Second Verse, Part 5

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

Yesterday was enjoyed observing a melee in which your younger brother Hugo distinguished himself, the night in conference with the Count Foix. A new day comes however, and this day is the feast day of the Apostle Saints. There will be a church service to begin with, followed by a feast hosted by Lord Gerard. Games and entertainment are expected to run until the evening. You however re not in Sidon for the festivities. You are here to solidify an alliance against the Egyptian Caliphate, your goal the invasion and seizure of the port city of Ascalon.

You have already managed to gain the support of Count Foix and the representatives of the city-state of Genoa.

You awake in the chamber provided to you by your host. A decent sized room for your station, with a broad comfortable bed that you shared with your bed-mate Chihirizahd. Curtains hanged open to let in the early morning light, causing you to shadow your face with a hand as you blinked away the last of a pleasant sleep. Your companion mumbled and stirred, but she did not rise. As this was a day of Christian celebration, mayhap that was for the best.

You had your brother Hugo enter to assist you into changing into your best for the Church mass that would be in the hour. He seemed tender footed this morning, wincing at the morning light. No doubt after his victory yesterday the soldiers of your company had seen fit to toast him until dawn, and it was a little miracle he had the strength to muster his formal duties.
>>
Once you were dressed, with sword attached (still mindful of the attempted assassination from the day previous) you consider sending an invitation to someone asking if they would like to accompany you to the service. It might be a religious service, but it was also an opportunity to bond more with your fellow nobility of Christendom.

You considered those lords still in attendance. There was of course his Lordship Gerard of Sidon, and Count Roger of Foix, but also the Iberian knight Rodrigo, the knight Sir Christopher of Gascony, and a minor noble, a cousin to the Argonese king Alfonso the Battler, called Ramiro of Occitania.

All these things to consider. Or you could bring along a more personal guest.

The Greek "Boy"

And welcome back, been looking forward to this!
>>
>>38895424
Unless it is strictly only Catholics

If that is the case i would say the Argonese noble

Aragonese that is, as pertaining to the kingdom of Aragon.

aww yiss we're back!

How did your weeb pilgrimage go, OP? Did any weeb stuff or hauled loot back?

I can't remember most of these nobles to be honest, the Greek I guess? Time to re-read the archives

Get to nominating you slacker so i wont feel so alone!
>>
>>38895365
Hmm Hugo could use a breather after the melee, Solobro is out doing his part, Franz probably won't be much for the festivities. We could always invite Orlando I suppose or some female companionship.

>>38895424
Indeed welcome back.

I wouldn't mind spending some more time with the Greek myself. I'm a little rusty on our social maneuvering. What was our stance on Sir Froggy by the way?
>>
>>38895612
>What was our stance on Sir Froggy by the way?

Good. We are going to agree on trade caravans from Sidon to Ramla. Trading in horses. But that is for another time. We should really focus on someone who could provide us with stuff for the war

Are your intentions pure anon? We already have a betrothed ya know.

>Haha bard knight.
>>
>>38895548
It was good. Made some new friends, got to experience some new things. Saw the snow monkeys, got engaged.

Japanese castles are pretty damn cool, though I only saw three. The one we really wanted to go to was closed for renovation (Hajime Castle). Akihabara was pretty cool. Really wanted to buy a model of the tank from Valkyria Chronicles but couldn't justify the expense and lugging it around Japan. Most of our money went into doing things rather than picking up loot. We didn't have all that much spending cash.
>>
>>38895684
>Are your intentions pure anon? We already have a betrothed ya know.

Anon. It is perfectly fine for us to bang other women even though we are promised to someone else. We are a nobleman in the 11th century
>>
>>38895684
But it doesn't count if it's Greek!
>>
>>38895752
As long as those other women aren't you know directly related to royalty... or an imperial lineage.
>>

Just be discreet really. Only in trouble if you get caught.
>>
>>38895365
I'm going to nominate the Iberian Knight Rodrigo since why not.
>>
>>38896046
Think it is a bit late on that one mate.
>>
>>38895691

Cool man, glad to hear you had a great time!
>>
You decide to call on 'Stylianos' the Greek nobleman in exile. You send Sir Etienne's squire Jacques to fetch 'him'. The boy scappers off, giving you time alone with Hugo. The boy for all his victory and celebration of yesterday, seems oddly sullen as he finishes in his duty, eventually settling onto a chair, slouching into it. Perhaps it was just tiredness, but you had noted a change in your brother recently. He was no longer as bright eyed as you remembered, and oft had a shadow under his eyes.

