You are Kusajishi Riku, and for once it seems your afterlife is looking a bit brighter.

The last few days of your struggle to survive on the streets of the Rukongai have been carefully observed by none other than Shihōin Yoruichi, a surprisingly personable Shinigami Captain who had disguised herself as a cat. After watching you first dodging knives to escape a dumpling restaurant (which you had just robbed) and then defeating a flash-step using con artist (whom you had also proceeded to rob), she led you to her apartments in the Seireitei at the center of the Soul Society and revealed her true identity... and a lot more besides.

After putting some clothes on, she made you an offer: become a Shinigami in her Onmitsukidō, or “Stealth Corps”, in exchange for her patronage. Since the alternative is presumably to return to the streets for another year until the Academy's next round of exams...

“You had me at “free food”,” you admit with a shrug. “Where do I sleep?”

Captain Yoruichi lets loose a sigh of relief, as if she half-expected you to say no. “Next room over, where my bodyguards are supposed to stay. Nobody's in there 'cause I don't like keeping 'em around. But before you go, there's one little caveat.”

Captain Shihōin then hands you a set of black clothing. Though it looks plain, its quality is a far cry from anything you wore in the Rukongai. Looking it over, you find it's similar to her own uniform rather than to what seems the norm around here: no sleeves, no back, and narrow pants that cut off below the knee, complimented by white shin wrappings. Your own garment is ripped and torn along the hem from running... which is kind of sad given how pretty it was when you stole it, but also leaves you few choices. So when the Captain turns to give you some privacy, you figure you might as well humor your strange new benefactor.

“It suits you,” she muses, holding her chin between her fingers as she checks the fit.

You look down over your shoulder, taking it all in while trying to ignore the short, white scar right between your shoulderblades. It feels almost indecent showing this much skin, and the parts of you the uniform does cover it does so with an almost uncomfortable smoothness. That scar is a little unsightly, too. “Why is your uniform so... slinky? And why're you giving me one like it?”

Yoruichi chuckles to herself and slaps you lightly on the shoulder. “Let's say I figure you'll need one like this, so I'm giving you a chance to get used to the fit. Good?”

“The pants are different,” you observe. “They fit closer.”

“Of course,” the Shinigami replies with a stretch and a yawn. “I've been observing your technique, remember? What, do you think I can afford to get you a new hakama every other day?”

“If a closer fit doesn't work, you'll have to wear a skirt or something.”

>What is this?
A quest set in the “Bleach” universe's afterlife, the “Soul Society”, some 200 years prior to the events of canon.
>Who are we, then?
Kusajishi Riku, a resident of the afterlife whose potential to develop immense spiritual power has been noticed by a few Shinigami.
>How closely will this follow canon?
I don't know yet. It mostly depends on you. That being said, be warned: metagaming will not solve any problems. Instead it will likely delay canon events, alter them, or replace them with new problems. Particularly blatant cases of metagaming will be ignored.
>How do names work?
Partly translated for accessibility, with proper names following the Japanese convention of family name first.
>How does I roll dice?
After figuring out what option has won I'll give a dice prompt. Usually rolls will be 3d10 against a set target, first three considered. To succeed, the best of the first three responses must have two passing rolls. A critical success requires three passing rolls. If the best result is one pass, the action fails. If nobody rolls anything that passes, the result is a critical failure. Other die rolls that deviate from this will be explained on a case by case basis.
>”But Queen,” some of you may be asking, “what about that crazy system of Kidō, unarmed, and sword-fighting? Won't that make combat a mess?
When you've learned some techniques I'll start keeping a character sheet with what you know. Write ins for how to accomplish varying actions in combat are always welcome (within reason), and may affect the difficulty and outcome of combat.
>Any other questions?
Lay 'em on me. I'll do my best to answer.

You nod, before looking towards the Captain's waist. You confirm what you thought you noticed a few minutes ago: while every other Shinigami you've seen tonight has carried some kind of weapon, either a sword or in the Gatekeeper's case an axe, your host is unarmed.

“You don't have a sword? Does that mean you're not gonna teach me swordsmanship?” you ask cautiously. It seems from her reaction that Captain Shihōin herself is surprised... you realize it's probably because she's so used to not carrying a sword it's not unusual to her anymore.

For her part, she gives you a curt nod. “Sorry, I forgot you're not familiar with my Clan at all. I don't like talking about politics if I can avoid it, so sit down and listen close. I'll only explain this once.”

You do as she requests and sit across from her, trying to ignore the sensation of impossibly smooth, cool fabric settling around your legs as she begins her explanation.

“The Shihōin Clan is one of five “great” Houses, each of which has its own responsibilities that contribute to political stability,” she tells you. “My Clan watches over artifacts and tools that are too powerful to be used freely, meaning if we had Zanpakuto as well it could make us a threat to the other houses.”

“I thought your swords were a Shinigami's most important tool?” you frown, not quite following the train of logic. “But your clan can't use them?”

