You are Kusajishi Riku, and after what could only be considered an extraordinary day you've ended up in the most unusual place you've ever seen.

A lone cherry tree, perched high above a roiling, angry sea on a jagged black cliff. An iron-gray sky lit by wisps of azure flame seeping from the cracked ground, tortured and violated by volcanic forces. And amidst it all, a strange woman who bears nine golden tails. It's too surreal to possibly exist outside of a dream, and yet here you are.

The stranger laughs haughtily, covering her mouth with a small fan produced from one sleeve.

“I suppose I have you at a disadvantage,” she intones, “so I suppose the rules of hospitality demand that I rectify that situation immediately.”

“Tenkotsuki is my name, but you have a long way to go before you have earned the right to call upon it and have me respond, my dear...”

You quickly recover from your initial surprise and the change of scenery from the underground training area where you were just meditating. “And why would I want to call on you, exactly?”

Tenkotsuki laughs again. “Because I, dear Riku, am your true strength. Your life would feel oh so empty without me in it.”

“You're quite full of yourself, aren't you?” you frown, almost refusing to believe this sort of arrogance could come from something that was a part of you.

“If I prove to be as truly magnificent as I know I am,” she counters, “would you still consider it arrogance? Or would it merely be sincerity? Honesty?”

>What is this?
A quest set in the “Bleach” universe's afterlife, the “Soul Society”, some 200 years prior to the events of canon.
>Who are we, then?
Kusajishi Riku, a Shinigami-in-training.
>How closely will this follow canon?
I don't know yet. It mostly depends on you. That being said, be warned: metagaming will not solve any problems. Instead it will likely delay canon events, alter them, or replace them with new problems. Particularly blatant cases of metagaming will be ignored.
>How do names work?
Partly translated for accessibility, with proper names following the Japanese convention of family name first.
>How does I roll dice?
After figuring out what option has won I'll give a dice prompt. Usually rolls will be 3d10 against a set target, first three considered. To succeed, the best of the first three responses must have two passing rolls. A critical success requires three passing rolls. If the best result is one pass, the action fails. If nobody rolls anything that passes, the result is a critical failure. Other die rolls that deviate from this will be explained on a case by case basis.
>”But Queen,” some of you may be asking, “what about that crazy system of Kidō, unarmed, and sword-fighting? Won't that make combat a mess?
When you've learned some techniques I'll start keeping a character sheet with what you know. Write ins for how to accomplish varying actions in combat are always welcome (within reason), and may affect the difficulty and outcome of combat.
>Any other questions?
Lay 'em on me. I'll do my best to answer.

I realized after working out the character design that Alphard was exactly what I had in my mind's eye when writing her.

“So,” you challenge your Zanpakuto, “you gonna yap all day long, vixen? Or are you gonna teach me something interesting?”

After a moment of stunned silence at your rudeness, Tenkotsuki starts laughing her head off behind that little fan of hers before getting herself back under control in an instant. She favors you with a dangerous, quite serious look.

“Unfortunately, your skill at kidō is insufficient to make use of my released state even if I were to explain it to you,” she explains, literally and figuratively looking down on you from her comfy spot under the cherry tree. “You have brute strength in overabundance, but no experience or knowledge to temper it with. To put it in terms of swords, it is as if you are fighting with a blade that lacks any fittings, only grasping the bare tang in your hands.”

“You are absolutely not ready to use my true shikai... however...”

A weapon slowly materializes in Tenkotsuki's hand, complete with sheath and fittings, and she tosses it to you. When it lands in your hand with a satisfying smack of hard lacquer against flesh, you quickly draw the blade.

It's a bit shorter than an uchigatana, which is the typical length of sword you've seen in the Seireitei, being a little under two feet long by your guess. That, and the curve is in the wrong place: it's a bit closer to the hilt, though it's not exactly pronounced. As you test the balance you find it strange, feeling a bit faster to swing and a bit more heavily weighted towards the crossguard than the other blades you've “appropriated” in the past. Its handguard appears as a nine-pointed silver starburst set in a ring of heavy, black iron... a striking effect.

Without a doubt, it's your sword.

“Why now?” you ask her. “What do you want me to learn here? How can I fight with you if you won't tell me how?”

Your Zanpakuto glares at you sternly, her polite image now shattered completely. “There are two things which I despise in this world: only two. The first is the existence of anyone who would dare to assert that their sorcery is greater than my own. The second is seeing you as weak as you are now.”

