Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you departed for Anthus, did yoga, and convinced the crew you're not planning on killing them all as they sleep.

It is currently the 7th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You depart the hold once the Captain calls the meal to an end, returning to your quarters for the night. At some point you'll likely be called to keep watch, but for now your time is your own. You resolve to spend that time reading up on what Varistha Sehzade had to say regarding magical theory.

Extracting the sheaf of notes from your cloak, you recline on the surprisingly comfortable bed you've been afforded. It takes you a few moments to separate out the pages you've already read from those that you haven't. It's not a particularly time consuming task, you've only read a handful of the nearly two dozen pages the Varistha has devoted to the topic. You're not looking for anything specific, so you simply begin to read the first unread page in the stack.

The writing is neat and careful, marking this as written fairly recently. All of the Varistha's older notes are written in barely legible chicken scratch. This particular page seems to relate to the nature of ambient vys. It seems to have been written before the Varistha fully realized that vys is a byproduct of the soul, and ambient vys simply the excess vys produced by the souls of living creatures.

The Varistha starts by proclaiming that ambient vys is not a natural phenomena. It is not caused by the position of the moon and stars, it is not a byproduct of geological processes, and it is almost certainly not simply an aspect of the air we breath. He claims that is a produced by something, though he has yet to discover the source. He posits that perhaps the air is filled with living creatures that are either invisible or too small for the eye to perceive, a completely ridiculous notion.

However, he guesses the true source when he suggest that it may also be excess vys which Vatis and other living creatures exude constantly. He also suggest that ambient vys may be caused by spirits of great power passing through an area, as it's well known that very powerful spirits produce truly monstrous amounts of vys. Enough to cause reality to warp and bend around them.

Leaving aside the origin of ambient vys, Varistha Sehzade proposes that ambient vys can be just as useful as the vys stored in one's reserves. Unfortunately, the page ends there. Flipping it over you find that the other side is dominated by a single illustration of a Rhynian generator. Apparently the Varistha had previous encounters with functioning generators and knew something of how they worked. Not surprising, considering his age.

You sort through the stack of papers, separating out all sheets which have any mention of ambient vys. Then you try to sort the selected pages, six in all, into a rough chronology. That done, you pick up where the first page ended. The Varistha claims that ambient vys can be used to power spells, boost the capabilities of enchanted objects, and has interesting properties all its own.

He goes off on a tangent about enchanting after that. Fortunately it's an interesting tangent. Apparently the Rhynians rarely created permanent enchantments. All of their major enchanted objects were powered by ambient vys drawn from generators. They were constantly replenished, and so never expired. Enchantments themselves do not simply 'wear off', in most cases at least. They lie dormant, waiting for their reserves of vys to be restored.

Getting back to the point of the Varistha's writings, he remarks that ambient vys can be used to fuel a spell if one can simply find a way to connect it to their reserves. He compares it to sort of channeling a spell inwards, or sucking ambient vys into oneself. He found that paying close attention to how his body drank in vys whilst meditating helped him to finally figure out how to actively do so, and compared it in some ways to a sort of modified leech spell.

According to the Varistha, this is easiest to do after first Grandmastering an element. One should find an area rich in vys already related to that particular element and attempt to go through the motions of casting a spell of the element they've achieved Grandmastery in without actually channeling vys from their reserves. Instead, they should try to draw ambient vys not into themselves, but into the spell.

He claims that spells cast in this way are very time consuming, often taking several minutes or even hours to cast. They also benefit for more strictly defined rituals, as rituals help to focus the mind on a task. Spells cast from ambient vys are best cast as a sort of team effort, with many vatis working together to draw vys into a single spell. He describes it as much, much safer than casting using the usual method, especially when casting large and complex spells, but overall less useful than the usual method of casing.

Whilst examining a few diagrams the late Varistha drew of Vatis casting spells using ambient vys and a few rituals he cooked up, you hear a knock on your door. You tuck the Varistha's notes into your cloak and rise from your bed, jerking the door open to find a man probably in his early hundreds waiting for you outside. He has the earliest hints of stuble on his upper lip and jawline, but not a true beard.

He jerks a thumb over his shoulder, indicating in a vague sort of way the rest of the ship. “S'your shift on watch, Cap'n's orders.”
(3/4 or 5)
>>
Seems you'll have to read up more on the Varistha's magical theories at a later date, unfortunately. “Very well. When will my watch end, and what exactly does keeping watch entail?”

