You are Richard Caldwell. Earlier today, you met Margaret Montgomery, a potential marriage partner. Then your older brother James was murdered. Then Killer-of-Many, a dangerous murder spirit, broke through the wards, and your group dissipated to avoid its wrath. Then you found a quiet place to sit with Margaret, discussing her myriad talents as well as the current situation.

Then there was a crash from upstairs. Margaret casts her glance up at the ceiling, her body tense. You look around the room, not wanting anyone to come inside while she's distracted.

"Though I have some skill in fire magic," Margaret begins. "I am uncertain if the flame I can manage spontaneously would be sufficient to handle Killer-of-Many. You are more familiar with it than I; would this," she says, flicking her hand, a brief flame, around the size of a baseball, appearing in the palm of her hand and then vanishing, "level of fire be sufficient?"

You consider it, then shake your head. "Maybe if it was just the two of us. If that sound was Killer-of-Many attacking other people, it probably wouldn't be helpful."

"Hmm." Margaret considers it. "It probably wasn't Killer-of-Many, given the quiet that followed, though I defer to your expertise; do you wish to investigate, Richard?"

>Nah, you like your head where it is.
>Yes. You want more information to try to figure out what the hell is going on.

"Yeah," you say, rising from your seat and casting a quick look around, ensuring you're alone again.

Margaret rises as well, offering you her hand, and you take it. She takes the lead, which is appropriate, given the fact that she knows the building better than you, and has superior combat skills. Her free hand is held in a curious position, palm up, fingers shaped into a claw, her thumb pressed into the side of it.

You find the cause of the crash; a knocked over bookshelf, with some blood spilt nearby. Margaret casts around for evidence, and winds up kneeling next to the, releasing your hand with only a quick "keep watch." She runs her finger through a murky, luminescent white substance that's pooled under one side of the shelf, and she tests its texture with her thumb. "Ectoplasm," she notes. She glances up. "Given the amount, I suspect the spirit is dead, though one can never be certain. It could be a serious wound to a more powerful spirit. Are any of your family's enemies of sufficient scope?"

You pause to think, looking at the pool of ectoplasm, then shake your head. "Maybe Killer-of-Many, when it's getting at a big crowd... but I doubt it."

"Then I suspect we have at least two hostile spirits on our grounds, possibly more. Had there been but one, this looks to have been a killing blow, and there would be no reason for its killers - our presumptuous allies - to depart. Is it just murder spirits that your family has offended?" She glances at you.

"Yeah," you say, quiet.

She rises, removing a handkerchief from her pocket and cleaning her fingers of ectoplasm before folding it up and returning it. "Then I believe we are in greater danger than Monique previously surmised. Again, I find I must defer to your expertise on the subject of your family's enemies. What would you recommend?"

"I think we should hide, honestly," you say, feeling cowardly just from saying it. "Multiple unknown spirits... I'm not much of a fighter, and while I know you've managed in violent circumstances before, I get the impression they're not your expertise."

Margaret gives you a look, then sighs, nodding. "I'll admit, I have not been in straits quite so dire as these in the past. It is best to know one's limits, and if I am honest, I doubt my ability to kill more than a single murder spirit, if that. It is probably better to leave this to our elders."

Margaret shows you the way to a fairly defensible position, a windowless bedroom in the middle of the house, without windows and with only one door. After you get done putting a bookshelf in front of the door, the two of you sit on the bed, and the silence isn't awkward.

Her hand moves towards yours on the bed, flipping it over so that it's palm up before her fingers lace together with yours. Her body is stiff as she does it, and she looks away from you, studying the other bookshelf. You squeeze her hand back. You can see the pink hue to her cheeks, the blush that comes in involuntary response. She steadies herself, before looking back to you. "Mr. Caldwell," she says, rather formally. "I am sorry that our first meeting has gone so poorly."

You give a weak smile back. "It's not your fault."

"No," she replies. "But..." the hand that's not currently holding yours comes over to you, her slender fingers brushing your cheek, and they feel electric. "I have to admit, I think you have distinguished yourself quite well."

"Thanks," you say. "Ah, you're impressive too."

"Thank you. Ordinarily..." she trails off, hesitant, then steels herself. "I have maintained my chastity," she whispers in your ear. There's primal desire in her words, under the incompetent and unpracticed seduction.

You move your free hand to her shoulder, keeping her from getting any closer, from doing anything she'll regret. "Ms. Montgomery," you say, "while maintaining your chastity for marriage is admirable, I think that subject is a bit inappropriate, given our current circumstances."

