You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful (and kind of rude) angel. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

After being kidnapped by the priestess, who it turns out was a doppelganger in disguise, you learned that she was hired by Andras to bring you in alive, most likely so that the enraged black knight could take revenge on you for taking his arm. However, you were able to escape and defeat your kidnapper, and made it back to the Watchtower safely. Now, time to have a little chat with the Knight-Captain about the security in this place...

The cooks bring a plate of food for you, which you gobble down almost instantly. You haven't really eaten since you were kidnapped, so needless to say, you're starving. Roland returns from the Knight-Captain's room, and takes a seat next to you.

"The Knight-Captain will be here momentarily." He informs you, as you continue to gobble down Gunther's delicious cooking. "Now, can you tell me just what on earth happened? You said it was a demon that kidnapped you, but was it the imp, or are you saying there was another demon hiding under our noses?"

>"That's exactly what I'm saying Roland, which is why I'm going to have a long talk with the Knight-Captain about some upgrades to security here."
>"Not now Roland, I'll tell you everything once the captain's here, promise."
>"Yeah, there was another one. It's a long story, where are the others? I'd rather tell you all what happened at once."
>"Yup, and the second one's been here for a whole 150 years. Seriously, the security here is absolutely terrible, enough to make an old guard cry really."

You nod. "That's exactly what I'm saying Roland, which is why I'm going to have a long talk with the Knight-Captain about some upgrades to security here. The rest is a long story though, where are the others? I'd rather tell you all what happened at once."

"Well, Joan is in the library as usual and Erika is still in her room recovering, but Daniel, and Justine are still out looking for you."

"Still out? How long have they been out there?" You ask curiously.

"Since early this morning. Erika wanted to go with him, but Daniel told her to stay and recover. They should be back soon though."

You nod. "Alright, I guess I'll have to let them know once everyone gets back."

A short wait later, after you've finished devouring your food, Knight-Captain Laurentius enters the nearly-empty dining hall, and approaches the table where the two of you sit. The old elf breaths a sigh of relief when he see you.

"Thank Aureus your alive Siegfried, we were starting to worry we'd lost you. Now, perhaps you'd better tell me what happened."

>"I was kidnapped, that's what happened. The priestess, the one you had me doing meditation sessions with? Well, as it turns out she wasn't a priestess at all."
>"The imp attacked me while I was in the chapel. I defeated him easily enough, but the priestess knocked me out with a spell. She was a doppelganger."
>"Turns out the imp wasn't the only demon hiding under your nose, captain. The priestess was a spy too, and apparently she's been watching this place for over a century."

Just tell him what happened. He's kinda the boss here, and repeating the story twice is not that much of a bother.

"The Priestess was a demon, a Dopplganger to be specific, who according to her had been hiding out in the Watchtower for 150 years or so. Odds are she would have stayed hidden despite my being alone with her in the chapel, but after an offer by Andras to bring me in alive to him personally and me informing her that I can now communicate with Galadriel outside of meditation she rushed to make her move despite the imp and revealing herself. Long story short sir, shits going down in demon land and trouble is literally walking thru the front door."

"Do you mind waiting sir? I'd like to wait until the others are here before I tell you what happened. In the meantime though, you and I need to talk about upgrading the security here."

The captain nods and takes a seat at the table across from you. "I have been thinking along the same lines myself since the incident with Erika. To think that a demon could slip in without us noticing is...concerning. What would you propose?"

"Well first thing's first, we have to make sure there aren't any more of them here. The imp and the doppelganger claimed they were the only ones here, but it's better to be safe."

The old captain raises an eyebrow. "Doppelganger? There was another?"

You nod. "An imp and a doppelganger. I don't know who the imp was disguised as, but the doppelganger was posing as the priestess in the chapel."

Laurentius looks shocked. "Sister Aleria? She was a demon? By the Void, I never would have suspected..."

"And that's exactly why we need to tighten security here. If you can get the whole fortress gathered together, I can check them one at a time with Galadriel, but then the question is how do we know nobody's being impersonated again later on?"

The Knight-Captain thinks. "There is a certain enchantment the Grey Watchtower uses for a similar purpose. It creates a symbol on the subject's armor which will only display itself if the wearer is the one the armor was attuned to at the time of casting. I could have the tower mages use this spell after verifying everyone in the tower's identity, but it will take time to check and mark everyone within the tower."