The man squints at you a moment. “What'cha mean what'sa watch entail? Jus' keep yer eyes an' ears open for what's odd. You'll 'ave watch 'til the half, then you'll give it to Ashok, he's the big guy what's got tattoos, and Kishor, he's the short pirate. they'll keep it 'til dawn.”

Your people divide the night into five segments. It starts with nightfall, which is followed by half-risen, then midnight, then half-fallen, and then dawn. While not precise, it is a convenient way to divide shifts and generally keep time. Judging by the hour, you'll presumably be keeping the watch until the moon has fallen halfway towards the horizon.

You shut your cabin door behind you as you ascend the steps alongside the crewman. You find your companion on this watch will be the wiry, snaggle-toothed fellow who professed his distrust of Vatis. You greet one another but then go your separate ways. You take up position atop the aftcastle while he takes up position at the prow. Naturally, having the better vantage point, much of the responsibility lies on your shoulders to alert the others should you spot anything out of the ordinary.

Your shift on watch is uneventful. You spot nothing unusual over the course of your three or so hour watch. The wind does seem unusually strong, and the waves tend to knock the ship about a bit, but it's nothing that the steersman can't handle. When your shift comes to an end, your snaggle-toothed companions volunteers to alert the others of their shift and you return to your room to get some sleep. After all, a strong wind often indicates a storm on the horizon and you want to be well rested just in case you're called upon to help keep the ship afloat.

(4/5)
>>
Your prediction proves correct, and over the course of the next two days at sea you often find yourself in the lowest reaches of the ship. After all, someone must bail the water out of the bilge and considering your abilities you alone are far better at doing so than an entire team of men with buckets. It's not a taxing job, the storms are not particularly heavy, but it is a boring job.

You find that the life of a sailor is a life of routine. Meals are taken at the same time every day and your duties vary little from day to day. You find that, despite being relatively unused to the task of sailing, you slip into a routine where you spend most of your days working, taking your meals with the crew. At night, when you're not on watch, you usually meditate.

Mortia.
The rest of the female cast is stuck far beneath her, relegated to supporting all the various tiers they would be on were she not a character I have decided to include in this quest.

People seemed interested in doing meditation on forms at the end of last thread, so you'll do that with metal since they sorta/kinda work well together. Really, meditation on forms would do best as a fire meditation but there are no maluses to doing it with either Metal or Earth. The -2 comes from your lack of understanding of the forms themselves.

You'll be trying to sense ocean life and generally extend the range of your extrasensory abilities as well as enhance the clarity of your extrasensory capabilities. I picked this because it offers you the largest bonus, since it nets you a +6 from piggybacking off your understanding of Water magic.

As for animate, you'll just be using the stock method described in the scroll.

Oi playas. Since Karim didn't know anything about the singing vys phenomenon we experienced when we axd him and instead spoke to us about his peer who succumbed to the void I've since developed a hypothesis in need of scrutiny of which the varistha's notes reminded me.

So what we experienced only happened when we'd had our soul deadened or muted or whatever, it was dimmer than it should've been by Mik's account when we got around to taking a gander, 's the point.
According to Sehzade Vys is a soul byproduct and also a sort of poison, and that's why it made sense that it carries properties of the soul, magically responding to the will and concentration of whatever is channeling it capped to their varied and specific limitations as its accrued and cast by any enchantments, vatis or spiritshites. For vatis he said it was basically just getting used to the poison of soul leftovers.

For our experience I think w/happened was that when the soul itself is dimmed, by whatever prolonged effect our proximity to the void caused be it soul attrition or w/e, it let our soul experience Vys differently.
Expanding on that I think the fact that vys is a byproduct of the soul means that any dulled soul isn't giving off as much byproduct of its own and lets it see how vys is w/o a 'full' soul in that way. Like it acted as interference. Shit seems obvious but I'm bad with words and sure I've missed a clarification somewhere. Moreover it wouldn't be an original experience since the void has been around forever and vatis have screwed w/it in the past, there's prob some info out there about it.

