Bombs.

Along with guns, they are another weapon you really don't like. They're indiscriminate and messy, and personally when you kill someone you like to be able to say 'I killed them' and know that there isn't a chance of being wrong. Responsibility is part of it, yes, but mostly it's just that bombs are unpredictable. Supposedly someone who is good at them can make them do what they want, but you're not one of those.

Disarming bombs, on the other hand, is something you're good at by nature. That doesn't mean you can't die from one – shrapnel and concussion will still turn you into a wall decoration. Circling the one on the coffee table, you're not really sure what category of stupidity this falls under.

“Any clue as to the sender?” The 'seals' are cheap paper talismans you can buy at most joke stores. Cardboard outside. There's no liquids in it, but you wouldn't be able to sense mercury since it's a metal. The scent of C4 is unmistakable, so it's not a standard home-made bomb.

“They had a child deliver it to the door, given money by 'a man'. He didn't recognize any photos but said the man was 'Western'. I have Yui-chan running electronic interference outside, so no signals in or out; everyone is in Er Yin-sensei's room.” Hence why she didn't call you right away. “Obviously no mercury switches either. No return address, no way for me to see anything inside. Seals aren't real but it has a metal sheeting inside the cardboard.”

Leaning close you take a slow, deep scent of the device. Bamboo, C4, ozone, plastics. A cell phone or a electronic device of some sort. Definitely meant to take out Akari-niji-chan; wooden shrapnel would tear her up as much as the metal would do everyone else. Kiki-hime is probably the only person the bomb wouldn't kill. But that doesn't mean it's a real bomb either. Evacuating everyone would be the standard operating procedure for humans dealing with an explosive device. So snatch-and-run is probably the idea. Too bad you couldn't fake your deaths in the explosion, that would be a nice security buffer.

You really don't like bombs.

[] Evacuate everyone anyways, to the gym downstairs.
[] Have the landlord collect it – her extra security is not working well.
[] Have the folks outside join everyone in the room and make layer of protection for the wounded and weak.
[] Have Kiku-chan destroy it utterly for safety's sake.
[] Take it elsewhere and disarm it yourself.

[+] Prep secondary plans.

Akari is sitting at the breakfast nook, watching you placidly as you study what you can of the device. Shoko and Yuuhi-chan are having a quiet but heated discussion on the back porch, and as usual, Yuuhi-chan is in panic mode, worried and babbling even though Shoko is attempting to calm her down.

“Incidentally, this bomb is designed with our weaknesses in mind. Yours, at the very least, Akari-niji-chan. Wood shrapnel as well as metal. I don't think they expected anyone to be able to disarm it.” That catches your niji-chan's attention. “I'll take it somewhere else. Probably into a Barrier. Have the others come in and let everyone out of the room five minutes after I've gone – just in case they try something stupid.”

“Yes, aniki. I think Kiki-hime would be upset if you did take it elsewhere, you know.”

You sigh. “Yes, but disarming it gives me information, and if I do it here, there's no telling how much damage it might do if it goes off. At least in a Barrier I'll be able to protect myself much better. I could probably submerge it too.” You sigh, and remove some of the extra belts and sashes your outfit possesses. “Also, Ryuu Wakaba is dead, along with most of her team. I think the Void Triplet is the last one left off of her entire team, and her 'sisters' are dead. That's going to be pretty traumatic for her.”
>>
>>39029496
The triplets – not actually triplets but similar enough in nature and close enough in teamwork that they may as well have been triplets – were responsible for crafting the tree-spirit spying spell and assisting your cousin in some extremely nefarious shit. The Wood oni-child was part of your cousin's team, and not under Wakaba's command. “Oh, right, we have four sorcerers to interrogate too.”

“Aniki, we're running out of room.” She's amused by that, and is smiling though.

“Yeah, I know. I think I may just take over the gym and turn it into a prison.” You walk over to the door to the back porch, planning on having everyone make a defense in the room while you take the bomb away. Maybe Kiku-chan should join you just in case.

“Aniki!” You glance at Akari, who is turning rather red.

[X] Time to get answers, take names, and tease the Akari.

You smile, and walk over to Akari-niji-chan, a brush of wind closing the curtains to the back porch so that you and Akari are obscured. You're pretty sure part of it has to do with the fact your dressed as the tiger-warrior Sun Jian, of course, but then again she and Yui-niji-chan do like their ribbons.

