Hey everyone, sorry I couldn’t run earlier in the week but that’s what happens when I procrastinate!

Sorry for the lateness as well, had some stuff to do when I got home.

Anyway, should have a decent thread today, hope you all enjoy it!

>Fate Point:1
>Money: $450
>Equipment: Tier 1 Assault Rifle. Tier 1 Armor (+2 wounds). Tier 1 Pistol. Standard Ammo (4). Tier 1 Knife. Tier 1 Bandolier (2). (Carry Capacity, 1 Ammo, 1 Misc) Tier 1 Rucksack. (Carry Capacity 4.) Clothes (3). Blanket (4). Quality Lighter. Tier 1 Med-kit. Tier 2 Med-kit. Tier 1 Toolkit.

Your name is…ow pain. Well, not really, your name is William. But the first thing you notice when you wake up in the morning is that your head hurts. It’s not the worst thing you’ve ever felt, especially compared to beatings, but it’s not pleasant.

It doesn’t help that your mouth is very dry as well, moving your tongue doesn’t seem to help bring any moisture to it.

When you open your eyes the brightness hurts enough that you decide to close them again.

While not the worst morning you’ve ever had, it’s still not great.

You decide that you should…

Devil confirmed. Trying to ruin Will.

I actually think its still to early for Will to make meaningful progress. He was imprisoned and forced to wage war for five years minimum and probably regressed mentally. He has been out of it for about two or three months now, and he is still in a Merc company.

That's a fair point. He's made some progress, though. I think Will's starting to understand, little by little, that these are people he can trust. Most of them have been looking out for him in their own way. It doesn't have to be a big step, but even a slight step will be enough.

Thirsty. That’s all that you can think of at the moment, how insanely thirsty you are. Even over the pounding of your aching head your dry mouth begs for relief. You manage to sit upright, barely, even as you grasp at your throbbing skull. Getting to your feet is more effort than you expect, your legs still a little wobbly.

You somehow manage to notice that you aren’t in either your boots or your walking around gear, which surprises you slightly but you’re still too focused on water to care. Your door is rather loud when you open it, you should probably check it later when you get the chance. Every other door in the hallway is still closed you notice, doing your normal check for people/things more important than you before you exit. Taking the few necessary steps down to the washroom’s closed door, you open it and step inside.

There is your goal, the spout on the wall.

You take the next few steps and turn the spout, sticking your head underneath it so you can greedily drink up every last bit of water before it has a chance to even hit the basin. You don’t think you’ve ever tasted water this good, even after a hard day of work around The Compound. Water was one thing that you never suffered for, even if you did have to drink after everyone else.

After what feels like hours of glorious cool wetness, but is in reality maybe a minute or two, your mind clears enough that you notice something. The other spigot is running too.

Turning your still throbbing head carefully you are greeted with a strange sight.

Mary is standing under the other spigot without clothes on, her hair and body wet as she stares at you in surprise, her arms across her chest and down her stomach. You must have interrupted her.

She doesn’t say anything, simply watching you.

You…

You blink at Mary once more before something in the slowly calming mass of achiness you call a brain reminds you that you probably shouldn’t be here. You forget why exactly you shouldn’t be in here, but you’re pretty sure you aren’t. Turning back around, you turn off the water in the spigot and turn towards the door, shutting it behind you as you head to your room. Putting on your boots and your walking around belt, you head downstairs, the door to the washroom still shut.

You make your way to the kitchen and the other water spigot, using one of the cups you eventually drink three glasses full before filling a fourth, starting to drink it as you hear feet walking into the kitchen. Turning around you see Mary, now dressed though her hair is still wet. You can’t really describe the look on her face, but you don’t think it’s bad…at least not yet.

She gives you a gentle smile as you stare and takes a seat at the table, tapping the top with her hand.

“Come sit down Will,” she says, to which you nod and sit, glass of water still in hand.

You sit down and Mary watches you for a bit before saying anything else.

“You’re up early,” she says, “I thought you’d still be asleep for a bit longer.”

You just remain watching her, wondering what’s going on.