"We're in little danger of interruption," she says, and there's that animal tinge to her words. Her shoulder presses against the palm of your hand as she tries to approach. "The bookshelf should keep any intruders out for at least a few seconds."

"Really, ma'am," you say, harder this time, making her eyes widen for a moment. "Now is not the time."

She pulls away, her hand leaving yours and taking a new place in her lap. She straightens her back and casts an imperious gaze at the bookshelf. Some inner conflict plays out on her face, her lips twitching. "I am sorry. Perhaps this situation has had more of an effect on me than I thought. Please, forgive my indiscretion, and preferably forget it as well."

"Consider it done," you say, and an awkward silence hangs over the room. It's odd that earlier today you discovered your brother's corpse, and yet your thoughts are completely preoccupied by this present awkwardness. You also really hope that you didn't make the wrong decision there and offend her incontrovertibly. Latching the Caldwells to the Montgomerys would be good even if you somehow kill every spirit that your father made an enemy of.

After a few minutes, there's a thump at the door, a heavy weight against it. It repeats, and Margaret rises, her hand adopting that clawed form once more, presumably readying some fire magic. You rise after her, hurriedly casting through your thoughts for a relevant magical spell.

Your fingers go through a quick sequence of symbols, and you finalize it by giving Margaret a quick tap on the back. She blinks before offering you a brief smile. Then the bookshelf falls forward, toppled to one side, and you get a good look at the half-shredded ruins of the door as the spirit on the other side frantically claws through it. You take a few steps backward, and Margaret just stares at the door, body tense, as the wood splinters and chips beneath repeated blows.

When a large, irregular hole has been sliced through the door, the spirit behind it enters. It's not Killer-of-Many; you'd guess Lady-of-Blades, though you haven't seen her yourself. A feminine appearance, in a flowing dress that doesn't touch the floor. A few dozen knives float through the air around her, gathering around her hands and the bottom of her dress. She turns her head towards the two of you, and it lets you properly see the faceless blank it is.

Then Margaret lobs a glob of fire at her, fastball style, and Lady-of-Blades dodges to one side, leaving the flame to hit the door, charring and consuming part of it before consuming itself. Lady-of-Blades charges, and Margaret dodges to one side, her motion aided just a little by your charm. Knives stick in the wall and bed, and she yanks some of them out, wheeling on Margaret, who's scrambling towards the door. Margaret manages to force her body through the hole in the door before any of Lady-of-Blades knives get to her, possibly due to your spell...

Leaving you alone in the room with a dangerous murder spirit. Your fingers hurriedly cast another protective charm on yourself, even as Lady-of-Blades turn to charge you.

I wonder if Margaret's sudden advances were the spirit's influence on her. It feels sort of like a slasher movie thing, how the people who have sex during the crisis are certain to die. Kind of fits with Lady-of-Blades' appearance. Maybe she has the ability to distract her targets?

You try to cast a protective spell of your own, as you move to one side of the room, keeping your eyes on Lady-of-Blades. She approaches, menacing, dangerous, and you try to recall your own flame spells, something useful for offense. Given your family's current situation, you've done some studying of them, but you're not competent. The fingertips one? Your fingers dance in a little sequence, and you blow away the tiny flickers of flame, letting them drift through the air towards Lady-of-Blades, like dandelion seeds on the wind. It forces Lady-of-Blades to stop and reorient, which you take advantage of to move further towards the door, stopping short to avoid a flung blade that buries itself in the wall.

As Lady-of-Blades testily moves towards you, flinging knife after knife into the space between you and the door, keeping you from escaping as though she were a soldier laying down suppressing fire. Each time she tries to strike you directly, you manage to dodge one way or another, but that's more luck than anything else.

Then a spout of flame gushes into the room, colliding with Lady-of-Blades, who was too distracted with you to keep track of Margaret. She collapses to the ground, and there's not much she can really do, other than try desperately to put out the fire by rolling around; her own flesh would just catch further fire if she tried to pat it out. But it's magical fire, and her flailing accomplishes little; Margaret throws another glob at the thrashing form of Lady-of-Blades, and a few seconds later, the spirit goes still, its coherence vanishing, the blades it carried collapsing to the ground as one.

"We should find shelter elsewhere," Margaret says, sticking her head through the door. "I presume that was not Killer-of-Many either?" You shake your head. "Ideas, Mr. Caldwell?"

"Let's try to meet up with Monique," you say, and Margaret nods, pulling her head back through the hole. You follow her through it, brushing yourself off. "Thanks, by the way."

