>I have a bit of cash, lets grab some Ice cream.

“Well, I have a bit of cash, so lets grab some Ice cream,” you say, realizing that it’d be wonderful in this heat.

“Thank you,” Kat says happily from the back seat.

Beth hums as she throws the car into gear and starts driving that way, “Awesome, the one near my house right?”

“Yeah, its the best around anyways, unless you found a better one..?” you ask doubting it, but staying on the safe side.

“No, and I doubt I will,” Beth gives a small shrug.

“Yeah, same,” you say before thinking about what you might want to do later. You could always check up on John but with Beth like she is… John would know what’s up. It’d be easier if she just mentioned it already, its not like John doesn’t already know shits going on.

Beth likely won’t do that without some prodding on your part, maybe even not then. You watch the houses pass by as you think.

You put it out of mind for now, theres no reason to bother her about it now. With a stretch, you bring yourself back to the present and find that Kat’s talking about the game you and her played last night.

Beth’s eyes are on the road but you can tell she’s itching to turn around, and talk animatedly. She gets her chance soon as she pulls into the Ice cream shop, you contribute some but mostly just enjoy relaxing for a bit. Finally after five or ten minutes the conversation dies down a little, and you take the chance to remind them where you are.

“You know, I don’t mind not getting ice cream,” you tell a white lie, the idea has grown on you more and more as you sat outside watching people eating it, “but we probably should head in before it gets busy.”

Beth glances at the shop, “Ah right, I got distracted.”

Kat smiles sheepishly, “It was my bad,” she says looking ready finally.

“I could tell,” you laugh as Beth shuts the car off and gets out, both you and Kat following after.

The three of you head in and you look at the menu, wondering exactly what to order, Kat looks over the menu for a bit before nodding. Beth seems to have already decided as well, and so you head up to the cashier.

She gives you and odd look, before glancing with envy at Beth’s toned form, “How can I help you?”

Kat excitedly orders, “I’d like a strawberry sunday, please,” her tail twitching happily.

“I guess I’ll take a vanilla scoop with chocolate syrup,” Beth says hardly guessing at all.

“Ah, Vanilla with chocolate please,” you say as you pull out your wallet.

“That’ll be ten dollars,” she smiles, surprising you with the low cost, “We have a special going on right now,” she explains preempting your question.

“That explains it,” you hand over the money and take a seat near a window waiting for her to make your order. Relaxing as you do in the cool air.

Beth sits across from you, Kat in the only other seat, “You know this feels surprisingly good.”

“Being in shape?” you ask, wanting to avoid mentioning the change outright, your eyes wander over her before settling back on her face.

“Yeah, easy to move and I feel like I have a lot of energy,” Beth confirms looking down at herself, before smiling and leaning in close, to whisper, “Plus the look she gave me made me feel smug even if I didn’t work for this.”

Kat lets out a short laugh, “Why not work for it then? When thats gone.”

“I’ve been trying you know,” Beth points out, as she relaxes into her chair.

“Well yeah, but to get that level of tone we’ll need to do more than run,” you point out, “But it might be best to get your endurance up for that first.”

“I know that,” Beth says defensively, “I wish it was a bit easier to get like this and stay here though.”

You chuckle, “You could literally do that, but then you’d be cheating.”

Beth chews on her lip for a bit thinking on it, your number is called then and you get up to get the tray. She seems to have come to a conclusion by the time you’re back.

“I might have to, not like I even want what I started doing this for anyways,” she says as you hand her ice cream.

Kat takes hers impatiently and starts to dig in, three bites later shes grimacing and holding her head as she inflicted a brain freeze upon herself.

“You really should slow down,” you comment, watching Kat.

“IF you really want to get in shape like that,” you say, gesturing at her with your spoon, “We can up our workouts, maybe add in some crossfit stuff.”

Beth thinks about it for a moment, before nodding, “I think I’d like that, honestly, if it feels this good to be in shape anyways.”

“It certainly feels better than being out of shape, but a big portion is eating right,” you say looking down at the ice cream, “Things like this wreck getting to looking like that.”

Kat frowns, “Once in a while is fine though,” she eating her ice cream a lot more slowly, twice shy of the brain freeze.

“Sure, but we haven’t exactly been eating junk once in a while lately,” you point out, “Its more like every other day, and using the running as a way to burn off the junk.”

“So then we just need to cut back,” Beth says, looking at her ice cream a bit more seriously, as if it’ll be the last she ever eats.

“Don’t look like that, once a week is fine as long as you don’t go overboard,” you chuckle.

The three of you fall into silence as you eat the now melting Ice cream, realizing it may be your last for a while.