Perhaps it was nothing, and you were being overly anxious about his well being.

You went to the antechamber of your quarters to await a response to your invitation.

Soon enough Jacques returned with the young woman in men's clothing.

It was a sin to assume another gender. Punishable with burning at the stake. Still, you could understand why she might take such drastic measure, and her costume was very convincing. If it had not been for your attentive concubine you might still think she was the young man she claimed to be. Dressed in a Frankish fashion to fit in with the other guests 'Stylianos' was a dark haired, green eyed man of slim build. A dandy for the world to see. Nothing one wouldn't expect from the so-called Roman nobility.

At 'his' shoulder walked a tall Englishman, drooping moustach'd and somber. Yellow-haired Ethelred, an exile or son of exile from that outcast stock from the Norman conquest. Even in such secure surroundings he walked armed with long handled axe and armoured in maile and lamelar. A fearsome man. You were consider tall yourself, and he shadowed you.

Stylianos offered you a smile and a hand. You shook it.

"It has not been easy making friends," he said in 'his' accented Latin, "Thank you for remembering me."

"You are a memorable sort," you replied, taking the offered hand and giving a respectful nod to Ethelred.
>>
Stylianos seemed pleased by this. "I am keen to see the rituals of the Church of Rome," he said as you started out, "Perhaps it might better my understanding of your people."

'Your people'. It seemed a funny thing. The land was considered under the dominion of the Church, but you could not call it the same as in your homeland. Still, as this was your new home you supposed it was appropriate to better learn these rituals as well.

The two of you (four if you counted Hugo and Ethelred) walked together to the Church of St Paul, built where the Saint had thought to have preached the gospel in older times. A congregation of common and noble had gathered to attend the mass. You found yourself near the head of the congregation, with the rest of the lordship of the realm. A priest of middle years led the service. He was dressed in fine silk, his fingers laden with gold and silver rings. He spoke with some fervour but you noted his Latin a little poor, rough with the accent of Jerusalem.
When the sacrament was produced you near went to take it, but was stalled by a hand. Lord Gerard frowned at you as the cup and bread was held up to view. The assembly, on their knees, looked up to it in worship.

You were a bit irritated being denied the sacrament, but did not make a fuss on the issue, as none other went to recieve it.

"We practice adoration," Lord Gerard said low to both you and Stylianos, "I do not know how things are done in your homeland, but this is the practice here."

You nodded. You had heard of this Adoration, and seen it practiced during your journey through Italy. It was said to become the standard way of things. Still, you noted with some chagrin that the priest drank the wine and ate the bread. Not all were forced to merely look upon the divine compact with Christ.
>>
When the mass was done you walked a little with Stylianos from the church through the city. Peasant folk gave youu a wide berth, though many other nobles were taking in the morning with a stroll along the water front. You nodded to Sir Rodrigo as he passed in company with other Iberian folk, and the nod he returned, smiling as well.

"That was different," the Greek noted as the two (four) of you walked together, "Not unpleasant though."

Different for you as well, and a little different even from the other, humbler masses you had attended.

"The mid-day feast will have acrobats, they say," 'he' said, "Able to contort themselves into letters and strange shapes. Would you like to join me? It sounds like it shall be quite the show." A tempting offer.

"I would be happy to accept," you reply. The young man gave a happy clap, smile growing. He seemed starved for company, and your gesture of friendship seems to have touched 'him' deeply. Still, it was some time before the midday feast, and you would have to change before it began.

You weren't a peasant or poor landless knight any more.

You parted company for now and returned to your quarters. There you came upon a sight that made your stomach jolt a little. Sabeen and Mohmed had small carpets unfurled, on their knees and heads bowed, facing south and speaking in the twisted language of the Arab, giving prayer to their false-prophet. They paid no heed to their returned Christian friends as they worked through their heathen rituals.

You were happy at least that you had not returned with some noble guest.

Once they finished they rolled up their carpets, speaking a little to one another in Arabic. When they finally noticed you Mohmed smiled, but Sabeen seemed faintly embarrassed.