"You provided a useful distraction, letting me make a shot without her evading; think nothing of it." She pauses, quiet, one of her fingers touching the wall, as though testing it. She gives a quick shake of her head. "I'm afraid my more sensory magic isn't working well at the moment. I can't detect anyone in particular."

"Let me think," you say, and you work to recall Monique's patterns. It's a mush, but your best guess is... "I think she'd go down rather than up. Do you have a cellar or basement?"

Margaret nods, and guides you towards it. She holds you by the wrist to ensure you stay near her. When you enter the room with Monique, she points her gun at you, and the two of you reflexively raise your hands, defensive. Then she lowers it, giving a loud sigh, of annoyance more than anything else. "Why are you two here? I believe we agreed to separate?"

"There's more spirits than Killer-of-Many at play," Margaret says. "Mr. Caldwell recommended reconnecting with you, under the circumstances, and I deferred to his expertise."

"I know there are more spirits than Killer-of-Many," Monique says. She casts an annoyed glance in your direction.

"We can't just hunker down forever," you say. "They'll get us eventually."

"Patience and diligence, Mr. Caldwell," Monique replies. "They come at us, we strike back, eventually they'll be dead."

"Ms..." Margaret interrupts.

"Tailler," Monique supplies.

"Ms. Tailler. I mean no offense, but certainly you can't consider that an optimal plan?"

"A plan doesn't have to be optimal to work," Monique replies. Margaret gives a sour look at that for just a moment.

You pipe up. "How badly were the cars damaged?"

"Pretty badly," Monique says. "Doubt we could fix them, if that's what you're getting at."

Before you can say anything further, you hear a cry from upstairs. Female, but aged. "Grandmother," Margaret whispers, her face pale. She turns to you and Monique. "Come on, we have to help her."

Monique I have an observation, If Elenor dies the wards will fall completely. Meaning we will be found and overrun. if she is inured the whole in the wards remains indefinitely, and the tide of spirits will eventually end us. We need her to shut the hole so we can secure this place. Plus it is the right thing to do.

>>
You offer her your hand, and she takes it, turning around before even giving you the opportunity to make your consent explicit. She practically rushes up the stairs, yanking you behind her, and there's a surprising amount of force behind her pull, more than you'd expect for a girl her size. Luckily, your stride is longer than hers, so you can keep up in spite of the sudden jerks as she turns without warning.

You spot the spirits before you spot Eleanor; three of them, and by the pool of ectoplasm on the floor, you'd guess there used to be more. The largest of them is serpentine, a single long, coiling body, its mouth full of sharp, jagged teeth. Then there's another that's small, a flickering light, and the last looks vaguely like a stylized artillery piece with four spider legs, its cannon positioned like a scorpion.

The pseudo-artillery piece keeps taking shots at Eleanor, forcing her to move this way and that to avoid it, and you're not certain how much longer she can manage. There's a long gash in her side, her dress half in tatters, and she's breathing heavily. Her spirit looks worse; the crystalline surfaces have lost their luster, looking glassy and dull, and they make only belabored movements. Each flicker of flame she manages to hurl at one of the spirits is dodged, and her motions are agonizingly slow as she casts spells.

Margaret lets go of your hand to hurl fire at the spirits, her expression intense, the glow at her spirit's center intensifying for a moment before each throw. The spirits notice her arrival, and dodge, and her fireballs accomplish little more than leaving marks on the floor.

Of course, Eleanor's cry didn't attract only human attention, and you spot a sinister-looking murder spirit, which looks like nothing so much as a vulture but with a knife instead of a beak, slowly rising from below, its wings beating rapidly. By Margaret's expression, she hasn't noticed it yet.

"Seven o'clock," you shout, and Margaret's eyes flick to one side, her hand tossing a new batch of fire in its direction. The creature goes down in a burst of flame, and your fingers dance out a luck spell, targeted haphazardly in Eleanor's direction. You manage to hit the old woman, and work to cast another protective charm on the woman you hope to marry. She returns her attention to the spirits surrounding Eleanor, and you tap out the charm on Margaret's back.

It's a desperate fight, made worse by the appearance of additional spirits, but in the end, your trio does dispose of the spirits attacking Eleanor.

None of them are Killer-of-Many.

She collapses as soon as the last murder spirit melts into a goop of ectoplasm, and her hands are pressed tight to her side. Her spirit looks in even worse shape, cracks appearing in its surface, and Margaret rushes to her side, forgetting you entirely. Tears form in her eyes as she looks her grandmother over. "You can't die," she whispers, quiet.

