You don't like these sorts of formal gatherings- bunch of glorified historical reenacters sitting around in the middle of the desert eating sand-caked BBQ and drinking lukewarm soda and beer is one thing, but this place has a thirty foot buffet and its centerpiece is an ice sculpture. Of a Sherman.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank “Black Jack” and you're a bit uncomfortable with this level of decadence. Not so much the buffet- you'll get to that in a bit- but the ice sculpture and the monkeysuits moving through the crowd delivering drinks and appetizers- and those are finger sandwiches shaped like casemated tank destroyers.

The good news is that there's a lot of familiar faces- in fact more tank commanders in one place than you've probably seen in your life- Commanders from across the continent. Traveling in tanking is difficult and expensive- you see East Coast commanders fairly rarely. And then there's a few you don't even recognize.

And you still haven't the foggiest idea why you're here.

>Pick a group of old friends- might as well make the best of this.

A rebuttal to BlackJack’s earlier post on American Tankery: Yes, the American TDs of WWII were open topped, but the Hellcat wasn’t the only one that got a top made for it during the war: they weren’t just made by the US govt. Earlier in the quest, you have Erwin asking Russells to look into some new equipment based on a magazine.
‘Well..." Erwin says, glancing down at Caesar before looking back up at you. "We've been looking into some of the historical modifications..." She ducks down into the hull before bringing up a glossy magazine that featured a long article about various Senshado-legal modifications. "That idea of using foliage and camo netting was just the start!"’1
Well, I’ve found some M10s and M36s with covered/armored roofs. These are field modifications by US troops, not standard issue, nor Korea/post-WWII equipment. Photos of these can be found in Armored Victory 1945, pages 144, 145, 397, for the M102. Page 356 has a photo of a modified M36, and I located recorded video footage of a .3
Therefore, given the allowance of field modifications in Senshado, the ubiquity of field modifications on American armor, the previously stated usage of mostly locally available tanks, and the extensive number of M18, M10, and M36 Tank destroyers produced, I propose that these battle-hardened, finely tuned vehicles be allowed in both Senshado and Tankery, provided they use some form of enclosed roof similar to the ones used in the Second World War for the safety of the crew.

3Link: http://www.criticalpast.com/video/65675029072_United-States-Army-convoy_townsmen-gather_armored-vehicles_M4-Sherman-tanks Name’s a bit misleading, but 0:40 on has the M36 with operable roof.

We can make these roof shell-proof, with thicker steel (6mm like on I-Go should do it), but in turn even a glancing hit will count as legitimate hit.

These roof main purpose is to protect the crew, not necessarily count as proper 'armor'.

And its only allowed on these TD.

And with the criteria for knocking out a tank being 'does it penetrate', it's a issue that the crew has to work around, without being hamstrung. I like it, I like it alot. Blackjack does have final say though. Hopefully, this cool kitty'll come out to play.

You two bring up a good point with thickness: I couldn't find anything that said how thick the cover was. It could have been 6mms, it could have been more, it could have been less. Right now, we don't know.
>>38961921
See above. I don't think such a statistic exists, given each roof made was not exactly factory stamped.
>>
>>38961921
Given the lack of standardization with field modifications during the War, I think such a number will have to come from our end of things. 6mm sounds like a good start.
>>
As you do what a good tank commander does and search your surroundings, you immediately see across to a grave looking teen about your age. He looks as though he's having about as much fun as you are- maybe you can both be sullen and withdrawn.

You turn to Miho and begin to let her know your intentions when you realize she's already broken formation and is busy introducing herself to a group of tankers- You recognize Kitty, the other Panther commander in the US besides and a few East Coast commanders.

You shrug and move towards the bored looking stranger. You grab a plate of finger sandwiches from a surprised weighter. “Don't think I've seen you before.”

He over at you, a bit surprised. “Nyet- I think you have not.” He says with a pretty rough Russian accent, surprising you in turn. He puts out a hand. “Kazimir Petrov.”

You shake it. “Russells.” You introduce politely with a nod.

>>
>>38962168

Yep. Two actively tanking panthers in the US- Kitty and Joey. Joey's from New York, Kitty's based out of Colorado.

A third was recently released by the Army from one of their collections.
>>
>>38962387
And speaking of 'released', Lee mentioned before “Fort Benning released another T29...”, what do you mean by that? Is it like a Rental, where you have to return it, Lend-Lease where you can use now then either return it or pay up, or is the vehicle simply put up to sale to a select interested party? I ask since that would explain how the Nishizumi family gets a Maus, along with their ultra-rare lineup of German tanks lie Panthers, Elephants, Tiger IIs, an JagdTigers, outside of fresh-manufactured vehicles: They’re, mostly, rentals. Kubinka’s going to want their one-of-a-kind tank back.
>>
>>38962377
No scholar, PBR said something about Hellcats getting a conversion with covered turrets, to quote,
>It was actruly designed and built during the war in time for it to be deployed to Germany, including a full cover that protected the Hellcat from small arms. Was not used because of reasons.