“Did you know I was in the shower when you came in?” she asks you.

“No,” you say.

“Why’d you come in?” she asks.

“Thirsty,” you reply, holding the glass of water.

Mary smiles at that.

“That’s what happens when you drink too much,” she says, seeming to relax a little bit.

You take this as a good sign and take a small sip of water from your glass, but you keep your eyes on her.

“Why’d you leave?” asks Mary.

“What?” you ask her.

“Why’d you leave the washroom?” she asks again.

You look at Mary as you try very hard to think of why you left. It’s not an easy thing for you to do, mostly because you aren’t used to thinking about why you do things. You help out because it keeps you alive. You clean things because people like it when you do that. You shoot the targets because otherwise they’re going to shoot you. Life is simple that way, if not exactly easy.

But lately you’ve had more time, where there wasn’t anything to fix, where you had to think about things, how to be useful. Learning how to fix people is useful and you still do that, especially with Doc Smith. You even thought enough to decide you like MMS. But that doesn’t help you out so much now, not enough. It’s like…it’s like there’s something there, just out of reach but you can’t see it or reach it or even touch it. But you know it’s there.

It’s not that she was in the room, you’re allowed to be in the room with other people as long as you’re quiet and don’t disturb them. Some of them still didn’t want you in there, so they’d yell at you, but Mary has never yelled at you.

So it was something else. You just don’t know what.

“I…it’s not……it’s not right…I think,” you say to her, looking up and shrugging helplessly. You just don’t know how to explain it better.

Despite this lack of proper answer, Mary smiles at you.

“That’s right Will,” she says, “You aren’t supposed to go in the washroom when other people are naked. Do you remember why?”

You shake your head no, but you feel like it’s right on the tip of your tongue.

“It’s because they’re naked,” she says, “You aren’t supposed to see other people naked.”

You nod your head at that.

“Am I in trouble?” you ask, prepared to either receive your punishment or be made to do something.

“No,” she says, giving you a reassuring smile, “It’s not a big deal, you did it on accident.”

You nod your head, happy you aren’t going to get beaten.

Mary simply smiles at you as she stands up, heading towards the box where the food is kept.

“Are you ok Will?” she asks you.

You look at Mary as she stands up and starts getting the stove ready, the food already laid out on the top of the kitchen counter.

“Can I help?” you ask her as she turns towards the food.

“Hmm…” she says, looking at the food, “You can crack eggs, come here and I’ll show you how.”

You stand up, leaving your glass of water on the table as you move over to where Mary is waiting for you.

“Now I want you to do this for all of them, ok?” she says, gesturing to the pretty big pile of eggs that she usually sets out.

“Ok,” you say.

“You just take the egg, like this,” she says, showing you how to hold it in your hand, “And crack it on the side of the bowl.”

She does so, only using a little bit of force.

“Now you try,” she says.

You nod, doing exactly what she showed you. Well, close enough, yours is a little messy but she seems to think it’s ok.

“Good job Will,” she says, going back to the bacon slices as the stove heats up, “Now do all of them.”

You nod, getting to work cracking eggs.

A few minutes later after you’re done with most of the eggs, that questioning voice in your head comes back.

“Mary?” you ask.

“Yes Will?” she answers as the bacon sizzles and she takes the eggs from you.

“Why aren’t you supposed to see people naked?” you ask her.

“Hmm…” she says, focusing on the food, “do you not remember why?”

“No…” you say.

“Well…it’s generally considered to be bad,” she says, smiling briefly at you, “Because…well, it’s mostly considered bad because boys and girls are different.”

You nod your head.

“So it’s important for you to keep that in mind if you ever see a girl naked, unless she says it’s ok you shouldn’t look.”

“If she says it’s ok?” you ask, confused.

“Ah, well I don’t think that’s going to happen to you,” says Mary with a smile, “So just don’t look at naked girls, ok?”

You nod your head.

“What about boys?” you ask.

Mary chuckles at that.

“Well I don’t think you’ll very many naked men,” she says, “But generally it’s ok, though some won’t like it. So just look away if they don’t want you to look.”

