You are Giles, Master Thief, mediocre brother extraordinaire, and professional dancer.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from kind-of party guest to fugitive.

You camped in the woods last night, using what little you had to get everyone through to the morning.

After some discussion, it was decided that what you have isn’t going to cut it. So you went into town accompanied by Laura because she doesn’t quite trust you yet.

The trip went well. In fact, other than all the heavy lifting you might say it was actually fun. Until the end of course, where you went to leave the town only to find you were locked in…

The wheels of fate are in motion, but the whim of a Devil is a wrench in their gears.
Do you have what it takes to stop them turning?

“Ooooo…Right there! That’s i- ahhhh…” Laura moans.
“Told you I was good at this…” You say.
“MmmmmmmI belieee-heeeve you…”

You work her shoulders a little harder now that you’ve gotten the worst of the kinks out.

“Mmmmmelissa ss-said you were good… she never told mmeee that you were thiss gooooood…” Laura says.

This started a few minutes ago. When Laura calmed down a bit, it was pretty clear that neither of you would be sleeping any time soon. So you offered to give her a shoulder rub.

She was reluctant at first, but now-

“Mmmmmmm…”

Yeah, not so reluctant.

Laura is still up on cloud 9 when a knock comes at the door.

“Odd, didn’t think anyone would be bothering us. Do you think it’s the uhh… the noise?” You ask.
“Silence is ssssstill up.” Laura says, lazily rolling her head.

If this is someone who knows who we are we really need to get better at disguising ourselves.
Presumably the apparent lack of noises coming from the room tipped them off.
Or it's just Cassandra. It could literally always be her.
>>
“I’d better see who it is.” You say, easing your hands off her shoulders.
Laura whines. “Do you have to?” She asks.
“Yes? If it’s not important I’ll get right back to work.” You say. “Wig”

Laura pouts and throws her brown wig back on, then she releases the silence she cast on the room. When you're sure that everything is in order, you open the door.

Oh fuck.

“Excuse me sir, sorry to bother you. Lord Melvitch has instructed us to do a check in on all travelers in light of what’s happened in Analask.” The guard says. He doesn’t worry you, but the fact that he has 5 buddies with him does…

“Uhh… not a problem.” You say. You can’t take 6 of these guys on your own. You could maybe make it away if you could get a Dark Fog off, but all your enchanted daggers are in your cloak, which you are not wearing…

“First of all, could I get your names?” He asks.

Well, that’s about the worst thing he could’ve asked…

If the guard actually checks this with the innkeeper there could be trouble. You name could also be among the names of 'co-conspirators' for the whole plot in Analask, though you haven't heard of anything like that yet.

>[ ] Give your fake name
This could make Laura suspicious of you, since you actually aren't supposed to be able to do this.
You could play it off like there's a trick to it, but the suspicion will likely remain

“Tophian and Amelia” You say. Can’t give your real one, even the barest amount of checking will fuck you there… “Will this take long? We are kind of busy in here…”

“You coming back to bed Tophi?” Laura asks.
“Just a minute, sweetie.” You say.

The guard peers over your shoulder, and his face reddens. “Oh,yes. Very sorry sir, just a few more questions.” He says. “What is it that brings you to Catisse?”
“We’re on our way around the Degran sea to visit my family in Alka-Habra” You say. The original story was that you were going to Harth, but they’ll know at this point that Harth would be Laura’s destination.

The guard asks you a few more easy questions that you can answer honestly: when you arrived, whether or not you tried to leave before the gate closed, what sort of stuff you bought.

“Alright, that’s all. Thank you for your time and uhh… enjoy the rest of your evening.” He says.
You tip your head to the guard and close the door. When you turn around to head back to the bed, you step on something.

It’s Laura’s nightgown…

“Ah-heh-heh… Would you mind passing that? I had to make the whole ‘coitus interruptus’ thing look convincing.” She says.
You pick up the nightgown and give it to her, then turn your back. Behind you, you hear the sound of fabric on skin as Laura pulls the covers back and puts her clothes back on.

“So how did you do that?” She asks.