"Stop acting like a child, Margaret," Eleanor says, coughing. "The wards were disrupted by a human agent," she says, her voice quiet. She glances up at you, and you just stand there, uncertain what to do.

Margaret's fingers hurried work out a spell, and she presses her fingers to Eleanor's side, staunching the bleeding, but magic isn't good for healing. Eleanor doesn't look to be in good shape, her voice raspy as Margaret all-but-breaks down, begging her grandmother not to die on her. After a couple minutes, Eleanor passes out, though you and Margaret confirm that she still has a pulse.

Margaret wipes away her tears, then balls her fists. "Richard," she says, wheeling on you. "I'm not entirely rational at the moment, so I will defer to another. What do you think would be the wisest course of action?"

"We need to repair the wards," you say. "As long as they're open, God only knows how many murder spirits are going to flow in." Margaret gives a look at her grandmother's unconscious body. "We'll hide her," you say, after a moment. The two of you drag her into a closet, draping a blanket over her and hoping for the best.

Outside the mansion, things are quieter; you don't see a single spirit. You find the markings etched into the earth, stone and paint and other materials mixed together and imbued with power over weeks, months, even years. It takes less than a minute to find the place where the ward's been broken, dirt and cobblestone kicked up and scratched over, like somebody just stuck their foot in the earth and kicked, and kept doing so until the wards were completely ruined.

The two of you set to work, the dark of night hanging over you. Margaret does most of the heavy lifting, since she knows more about her family's wards than you do, but you offer some decent help, and no spirits interrupt you. When the warding is completed, the two of you sit together for a little bit, investing it with new magic, replacing some of what has bled out. You can feel the 'click' as the warding slides back into place, working once more, and the two of you rise, smiling.

Margaret looks into your eyes for a moment, glances around, then gets on her toes to kiss you on the lips, a quick peck. Her cheeks are a rosy hue as she pulls away, and her hand finds yours, holding it. "I hope you don't find that too forward, Mr. Caldwell," she says.

You catch sight of movement, out of the corner of your eye, and follow it for a moment; it's a human figure, crouched, approaching. You do your best not to let whoever it is realize you've seen them.

You lean into Margaret, pressing your forehead against hers, your eyes incredibly close. She looks at you, as best she can, and her lips purse. "Don't move," you whisper, quiet. She blinks, pausing. "Don't look now, but there's a person trying to sneak up on us." Margaret adjusts her weight, and her hand slips out of yours. "It's at your five o'clock."

You pull your head away from Margaret's, and she puts her hand on your chest, adopting the position for the fireball spell. You also bring your hand to the space between the two of you, as if you were grabbing her wrist, but instead simply cast a protective spell and push it into her. She breathes, quiet, and spins on your opponent, a ball of fire appearing in her hand. The moment she spins, the posture of the figure shifts, drawing itself upright. By the time the flame has illuminated her, Monique is standing tall, her hands on her pistol, currently pointed at the ground.

"Would you mind not pointing that at me?" Monique asks, sounding annoyed.

Margaret doesn't take her eyes off Monique, but she does shift uncertainly.

"A human tampered with the wards, not a spirit as you initially claimed." Margaret's stance shifts further, her hand moving to better lob the glob of fire that still remains in it. "And I'd point out that a spirit caught inside would have no interest in breaking them, at least not at the moment."

"They might want reinforcements," Monique says.

"I don't see any spirits out there," you note.

"If you didn't think there was the possibility of reinforcements, there'd be no point to restoring the wards," Monique says, testily.

"Put the gun down, Monique," you say. "Margaret's a bit touchy at the moment, and I'd hate for her to shoot you inadvertently."

Monique considers you, glancing from you to Margaret, and...

Do you plan on keeping this Quest going after the whole murder-mystery thing is done with?

Or let me guess, it was all a ruse to test our competence as a potential mate - no one has actually died, and our Waifu is slowly falling in love with our ingenuity and awesometude even knowing it's stemming from an (unknowingly on our part) fake situation.

...and brings her gun up on you and Margaret. As Margaret tosses the fireball at Monique, you grab her and pull her to the ground; Monique's shots go wide, Margaret's defensive spell helping her, and the flame melts into Monique's skin, burning her alive. She twitches and fights, and her skin melts away, revealing the spirit within. It shrieks, incoherently, as it burns, and Margaret coldly tosses a few additional fireballs at the burning form.

