You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

Things started going back to normal after you helped increase security in the fortress. You continued training with the others, even doing a little side training with Galadriel, and now your first month here has come to an end. It won't be long until you have to start going on patrol with the others.

You're now sitting in the Knight-Captain's office. Four sheets of paper sit in front of you, each with a time frame and a list of names. Captain Laurentius sits behind his desk, explaining a few things about your new duties and what's expected of you.

"...And so, from now on training will be done on your time, rather than by a strict schedule." He explains. "However, you must meet your patrol group in the grand hall at the written time. Once you go out on patrol, you will be gone for a few hours so make sure you have everything you need with you before leaving with them. Your squadmates will show you the ropes, so listen to them when they offer you advice."

Laurentius pulls out a pen and sets it on the desk in front of you. "Now, these sheets I have lined up here are the rosters for all the available squads I have at the moment. Please choose one and sign your name in an open spot."

You skim through the rosters, looking for any familiar names. As luck would have it, you find quite a few. Thinking things over for a bit, you grab a pen sitting on the Knight-Captain's desk and sign your name on one of them.

You decide to sign up for the night patrol. You figure it'll be a good way to meet new people.

The knight-captain waits for you to finish signing, then takes the papers and stashes them away. "The night patrol, eh? I was almost certain you'd sign up for one of the other patrols. Well, if you're going to be a part of the night patrol, there's a few things I should tell. First off, remember to get some sleep earlier in the day. You'll be out there for most of the night, so you need to get some rest before then. Second, stay close to your squad. The same applies to the daytime patrols, but it's especially important at night, when it's easy to get separated in the dark. Lastly, because you'll be out for most of the night, the normal curfew does not apply to you. You patrol will begin around 11 at night, about an hour after curfew, so the night guard won't bother you if there's anything you need to do after curfew before going on patrol. Do you have any questions?"

You shake your head. "No sir."

"Very well, then you are free to go. Your patrol starts tomorrow night, be prepared and get some rest before then."

You nod, and exit the knight-captain's office. Tomorrow is your first patrol, and it'll be late at night. It is currently 2 in the afternoon, dinner won't be until later today. You have no set in stone training schedule anymore, so now it's you choice whether you want to train or do something else today.

You decide to head back to your room and do some reading. Since you don't have a set in stone training schedule anymore, you might as well take it easy. And besides, you'll probably have to return those books eventually, so you should read them before you have to take them back.

Back in your room, you set your stuff down and grab the three books you borrowed from the tower library. Sitting down on the bed, you get comfortable and start by reading

You decide to read "Heroes of the Crusades". Who knows, it might have some useful info about the old champions that you could use.

The book talks about some of the most influential people from the Crusades, from the first all the way to the twenty-eighth crusade. Champions of Galadriel have their own special section, but it also talks about other people who played a big part in the crusades. Surprisingly, you even see Laurentius's name in here.

For now though, you're more interested in learning about the old champions, so you flip through the chapters dedicated to them. The first one, who served in the second crusade, was apparently a very famous hero from the first one. It seems he actually almost made it to Malaphas's doorstep, but then one of the demon lords finally killed him. The name of the demon lord was Alastor, which you believe Galadriel said was the name of the Lord of Wrath.
>>
>>38859664
The rest of the champions range from stereotypical heroes to some rather unheroic figures. Some of them are familiar to you, and you recognize them as people you saw in your dreams before. It seems the one you first saw who was too scared to run was actually a very famous tourney fighter who earned the right to wield Galadriel after winning a grand tourney held by Galloway. Sadly, it seems he couldn't handle the real deal, and he was killed in one of the first battles of the eighth crusade. Another one, the champion you saw choke to death, was actually the son of the first champion. People had high hopes for him, but he wasn't nearly as skilled as his father and quite greedy to boot. It says he finally died while he was a guest at the king of Iseria's castle, where he choked to death. The last one that you recognize was the man who was shot by his own allies. Apparently he was actually doing a pretty good job compared tot he last two, but then he was shot in the back by one of his archers. The archer in question was interrogated, but killed himself before they could learn if anybody had paid him to do it.

From what you're reading, the rest of the champions died in ways that ranged from "Died gloriously in battle" to "poisoned shortly after being named champion". The only exception being Andras, who never actually died. Actually, Andras has the second largest chapter out of them, second only to the first one.