Not that this is anything practically usable but I thought it would have interesting implications for how vys may be more mechanically perceivable through enchantments, and that if it sings from the perspective of dulled souls there are probably variable sounds which reveal vys types and how its being manipulated and shit. Just lategame enchantments beyond what our helms already do, basically.

This. Took a bit. Then there was what Karim told us when we asked him about the void, but that was more recent after we got the house, and our meditation on what caused us to go bonkers. Lots of stuff spread out.

Rereading one anons response to it just reminded me that it also could've just been because of our trial by dinner surgery with Ricky & Friends, though it wouldn't really explain it as anything but shock and void madness.

Ok, got it now.
>>
>>38777593
I think it would make more sense that since the spirit had leeched itself to our soul Ricky took some of what was us out with that spirit, and since it was fairly violent it was probably worse for us than using permanency because that's more conscientious on our part. A golem is not just moving shit. You can do that now with elements or the manipulate spell. A golem is something that is capable of acting independently of its creator. Anything given a mind with the animate spell is a golem, because it can act independently of its creator. However, at the most basic level goelms are only capable of understanding very simple commands. Things like "walk forward", "stand here", "attack him", and "follow me". Runes are used to... enhance a golems intelligence, but only certain runes.
>>
So what golems should we make? I kinda want a giant Golem that's used for transportation and is a walking fortress.

I was thinking maybe a Nature+Water for something like a hardened mud golem. The nature so it could be a sniffer of sorts and made from Mud so it wouldn't be as susceptible to fire. Not to mention we also right next to an ocean so it having water capabilities would be useful.

I was also thinking we'd make one from metal with the help of Fulvia and maybe Skull Kid? Just don't know what ore/metal we should use.

I wonder since you could make armor from palaka worms would it be possible to make a golem from its shell?

Over the course of the voyage you manage to advance your understanding of Metal and Nature magic as well as learn a new effect. What you learned of Nature magic was particularly interesting. Whilst sitting on your bed you expanded your senses to the world around you, focusing your attention towards the hull of the ship and the ocean below. Immediately the members of the crew began to glow bright green in your vision, but oddly enough the water itself began to glow a paler shade of green. You weren't sure what to make of it at first.

The pale green glow which pervaded the ocean water made it difficult to differentiate between the water and the fish swimming in it. Usually you could differentiate between the fish and the water because the fish were a darker shade of green, but the further out you tried to sense the less distinct the colors got, until they just sort of blended together. At some point far, far beneath the ship itself your perception must have cut out, because you couldn't see a thing beyond five hundred feet.

Initially you tried to determine what was making the water itself glow, but you had no luck. Presumably ocean water, for some strange reason, absorbs vys. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact the ocean is composed of salt water? You know fresh water doesn't glow in the same way that the ocean seems to. You briefly contemplated whether it was possible for tiny creatures to dwell within the ocean, but that's ridiculous. Plus, why would tiny creatures live in the ocean but not in lakes and streams?

Regardless, you never figured out how to filter out the pale green glow of the ocean but you did eventually figure out that you can expand the range of your perception by using the minds of other, simpler creatures as sort of jumping off points. You couldn't do it with humans, but with fish you could sort of temporarily overpower their thoughts and use their own senses to boost the range of your pereption.

As for Metal magic, you just went through forms whilst attempting to reinforce your body. You came to realize that you weren't really just reinforcing your skin, but rather your muscles and bones as well. Unfortunately, you still don't quite understand the mechanics of how you're reinforcing your body. You just sort of know how to channel vys in order to get the desired effect. You do felt that your forms grew better. Taking the time to go through each different step, twist, strike, and contortion slowly and carefully really helped you realize a few small mistakes you'd been making.

The effect you learned, animate, proved complex. You read that animate was essentially giving an object a mind so that it might function on its own. The author was very careful to clarify that animating a broom will not make it clean a room for you, and that the objects animated were not given souls or anything of the like. They are merely able to think and act for themselves, so long as there is an action they can perform unassisted.

The chapter on animate went on to state that the mind is a byproduct of vys. Specifically, it's a byproduct of pure, undiluted vys. The author explained that undiluted vys is the result of combining Water, Fire, Earth, Nature, and Metal magic together. That channeling vys into any one particular school of magic requires tearing away all other types of magic inherent in pure vys, or altering something about channeled vys to turn it into a different kind of channeled vys. The author freely admits that they don't fully understand the process, as their research is still ongoing, but they do know that the mind is a byproduct of vys.