Eventually your curiosity gets the best of you, “What did you want to begin with? Your wish I mean,” you ask as you take the last bite.

Beth looks a bit embarrassed, “To be honest, I really kind of wanted to be something like a Superhero, or something like that. It was kind of a vague idea,” she says quietly, “but after doing this it sort of made me realize it wouldn’t be like the games or comics.”

She sighs, “That’d it would probably be terrifying and not something I would actually want to do.”

“Sort of like fighting demons?” you ask, seeing where this may lead.

Beth shrugs, and makes a show of eating the last of her ice cream, “Yeah, something like that I guess. The weak ones are fine, because you can just deal with them… but things like today?” she sighs, “I’d rather not deal with.”

Kat nods in agreement, a frown on her face as she does so, “Or like the whole John thing…”

“I guess I can see that,” you say leaning forward and resting your chin in your hand, “It very quickly turns around from easy to intense.”

“Right? There’s hardly any in between it just jumps and when its not a game… well that’s scary,” Beth looks like she’s gotten a load off of her chest.

>So you’re ready to be done?
>How close to making a wish are you anyways?

“So you’re ready to be done?” you ask, realizing how little you actually know about Beth’s outlook on this whole thing.

“Well, no,” Beth admits, “I just would rather coast it out on easier things, as its actually pretty fun to be able to cut loose then.”

“Huh,” you say, not really having much else to, “So how close are you to making a wish? You’ve been doing it for a while now right?”

“I’ve got a decent amount of cores… for this one? Probably one or two more, I’d have to ask,” Beth explains, “I could cash out if I wanted to.”

Kat’s eyes go wide as she remembers something, “... I never went and grabbed my stash.”

“You think its still there?” you ask her, feeling a little guilty about that.

She chews on her lip for a moment, “Maybe? I split them in two incase one spot got found.”

“Are they close?” Beth has a pitying look on her face.

“Kinda, not too far from the park I met Alex at,” Kat frowns, “Not that there was a lot.”

>Do you want help?

“Do you want help?” You ask Kat, wanting to do just that.

Kat nods, “Yeah, I mean… yeah,” she seems to be debating over something or another.

“Well, lets go then,” Beth ends up saying after a moment of silence, each of you take your cups to the trash before heading to the car. Kat’s chewing on her lip, as she climbs in.

“You okay?” you ask her, climbing in the back with her.

Kat takes a second to respond, “Kinda..? I almost don’t want to go back for them.”

“Why’s that?” Beth asks, as she pulls out of the parlor and starts heading towards the park.

Your pet just shrugs, biting back a response as she glances towards you.

The car rides mostly silent from there on, until the car pulls into the parking lot.

“Do you think anyone’ll be waiting?” you ask remembering her tale of having to abandon her things once before.

“It’s been a week, so I doubt it,” Kat says with a frown, “Plus this isn’t where I stayed…”

Beth shuts the car off and all of you climb out, Kat gets her bearings before leading you away from the park, “I hid them over this way,” she explains, as she leads you towards the storm drain you fought the graphiti demon in.

She stops for a moment before climbing down in it and following it further down, about halfway between the two bridges that cross it theres a large pipe that she climbs into.

Beth looks skeptical as you climb in after, “You sure you left it here?” she asks, before climbing in.

“Yeah, theres a nook just up here,” Kat says quietly, her voice barely echoing through the tube.

Beth grumbles a bit at this, but doesn’t voice anything else.

You follow Kat until she stops feels around for something, its hard to see at this point from the light fading out, so you pull out your phone giving her a bit of light.

Theres a bundle sitting on a ledge under what looks to be a closed up drain from the street above. Likely due to construction work, Kat hesitantly unwraps the bundle; revealing three cores.

She lets out a sigh of relief, before wrapping the tattered cloth back up, “I really didn’t expect to find them still here.”

You ruffle her hair, quickly devolving to just scratching her ears, “Where’s the next then?”

“Probably gone… I put it in an old birds nest in the tree across from the exit of this,” she gestures towards where you entered at, and starts heading towards it.

“Why there..?” you ask curious, “Strong winds could knock it down.”

“.. I had planned to get it shortly, but things happened,” she explains hesitantly.

“Ah,” you shield your eyes from the now bright sun.

“Can’t hurt to check,” Beth says happily climbing out of the tube.

Kat nods as she makes her way across and out, before climbing half way up the tree. She frowns and shakes her head before making her way back down, recovering just three cores.

“It’s better than I expected at least…” Kat says after a moment.

