You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Currently, you were back in Colonel Kelsey's office, where both Kelsey and Anderson were debriefing you over your covert op at IIS.

"Well, it wasn't completely perfect, but it got the job done." Anderson grunts as he reads the after action reports. "Still, I would have preferred it to be completely silent."

"Any blowback?" Kelsey asks cautiously.

"Nah, they have no clue who hit them." Anderson shakes his head. "Of course, we're feeding them false info that the Russians are most likely behind it. My guys stole a wide swath of data to mask what we were really looking for."

"And how's the the decryption going?: You ask.

"Oh, we already decrypted the files." Anderson shrugs.

"What?" You blink.

"What?" Kelsey blinks.

"Yeah, little known fact, we actually cracked most of the Japanese encryptions months ago." Anderson grins. "The Japanese are an incredibly odd folk. Years ahead in some aspects, completely backwards in others. Have some of the most advanced computers in the world, but piss poor methods of actually protecting them."

"And you found something?" Kelsey asks.

"Heh, we found EVERYTHING." Anderson grins. "Lists of undercover operatives, payment records, black budgets, all the rope we need to hang Takakura and and then some!"

"The question is, what do we do with all of this? Kelsey narrows his eyes.

"Well, if you ask me, we use this to roll up the entire organization ourselves. No fuss, no international scandal. But that's my opinion." Anderson shrugs.

"Maybe we should just pass this on to the Emperor." Kelsey suggests. "I'm sure he's in a better position to handle something as big as this."

"We'd basically have to admit that we spied on him, though." Anderson glowers.

"But doesn't everybody spy on each other anyways?" You add.

"Yeah, but we don't like admitting it."

I think that this is better, since there's less political fallout if something goes wrong, and this way the Emperor consolidates his internal position against his naysayers much more effectively.

It's more win-win long term despite Anderson being antsy about it.

"We'll bring this evidence to the Emperor." You say grimly.

"Well, that settles it." Kelsey grunts. "We'll arrange an audience with the Emperor. Anderson, I suggest you get your people out of the country in the meantime."

"Don't have to tell me twice." Anderson gets up from his seat and slides a disk to you. "I hope you know what you're doing."

"I hope I do to." You respond.

"Well, while we handle that in the meantime, I've got some more news from the home front." Kelsey says as he eyes Anderson silently exiting.

"Good news, I hope."

"Well, it's a bit mixed." Kelsey laughs lightly. "Seems like Europe is heating is up. Apparently Laika's mission got cut a bit short since they accelerated Frank Bishop's training and shipped him out a bit earlier than expected."

"Is it bad?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Oh no, just our two favorite Germans causing trouble in Eastern Europe." Kelsey smirks. "Taking back old Polish lands. I hear they're going to take Minsk by the end of the week."

"Good to hear." You nod, making a note to yourself to try and catch up with Hessler and Elsa sometime. "So what's the problem?"

"Well, we just need to decide what to do with Laika." Kelsey says. "Now that Bishop is gone, her mission is technically over and she can return to Japan right now if we wanted to. But, I can pull a few strings and extend her stay a couple more days. With all those test and recon flights she pulls, that girl needs a damn break once in while, you know?"

You think about it for a second. The war effort here always needed pilots of Laika's skill. Then again, this as a good opportunity for her to get further familiarized with the homefront, and at least Rex was still out there keeping an eye on her.

"Yeah, Laika can spend a few more days in the States. We can probably shack her up with my folks in the meantime." You say, wondering whether Dad would let her fly his old Phantom.

You almost dread the image that you're cooking up in your mind right now. Hopefully Dad won't make the mistake of letting her take the controls.

"Okay, so on to the important part. Talking to the Emperor..."

"We're going to need all hands on deck for this one." Kelsey sighs. "Perhaps you should talk to Jetstream and Euclid first about this. I'll let you know when I get clearance to enter the Royal Palace."