You shrug. "If that's what it takes to make sure the tower is secure, then we'll just have to take the time to do it."

The captain nods. "Yes, you may be right. If you are feeling up to it, I would get started on this the day after tomorrow. It will be an all day event, as there are many within the tower and we will have to bring them through in waves, as they still have duties to perform. I would suggest you get some rest before then, as you will need to be present for the whole thing."

You nod. "Alright, just give me some time to res-"

Your sentence is interrupted by the sound of the dining hall's doors being nearly flung off their hinges. A crowd of familiar faces enter, led by Daniel, who is supporting Erika as she walks.

"Siegfried, where in the Void have you been!" Erika shouts, hobbling as fast as Daniel will allow. Contrary to what she says, she doesn't really seem angry so much as she looks relieved. In fact, they all seem relieved to see you again, including Justine, who stands next to Joan.

>"Kidnapped. Don't worry though, I'm fine now, just a little tired from the trek back."
>"Oh you know, just got back from a hike to the Forsaken Lands with another demon. Speaking of which, yeah, there was another one."
>"Kidnapped. The imp attacked me while I was in the chapel, then the priestess turned out to be a demon too, and knocked me out with a spell. Speaking of which, sorry you didn't get a chance to pay that imp back for what happened Justine."

"Oh you know, just got back from a hike to the Forsaken Lands with another demon. Speaking of which, yeah, there was another one. The food was pretty terrible as well, and my feet still hurt."

She punches you in the arm much harder than you'd expect from someone who needs help walking. "You go missing, nearly get dragged to the Forsaken Lands by a demon, and then walk all the way back here, and you're making jokes about it? You big jackass."

You shrug. "What? I don't think I've done anything wrong. Joan, have I done anything wrong?" You say jokingly, looking to Joan for support. Surprisingly, Joan punches you in the arm as well, then quickly scribbles something down in her journal and holds it up for you to see.

[She's right, you are a jackass.]

You laugh. "Whatever, just take a seat and I'll explain everything. Especially you Erika, you're still recovering, so calm down and take a seat."

-----
When you finish telling them all what happened, you see them grow concerned.

"Then Malaphas has already taken note of you, and Andras is still after you." Daniel says with a concerned tone. "Then in that case, it is good you came here. Kidnapped or not, I imagine it would have been much worse had you stayed in Morsland."

"I agree." The captain adds. "I will be sure to tighten security here, and I will have everyone keep an eye out for this familiar should it return. You have done well to survive, Siegfried. You make a fine champion, temporary or no."

>"It was thanks to Galadriel, really. If she hadn't been there, I'd probably be face to face with Andras right now."
>"I guess. By the way, sorry I didn't bring you the imp like I said I would Justine. It was dead by the time I woke up."

"Maybe not." Says Laurentius. "But I still have hopes that Galadriel will change her mind and make you a true champion some day, so this is a step in the right direction.."

You sigh. Even now, it seems the captain is determined to drag you further into all this. But, at least the most you'll be doing is patrolling, and even then not for a while, so you let it slide.

The one-armed man kneels before the figure on the black throne once more. The seated king gazes down on him, red eyes glowing behind his helm.

"What do you have to report?"

"My lord, we have lost contact with our spies in the White Watchtower. It is now safe to assume that they are either dead or missing. Not only that, but the familiar claims that security has been tightened in the tower. It is unlikely we will be able to field a new spy there any time soon."

The king's grip tightens, causing small cracks to form in the black stone arm of his throne. "And what of the rising champion? What news do you have of him?"

Andra's eyes narrow at the mention of the champion. "Not much, my lord. From our last reports, it seems he is growing stronger. However, we have no reason to believe that he has tapped any more of Galadriel's potential."

The king's grip loosens. "Is that so? Then tell me, Andras, how do you propose we deal with him now?"

Andras looks up at the throned figured in surprise. "My lord?"

"Do not make me repeat myself Andras. If the spies have been compromised, then we will have to take more direct action. However, I do not want to attack the tower directly, not now at least, so I will leave our next course of action to you."

Behind his helm, Andras smiles grimly. "Thank you sir, I will not disappoint."

