"Ladies?"
"Ladies."
"This marriage thing isn't fer real you know, we just doin this fer the ceremony. I mean-"

That doesn't change the gaze of the four girls. Their eyes are still desperately waiting an answer.

You are Jack Albator, doomed seafarer, in way over his head, and also maybe a little too charming. You were recently told about a most clever scheme to take back a country by marrying a princess to her hero. This would in turn let her take the throne because she would technically be of 'marrying' age if she marries while she's young, which gets rid of some bad elements that have had her imprisoned specifically so she couldn't take the the throne.

It's all very complicated, you're still all for kidnapping her and running for the hills.
But, at the very least, there's no harm in trying it. It's perfectly reversible, and there's still nothing stopping you from kidnapping. All in all, it's worth at least one try.

Tuile had the great idea of having a decoy wedding that comes before the actual wedding. One where you and a Lass would fake-marry in order to make it seem as if that was the main event. It's come onto one peculiar snag.

"Lasses! Please! Aye only need to marry one for this!"

Madeleine's tail slithers in the moonlight, closing the ring holder.
"Then why don't you choose someone, Jack?"

"Yeah Jack." Another voice rings out from the girls who have surrounded you. "Why don't you pick the girl you're gonna marry?"
Damn you, Camille.

>"Okay, we're gonna do this the right way, with straws!"
>Erm, Tuile! You wanted to do this right? This'll be quick and easy!
>M-Madeleine! You're a loyal shiphand, and a good cook to boot!
>Atsuko! It'll definitely make explaining why we sleep in the same room easier!
>Yuuki! I always admired how much better ye were at this hero thing than I was!
>Hey Camille, ye think this is funny? Aye'll take you instead!
>Ferget it, it's for fun right? I'll just marry all of you!

Huh, I actually am in time to post for once?

Yuuki better at heroing than us?

>>
>>38950173
Does she even still have them though? There was no mention of any there when she showed the ring

>>38950215
Well, wouldn't having them still help with distracting then? I mean, Madeleine already seems like a rare girl in these lands, if her being the lone snake lass seen yet is an indication. So it seems more exotic. Eye catching if you would.
>>
>>38950312
Honestly, I like Tulie and Madelein here. I don't think asking for both would work though...
>>
>>38950201

>>

I'm giving this vote extra time on purpose. No rush today!

I'll give it maybe 10 minutes more
>>

You put your hand forward and gently stroke the chestnut colored hair of the girl who came up with this idea.

"Lass.." You say, trying to lessen the blow "You know this isn't for real, right? I'm glad ye went and got lots of candidates , but ye didn't need to go through all of this."

Her gaze turns downward "I-I know that. I just.."
Your fingers run through her hair, gently rubbing at the tips of her ears.
"It's okay Tuile." You smile, "You can be my bride."

She nearly drops her tiny ring. You neatly catch it before it falls off into the mud and results in a mass panic trying to find it.

"Tuile, Madeleine, Atsuko, Yuuki." You take the tiny ring and slip it onto Tuile's finger. "You're all going to make wonderful brides someday."

Yuuki blushes intensely and immediately looks the opposite direction, Atsuko emits a huff and closes her ring box. Madeleine retracts her tail and snatches her ring from the end of it.
"I'm glad that was fast, at least." Atsuko dusts her hands off.
"I-I'm really happy for you two!" Yuuki smiles in that manner that only she can.

"Hmph." Madeleine crosses her arms.
"Eh?" You look at her with confusion, "Madeleine, ye not need to be upset, it's-"

She laughs, "I know, I know. Not for real." She giggles. "But I think it's a little premature to say who the bride will be."

"Err." You realize this might be trouble. "It's really not that-"
"No no, it's fine!" She waves you off. "I was just saying, it hasn't happened yet. That's all." She smiles.

She turns and slithers away, "Ladies, you can keep the rings. They'll really look good on you in the future."

Tuile doesn't even constrain herself, she jumps forward and wraps her arms around your waist.
"Jack Jack Jack! This is gonna be so great! I can't believe this is happening!"
"Err." You put your hand up to her nose. "Pretend, Lass. It's pretend-happening."
She bluses profusely, "Oh! Right. right."

Gently, she caresses the ring on her finger as she walks back to her wagon.

You dust off your hands as you admire your remarkable ability to escape from situations that should normally be fatal.

That was close.

