Today a snake tried to drown and eat you. Then it failed at the first part of its plan after something demonstrated the "bigger fish" rule via tiny white bubbly things that ate the snake alive while you escaped.

Safely back on your log you have time to catch your breath. Somehow you made it out of that altercation with only minor bruising. You're slightly wary of spending any amount of time in the water right now though.

>Suck it up, this log has places to be and mommas to meet, lizard engines to full
>Lizard engines are on double time now, need to not be near white bubbly death
>Paddle to shore, maybe we can make an oar or paddle
>Maybe just walk a while?

Your brother pats your back while you catch your breath. The water has calmed, and the only sign anything went on is that there's a faint red tint to it.

"We should get going," you tell your brother.

He bobs his head in agreement. "I'll push for a while."

"I'll help."

He looks confused.

"I would rather gets away from bloody water and whatever got the snake while the getting is good,' you explain dropping into the water next to him.

He shrugs and you bother start pushing. Whether due to urgency or synergy with the lizard next to you can't tell, but the log glides through the swamp at an increased pace. The only downside is that with both of you swimming now you're essentially both pulling a double shift. After a couple hours you're forced to stop and rest. Food is divvied out and you chew on it as the log continues drifting slowly in the direction you were pushing it.

You spot a fairly oversized frog sitting on the shore about the same time he spots your log. He's fat enough he'd probably be a good meal, or alternatively a good fight. You don't have much experience fighting frogs.

The frogs weight shifts and you get the impression it's about to try to be the second thing to bomb your log today. You're not going to have that. You turn and give the frog a hiss that reverbberates from the bottom of your longs to the deepest part of the pouch on your throat before slipping out and echoing through the swamp. Your eyes catch the frogs and it tries to flinch mid-leap and ends up falling into the water. It flounders for a moment before surfacing a few feet from you. Again your eyes meet but this time the sun is high in the sky behind your, shadow falls over the frog's face and you open your mouth, showing off your teeth and hissing again. This time low and sharp.

The hiss has no technical meaning in either the swamp language or in proper lizard, but the gist is universally clear to anything with ears.

Water splashes everywhere as the frog backpedals like it just jumped headfirst into a fire. It manages to pull itself back onto the bank and leaps off into the bushes.

You puff out a breath and resume eating. There's not time for cowardly frogs in lizard business. Your brother applauds politely from his half of the log and you blush, having forgotten he was there.

"That was great," he says with amusement, "Should have done that to the snake."

"Shutup," you say defensively, "It's your turn to push."

He sighs and looks at the water mournfully before sliding back in. There are another few hours easy travel before night falls and they pass uneventfully as the swamp passes around you. You pass the fork in the path that Rolo told you about, the one mom was more likely to use on her return trip. If she hasn't already past you you're very likely certain to run into her now.

With the sun setting you get your brother to pull the log over so you can start digging tonight's shelter. Once you've widened the hole enough you call him over to help and the rest of the ordeal is done in short order. You take advantage of your log and wedge it into the hole of your burrow. The night is quiet from there. You fall asleep holding your cold fire stone.

Your awoken by the feeling of something tickling your nose. You hear a cute sneeze from your brother, and see he remains snoozing in the dim you light. You wait a moment and you notice the ground trembles slightly and dirt leak down from the cieling. You wait and the trembling repeats. The roof looks fairly solid. You're pretty sure it'll hold. The rumbles repeat and seem to get closer before they abruptly stop with the largest shake you've felt yet. The dirt falling from the last tremor manages to rouse your brother as he sneezes to clear his nose. He looks at you curiously and you tell him what you heard/felt.

As quietly as you can you force the log free of the hole. After a couple seconds of fiddling you ditch your bag as too noisy, and your brother follows suit. The hole isn't going anywhere, you'll be back for your things later.

Outside it's obviously a couple hours til dawn, there's nothing immediately obvious around your hole to blame for the tremors. You snoop around with your brother, slowly exploring in the direction it came from and coming up largely empty. Your brother is the one who finally finds what you're looking for.

"Were these here when we arrived?" he asks, standing on top of a pile of good sized boulders and rocks.

Upon reflection you don't remember them. When you look closer at them they're surprisingly clean of moss and swamp dross, despite being pretty deep in the ground.

Rocks. Well that's boring. Should've just slept in. You take a moment to check the sky for more rocks. Then a paranoid thought creeps through your brain and you check every other direction. You're not sure why but for some reasons boulders falling from the sky strikes you as an omen that someone is going to die soon. Nothing is immediately apparent as dangerous but you decide it's better to be safe than sorry.

You dive back into your hole to gather your things. Your brother apparently gets the message and starts pulling the log back into the water. In short order you're back in the watery path through the swamp and on your way. You do a pair of quick shifts so that you both get an opportunity to eat and get a morning bask in, and mercifully nothing bothers you as you go.

In the middle of a though about how the swamp seems pretty unaggressive this morning you're interrupted by a strange site. Coming from the north you spot a wave of water breaking over some submerged object and steaming towards you. You quickly yell back to your brother to pull the log over but his response seems to take an eternity as the log slowly turns. You put your own tail to hurry things along but the erupting water seems to go faster as if to thwart you.

"BRACE!" you yell, sinking you claws into the log and holding as tight as you can. You don't have time to check on your brother as the water before the wave parts to allow a gator to fly into the air. It's twice the size of the one that tried to eat you if it's an inch. It passes narrowly over the log barely missing you.

