So much work to do.

Leaving Mikahil's room as the light from the dawning sun begins to fill the east-facing windows of the castle, you lean against a wall and spend a moment thinking about the recent events.

Everyone is giving their best in preparation for the arrival of the Silver Prince's fleet. As insane as the idea sounded at first, you now have good reason to hope for the manse of Pearl to actually be finished in time.

Operative word "hope". If you can't complete at least the fortifications in time... you don't really have a Plan B.

So, you mentally go over all the bits of your Plan A that are coming along.

Ocean Father is on your side. It took some oaths, but you don't regret them. The help he can give you is immense.

The spies in Tianna are taken care of. Hopefully in Pearl as well, you sent Five Tails there yesterday.

Irene is assembling the machines and Amata and Zaan summoning the demons that will help with the construction effort, and Valeriana should have finished the blueprints.

Radiant Starfall, your newly-acquired Night Caste, said she knows someone who can efficiently direct demons. Amata doesn't like how all this is connected to some seedy old story about a demonic cult, but she agreed to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Samiel is handling defenses here. Talon should be on his way to Pearl to help there, with his tribesmen. Same with Pyre Spark and the Cult.

And the Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine... she should be arriving near Pearl soon as well, you realize.

Samiel said he'd take care of defenses in Tianna. He knows the defensive layout of the fortifications better than anyone. And Zareen is here to help him.

Amata said she'd send some demons to dig up more of its buried chambers. They might reveal some useful artifacts. But those demons will be, of course, bound to those rooms and unable to leave, to protect the secret, so either you, Amata or Irene will have to go there personally to inspect their work.

And Dancing Smoke... well.

Amata said she can try and repair the Titan's power core and that could improve Dancing Smoke's memories, or fix them altogether.
She also pointed out how risky that is. If her personality changes, she could become resentful. Or hostile. If she realizes that she's actually the goddess of the Titan buried under Tianna.

Plus, there's no guarantee she'd keep that a secret. And if everyone knew you were sitting on such a treasure trove of first age military technology... You shudder thinking of the implications.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, and have a powerful Manse under construction.
But Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress built in an ancient, forgotten age, and although this is kept secret, two Deathlords are seeking to obtain it.
The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine, ghost of your past incarnation, seeked it as a weapon to cut her ties to the Neverborn. But you have persuaded her to try and seek redemption in the eyes of the Sun in other ways, and count her as an unlikely ally.
But now the Silver Prince is coming, to punish her and claim the Titan for himself in the name of Oblivion. And this looks like a battle you won't be able to talk your way out of...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

It's better to go and see Dancing Smoke first, perhaps.

You wonder how she must feel... why she lost her memory like this. Was it sealed on purpose by the same person who hid the Titan? Or did she just lose it from the damage?

Maybe it was... something of a defensive reaction? Does the Titan count as her body? If it was so, then she'd probably want to forget about that... considering the sorry state in which it is compared to the awesome war machine it used to be.

You stare out of a window at the gently smoking volcano in the distance, and nod to yourself.

Without Tia to rely on, you'll have to walk or ride a horse to there. It could take something like six hours.

Tia is out "hunting" right now... that girl sure is a handful. You're not sure how long she'll take, but you don't think it's going to be six hours. Talon is also away, as is Five Tails. Leaving you with Zaan, who is however busy with sorcery.

Lunars sure are convenient for fast travel, you think with a giggle.

>Wait for Tia to be back. Do something else while you wait. (what?)
>Ask Zaan if he can take a break and give you a ride.
>Head there normally, by foot or by horse. Most of your work in Tianna is done anyway, everyone else knows what to do.
>Get back to Speaker of the Dead and ask her to fly you there with the Ornithopter. You'll have to either explain the situation to her, or make up some excuse and make sure she doesn't overhear you and Dancing Smoke.
>Reach the volcano via the underground passages. It will take probably something around four hours anyway, and you'll have to ask Amata about it.
>>

No sailor would pretend to be a woman in the West, that shit could lead to accidents with the Storm Mothers, it's the whole reason for Tya existing, so women can be sailors without fear of the,.
>>
>>38763987
>...I think I remember Maka noticing one of the pirates was disguising his/her gender.
At least one of the pirates owns women's underwear, which were given to Maka one of the times her everything exploded. We never investigated further, because regardless of whether it's a woman crossdressing as a man or a man dressing as a woman for the benefit of the crew while they're at sea, it's their own business. The West has a proud tradition of crossdressing and sodomy.