"Thanks." You nod and exit Kelsey's office. Jetstream isn't hard to find. She's on the firing range with Euclid, practicing their marksmanship. Euclid has her signature bow, taking out targets that at distances normally reserved for tank cannons, while Jetstream practices firing her handgun with one arm, no doubt since she's almost always holding her katana in the other. You note she swaps hands after every mag. That took dedication, teaching oneself to be ambidextrous.

"Hey, Jetstream, do you have a minute?" You ask as she finishes her latest volley.

"Ah, Captain, what brings you here today?" Jetstream puts her handgun down and turns to you. You notice Euclid interrupting her shot to see what's going on. "Are you here to practice?"

"Yeah, a bit." You nod. "Been getting a bit rusty anyways."

"Well, you are welcome to join us!" Jetstream grins.

After getting clearance from the rangemaster, you take out your standard issue M9 pistol and a few spare magazines. Unlike most other SFs, you didn't really feel the need to take a nonstandard sidearm. In your line of work you weren't going to be doing much shooting with it anyways.

Your first round of shooting is pretty decent, getting all of your shots near the center. However, you wryly note that Jetstream was better at shooting with hand than you could with both.

"You don't do much shooting, do you, Captain." Jetstream chuckles as you compare your targets.

"I get the feeling you do a little too much." You fire back playfully. "Let me guess, your parents taught you to shoot before you could."

"Oh, of course not!" Jetstream laughs. "They taught me how to use a sword, first!"

"Ah, should have figured." You laugh along with her. "Your family really are all warriors, are they?"

"Of course. We've been the Emperor's swords for centuries." Jetstream smiles nostalgically. "It's our fate to live, and die, on the battlefield for our Emperor and Japan."

"Though, something tells me you're not here just for small talk." Jetstream walks in closer. "What's going on?"

"Ah, well..." You had to get to this eventually. "We found our evidence against Takakura. The guy is guilty as hell."

"Ah... that is a shame." Jetstream shakes her head sadly, but you notice a hint of fury in her eyes. "What do you intend to do."

"Well, I was thinking we take this straight to the Emperor. What do you think?"

"Well, I think we should just save him the trouble and raze his house to the ground." Jetstream scowls. "But the Emperor is the ultimate authority, so it's up to him to decide punishment."

"I figured that." You nod. "I'm guessing you and Euclid want to come along?"

"Of course. We're the Emperor's swords, after all." Jetstream nods.

"Ah, well then, I suppose you should be getting ready now." Janice smiles as she strides in. "Kelsey told me what's going on. He's already gotten clearance to send us over to the palace. We can leave now unless there's anything else you need to do?"

The KM was a little bit shit, because muh tonks/muh planes/muh vengeance weapons took away a lot of resources. It's a pity, considering the fight that most KM ships gave when they did get stuck in.

Plus, being more or less next door to the bongs kinda makes it hard to develop a really strong naval tradition. RN kept a tight grip over naval superiority in Northern Europe.

Eh, The Kaiserliche marine pre-WW1 made a good showing. Sure they were playing catch up, but their ships were a lot more carefully designed, technically speaking. They also figured out far, far safer ammo handling practices than the RN ever bothered to adopt.

Crews started off pretty well too. Compare the gunnery of the East Asia Squadron to the British in the fights around Coronel and the Falklands. Notwithstanding that the Germans nearly beat the British at that last fight at the Falklands.

"No, we can go right now." You say.

""All right. Everybody else is already gathered!" Janice says.

You all head over to the hangar, where you see the Ghost Hawk and even the Comanche being prepared for liftoff. You see Ugly, already in the cockpit, snap a salute off to you as you pass. Meanwhile, you see Tarin, Ghost, and Nungesser being fitted into their strikers, ready to take off.

"Yo! Cap!" Red waves from the Ghost Hawk. "Come on! We're gonna be late!"

You quickly don your gear. You're not expecting a fight, but as a soldier, you knew that the Japanese would respect you more if you were dressed like you were. Once Janice, Jetstream, and Euclid give you the thumbs up signifying they're ready, you tap Bullseye on the shoulder to let him know to take off.