Yoruichi sighs and rubs her neck. “The strongest of us, no. That's how the balance is maintained.”

“So how'd you get to be a Captain?” you press.

“Simple,” she replies with a grin you'd almost call wicked. “If I can pound other Captains into the ground bare-handed, who's gonna tell me I need a sword?”

“Not that I don't know how, of course. Don't worry, you'll learn the whole curriculum and then some!”

One Kubo = one level of planning ahead of the reality of a situation.

Example: you swing your sword at me.
1 Kubo: if you swung your sword at me, and I had already moved out of the way.

2 Kubo: if you swung your sword at me, but it turns out I wasn't actually there. Where I was supposedly standing, Momo Hinamori lies on the ground.

>>

But why use antiquated terminology? It's not progressive to be stuck in the past, you know? Maybe you should hang out in a library or an internet cafe for a while, maybe then you'd get a hang of up-to-date slang.
>>
>>39052325
There's still something that's been nagging at you... since you arrived at the Seireitei, you haven't seen any poverty. There's no fighting in the streets, no blood on the walkways, no spots where the plaster facades of the myriad walls have started to crumble. Not a speck of dust to be seen.

“The Seireitei,” you frown as Yoruichi shifts uneasily on her cushion. “How come all the people here are living so well and so peacefully, when out in the Rukongai people are killing each other over scraps of food and rags?”

The Captain shuts her eyes in quiet contemplation. “You've made one misjudgment, Riku.”

“And that is?”

“Not all Shinigami are kind people,” she explains. “The first of us were simply stronger than anyone else, so they climbed to the top of the heap. Today the Seireitei has the power to enforce a few basic rules, but the afterlife is too big to rule like a country, and there are too few of us Shinigami left. That means things are never going to be better out in the Rukongai than they are for the living, and too few Shinigami are inclined to go beyond our basic job.”

“And what is your job?” you ask.

Yoruichi shrugs. “Regulate the flow of souls between the living world and the afterlife. Keep the Hollows at a manageable level. Basically, keep the whole silly thing running.”

>You've mentioned a “war”, and “too few Shinigami” twice now. What the hell happened?
>Leave it at that. If she hasn't brought it up it must be uncomfortable.
>Other?
>>
>>39052710
Shall I come up with new words on the spot, then?

I merely use pre-existing, well-defined terminology because it is efficient. There's no question of what the word 'Orange' means, since it is either a color, or a fruit with a coloration based on its namesake, and context allows one to easily determine which it is. Now, if I used the term Shuck, taken from the Maze-Runner book...well, compare "It tastes like oranges." To, "It tastes like Shuck." Both are used correctly.

The use of antiquated terminology does not imply a lack of contemporary knowledge, merely an appreciation for established, practical conventions.

tl;dr English is fucked up enough, if you understand it then count your blessings and be done.

Words and phrases and metaphors are all far too different, using antiquated phrases and metaphors can lead to stagnation and an insistence on using outdated and inferior convention. Words are a constant, however phrases and metaphors are only relevant based on the times and place they are used, for instance using the phrase "Y'all need to toss that hay." in Tibet would portray nothing to them, however in the Southern portions of the United States it has a meaning entirely it's own.

“That's twice you've mentioned a war,” you observe. “Who can a bunch of dead people go to war with?”

That question seems to have struck a nerve... for the first time, the Captain seems angry about something. It makes you feel almost claustrophobic just to be in the room with her, as if you're being slowly smothered to death by an invisible pressure. As soon as she notices your reaction, the pressure dissipates.

“I'm sorry,” she apologizes quietly. “It's just that's not a topic most of us like to talk about, y'know? We... kind of almost wiped out a clan of living humans with spiritual powers called the “Quincy”.”

Living humans? Why would Shinigami attack normal humans? What could possibly excuse that? You suddenly find yourself gripping your chest, a sharp and unexpected pain bringing your mind back from your sudden anger over what you've just heard.

“It was a difference of philosophy,” Yoruichi explains carefully. “Shinigami purify Hollows when we kill them, and send them to their final reward. Quincies, through intent or some fluke, destroy Hollows outright. They formed an army and began the mass extermination of Hollows, which threatened the cycle of death and rebirth.”

“We tried to reason with them. Some of them tried to reason with us. Sadly, cooler heads didn't prevail.”

Yoruichi rises to her feet, motioning for you to do the same.

"Sorry, Riku, but I don't really feel like talking too much more. Besides, we both need to sleep at some point. I've got a Captains' meeting, and you've got to start training."

And yet, we are in a time and place where swords are a defining trait of culture. Your club simile holds no water when swords are clearly an easier, more common reference. Hence why the antiquated phrase of 'sword' to refer to a penis is still appropriate.

tl;dr It's not antiquated in this setting, asshole.

Your new room is a little sparse compared to Captain Shihōin's, but is still by far the nicest accommodations you've ever been in. A privy with a washing basin allows you to do clean yourself up a bit before you flop down on an actual freaking bed. It's a thin little mattress on top of firm floor mats, and it even comes with a pillow. But somehow, in the flickering candle light, you're having trouble getting to sleep.

