Recently: A film crew is documenting your journey. You've just won your 7th badge! Vlad evolved into a Crobat! You are not a princess. Hornbeam has somehow sent a huge swarm of wild Pokemon after you.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just a 1d100. Sometimes you can get a modifier to make a move more/less accurate, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever!

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

Badges: 7

Current Party:
Devon (Houndoom)
Nibbles (Tyrantrum)
Destiny (Kingdra)
Trunks (Trevenant)
Raistlin (Alakazam)
Vlad (Crobat)

Not In Party:
Leviathan (Gyarados)
Zappy Dan (Magnezone)

I'm still a bit sick, forgive my melting brain for any big errors.

You look out over the coast. Wild Pokemon of all shapes and sizes are headed for the island on Hornbeams command somehow. They swarm over each other in a clumsy flood.

“We’re drawing them off somewhere,” you repeat.

Vance is the first to offer an idea. “We could grab a boat, meet them head on at sea.”

“I’ve always wanted to drown on a sinking ship!” Clair’s voice radiates with fake positivity before turning serious again. “The path leading up from there is narrow. We could hold it.”

“What about the hunting grounds? We know there won’t be anybody else there and the trees and bushes can give us cover.” Robin is acting brave.

Jeanine leans over the ledge a bit, and points inland into the island. “What about there?” She’s pointing to a mountain edge. “It’s a bit far, but it looks like there’s a lot of terrain we could take advantage of.”

You think for a second. Not only are all your friends looking to you to make the call, but the camera crew is still rolling too. You guess they’re not going to miss this, despite the danger.

Its not really a assumptiom, clearly they aren't coming, and the only reason for that currently could be not being affected.
If it does affect all pokemon, then we aren't safe anywhere because there are pokemon everywhere. In the forest we at least know what to expect.

I HAVE TO GO TO WORK IN 20 MINUTES, DAMM YOU GOBBLE
>>
Everyone’s looking to you. You act. “We’ll go to the hunting grounds.”

You all rush down the hallway. You’ll need to hurry. You think you can get there quickly if you take a shortcut down one of those steep hills.

Your thoughts are interrupted as you come to a narrow hallway with two shouting voices.

“And I said I won’t let you! When will you start listening to me!”

It’s Prince Arledge arguing with Guile, the gym leader.

“I do listen! That’s why I’m your best student! So let me put it to use!”

Guile is a short man. He looks up at the taller prince, but has to step out of the way of a guard rushing down the hall. “My job is to protect the royal family from threats like this. I can’t do that if you split up. Go back to the safe room and stay with your parents.”

They finally notice you and your friends.

“We’re going to draw them off,” you tell them, answering the question on their face about what you’re doing here. “I’m pretty sure they’re after me.”

Guile’s eye’s narrow. “Why? What did you do?”

Jeanine tries pushing everyone along. “She didn’t do anything. Let’s just hurry, okay?”

Guile steps in the way. “No. I’m staying with the royal family, and that includes the Prince.”

“You can’t stop me,” Arledge says. It’s a challenge.

Guile doesn’t look like the type of person to respond to that sort of tone.

>Convince him to let the prince go with you
>You’re taking the prince. You promise to bring him back in one piece
>Convince them both to come with you

We'll need a strong rearguard. Anything we do will be pointless if they get around behind us, and in numbers like this its pretty much inevitable.
>>
Your hand goes to the prince’s shoulder. “Everyone will just be distracted trying to protect the heir if you’re out there” you tell Arledge. “Go be with your family.”

You see understanding wash over his face. He doesn’t say anything as you and your friends move on by. You look back and see him give you a respectful nod, then follow Guile.

You rush to the hunting grounds. It’s not nearly as scenic this time since you’re on foot, but you’re able to move fast down the side of the large hill. Everyone else manages to keep up too.

From down here in the forested area, you can’t see the approaching swarm. You can feel the wind start to whip around though. It’s going to get noisy.

“They’ll be here any minute.”Robin says. She already has Joltik spinning webs all over.

The director is barking orders. Tim and Erin and rigging up small camera’s around the area. Dave, the cameraman, keeps pointing his incredibly expensive looking one at you. Haunter floats above with his directional microphone.

You see your reflection in a pool of water and sigh. You’re not sure if they’re brave or stupid.

A Fenniken moves out from the bushes, then bolts when it sees your friends. At least no new Pokemon are falling under Hornbeams control, however that works.

Your friends all begin taking out their Pokemon and getting ready.

I wonder if we could combine these. We feel serene when making music, maybe Clair and Jeanine could channel that and amplify it somehow instead of trying to calm to pokemon on their own.
>>
>>39114404
No just her mind. It's much better if those horrible Nega Robin captions become true and she joins team imperium.
>>
>>39114416
That could work. Alright.
>>
>>39114416
The problem is we need people to run interference. I say we send out Devon and have him lay down the law around us while we play the flute.
>>
>>39114416
Then you would have less defender than people needing defending. Thats kinda unproductive.
>>
>>39114446
I hope Kat at least thinks of setting up Sunny Day before the flute playing.
>>
>>39113265
I realized I e-mailed you from my personal account by mistake. Steal my identity, my credit is shite anyhow.

>>39114260
Everyone cover Clair. Psychic reading first. I suspect something chemical since it's not effecting any new 'mon in the area. If that's the case, we're boned.
>>
>>39114448
>>39114446
Here's an idea then. Have Kat, Clair and Jeanine [spoilers]ride Nibbles[/spoilers]. This gives everyone else a single target to defend instead of three and the target can also take care of himself.