Wrapping the end of the two belts around your hand as you drop the sashes on the seat you pass by, you step closer to your Stone dragonette and wrap the belts about her wrists lightly, your tail sliding around hers slowly and intimately. Her blush increases and she looks down shyly. “Oh ho, so you would like me to be your bad cop? Or perhaps your jailer?”

She fidgets slightly, her hands twisting in the binding as she sneaks a furtive glance at your gold and black armor.

You lean close, turning your head so you can whisper directly into her ear. “Or would you prefer I have a matching set of manacles made for you when I have Yui-niji-chan's made, A-kar-ri-chaaan?” She makes a high pitched whimper in her throat and twists her hands again, more, you suspect, to feel the soft silk belts against her wrist than to try and escape. Winding your tail about her, you let your lips trace the edges of her ear. “Well, Akari-niji-chan?”

“....yes, aniki....”

“Yes what, Akari-niji-chan?” You tug her hands slowly down to the edge of the seat, and she shifts slightly, letting her arms press her small breasts together under her black sailor's uniform. Solely for your benefit, you know, but it does work wonders!

“Yes, I would like those things,” she whispers softly.

You give her forehead a light kiss and she shivers involuntarily. You give her tail a slow, firm squeeze as you step back slowly, leaving her hands bound by the belts. “Both things, huh? Ecchi Stone dragonette!” you accuse lightly as you sigh and walk over to the bomb. “I'm going to be interrogating the sorcerers who were killing cat youkai and the nogitsune-clan. They're Kaga, but they're young, and I'll be in a Barrier but it may take some time. Get the others in the room, make a living wall of oni-children and yourself and I'll send Yui-niji-chan back when I'm in the Barrier.”

“H-hai aniki....” Her breathless words make you glance back; her eyes don't even lift to meet yours. You look down at your tail. Apparently having a tail does interesting things to the way the leotard sits, since the armor splits. Hentai dragon, as Kiku-chan would say in this case.

“And bring out the other prisoners. I'll take them too.” You flick a bead of water at her and she instinctively blocks it with her sleeve and slides off the stool, blushing. She does ~Nowhere~ the belts though. “While I'm gone, have everyone pack day....no, overnight bags. And swimsuits. We need to be gone from here for a while.” You consider, and take a deep breath. “Draft and send an invitation to tea to the Mill Pond Demon too. Don't deliver it. See if you can make up an appropriate menu, and tell him it will be for three.”

“Okay.”

You hear her speaking quietly to the others out of the cracked door, and you immediately hear Yuuhi-chan's protestation that she should remain with you – Kiki-hime said so, and aniki agreed.

Oh, heaven.

[X] I'll be taking Kiku-chan.
[X] ….I'll take someone along, but this is different.
[X] I'm disarming a BOMB, you know!

“It's a bomb, Yuuhi-chan. You can't protect me while I disarm it.” you turn and look at the agitated nogitsune-child, who is looking somewhat desperate. “If I was going to take someone, it would be Yui-niji-chan, since she can deal with electronics and lightning, but that would deprive Er Yin-sensei of a healer. Since I can't take her it will have to be Kiku-chan, because she can destroy the bomb utterly without causing it to explode.” There is little that is more destructive than a fire dragonette, but there are scales and methods of even that kind of destructive power.

“Kiki-hime wouldn't fucking approve, Ryukusa-sama,” Shoko comments, but she's looking at Yuuhi-chan from behind as she says it.

Taking her suggestion, you point out the obvious. “This is one of those situations where Kiki-hime's wants are out of the question. This is my duty, and no one can interfere, no matter how much they care about my well being.” Crossing your arms, you look at Shoko-san seriously, but it's Yuuhi-chan the words are meant for, and Shoko knows it. “I am her shinobi – this is a case of me doing things to protect her, and no one can interfere. I'm sorry, that's the way it is.”

“But you could DIE!” yelps Yuuhi-chan. “If that happens, what will happen to the others like me, what will happen to us, what will happen to your family!?” The look on her face is odd. Not unusual, no, she's agitated, but there's another look, a different look. She's upset by the idea of you dying, obviously, but she wasn't like this when you were going into battle.