To you, that seemed hard to believe. While it's true that a person will lose consciousness if their vys reserves are depleted, the knowledge that vys is merely a byproduct of the soul makes you question whether or not the mind could in turn be a byproduct of vys. It would make more sense to you if the mind was some separate byproduct of the soul, or perhaps an aspect of the soul itself. You also know that the mind is apparently something distinct which can be manipulated, as you have a spear which is said to destroy an enemy's mind.

Fortunately even if the author didn't understand how animate truly worked, they at least understood how to meditate on it. The author suggested carving a lattice into a wooden or stone surface, the more complex the better. They also suggested that the user do so using magic, rather than mundane tools. Once the lattice is carved, the author suggested attempting to recreate the lattice using pure vys.

To you, the fact you needed to create a lattice to cast the animate spell was curious. Especially considering what you know of the threads which bind together reality. Perhaps animate was not so much creating a mind as it was tricking the threads which bind reality into thinking the object in question has a mind? Like some sort of very basic form of enchantment.

Creating pure vys itself was difficult, but you managed it eventually. It cost an inordinate amount of vys to do so. You ended up saturating your room with the vys which bled off as you attempted to channel all five elements at once. You managed it, but it wasn't easy. Then you ended up needing three or four tries to weave the pure vys into a lattice that you carved on the wood of the hall. Finally, once you figured that out, you wrapped the latice of pure vys around the head of a small ice figurine that you created.

>>38780774
Yeah, actually.
>>
Much to your surprise, the figurine came to life. It moved of its own free will, took a few steps forward, and collapsed. Apparently being alive is incredibly taxing for objects, and it quickly consumed the vys you spent weaving the lattice. It seems animate is going to prove to be a terribly costly spell, unfortunately.

When you weren't either deep in meditation or working, you spent most of your time with the crew. You were mostly curious to learn what they'd heard of lands abroad. Apparently there was some sort of big uproar over the fact that a group of Vatis managed to declare their independence from the Kingdom of Aleamond. The King himself granted the conclave a tower outside of the capital and a few acres of land surrounding the tower, and gave them their independence. Of course, the new nation is a glorified puppet of Aleamond, but it means that Vatis in Aleamond have some place to go if they want to escape persecution.

Nobody is sure why the King, who's father was killed by a insane old Vatis only a decade ago, would do this. One of the sailors heard that the Queen is actually a secret Vatis, and the King's newborn son and heir inherited her ability to perform magic. Another sailor heard that the King's chief advisor was secretly a Vatis and used his influence to convince the King it was a good idea. Another heard that the King had sent ten thousand men to slaughter the conclave of Vatis but the Vatis, with the help of a handful of Samjan of course, managed to beat back the Aleamondian army.
>>
Another sailor has news of the situation in Elven Lands. Apparently that warlord is making stead progress in subduing the disparate Elven tribes. They've only recently conquered the Valley of Teeth in the Eastern Mountains, apparently the capital of a massive tribal coalition which encompasses most of the Elves which dwell in those mountains. The coalition is expected to capitulate and join the Warlord. He's already styling himself Autokrator, the Elven term for Emperor and has taken to wearing a heavy crown of gold and jewels. He's established his capital at Sosae, a city built entirely almost entirely on top of a massive lake using stilts and artificial islands.

Another one of the sailors apparently had a personal encounter with the raiders from far to the north. He was working on a ship which was taking a load of cargo to a city-state on the far northern edge of the Rhynian mainland a few years ago. The ship was attacked and boarded. They managed to fight off the raiders, but it was a close thing and they had to limp their way home with only a handful of crewmen. He describes them as incredibly short, no more than five feet at most with most of them averaging around four and a half, and very pale. He says they carried axes as big as they were tall, and swung them around like they weighed nothing. Apparently they were also resistant to spells, and covered from head to toe in blocky tattoos.

Other than that you mostly learn of inconsequential things. Marqash is being Marqash. The second largest city in El-Amin has been striving for autonomy practically since the Shahdom was formed. Apparently raids across the border have been stepped up. Some say the Shah is preparing to wage a war against the Samrat. You're not convinced. Raiding on the border is fairly normal for both the troops of the Shahdom and the troops of the Samrajya.