“Ok,” you say, taking a plate of turning to see Morrigan staring at the two of you, her mouth open.

“Are you ok?” you ask her, plate of bacon in hand.

“I’m…I’m fine…” says Morrigan, moving to slump into a seat at the table.

Soon after when Mary brings the eggs over, everyone is at the table.

Mary takes a seat next to you, Morrigan already on your other side.

“Will,” she asks you as you dig into your food, “Do you remember giving me money last night?”

You pause, nodding at a vaguely remembered memory.

“Did you actually mean that?” she asks, “Four hundred and fifty dollars is a lot of money.”

“They helped,” you say as you clear your mouth of food. You distinctly remember that everyone helped you stay up to win the money, even if you don’t remember how.

“Alright Will,” says Mary, still handing you a stack of money, “This is your cut then.”

>Gained $75. Total now $525.

You nod, taking the money.

“Everyone,” says Mary, causing most of them to look up immediately, though Nem is still eating, “Will has decided to share last nights winnings with everyone else.”

That causes Nem to look up, everyone else’s eyes widening a little bit.

“Damn Will,” says Morrigan as she reaches over and takes one of the stacks Mary has, “You didn’t need to do that.”

“Everyone helped,” you say, finishing your food.

“Well I poured shots I guess,” says Nem, scooping up her money.

Cath and Bellona just look at you as they scoop up the money Mary gave them.

Sarah looks surprised as Mary hands her a stack as well.

“I didn’t…” she starts.

“You watched the building for me,” says Mary, “And we’re good on company funds right now.”

“Ok…” says Sarah, pocketing her money.

You finish breakfast shortly afterwards, everyone packing up and helping clean.

You see Bellona looking at you some more, before being distracted by Cath bumping into her.
You ignore it though as it’s none of your business, merely stepping outside to the main lobby to read since Doc Smith isn’t going to have anyone around at this time of day.

As you’re picking up your book, which Doc Smith had said was a good start but not as good as a real education, you hear a knock on the door, looking up in time to see the man from last night come in wearing a fresh looking uniform.

“Hello there son,” he says with a grin, “Already up and at em huh? Better than a few of my boys you outdrank.”

You just look at him and nod, wondering what he wants.

“Is your boss around?” he says, “I have a proposition for you.”

“Morrigan!” you call back to the kitchen, causing Morrigan to stick her head out.

“What Billy?” she says, before seeing the man, “Oh, it’s you.”

“You’re the boss?” asks the man, apparently a little surprised.

“Yeah, I’m Morrigan,” says Morrigan, straightening up and taking a few steps into the lobby, “Of Morrigan Military Solutions. You got a problem with that?”

“No,” says the man with a shrug, “I just thought the purple haired one was in charge.”

“That’s Mary,” says Morrigan, “She’s the secretary.”

“That explains it,” says the man, “Anyway, I had a proposition for you, something that could make us both some money, you interested?”

“Got any details first?” asks Morrigan.

“It involves hitting Salina,” he says, “I’ll need your team to go in before the main wave. More than that is dependent on your interest. Pays more than what the army is giving for joining the main assault.”

Right. I'm just worried it'll sound like a good deal. We get out there. Have us do our job. Then kill us. Or.. offer us merger.. then kill us.

Even if the worst case scenario doesn't happen. We might be at risk of becoming their bitch. They pay us. The military pays them. We more or less end up working for mars... without working for mars.
>>
>>38818927
This!
>>
>>38819265
What reason would they have to shoot us in the back beyond "lulz we're evil!"? Sure, they might try to stretch the contract in their favor, but to some extent, there's always "we were hired for this specific task: either pony up more cash, or we aren't lifting a finger for you".
>>
>>38819265
You are exaggerating a bit, and both companies base operations are different, ours is for small and tactical missions while theirs ir more for assault and warfare.
I don't think this means that we are becoming their bitch, more like they need us, our team work IS being some kind of stealth group.
>>
I doubt the town is big enough for them to commit large amount of effort into securing it for their company.
>>
>>38819265
Calm your shadowruns.
>>
>>38819162
Mars is already an extremely large and successful mercenary company, and honestly, they deal on a completely different scale from MMS. They aren't going to set up shop in a place like this. It's too small for a permanent presence of theirs, they're here to deal with the large camp, then move on. They don't want to deal with the small local bullshit that is MMS's bread and butter.