“You are here to speak with me, to learn my name, and so that I may see how well-suited you are to using that blade,” your vulpine hostess explains, drawing a sword and sheath that match yours from behind her back. “Now, enough idle chatter.”

Tenkotsuki slowly draws her own blade, holding the sheath at her waist and pointing the tip straight at your heart.

“If you have more you wish to ask me, do so with that sword I gave you.”

Kodachi. Quite uncommon to see, almost a novelty.

Few traditional schools focus on them over the standard tachi (like Eishin Ryu and similar old styles) or uchigatana/katana (like Tennen Rishin Ryu and other Tokugawa/Edo period schools).

And I think the answer to this question is, fight dirty. Look for a good chance to do something like throwing dirt in her eyes, try to use the environment against her, fake openings or weaknesses to try and get her to attack in a more predictable way.

In this situation, with an unknown opponent and an unfamiliar blade in your hands... what are you supposed to do? You consider what your Captain would do were she in your position, thinking carefully about how she'd position her feet, and hold her body, and extend her arms.

“So,” Tenkotsuki growls softly to herself, “it seems you will not come to me? Very well then. I shall simply...”

“... have to come to you,” she finishes, already falling upon you with her blade after a mere instant.

Your own kodachi rises to meet hers, and the blades quickly slide towards each other's hilts where you can both apply as much force as possible against each other. It's in that moment, where all progress seems to have halted, that you see your opening.

With a shout you lash out with one leg, pivoting in place and forcing Tenkotsuki's blade away at your side as you deliver a kick to her ribs... only to find her foot has risen to intercept your kick. Both of you carry through to your right as Tenkotsuki's right hand leaves control of her sword to her left hand alone.

She extends her fingers towards you as you tumble, while your left hand instinctively moves to smack hers out of line with your body.

“Hadō 4: Byakurai!”

A powerful flash of lighting streaks past your ear as the side of your hand catches Tenkotsuki's wrist. That was close. If you hadn't been quite as quick that might have been game over already.

You break distance with your opponent with an instantaneous dash, and right yourself with your off hand while Tenkotsuki does the same.

“You catch on quickly, for a novice,” Tenkotsuki compliments you. “Though with me as your instructor it is only natural that you would be able to do so.”

You take a deep breath, before raising your sword and eying Tenkotsuki from a distance.

"This sword... its size and shape mean it doesn't get in the way of hakuda," you observe. "And from the look of it, it's easier to use kidō in the middle of a fight if you can parry or bind your opponent's blade."

"Just like you did to me just now."

Tenkotsuki smiles, bowing gracefully to you. "This combination of techniques is the most basic element of my power, Miss Riku. It will take you a long time, perhaps many years to fully master its intricacies. But even un-mastered, it possesses flexibility and power that should be the envy of any warrior."

Your Zanpakuto sits very formally, returning her sword to its sheath at her side. "You have earned the right to ask my magnificent self one question."

"So what kind of questions am I allowed to ask?" you ask your Zanpakuto.

There are several long moments of silence as Tenkotsuki stares at you in disbelief, where all you can hear is the faint sound of hissing steam from all around you.

Finally, after what seems like it could have been an eternity, you start to laugh. Tenkotsuki slowly joins you, covering her mouth once more with the fan.

"But seriously," you continue, "do you think at some point we'll be friends?"

Tenkotsuki shrugs. "What an impertinent question. I am a part of you, Riku. I was always with you, and I will always be with you. So long as you are at peace with yourself and with the path you choose, you will always be able to hear my voice."

"And so long as you may hear my voice, we shall always be able to take each other into confidence."

"So..." you frown. "Is that a yes, or a no?"

Tenkotsuki smiles, rising back to her feet and drawing her sword in one fluid movement. "I will show you the answer to that question with my blade."

You're not sure how long you spend crossing blades with Tenkotsuki in this strange, yet peaceful world. It could have been minutes as easily as it could have been hours. But after a time, she seems satisfied at your progress.

“Remember this when you return to the world outside,” she advises you. “When there is an enemy you must defeat, we must simply prohibit them from expressing a power that exceeds our own. That is all you must know, for now.”

The next thing you know your eyes are open, and you're sitting back on the rock by the little hot spring where you were meditating. Yoruichi seems to have left, so you collect your clothes and head back to the surface.

It's already getting dark, and you're not totally sure how to get back to your apartment from here. And on top of that, you're already hungry for another one of these amazing Seireitei meals. After that breakfast, who knows what these people could do for supper?