Is Mikahil not around? He has riding charms and a super-horse if we really want to get up there fast. Losing almost 25% of a day getting to the volcano, and then another 25% getting back, isn't acceptable with the time crunch we're on. We don't have enough work to do on the way to make that productive.

(Right, Mikahil is also an option, but he's also busy with stuff in Tianna, balancing accounts and preparing his new coinage plans.)

You don't really like interrupting people like this, especially not since you've already disturbed Zaan quite a bit, but...

You return to the sorcery room, and knock, waiting for someone inside to open for you. You hear strange noises coming from within, like a chatter of incomprehensible voices and the crackling noise of green wood burning.

After a couple of minutes, Zaan opens the door. The room is... empty, it seems, but filled with a reddish-black mass of smoke tendrils, that seem almost liquid, oily. The smoke seems to linger inside the room, not trailing behind Zaan's movements or flowing out of the room now that the door is open, the way it normally would.

"...Yes?" Zaan seems quite tired, yet it hasn't been long since you saw him enter the room. His castemark, a hollow circle of blue-white light, is brightly glowing on his forehead.

You peek inside the room. "...Amata?"

"Once she summoned a few more demons, she went to take a break. She said her Essence was exhausted and she had to breathe."

Your mind clicks. It might be true, or she might have just said that to Zaan and then went to the Titan's secret passage to direct the demons digging underground.

"I, uh, I needed a passage up to Dancing Smoke's volcano. Are you busy?"

(cont.)
>>
>>38764212
But I did anon, please read the entire post if you are confused.
>>
"I'm not finished yet, and I want to conclude the summoning without any gaps in between, actually." He groans, and you see wisps of smoke exiting from his mouth. "You rely a bit too much on Tia for moving around, you know. I get that that girl spends most of her time glued to you, but you should consider investing on some fast-travel charms of your own. You Solars have those, right?"

"I think so?" You reply. "I've never been a particularly fast runner."

"I can imagine." He turns for a moment, staring at the hazy mess that is the sorcery room right now. "Give me a hour to finish here. If Tia isn't back by then, I'll carry you around."

"Alright." You nod. You had something on your mind anyway... since you have an hour, you'll go and visit Samiel for a bit.

Him and Dancing Smoke have... a thing going on, after all. He should probably know at least a bit.

...And, if Dancing Smoke goes berserk, he might be the only one who can stop her.

You find Samiel in a corner of the castle's barracks, sitting on the ground in a circle with a few other soldiers and officers. You see jugs of water, sandwiches, cuts of meat and bowls of soup. In the background, directed by another officer, a team of soldiers does a routine inspection of their equipment. Further back, more training. Sparring, drilling, formations, target practice.

You have to give it to Samiel: he takes his job incredibly seriously. You can see that these soldiers are nearly Tiger Warrior-level. Not quite that good, but still.

"Sammy." You greet him.

"Maka." He stands up, gulping down the last of his sandwich. The other soldiers and officers stand up as well and salute you.

We should really buy the Permanent fast-running Night charm. I've wanted it for a long time, but there's never been any consensus on it. It would really round out our mobility suite.

We already have Graceful Crane Stance and Monkey Leap Technique. What do you guys say to rounding it out with fast movement at our next opportunity? It really would solve a lot of issues and open up a lot of mobility options in battle.

I'm all for it if there is nothing really pressing to get before it. Its a great utility, which we are sorely lacking, though we're also heavy hitting combat charms too, which of course we will need because Karas is fucking useless and never does what we tell him to and is never where we need him.