When it's dead, leaving behind just skin, clothes, and ectoplasm, she breaths out, turning to look at you. "Let's clear out the house."

She takes your hand, and her fingers lacing with yours, and you look through the house for further spirits. It seems that all of the ones remaining were killed already. With the murder more-or-less solved, life can return to normal. Help arrives after a couple days, when the lack of contact alerts some of the Montgomery family contacts. You mostly spend the time cuddling and flirting with your new fiancée.

Further investigations suggest that Monique was killed and replaced with a murder spirit at some point, well before your marriage meeting. You never find out quite when or how.

>EPILOGUE: SOME YEARS LATER

The front door opens, and you turn from where you're sitting, James cradled in your arms, to look at the entryway. Margaret walks into the house, hanging up her jacket, and you rise from your seat, walking over to kiss her. She appreciates the contact, return your kiss in kind, her tongue giving some exploratory lashes of your own mouth before she pulls away.

"Darling," she says, primly, "could you arrange for the nanny to watch James for an hour? I'd like for us to spend some time alone together." Her finger finds its place right under your chin, tempting you forward.

You nod, excitedly. "Yes, dear," you say, and practically rush off to hand your child off to the nanny.

When you return to your bedroom, you find Margaret sitting on the bed, glancing at a book. At your entrance, she looks up, smiling and putting away the book. "Lock the door, darling." You turn to do so, and when you turn back to your wife, she's lying prone on the bed, her head turned to one side to watch you. "Work was very stressful," she says. "Help?"

You sit astride her, your thumbs pressing into her shoulders, and she sighs contentedly as you massage her.

When you finish, you switch positions, you lying on the bed, her on top, her flat butt pressing against your groin, her fingers running along your chest, pushing your shirt up. Her tongue runs along her upper lip, hungry.

I certainly had fun.

Looks like we're happily married with our lady. We ever get to that 3 or 4 children mark Margaret was interested in?
>>
>>38921858
Thanks for running. So considering how insanely lucky we were with those 18 and two 20s is our luck magic going to pass on to our kids? I mean when shit was happening we were cash. Also did we get to be head of our family til it folded into Margaret's?
>>
Breaddy Gud, OP. Breddy Gud.
>>
>>38921915
You had your fourth child shortly after your seventh anniversary.

>>38921953
You became the head of your family, period. Her name is Margaret Caldwell now.
>>
>>38921858
Thanks for the threads, I liked them.

Were you disappointed that we didn't get down and investigate properly like in a mystery novel?
>>
>>38921997
Nah. It's more my fault than yours. Mysteries in quests are really hard, structurally.
>>
>>38921983
>head of your family
How goes our wife's statesmanship/worldly power stuff?

Also, are we more than a domesticated househusband? I'm perfectly fine with that if we are though.
>>
>>38922011
what type of quests can we expect in the future?
>>
>>38922011
I know those feels. Horror is tough to get across too. It's damn near impossible to generate a sense of suspense.
>>
>>38922011
So did we ever get good with our magic? Margaret is probably an archmage but did we at least get good enough to bs our way out of most things with our luck?
>>
>>38922040
I'm planning on running three long-term quests and one rotating slot for one-shots.

Long term quests:
Dheljos - a science fantasy adventure story featuring a thief protagonist with magical powers living in a post-apocalyptic high tech world. Will be run on /tg/, hopefully.
San Josafat - a superhero story featuring an impoverished, freshly triggered cape in the setting of Worm. Planned to run on Anonkun.
[Untitled] - some kind of monster trainer quest (magic spirits for the monsters) where the MC is a divinely empowered messianic figure. It was crowdsourced concept so it's kind of a clusterfuck. I have some ideas on how to move forward with it.

>>38922048
You're decent. At thirty, you wind up somewhere around Margaret's skill level at twenty.

>>38922033
>How goes our wife's statesmanship/worldly power stuff?
Going well.

>Also, are we more than a domesticated househusband?
You manage the family finances. Pretty househusband-y, though, yes.

Given our Magic I imagine we'd be ideal for that.

The quests look good, any ideas where you're going to run the last one? Also will you do more one shots/ small parters?
>>
>>38922206
No plans for continuing the monster hearts quest?

I've heard Worm mentioned here and there, but I have no idea what it is. Google insists on showing me actual worms when I ask. halp, pls.

Planning on using a slot for one-shots.

Not in the immediate future, no.

she may be plain but she seems to have quite the sexual appetite and is very intelligent. I bet our character gets quite the good dicking.