Your grumbling stomach tells you exactly what you need right now: food. So you immediately set off to find a food stall or restaurant or something to fill the deep void in your gut.

A ways from the large hill you find a promising-smelling noodle stall called “Akamitsu”, which you invite yourself into. Wait... you can read the sign? Since when are you even literate? You ponder that question as you take a seat next to a tall, thin-looking man with long white hair and a white coat: the number on his back is “13”.

“I'll have... I guess kitsune soba, please,” you request, unused to actually ordering food like a regular person. “Make it a large one.”

“Soba, hm?” the man next to you observes with a gentle smile. “They make it well here, if you enjoy the taste of soba. I can never get any of the other Captains to come with me, though.”

Your meal arrives, steaming hot, before that statement even registers with you. “Wait, so you're a Captain?”

The white-haired man nods, a look of surprise on his face. “Yeah, I am. You must be new if you don't recognize the white coat as belonging to a Captain. Ukitake Jūshirō, Division Thirteen.”

“Kusajishi Riku. Well met, Captain Ukita... oh,” you realize suddenly that you still don't have any money on you. You were gonna fence that sword before a certain black cat dragged you off here to become a sword-swinging ghost magician, and you never got the chance.

Captain Ukitake nods knowingly. “I see, you must have left your money in your quarters, right? I'm in a good mood today, so I'll tell you what. As a newcomer into the Court Guard I'll treat you this once. All you can eat!”

>Sure, but I hope you know I've been training all day, so I'm really hungry.

Byakuya probably isn't going to show up for a fairly long while, assuming the timeline doesn't get shuffled around. I'm guessing his Grandfather is already Captain of the 6th, not sure if his father is the Lieutenant or not.

It's about 90 years before Yoruichi meets him, and another 60 or so years before he becomes a Captain.

So amusingly enough we could end up something like an aunt to him.
>>
>>39095212
Pretty sure we could be some kind of older figure to most of the current captains. This is a whopping 200 years before canon after all.

“Well,” you admit with a frown. “I guess you could say I'm on provisional status.”

“That's fine. The offer still stands.”

You nod, grateful for the man's kind offer. “I'll warn you now, Captain. I spent all day training, so I'm pretty hungry.”

“On a Captain's salary?” Ukitake grins. “I think I can handle it!”

Half an hour later, the Captain's face looks almost as pale as his white coat. “How? Literally how?”

“I dunno. Sorry about that,” you pat your stomach as you look over the twenty-four bowls of noodles you emptied in one gluttonous go. “I ate almost as much as my own Captain does.”

“I'd expected as much. You've been meditating for nine days, after all.”

Behind you stands an amused Yoruichi, eying your trail of culinary devastation with a grin on her face. “I see you learned your sword's name?”

You nod. “Yes. Tenkotsuki.”

“I see. Sorry you had to foot the bill this time, Jūshirō,” your Captain apologizes playfully, almost as a taunt. “I'll get you back some other time.”

“Fine, fine,” Captain Ukitake sighs. “It's a student of yours, so I guess it's to be expected she'd have an inhuman appetite.”

“Oh? Is that an accusation I hear, Jūshirō?”

“Simply stating the facts, Yoruichi,” Ukitake smiles. “Train well.”

“Can I see it?” Yoruichi asks you as the two of you walk back, presumably towards your barracks. “Do you know the calling word?”

Hmm, "Blitz"-ing almost comes to mind due to the Wehrmacht using fast-striking, multi-pronged assaults in its most effective offensives. Especially since our sword enables us to strike with not just the blade but also everything else we can use right now.
>>
>>39095420
>Sure. I think it was... (Take a guess? I'll let you know if you get it right)

I'm guessing it has something to do with the last thing she said.

>“When there is an enemy you must defeat, we must simply prohibit them from expressing a power that exceeds our own. That is all you must know, for now.”

Hamstring, or Cripple, maiming the opponent so they can't use their actual strength fits her advice.

Alternatively maybe, Restrain, or Obstruct.

You're angry at first when you realize that Tenkotsuki told you of no such thing... before you start to reminisce on what she did tell you. Particularly interesting is what she said to you right before you woke up from your nine days in meditation.

“Prohibit, Tenkotsuki!” you command, with as much confidence as you can muster. Thankfully, you watch as your blade flashes in the moonlight, shortening and bending into its initial release form. Somewhere, a part of you chuckles at the fact that you actually figured it out all on your own so quickly.