"See that you don't, Andras. Even if I made you one of us, you know very well that I do not tolerate failure."

Andras nods, and excuses himself from the throne room. When he does, he finds the nearest window and whistles. When he does, a large black raven swoops down from the sky and lands on his shoulder.

"Circle around the tower. Observe them from afar, and inform me if you learn anything of use."

"It shall be done." The raven replies in a voice as quiet as a whisper. It's eyes glow red as it speaks, before it flies off, heading back west.

------
Weeks pass back at the tower, and much has changed. Everyone in the tower is tested by Galadriel, then their armor is enchanted when the check out. It seems the doppelganger told you the truth, because absolutely no one there starts burning when you touch them with Galadriel.

In addition, Erika finally finishes recovering from the incident at the training yard. Everything goes back to normal, though now Justine and Erika don't seem to bicker as much.

"We had a little chat the day you went missing." Erika told you when you asked. "I still don't really like her, but I can at least tolerate her now."

Your training continues like normal, though now you no longer meditate in the evenings. You stop to meditate every now and then when you have time, but for the most part if you have questions for Galadriel, you're able to ask her whenever you want. Horseback training also stops, as it turns out the training was only required for one week, so that recruits could ride on patrol. This gives you plenty more free time then you originally had. However, it seems that there are other training courses available for recruits that wish to specialize in something. Taking one of these courses is not mandatory, but strongly recommended, and include many useful classes ranging from mounted combat training to demonology.

You decide to sign up for an archery training course. As the weeks pass by, you learn everything from how far to draw the bow to how to properly aim a crossbow or bow, and practiced with most conventional types of ranged weaponry, from crossbows and bows to javelins and slings.

>Congratulations! You have improved your skill with ranged weapons.

In addition, you learn a lot more about spellcraft from Daniel. Now that you've gotten the hang of Illumintation and Flash, Daniel decides you're ready to learn about healing spells.

"The first thing you need to understand, Siegfried, is that healing spells are not a free pass to get yourself injured." He starts. "It can save your life in a pinch, but don't get reckless thinking you can heal the damage later. Another thing to know, is that healing becomes more effective the more recent the wounds are. A fresh wound will heal more easily than an old wound, and an injury that occurred years ago is very difficult if not impossible to heal. The more severe the wound, the more tiring it is to heal. A small cut will not take much energy, but regrowing a fatal wound, like what you suffered in your battle with Andras, is very tiring to heal. For that reason, many healers will simply patch up the wound enough for the subject to stabilize, then treat them a little over time. Now, let me show you the incantation..."

>New Spell unlocked!
>Heal: Heals the subject's wounds. The more you heal, the more tiring this spell is.

Finally, you begin meditating more often with Galadriel, though this time you do it in the safety of your own room. You close your eyes and focus on your mental image of the sword, from it's golden sheen to the engravings on it's sheathe.
----
You feel the familiar rush of wind and when you open your eyes, you are sitting above the clouds once again. Galadriel stands atop her mountain peak as usual, observing you.

"Is there something you wish of me?" She asks. "What brings you here, when we can now freely communicate?"

"Just thought I'd stop by and ask a few questions face-to-face, if that's alright."

Galadriel seems somewhat confused, but shrugs. "I do not mind. What questions do you have for me?"

You have a few, actually, but you start with one you'd been wondering for a while now.

"You mentioned that there were other powers you might teach me if I could prove myself. I don't know if I've done that yet, but could you tell me anything about these powers?"

"For those champions that I believe are ready, I lend them some of my strength in the form of these powers. You have seen the most basic of these, the ability to change weapons in the middle of combat, and you have put it to good use in the past. However, I am capable of much more than that."

You catch a sense of pride coming from Galadriel as she says this. It seems she's very confident in her abilities.

"Alright, and what other sort of powers can you give?"

"I am capable of quite a few things, such as bestowing great strength to my wielder for a short time, as well as the ability to fly at great speeds, and even create multiple copies of my wielder to confound foes."

"Huh, those sound pretty useful. What about some of the greater powers you have? What can they do?"

She thinks for a moment. "Forgive me, but I wish to keep those a secret for now."

"Why? Do you not trust me?"