You remember when your ship was docked at one of the roughest towns you could remember. The entire time when you stepped off the gangplank, you could hear musket shots in the distance. Several times a musketball would crack straight by your head, shot by an unknown assailant.

Your heart was not pounding as furiously then as it is right now.
You seriously feel like you need to sit down for a few minutes, maybe hours, or perhaps days. You almost trip over yourself and collapse into the mud before Cody comes by and rights you.

"'Hold up Jack." He grabs you by the shoulder. "You ain't sleeping yet."

He walks with you a little ways before turning around and making sure no one can hear him.
"That was damn smooth, partner."
"Aye try."
"Tsh." He lets you go to walk on your own, "Damn smooth but dangerous as hell. Maybe you really do need a woman to keep you in line."

"Ayyye don't think I'll be doin' that yet." You reach for the flask in your pocket, "What's new?"

"Was gonna go with Yuuki and the maid, try to explain to the girls what is happenin' tomorrow. You interested in comin' along?"

"Sure, fine." You say, taking another drink from your flask. "Anything is fine to get me the hell out of here."
"I hear that. "

Yuuki is waiting just up the road with the head maid. She appears to be completely unphased with the horribly awkward situation that just transpired and is instead completely focused on her mission.

Of course, her mission this time is far more awkward than merely asking to marry you. Which may seem a little embarrassing, it's still something that a grown woman should be asking a man. This time her job is to do something that you're not sure you should leave entirely to her.

You're going to explain to the lasses what exactly they're doing tomorrow, what your plans are, and most awkwardly; what getting married means.

You take another drink from your flask. Yuuki turns to look at you.

"So, how should I go about this?"

>"Why're ye asking me?"
>"I dunno, just.. err.. don't be too graphic."
>"Lay it on them straight. Keepin' secrets doesn't help anyone here."

"Yar Yuuki, the way I see it all ye have to do is not be too graphic."
"Graphic?" She seems confused by the way you worded that.

"Yar, Don't give 'em the details of what married couples would actually DO. I mean."

"Oh." She thinks about what you said for a minute, "I don't think they would understand even if I told them."
"True that might be Lass, but don't risk it. The last thing we want to do is give either of them cold feet. Aye don't want them thinking that this is a bigger deal than it actually is."

Thinking back on it, their maybe-real wedding is probably less legitimate than YOUR phony wedding. So it's not like it's something you have to worry about too much.

Yuuki picks up the head maid gently and leaps toward the Princess' window, Cody and you follow suit while the guards have their attention turned elsewhere.

- -

You don't like what you see in this little girl's room. It really does look like she's been neglected.
You've heard of nobility before starving their next of kin in order to buy time for themselves in power. It's not really something you think is very widespread, because someone can only be old for so long.
But then you realize something: If what Atsuko told you some time back is accurate, people live much longer here than they do back home.
Still, it's a cruel thing to do to a child. You can never say that you understand how the rich think. Usually you only get to see them when they've been parted with their valuables.

The room is a disaster. While it's clear that she's at least been fed, you're not entirely sure how much contact she has had in her life. In her tiny bed, with a much-more lively looking hero draped over her, are two tiny eyes glaring at you from the darkness. They peer at you as if you're not anything she's ever seen before.

She tries to sit up, but is being weighed down by tight grip of the tan-skinned hero who is fast asleep.

She manages to lift her head up, even with the pair of arms around her neck, as the head maid approaches her.

"Ms. Clair?" She gently slumps back into the pillow, "Why are you here? Did you bring Kayda back?"

The head maid sits down on the bed, gently stroking her hair.
"No sweetie, you have these three here to thank for that. Go on, say thank you."
"T-thanks." She seems to slink down into the blankets more and more. She doesn't seem to appreciate the extra attention.

Yuuki steps forward, sitting on the bed herself.
"It's good to meet you, I'm Yuuki, what's your name?"
"Greta.." She seems to whisper, "Is it okay for you to be in here? I thought Ms. Clair said-"

"It's fine." The head maid seems to smile in the darkness.

Yuuki points to the unconscious hero still gripping onto the princess, "What did you say her name was? We've been good friends ever since I met her."
"It's Kayda." She hugs the hero back tightly, "Her name is really long, so she told me to just call her that."

"That's fine, it's a cute name." Yuuki moves her hand silently through her hair. "Do you know why we're here?"
"Nnn." She slinks into the blankets again.