You're starting to realize this is actually "too comfortable".

You grab what looks like a pamphlet from near your bed... before realizing that you can't read a single damn word of it. It's all just squiggly lines and pictures to you. Still some of the pictures are nice, and it gives you something to distract yourself with as you lean up against the corner with the blankets off your bed thrown around you.

In the morning you awake to find the dawn glow streaming in through a sliding divider, which leads out onto a little balcony. You also notice that the Captain is standing over your little pile of blankets, wearing a strange look on her face. It's not pity, you've seen plenty of that in your time. No, this strikes you as something more genuine than that: maybe concern? Regret?

You blink and shake the thoughts out of your head. “'zit time already?”

“Not quite,” Yoruichi tells you before knocking at the door. Two uniformed men come in quickly bearing three trays of food: a mixture of hot and cold dishes with white miso and rice. It's the kind of breakfast you'd expect royalty to receive... and then you remember that Shihōin Yoruichi probably IS royalty, or at least nobility.

One of them also carries with him a plain, long sword.

It's much finer than anything you've seen in the Rukongai: a slender waisted hilt, a gently curved blade with plain but clean furniture, and a plain guard.

“Riku, this is an Asauchi,” Yoruichi explains, taking it from her subordinate and passing it to you. “It's a nameless Zanpakuto students carry with them at all times. It's designed to change to reflect your power, if you encourage it to. That means you eat, sleep, and bathe with this sword within arm's reach... doubly so since it was a pain in the ass for me to get.”
(1/2)
>>
>>39053849
“Now eat up. We haven't got that much time before my meeting.” You then see why there are three trays... Yoruichi demolishes the first one in the most un-ladylike orgy of consumption you've ever seen from a woman before diving straight into the second.

Jesus, can she even taste that stuff before she chokes it down? Or are her taste buds as exceptional as her legs are?

"So you say I'm gonna be training?" you ask.

"Mhmm," Yoruichi replies, her mouth still full of food.

"What's that gonna involve?"

"Ahve gott ah guy in muh divishun, Kishukke," she begins before swallowing the last of her second pot of rice. "One of my Unit Commanders. Good friend of mine. He'll show you some basic stuff, and see what you can do."

"What do you mean, basic?" you press.

"Well," the Captain replies, shoving a little apple tart into her mouth.

Yoruichi begins to explain the Academy curriculum to you through several more mouthfuls of food, until finally she runs out. Kidō is the most flexible art taught to Shinigami, she tells you, and is divided into two categories: Bakudō, the “Way of Binding”, and “Hadō”, the “Way of Destruction”. The individual spells are ranked #1 through 99 in increasing order of power, with students usually starting at #1. It can also be used to heal injuries, which is called 'kaidō'. Zanjutsu is the art of using a Zanpakuto, both in combat and to send souls from the living world to Soul Society. Hohō and hakuda are the arts of rapid movement and unarmed combat, and are the Stealth Corps' specialties. Yoruichi in particular is apparently legendary for her prowess with them.

“We can give you the groundwork for all four," she eventually concludes as she stands up. "A lot of early spells you'll learn age like milk, but I'll start you working on a few of the good ones. I can also help you refine your mobility technique and teach you the basics of combat: more than the basics if you're a quick study.”

Then Yoruichi grins at you, resting a hand on her hip as she looks you over. “If you're good enough at this, I've got a feeling the Academy may end up a formality.”

I'm inclined to agree, most of the other choices are shit.

Zaraki too crazy, fuck son, calm down.
Mayuri is even crazier, in other ways
Byakuya is an asshole and "muh family" probably wouldn't see us worthy in the first place
Old Man Yamma is Old.
The Sickly one is too nice, but still too mean somehow
The pervy one probably isn't even interested in that sort of thing, I bet
Aizen is too busy fapping over his Keikaku
And Shinji is a captain still, right? Before he gets fucked up by Aizen? But he is too busy fighting with that one chick to care.

"Only problem is, where do we train you up?" At this thought Yoruichi frowns as she ushers you out into the hallway.

You're not quite sure you understand why that's a problem, and you tell her so: with all this space, surely there's a good training ground someplace for you to use?

The frown stays stubbornly on her face. "It's never that simple. Two of our vassal families, the Omaeda and Fēng, may not like an outsider getting special treatment... especially not from me."

"Is it that big a deal?" you ask, stunned that a Captain's personal business could be the subject of such pointless scrutiny.

Yoruichi seems to share your frustration at that notion. "It's politics, Riku," she grimaces. "Bullshit any way you slice it."

"I know a secluded place," she tells you, "or you can train right here on our own training grounds. One avoids the bullshit entirely and gives us some leeway, and the other... well, the only benefit would be if you prove exceptional right from the start. It'd show the doubters why you're here."

“I'd rather not be the center of attention,” you admit. “Besides, when I can finally prove myself to these families maybe they'll just accept me.”