You had spent time in Muslim company as much as Christian in the holy land, but had never really witnessed any of their practices up close. You had to think it was an alien manner of worship, and a little unsettling.

"How was your Mass?" Sabeen asked, carpet tucked under her arm.

"Good enough," you replied, feeling a little ill as you walked past her, rubbing at your face.

"Oh, forgive me," she replied, and you turned back to see her smiling awkwardly, "I was asking Hugo."

Now that really did confuse you. You gave your little brother a considering look and he looked away and to the ground, muttering some reply under his breath. You gave him a hard poke. "Speak clearly and with a good voice," you chided. You didn't want him to grow into being a mutterer.

He looked up at you then straight at Sabeen. "It was uplifting," he replied, "Too long since my last proper service." Sabeen's brow furrowed but she then smiled, walking away with her carpet.
>>
A curious exchange between the pair. It might need some attention from you, whatever was playing out between those two. For now though you had other concerns. You entered your chamber to find Chihirizahd waiting. She had tidied the bed, and set out your change of clothes, and helped you out of your older set and into the new.

"Be careful with this Roman girl," she said after you told her of your morning, "I think she will attract much trouble to herself and those around her."

"Hmm?" it wasn't her way to speak much on evils.

"Consider that she needs powerful friends, that she goes to great lengths and courts much danger to hide her identity. That of course means she has powerful enemies," she explained, "And with your position so newly gained you must be careful before involving yourself in an empire as twisted up as the one she belongs to. The Romans and the Kingdom of Jerusalem are uncertain allies at the very best of times. Meddling with them might bring great ruin to you and those you fight for."

You take on her warning. She had yet to give you bad advice. Still, you were not willing to throw out your association with the strange Greek on her word alone. Yes there was danger, but you also spied opportunity. The two go hand-in-hand.

It needn't just be the two of you at the mid-day feast, you had the opportunity to bring at least two companions other than your squire.

You decide to bring Etienne and Chihirizahd.

Chihirizahd wears her best dress, a tight thing that was skirting with indecency. You had no complaints about the grip of the fabric however, and took her by the arm. Sir Etienne (and as a consequence his squire Jacques) came in company as well. Jacques wore the colours of Jerusalem, his steps jingling for the knightly spurs he wore, chin freshly shaved and fingers plucking at his fussy little moustache. Jacques for once looks well scrubbed and presentable.

The two squires fall in together, exchanging some rough conversation filled with coarse language and exchanged insults. Some talk of pig-mothers and sexual acts involving mules.

It was good to see Hugo had a friend.

You met Stylianos and 'his' looming bodyguard by the steps to the courtyard, exchanging a polite bow. 'His' eyes skim over your companions. Chihirizahd grants the girl-in-disguise a knowing smile which leaves Stylianos looking a tad flustered. He has arranged a table for your company, close to the performance space. A healthy mix of acrobats, jugglers, bards and other such entertaining folk had gathered for the amusement of the nobility. And the nobility had come in force. Sword armed men sat with their fellows and thir lady-folk both, eating from offered plates as they gestured at this contortionist and that juggler, more concerned with their own company than anything else.

And it was a deadly company. For all the gentle manners and well groomed assembly, not a man went without a weapon, none were completely unscarred. You had heard this land had the gift of a violent end for the menfolk that tried to gain its mastery, more common than any other place on the earth. Every Christian male was expected to defend and attack as the borders shifted over the home of Christ. It had left many widows and vengeful brothers. Every summer seemed to end with a listing of the chivalrous dead.
>>
But perhaps it was because of this near expectation of an early death in battle that the noble folk of Jerusalem did committ much to their feast days. Attention to their dressing, preparing lavish entertainment, and falling into quick friendships of unrestrained conversation. With the knowledge that tomorrow could bring death at an infidels hand, it seemed to bond those that took up arms faster than it would in the safer lands of Europe.

Or perhaps that was just your foreign eyes making hasty judgement.

"This is not so lavish, compared to the displays in Constantinople," Stylianos said, "The Kaiser has a throne. Attached to it, a mechanical lion that roars. I have seen it. Heard it. A marvel of engineering."

You nod as you watch a young woman, slim as an otter, bind herself up into strange shapes with the aid of a long trail of fabric. The flexibility on display sent a hot surge through you.