Your two helo and six witch formation slowly rises into the air as you all make a beeline for the Royal Palace. Looking out the side door, you could see you were drawing quite a bit of attention as you flew over Tokyo. Since it was the middle of the day, you could be seen rather easily, even if the people on the ground couldn't actually hear you.

"Looks like we've got company." Bullseye warns. You look up ahead to see a pair of Royal Guard witches move in to intercept. However, upon seeing you, they instead salute and allow you to pass. Seems like they still remembered your deeds as Princess Katsumi's savior.

Actually, you kind of wonder where Katsumi and Jess were right now. Probably out on the frontlines, or something. It seemed like something they would do.

Both the Ghost Hawk and the Comanche land in one of the palace courtyards, converted into a helipad. Ugly remains in his cockpit, ready to take off at a moment's notice, and Bullseye does the same.

"We'll be holding the fort here." Hoskins grunts. "Don't let us hold you up."

And then you see him. The Emperor slowly makes his way to the courtyard, flanked by a pair of Royal Guards.

"Ah, Captain Pierce!" He says happily. "What brings you here to my palace, today?"

"We need to speak privately." You say, looking at all of the gathered retainers and palace staff. "Somebody where nobody can hear."

"Aaaaaah." The Emperor nods. "Then to my audience chamber. It will be safe there."

The Emperor leads you into the palace. Now that you think about it, you've never actually stepped foot inside here before. You look around to see that almost everything was made of wood, albeit highly polished and decorative wood. Most of the doors and walls were also just that simple sliding rice paper panels, a bit like what you've seen in the movies. Everywhere, you see palace staff and Royal Guards, each of which would bow as the Emperor passed. Finally, you reach a room, where two witches are guarding the front door. You notice blue runes lining the doors and walls.

"A special technique we have cultivated for generations." The Emperor smiles. "No sound or signals in or out. Perfect for a private conversation."

"Nice." You nod, wondering if your own country had something like this.

"Now, I must ask your witches stay outside. Tradition, you see. Only me and the person I speak with are allowed in the room."

"And less potential assassins." You muse.

"Correct!" The Emperor barks with laughter. "But it is a sign of ultimate trust, to be completely alone in a room with another man, yes?"

"I guess." You concede as you step inside. The Emperor follows you in, and the the door slides closed with a soft click.

You're surprised at just how quiet the room is. No white or background noise, Just silence.

"So, what is it that you want to tell me?" The Emperor says as he takes a seat.

Okay, real talk.
Let's say good ol Big E already knows, and is just looking for a Miles Edgeworth to lay the smackdown on Takakura.

What would the repercussions on the home front be though? Like, there's actually some major internal strife going on? Sure they'll keep it subtle, but...

>>Tell him everything.

Worst case, going public with this could cause civil war as the other faction decides to launch a desperation attack/coup of some kind, or begins leaking massive amounts of NATO info to PACT. Homeland loyalty to the Emperor is not as guaranteed as it appeared to be, enough to cause problems.

Best case, the underlying inter-service conflict assists in dismantling the offending agency and begin quietly splitting up and absorbing useful assets, whilst basically disowning any rotten ones completely.
>>
>>38885221

Firstly, depends on how Big E does it. Does he do it quietly or loudly and openly as an example?

If quietly, the head may commit suicide for his 'failure to protect the agency against foreign forces'. In doing so, his family's honour is mostly sound but the intelligence agency will be shamed for some time. Those in the know, those who plotted against the emperor will see this for what it is, rooting out the opponents of the emperor and will likely not attempt anything further.

Now if this was done loudly, instantly the intelligence agency will be discredited for such an attack on the Emperor and may be disbanded. The family will be shamed, the head may just commit suicide instead of stand trial and the rest of his family members will be treated like pariahs by the rest of Japan.

Both ways, any further attempts to influence the Emperor on not letting Korea go will be vastly reduced unless they're idiots and the intelligence apparatus will be treated as very compromised and may eventually be replaced.

Major problems, both internally and externally if their main spy agency is suspect, with all operations in doubt and operatives not being trusted.