[X] Water Eyes, see what's going on there.
[X] Walk over and pet the poor girl, calm her down.
[X] ….ask her what's really wrong.

You walk around the couch and walk over to Yuuhi-chan, who clutches her nodachi like a lifeline. As you do so, you open your Water Eyes and study her carefully. Facing off against a Stone dragonette-turned noppera-bo didn't have her this upset at your potential death; the chances of this killing you are even more slim, yet she's nearly panicked beyond reason.

Her loyalty and her dedication haven't changed significantly, either for better or worse, which only makes sense, but her fear is an irrational, mindlessly potent fear that is eating at her self discipline. It's not the idea of you dying, or the idea of you not taking her, as much as it is her fear of the bomb killing you....her fear of the bomb itself. The idea of bomb, in her mind, is associated with destruction of soul as well as body, and her concept of a bomb's destructive power is way out of proportion to the reality of it.

In fact, you suspect it might even be a phobic level of reaction, not simply fear. Irrational, insane levels of fear.

A fear with a basis in reality? Is she that old? She doesn't seem that old....no, she has to be old enough for that, Horobi died at least two hundred years ago. And if so, then her phobia is more understandable. Anyone who lived through what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been traumatized....and Yuuhi-chan is a sensitive girl, a nervous sort of person. Shoko-san seems unaware of this issue; Yuuhi-chan probably hasn't demonstrated her phobia publicly before. Asking her what's really wrong would be redundant in this particular situation, and probably shaming as well, so you don't bother.

“Yuuhi-chan,” you murmur softly, your hand sliding along her thick hair as you close your Water Eyes. “It will be all right, Yuuhi-chan. I promise that nothing bad will happen to me. I have many things to take care of.” She is shaking, not even the petting calming her enough to relax. She looks into your eyes, her crimson ones wide with fright and worry. “I have dealt with things like this before, you know, and I'm still well and safe.”

Her tail is tucked low, almost between her legs and she looks away, her hands wringing the sheath of her nodachi. It doesn't take Water Eyes to see that she's seriously considering trying to take you down and snatching the bomb and trying to do something stupid like put it ~Nowhere~ or hurl it out the window. Explosive devices don't go ~Nowhere~ and sit patiently, they immediately explode and usually kill the person who tired it. The kami apparently didn't like the idea of spirit-children being used for such things. Hurling it out the window might send it out of Yui-niji-chan's anti-radio field and might detonate it, though the impact probably wouldn't.

[+] Try and help her overcome her phobia.

You smile and touch your forehead to hers, and she blinks, her eyes meeting yours. “Don't even try it, Yuuhi-chan, you're too precious.” She licks her lips, and looks down; you reach up with both hands and stroke her soft, fluffy ears firmly and slowly, framing her shoulders and the back of her head with your arms. Her eyes half close, but her blood is still racing, her fear overwhelming even that sensual bliss. “Yuuhi-chan....can you tell me why this is scaring you so badly? It is a very small bomb, and it is not dangerous right now, and it will be even less dangerous in a Barrier. Is there something you're not telling me? Is there a problem that you are aware of that I need to know about?”

While you know the answers to those questions, obviously, it's more important right now to talk to her, to get her to open up. This is the kind of phobia that can have dire consequences in a battlefield, especially if you have to go up against those soldier that are working with Taisho Ryoga. Sure, they may not have sent this, but it would be the obvious thing to do.

Her tail squirms, twitching between her legs, making her skirt jerk about. You continue to stroke her ears as Akari-niji-chan gently ushers Inau-san and Shoko-san into the bedroom. Yuuhi-chan barely notices them leave, and she whispers something unintelligible. “I don't speak Ainu, Yuuchi.” She blinks and looks at you, the pet name distracting her where nothing else has. “Will you tell me?”

You concentrate on her soft, silky ears, her warm breath across your face as she speaks softly. “....they wander the streets at night sometimes, crying....” Her breath hitches.

“I'm right here, Yuuchi. I'm here. It's all right, you're safe.” You gaze into her eyes and she looks back, her heart speeding up again.