“A kodachi!” Yoruichi exclaims with an appreciative whistle. “The balance means it's responsive and good for parrying, while losing little of its cutting ability. It won't get in the way of hakuda and kidō, either... and the sheath changed to match it?”

“Isn't that normal?” you ask, rolling the sheath around in your hand. Sure it feels nice and sturdy, but it can't be that odd.

Yoruichi shakes her head. “No. Most Zanpakuto don't come with a sheath of their own in shikai. I'm guessing there's a lot about this sword she hasn't told you? Do you know if it does other stuff?"

You nod. “The vixen told me I don't know enough kidō to use her shikai properly, so she just gave me the chance to get used to the shape and balance.”

“I see. She must be a kidō type that modifies your spells somehow, probably to make them easier to use in battle alongside other techniques. Tricky to master, but probably very strong.”

“I feel a lot better after the healing springs and the food,” you yawn, stretching your limbs. “But I'm still tired. Must be from overeating."

>>

>>
>>39095935
Then you look at your arms again, finding that there aren't even any scars. In fact, a quick look around your body reveals that most of your old scars are gone as well.

“Huh. My scars are pretty much gone,” you observe. “That a side-effect of the healing pools?”

Yoruichi nods, before placing a finger right between your shoulder blades. Your body feels sore there, almost as if an old wound is very close to re-opening. “All gone, 'cept this one.”

“Captain Unohana told me something once, that scars which carry strong feelings never fade,” Yoruichi tells you, her tone unusually sober and pensive as you walk on. “Least, not 'til the memories do. To carry that scar with you even after death... you must've truly hated the one who gave it to you.”

You give the notion some thought as you near the barracks. Really, you're not quite sure how that makes you feel, aside from unusually thoughtful. Almost... dare you say it... philosophical?

>Of course. How could I ever forgive someone for killing me?
>I don't remember it at all, so how could I hate them?

“I dunno that it was hatred,” you admit as you walk into the building, heading for your respective rooms for the evening. “Hatred's not the only strong emotion... desperation, maybe? Determination?”

Your eyes widen a little as the ghost of a memory, the imprint of your final moments of life, flickers in your mind like a candle before fading again. “No... regret. That's what it feels like to me.”

Yoruichi stops abruptly by the door to her room, her eyes aimed at the floor by your feet. “Riku... I have something I need to tell you. It's not easy for me to say it, but you need to hear it. And I need to be the one that tells you.”

You nod wordlessly, not entirely sure what to do in a situation like this.

“Some years ago there was a Sternritter: a Quincy musketeer of great power and skill. You remember what I said about them, about how we were once at war with them over the fate of the world. Many in the Fourth Division, including its former Lieutenant, were killed by this Quincy's skills without ever even seeing her face. She was herself killed in the last engagement of the war when a Captain stabbed her through the heart, as she bought time for her allies to escape.”

“This Sternritter, who called herself Rosa Rosette, “the Refusal”, knew she was dying. But even knowing this, she forced her broken body to keep fighting using her own spiritual energy like puppet-strings, rather than giving up and allowing her comrades to die. The Captain was deeply moved by that selflessness, and has lived with her doubts and regrets over the war ever since.”
(1/2)
>>
>>39096517
Yoruichi no longer stands before you, but instead is behind you, one finger gently placed against your back. “After seeing your movement techniques, which aren't shunpo? After watching your absurd rate of growth? And after seeing that your scar didn't disappear in the healing springs, I know now: the Sternritter who died back then was almost certainly you, Riku. And the Captain who killed you?”

“I'm sorry, Riku, but that was me. I stabbed you through the heart, right here.”

You turn to stare at your Captain in surprise. She doesn't meet your eyes, but you can tell she's not lying. Too many questions run through your mind, words pile up behind your teeth until you're sure an incoherent ramble is about to start leaking out through them. You need to get a grip, Riku... one step at a time...
>How long have you known?
>Why did you kill me?

>Nope. I can't do this right now.

Hell, Yhwach didn't even have his heart beating again.

You can ignore the word if it bothers you that much. The fact remains that the final "extermination" of the Quincy is canonically around 1800 or so, and there would have undoubtedly been very strong Quincy present.

You don't let that shit keep happening when you're in a wartime situation.

"Wait... are you sure you've got the right person?” you sputter, still not quite believing what you're hearing here.

Yoruichi's response is to sink a short knife into the floor in front of you. “I use knives like this when I fight seriously. It would've left a large scar on the back with nothing on the front, just like yours. And since you've been looking more and more like her since you cleaned up, filled in a bit, and grew stronger? I'm pretty sure.”