And you tell him everything. The mission into Korea where you extracted a Japanese deep cover agent. Your suspicions about Takakura's intentions as well as the operation you pulled to obtain evidence. You then slide the disk of all of the data you've gathered onto the table in front of him.

The Emperor, for his part, is silent throughout all of this. His expression quickly turning from his usual cheerful self to that of solid granite.

"So you admit to spying on my nation? One of your very own allies?" He finally asks, quietly.

"Yes." You say and bow your head to him in respect. "I know it was wrong, but it was the only thing we could do to help you, and your country."

The Emperor glares at you for what seems to be a very long time. You're almost half afraid he's going to whip out a katana and chop your head off as you bow, but finally he sighs and drops his royal facade. Instead of his blank, neutral expression, his face is instead stained with barely restrained fury.

Fortunately, it is not aimed at you.

"Takakura...." The Emperor hisses. "I knew he was a snake, but THIS. Aiding our enemies... being responsible for the deaths of thousands of Koreans and Japanese... all for what? TRADITION?!"

(cont)
>>
>>38885663

The final word is a powerful roar. You're thankful for the magical barrier around the room, as you were sure Royal Guard would be flooding in to investigate.

"Takakura must be made an example of." The Emperor seethes. "To defy the will of the Emperor is to invite death."

"Wait, so you're just going to kill him? Just like that?" You blink.

"Such is the crime for treason." The Emperor stands up and straightens out his robes. "I will have the Royal Guard show him the Emperor's Justice."

"You're just going to wipe them all out?!" You gasp.

"If the head of a house is poisoned, so is the rest of the body. No chances can be taken." The Emperor says as he stomps towards the door.

You're getting the feeling he's not thinking through this clearly.

"Is that the TRADITIONAL thing to do?" You say simply.

The word strikes the Emperor like a laser guided bomb and he stops in his tracks.

Finally, he sighs loudly and droops, and you get the feeling you're seeing the REAL Emperor. A tired, old man afraid of what the world will become once he's gone.

"I just want them to listen, for once." The Emperor turns to you, a pained look on his face. "Every day, I am compared to the previous emperors of old, as if they still have a say in matters of state. Never once have my retainers ever considered that an Emperor could conceivably break tradition. I was so intent on destroying Takakura with the same 'tradition' he wanted to protect..."

"Well, what do you want to do now?" You ask.

"What would YOU have me do, Captain?" The Emperor's eyes glint. "What would the foreigner who dove into danger to save my beloved daughter make of this situation?"

Not PJ related but at some point in ACQ I kind-of want to see Karla get shotdown so we can have a thread or two as Jaeger doing a bit of PJ himself.

"Karla punch out I can see fire coming from your plane!"
"Rodger. Punching out n-"
"Wildcard four status report!"

A trial would be the lawful thing to do, but it wouldn't come without cost, considering the culture we're dealing with. The innocent members of the Takakura family line will have their honor stained by the backlash.

We need to be pragmatic. Blackmail, as unlawful as it is, will prove to be a perfectly serviceable brand of justice.

Killing ain't gonna work. That'll leave grudges.

Arrest and trial ain't so clean either; once one side starts digging up stuff, there'll be no end to the shitflinging.

Blackmail is probably the least bad option. The family knows something's up with Takakura himself if they're getting the short end of the stick, and they can reason out why.

I think we should make clear to the big E that if this were peacetime, Putting him on Trial and making him accountable not just to the emperor but to the nation he betrayed would be the best option.

Let the traditionalists die the traditionalist ways. All the rest, let'em burn.

While this may be pretty rough for Japan in the short term, Big E wavin' his big stick should be enough to 'impress' the rest of the government, and also should show his drive for peace, showing the Chinese they can leave the Norks to dangle without risking a bigger, rougher invasion.

"Hmmmm, this makes sense." The Emperor nods. "Unfortunately, Takakura is not present in the palace. We will have to confront him at his estate. "It will be done." You nod.

"Good. Prepare to head out, then. We will tell your pilots where to go."

The Emperor then opens the door, causing the blue runs covering it to flicker and wink out. You see all your witches instinctively take a step back. You get the feeling that they had been pressing their ears against the wall or something to try and eavesdrop.