Hey, you know how Maka knows Amata, right? Her entire family took a vacation to Tianna when she was a little girl. That's a vacation to somewhere more than 3,000 miles away in a setting where sails are almost unknown and the peak of most sailing technology are triremes powered by slaves/sailors. That's a vacation that involves crossing a desert the size of Asia before you even hit the ocean.

And it made a big enough impression that Maka decided this was the safest place to be after she was usurped, and took a 'several Marco Polos' length journey to get here.

I'm betting Maka's mother and Amata knew each other pretty fucking well long before Maka was even born, to make a trip like that.

Here's Maka's sister.
>>
"Can we talk a bit?" You ask him, eyeing the other soldiers and officers, with politely finish their food and leave as Samiel nods.

"What's going on?" He asks, once you're alone.

"Oh, I was wondering how were things going between you and Dancing Smoke."

You notice he blushes a bit. "Well... We saw each others yesterday. I told her about the situation and so on. She's going to help us at the best of her ability, of course, but unless the Prince brings his forces very close to the volcano, she can't do much."

You gently elbow him. "You know what I mean."

He rolls his eyes. "...Yes. Well. You know her she's... she's weird."

"She IS a bit kinky." You nod. "Or rather, I have the feeling that she'd want you to be a bit more kinky to her."

"...Don't talk about this in public, alright." His voice lowers as he looks around to make sure there's no one around to listen.

"I wouldn't, don't worry." You laugh. "But hey. Having a First Age dragon-goddess who is into dom-sub play for a girlfriend is something most-"

Once Samiel stops acting embarrassed, you inform him: "...I think part of Dancing Smoke's memories might be suppressed."

"...Really?" He wonders.

"Did you ever try asking her anything about the First Age?"

"Mh." He mumbles. "Actually, no."

"She doesn't remember almost anything. But she was definitely around back then, so something must have sealed her memories."

"...Any idea what?" He asks.

"Could've been anything." You shrug. "Probably what she used to be a goddess of in the First Age was damaged or destroyed, and she survived in a lessened form."

Well, it's not a lie.

Samiel hmmms. "...Is there anything we can do to fix her memory?"

Indeed, any extraction process that needs ten thousand mortals to obtain significant quantities of Sunshine and Rainbows is terribly inefficient and a complete waste of time.

You scratch your head. "We're a bit worried that with her new memories she might... change."

He lifts an eyebrow. "Change?"

"You know... she might remember unpleasant things. She might hate us, or maybe... maybe me specifically."

"You're not the person your Solar Shard was in the First Age." He points out. You've been pretty adamant on that.

"She might not realize. Or not care. Or... she might act on the spur of the moment and do something stupid. She's a volcano, remember. What if she erupted?" Or worse?" You ask him. "If we unlock her memories, she'd get a huge amount of power back, probably. She could get too powerful for us to control."

"...Yes, but she's also be a nasty surprise for the Silver Prince." He nods. "I think... we should do it. I'll stay with her when you reactivate her memories. Try and make it smooth and calm."

"Alright."

"...How do you plan on doing that?" He wonders.

You shrug and make vague gestures. "It's a long, boring, technical story. Frankly I'm not even sure exactly how it'd work. Up to your mom and sis, mostly. We're just damage control.

He seems to buy it. He nods and is about to open his mouth to reply, when a sudden astonished murmur across the barracks interrupts him.

Tia strides into the training ground, drenched in seawater and blood, and covered in bite marks. She's carrying, slung over her shoulder, a giant white shark that you'd guess somewhere between 15 and 20 meters from nose to tail. You don't even WANT to know how she got that through the castle's entrance. The carcass is utterly mauled, riddled with bruises and deep bite marks - most of them, but not all of them, human- and has a large hole large enough for someone to crawl into just DRILLED through its side, evidently to reach the heart.

"Found it." She proudly proclaims.