"Andras, the 27th champion, led the 28th crusade against the Forsaken Lands. Many legends surround this fallen hero and his fall from grace. Once lauded as the mightiest champion the world had seen yet, Andras would eventually betray humanity and become a lesser demon in service to Malaphas, the very being he once swore to destroy."
>>
>>38859690
The chapter continues to list some of the great accomplishments Andras made before betraying the crusaders, but there's nothing in here that really explains why he turned.

As you read more about the old champions, you can feel a growing sense of melancholy coming from Galadriel. You suppose the book must be opening some old wounds of hers.

You feel a little bad for Galadriel, but this sort of information might help you stay alive, so you ask her a few questions.

'Galadriel? If you don't mind, I wanted to ask you something.'

Galadriel shakes herself back to attention, and you can feel her try to hide her sad feeling from earlier. 'Ah, yes? What did you want to know?'

You flip back to the chapter on the first champion, a man named Asher. 'What can you tell me about this guy? What exactly made him so special, besides being a hero from the first crusade? Were the demons just not ready?'

Galadriel seems to observe the chapter for a moment. 'Asher was...He was a very unique person.' She says, that sense of sadness starting to show again. 'He was a captain amongst the mortal crusader's ranks during the first war. I'd seen him during the first crusade, though at the time I payed him little mind. Too focused on my own battles. His home had been captured during the initial invasion, and many people he cared for were either killed or captured. I believe that may have been why he joined in the first place. After the first crusade ended and I sealed myself within my blade, the mortal crusaders decided that my blade should be given to the best amongst them. I remember they put it to vote, and it was unanimous that Asher was the most worthy.'

'You mean you didn't have them all come up and try to lift the blade as usual?'

'No, not then at least. From the moment he grabbed the handle of my blade, I knew that he was worthy. I saw into his mind, learned what kind of person he was, and though he was not perfect, he may have been the closest I've seen to date.'
>>
>>38861488
'Sounds like you thought a lot of him.'

'You would as well had you met him. Asher was a righteous man, always putting himself before others. He truly believed it was his sacred duty to free the Forsaken Lands and all the mortals still trapped within. I've never seen a man more dedicated to the cause before or since.'

'So then what happened to him?'

'He died...After nearly making it to the black fortress of Malaphas, he was slain in battle by Alastor, the lord of wrath. He died an honorable death, even managing to wound Alastor before finally succumbing to his wounds.'

Seeing that this is a very sore topic for Galadriel, you switch to your other question. 'I'm sorry, he sounds like he was a good person. What about Andras though? It says here that a lot of people thought he was as strong as Asher, so what changed?'

'Andras changed.' Galadriel replies, a hint of anger in her voice. 'Andras drew my sword in a ceremony much like the one you saw before he attacked. At the time, he seemed like a bold warrior who blessed with great strength. From my insight into his mind, I could see that he was after glory, but after 26 failures I was desperate, and it seemed he was strong enough to see the task through. I should have never been so hasty.'
>>
>>38861546
'What exactly was so bad about him? What made him betray the crusaders?'

'Andras was a powerful warrior, but he was also very proud. Andras also proved over time to be a cruel man, who's allies feared him almost as much as the demons they were fighting. I remember one occasion where a crusader fled the battle out of fear, and Andras specifically hunted him down when the battle was over, then butchered the poor fool and left what was left of his body hanging in the main camps as a warning to anyone else who would try to flee. That very same night, he came to me and demanded I bestow more of my powers to him for the next coming battle. I refused, for I did not believe he was ready for more, and after such a brutal display I was reluctant to trust him with more of my power. Andras was enraged, and tried to force it from me, just as I'd warned him and every other champion not to do. The next battle, as punishment, I willed my blade to be useless. No matter how hard he tried, my blade would not cut anything. He confronted me after the battle, and finally I had had enough, and declared that he was no longer worthy of wielding my blade. I could not fully sever the link between us, so he could still wield my sword, but I would not cut for him any more.'

'So that's why he turned then?'

'Yes. One night, after I renounced his status as champion, he decided that if I would not grant him power, then he would seek it somewhere else.'