She takes a moment to consider her words before answering. "It is not that I don't trust you, it is just a precaution. More than one champion in the past has tried to force access to my powers before they were ready, and the results were rarely pleasant. For that reason, I wish to keep them a secret, so that you are not tempted to try and force them."
>>
>>38759208
"Wait, force? That's possible?"

"As I've said, I can only control the link between us so much. No matter how much control I have over it, the link still goes both ways, so it is possible, though it would be difficult, and likely very painful for you." Her voice grows serious when she says this. "Siegfried, I am telling you this as a warning. No matter the situation, do not try to force control of my powers before you are ready. Your body may not be able to take it, and it will likely kill you."

Yikes. Honestly, your not even sure how the Void you'd do that, so you let it go.

"Okay, I won't." You reassure her.

"Good." She says, voice relaxing a bit. "Now, do you have any other questions for me?"

"Actually, yeah. You seem to know a lot about fighting demons, do you have any tips or advice you could give me in case I need to fight one again?"

Galadriel thinks for a moment. "I am afraid I can only offer so much advice. In my experience, it is easier to learn by experience than by tutoring. However, I may be able to help there."

"What, with getting experience? You're not asking I walk out to the Forsaken Land and practice, are you?"

She shakes her head. "Nothing of the sort. However, I have encountered and slain many demons in my lifetime, and right now our minds are linked through meditation. If you wish, I may be able to let you practice here, against one of the demons from my memory. It would be a good way to gain experience without the risk associated with true combat."

So basically, she's offering to let you practice her against a memory she has from her own experience. You're not exactly sure how real said memory would be, but it could be a good way to practice.

"Very well." Galadriel says. "Before we start, I must ask. How difficult do you want this battle to be? You may learn more from fighting a more powerful foe, but it will be a difficult battle."

How difficult? Well, you've done pretty good so far, but then again you're not sure what Galadriel's defines as a "difficult opponent".

You have to remember, Galadriel implied that wielder only died because he was frozen in fear and couldn't run to avoid the attack or spell or whatever.

No you do not, you get better by the application of recognizing mistakes and improving upon them so you don't make them again, you first need to be able to achieve what you are doing to improve from it, which you can't do if you go for the hardest difficulty like a retard.

"Uh...try something in the middle? Not too easy, but not something that's too much for me to handle?"

Galadriel nods. "Very well."

Suddenly, the scenery changes. No longer are you standing above the clouds, instead you are standing in an empty field. The sun shines overhead, making the place seem quite peaceful.

Well, for a moment at least.

Suddenly, you hear a loud CRASH come from behind you, and a giant red hand pokes out from underground. Smoke rises from the hole, enough to block out the sun, making the light go dim. The creature pulls itself out the rest of the way, bellowing in rage as it does. It has a set of red leathery wings on it's back, and wears spiked armor which is decorated with several skulls. The top of it's head bursts into flames as it roars, and in it's hand is a giant flaming scythe. It stands roughly 15 feet tall, and glares at you with it's blood red eyes.

You have a feeling you'll have to have a chat with Galadriel about what defines mid-range after this, but for now she's no where to be seen, and the flaming demon is already charging straight at you.

You stand there and wait for the right timing to dodge. To say it's nerve wracking watching this thing charge at you would be an understatement, but you hold fast. Right as it brings it's flaming scythe up to swing, you roll forward, right underneath it and past it's swing. You recover quickly, and slash at the demon's leg as you run past it. It's roars in outrage at your attack, and swings it's tail at you, just barely missing.

You did some damage, but it'll take a lot more than that to fell this thing.

You run off, putting some distance between you and the demon. Once you get a good distance away, you draw the bowstring and wait for a good shot.

That shot comes when the demon starts to pick itself up. It looks up and glares at you when it starts to get it's feet underneath it again, and you fire.

The arrow flies true and hit the demon square in it's left eye. The demon roars so loud it actually shakes the ground. It picks itself up and runs towards you in a blind rage, each step making the earth quake just a little.

You wait for the right timing to shift Galadriel. The demon gets closer...closer...you can almost see the rage in it's eye now, and...NOW!

You shift Galadriel into a pike and quickly brace yourself. The demon manages to impale itself on your pike, pushing you a good 10 feet back in the process. The pike goes deep, aided by the demon's momentum, and it grabs the pike with it's bare hands (burning them in the process) and pulls it out, tossing it and you aside. You tumble a bit, but you're not hurt.