By the third day of your journey you're within sight of Anthus. Everyone is looking forward to reaching port and getting a chance to really cut loose, and you're looking forward to both collecting on the money you're owed and getting this business of killing Chryssa's husband underway. The Captain has broken out the liquor early and a good number of the crew are already drunk. Personally, you're enjoying a sparring session against some of the other crew. The weather is sunny and the seas calm, you're not immediately needed.

After getting your weapon knocked out of your hand for the fourth time in as many minutes, you decide to take a breather. Your arms are going to be covered in bruises by the end of this. Whilst resting your head against a barrel, you notice something odd. A dark shape moving across the sky. It has four legs and two wings, a long tail and a long neck, and an angular head. You realize with some concern that it's a dragon. Out in broad daylight.

Guys just throwing this out there.
We can meditate on mental fortification now.
We also have a way to work on it.
Eatting part of your soul or some shit.
Also I would recommend reading the metal codex.using metal magic ofcourse And Dhatu would likely give us either a more advanced version of body hardening, or much more likely mental fortification. And winning his "approval" might unlock something in the book.
Or allow us into a certain way to meditate to get the best ban for our buck in metal magic. And since mental fortification is top tier shit it would likely relate to mental fortifications.

You watch it for a while. It seems to be slowly circling the ship, never actually flapping its wings. You imagine it would be fairly simple for a dragon to create its own updrafts for it to glide on. It doesn't seem hostile. It's just flying around up there. You're not entirely sure how large it is from this distance, but it doesn't seem nearly as large as the mother. You'd guess that it's perhaps twenty feet long, and bulky. Probably an adolescent.

One of the other crewmen whacks you likely in the stomach with one of the staves you've been using as sparing weapons. “Come on, Mikhael. Quit daydreaming. Thought you wanted to learn to fight.”

Rubbing your gut, you push yourself to your feet. Briefly you consider informing the other crewmen, but that would likely just incite panic. You'll just keep an eye on it to see if it makes a move.

It follows you all the way into the port of Anthus before making its move. You've slipped through the massive stone statues that flank either side of the artificial harbor and the Captain has called you up to the aftcastle to help guide the ship into one of the available piers. There aren't many other ships at port, so yours is a simple task. You take your eyes off the dragon for a moment to navigate the vessel around a hunk of debris, and when you look back up you see that it's diving towards you, rapidly closing on your ship.

>Point out the dragon to the rest of the crew, tell them to grab some weapons.

My party had an artifact like that they kept in a bag of holding, a bunch of "enhanced sun orbs" my DM made up to power his flying fortress cities. Our rogue/artificer figured a way to compress them into layers and press that into a sword.
It's not a very good sword as for as purpose built swords go, but it burns everything to cinders and that's what made it special in our hearts.
>>
How about we talk to the dragon and nothing gets destroyed.

Best idea. Maybe we can lead it on a wild goose chase into the Elaudian Jungle. Convince it we say a dragon flying off into it.

You reach out towards the dragon with your thoughts. You can feel it's mind, but unlike with the brooches or with Zahak you can't really force your thoughts into its head. You try shouting out to it mentally, but you just feel like it's pointless. Your thoughts roll off of the dragon's mind. Then, an idea occurs to you. Metal magic can reinforce one's mind, correct? Well, maybe doing so will make you better able to communicate mentally.

You attempt to do so, channeling Metal magic into your thoughts. It's a strange sensation. It reminds you in many ways of hardening your body whilst meditating, except the target is different. Your fear is gone. Indeed, as are almost all of your emotions. You don't feel excited, you don't feel scared, you don't feel worried, glad, sad, angry, or really much of anything. All that remains is cold, unfeeling logic.

You focus your thoughts towards the dragon and manage to push past its mental defenses with surprising ease, forcing your thoughts into its head. {Stop. We do not mean you harm and have no wish for conflict.}

The dragon flares its wings, flapping twice to change its course. It ends up soaring towards the city but quickly loops itself around and gains altitude, returning once more to circling your ship as you split your attention between maintaining the spell on your own mind and guiding the ship into one of the open docks.