So that's why Andras betrayed the crusaders. Listening to Galadriel recount what happened, it sounds like Andras was a pretty bad guy even before he turned. You think back to your first encounter with him, and how he nearly killed you trying to take back Galadriel by force. You really hope you never run into him again.

You're tired, and this seems to be a sore topic for Galadriel, so you decide that's enough learning for now.

'Thanks for answering, Galadriel. I'm sorry for bringing up a sore topic.'

'No, not at all. These are things you have a right to know as the one protecting my blade. Do not hesitate to ask these sort of questions if you have them.'

'Alright, I'll keep that in mind.' You respond, setting the sword down next to your bed and lying down. You'll be going on patrol at night starting tomorrow, so you should try and get adjusted to the new sleep schedule.

-----
The rest of the day goes by with little of note happening. You tell everyone at lunch that you've signed up for the night patrol, who joke about you "avoiding" their patrol squads. Little else of note happens the next day either, as you spend a good portion of the day sleeping in preparation for your patrol.

Finally, it's almost an hour until you need to meet everyone in your squad in the grand hall. Everyone besides the night watch is in their rooms asleep by now, so you just spend the last hour getting ready to go. As you do, your eyes wander over to the shield your father gave you before you left Morsland. Admittedly, you'd been neglecting it since coming here, and for a moment you wonder if you should take it with you on patrol.

You're father did give it to you, and a shield could be pretty useful, so you decide to take it with you. Once again your struck by how well made it is, clearly your father put a lot of work into this when he made it a long time ago. As you grab the shield, you notice the great helm you'd almost forgotten about sitting on the armor rack as well. You might not be wearing chain mail anymore, but the helm wouldn't look too strange worn with the enchanted clothing you're wearing, so you put it on as well. Now with all of your gear now gathered, you head for the grand hall to meet the rest of your squad.

There must be about 10 people here, all of which are unfamiliar to you. You see a few carrying bows and some others carrying everything from spears to axes. Two people in particular, however, stand out. The first of which is a man in heavy steel armor, carrying a shield in one hand and a mace in the other. That alone wouldn't be enough to make hims stand out though, what makes him stand out is the fact that he's absolutely HUGE. The man stands probably around seven feet tall, towering over everyone else here. Is it even possible for a normal person to be this big?

The other that stand out is a dwarf, dressed in what looks like normal clothes with a white traveler's cloak and a cap adorned with a feather. Rather than carrying a weapon, he seems to be carrying a lute, and doesn't seem to be carrying a actual weapon of any sort.

The both of them would stand out in any normal situation, but the reason you notice them is because both of them notice your arrival and approach you, the dwarf looking up at you while the large man in steel armor towers above you.

"Ah, you must be Siegfried, correct? The captain told us you'd be joining us, glad to have you aboard!" The dwarf says with a friendly smile.

>"Thank you sir. Do you know where we're going on patrol?"

You nod. "Thank you sir. Yes, I'm Siegfried, I'll be joining this squad for the night patrol starting today. And who are you two, if you don't mind me asking?"

The dwarf snaps. "Ah! Forgive me, I forgot to introduce myself." He takes a short bow. "My name is Logain, former minstrel and current second in command of this squad. And this here is Galmar, the sergent in charge of this squad."

The large man in plate armor nods. "Well met." He says in a deep voice.

"Thank you sir." You respond. "Now, is there anything I should know before we go on patrol? Things to expect, places we'll be going, anything?"

Logain is the one to answer. "Well, our patrol route usually heads north, and stops at a town called Llynn, which lies close to the border. We like to check in with them from time to time, just to make sure everything is fine."

Logain nods. "Yes, sadly. There have been a few kidnappings there before, though we do all we can to prevent that from happening. Such risks are expected when you live this close to the border."

You nod. "Alright. Speaking of which, how often do you actually run into demons while on patrol?"

"Not very often. Maybe once or twice a month we'll find one scurrying around, but they're usually small fry who are easy to deal with."

The giant knight, Galmar, nods. "You have nothing to fear, just stay close to the rest of the squad and you'll be fine."

With that said, it seems it's time to go, as they both head to the front of the group and lead them outside. You fall in with the others and follow them out to the stables, where everyone saddles up and rides out.

Not much is said for the rest of the night. You and the rest of your squad ride north, getting pretty close to the border. The squad stops to take a break from time to time, before saddling up and riding out again. Everyone keeps a watchful eye out for anything suspicious, stopping from time to time when someone hears something, though so far the only thing you've encountered is squirrels and a few birds.