“Yeah, here's hoping,” Yoruichi mutters to herself before flash-stepping away.

You follow her, of course, a relatively short distance. She's leading you towards a hill near the center of the city, upon which you can see a large pair of wooden posts standing, connected by a horizontal cross beam. They're absolutely massive!

Before you get there, Yoruichi leads you to a cave, then down a ladder at the back of that cave and into a larger cavern. This one however, is brightly lit inside somehow. Off to one side a few large pools of hot water bubble invitingly, but in front of you stands a blonde man in a black uniform who looks like he just rolled out of bed.

“Kisuke!” Yoruichi calls before flash-stepping towards her friend.

You can see them talking briefly before your Captain waves you over.

“This is Urahara Kisuke, commander of the Detention Unit. Kisuke, this is the woman I told you about, Kusajishi Riku.” Wait, when did she tell him about you?

“It's... a pleasure, I guess?” Commander Urahara greets you, scratching idly at his unkept hair. “Sorry, I'm not too good at small talk! I look forward to seeing you in action, though.”

“Now, Kisuke. Please instruct my student on Hadō #4, #12, and #31, and Bakudō #8, #26, and #30 while I'm gone.”

She then turns to leave, disappearing as quickly as you both arrived... no, much faster than that.

"She must be running late again," your new instructor sighs. "Jeez..."

"One... two... three... four..." he mutters, counting off the seconds since his Captain left. "Okay, that should be far enough."

Finally, Urahara Kisuke turns to face you directly. "Kusajishi Riku," he begins, a trace of something like nervousness in his voice. "I'd like to ask you a favor. Think of it as repayment, or an exchange of sorts."

You're not quite sure you like where this is going, but you really want to start learning...

"Okay?"

"I'd like to take a small sample of your blood," he explains. "For research purposes. Just a little bit, I promise you won't even miss it!"

“Alright,” you mutter. “Let's say I agree. What happens then?”

“I study your blood and spiritual energy,” he explains, “and cross-reference it with my other samples from Shinigami and Rukongai citizens with no spiritual energy.”

“Cross-reference?” you frown.

Kisuke nods sheepishly. “Sorry. I mean compare it to the averages and range of variation across a number of characteristics. See, the whole point is that for all the centuries we've been doing this, we Shinigami still don't understand why some people come here with spiritual energy and others never develop it.”

“So because Yoruichi thinks I have a lot of potential,” you think aloud, “you want to see exactly how that judgement is reflected in my blood?”

“Exactly!” the man exclaims. “It's a shame nobody else really takes that much of an interest in this stuff, and Yoruichi thinks it's more of a hobby for me. An eccentricity she finds endearing. It's hard to find chances to work on it in peace, though.”

You sigh, offering up your arm. “Fine. But make it quick, would you?”

“Done,” he replies immediately. When you look back down, you find that he's already produced a little tube of glass, pierced your arm with the long needle at one end of it, and drawn blood into the tube so quickly you hardly noticed the movement.

That's... a little frightening, actually.

“I'll be back in a second or two,” Kisuke tells you. “Gotta put this in storage!”

It doesn't take long for the Commander of the Detention Unit to complete his errand, and he quickly returns to the private training grounds where he left you waiting.

"Alright," he announces. "I'm supposed to teach you kidō... the list the Captain gave me is pretty tough stuff for a rookie. But I can see why she chose them: they're five spells that never really lose their usefulness, and one that's particular to the Stealth Corps."

"So what do you want to learn first? Hadō? Bakudō? Or something sneaky?"

"Sneaking is something the Stealth Corps does, right?" you ask, somewhat sarcastically. "I mean, it's right there in the name and all? Maybe we should start there."

Your instructor nods, before scratching his blonde stubble as he ponders out how to explain the spell. "Bakudō #26, or Kyokkō, can conceal your spiritual energy, or for an advanced practitioner it can bend light around your body, making you invisible to the naked eye. It can still be noticed by really sharp fighters, though."

"Ah, but it's so hard to explain to someone who probably can't consciously manipulate their spiritual energy yet," he continues, a trace of frustration evident in his voice. "Why me..."

You sigh. "Why don't you just explain it to me, and see if I can do it?"

"Well, you usually recite an incantation, and then the name and number of the spell," Kisuke explains, "while drawing and shaping your spiritual energy into the proper form. Some people can do it without the incantation at the cost of a drop in power, in a technique called eishōhaki, but it's much faster."

"For Kyokkō, it's the difference between hiding your presence and bending the light."

"Can you show me?" you ask.

Commander Urahara nods.

"Bakudō #26, Kyokkō!" he announces... and you can feel what he does with his energy just before his spiritual pressure disappears from your senses altogether.

"I doubt it'll be as easy as watching me do it once..."

"Bakudō #26, Kyokkō!" you repeat, and Kisuke's eyes widen in surprise as you copy his technique: the trick isn't to "bend" anything. The trick to this part of the technique is to focus on pushing "inwards" with your mind. This keeps your spiritual energy from inadvertently leaking out like it was a few seconds ago, and the effect is that to Kisuke's "sixth sense" you're now a non-presence.