Them hiring us for scouting is probably because they want a small group that knows the area, instead a platoon of groundpounders.

>>38819265
They probably won't, there's little reason to risk serious damage to their reputation, and possibly losing a couple men, for the amount of money they'll be paying us.
>>
>>38819339
Not, "Lulz we're evil."

Just killing off competition. Everyone hated these guys so them being all reasonable is flipping my paranoia switches.

>>38819346
Just because they've got a large group doesn't mean they're incapable of tactical missions. They may just want to use us in this particular instance because we've already scouted the area.

>>
>>38819433
A bad reputation does not equate to drooling idiocy, and that's exactly what it would take to try to murder a mercenary group on a cooperative mission. One surviving witness, and all of a sudden you have murder trials and enough bad press to drown your average Hollywood fame whore.

It's not even very much money, or a very large amount of competition. A big group is not going to risk huge amounts of bad press for knocking off such a tiny competitor.
>>
>>38819501
To add on to this Morrigan's company isnt a very profitable company. When we started out we used old Weapons that were scavenged. You see Morrigan’s face twitch a couple times, she seems to want to tell the guy no, but a job is on the table. Job’s mean money, money means food and booze. Therefore money is important.

“Details,’ she finally says, “Details and payment before you’ll get a yes or no out of me. Then an actual contract, on paper, filed to the army before we lift a finger. All that is if I fucking agree to it. You got me?”

The man snorts at her and nods his head.

“I gotcha,” he says, “You’re as tough as they said you’d be.”

“Who said what?” says Morrigan.

“I know people,” says the man, “Who know people who know about you. Not a lot, but enough to say you were a tough bitch.”

“Yeah well they’re right,” says Morrigan, “Now you going to tell me what you’re offering or are you going to fuck off?”

The man holds up his hands in a placating motion.

“Fine,” he says, “We’re planning on sending in a team to distract the bandits or whatever they want to call themselves, while we get our forces into position. Decent sized group, with your six, there should be about twenty.”

“About?” asks Morrigan.

“Seventeen, if you want to be that precise,” says the man, You’ll go in about an hour beforehand acting like merchants selling weapons, distract them while we get set up around town.”
>>
>>38819938

“And when you attack?” asks Morrigan.

“You get into a nearby building and fly the American flag out a window,” says the man, “So we know not to shoot you.”

“Better not shoot at us, we’ll shoot back,” says Morrigan, to which the man snorts, “How much are you paying?”

“Five hundred a head,” says the man, “Plus equal shares of loot.”

“What’s a share?” asks Morrigan.

“Whatever you can carry,” says the man, “By your report they shouldn’t have that much shit anyway, nor all that good quality. We’re here because the government paid us, nothing more.”

“Five hundred a head and loot for waltzing in on a fucking caravan, with you an hour away” says Morrigan, “Sounds like…”

>>
>>38820265

Thats exactly what I said...
>>
>>38820281
You're either trolling or unbelievably dense.
>>
>>38820305
I'm not trolling, my point, which you've completely missed is that he gave no indication of the fact that we would be going with Koko, he only said 17 people all up, how the fuck am I meant to know how many people are with Koko or whether or not she's involved in this?
>>
>>38820359

Here's how you know how many people Koko has >>38820071 You read what the Quest author writes
>>
>>38820447
Fuck me you are retarded, I meant how are we meant to know Koko is coming along from the story posts and not Guide being condescending thinking we need to be taught basic maths.
>>
>>38820502
It wasn't a sure thing. Until he pointed out how many people Koko had with her. Then you apparently are one of the people who again stated, We should get her help! Or what the fuck ever.