Amidst the utter horrified panic that runs through the troops, you hear a soldier mumble something like "I'm so happy she's on our side."

>Just in time. I and Samiel need a lift.

"Oh, welcome back, Tia." You'll admit you ARE surprised as well - you weren't expecting her to bring the whole thing back. But playing it nonchalantly will probably increase morale. "Why the whole shark?"

"It seemed a waste." She drops the immense carcass with a thud so loud it shakes the building. "Do you want to give them a test ride now?" She suggests, wiggling her eyebrows and grinning wildly.

"Right now I was wondering if you could give us... a more practical kind of ride." Samiel's suppressed laughter distracts you for a moment. "As in, fly me and Samiel up to Dancing Smoke's crater."

"Are we doing a foursome?"

"No- er, maybe?" You suggest. "We'll see later, right now we mostly have to talk. About that thing. Remember? You were also there when I and Amata discussed it."

She blinks. "I wasn't paying a lot of attention, but okay. Let's go."

"Um, could you first... at least clean up all the blood on you?" Samiel suggests.

She stares at him blankly. "...Why?" She asks, clearly confused.

"...Just... wash up a little bit. We're not in such a hurry." You ask her.

After a few minutes of preparation and cleanup, Tia grabs the two of you and lifts you both so you're riding on her shoulders, then sprouts a massive pair of feathered wings and flies up from the castle's rooftop at a frankly frightening speed.

After less than one hour of flight (the first few minutes of which have just been Samiel screaming, though he calmed down after a bit, thankfully), Tia lands on the very edge of the volcanic crater and sets you two down gently.

"We're here." She informs you, like it wasn't obvious already. "What now?"

Dancing Smoke is nowhere to be seen at first. But, she's probably detected you. Unless she's sleeping? Do gods even sleep? You're not sure.

However, after a minute or so, you see her rising from the volcanic crater, in a column of smoke and fire.

What most of the time would be the dramatic appearance of a powerful manifestation of the natural world deified, however, is by now kind of a normal even to all of you.

"Oh, Maka. 'Sup."

"'Sup." You nod at her. "I wanted to talk to you about-"

"Samiel! You're here too!" The goddess flits around you and just grabs and picks up Samiel, holding him sitting in her lap while hovering midair above you.

"Say... Dancing Smoke. Why didn't you ever tell me that you forgot the First Age?" He asks her.

"What?" She keeps her cheerful demeanor. "It's just an old story, and it's not important now. Besides, what would I say? That I forgot a lot of stuff, but I don't remember what?" She laughs. "I don't care much about it. Not now that I have you. Oh! Will you take a bath in the lava pool with me?"

You hate butting in like this, but... "We might be able to fix you." You say.

"Fix me?" She looks down on you. "Are you saying that I'm... damaged?"

>Yes. You might not realize this, but you are.

"What if I told you I and Amata can give it back to you?" You suggest.

"How?" She finally asks.

"Why would she help me? She hates me."

"So it IS a help?" You smile.

She grumbles. "Well. I'm not ashamed to admit that, while I might not care about those memories, I wouldn't refuse the option of becoming more powerful." She points a finger down, to her volcano. "I DO remember something. I remember I was the goddess of something much grander and more impressive than a single volcano. But no one seems to remember me around here, so I have no way to know."

"To answer your question, Amata was against restoring your memories. managed to persuade her to at least hear from you first."

"A spiritual being high enough on the Celestial Hierarchy to transcend the separation between gods and elementals and manifest as a Lesser Dragon."

"That's a likely theory." You admit.

"And having a Lesser Dragon on your side would be really helpful against the Silver Prince's forces." She crosses her arms and grins. "Do it."

"Are you sure?" Samiel replies, sounding worried.