"Remarkable," the Commander mutters half to himself. "I apologize, but it seems I underestimated you. I can see what Yoruichi was talking about now... yeah. This is good."

"Tell me," he continues, staring you down with something you'd imagine to be an analytical, almost clinical interest, "how do you want to surprise me next, Kusajishi Riku?"

“Let's try a binding spell,” you suggest.

The blonde Commander nods, before taking up a bladed stance. “Watch carefully.”

With his left arm, Urahara quickly traces a yellow triangle of energy in the air, the points of which bear spears that point straight at you. “Bakudō 30, Shitotsu Sansen!”

The three spear-like beams of light lance out towards you, but not quite quick enough that you couldn't dodge it if you really put your mind to it. Instead, realizing this is part of the training, you allow the beams to hit you full-on. One slams into each of your arms just below the shoulder, while the third slams into your gut, carrying you through the air until you slam into one of the many rocky outcroppings in this underground training area.

“How're you feeling, Miss Riku?” Kisuke calls out from where he's standing, a good distance away.

You smirk. “The rock hurt worse than the beams, Commander. You're not holding back, are you?”

With a flash-step that's only second to Yoruichi's herself, at least as far as you've seen, the man joins you over by the rock. “Try to escape.”

“Piece of cake!” you declare.

Kisuke chuckles to himself. “You're spirited, that's for sure! Go on, Kusajishi Riku! Show me what you can do!”

Wow... for someone who came across as so lackadaisical when you first met him, this guy can really get fired up about something when it's interesting. Well, you figure you can't disappoint him now, can you?

“Hyooooohhh...” you growl, gulping down massive amounts of air to fill your lungs, until you finally push your mind and energy as hard as you can. Wind swirls around the rock you're pinned to as Kisuke's eyes widen again in excitement.

“My my, how scary!” he grins, before chanting something under his breath. He's using the incantation after hitting you with the spell to strengthen it! You're not sure how you know that, but then again, it just makes sense to your that it would work that way.

You laugh. “Too slow!”

With a great rending sound, the three spears collapse from the pressure you're exerting against them. The rock you were pinned to a moment ago shatters behind you as you trace a perfect triangle in the air between yourself and Urahara.

“Bakudō 30, Shitotsu Sansen!”

The spears lash out towards your instructor, who has only a moment to realize what's going on before they strike him. His body is propelled at absurd speeds towards the nearest vertical object, pinning him to it with a resounding crash.

You can feel yourself grinning wildly with pride. “How's that surprise for ya, Kisuke!?”

“You crushed my weakened binding spell with your own spiritual pressure,” Urahara groans loudly. “How interesting.”

“But still...”
(1/2)
>>
>>39057595
"... not enough," you hear his voice mutter, from entirely too close!

Shit!

As "Kisuke" slowly evaporates, leaving your three spears impaled an arm's length or so into a bigass rock, you notice too late that the real Kisuke is right next to you. His arm is already moving.

Too late.

The man's fist crashes into your cheek, sending you reeling across the bleak landscape. That was way more force than a punch should ever have! What the hell is this guy!?

"Utsusemi," Kisuke mutters towards you as you rise to your feet. "A movement technique that fools an opponent into thinking they've struck your body, when your real body has already moved."

You groan.. you're gonna have a brilliant shiner from this one for sure. "When..."

"As soon as you broke my spell."

You hate to admit it, but Urahara Kisuke... is good. Really good.

Better than you. For now, at least.

"But to break a 30's level Bakudō through brute force..." he continues. "It seems I've underestimated you again, Riku."

And you're quickly put on your back as Kisuke effortlessly slings you over his head and slams you to the ground, knocking all the air from your lungs. His downward punch you manage to avoid with a short dash to the side, only to find that he's dug up a handful of dirt and sand to throw in your eyes.

A second dash backwards puts you right in range of an axe-kick, which you block with both arms.

You're pretty sure you feel something break before Kisuke twists in midair to knee you in the side straight out of the kick.

"Damn.." you grunt as you roll to your feet. These attacks... how can any person generate that kind of force with a simple punch or a kick? And Yoruichi is BETTER than this? What kind of monster must she be?

"If Yoruichi gets mad," you tell Kisuke as you rise to your feet, battered but still in the fight, "you'd better take the responsibility, Commander Urahara."

"Fine, fine," he replies, waving it off. "If you can't take this much heat, you're not ready for Miss Yoruichi yet."

"What did you say!?" you demand through gritted teeth. "Are you mocking me!?"

"Wouldn't dream of it!" Kisuke taunts you, laughing from behind his hand.

That's it. No more fucking around.

You settle in a bit in preparation for an all-out assault. If you leave anything behind, you'll be crushed. If you have doubts, you'll always be weak. If you're gonna stand up to an opponent like this, anything less is an insult... both to him, as well as to yourself.