"Much is made of the engineers of the Empire," Etienne said, "Many strange warmachines are brought out in its defense. Greek Fire is reckoned the most terrible thing."

Stylianos shrugged. "I know little of the particulars of Greek Fire. My education was cut off after my father passed and my uncle tried to seize my lands. Though, yes, we have many things the rest of the world does not. Including the Fire. Our armies are what makes us truly strong. It is not like what is found out here. We have proper soldiery, legions in the style of Old Rome. Professionals, with trained generals and under officers near bred for the task of commanding them."

That raised some ire from your Frankish company, and a little from yourself.

"Yet it was this unprofessional rabble that retook Jerusalem, rescuing your people from the besieging Mohammedan," Etienne replied with some heat in his voice, "And it was your armies that abandoned us in King Baldwin's warring with the Turks."

Stylianos near rose from her chair, anger thick in her voice. "A Frank should not lecture others on loyalty and what it means to be abandoned!" She sounded very much the woman as the pitch of her voice rose, her mask slipping by inches as she stood.

"By God, the arrogance of you Greeks is boundless," Etienne snorted as he stood from his own. The other company of the day was glancing to your table with stirring curiosity. "You cannot keep to anything. To a Church, to an alliance. There is nothing more slippery than the Greek, or more arrogant than the one that claims to be Roman."

Ethelred loomed.

"Peace!" you join them in standing, hands outstretched. There is a pause in their bickering as their eyes turn to you. "Are we perfect creations? No. One has betrayed the other and the other has returned the favour. But we are still brothers in Christ. This tit for tat is exactly what has caused such grief for both our peoples. If it is to forever continue we may as well surrender our lands to the Moslem now to spare us the bloodshed."

You spoke only sense, and what seemed the truth plain and obvious to you.

"Ever have I heard people be called 'most treacherous' over all others. It is said by neighbors about one another most often. It solves nothing to side-eye what might be a friend when we have true enemies at our door."

"You are not wrong," Etienne conceded, returning to his seat.

"No, you are not," she replied, taking her own, "But you aren't entirely right either." Still, she did not offer further rejoinder, and kept her seat, masculine disguise soon recomposing. They turned their attention to a dancing bear handled by two swarthy men, chains wrapped about its feet and muzzle, cold iron through the pads of its paws forcing it to shuffle. It was a shaggy, black furred creature that snorted through its chains. It's eyes were large and wet.

Chihirizahd looked on it with a womanly sorrow as she watched it shamble about to the laughter of the crowd, but the squires threw fruit at the bear instead, causing a pained rumble to come from its belly.

"Enough of that," you said, staying Hugo's hand before he could lob another piece of apple at he creature. He looks up at you with surprise, and blanches from your slight scowl. "A knight behaves with better manners," you said, even as a knight at another table does exactly as the squires had been doing, pelting the beast with bread rolls instead, much to the amusement of his table.

You glance over. "It is not for us to behave as others," you said, "But to be better than ourselves when the opportunity arises. Even in the small moments. Especially in the small moments. What matters the grand display of goodness when compared to a long armed list of small cruelties?" You release his hand and ruffle his head. Hugo looked a little ashamed, a little haggard. "You are still growing. You will make missteps and behave poorly. God knows I do. But you must fight against those instincts that would have you act like a lesser man."

"It is no crime he has committed..." Etienne said with a frown.

You laughed without bitterness, his remark striking you as amusing. "What a sad world it would be, if morality was only dictated by the letter of the law."

When the two men shuffle their bear away and a puppeteer is brought out to replace them you see Chihirizahd's distress fade. You squeeze her arm gently and she offers you a tender smile.

"You are a good man," Stylianos said, "But perhaps a bit soft."

Wine was brought to your table and you all had some to drink. Then Stylianos hunched in, ready to speak about business rather than idly pleasnatries.
>>
"So Lord Ramla, I was wondering if you might speak with Lord Gerard on my behalf. You said he was an uncertain ally but the two of you seem good enough friends. Perhaps with your support he might back my claim. It will be worth the effort. My lands are rich. If they were poor my uncle would not be so persistent."