And then the water parts again. You see teeth, and scaled and eyes pass you in a blur, upsetting the water and hurling you away. You catch a glimpse of massive jaws closing on the gators tail, and then you hear a crack like a whip. Then the water fully bowls you over and throws you to shore. You manage to get your claws loose and roll free of the wreck of your log as you hit dry, for swamp values of dry, land. Your brother lands nearby looking more dazed than you.

Across the water on an island of earth in the swamp water you find sight of the gator again, it's only half the gator it was, its tail and one hindlimb gone. Standing above it is the largest lizard you've ever seen. Standing at it's full height it must be at least 10 meters high. From nose to tail it's even longer. It stands triumphant gleaming purple, gold and silver in the sunlight.

You see its dewlap expand as it pulls in air and you remember something auntie told you. You clamp your hands over your ears and try to dig face first into the loose swamp muck. You manage to get you heard into the ground and you realize that your brother was still reeling from the upset log.
[1/2]
>>
>>39095577
Then the noise happens and you forget about anything else. Your ears explode in pain at the sheer loudness of the thing. A roar seems too tame to describe the agonizing sound that passes through earth and flesh to rattle your bones. You writhe for a minute waiting for the world to stop spinning and settle back down in the proper order. You'd settle for incorrect order even, as long as it settles. You're not sure how much time passes but your senses fall back into place and you find you managed to thrash your way back out of the ground.

Your brother lies nearby twitching. His expression blank and uncomprehending. You prod him but he fails to respond, completely out cold with his eyes open. That wasn't a thing you thought could happen. Back with the massive lizard you see she's tucked into a alligator breakfast.

Yes, she. She's got a certain set about her scales. Also, if that isn't your mother than you'll eat your hat. Which would really suck since your hat is mostly a raven skull and feathers.

It's kind of awkward that you spent all this time, almost half your life if you're measuring it right, trying to get to where you are right now and you have no idea what to do now that you're here. You were kind of focuses on getting here. You settle on you most time honored words.

"Hey!" you call out, moving over to water's edge.

Your mother sits up from her meal and her turns to half face you. She doesn't spend any time looking for the source of your call, you notice, she just looks immediately at where you are. You also notice that despite only half her face being turned toward you she still has two eyes on you. That's a new thing.

She stands and you half to suppress a flinch as she manages to tower over you from twenty yards away. The water is barely deep enough for her to need to swim and she walks across the bottom most of the way to stand over you. As she gets closer you notice that her scales are diferent than yours. Hers are thicker and cover her in a thick series of plates, some of which, have apparently had metal riveted to them, mostly around her joints where her scales are small and thinner. She's also an almost yoral purple, with yellow patterns splashed along her entire length and ringing her limbs. Her eyes, and you count four of them, are like black pits that are in her head, a striking contrast to the purple above them and the yellow below. The claws on her fingers are also reinforced with metal, though the tips are exposed so it's possible that she had that done as a decoration or something.

You pull yourself away from such thoughts as your mother comes to a rest in front of you.

"Uhm. Are you my mommy?" you ask, immediately feeling foolish but unable to think of anything else you could have said.

"PROBAB-" she starts to speak and you step back as her voice booms loudly through the swamp. She stops herself and clears her throat

[1/2]
>>
>>39096432
[2/2]
"Probably not, child," she says in a barely audible whisper, "Though I suppose I could help you fine her." She looks back down the path you came up wistfully. "I'ms already late. What is your mother's name?"

"Kasha," you tell her, and she flinches and you manage to keep yourself from flinching back. Then her eyes fill with anger and you do flinch. She does have rather a lot of very large eyes. They hold a lot of anger, but you still feel dumb from flinching as her expression immediately softens and regret appears again.

"Your father and aunt should be watchings you, yes?" she says in the same whisper. "Why are you here?"

"Uh," you take a moment to figure out how to explain. "I glow." No wait that doesn't explain anything. "Auntie, saids glowing is bad. No, wait Auntie saids that the shaman-people wouldn't like that. So she let me go find you. Me and brother." You wave a hand at your brother who is now properly unconscious with his eyes closed.

"YOUR AUN-" Mom starts to bellow at what you're starting to think is her natural speaking volume before catching herself and returning to her whisper, "What glowing?" she asks.

You step deeper into her shadow and see if the glow has turned on. It has not. You try to recall the feeling you have at night when you glow, but you never really stopped to make a study of it so you don't really accomplish much. Finally you manage a minor effect. Your eyes flash with light and you are blinded for almost a minute. Still, you managed to demonstrate magic, kind of.

"I usually only glow at night," you tell your mother, blinking rapidly as your vision slowly recovers.

"Then maybe you should show me later."

You nod in agreement. She looks at your brother.

"What happened to him?" she asks.

"He didn't cover his ears."

Mom looks confused for a moment then flushes and looks embarassed. It's an odd look on a lizard the size of a house. Well, not your house. Actually, this explains why your house was so damn big. She covers it quickly though and tells you that you're going to ride her back home.

"Make sure he's okay and then bring him along," your mother says lowering a hand to you, "We're going to go see auntie."

You collect your brother, who remains insensate but otherwise looks fine, and get on mom's hand. She places you on her head and after swallowing the last of her alligator wades into the water.

"Don't be afraid to dig your claws in, I'm going to go very fast," she warns you before launching herself forward. You're almost blasted off by the wave of water passing over her before she corrects her depth to keep most of the splash off you.

You assume a basking position and settle in for a nice long soak in the sun.

Mission accomplished.