“There’s a trick to it.” You say.
“A trick to giving a false name?” Laura says. “You can turn around now.”
“Ask me what my name is.” You say.
“What is your name?” She asks.
“Giles. Now ask me for a name.”
“Give me a name.”
“Herbert Polliard. See the difference?” You say.
“I think so?” She says.

“It’s about knowing the difference between introducing yourself and giving a name. When he asked for our names, he didn’t want mine specifically. So I gave him a name, instead of my own.” You say.
“That doesn’t sound so complicated…” Laura says.
“Can I get your name?” You ask.
She concentrates “Laura… damn, never mind.” She says. “Where did you learn that?”
“When the business you do is less than legal, it pays to know tricks that no one expects. Breaking one of the accepted laws of reality on a technicality is something no one would expect.” You say.

“Does Melissa know this trick?” Laura asks.
“No. It was a while after we… parted ways that I learned it.” You say.

Who knows? We might have an odd breakthrough.
I wonder if it's possible to 'store' a spell that releases the fake name when she says her real one; combine it with a silence spell, so no one can hear her actual name.
>>
>>39098258
Geniuses here, watch out.
>>
“I could try and teach it to you properly if you want.” You say.
“No thanks… it seems like a pretty risky thing to use.” She says.
“It absolutely is. Even when you discount the fact that there are times when it absolutely can’t be used, if someone catches you using a fake name getting exposed is the least of your worries.” You say.

“Yeah… for a second there I thought that you were... you know…” She says.
“A devil? I thought you might. But I didn’t really have much of a choice.” You say. “It was either risk you thinking badly of me, or risk both of us getting caught. I feel like I made the right choice.” You say.

“But what if I ended up reacting badly?” She asks.
“You didn’t. I trusted that you’d be aware enough to keep your cover if I surprised you, and that you’d be understanding enough to let me explain.” You say.
Laura smiles softly. “Thanks… for trusting me.” She says.
“Not a problem, but if you did want to repay me you could try to teach me that spell.” You say.
“I guess, if you’re feeling awake enough to do it.” She says.
“I am, at least I will be for a while. Worst case scenario I tire myself out and I can go to bed.” You say.

Laura pulls out a crystal arrow and hands it to you, patting the space on the bed beside her. “Come on then, I’ll do my best.” She says.

The idea isn't bad, but if such a spell exists we do not know it. Also since it relies on a spell we ask her to teach us, Laura might know something is odd. I think we have a far better chance to find a genuine trick to make her say something that seems to be her giving her name, but really isn't.

“Alright, now close your eyes. Try to picture a wave of quiet flowing into the arrow.” She says.
“Picture a sound?” You ask.
“Hmm… I guess not, no. Try to imagine it like a raging storm, but where the wave goes all is quiet.” She says.

Alright… here goes.

You try to imagine it, a wave of quiet. Like the calm before the storm… only it’s during the storm…
“You’re forcing it.” Laura says.
“Can’t help it, it’s not the easiest thing to imagine” You say.
“The storm and the quiet aren’t separate things. Imagine the quiet as just another part of the storm.” She says.

You take her advice and try again…
You try to imagine a quiet storm… something like… no, that isn’t going to cut it. Maybe something like a gust of quiet among the storm itself?
“Still having trouble?” She asks.
“Yes. And my leg is asleep now.” You say.

“Care to give it another try?” She asks.
“No, I think that’s enough for one night.” You say, cracking your knuckles. “I did say I’d get right back to work. We just got a bit sidetracked.”
“I thought that was only if it was nothing important.” She says.
“And it wasn’t” You say, warming up your hands as Laura pulls up a chair, placing it so it faces you and sits down in it with her back to you. Wow, you sure had to twist her arm for that one.

Laura lets out a long sigh as you get to work.

“So what kind of stuff did you like to do before going off adventuring?” You ask.
“mmmmm-magic… mostly. I’d deal with all of my obligations as a princess each day, then retreat to my room to practice.” She says.
“When did you learn to handle a bow then?”
“AaaaI’d go to the ranges wheneeeeeeeever I thought I could get awayyy with it.” She says, moaning between words whenever you hit a good spot.
“And did you always get away with it?” You ask
“Nnno… but the punishment was wo-oh! Right there is good… ohh… Sorry. The punishment was worth what I got out of it.” She says.