"You might think badly of me for this, but... Actually, even if you do, I don't care. I'm doing it for power." She proudly admits. "If it was just about memories, I probably wouldn't do it. Why isn't anyone making a write in to thank her for helping us, even if she had to use disguise her desire to help as being the Power-Hungry Goddess instead of the good person she is?
Add in some seduction and it'd be perfect

"...Thank you. I'm going to put my trust in you for this." You tell her. "I want you to know, we're not THAT desperate for some help. Healing your memory is more about setting things right than giving you a power boost."

"Psh." She waves dismissively at you. "I'm sure you're not going to complain."

"Just... don't go crazy or anything. Alright?" Samiel asks her.

"Only if you go crazy on me." She suggests.

Tia nods sagely. "I was promised a foursome."

"You were?" Dancing Smoke grins.

"I have a new toy I want to try." She replies, inching closer to the goddess. Samiel wisely stands aside. "Maybe I should try it on you first, thoroughly, to see if it's worth of Maka."

"They can both get awfully competitive, right?" Samiel asks you, as the two entirely-too-excited women stare each other down.

"We should remind them who's boss." You suggest to him.

After a nod of understanding, you both charge into them and shoulder-check the two of them into the crater, tumbling in a deep, deep dive down to the lava pool at the very bottom.

A good hour something later, Dancing Smoke carries you and Tia back up to the edge of the crated with the very last of her energy left.

Samiel decided to spend some time here before returning to Tianna. Besides, you informed him of your intention to head to Pearl instead. Fortunately Dancing Smoke will be available to carry him back home.

"I think he feels kind of sad after seeing what Tia can do. As a man, I mean." She suggests in a low voice.

Tia puffs her chest proudly, but you reply "Well, tell him that Tia is a Lunar. He shouldn't compare himself to her, really. She cheats."

"Neither of you seemed to mind me "cheating"." She replies, sounding almost offended.

"We didn't." You both reply in unison. before breaking in a giggle. "...You have good care of Sammy, you hear me?" You finally tell Dancing Smoke, before saying goodbye.

"Absolutely." She replies. "Let me know if you need anything else from me, by the way."

"I think Valeriana might come here to ask for your help with some more metal work." You reply.

"Oh, right." Dancing Smoke licks her lips. "I miss her a bit."

After exchanging a bit more chatter and saying goodbye, Dancing Smoke dives into her volcano, back to her lover's side.

"So, Pearl?" The cheerful, almost shining smile of a satisfied Tia is wonderful to behold.

"Yep. Tyrant should be already there."

You have Tia fly you to Pearl. The trip takes about a hour and a half.

Pearl, seen from above, doesn't look like much, but you can kind of see what is happening. The large construction yard where foundations have been dug is surrounded by stocks and piles of wood, stone, bricks, depots and storehouses, and other buildings and facilities. smelters, foundries, metal workshops, clay kilns, carpenters. Outwards from there, the houses of the construction workers, of the hunters and fishermen, and fields sown with crops.

...Defensively speaking, all this is terrible. Any army with a battering ram and the thumbs to use it could smash down the weak wooden palisade that surrounds the "city" and rampage inside. Even once you finish the Manse, that will be the only strongpoint. You'll have to evacuate everyone inside and abandon all these people's houses and workplaces.

Well, as long as you all survive, you can always rebuild, you reason. They might not like it, but... you really can't do anything else about it.

Not too far north, beyond the river, you see the multi-colored rainbow-like fog of Silk's Wyld spot. All your settlers have taken great care to keep away from it, even though a few small boats can be seen sailing up and down the river lazily.

And, further east, between the lake and the forest, he vast black shape of the Dark Omen rests against the green countryside, like a giant armor-plated cockroach on a brightly-colored carpet.

Tia flaps down near the construction site and drops you. Immediately, probably having seen you come from afar, the people of Pearl begin to mill around you.

"Divine Maka!"

"Lady Maka!"

"Lady Maka! What is happening?"

"A giant monster has landed near the lake!"

"Will it kill the fish?"

"Are you here to save us?"

"There's talk of Skullstone moving war to us! Is it real?"

"What should we do?"

"Please help us!"

"Where did Lady Valeriana go? We can't continue building the Manse without her!"