Your mind reels as you start to understand: this is for real. She's not lying, and she's not wrong. All evidence points towards the fact that you were once a Quincy named Rosa, and that Yoruichi is the woman who took your life.

“How long have you known?” you press quietly, your knees shaking a little under you.

Yoruichi sighs, guiding you into her room where you practically fall to your knees. “That you were once a Quincy? Since I saw you use hirenkyaku, which unlike shunpo gathers spiritual energy near your legs and feet. Your poor control over that powerful energy is what damaged your clothing.”

“As for how long I knew that I had killed you? Since the healing springs. It took me a while to come to terms with it... the chances seem so astronomical. But I couldn't deny it, as hard as I tried.”

The Captain seems exhausted as she settles into her cushions, lighting a few candles with a little ball of kidō from her fingertips. “I'd be confused too, in your place. Ask away.”

“Why did you take me in like this?”

A sad smile. “Regret, partially. I knew you were the soul of a Quincy from the start. That was enough. But there's another side of it. You remember what I said about Shinigami?”

“That you're not all kind?” you ask.

Yoruichi nods. “I figure if we can't help one person, why are we so strong? If we won't even try to make our actions right, then do we deserve our power?”

At the same time, it was a war. So it was not a murder. Both sides knew what was on the line and was prepared to risk everything.

Besides, since most of the regrets, memories and any other thoughts gets washed away when they move into Soul Society, Riku is Riku, not Rosa.

The problem is that Quincy powers, although we don't know this yet IC, don't destroy Hollows. They just feed the souls to their dickass leader, which makes it seem like they get destroyed but instead just end up as lunch.

Then again, things might be different from canon because any soul tagged with Quincy shit, the Quincy not being exempt from this, gets fed to their dickass leader. And since we're not currently soul food, we're probably safe.

Maybe.

Fucking Kubo.
>>
>>39097449
In that case, wouldn't it have been better to structure that session so reader choices determined that, rather than die rolls? If the rolls had landed on an option that both you and the readers found less interesting, the quest would just be worse. I don't think this is a good thing to leave to the dice.
>>
>>39097648
Technically we know that Yhwach doesn't eat all dead quincy, because Mayuri got his hands on the soul of grandpa Ishida, and did horrible things to it, remember?

We were so strong that fat fuck didn't manage to eat us and our soul was significantly weakened which is why we gain power so fast, we aren't developing our power we are just recovering from nearly getting nommed.
>>
>>39097559
At the very least, Hat and Clogs is likely to get distracted by the possibility of Shigami/Quincy instead of making Vizards and the plot rock. We may have irreversibly derailed canon by thread 2.
>>
>>39097648
I'm not sure we know that OOC yet. I mean it's extremely likely that that is the case, but we haven't had it stated that being killed by Quincy energy is fed to Yhwach, but then again, and this is an alarming point, we also have no proof that hollows killed by shinigami are purified, and not fed to the Soul King. I mean they're said to lack all memories of being a hollow, and we never saw Orihime's brother, did we?
>>
>>39097180
“Yoruichi... you've lived with this for years, haven't you?” you ask quietly. “The guilt over what you helped to do, despite having what sounds like no choice?”

“That's right.” The woman across from you shuts her eyes, apparently deep in thought.

“Don't you think it's time you let yourself move on then, Captain?”

At your words her eyes open again, slowly. “What?”

You sigh, rising to your feet and turning your back to her. “Letting yourself get weighed down by guilt is no way to honor the dead. You have to lead by example, so let your actions reflect the changes you'd want to see in the world.”

“If you did that, I'm sure even Rosa would forgive you in time.”

“Even if you're the one saying it,” Yoruichi replies with a chuckle, “it doesn't sound easy, Riku. Much harder than if you said you hated me.”

“But the fact that it's tougher makes you want to do it more, right?” you ask with a weary grin.

Yoruichi claps you on the shoulder. “Yeah. You're damn right.”

I assume that's more Kubo forgetting non-Ichigo cast members and their backstory/motivations exist, as opposed to something intentional. I mean you could chalk it up to a very long-running Kubo ruse, but it doesn't involve Aizen in any form or way so it's not actually going to turn out that way.
>>
>>39097764
"But still," she mutters, "you bear that scar."

You shrug. "Like I said, I feel like the emotion there is regret. Maybe Rosa regretted not being strong enough to win. Maybe she regretted killing those Fourth Division people as much as you regretted killing her. I can't say for sure, and anyway it's a memory from a past life."