You feel a presence exploring your mental defenses, and then a voice pushes into your thoughts. Your head begins to ache terribly as its voice thunders through your mind. {Me hitz egin dezakezu? Zer sorginkeriarekin da hau? Ez zaude dragoi bat. Ulertzen didazu?}

You have no fucking clue what in the name of the Gods this thing just said. You know for a fact that wasn't Samjan, Elven, Rhynian, or any language concocted by mortal minds. {What?}

There is a long silence, and then the dragon changes its course. It coast peacefully towards the distant mountains. You're not really sure what to think of this encounter. Did you just confuse it to such a degree that it needed to rethink its life?

Regardless, you manage to guide the ship into dock without incident and the crew take care of tying down the ship. Two of the dockworkers slide a ramp over the guardrail and climb aboard, while another maneuvers a crane hook so that it sits above the grated entrance to the hold. One of the crew swings of the grate while others go below decks to start unloading.

The Captain approaches you whilst you're busy reflecting on the fact that you just saved the city from a dragon attack and not a soul will ever know. He claps you companionably on the shoulder and hands you a small sack, coins jangling within. “You've done good work by me, Mikhael. Good work. What you have there is a bonus for your work. Thirty gold, all yours." That's probably more than a year's worth of pay for some people. Four hundred fifty silver. A paltry sum for you, of course. "I know playing bilge rat isn't fun no matter what sort of magic you have at your disposal. I have a man in mind to sell my cargo to, do you know where you'll be staying? If not, you can room with myself and the crew until I can pay you.”

You gesture towards the distant dome of the Academy, barely visible amidst the chaos that is the city skyline. “I'll be staying at the Academy of Anthus. I have friends there who will give me a room. If you'd like, you can send my pay there. If not, I could come and collect it from you once you've sold your goods.”

He holds up a hand, begging pause. “There's no need for that. I'll send a promissory note in an envelope marked with your name up to the academy. You can collect your pay from the Bank of Anthus, I have an account there. Just ask around, it's in the Upper District. I'm sure you'll find it quite easily.”

The two of you shake hands, and then you disembark. Banking isn't precisely rare in El-Amin, but usually private families serve as bankers. Your family, for instance, is a banking family. Your father often loans out money and holds funds for other nobles and even a few wealthy merchants. That was partly why your banishment was such a blow to your family. Without a doubt, many of your father's clients withdrew their money from their accounts and paid off their loans. Thus preventing your family from collecting on interest and fees.

With your hands shoved into your pockets you make your way through the streets of Anthus. It's only shortly after midday, and the streets are busy. You're near the market, so you might do some shopping. A thought strikes you suddenly, quickly coming to consume your thoughts.

The Academy of Anthus has a Vys scroll in its library. You passed it by the first time you saw it.

waste of money, we'll never use them
same for armor manuals
>>
>>38783059
we're rich, and think of the haggling we can do for them!
>>
>>38783059
I threw in the metas+nature since i noticed that we are starting to make a dent in them(we read a lot of them, just not learned them).
As for the manuals, are you seriously gonna think anons will pass up a chance to finally have all the info they need about their gear?
>>
>>38783013
You talking about Fleshcrafting, which if you weren't a retard or a faggot you'd know is a thing since it's been mentioned in the quest.
But I'm not talking about that, this is about the relationahip between Water and Nature, and animal/plant tissues relationships, and if we can control planta to this degree we may be able to use that knowledge later in Fleshcrafting. Also, can do this with Ice too, try to make an anatomically correct ice arm simultaneously, see if we can't figure out some shit about ice.

We're not rich any more, at least compared to before.

Yes.
Also, no need to waste money if we can figure things out, I'd rather try that first.

We're still rich as shit. And our Monetary wealth is nothing to what we have in property and items.

I have spent longer with trying to convince people to test what the cloak does, and they always put it off for more interesting stuff, do you really think they are gonna choose taking our shit apart over reading a book(manual)?

Pretty rich actually.

The realization of your own idiocy leaves you momentarily paralyzed. Without really realizing it your feet start to carry you forward, pounding against the pavement as you break out into a run. You realize distantly that you're mumbling to yourself incoherently. You are sent sprawling to the ground when you bowl into a cart as it rumbles through the street, spilling its contents across the road, cabages you think. Unfortunately you've no time to stop, you merely take off at a sprint after forcing yourself to your feet.