The patrol is long and boring, though in all honesty, you should probably be glad that it's been uneventful.

Finally, the patrol comes up to a small town. Wooden walls surround the town, providing a little defense against the local wildlife and demons should they attack, though you doubt such a basic wall would keep them out for very long.

"Here we, the town of Llynn." Logain announces. "Now, we shall head inside and speak with the locals, make sure everything is alright. Feel free to stay here and rest up while we do so."

Tired from all the riding, you decide to do just that, dismounting your horse and sitting down under one of the trees. Most of the others in your squad do the same, waiting for Galmar and Logain to return.

For a moment, you consider speaking with one of your squadmates to pass the time, but as you stand to do so, you hear something rustle close by. You noticed because it was close, but the others seem to be too far or too preoccupied to notice.

Probably just another Aureus damned squirrel, like the ones that brought the squad to a halt a few time earlier. Still...

>Call out to the others, go investigate
>Investigate yourself. If it is a squirrel, it's probably not worth bothering the squad over
>Ignore it. Your tired, and there's no point in investigating every little thing that makes a noise out here.

We are on patrol, it is our job to be paranoid.

Even if it is nothing more then a squirrel, or racoon.
>>
>>38864433
Well, maybe it is just a squirrel, but you still should inform your squad just to be safe.

"Hey, guys." You call out, grabbing their attention. "I heard something coming from over here."

The others get up, some with a groan, and go with you to investigate. You all head into the woods, towards the source of the sound. Another rustling, this time much closer. Everyone draws their weapon, the air growing tense, and then...

...Out flies a raven from the brush, landing in a nearby tree and staring down at everyone. It lets out a shrill squawk.

"Man, I KNEW it was nothing." Someone says, sheathing his weapon. "C'mon, lets head back, there's nothing out here.

Sighing, you follow after them. You can't believe you got all worked up over a damn bird of all things. Still, for some reason you feel like your missing something. You shrug it off, you're done being paranoid for now.

Shortly after you return, Logain and Galmar come back from town. Everyone gets up from where they're sitting and gathers around them, you included.

"Everything checks out." Logain says. "For the most part, everything seems to be alright here."

"'For the most part?'" One of your squadmates asks.

Galmar nods. "Nothing has happened recently, at least. One of the villager's daughters is still missing, but there's nothing we can do about that."

Logain nods in agreement. "Aye. The mother believes she was kidnapped by demons, but we don't know for sure. If she was, then I'm afraid there's not much we can do about it anyways except keep an eye out. As sad as it is to say, if she was kidnapped then she's probably already been whisked away to a farm in the Forsaken Lands already."

Wait, did he say farms? Is that what the demons do with people they kidnap?

Uh, I can't possibly imagine that we already forgot that the Doppelganger specifically mentioned them using a raven familiar to run errands. Maybe if we had to make the leap in logic ourselves, sure, but we were actually told outright what kind of animal they were using.

>You can shoot it if you want.
Better safe than sorry, I'd say. If we're the kind of guy who goes around poking everyone with our gauntlet to make sure they're not evil infiltrators, I figure this level of caution is in our wheelhouse.

We were also told they speak in actual words, though, so maybe double-check with Galadriel first to see if she knows if they ALWAYS speak in actual words. Being able to squawk might exonerate it and keep us from seeming unnecessarily triggerhappy.
>>
>>38865117

>>

Your old guard instincts kick in again, and before you know it you're already trying to learn more.

"Farms, is that where demons take people after kidnapping them?"

Logain nods. "Aye, though it's not quite the sort of farm your thinking of. Demons survive off the negative emotions of mortals, so they sometimes kidnap them and bring them back with them. The farms are...not pleasant. They do everything in their power to make their captives miserable, so that they can feed off of that emotion. It's sick, but there's nothing we can do about it short of invading."

Captured and taken to be tormented by demons. You can't imagine how terrible that must be. You push further, asking question about the person who was kidnapped.

"When did she disappear? Do they mention where they last saw her?"

"The mother said she went missing about two months ago. Apparently she left without telling her parents, though someone saw her heading into the woods the day she went missing."

"Did they mention which way they saw her go?"