"People, please, calm down. It's all right. That monster is a, uh." Yeah. "It's a Deathlord's airship."

They don't calm down.

"I said calm down! She's on our side now!" Okay, that's not quite 100% true but you need a bit of exaggeration here. Plus that surprised them enough to leave you silence to continue. "The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine wishes to renounce her previous allegiance and ally herself with Tianna and Pearl."

"But isn't she still a Deathlord?" Someone asks.

"...Yes, she IS still a Deathlord. But she is under control. Trust me."

If you weren't a Solar using Charms, probably this kind of outrageous claim would have been laughed away as the ramblings of a madman, but instead you see nothing but relief and trust in their eyes.

Good, because that's exactly what you need right now. Desperately so.

You pause for effect. The entire site, the entire city has fallen silent. People have gathered around you from all corners of Pearl now to hear from you.

Tia, you have no idea why, but probably trying to be helpful, grabs you and puts you on her shoulders, standing, then transforms under your feet in a massive auroch.

From your vantage point, the entire plaza can look up and see you. Beaming confidently, you summon a change of clothes and put on your golden, snake-themed jewels.

Time to make an impression.

Who knows with Tia? She's been an Exalted for a long time, and she seems to bury what she's thinking through acting on rash impulse. I still think she's fully aware of the past of her Lunar First Age counterpart, she just doesn't want to acknowledge it
>>
"The Manse will be our only hope for a fortifications here." You proclaim in a powerful voice. "If there has been any talk of fleeing this location and returning to Tianna, let me dispel it right now. We'll make our stand here. The Manse will be ready in time, and will be our fortress."

Astonished, indecisive, confused murmuring.

"It can be done, with your help and hard work and mustering all the powers, natural and supernatural, at our disposal. Several gods and numerous Exalted are on our side, and together we will redefine what "impossible" means."

The mumbles vanish into silence.

"I have no love for animated dead, or the demonspawn of the Yozi. But the Tyrant commands the former, and sorcery allows us to bend the latter to our will. I see no reason not to use them both to aid us."

Someone raises a hand. "Will they put us out of our jobs?"

"No, don't worry." You reply. "Their aid is just for the duration of this emergency. We are in no condition to turn down any help."

The crowd makes general noises of assent.

"Once the Manse will be complete, it will be our stronghold. The battle against Skullstone will probably be fought here."

Another hand. "...What about our houses and workshops? We just built them!"

You shake your head. "I'm sure you realize as well that it would be impossible to protect the entire city and fortify it in this short amount of time. We've elected to just focus on finishing the Manse, and having it act as our fortress. Inside, you will be safe. On the last day before the Silver Prince's armies arrive, bring food and those possessions you value the most inside. And I promise you that, if we survive, you will all be rewarded for this loss I'm forcing onto you."

Silence.

"For any problem any of you might have, form an ordered line and bring it up to me." You conclude, leaping down from Tia's back. Pearl is barely a city, and doesn't really have anything like a judge, law enforcement, or any administration.

For the city layout itself let's do a circular setup radiating from the Manse itself. This circle is separated into 4 boroughs that are each an homage to a specific Virtue. They can also be specific for different industries.

The borough we dedicate to the Valor of Ignis Divine will have armories, barracks, training grounds, dojos, stables, etc.

That's not an Exalted thing, that's a Threshold thing. People in Creation's Threshold region tend to name themselves with actual words or phrases. The canon character Harmonious Jade, for example, was named after the sound of jade coins being handed to the mother who sold her to a Yozi cult.

So no, Maka doesn't have a name like that. She has a name that actually means something - she's royalty.

There, updated, put two more mortals, Ocean Father and Senpai. Corrected Zareen's banged status.

I wonder if there will be enemy solars later in the quest. Scarlet Empress too.

There's one Solar working for Silver Prince that Karas told us about, I think he's a canon character too.

Scarlet Empress is harder, at this point she's still missing and the Realm is leaderless.