You leap into action, throwing a flurry of punches that Kisuke either dodges or blocks before dashing past him and sliding to a stop. As you turn and face him, you bring your arm up to prepare a spell... but Urahara Kisuke is already one step ahead of you. His fist closes in on your head, and you can see disappointment in his eyes as he strikes you down.

Or so he thought.

“Bakudō 30, Shitotsu Sansen!” you roar from behind him, your spell having been prepared in the splintered second during which you had Kisuke fooled by your copy of his utsusemi. The three spears slam into his back and side full-force, lifting him off his feet.

You dash after him as quickly as your legs will carry you, somehow managing not to shred every item of clothing on your person as you give chase. “NOT YET! KISUKE!”

And the blow you direct at his right side has to have been the hardest you've ever landed in your life.

Maybe. More thief then thug however. We played the first thread pretty low risk.
>>
>>39058858
When the dust settles, it's still the Commander of the Detention Unit who's on his feet, and you who's on your knees, cradling your ruined left hand.

Kisuke grins, gently massaging the ribs under his right armpit. “Ah, you got me with that one! And by the look of it you only broke seven bones. Well done!”

“The fuck are you saying?” you gasp, fighting the urge to scream from the pain in your fist that dwarfs the ache in your muscles.

“Well, you see hakuda is hard for most Shinigami to grasp,” he begins to explain, taking a knee next to you to examine your hand more closely. “What looks like a simple punch requires me to understand my full range of motion, how to generate physical force from any position, and how to overcome my enemy's spiritual pressure.”

“Your spiritual pressure?” you hiss as he prods one of your broken digits to test its condition. “That's how you did all that?”

“Exactly. My spiritual energy is easily at a Captain's level, so it's no wonder punching me does more harm to your hand than to me... except for that last blow. You flattened your fist at the last second and let out a spike of spiritual energy, and hit me right over the liver. The smaller contact area and greater power meant it was enough to bruise it through my ribs. Might've even cracked one."

That makes sense. By using his energy and technique, Kisuke could both receive and dish out far greater physical wounds than you'd otherwise expect. It's not just the body that's important in fighting unarmed, but the spirit as well. More specifically, control over it.

“Ah, crap...” Kisuke groans, “I was gonna go drinking with Lieutenant Omaeda tonight though! Guess that's my punishment for overdoing it, right?”

You let out a pained laugh. “That was great. And here I thought you were too lazy to teach me anything.”

“Looks can be deceiving,” Kisuke observes. “Especially within the Seireitei.”

“Next time you teach me though,” you counter, “could you try and do it without breaking any of my bones?”

“I don't know,” a familiar voice interrupts. “Can you?”

“Kisuke...” Yoruichi growls through gritted teeth, having suddenly appeared behind her subordinate. “Care to explain why my student's hand is broken in a dozen places? You didn't follow my instructions, did you? Eh?”

“Ah, it's entirely my fault, Miss Executive!”

“That wasn't the question, dumbass!” Yoruichi growls back, her face twitching in agitation.

“I taught Miss Kusajishi the Shitotsu Sansen, but it wasn't as strong as I thought it could be!” Urahara explains hurriedly to his friend. “So I started teaching her hakuda to get her to let loose a little... and I kinda lost track of time!”

“Did it work?”

Her eyes widen in a moment of genuine shock as Urahara rips away the Kyokkō you forgot as even in place, and allows your full spiritual pressure to be felt. She quickly reigns her surprise in, however.

“Good work, Kisuke,” Yoruichi commends her subordinate with a sigh, before flash-stepping behind him and smacking him across the back of the head. The look of long-suffering frustration never leaves her face. “But next time you make a judgment call, try explaining it to me instead of groveling, would you?”

“Of course, Yoruichi,” Kisuke replies with a curt bow. “So, how's Old Man Yama?”

“I'll tell you later,” Yoruichi replies, her tone somewhat less harsh now. “And you can give me an exact report on how you got Riku's spirit pressure to Lieutenant level in less than six hours. For now, get back to work.”

“Right, right!” Kisuke bows apologetically before disappearing.

One thing being a long time reader of bleach taught me is that all Lieutenants are not equal.

Some are near/at captain level, others are barely above 3rd seat.

All depends how filled out the ranks are.

Eh, I mean a bunch of human teenagers got to the point they overwhelmed everyone weaker then Renji or Ikkaku in the midst of enemy territory from only ten days worth of training. This isn't that far out there just yet. But yeah "Lieutenant level" doesn't mean Lieutenant skill.
>>
>>39059667

Obviously. Or in the range it takes most to get promoted there.

Just was stating how much of a range there is in Lts.

Of course part of it is if there is not much in the way of dead or retiring captains, there could be quite a backlog of quality Shinigami.

Riku seriously needs pure training now. 2 crits, a failure that was close and a success got us a bit of a boost.
>>

Maybe I read into it to deeply but it just seems out of character to me, ya know?

Take care of yourself as long as you can remember, all interaction you really had was people trying to hurt you or just not help you in general.