Galmar points to the east. "They said she was heading east. The people who saw her were worried, but they thought her mother gave her permission to go."

You ask a few more questions, trying to piece together as much as you can. After a while the others start to ask questions themselves, helping you get all the information together. It seems the mother left to go shopping one afternoon, leaving her 17 year old daughter home. When she came back, her daughter was gone, and never came back that night. One of the villagers saw her head into the woods carrying a basket, making them think she was going to pick berries. No one saw her after that, and a group of villagers went into the woods to look for her, but found nothing. She hasn't been seen since.

"...And that's about all we know." Logain says with a sigh. "Not much we can do about it though, like I said."

You're not so sure about that, but right now it's too dark to investigate more, and you're on patrol right now, so you decide to let it go for now. However, you do get Logain to tell you where the mother lives inside the town, in case you decide to come back and ask her more questions later.

"Alright, now if if there aren't any more questions, we need to get going. We've got a long ride back to the tower ahead of us."

You and the other obey, and start getting mounted up again. As you do, however, you notice the raven from before is sitting on a high tree branch, staring at you.

'Galadriel?' You ask, remembering your talk with the doppelganger. 'Didn't the doppelganger say they got their orders from a raven familiar?'

'Yes.' Galadriel says. 'Though there's no way of know if that's the one in question, if that's what you mean.'

'Well demons burn when you touch them, right? Can't I just throw a net at it and see if it starts burning?'

'No. Familiars are magical creatures, but they are not demons. My blade is just as effective against them as anything else, but it will not burn a familiar.'

The raven notices you staring back at it and squawks. You could try to shoot it if you wanted.

It prevents samefagging during a lightning round. Or at least, that's the explanation I've seen from other quests. Is there a different way I should do tie breakers?

Quickly, you shift Galadriel into a net and toss it at the raven. The raven notices what you're doing too late, and is caught in the net, plummeting back down to you. It chirps and squawks angrily, biting at the links in the net.

Well, now you've caught it, but now what?

The window for barring exact duplicate posts is ~5 minutes, IIRC. But hey, whatever you feel works.

>>38866102
>Take it with you. Maybe someone can identify a familiar back at the tower?
Worst case scenario we're the weirdo who slaps a wild bird down on the counter, but it's worth it for the possibility of getting some intel.

>>38866115
This is a solid suggestion.
>>
>>38866158
Eh, five minutes sounds good. I'll do that from now on.

Also, writing.
>>
>>38866191
Can we ask the sword if we can bind the bird to our will, if it isn't a familiar?
You would think she would have the power, or magic would exist since it seem a waste to just throw it away if its a normal raven.
>>
Holy shit The earlier roll was for san loss.
>>
>>38866102
Maybe you're being crazy, but then again this could be a good chance to gain more intel if you're right, so you wrap the raven up further in Galadriel's net, narrowly dodging it's angry pecks, and stuff it inside your backpack for safe keeping. Now it not only can't escape, but can't see anything either.

"Siegfried, what's taking you so long?" Logain asks. You look up and notice the others are already starting to leave.

"Nothing. Sorry sir." You apologize, riding after them. You make a mental note to ask around the tower for someone who knows about familiars. With any luck, it'll turn out you're right and not just being crazy.
>>
>>38866237

>>
>>38866342
Kind of torn between hoping it's an enemy familiar so we might get some information about enemy operations/the missing villager/something else and hoping it isn't so grumpy wiseass counterespionage bird is a possibility.

Thanks for running.

That said, I know a lot of previous quests have tended to get bogged down in hypervigilance over perceived mystery elements/threats/investigation threads/etc. Don't feel weird about telling us if we start going too far overboard into tinfoil hat territory. A little idle speculation is fun, but I'd imagine it would get a little tiring if it reaches a point where that's all we do.

For questions, on the subject of >>38865010 are you going to be treating this kind of stuff like plot arcs, or do you plan on having less of a general structure?

>>38866561
>>38866342
Like this anon said, be sure to rein us in if our speculation/paranoia goes into stupid levels.
>>
>>38866561
I haven't really thought about that much. I'll probably end up handling it like a plot arc of sorts.
>>38866600
I will, but it hasn't hit that point yet though. I wouldn't have said it was a raven if I didn't want this sort of reaction.