"Girls, get geared up and ready to go." You say. "We're going to be paying Takakura a visit."

"Sweet!" Red grins.

"Justice will be done." Jestream nods.

You see the Emperor whispering to his Guard captain, no doubt ordering him to organize a unit to raid Takakura's estate. You head back to the helipad, where the Ghost Hawk and Comanche are already getting ready to lift off. Your witches get back in their strikers while you and Red board the Ghost Hawk.

"Bullseye, why aren't we taking off yet?" You ask.

"The Palace won't give me clearance." Bullseye turns to you. "Says we're taking one additional passenger."

Now who-

And then you see the Emperor step into the courtyard, no longer in his traditional robes, but now sporting full fledged, genuine samurai armor.

"Sir?" You blink in surprise as he manages to pull himself into the Ghost Hawk, no small feat considering the extra weight of his armor.

"This is an operation to bring a wayward royal retainer into line. If this not a duty for an Emperor to handle personally, I don't know what is."

"Heh, better hold on tight then." You grin. "Bullseye can be a bit reckless sometimes."

"Hey, this ain't the first time I've flown a head of state!" Bullseye reminds you.

"Royal Guard, MOVE OUT!" The Emperor barks.

And NOW your formation gets a LOT of attention. Formations of Royal Guard Black Hawks and witches black out the sky as they head for the Takakura estate. You can only imagine the guards at the estate when they see the Emperor and his Guard rolling in at full force. None of them even put up a fight as the helicopters land and begin disgorging Royal Guard troops. Meanwhile, Ugly and the witches circle well above the estate, providing overwatch.

The moment the Ghost Hawk lands, the Emperor is already out the helo and striding towards the main building. Even with all of his armor and his advanced age, you still find it difficult to keep up with him as he storms forward with all the purpose in the world. Up ahead, you see Takakura standing at the front of his door, his daughter Misono standing just behind. He's also flanked by a pair of witch guards who reach for their katanas, only to be stopped by their master, to waves them off.

"My Lord." Takakura rumbles. "What brings you here to my estate this fine day, and in such force?"

"Do not play games with me, Takakura." The Emperor frowns. "I know what you have been up to, and you shall now pay for your crimes."

"You would execute one of your retainers as a common criminal?" Takakura raises an eyebrow. "That would not look good to the rest of the Royal Court."

"Which is why I'm providing you with another option." The Emperor grunts as he pulls a small blade from its sheathe and tosses it at Takakura's feet. "There is your answer. No trial, no execution. A simple, honorable exit."

"Father, you cannot-" Misono steps forward.

"Misono, stop." Takakura pushes her back lightly. "This is a matter beyond your abilities."

"No! I refuse!" Misono deflects her father's arm away and steps in between him and the Emperor, drawing her katana. The nearby Royal Guards, at least a dozen of them, draw their own weapons in response. "If you would take my father's honor, then I will fight for it!"

"You are asking for a trial by combat?" The Emperor raises his eyebrow.

"If that's what it takes!" Misono says, determined.

Oh god, she's going to get herself killed!

You decide to stay quiet and let the Emperor handle this.

"Misono, do not do this." Takakura says, almost pleading. "Let me accept my punishment."

"No! I refuse to believe you are guilty!" Misono says, tears in her eyes. "I challenge you, Emperor, in my father's place! If I prevail you will spare his life!"

"And if I win then both of yours are forfeit." The Emperor says sadly. "Benkei, will be my champion."

With that, a powerful witch steps up, sword already drawn. All you can do is watch helplessly when Misono charges. You know she's skilled, being able to fight against Jetstream, but right now, she was emotionally compromised. Not thinking straight. It was like an furious ocean crashing up on the shore. Yes, the waves were powerful, but even they couldn't crack the rocks. And this was the case now, as Benkei calmly deflects each and every one of Misono's attacks, not even budging from her position. Misono screams and puts even more effort in, her slashes becoming a blur of motion.

"Benkei, end this." The Emperor says simply.