“....I ran, but they followed me....I put up a barrier, so I could use the Ghost Flame....” Reasonable enough; you would have done that in her position too. “....the aian no kage followed....but they weren't what I thought, they're not ghosts, they're not ghosts at all....” That's a surprise – you would have thought they were a kind of onryo, a vengeful spirit. “They're youkai, aniki, they're youkai, they burn and they turn things into hell, they turned my Barrier into a hell, they relieved the explosion, again and again and again, and made me watch....”

She's literally gasping for breaths now, her eyes wild and her heart pounding so fast you can feel her pulse throbbing through her ~ears~! The sheath of her nodachi is creaking, she's twisting it so hard; you're surprised she hasn't shattered it. Kiku-chan silently slips out of the room, but Yuuhi-chan isn't in any condition to notice your miko. She stops, seeing the distressed nogitsune-child, and waits patiently for you to acknowledge her presence in some way.

"Yūrei (幽霊?) are figures in Japanese folklore, analogous to Western legends of ghosts. The name consists of two kanji, 幽 (yū), meaning "faint" or "dim" and 霊 (rei), meaning "soul" or "spirit." Alternative names include 亡霊 (Bōrei) meaning ruined or departed spirit, 死霊 (Shiryō) meaning dead spirit, or the more encompassing 妖怪 (Yōkai) or お化け (Obake)."

[X] Hold her close, speak softly, keep her calm.
[X] See if Kiku-chan can help; this is much more her territory than yours.

You slide your arms down, about hers, and pull her close against you. You let her feel your cool body against hers, and wrap your tail along her legs and up to her opposite hip, stroking the exposed skin there. You murmur softly to her, repeating that she is safe and you are here for her, protecting her, in a sanctuary where no youkai can pass. Shuddering, she leans into you, and her hands hesitantly come up to hold you, tentatively wrapping about your waist.

Dealing with youkai is a problem all spirit children have to deal with sooner or later, but being trapped in your own barrier by youkai born of one of the most horrifying events of Japan's history and tortured repeatedly is way, way, WAY past your area of expertise. With her tentative, uncertain hug, you risk taking one hand and flashing Kiku-chan several signs. She understands instantly, and walks over, placing one hand on the nogitsune-born warrior's back.

“Yuuhi-chan....come with me to Ryukusa-sama's temple. You need to be under her protection now.” Still shaking like a leaf, Yuuhi turns to look down at your priestess. “Come with me to Ryukusa's temple,” she whispers more quietly, her soft golden eyes gazing up at the crimson eyed youkai-child. “Come with me,” she says softly, slowly, her Fire Eyes boring into Yuuhi. “That's right. Just....walk with me. Look at me. I can see you need her protection. She will guard you.”
>>
>>39032681
Slowly Yuuhi slips out of your arms, her trembling hand gently taken by Kiku's. Kiku keeps her golden eyes fixed upon the traumatized youkai-born, and slowly leads her to your room. You stay silent, letting your priestess do her duty. The two prisoners, still sealed, are laying outside Er Yin and Kiku's room.

Which unfortunately leaves you without her to assist in yours. No matter, Yuuhi-chan needs the help, and it won't hurt Kiku-chan to have someone to worry over either.

Right, you need to get shit done and people aren't helping. You try and do with Yui what you've done with the other Void element family member you have. (Yui? Can you hear me?)

(Yes, aniki, I can hear you!) She seems surprised, and the wonder in her 'voice' is a pleasant feeling.

(I'm going to take the bomb into a barrier in the house, and dismantle the bomb there, as well as talk to the prisoners. You can come back when I've gone into the barrier. Tell the others to stay out or I'll be angry.)

(Hai, aniki! Oh, if you're just doing the room, you can exclude the floor and walls and ceiling. That way when the spiritual breakdown happens, it won't hurt the wards.) That actually hadn't occurred to you. (They keep pinging the radio but it's a simple block. No one's getting any television though.)

That is useful – it's a real bomb, and they've been trying to set it off. (Thank you, Yui-niji-chan. I owe you.) You can sense her delighted blush but she doesn't say anything through the void. You walk over to Er Yin's bedroom and open the door. Shoko-san, and to your surprise, Jinyuu-onee-sama are standing a few feet from it, maintaining a barrier of water and wind, while Akari is standing between them and facing Kiki-hime, undoubtedly planning on taking any shrapnel for her. The elemental walls aren't a hindrance to you speaking to Shoko or your sister of course.