You end up being very self sustained and suspicious as an initial reaction, even if we trust Best Cat we'd probably still throw a side-long look at her and say "What the hell?"
>>

Pretty much this. In addition, even if she does want us to be her girltoy, I'd say the accomadations are good enough even if we're heterosexual. I don't think Riku is too much of a prude to pass up a cushy life.
>>
>>39059928

“I dunno,” you admit as you peel off one item of clothing after the next, carefully folding them with your good hand and placing them next to your sword. “He's your friend, right? Can't be that bad.”

Yoruichi laughs as she picks you up by the scruff of your neck. “So you picked up on that, huh?”

“What're you...”

You suddenly find yourself face-down in a pool of hot water, from which you come up sputtering.

“The hell!? You coulda warned me!”

Your Captain settles calmly into the steamy water across from you, swishing a little of the water around inside her mouth and swallowing it. “That's what I did. Kisuke and I built this place when we were kids so we'd have a place to train. The hot springs have healing properties, so I thought you could use a dip."

Sure enough, your mangled hand is starting to steam and mend itself right before your hands, and the pain that had wracked your body quickly dissipates.

“Well I'll be damned.”

Yoruichi relaxes for a moment, eyes shut, probably trying to wind down after her meeting. You figure if every Captain is as intense as she is, and especially given the fact that she seems to hate bureaucracy, she must hate those meetings more than anything else.

“So, I see you've already gotten stronger,” she muses aloud, eyes still shut. “I can't say it comes as a shock. You had high potential from the start, after all.”

You shrug. “Not nearly enough to face a Captain, and I only learned three kidō.”

“Where is home?” Yoruichi asks quite suddenly. It takes a second or two for your brain to even change gears.

You think back to when you first arrived in the Soul Society. There were many places in Kusajishi where you sought shelter, but you couldn't really call any of them your “home” at all. Same with that pile of scrap you lived in out in Hokutan: you're not there anymore, and you never wanted to be there in the first place. It was a place to lay your head and nothing more.

Then you think of your current place of residence: posh by comparison to the others, and it's where you live now and plan to live for a while. Even at the end of your time in the Academy you'll be in the barracks nearby at worst...

“... no,” you mutter aloud. That's not it either. If you do get promoted to Captain some day, won't that mean you'll be living in that Division's headquarters? Your current residence is only temporary, so how can it be your true “home”?

“That's the wrong question,” you realize aloud. “Home should be about more than just where you live, isn't it?"

“Good,” Yoruichi grins as she sends your sword spiraling straight for your face. You catch it with your hand, which by now is as good as new. A bit stiff, perhaps, but a damn sight better than it was when you broke it against Urahara's ribs.

“Keep that feeling of realization in your mind. In Rinzai it's called “kensho”, knowledge of your own essence. I want you to climb on that rock over there, cross your legs, and lay your blade across your knees.”

Too confused to put up an argument, you do as she insists, your confusion only mounting as she presses a fingertip to your forehead.

“I'm gonna teach you Jinzen,” she explains. “It's how a Shinigami converses with their Zanpakuto. So I need you to focus on what you felt just now, and listen. Listen to what your heart and mind are telling you, and respond in kind.”

But then again, it only took Ichimaru Gin a year to pass the academy, and I'm pretty sure Hitsugaya developed Bankai even earlier than Gin did.

So even discarding Ichigo, there have been shown to be people who are able to become really strong really fast.
>>

And will you be salty if we get it?

We will ace every single Shinigami combat, kido, and swordsmanship test in the academy.

We will be held back due to academics.

Possibly a little.

>>39061007
Even in canon it was said it takes ten years to learn Bankai normally. That's not actually that long when you consider the lifespan of a Shinigami can be measured in centuries. And recall that people passing the Academy in shortened amounts of time and going straight to Lieutenant or seated officer positions is far from uncommon.

You're not Ichigo levels of bullshit, but you've reached the first "plateau" even faster than I anticipated. That's what happens when you pass all the rolls I was trying to set fairly high, with crits in some cases.

“I talked to you when you were a cat,” you grant her, cocking a skeptical eyebrow. “Hell, may as well give this a shot.”

Doing as Yoruichi says, you try to focus on capturing that feeling of sudden realization as she takes a seat beside you.

“Breathe deeply, slowly, evenly,” she instructs as she corrects your posture. “Back straight, body relaxed. And listen.”

Time passes. Minutes, hours maybe. You can't be sure. But eventually, something extraordinary happens.

You find yourself in perhaps the strangest place you've ever seen since you arrived in the Soul Society, seemingly worlds divorced from both the antiseptic atmosphere of the Seireitei and the slums of the Rukongai. It seems entirely natural, and yet entirely too surreal and alien to be real. Glowing red lava spills over a high seacliff under a steel gray sky, casting faint shadows about the bleak landscape. In places the volcanic gasses have ignited in plumes of azure-blue flames, which set the clouds of hazy steam rising up from the ocean aglow with a faint light. Perched on a precipice that juts out over the waters that seethe and roil below is a solitary cherry tree in full bloom, its vibrant pink flowers so luminous that you'd almost say they were glowing from within.