Kat smiles, “Yeah, that will be nice, not having to worry about whether someone’s found it,” she holds the bundle tight.

“It does make this a lot less stressful I imagine,” Beth comments as you all make your way back to the vehicle.

Your pet hums, “Probably… its a lot less stressful in general.”

“I bet,” Beth smiles, “you’ve become a bit less timid lately.”

Kat glances towards you, “Well… there’s reason’s for that.”

Beth follows her gaze, “You don’t say?” there’s a bit of an annoyed tone there but it dies off by the end.

“What is your wish anyways?” You ask Kat, realizing its a topic you never touched before.

Kat bites her lip as she watches you, “Well it was to have a loving family, and warm home.”

“And now?” you ask, feeling really good that you’ve managed to help grant her wish.

“... that it never goes away,” Kat admits quietly, as she grasps your hand.

You’re almost speechless as she says this, making you realize exactly how much you’ve changed her life; she’s gone from living under bridges, or in orphanages to sleeping in a bed with someone who cares for her.

It really puts into perspective just how much her life must have changed in the last week… and by extension your own.

“You don’t need to worry about that,” you give her a reassuring smile, “It won’t change.”

“It could though!” Kat protests, indignantly, “It could very quickly change…”

You’re silent for a moment letting her calm down, “Kat surely by now you’ve seen enough to realize you can count on us… my father at this point is jumping at the chance to proclaim another daughter.”

“My mother is more than willing to adopt you,” you continue on, “They already consider you part of the family and you can count on them.”

Kat bites her lip, “... still though I don’t want to lose it.”

She returns the hug and latches onto you tightly, she eventually lets go with a happy sigh.

Beth lets out an awkward cough almost as if to remind you she’s still there, “Now that this is taken care of… what do you want to do? I’ve got a while before my times up.”

>Hunt a demon, something easy.

“Lets go hit something easy,” you say, glancing around to see if there’s not anything nearby.

“Something easy?” Beth asks as you lead the other two.

“A demon, might as well and its not like your change will hinder you at all,” you point out, “Plus it’ll get rid of that bad taste from the last demon.”

“I’m okay with it,” Kat shifts the bundle she’s carrying, “Since… well yeah.”

Beth shrugs, “Alright sure, it’ll be fun I suppose.”

“Awesome I’ll get to looking,” you say while focusing on trying to find a nightmare, it takes a while as you can’t seem to get into the proper mindset; not to mention a lot of them seem to have been cleared out.

As you’re about to give up you spot one against the fence to the water park, you frown as you realize just how far you’ve gone. You look back to see Beth and Kat following behind with concerned looks.

“Found one,” you explain, “It looks like it should be weaker… not to mention I didn’t see it last time we were here.”

Beth’s cheeks redden as she remembers that night, “Can we get to it without tickets?”

“It’s along the fence so yeah,” you nod, gesturing at it.

Kat frowns, “What about the people in the parking lot? They can see us, and if we just suddenly disappear…”

>They’ll probably just think they were imagining things.

“They’ll probably just think they were imagining things,” you say nonchalantly, as you make your way towards the nightmare.

Kat frowns but follows after, Beth shortly after as she glances around the half full parking lot.

You all stop just before for the nightmare, glancing about the lot real quick before entering, you bring your hand up to block the bright sun as you take in the Nightmare. All of you are standing on a small island next to a shack with seemingly endless ocean around you.

“... it looks just like an ideal vacation spot,” Beth comments wistfully taking in the warm sight.

“No kidding,” you say as you take a second look at the shack behind you, its a small ordeal no larger than one room. It looks almost as if it’d fall over if you pushed too hard on it. The door is shut, though you can see the shape of someone inside through the cracks in the boards.

“... its a shame,” Kat sounds almost sad as she looks around.

“Yeah,” Beth agrees as she transforms, letting you see just how muscular she’s gotten from the change.

”You should tell her that her shadow might be able to keep that change for her,” Shadow Alex speaks up, ”Then we could experience those abs, it’d be win win.”

‘That’s right… you did mention that a while ago didn’t you?’ you think as you say, “Shield of glass, Spear of light; Break now, mirror, aid my fight!”

Your clothes fragment, with the familiar sound of breaking glass, and launch outwards. The darkened fragments hover in the area reflecting light in interesting ways before returning to your body, leaving you in your cargo pants, and blouse; the book is last as it from before you. Your transformation completes as you take the book.

You head to the door, knocking on it and waiting a moment.

“What are you doing..?” Beth asks you, shaking her head.

“It’s not like whatever's in there won’t know we’re here anyways,” you point out, before opening the door when nothing happens. The inside surprises you, as its larger than you expected and actually furnished.