You try to move a little further down her back, but the gown gets in your way. While it doesn’t seem like she’d mind taking it further than this, it might not exactly be… proper…

“So… I could take this a little lower, but-“
“Yes.” Laura says.
‘-you’d have to take the nightgown off-”
“Maybe.” She says.
“-and get on the bed.” You finally finish.

Laura is quiet for a while. “G-go and stand against the wall.” She finally says, peering back at you with one eye.

You do as she says, facing the wall.
“And no peeking!” She says.
“Yes ma-am.” You say. You’re not sure what she’s worried about, there isn’t exactly much there to peek at…

You hear the sound of her gown hitting the floor, followed by her getting onto the bed. “O-okay… you can turn around now…”
You look, and you see her lying face down on the bed with the sheets pulled up to her waist. Her head is turned the other way, and she’s naked from the waist up.

This is making you more nervous than you thought it would… but you said you’d do this, and you aren’t about to back down now.

Okay Giles, eyes where they belong, hands where they’re allowed to go, and DO NOT FUCK THIS UP.

Okay, no big deal right? Just think of it like it’s Melissa, you should have no problems there…

Except for the kiss she gave you before you left, and the VERY risqué ‘pajamas’ she was wearing when you shared a room…

Okay, maybe not… What if you just imagined she was a guy?

No dice… Her figure is far too womanly for that… And where the sheets end, you can see a little bit of her bu- no! no no no no no… Eyes up front!

Up front like where- no, not there either.

“Is something wrong?” Laura asks.
You try to laugh off your nerves. “No, what makes you say that?” You ask.
“You’ve been quiet for a while…” Laura says, lifting her head and turning it to face you. “Maybe this is too much… we should get some sleep, the gates open early tomorrow and I’d like to be out of here as soon as possible.” She says.

“I can handle it, Amelia. Whatever would we do if someone came in to find me on the floor alone?” You ask.
Laura smiles. “Ah, I had forgotten about your feelings my dear Tophi! Could you ever forgive me?”

Laughing, you climb into the bed next to her and get under the covers. “Always and forever, my dear.”
“Goodnight.” She says.
“Goodnight.” You reply

You fall asleep on opposite sides of the bed.
Well, Laura falls asleep. Even though you said you were fine, you find yourself incredibly aware of your situation.

Even though you’re on opposite sides, she is still very close.
It doesn’t help that a few minutes after she falls asleep, she closes that distance by rolling over and deciding that now is the time for cuddling.

Thank you Laura, your nerves needed this like a spike through the head…

Despite the number it’s doing on you, there is something relaxing about this. You can’t quite put your finger on it, but it’s kind of comfy.

Maybe this is why Klaus used to cuddle with Melissa every night… even though it’s the cause of your rapidly beating heart, it’s also the thing that’s soothing it. You could maybe get used to this… if it didn’t mean Marcellus murdering you in your sleep…

Or maybe it should stay as a one-time deal.

It takes a while for you to fully relax. When you finally do, you feel comfortable enough to return Laura’s embrace.

A short while later, you’re fast asleep.

“Good morning beautiful.” You say, lifting yourself up so she can free her arm. “Ah, but how blessed I would be to awaken to such a sight every morning.”

Laura sits up, then leans down and pecks you on the cheek. “You’re sweet.” She says.

Okay, she got you. You weren’t expecting that.
She hops off the bed. “Come on, get up, get dressed, the gates should be opening soon and I want to get back as soon as possible.” She says, grabbing her new travelling clothes and rushing off to the washroom.

You sit up and let out a yawn. Chances are she’ll be in there for a while, you might as well change out here.

After a few minutes, Laura exits the washroom in her new outfit. “How do I look?” She asks.
“Like you could make the very moons in the sky shake with envy.” You say.
“I’d hope not, that sounds terrifying. You’re still wearing that?” She asks.