Under that unreal tree, in the middle of this surreal plane, a figure quietly reclines.

“I was wondering when you would finally have the privilege of my most distinguished presence, my dear Riku.”

The figure, in fact a pale-haired and regal woman dressed in a fabulous, elegant formal kimono that would make an Empress seem absolutely tacky by comparison, turns to face you. As she does so, the golden-yellow furs she seemed to have been reclining against shift and sway...

“Who are you?” you ask. “Are you my Zanpakuto?”

The stranger laughs haughtily, covering her mouth with a small fan produced from one sleeve.

“I suppose I have you at a disadvantage,” she intones, “so I suppose the rules of hospitality demand that I rectify that situation immediately.”

“Tenkotsuki is my name, but you have a long way to go before you have earned the right to call upon it and have me respond, my dear...”

Yup, but >>39061342 is correct.

Tenkotsuki follows very specific rules of etiquette, and part of that is giving an introduction. It doesn't mean you can use her abilities at all: in fact, getting to the point where you've mastered her shikai will take longer than it will to get from that point to bankai. Probably by a matter of decades.

>>
>>39061308

Almost sounds like a reference to a Kitsune.

May have fire powers.

>>39061428

I guess even getting access to the basics of the Shikai will take quite a while.

>>39061392
And even if you ran it through google translate it would come out meaningless, because it's wordplay.
>>
>>39061428
So her shikai will be really tricky to use? Given that thematically, Tenkotsuki seems to kind of be all over the place, it makes sense.

Tenkotsuki was always going to be our zanpaktou spirit right, like that wasn't something rolled for?
>>
>>39061477
Wordplay? As expected of a zanpaktou, seeing as some are references to proverbs and such like. Do you know Japanese/know people who know Japanese?
>>
>>39061476
There's definitely an explanation. Kisuke, by this point, has figured it out. Yoruichi suspected something like this result from the start.

Thursday, you'll be running into a Captain who will also immediately recognize what's going on.

>>39061444
I will indeed, particularly for the Kidou Corps which was very hard hit.

>>39061435
Close. It's a play on the term "kitsunetsuki", referring to the state of being possessed by a fox, and the term "zenko", referring to a benevolent fox. "zen" is corrupted to "ten", meaning "heaven" or "heavenly", making it roughly mean "possession by a divine/god fox".
>>
>>39061477
Given that it may take decades to be able to use Shikai, and that we're set 200 years prior to canon, and can yet still affect those events, can we expect large, multi-year timeskips?
>>
>>39061495
Not always. There's another layer of Kubo between what may have happened and what did happen, though in most cases there'd be similarities.

The wordplay as I explained it isn't the only significance to the name and identity.
>>
>>39061579
Ooohhh, I thought we had a two part zanpaktou and she was sitting on some kind of mount, but that was her tails.

Also what even are the Kidou Corps? Like were they just completely scrapped after Hachigen and Tessai left?
>>
>>39061609
Yes. There will be large chunks of time where there won't be much to do, though events in Japan between now and canon will have an impact.

Lots of people died in a lot of battles starting right around the mid 1800s, and Yoruichi's gonna be sending you places.
>>
>>39061636
>Also what even are the Kidou Corps? Like were they just completely scrapped after Hachigen and Tessai left?

Probably mostly scrubs after they left, no time to rebuild them as there were huge holes in everything afterwards.

>>
>>39061682
Or is that not relevant seeing as we'll be staying in Japan?
>>
>>39061682

Yeah, and there is little mention on how Japan's long list of gods/yokai play into bleach, it is like they don't exist.

Or Hollows/Shinigami.
>>
>>39061739
Technically in the last arc, we received evidence that seems to indicate that yokai are indeed things, though that just makes things more confusing.
>>
>>39061739

>>39061667
Oh, if only you know how messy things can get between now and canon though...

That's gonna have to be it for me. I'll have a character sheet ready for the next run. Right now you may be interested to know where you stand within the setting:

>Shihōin Yoruichi is what you think a friend looks like, though you're still unsure why she's so interested in you.
>Urahara Kisuke regards you as someone to watch, both as a potential friend and ally and from a scientific standpoint.
>The Omaeda family doesn't like what it's hearing.
>Shaolin Fēng has heard of you.
>Nobody else knows who you are, really.
>>
>>39061783
>Oh, if only you know how messy things can get between now and canon though...

Dumping another captain level person with potentially weird powers can skew things.

This is the 4th bleach based quest currently ongoing on /tg/ too.
>>
>>39061783
Oh right, the Omaeda family are pretty much permanently the Second Division Lieutenants, just like the Kuchiko clan has a monopoly on the Sixth Division.

I decided to crunch the numbers, and we had a 35.5% chance of passing the "talk to Zanpakuto" roll, as opposed to a 28% chance if we only had three rolls.