Maybe he would if you were to take up her cause. But he had just offered to lend you arms on one endeavour already. And it was no minor undertaking. But it might not hurt to at least get a token gesture out of him, if you did mean to enter into an Imperial intrigue with the boy-girl. She looked to you, trying to seem a worldly player of this game, but looking more the fake, inexperienced and on a nervous edge.

It was not your habit to abandon women in distress, even if they paraded about as a boy. But you were not a landless knight who could throw in with any stray these days. You had responsibilities and ambitions of your own.

> unfortunately you cannot ask more from him

We could however see if we could give her an audience with the queen. Think about it. The Queen is currently in a bit of a fiddle with the Empire about Antioch, she could use an ally. The greek would get a powerful friend to help her protect her land and she would owe us a great deal in return.
>>
>>38899147
Actually, supporting this. If 'he' wins, we talk to Gerard. If she is to play at being a man, let us put her to the test!

by this I mean giving her the Koblenz & getting us some Engineers & soldiers.

We are way past that anon, we are currently talking business and acting like a tavern patron is not gonna go well
>>
>>38899224
I made that comment when she said we were soft. We have to get her drunk to obtain our measure of her.
>>
>>38899217
Its just. Gerad is not a person you want to owe a favour. Which is why i think it might be better if we set her up with the queen

>>
>>38899125
>"If you can afford to wait a bit, I can get you an audience with the Queen."
>>
>>38899419
She is naturaly welcome to stay with us in Ramla intill it is granted
>>
She is asking of you something you don't feel comfortable delivering. Your relationship with Lord Gerard was fairly strong, and you possibly could draw a promise out of him, but at the same time you could not afford to distract him from the undertaking for Ascalon. The idea of being in Lord Gerard's debt did not sit well with you either. He was ruthless man in business, and you could certainly see him being ruthless even with an erstwhile ally. If you asked more from him going off just your word, there was no knowing what he would expect from you in return.

So it was unfortunate that you had to raise your hand. "I'm sorry Stylianos, but that won't be possible," you said.

Her face dropped fast, near crumbling. It was a pitiful sight. She nodded dumbly though. No doubt she had grown used to being told 'no' before now.

It unsettled you enough that you spoke again, mayhap a bit rashly. "However, I can try and vouch for your claim with Queen Melisende," you said. Another powerful figure you had promised much too. "It will not be tomorrow. Such will take time. But I am in good standing with the royal family."

Her expression lifted, eyes climbing up to yours.

"You could do that?" she asked.

You nodded. "Not for nothing, of course. Still, I would speak on your behalf with the Queen."

Her face broke into a genuine smile. "My thanks Lord Ramla."

"Wilhelm," you replied, "My friends call me Wilhelm."

She bowed her head. "My thanks, Wilhelm."

You drummed your fingers as another thought came to you. "Until I can speak with the Queen, you are welcome to lodge with my people in Ramla."

"A generous offer," she replied.

"Not selfless however," you said, "I think you are a worthwhile investment Stylianos. Well worth putting some time and energy into. And keeping you close will keep you out of trouble, no?"
>>
>>38899147
I second (third?) the motion.
>>
"Or draw trouble to you," Chihirizahd said that softly for only you to hear, a faint murmur in your ear. You gave her a frown, but did not reply to the muttered warning.

Stylianos bowed her head. "We are in your debt. Ethelred and I would be happy to accept your invitation."

> Stylianos Doukas joins your household
> Ethelred of Wessex joins your household

With that settled you enjoy the performance of a small group of troubadours, a cup of wine in one hand, Chihirizahd in the other. All in it had been a pleasant day.

The revelry of the day gives over to evening and the expected banquet however. You had an invitation to sit with Lord Gerard at the high table, but Hugo had a conflicting choice, to sit with Lord Gerard, the Templars or with the Count Foix.

Rolled 2 (1d2)

Bad news. I have to call the session early.

I'm a little too fucked up to continue.

I'm really sorry about this.

If I'm feeling better later I'll start a new thread tonight, at around six o'clock. But as it is I need to rest.

You guys have been really patient with me and my fucked up schedule so far and I thank you for that. I hope this doesn't put you guys off too much.

I'm not sure who won the vote since it looks pretty close so I'm going roll a 1d2 on it. Winner is the opening POV of the next thread.

1 is Wilhelm
2 is Hugo