"May as well have happened to anyone else. It has no meaning to me at all."

Yoruichi nods thoughtfully. "I see. I guess I was the only one seeing anything in it."

As you slide the door open to your room, your arm is caught in Yoruichi's hand.

"So, knowing who I am, and what I've done," she asks, "not just to you, but to others as well, can you still call me Captain so easily? Until you're strong enough to stand next to me as a Captain yourself, can you stand behind me as my Lieutenant?"

Spring, 1838.

You've almost lost track of how long you spent in training with Yoruichi and Kisuke. More and more you've been allowed to go on missions around the Seireitei and Rukongai with the Patrol Unit of the Stealth Corps: the men and women you're set to lead one day as the incumbent Unit Commander and Lieutenant of Second Division. But today is different.

Today, you're going to the living world on a mission.

"You'll be going ahead of the Kidō Corps," Yoruichi explains to the gathered teams, who are all in fully-enclosed black uniforms aside from yourself. She's no longer speaking as your friend and mentor: in front of her subordinates, she has a part to play as the Executive officer, and she plays it well. "Part of the city of Osaka has been burned in a rebellion. The Academy wants to send its first-year students there to learn how to perform soul burials on some of the victims, but needs the area secured from any Hollows that might come expecting a free lunch."

"Your mission is to go to the designated area in the living world, exterminate any Hollows you find, and then stay on site while the Kidō Corps deploys and maintains their little barrier."

"Any questions?"

As you bow in acknowledgment of your orders, Yoruichi catches your eye. Despite her position, and being in full view of her subordinates, she gives you a little covert nod. Barely perceptible to most, but you've seen her do it before. It's her way of wishing you luck without calling attention to it.

Such is the nature of things now, when the attention of the Shihōin Clan and its vassals has finally fallen upon you.

As you hurry with your team towards the gate that will send you to the living world, you pass by the Fourth Squad relief teams that are standing by in case they're needed. Their Captain, Unohana, smiles at you as you pass... but behind that smile, you sense something truly dreadful. Being near her has never been comfortable these last three years, and her mere presence makes you feel as if you have a knife pressed against your throat.

“Please remember to be careful,” she tells you in that deceptively gentle voice of hers. “It would be unfortunate if there were any... accidents.”

You're pretty sure that means she's quietly hoping you don't come back.

“Well, here we are then!” the man you're pretty sure goes by the name Okuro Fēng announces. “Let's get to it.”

“Right behind you, brother!” his brother Okina nods confidently. “We'll show everyone what a clean sweep looks like!”

“So this is Osaka?” you mutter staring around at the burned ruins of shopping arcades and residences. Some have a wall or two intact, but are utterly gutted inside. The slow, steady rain doesn't do much to make the place look any more hospitable.

“It was,” Okuro comments. “Hollows love to hunt in places like this. Be on the lookout for anything suspicious. Footprints, strange pressures, ghosts of the former residents here.”

You nod. “And our plan if we're attacked?”

“Simple,” Okuro tells you. “Send up a flare with your kidō if you can't handle it, and the rest of us will hurry there. Goes for all of you.”

“Clear?”

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. We've repeatedly had sets where we were just one away from getting a crit.

This part of Osaka's pretty flat, but there is a small hill with a shrine at the top that's managed to escape the flames, for the most part. You make a beeline for it, sitting at the top of a pagoda where you can see for a good distance all around.

It all looks the same to you, without the people who'd normally be filling the streets. It's all dead. But amidst the few wandering souls of humans you can feel, you notice something off... something evil.

You use your flash st... your hirenkyaku, rather, to track down the disturbance.

It's a lizard. Or rather, it's a tiny Hollow that looks like a lizard.

"Almost cute, aint it?" Okina observes as he appears next to you. "We see these guys from time to time, little animals that crawl out of Hueco Mundo. They're harmless, but still. Kinda impressed you could sense something that small."

>We should still exterminate them.
>Have the others found anything?

I guess some hollow might be using them to scout or something... but rampant extermination seems to cut a little close to home. See if they're actually dangerous first.
>>
>>39099426
"I thought hollows were human souls twisted into monsters? Even if it's harmless, I'd hate to leave a person in such a sorry state."

