean abandoning the Scar. Probably your friends, too. “Frankly, I don’t think I’d be reliable.”

A thought crosses your mind.

“…However, I can be contacted for case-by-case work at the Blonde Phantom Detective Agency.”

Alicia looks a little disappointed. Silvio, not so much – mostly, you get the impression that doesn’t want to have to read through a whole bunch of resumes.

“Understandable.” He says. “Still, you have my thanks.”

You shake hands and turn to leave. As you approach the door, Silvio speaks up one last time:

“Oh, by the way.” You glance back, and see his eyes gleaming in the dark, like those of a feral thing. “Who was it? Who took my granddaughter from me?”

"Before I answer, let me first say that a gang war is right near the top of my list of 'Things I Don't Want.' However, knowing you're probably not going to listen to that, I'd like a short one instead. The Russians pressed hard on a Triad kidnapper to use as a front. From what the Kidnapper says, Mr. Negative is completely unaware of his involvement. A couple of phone calls and you might be able to get the Triads to help you against the Russians, if only to save face."

It's going to be a gang war. Silvermane won't take this lying down. If we make it a two-on-one war, then it'll hopefully be over faster. Plus, there's a chance Silvermane will find out anyways, and then it'll be a three way war, which will just make things worse. Better to say it now. I feel bad for Uncle Ed, but better him than the hundreds of innocent folks that might get caught in the crossfire.

I'd like to point out our primary objective is to stop mutants from being ground up into soylent green. Not to stop all the gangs ever. Thats moon knights problem. We just want to put a bunch of gangs that have dubiously acceptable morals in power instead of evil gangs in power.
>>
>>38750001
Except we don't want it to end faster.
The more blood the gangs spill on each other, the less fit they will be in meddling with mutant affairs and the more they will require our services, should we ever wish to offer them.

>[X] The Russians. Fuck Russians.

Well, do you care what happens to some guys that tried to stab you and shoot you and other stuff?

No. No you do not.

“It was the Bratva.” You say, glancing back. “They tried to make it look like it was the Triads, but it was definitely Russians that had her. I imagine Mr. Negative might be pretty mad if you can prove it to him.”

Manfredi’s grin almost glows.

“That so?” He chuckles quietly, his breath rattling. “You sure you don’t want a job? You have the right mind for it.”

You feel your insides squirm.

“No. I’m done with that sort of thing.”

You leave.

The night outside is cold and hard, stormclouds bunching like dark clots across the sky. You begin to make your way back toward the Scar.

Laura is quiet. Her shoulders move to a soft, relaxed rhythm – the tension of before is gone. If you’d accepted Manfredi’s offer, you could have given her a place to stay. Maybe even a place that was safe from Kimura and her fucked up friends. You could have been sharing an apartment with her before the end of the week.

“Hey…” You speak up, breaking the silence. Laura glances your way. “What would you have thought, if I’d said yes to him?”

She stares at you for a short while, as if trying to pull away your face and peer into your inner workings.

“It would have been unlike you.” She says, eventually.

That makes you smile, for some reason.

The sky is still dark when you get back to the station, but everything is beginning to smell of early morning. Everyone’s asleep in their tents, though you note that one outline – judging from the empty tent in question, Noriko’s – is missing. There are no signs of struggle, though, so you let it go and assume the best.

You crawl into your tent and let your back hit the ground. You don’t even bother to climb inside your sleeping bag – the warmth of the fabric seems to flow around you, drawing you in, your eyes suddenly growing heavy. You tense up slightly when Laura curls up beside you, resting her head on your chest.

Everything is quiet for a little while. Then,

“It’s getting harder, isn’t it?” Laura’s voice is barely above a whisper. “Your problem.”

You think about it. About the rush of violence and the lure of warm, sopping, delicious flesh. About the tantalizing heat of raw meat, and the desire to rip and tear and pull things apart. Some of it is just anger, you think – you try not to show it, but you have a lot of anger. At yourself, and at how unfair things are. That anger has been the coal upon which you’ve burned for a long, long time.

But part of it is something totally alien.

You nod.

“Yeah. Does that scare you?”

The hairs on your chest rise, your breath stuttering a little as she slides her hand along you.

“Yes.” She says, quietly. “I do not want you to become something else.”

‘Something else.’ You wonder what that something is. Something like the Hulk? All rage and repressed fear and rippling, furious strength? Or something like Joseph? Something that burns with a cosmic fire?

“That won’t happen.” You promise.

Maybe not the best thing to do? All sorts of things happen all the time, after all, you can’t really know for sure that you’ll – god damn your brain is terrible and has to stop.

Quieting your internal babble, you shift your weight slightly, turning toward Laura. No matter how many times you do it, you can’t get enough of the surprised flutter that passes through her when your lips meet hers. Her body tenses, back arching, breath stuttering in her lungs. For a moment she seems not to know how to respond, before she presses back, her lips tugging clumsily at yours. When your tongue pushes into her mouth, she freezes, breath heaving, and just shudders quietly while you explore her, her scent clotting the air, filling you with need.

You pull away, a string of drool trailing between your lips, and her breath quickens, her chest rising and falling to a frantic rhythm.