As you keep fighting this thing, you start to realize something. This whole time, the demon has done nothing but attack. It hasn't bothered to block or fight in a defensive manner even once, instead trying to cleave you in two with wide swings of it's scythe or kicking you with it powerful legs. Galadriel mentioned that demons all have some sort of vice that they draw power from, so if you had to guess you'd guess this guy's vice is Wrath or something along those lines. Maybe you could use that to your advantage?

Regardless, after that last attack, the demon's not holding up too well. You imagine another good hit or two will finish it off.

However, something's up. The air around you feels hotter for some reason, and the demon is making a low growling sound. Is it charging something up?

You cast Flash, hoping to blind the demon and get out of range. The spell goes off, but it's not as bright as some other times you've cast it. The demon is dazed, but not for long. You managed to at least buy yourself some time, so you make a break for it while it's dazed.

As soon as the demon recollects itself, it chases after you, aided by it's large wings. The air gets even hotter, and it's growl is getting louder. This is gonna be close...

The fight has made you tired, but lucky for you the demon is in even worse shape than you, and falls behind. It goes from a low growl to a loud roar, and suddenly there's a loud explosion behind you, and when you stop to look back, you see that where the demon once stood, the grass is now ablaze and you see no trace of the demon left. It looks like it blew itself up.

"Well done." You hear from within your mind. You turn around to see if Galadriel is there and notice that you're no longer sitting in the field where you fought the demon, but back on top of the clouds, in front of Galadriel's mountain peak. Your find that your wounds have also disappeared, though you still feel exhausted after that fight.

"You did well Siegfried, even better than expected. You should be proud."

"Sweet Aureus in the Void, what WAS that thing? You ask, trying to catch your breath.

"That was an Astaroth, a type of demon that serves Alastor, the lord of Wrath."

Wrath. Looks like you guessed it right back there. You take a moment to catch your breath, before saying the next thing that comes to mind.

"You call that mid-range? I'd hate to see what you think is a difficult fight!"

"It is." Galadriel says flatly. "Astaroth are one of Alastor's favored shocktroopers. During the Crusades, we saw many of them charging our lines. They are thankfully few in number, but very strong."

You know, it's been a while since you remembered just how glad you are to only be a temporary champion, but the thought of fifty or so demons like that charging a force of crusaders makes you remember just how glad you are that this is only a temporary thing.

"Did that thing just blow itself up?" You ask. "Doesn't it have a sense of self-preservation at all?"

Galadriel shakes her head. "No. Astaroth are demons born from blind fury and hate. They live only to kill, and if they find themselves close to death, they will gladly destroy themselves if doing so will destroy their enemies as well."

Damn, and those things are supposed to be shocktroopers? You mental image of fifty Astaroth demons charging a line of crusaders becomes an image of them all exploding, and you're even more glad this is just a temporary thing.
>>
>>38761101
"How did the crusaders even fight those things if they explode when they're about to die?" You ask curiously. Indeed, how in the Void could anyone keep fighting when the demons they slay start exploding in a big burst of flame.

"By killing them before they can explode." She replies. "If you can kill an Astaroth before it finishes charging up, it will not explode."

Easier said than done, but you suppose that would be a little easier when you have a whole army of men helping you.

"In any case," Galadriel continues. "You did very well Siegfried, I am impressed. You should get some rest now, even if there is no risk of you dying in here, it is still tiring to fight here."

Before you go, you did have a few more questions for Galadriel.

"Is there a demon Lord for each deadly sin? Is there any way I can exploit their specific sin to my own advantage in a fight?"

She shakes her head. "No, there aren't that many. Long ago, they once numbered in the hundreds, each representing a different negative concept, no necessarily limited to the traditional seven sins. Right now only four remain, the lords of Wrath, Fear, Greed, and Pride. However, you can learn a lot about a demon by their vice, and demon lords are no exception. They can offer insight into how a demon thinks, how it acts, and what it's personality is like. for example, did you notice that the Astaroth you fought was focused solely on crushing you, and not on it's own safety? The same can be expected of almost all demons that are empowered by Wrath, though there are exceptions. In either case though, if you should ever find yourself face to face with one, you should worry less on how to fight them, and more on how to escape. As you are right now, you would not last a second against them."