Really, knowing what we do to hollows would only increase our desire to kill them all, with our already innate Quincy zealotry.
>>
>>39099426
>We should still exterminate them.
>It'll give us something to do even if there's nothing to do.
>>
>>39099546
Remember that as far as we know both IC and OOC, killing a hollow doesn't destroy it, but instead cleanses it of its sins and allows the person it once was to move to soul society. Which, while certainly no heaven, I feel is at least a moderate improvement on being a shitty lizard thing.
>>
>>39099610
Second
>>
>>39099610
Like I don't know, I feel like aiming to purify every hollow we see as long as it doesn't detract from our mission or put our allies in danger is something that we should focus on, at least until someone gives us a good reason not to do so.
>>
>>39099426
“Harmless, huh?” you ask, moving to scratch the lizard's head. "I could almost keep one as a pet or something."

It bites your finger, but doesn't actually do any damage. Instead it just hangs comically off your finger, gnawing fruitlessly as your comrade chuckles. “Pretty much, yeah.”

Eventually the tiny Hollow figures out exactly how outmatched it is, and its empty eye sockets widen in terror. It shivers in fear as you lean in real close to it.

“Boo.”

With a little skree of hopelessness the Hollow lizard releases your finger and throws itself to the ground, vanishing through a shadowy little portal back to Hueco Mundo, the realm of the Hollows.

“Still, it feels bad leaving any soul like that,” you mutter. “From what Yoru... I mean, the Executive's told me they're suffering.”

“Find any more Hollows hiding around here and cleanse them,” you order. “Make sure this place is clean by the time we're through.”

Okina nods. “We've still gotta tell the Kidō Corps they can come through, though. Can't exactly hold them up cause of a few stupid lizards.”

“Fine,” you allow, “but we're staying on site anyway. By her orders.”

“Of course”.

The twelve Kidō Corps experts, each of whom wears a strange white garment that mostly covers their face and shoulders, are the first to arrive. Without speaking to you they disperse in the four cardinal directions, quickly and efficiently putting up the barrier. Even as your team continues to search for Hollows, the students begin to arrive. Their white uniforms with blue hakama for boys and red for girls is strikingly different from your own: you remember seeing them in your brief token trips to the Academy for examinations and a few seminars.

Two of the students stand out: one girl in red hakama with half-framed reading glasses sitting low on her nose, and a taller young man in blue hakama with short-cropped hair and a vivid scar on the side of his head, just over his ear. Both of them feel stronger than the rest, and seem to have learned the names of their swords already.

They approach you quickly.

"Kusajishi Riku, Onmitsukidō Patrol Corps. You the student instructors?"

Both of them nod.

"Shiba Kaoru, fifth year," the brown-haired girl with the glasses greets you in a smooth, even tone. "Please look after us."

"An I'm Nikko Kai, sixth year," the young man greets you roughly. "Anythin to report, miss Stealth Corps?"

>Not really anything you should worry about.
>This place feels off somehow. Keep your students out of the alleys at least while my team works.
>There was at least one Hollow lizard here. We didn't find anything else, but we're still looking. Be careful.

Yeah, that's why I said that it's a bad move that we haven't learned Shunpo yet. Even if we don't really identify as a Quincy anymore, using Quincy techiques is a great way to make enemies.

Well, Yoruichi did notice, and I expect that Urahara noticed or would've noticed if he didn't find out through the blood thing.

I hope that part of the training we did during the past decade makes it harder to tell the difference between them.

Your hirenkyaku are more refined by now, making it harder for anyone less well-versed in shunpo than Yoruichi herself to tell the difference. Though, a few Captains may be able to tell that something is off.

You nod. “It may be nothing, but I feel like something's wrong here. My team is still poking around, so try and keep the firsties from wandering off too far, yeah?”

Sure enough, even as you look the students have already started to spread out. Some of them slash-stepped off the second they set foot in the living world. Not like they're fast enough to escape if you wanted to round them up, it's just they went in literally every direction.

“Wrong how?” Kai presses. “You find any Hollows round here?”

“Just one, a little lizard,” you explain.

The man nods. “I see. Seems too damn convenient, lookin' round at all this, don't it? Jus' one lil lizard?”

Kaoru gives you a nervous smile. “Still, we're not exactly pushovers you know. Keep in contact with us, and we'll...”

The young Shiba's words are interrupted by a scream from somewhere to the north. Right before your eyes you can see the barrier starting to break down to that side, as the aligned energy barrier shatters.

“The hell?” Kai mutters. “The hell is this shit?”

“The northern team must have been attacked,” Kaoru theorizes. “But did you sense anything, Kai?”

The young man shakes his head nervously. “No. You, Miss Kusajishi?”

Strange enough... you didn't. “That same ominous feeling. Nothing specific. Call your students back.”