"You and Kayda are gonna be married tomorrow and we're here to help out. You know what that means?"
"Mm nn."

"It means you get to sleep in the same bed, every night!" Yuuki smiles.
"Um.. really?"
"It does! And you'll be friends! Best friends forever!"

Errr.

Greta seems confused, "But she's already my best friend and we sleep in the same bed, what's different?"

Not to mention the more relevant fact that camille isn't even interested in him so it's not even NTR.

I'm all for taking Camille.

Who would be able to send a hero away if they don't want to, anyway?

Camille wasn't interested in Jack either until recently, there's nothing preventing Aligot from hardening up a bit and catching her eye.

Look, what we need to do is teach the lad mettle. By showing him the proper technique for touching fluffy tails. Because that's clearly a part of why all the ladies are swooning for Jack.

Or just stop playing matchmaker for Aligot, we tried to help him already and we made absolutely zero progress.

Who knows, maybe he grows some guts if we start taking Camille away from him. Fuck no, he has the spine of a fucking slug, he would just go cry somewhere and be passive aggressive towards us.

Anyways, I really like Camille because she appears to be the most normal of the girls.
>>
So how long can people live in this world anyway?
>>
>>38956745
Maybe we should romance him in front of the girls. That might make him grow a spine.

Nah, this seems a little weird where it's going, and you're not going to lie that you're more than a little uncomfortable. It's still something that you trust Yuuki can do with the utmost confidence. It's just something she has to work into, that's all.

Gently you reach into your coatpocket and pull out your reserve. It's good to have this sort of thing around when you want to keep yourself from saying something silly.

Yuuki, however, doesn't let up. She persists with her reasoning.
"Well, you see." She stops and thinks about it for a moment. "This isn't just being a friend friend, this is being a special friend. When you're married, you're with that special friend forever. No one can take them away from you."

Her eyes perk up at that,
"Really? No one?"
"Yep! She'll be with you forever!"

That's a good job, Yuuki.
"But.. Are you saying she wouldn't be with me forever otherwise? Why?!"

Uh oh.
"No no! That's not what I'm saying. It's just-" Yuuki thinks about her words carefully.
You take another drink.
"-It's just that you two would be connected by an inseparable bond."
"We're not now? She's my hero!"
"No it's just-"

You take another drink, but stop yourself when you think of something.
"Ey little lass, If ye get married to her, the mean men can't send her away anymore."

THAT gets her attention.
"R-really? Not even Dad?!"
"Nope!" Yuuki happily exclaims. "She's yours forever, so he couldn't tell her to do that!"

"That's-!"

She picks up her hero and leans her upright. You can tell she looks almost as good as new.
"We'll do it! We'll get married! Where do we start!?"
"Tomorrow!" The head maid replies, with a smile.

"I can't wait! Can you?"
"Nnngnmn" Is all that Kayda replies with.

>Our work here is done.

Everyone, I was REALLY HOPING TO GET TO THE WEDDING TODAY.

But sadly, connection issues have plagued me all night. Not having stable internet sucks. We'll have to do the wedding next thread, that I hope to start early.

A couple more updates before I call it a night, though.
>>
>>38956809
Maybe not normal, but realistic or human.

She has flaws. The others don't really, they feel more like your usual troupe of anime characters.

I don't know, maybe it's because I'm an asshole and just want to spite Aligot for being such a goddamn betamax.
>>
>>38956796
Don't think it was ever specified in the series. We know that Valery and Adele were old enough to have seen their grandchildren grow up before sealing themselves and they still look young, so probably quite a bit longer than normal humans.
Those who were doused in demon blood might as well have an infinite lifespan, though.

Do we know if heroes get increased lifespan along with everything else?
>>
>>38956796
It depends. S1 established a lifespan of several hundred years for really strong people.

Now it's complicated. And depends on a lot of things. I think we had the first canon death in S3 on someone who wasn't any older than 16.
>>
>>38956821
>Maybe the head maid is a better person to ask in private.

Ask if she think Greta and the hero will be alright with the marriage thing in the long term.

>Then, go to sleep
>>
Why risk bringing up bad memories or something that could change the current situation?