You put on most of the things that you were wearing the other night, the boots, the cloak, the gloves. “I know it looks fancy, but I assure you it fits our purposes.” You say. You swapped out the rest of your clothes, leaving the suit that Melissa gave you in your cloak, in favour of something more durable.
“Where did the hat come from?” She asks.
“I’ve had this the whole time.” You say. It’s a lie, your old hat got shot off of your head during the skirmish in the woods. This is a new one that you pulled out of your cloak.
Laura gives you an odd look, which is quickly replaced by a smile. “Whatever, let’s go!”

“Come on, love. Let’s go check it out.” You say.
‘Amelia’ smiles warmly. You guess she likes that nickname… or something.

As you approach the crowd, you peer over any heads that you can. Unfortunately, you aren’t really that much taller than anyone here.

“Any idea what’s going on up there?” You ask one of the other people.
“Yeah, Lord Melvitch himself personally apologizing to everyone this morning since he shut the gates early last night.” The guy says.

At the mention of that, you feel ‘Amelia’ tense up.

“What’s wrong love?” You ask her.
“Tophi, he knows me. He’ll recognize me I’m sure of it.” She whispers as quietly as she can.

I assume he is a busy man. He will probably be leaving sooner rather than later.

Is there another gate? He's probably doing this specifically to find us, should either find an alternate exit or just

You give her a comforting squeeze. “Then let’s go see if we can get breakfast. No sense lugging all this stuff around while we wait for this crowd to clear.” You say
Laura breathes a relieved sigh. “Yeah, that sounds good.”

The two of you break away from the crowd, and you immediately realize your mistake. The guards posted all around are watching you. Only one of them approaches.

“Is there a problem?” You ask him.
“No, just curious as to where you guys are off to.” He asks.
“Well, it doesn’t look like we’ll be leaving for a while. So we decided we’d get breakfast while we wait for the crowds to clear.” You say.
The guard nods.

“My apologies good folk! I felt so bad about last night that I decided that my own presence was required here out of respect for the people. Sorry if I've inconvenienced you further.” Someone says, approaching from behind.

Laura freezes at the sound of his voice.
You turn to face this person. He’s dressed regally, with dirty blond hair, brown eyes and a sharp, neatly trimmed beard.
“But of course, good folk, one can never be too careful about these things…” He reaches a hand out…

Oh you’re fucked.

He rips Laura’s wig off.
“I had thought so. A pleasure to see you again princess, pity about the circumstances.” He snaps his fingers, and the guards mobilize.

Shit…
There’s no way in hell you’re making it out of this…
You could try Dark Fog, but that will only get you so far. The guards on the wall would spot you leaving, and you wouldn’t get far after that.

A fight here is a losing prospect. There’s who knows how many guards here, and you don’t even want to think about how many more will show up if you start resisting.

Last, but not least, you go quietly. They haven’t made a cell strong enough to hold you, nor jailers vigilant enough to keep you in.

Each path has its risks, but you have to do something…

>What do?
>>
>>39102209
Punch the minister in his (probably) fat face, and let draw the guards so she can make a dramatic escape.
>>
>>39102209
Well we fucked up pretty good.

Punch the guy in the throat dark fog on both the guards on the ground and on the palisade.
>>
>>39102209
Take Melvitch hostage, use that to negotiate passage out of the city, maim him if needed to prove a point.

>I'll give you guys a tactical evaluation of this one, since it seems popular.

You could try to take the Lord hostage, and barter his life for your safe passage. But between you and him is Laura, and he doesn't look unprepared for this. Melvitch himself is an imposing fellow, he stands a head taller than you and he's easily stronger than you are. In one hand is Laura's wig, while his other rests upon the hilt of his sword. It's likely that he was a veteran of the war against Delemur that happened a decade ago.

>>39102363
I'm leaning towards a distraction to get laura out, the breaking/sneaking out by ourselves
>>
>>39102363
Before we take him hostage cut his arm muscles/tendons.
>>
>>39102363
Geo for the nads and a strike to the face at the same time, and run if that action fails (drawing the guard away from Laura via Dark Fog).