“Shoko-san, Yuuhi-chan had a breakdown. Kiku-chan is taking care of her in Kiki-hime's and my room. I'm taking the bomb into a barrier in the living room – I'll deal with it there. Anyone who breaks in is going to get beaten to death with rattan shinai by Yui and Akari, so DON'T.” You glare through the wall at all of them....and their acquiescence is quick nods and a small chorus of 'hai'. “I've done this before, I'll be fine.” That last is said for Kiki-hime, who looks worried. Your reassurance nets you a nod and a look of resolve.

With that you walk into the living room and put up the barrier, using Matagama-no-Shitoki's help to make it extra strong and very precise, as well as including your prisoners with it. You sink them into your barrier as well – the Burning Depths, rather than the Icy Abyss where you tucked the sorcerers. Hot water isn't fire, but it will do for now.

Timeless as the barrier is, you have all the time in the world to decide how you're going to deal with the bomb. More importantly, you also have to consider how you are going to dress – because face it, as cool as Sun Jian is, it's not as intimidating as you want to be for your prisoners.

[X] Ryo Professional Look; do it right.

You don't do this often, mostly because it's very much a blazing sign that you're not just Yakuza but a soldier, but today is a special case. Your prisoners are all Clan Kaga and Clan Ryo, and you want them to know you not only mean business, you mean Clan Business. The short Kimono with long, wide sleeves in black with blue edging, the mon for Clan Ryo on its lapels and emblazoned upon your back in red, the hakama style pants, the heavily embroidered belt with the lead powder sewn into it for weight, and your wakizashi. You also tie a headband on, though you leave your hair loose, mostly because it keeps floating everywhere on its own; it has the symbol for water on it, just because some moron ages ago decided it would be cool to announce your weakness to demonstrate your lack of fear.

You have to make a few adjustments, because your breasts and hips are definitely bigger in this form than your natural one. Maybe you'll be able to change shape when you're actually a demigod. That would be freakin' handy.

Usually you would add a bunch of weapons, but in this case, you are the only weapon that matters, and Ame-no-Omukade-no-Musume and Matagama-no-Shitoki are more than enough to show off with. With those final touches, you're ready to deal with anyone.

But first you have a bomb to defuse.

Thank you for the thread!

I have two questions: are devil-childrens the kids of any infernal spirits, and what is Kiku doing to Yuuhi?
>>
>>39034270
Demon-children are usually either the result of a cursed birth, or an actual Christian demon siring a child.

While the acceptance of the Abrahamic deity as a kami gives the priests a certain amount of power, and includes the Christian god in the ranks of kami, that also pulls demons over into Japan, making it possible for them to survive there.

A cursed birth results in a demon-child as well, because there really isn't a classification for that type of birth in terms of youkai (which were never human) or bakemono (which are already living or dead creatures transformed into something else.

Taisho Ryoga is quite clearly the second type, and Ryukusa knows this.

Kiku is performing a purification ceremony on behalf of Yuuhi through her connection with Ryukusa's mikoto. She will also provide psychological and spiritual counseling and work with Yuuhi to overcome the traumas in a more normal way. It will take time, but the purification and protection ceremonies will reduce the problem for quite some time.
>>
>>39034228
Thank you.
>>
Is it Ryukusa or Ryukuza? Or am I missing something?
>>
>>39034417
Will taking these steps lower it's effects permanently or is this a temporary measure that needs something specific to truly heal it?

Ryuu Ryukusa is the MC's name. Ryukuza is the name of the quest, as it is Ryu (Dragon) Yakuza.

>>39034557
It's severe psychological trauma that has resulted in a phobic reaction to explosive devices. Sadly, it's purely 'natural' damage, and as a result, will mostly have to be dealt with the hard way, with therapy and care. The purification and protection ceremonies are helpful, but they won't be a cure. They will prevent episodes like this from happening for a week or two.

>>39034648
That is correct. Emi is an oni-child herself, mind you.
>>
>>39034476

the Dragonette's name is Ryukusa, which is made form "ryu", the Chinese dragon or the promoted rook in shogi, and "kusa", an archaic term for "ninja" (or for "herb"). The Quest is title Ryukuza, however