That was Guide straight up saying. Koko is going. But people kept saying "Waaait but we should get her!" To which he replied >>38820125

Once again not so subtle hit that Koko and her gang is the extra man power. But.. you're still stuck apparently.
>>
>>38820578
>Then you apparently are one of the people who again stated
No I wasn't, I was the first person to suggest that Koko should come along, and then Guide said she already is coming and acted all condescending about how the number 17 magically means her entire crew is going along without any hints or talk of it in the post.
>>
>>38820578
Protip, asking a question is not telling you "X is doing Y" and Guide conveyed that extremely poorly.
>>
>>38820125
im actually very sure you cant add six to elven.

elves are too dumb.
>>
>>38820635
He wasn't being condescending. He was giving a hint that she was already coming.

How many people does Koko have? Ten Plus Chiquita.

That was a hint. It wasn't meant to be offensive.
>>
>>38820654
Yeah. Using a few brains cells to carry yourself the rest of the way is a bit difficult. Better if it's spelled out in it's entirety.

>>
>>38820725
Over post count. So it doesn't matter.

>>38820714
He counted them out in-case you didn't know. Chiquita typically wouldn't be included in her group. She works for Koko's brother.

So he was giving a "hint hint, nudge nudge Koko is coming!"

But you apparently can't read it as anything but hostile. The big bad words are out to get you.
>>
>>38820707
Bandit has slight break down. He's unaware of the slang term "Blanket."

“We’re in,” Morrigan finally says, “After we get it in writing. And half payment upfront.”

“Upfront?” says the man.

“Yeah, half now half later,” says Morrigan, “That’s how big operations work, I’m sure you didn’t just waltz out here because you got asked pretty please.”

The man laughs at that, nodding his head. “Fair enough,” he says.

“When are we leaving?” asks Morrigan.

“Tomorrow,” says the man, fishing into his pocket and pulling out a roll of money, tossing it to Morrigan, “The men don’t get to party the night before a mission.”

“Are you driving?” asks Morrigan.

“A little ways there,” he says, turning to leave, “Can’t get too close though or they’d hear us.”

“We travel by horse unless you’re going to give us a truck,” says Morrigan.

“You can work that out with your counterpart,” says the man, “I’m not sure when she’s leaving, but we’re leaving later and camping overnight before the attack.”

“My counterpart?” says Morrigan.

“Yeah, that pale arms dealer from the market,” he says with a grin, “She said you’d be great for this kind of thing.”

Morrigan chokes at that, her face turning red.

“Anyway, see you tomorrow,” says the man, leaving before Morrigan can say anything.

“Goddamnit!” she finally gets out as the rest of the crew comes out of the kitchen.

“What’s up?” asks Nem.

“We got a job, a well-paying one,” says Morrigan.

“What’s the problem then?” asks Nem.

“We’re working with Koko,” says Morrigan, turning to head upstairs, “I need a drink.”

It’s with a giggle from Nem that Morrigan disappears upstairs, somehow unhappy that you had a paying job.

A decent amount of endearment. Everyone likes money yeah?

Still have a bit of trouble on how Will instictively knew that looking at naked bodies was bad?
>>
>>38821931
it was probably beaten into him like everything else
>>
>>38821931
Will didn't forget everything.

He just repressed things, became more insular.

There weren't many occasions where being naked was important to him in the past few years, plus the lack of gender differences which is the main point of anti-nudity, simply meant he's fuzzy on the subject.
>>
>>38821931
Something left over from childhood that gleamed through?

I meant an actual teddy bear. If any girl is the "right size" it's Nem but I think she'd stab him.
>>
>>38822009
Aw man, who says Cath ain't the right size?
Blankets probably serve that purpose already, anyway. Soft, warm and practical.
>>
>>38822045
Right that's why I'm saying he won't know why he wants the teddy bear. The blanket provides more warmth and has more utility. But for some reason. He want's the tiny bear.
>>
>>38821173
Thanks, Guide.

This is a pretty slower paced quest. More character fluff and interactions than just hard numbers and lotsa fights.