If underhanded tactics prevail, commandeer his weapon, see if Laura has any spells that might be useful in subduing him and we go from there.

>>39102363
Dark fog, grab laura and gtfo
>>
>>39102384
Yeah; we don't matter, and it's not like we can't escape capture.
>>
>>39102384
Yeah, switching my support to this, since the lord doesn't really seem suited to be easily taken hostage.

You can’t win this battle, but that doesn’t mean you can’t win the war.

You make a note of where each guard is in relation both to you and to each other, then you lean over to Laura and kiss her on the cheek. At the same time you pull out your 5 crystal daggers and slip 4 of them into her hand under the cover of your cloak.

“Run” you whisper into her ear. “Dark Fog!” You shout, making a show of whipping your dagger at the ground.

Under the cover of the dark cloud, you bring the heavy end of your cane to bear against the nearest guard’s head. He goes down in a clatter of armor and steel.

As does the next one.

And the next one.

And then the fog begins to clear, and it’s no longer about fighting.

Now all you have to do is keep them busy until you can't anymore.

Hopefully Laura will be safely away by then.

You try your best to keep it one-on-one as much as possible, throwing the occasional dagger at someone trying to flank you or surround you. But you can only be so aware.

You’re careful to keep it non-lethal. It wouldn’t do to go through all of this trouble only for them to decide that it’s too much work to capture you alive.

A guard approaches you from the left and you whirl about to face him.

But something strikes you in the side of the head, so you roll away instead. Your eye is forced to close to keep the blood from getting into it, but you keep fighting.

You duck under one of their attempts to tackle you and come up with an uppercut to another’s jaw, just as something hard strikes you in the back.

You spin to face whatever did that, and quickly parry a rapid succession of sword thrusts from Lord Melvitch himself. He forces you to backpedal into unknown ground, and you get punished for it when you feel another blow to your head knock the lights out of you.

You’re only vaguely aware as you hit the ground.

Your last conscious thought is about Laura…
You really hope she made it out okay…

And on that note, it's time to end this thread on a cliffhanger like an asshole!

I hope you guys still enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it!

The next thread will be sometime this weekend. I'll keep you guys informed via twitter when I have more information.

As always I'll be sticking around for question time!
>>
>>39102761
Does it ever bother you, Smiley, when the people suggest things that draw from your own options but distinctly avoid anything interesting from happening?

But thanks for the thread dude, I'll see you next time
>>
>>39102761
So uh, could we have avoided this battle somehow?
>>
>>39102761
Thank's for running!

Out of curiosity would he have noticed us if we had stayed in place?
>>
>>39102788
>There were a few different ways to avoid this situation. First and foremost among them would've been to not bring the most recognizable person in the party with you on a stealth mission.
>Not rolling like shit last night and getting lost would've ended with you reaching the gates before they closed, at the cost of missing all of the things that happened during the night.

>>39102791
>If you stayed in place I would have done some rolling on this end to see if Laura could keep her cool, if that went well you would have been clear.

>>39102783
>Not really sure what you mean. I think things have been plenty interesting.
>>
>>39102735
I seriously hope we didn't just klaus ourselves.
>>
>>39102887
We klaused Laura a lot of trouble - I hope we both get away from this okay.

>>39102880
I'm curious about the whole names thing. You said that if you dont have a name by 5-ish, you become a devil. Is that it? Is it too late after that? Giles obviously knows that "Giles" refers to him, does he just not accept that as his name, or can he not?
>>
>>39102930
A devil isn't really something you 'become', it's more of a distinguishment. If you don't have a name by the age of five, it's decided that you lack the mental capacity or have some other flaw that prevents you from accepting one.
That's when they put you out to pasture, better to nip it in the bud than allow a Nameless to grow.

Giles isn't sure why he doesn't have a true name. As far as he's concerned, he's gone through all the steps (Being given a name, and accepting it). He's just as confused as you are.

But he acts like his name is his true name, and he shows the comprehension of the concept that other Devils wouldn't, so he got to keep living.