>It could have been mass produced. It wasnt.

> A study was completed in August 1944 and a supplementary kit of armor (including top cover) was designed and produced that did not adversely effect mobility, but there was no production to refit vehicles in service.

>two active tanking panthers.

>>
>>38962410

Sort of like a long-term lease. The idea is that the team will use the tank in senshado and in return the Army has someone who can restore and maintain the machine.

In one of my docs I actually have the program named out in detail- "Living History". Basically as long as a tank is out there doing senshado its going to be well-looked after, this is why they release even rare tanks.

As long as there's a team out there keeping it in fighting condition, a tank isn't going to be rusting away in some open-air exhibit or as part of some memorial.

“From Belarus.” He says. “I get letter and promise of money.” He shrugs. “Close to winter, anyway. Could, how you say... Catch some rays?” He says with smile. “Not as much swimwear as I thought.”

“Yeah, that's L.A.” You say, giving him a pat on the shoulder. “Well, at least there's food.” You take another bite of sandwich before chewing it down. “So, what's your ride?” You ask- perhaps the most important and defining question you can ask a fellow tanker.

“My tank?” He says. “I have T-44. 85mm gun.” He says with pride, pulling out his phone to show you its picture. “You?”

You pull out your phone. “M26 Pershing.” You say, showing him Black Jack's picture.

“Not bad.” He says nodding. “That's not M3 gun?” He guesses. “Belgian crews- they have M26s with M3- have trouble with our armor.” He shakes his head. “Something bigger?”

Ok, here's the text related to Euro tanks that I could pull from the archives. Attached is the first thing on the RPG mechanics the guy was going for. If he got to making mechanics for politics, it didn't get on to Archive.moe.

Euro tanks: I actually had stuff laid out for a GuP set in Europe with brigade strength teams. Then I ran into the T-54 problem. Well, it's simple really. The T-54 (Obj 137) prototype was built in July 1945, and since the cutoff is V-J instead of V-E day, they qualify for entry into Tankwondo. With 200mm frontal turret, 120mm @ 30 deg frontal hull, they're frontally impenetrable by either the 7.5 L/70 or OQF 17 either. Their guns ain't all that great since BR-412 is APHE, which leads to them not being able to kill each other, but fully capable of knocking out anything else. And they made... what, 100,000 of the things? Much cheaper to find a working hull for a -54 than a M36B1 conversion for a M4 Sherman.

Yeah I think the political shit was said in the IRC or over skype

Basically everyone tries to abuse the rules to get the very best tanks they can as far late war as possible, leaving the less rich schools in the dust with chaffees and shermans and etc

So there's loads of powergaming among the rich schools and politicking as they try to keep their tanks legal while making the new shit the other schools have illegal

You shrug. “T54- latewar upgrade of the T15.” You say casually. “T15's were known to shoot through Jagdpanzers.” You make a whistling noise. “In one end and out the other.”

Realization dawns. “Oh! You! I know you- You're Black Jack. Kill King Tiger in fight.” He smiles. “Watched that match- great fun to watch fascist box tank humiliation.” He leans in. “Won bet on that fight.”

“You're welcome.” You reply courteously. “So, Belarus? That's in the ETO?” You say. European tanking was the third side of tanking in the world- While Americans dueled one-on-one and the Asians kept to squad-size battles, the Europeans had gone completely insane.

Their battles were massive, week-long affairs with entire groups of schools cooperating into brigade-strength campaigns against each other. That's, of course, what happens when tanking springs up with the largest supply of military-surplus tanks the world has ever seen.

“Da.” He says, nodding. “Was okay- problem is too many people, too much strategy. Sometimes you take this village and then never see enemy tank, sometimes they assault for three days until you run out of tank rounds for gun and knocked out because commander is make mistake.” He throws his head back and groans. “And the politics... This tank fine, that tank nyet.”

“Politics?” You say, stopping mid-chew. That is a word you don't normally hear with regards to tanking.

“Da...” Kasimir responds. “This tank okay- use. That tank overpowered- no use.” He shrugs and sighs. “All just meant to give their own schools best chance- not by training or have good commanders. Just want to...” He thinks for a word for a second. “Neuter? ...other teams.”

You blink. The fast rule in American and, as far as you can tell, Japan is anything designed before VJ Day. Only things that really need any discussion are the prototypes- Black Jack had gotten through with documentation that the gun design and tank both predated the end of the war- the T54 was, for all intents and purposes the same thing as the earlier T15 gun on the famous T26E1-1, anyway. “That's dumb.” You say flatly.

“Is dumb.” He replies. “That's why I leave- much more freedom now. Not worry about whether tank can even use in next battle. And best opponents in world...” He says.

“So you're fighting in America, then?” You ask. Wouldn't be the first foreign crew to try their luck.

“Nyet, Commander.” He says. “Fight in Japan now. Pravda Highschool.” He grins at you. “Why surprised?”