You bowl over women and children, shoulder past guards, dodge horses and guar, and duck past checkpoints in your mad dash towards the Upper District and the Academy of Anthus. You realize in a vague sort of way that you're being followed. Followed by multiple people, in fact. However, the cacophany of pounding feet behind you barely seems important. You're on a mission. You're not to be deterred.

As you approach the gate that separates the Upper District from the Lower the guards at the gate lower their pikes, angling them towards you. Unfortunately you can't afford to slow down, and with a thought the ground between them becomes a strip of perfectly smooth ice. As you approach the guards you fall backwards, sliding beneath their weapons and manifesting a pillar of ice beneath you to push you to your feet on the other side. Arrows fly past your head, one striking a man in the throat as you run past. With barely a thought you rip it out using Nature magic and heal the wound using Water.

(1/3)
>>
Once you're in the Upper District your goal is in sight. The Academy of Anthus is just ahead, you can see the guards standing at the gates. They try to stop you as well, barring the entrance with their swords. You create a series of pillars to serve as a set of steps in front of them, charging up one step at a time and leaping off the top. You sail over the guards and land on a smooth slide of ice you constructed just on the other side of the fence which separates the Academy from the surroundings. You land on your feet and keep running.

The gates are a simpler challenge. All you need is brute force. Whilst running across the lucious grounds of the Academy you manifest a boulder of ice twice as large as you are and as dense as you can manage. You hurl it forward with all your mental might and are rewarded with a deafening crack as it slams into the gates, blowing them open and sending the guards on the other side sprawling. You sprint past them, into the academy.

A bolt of fire flies across the room, but you snuff it out with a flick of your wrist. Someone hurls a bolt of ice at you, but it evaporates before it gets near. A spike rises from the ground to impale you as you sprint forward but it's stopped short, serving as a stepping stone to allow you to leap over a wall of vines which has burst forth to block your path. Your mind is devoted to a single goal. You exist for but one purpose. To retrieve that scroll from the library and learn the secrets it contains. You cannot fail. You won't allow yourself to fail.

You reach the library, erecting a thick wall of ice to block the entrance. You don't anticipate it will last long, considering the number of Vatis in this place and the guards outside. You feel your reserves draining away as you spend to keep it in place against the onslaught of the Vatis and guards outside. Fortunately, you're a Grandmaster. You could keep this up for a while. The only other people in the library seem to be the woman at the front desk, a young elven woman, and a handful of apprentices who seem too confused or scared to act.

You march across the room, breath ragged and eyes wide. The library woman shrinks away from you, holding out her hand and channeling vys. A jet of flame shoots from her palm, but it merely flows around you as it grows near. The next instant you extinguish it, laying your hands flat against the front desk and leaning forward, an impossibly wide grin splitting your features.

You ask in Rhynian, using the politest tone you can muster. “Excuse me, Miss. Do you happen to have the metamagic scroll of Vys in stock?”

It does other shit too. Like weaken your mind to outside intrusion, allow the entity to do shit sometimes, help with enchanting, so on and so forth.

Nigga bouta have some fun with phonics.

>>38783644
Ehh, you couldn't really fight with ice skating. I mean, I guess you could. In some sort of blades of glory-esque sort of thing. Mainly it's a way to get around quickly if you need to or dodge shit.

It's reasonable considering his insanity level.

Entertaining too.

Not something a sane person would do.

Excellent post, Soma, I love it.

I guess the first answer of the librarian will be "What? ...what?"
And the funny thing is, if she answers no (because she might not know the contents of the special library), we can tell her "yes you have, it's in the restricted library section, I saw it there in thread five" so she will have certainty that we are insane.

>>38783471
Except for the Prof and Zahak pastebins there have been no POV changes, I'm for it.

>>38783502
The thread was misarchived again, the description lacks "Soma cannot into secure trips"
>>
Well that was fun.

Wonder how that spoiled princess we saved is doing with news of her father's death.
>>
>>38783434
That was hilarious Soma. Really got me laughing.

We should watch our Sanity for a couple of weeks though. I am hoping we will not face anything that will lose us sanity in this side quest to kill Chryssa's husband. And if we rest and prepare for our next journey for a week afterwards that will restore us 1-2 sanity at least. We would be within our comfort zone then.

>>38784966
Yeah, I am curious about her too. We should see her while we are here, after we meet up with (our business partner and head of the academy whose names I've forgotten).