You figure the Emperor did not send this Benkei out on a whim. The Royal Guard witch obviously knew what she was doing, and in a flash, finds a weak point in Misono's defense, smashing the pommel of her sword into Misono's throat. Misono goes into a coughing fit and collapses, dropping her sword. You see Benkei then raise her sword above her head.

She really was going to finish her off!

"Wait!" You bellow as you lunge forward and yank Misono away by the collar right as Benkei's sword comes down, slicing a deep gouge into the wooden floor. Red quickly interposes herself between you and the Royal Guard witch, keeping her shield up just in case.

"Captain?" The Emperor looks down at you. "Explain your actions."

"Come on, Emperor, this girl is just trying to protect her father! And you're going to KILL her for that?!" You stand up while Red takes your place to tend to Misono. "Is that what you really want?"

The Emperor looks at you, and then at Misono. However, before he can speak, Takakura, of all people, steps in.

"My Lord." Takakura kneels. "I hereby dissolve my house. My family name will be removed from the court, and my assets given to the throne. Nobody else but me shall be punished for my crimes."

"You would forsake your own house to save your own life?" The Emperor narrows his eyes.

"Just my daughter's." Takakura says, his hands curling around knife the Emperor dropped for him. "Her name will no longer be connected with my own. In that I hope she will not be judged for my actions."

The Emperor seems to stop to think for a second.

"It will be done." He nods.

"Thank you, my Lord." Takakura sighs and presses the blade against his abdomen.

"Father, no!" Misono manages to croak as she tries to lunge forward, but Red wraps her arms around her to hold her back.

"Stay down!" Red grunts. "Just stay down and don't look!"

"But-"

"Misono I'm sorry I've never said this to you, but I am proud at what a brave and loyal daughter you have been." Takakura smiles sadly. "The Emperor will tell you many things about me, and they are all most likely true, but know that I did what I did for the good of Japan."

"Father-!"

But we got merlin, goose, and Frank got two new daughters. There's going to be a inflation of it.
>>
>>38887511

And with that, Takakura plunges the blade into his gut. You see his eyes bulge and his teeth grit from the pain, but he commits and drives the blade even further, slicing up his own insides before finally keeling over. It's just utterly painful to watch not just a man die, but to see over a dozen men and women standing around him not even lifting a finger to help, you included.

You can see Red continue to keep Misono pinned to the ground, her hands now over her face to keep her from watching, though you could still hear Misono's muffled sobs.

Finally, the deed is done and Takakura's body is reverently carried away. Red escorts Misono out, leaving you alone with the Emperor again.

"The official story will be that Takakura has died of natural causes, and will be given a state funeral befitting of his rank." The Emperor says grimly. "However, there is the matter of defying me in front of my own Guard..."

"I don't regret what I did." You say with determination.

"I'm sure you do not." The Emperor nods. "And I decree that your punishment will be..."

You brace for it.

"...you shall assume responsibility for Misono. With her family name rescinded, she is now simply a Ronin with nowhere to go. That is my final decision."

"You... you..." You blink in surprise. "You planned this, didn't you?!"

"Perhaps." The Emperor finally smiles. "Regardless, whether she lived or died, Misono will find it hard staying in Japan. I figured it would do her more good to go out and see the world, learn new things her father regretfully never did."

"And of course, you get all of Takakura's property."

"It will go a long way to compensating the victims of this war." The Emperor nods.

"And IIS?"

"It will be reorganized to root out its corruption. Perhaps it is not a good idea to have defense ministries run directly by the Royal Court." The Emperor says. "I thank you for your service this day, Captain Pierce. Though, if you you must spy on my subjects, I hope you'd be able to trust me enough to tell me beforehand."

"I'll think about it." You sigh. "I'm gonna go back to base and get some sleep. It's been a hectic day."

"I envy you for that. I still have this political mess to clean up." The Emperor chuckles. "Until next time."

With that, the Emperor gives you one final respectful nod before walking off, heading for one of the Royal Guard helicopters this time.

That Emperor... he sure was an odd guy...