Her fingers clutch nervously at your shoulders as you move on top of her. You nibble at her ear, eliciting a muted cry of pleasure, your lips trailing down her neck, each tiny kiss putting a stumble in her breath. Grinning mischievously, you lift her sweater over her head, leaving it halfway along her arms, keeping them raised over head. Her eyes are torrential interplay of want and nervousness and discovery and desire.
>>
>>38751769
unfff, Laura a cutie
>>
>(2/3)

You kiss her again, heaving against her, pushing her into the fabric beneath the two of you. She twists and writhes like a butterfly pinned to a board, the blood rushing in her veins, heart snapping, scent coiling around you, drawing you in. Without warning, she brings her arms over your head, the softness of her sweater pressing against the back of your head, preventing you from withdrawing. You don’t complain. You kiss her as though trying to fall into her, as though devouring her.

You run your hands across her hips, your fingers clutching desperately at her, and she gasps into you, her form bucking against yours.

For how long it continues, you’re not sure. You swirl into one another, your lungs sharing one another-breath, fingers sharing one another’s flesh, until time and space and you and her burn away into one single instant in an endless void. You don’t remember when it ended, just that the two of your thrashed and coiled and kissed your way to exhaustion, and then to sleep…

The first thing you’re aware of when you awaken is that she’s on top of you. Her head lolls against your shoulder, hair running in lanes of raven black across your face. You can feel her breasts heavy against you with each long, heavy breath she takes.

You force your eyes open.

Light from outside dances along the fabric of your tent. You smell food cooking – someone is rustling up some bacon. Probably Kevin. People are talking – Noriko, Kevin, Lucas. They’re laughing.

It dawns upon you, moving like the play of light along your blankets, that there’s an unfamiliar feeling in your chest.

You feel pretty good about things in general.

Also that we're on pretty good terms due to the rescue of a certain individual and can negotiate on their behalf if they wish (but don't expect miracles)

Man. You have a lot of energy for someone who spent half the night sucking face.

Careful not to wake up Laura, you glance at your watch.

>10:25 AM

You should probably be getting up. Seems like a waste to let this energy just stew away here in your tent, even if you’d about 90% prefer to just lie there and indulge in the feeling of Laura snoozing against you. You slither your way out from under her, managing to do so without disturbing her sleep, and crawl your way out of your tent.

“Hey dude.”

Kevin waves at you over a bubbling stove. He’s sitting with Lucas and Noriko, both of whom look pretty tired.

“Hey.” You pad over to them. “You guys look wiped.”

Noriko’s brow twitches. She stares up at you, a big, sardonic grin contorting across her face.

“Yeah, I hung out with the X-people for a while. Then, when I came back, there was this weird noise coming from somewhere in here, like an antelope trying to fight itself.” You cringe a little. Ha ha ha. Ha. “It was terrible.”

“…That so?”

She lets you off the hook eventually, and you guys share a late breakfast. You tell them about last night, and ask Noriko to carry along a notice about Silvermane and his boys being a-ok for now. Her response is to inform you that you could just come with them tonight, patrolling around the Scar.

“If you’re not busy, that is. Busy in your tent. Getting”–

“Yes yes that’s enough.” Lewdness is not to be tolerated in this house.

But you guess you could tag along. You wanted to explore your powers a bit, maybe train with Laura, but you can multitask.

>>
>[X] Train with Laura.
>[X] Contact Peter about the sample.

While you wait for Laura to rise from her slumber, you try to call Peter, and end up hearing only the chime of an automated message on the other end of the line. He’s probably in class or something. You drop him a text instead:

>hey
>did you take that stuff to you friend?
>has he taken a look at it?

Might seem a little pushy, but you want to know what that stuff is.

You chat for a while about stuff you guys used to do after school, and you find your mind swooning back to that old piano set up in the park amphitheater. You wouldn’t mind going back there sometime. Maybe with the rest of the group – it’d probably do them some good to get out of the Scar for a while. You don’t dislike the place, but… you’re not sure it’s a good idea to get used to its particular brand of weirdness. You feel like the more you belong in the Scar, the less you belong in the world outside.

Eventually, Laura crawls her way out of your tent – you have to stop Noriko from saying some very lewd things – and you ask her if she wants to go work on some of the stuff you practiced yesterday.

She takes a moment to rub the sleep out of her eyes (you don’t think you’ve ever seen her do that before), before the two of you head out.

You spend the next two hours kicking air, kicking bits of wood, watching Laura kick bits of wood, and occasionally getting kicked in the stomach.

Honestly totally worth it.

Laura seemed a little disappointed at first – she said she was hoping to see if your muscle memory could handle ‘complex locks’ (whatever that means), but she’d have to test those out on someone if she wanted to show them to you. Instead, you practiced various subtle movements, things like how your feet should move and how to kick without wasting any force.

By the end, you’re pretty sure Laura’s enjoying herself, and you’re not having a bad time yourself. You can feel your body moving more fluidly and precisely, feel the presence of Laura’s movements permeating your mind, quickening your step and emerging almost naturally when you right context appears.

You spend the last half hour evading (and, occasionally, not evading) various kicks, jabs, and flurries Laura aims at you, putting what you’ve learned into practice. You manage to stay ahead of her blows for most of it, your natural agility working well with the moves she’s drummed into your skull over the last two hours.

>JJ has learned BASIC TAE KWON DO
>JJ has learned BASIC JEET KUNE DO

By the end, you’re a sweaty lump, pretty much. But not in a bad way.

And you still have the whole day ahead of you.