Not like you intended to fight them anyways, but if you're going to be dragged into this demon fighting business, you'd like to be informed.
>>
>>38761406
"One other question. When we were testing everyone in the tower, did anyone fit the bill for champion? Anyone at all?"

Galadriel shakes her head. "No."

"Really? No one? In this whole entire tower, full of people that would love a chance to fight for the Forsaken Lands, not even ONE stands out to you?"

She shakes her head again. "Willingness does not guarantee ability. There are many good people here, people that long ago I may possibly have chosen as my champion after all. But now I know better. There are no perfect champions here, and so I must ask that you watch over my blade a little longer."

>"There you go again. Like I told you in Morsland, there is no "perfect" champion out there. Sooner or later, you're gonna have to either settle, or give up on the Crusades."
>"How do you think I feel having to watch over this thing after getting kidnapped and nearly dragged to certain death? Can't you just pick someone and be done with it?"
>"Haa, fine. I'll watch over the damn sword a little longer. But you seriously need to find someone to take my place already."
>"And what happens if I say 'screw it' and just leave? I never asked for this you know, and it's not fair of you to drag me into this. The people here a good folks, but I don't want any part of this crap."

You sigh. "Haa, fine. I'll watch over the damn sword a little longer. But you seriously need to find someone to take my place already. Though like I told you in Morsland, there is no 'perfect' champion out there."

Galadriel is silent for a moment. Through the mental link, you can tell that she is sad.

"And like I told you in Morsland, even if there is none I must do my best to find one. Too many people have died because of my poor decisions, I will not let another die because of it."

You can't help but feel a little bad for Galadriel. It's obvious she feels responsible for the deaths of her past champions, and to an extent maybe she is. But still, what she's doing is hopeless, and all it's doing is dragging you into the thick of things.

"Thanks you for watching over my blade, Siegfried." She finally says., "Though you are not a permanent champion, you are a good person, and I am glad to have met you."

Huh. You know, maybe it's strange to say this after being kidnapped and nearly dying because of her, but you can't really say you regret meeting her either, or any of the people here in the Watchtower really.

"Likewise." You tell her "But like I said, sooner or later you're going to have to realize there is no perfect champion, and when that happens, you're going to have to decide whether you want to keep fighting and choose someone already."

Galadriel says nothing. You're sure she knows what you're saying is true, but whether or not she chooses to accept that is another story.

You close your eyes and end the meditation session. You have training again tomorrow, it's time you got some sleep.

Question for the qm.
If you don't mind answering, what would have happened if we'd let the doppelganger go?
>>
>>38761977
Well that depends. If you'd let her go, she'd probably have shown up in a later thread, and depending on circumstances either help or hinder you guys.

If you mean bringing her back to the tower and trying to make her an ally, well honestly I'd have made you guys work for it. First, there'd be finding a way to convince the people in the tower not to kill her then and there, and then you guys would have had to find a way to make her loyal and stay loyal. The idea behind her was to show that demons, while always evil, aren't necessarily always assholes as well. They CAN be bargained with, but only so long as it's beneficial to them, so then the question would be how do you make her stay loyal?

I'm not the sort who'll say No very often unless it's legitimately stupid or an obvious troll attempt, but I will make you guys work for it if it's something that wouldn't be easy to accomplish. Making her into a party member was a possibility, but not necessarily an easy one, and there would have definitely been the risk of her turning on you.

That's definitely something you can learn, though Daniel would tell you enchantment isn't really his specialty. You'd have to find someone else.
>>38762505
>How would you have gone about securing her loyalty were she still alive?
Not too sure really. The fact she'd be screwed if she went back to Malaphas empty handed helps, but doesn't really guarantee she wouldn't turn the moment an opportunity to do so without getting turned to red paste by Malaphas presents itself. If she thought she was on the winning side, maybe, but good luck convincing any demon of that.
>And what would Galadriel's resction have been to sparing her?
Just sparring her? She'd question the wisdom of your actions, but commend your sense of mercy, though she'd think it's still naive, even in her eyes. But trying to make her into a party member? Let's just say she'd be veeeerrrry skeptical of the wisdom in that.