Even as you send up a kidō flare, and the student instructors do the same, you realize what it is you've been feeling. With the barrier down, Hollows can now enter the living world freely in this part of Osaka. And as you watch the sky itself unzip and roll away, revealing an inky black void on the other side, one does exactly that.

It's huge! Bigger than anything you've even heard of! Just its long, pointy nose must be twenty feet to the tip! As it breaths the fresh air of the living world, it lets lose a powerful, reverberating cry. A war cry... or perhaps a hunting call?

“Hey, bookworm,” Kaoru practically whispers. “What's that thing?”

Kai seems almost too stunned to speak. “Menos... Grande...”

As the great beast pushes itself out into the world it gives a second cry... and you begin to feel its spiritual pressure. It's greater than yours.

"What the hell do we do against something like that?" Kaoru wonders aloud.

Kai responds by releasing his Zanpakuto. "Beat, Kamitinbe!"

His sword is replaced by a short spear with a broad, sword-like head, and a polished turtle's shell on his left arm. The look on his face is one of grim determination.

"Sing, Hanahonō!" Kaoru declares as her blade glows, straightening and splitting into a two-pointed, tuning-fork-like spear.

Both students turn to you as you let your full spiritual pressure free, drawing out your own sword. "Prohibit, Kitsunetsuki!"

"Don't doubt yourselves," you advise them. "Don't hold back, don't give in to fear. Otherwise..."

"... you'll surely die."

We keep nailing those rolls and choices I guess.

The d10's at the start were to see who scouted us, who we were in the past, and who we killed?

I have no idea how strong a Gillian is even supposed to be. Like the vizards made short work of an army of them, but maybe the vizards are supposed to actually be strong despite the things that keep happening to them?
>>
>>39100646
How familiar with the other Captains are we?
>>
>>39100646

>>
>>39100681
Who scouted you, who you killed, and who killed you. The result of all those twos exactly where you rolled them was a very complicated history with Yoruichi. At this point, rather than becoming rivals or enemies, you're set to work very closely with her and her commands in the future.
>>
>>39100717
Usually captains or some of the stronger lieutenants are required to take down a gillian.
>>
>>39100717
Yeah I have no idea either. I mean shit. Bleach killed the damn thing the first time he saw one.
>>
>>39100717
The Gillian was hyped to be a super strong badass that would be hard to fight. Of course with the escalating power levels of the cast, they just got pushed aside pretty quickly.
>>
>>39100717
Vizards are strong, I think most of them were captains or lieutenants in canon, they only actually matter on the kubo scale with the masks, though. And since they went up against the Arrancar and Aizen's ilk they were a bit outmatched. Of course the canon Captains when Ichigo were around seem to be exceptionally strong even for captains, quadruply so for the Old Man.
>>
>>39100717

Gillians can stomp most unseated shinigami. They tend to be slow cannons however.

Seated ones, it depends on power level, but Lt. level ones should be able to handle them
>>
>>39100724
You know their names and faces.

>>39100693
Somewhere in the middle. Shorter than SoZ, because that got harder for me to write the longer it ran, but longer than Kancolle, because there's more plot to cover.
>>
>>39100743
now we just have to win over Unohana, shouldn't be too hard right guys?
>>
>>39100819
Going to be honest. Every time I see someone complain about long quests I'm tempted to tell them they really don't have a reason too. I know a dude who has been gming the same quest with at least daily story updates for two fucking years.

Unohana is scary, yo.
>>
One story update per day in hte least. Extremely rarely there are even two.
>>
>>39100717
I think a solid Lieutenant is supposed to be able to take down a Gillian.

They have a lot of spiritual power, can shoot serious beams, and are fucking huge, but they're slow and predictable.

Captains can bitchslap Gillians without trouble, but can have trouble with the Adjuchas which are a step above Gillians. Power levels.
>>
>>39100843
>>39100847
I prefer em long. I wasn't complaining about length. I was hoping for more.

Sort of sad this may not become a monstrosity that spans a hundred or more threads.. but such is life.

quincy manipulate and weaponize spirit stuff the entire spirit world is made from. we'd probably be able to have infinite reiatsu if we learned how to synch that with our shinigami powers.
>>
>>39102191
I don't think that level of control is possible without Vollstandig/Letz Still. Also, have a hunch that the more we use our Quincy powers, the stronger Yhwach will be when he wakes up. And god damn do we not want that asshole around. I wonder if we'll notice when his heart starts beating again?