Inside there’s a comfortable looking bed, with a hammock strung between its posts, a large couch across from a window that shows the ocean. The room has a plush rug that covers most of the open floor and in the corner is a mound of pillows where a relaxed woman with bizarre proportions lay.

Your eyes tell you that this is the demon, she motions to you then the room and you hear Beth respond behind you, “I guess that’s true.”

Question for anons here: How do demons get their powers? As in how do they power their entire realm. If it's like our magical generator, could we go to the effort of collecting passive demons and have them chill in another SA room?
>>
>Relax a bit

You shrug and take a seat on the couch, holding your book tightly ready to attack given a reason to do so, “Yo this demon seems pretty chill,” you say to Beth who’s looking you like you’re crazy.

Kat won’t even leave the doorway, “Let’s just attack it and get it over with,” she pleads.

“What are you doing Alex..?” Beth asks, “Seriously.”

“Take a look around, its a prime time vacation spot, and the demon has yet to attack us,” you point out, sinking into the comfortable couch, “Why not spend a moment to enjoy this?”

“Because we’re in a nightmare,” Beth’s says as if that’s more than enough.

“Look its relatively peaceful,” you gesture to the relaxed demon, and realize why her proportions feel off. Her body is ever so slightly off, neck too long, arms longer than they should, and shoulders wider than normal.

“So?” Beth asks, “This is a pretty cut and dry thing, we kill demons, thats a demon.”

You smile, “At least let me ask it some questions and see if it responds.”

With a sigh Beth gives in, “Fine but I’m not relaxing and if it does anything odd I’m killing it.”

“That’s fine,” you say, glancing at Kat who’s getting antsy, “It’ll be fine, don’t worry Kat.”

She shakes her head as she holds onto her wand tightly.

You watch her for a moment, your smile fading before deciding to get this over with.

“Can you even speak?” you ask, wondering if this will be a waste of time.

It doesn’t respond, instead gesturing for Beth and Kat to join you in relaxing. Beth almost attacks at its movement, but stops when she realizes it’s just gesturing. Kat ends up walking outside, staying where she can see you.

“What is it that you want?” you ask, feeling a bit awkward at the lack of a response.

The demon points at you, and then Beth, though it doesn’t speak.

Beth hair rises on end, “Alex, please lets just kill it.”

“Fine,” Beth looks expectantly at you, “Ask then.”

“What is it that you do?” you ask, realizing you really don’t want to get off of this couch. That it’d be nice to stay here and escape from the world.

The demon stares at you, silent as its always been. You hardly can muster the will to get up, and fulfill your promise to Beth.

A metal pillar obscures your visions from the demon just long enough to break you from the trance you had entered.

The metal pillar slams into the demons, punching it through the wall and out onto the beach as it rolls away. It nearly makes it to the water before you see a fireball hit it in the face, rocking its head back.

You quickly get off of the couch and shake that feeling from your head.

”Finally!” Shadow Alex says with relief, ”Once you sat on the couch things started getting weird, and you didn’t seem to hear me.”

‘Well, I guess I found out what it did,’ you think as you consider what to do next.

It scrambles to its feet glaring daggers your way, you feel it channel magic but can’t tell what's happening until a group of glowing pillows lift frown the floor and launch your way.

It’s easy to avoid, your magic taking its toll on the demon. Kat runs in and wave makes a cone of fire that engulfs the demon.

Beth jumps out the hole she made and punches the sand, sending a way of metal spikes that cut through the demon easily.

It’s on its last legs, as it makes a run for the water; not even slowed by the holes Beth’s spikes have made.

You channel magic, feeling the flow and taking just enough to do what you want, and use the darkness in the demons shadow to create a hell made of spikes. The demon trips and rolls as the spikes fade.

A fireball explodes on it, just as it tries to get back up, causing it to collapse into itself leaving behind a teal colored core.

You head out of the shack and watch as the Nightmare starts to collapse on itself, Kat picks up the core as Beth frowns at you, “Let’s not do that again, imagine if you were alone!” she chides.

“Even with us here, you shouldn’t do something like that,” Kat protests.

“Yeah, but don’t you want to know what’s going on? Or at least to learn more about demons and why they do this shit?” You ask, as your curiosity burns, “Sure demons are bad and try to attack us, but what if we could talk one into being peaceful…”

Beth shakes her head, “Alex please, she nearly... beat you and it would have been your own fault.”

You rub the back of your head and glance at the quickly collapsing nightmare; something you take a sign to return to normal. Letting your outfit explode off of you, before returning your cut off shorts and tank top.