Go play with the maids ears, go back to the rest of the crew for some fluffy tail touching, drinking, and whatever else Jack likes to kill time doing.
>>
>>38956894
It's really unclear. Adele seems to be immortal for what it's worth. But she was in stasis for several hundred years.
>>
>>38956922
That's exactly why I voted for playing with head maids ears.
>>
>>38956925
>>38956904

>>
>>38956973

I'm pretty sure the Pastillage Princess was way over 20 at that point, since it was stated that they spent many years traveling together. It was long enough for Brioche to grow up (which was implied to have taken a long time).
>>
>>38956973
He will. There's some S3 stuff that really doesn't apply to him or anyone in his crew, so that's the future he has to look forward to.

I'm still wondering if I shouldn't try to incorporate some more S3 stuff.

You walk over to the bed and sit down next to the head maid. This bed is getting kind of crowded now.
"Aye just have one question." You put your hand on the maid's shoulder. "Why did she get a hero in the first place?"

"That's.." The head maid stopped.
Greta, on the other hand, didn't.

"Daddy gave her to me!"
"Gave 'er to ye?"

"Yep! He had some scrolls and I asked if I could have one and he said yes. That's how I got Kayda!"

The head maid continues, "Her father is the one who convinced all the nations to get a hero. It's.. puzzling to me why he did that considering that he just wanted one for himself."

Huh, that is puzzling. Maybe he just didn't want people suspecting him? He sure seemed to throw away his hero the first opportunity he got. Maybe he had something else in mind?

"Also Jack, you'll be a married man tomorrow. Don't you think you should show some restraint?"

You look again, and notice that your hand on her shoulder has slowly wandered up to her scalp, and it's currently gently folding the soft flesh of her ears back and forth. The tiny fuzz on the outset almost tickles the pads of your fingers.

"Nah." you say, almost bluntly.

- -

Ugh. Maybe you dipped a little too hard into the reserve flask.
Cody and Yuuki stayed behind to help with preparations. They agreed that you should get some sleep since you'll be the 'star' attraction tomorrow. Your bride is already likely sleeping.

It's just as well. You don't really think you can take any more of this today. You just want to embrace sleep and think of this in the morning.

You step inside your wagon and almost immediately flop into the cushions. You see Keiko's green puff of fur stir slightly, as well as a slightly larger mass of fur stir in its sleep.

"Night Atsuko."
"Mm. Night Honey."

'Honey'?

Surely you heard that wrong.

"I mean-" The blonde ball of fluff cuts itself off, "Jack. Good night Jack."

You're wondering if this day isn't going to haunt you.

>>38957802
Airships in this quest are different from airships in the show, it's the one S2/S3 thing that I didn't include because I forgot about it.

In the show, they fly by literally having four birds carry a platform. If I had remembered months ago that this was how they flew, I would have made it that way.

As it stands, airships can travel outside the barrier because it uses an animal for the airfold. The explanation I was going to have is that there's a giant moth flying around inside of it, or perhaps magic anti-gravity dust. but I never got to the specifics of it when they were being introduced. So right now it's just "it just works and the function of how it works will never come back to haunt you because I never properly introduced it."

Besides, I don't think jack would have really liked piloting a giant platform with birds. I think he wants a ship proper.
>>
>>38957954
And I pray for that being the case every thread.
>>
>>38957938
I shouldn't be surprised it's French, I forgot a lot of names in the show are. Thanks for reminding me
>>
>>38957902
Just like the french word. It's the name of a dessert.

It's something I'm not sure a lot of people picked up on. Besides the heroes, I tried to make every character in the quest have food in some part of their name, just like the show. So if something seems hard to pronounce, you can probably google it and find what food I took it from.

>>38957928
Of course, that's why we're having wedding shenanigans.

>>38957892
Well who knows, maybe that won't be necessary forever. My lips are sealed.
>>
>>38958003
>>38957992
And adding onto this. I took the food names from the region that the kingdoms are based on in accordance to the show.

Biscotti has french names.
Gallete has both french and some german names.
Brushetta (Not in the show, replaced with 'Halver' in the show) is based on italian (the show went with English names for Halver)
Konditorei is Austrian so far.

I'll leave the other one that wasn't visited up to interpretation.
>>
Honestly I'm neutral to Atsuko.
>>
>>38957758
It's funny because we really don't have a choice. Atsuko is our summoner so she goes where we go, unless we want to make repeated trips back home.
>>
>>38957957
Well long as we can guarantee we can actually use an airship outside.
...We're gonna need some magic tricks to make sure we can defend the whole thing, though.