Also someone pointed out the problem of noise, the stampede is unlikely to be able to hear the flute. But if Clair can hear the flute she might be able to broadcast that to everyone.
>>
>>39114546
Everyone else consisting of Robin and Vance? that's not going to be enough.
>>
>>39114260
>Everyone should protect Clair. Tell her to try to calm them down
>>
>>39114546
Honestly, against a horde, whoever had the idea of defending a choke point had the right idea. Them being able to come at us from all sides is going to be really hard to deal with, especially since I'm sure by this point Hornbeam is more than okay with killing us.
>>
>>39114546
>>39114568
What if we don't have Jeanine do anything. We instead play the flute while Clair psychically broadcasts it to everything in the vicinity that otherwise wouldn't be able to hear it. In the meantime Robin, Vance and Jeanine actively run interference while we ride Nibbles. We can additionally send out Raistlin and Devon and let them act on their own (after setting up sunny day). Clair can send out Gardevoir and maybe something else whom would need minimal direction.
>>
>>39114610
>Hornbeam is more than okay with killing us.

He said he values human life, but not to push him too far on that. Maybe he's bluffing about being willing to kill or maybe he's lying about valuing humans though

You reach for your flute. “Cover me, I’ll try to calm them down.”

Vance takes up a fighting stance next to his Ursaring. She’s looking grumpy today, but you guess that’s a good thing right now. “You got it. We’ve got your back. Just try to stay calm.”

Clair takes out her Gardevoir and Alakazam. “Why are you so concerned about her choking?”

Jeanine is making gestures for Clair to shut up. Her Bulbasuar, Thistle, mimics the action.

Clair doesn’t seem to notice. “What’s the worst that could happen with some bad flute playing?”

Jeanine makes the gestures much bigger now, and tilts her head to Robin.

“What? Why are...oh.”

Robin, who hasn’t heard any of this, adjusts her eye patch and smiles. “Good job Joltik! You’re really fast and laying down webs now!”

Vance, Clair, and Jeanine all look incredibly awkward and avoid eye contact with you.

Before you can say anything, a few flying Pokemon start pouring into the area. Your friends get to work running interference. It’s only a half dozen, and they look disorganized and not that strong, but you know more will be flooding over the treeline soon.

You could throw your own Pokemon out there, but they’ll add to the noise and you can’t direct them while playing.

You start tossing out your Pokemon. “Devon, Sunny Day! Raistlin, go find some speakers. I need something to help me project.” Both Pokemon get to work immediately as you take the others from their balls.

You almost duck as a Spearow flies at you, but Machoke catches it out of the air the same way Vance caught that Stunfisk. A small burst of water hits him in the chest. He shrugs it off and turns his attention to the Buizel that did it. You see more Pokemon pouring out from the bushes.

“If two Pokemon is a double battle, and three is a triple battle,” Jeanine ducks as her Creed, her Scyther, knocks an attack out of the air, “what would you call this?”

Robin starts trying to count all the Pokemon on the scene. “fourfivesixseven, thunderbolt!” She pauses as she loses track of which ones she’s counted. “Umm, eightnineteneleven.” Eventually she gives up. “A battle royale?”

Clair stands perfectly still as Gardvoir takes down a small bird Pokemon. “Can anyone remind me why she’s the smart one again?”

The banter starts to die down as the number of attackers rise. You’ve waited long enough. You begin to play.

You reach in deep and close your eyes. You’re picturing Meloetta as you play the jukebox tune. The song carries through the sound of battle and calms the large majority of Pokemon in the area. Most seem to disperse in a confused, but non-hostile manner. Devon’s mouth shows bright flames as he growls at any that get too close to you.

You know the flute works now. You hope Riastlin doesn't take too long.

“We saw a lot more than that,” Vance warns as he drops back into a fighting stance.

Just as he says that, a flood of Pokemon start pouring in again. They’re larger, more numerous, and stronger looking too. Looks like they’re coming in waves.

It occurs to you that Hornbeam probably has a view of this fight if he’s able to direct them at your location. Then again, maybe there’s another explanation. It’s hard to make these calls when you don’t have all the information.

“Look for something Hornbeam might be using to see us,” you shout to your friends before putting the flute to your lips.

You glance at the camera crew. The director looks ecstatic and completely oblivious to the danger, even as Vlad down’s a grass type Pokemon that was coming at him.

Your friends are working harder to fight the increasingly strong menace now. You’re seeing more evolved Pokemon pour out.

You play. Once again, you lose yourself in the music. The music flows through you. Despite all the noise and battle, it penetrates through. You don’t even have to see, you just know. You’re able to walk forward freely, and calm follows in your wake.

You open your eyes. Meloetta smiles at you gleefully. Silence fills the air.

“Don’t. Stop. Filming.” The director is pretty far away, but you hear him since he’s the only sound.

The attacking Pokemon have all dispersed for now, but you know there’ll be more any second. In fact, you can already see trees rustling far away. This is going to be a lot.

“Raistlin’s coming back soon,” Clair says. As soon as she says that, he comes in, telekinetically carrying two large speakers. You guess you’ll worry about where those came from after.

“Oh. He said he was coming now.” She looks embarrassed. “Not my fault. He has a funny accent.”

The others are keeping an eye out. Sneasel is rushing through the surrounding bushes looking for anything Hornbeam can use to see you.

“I told him he’d get something good if he found it,” Vance explains.
Robin, Tim, and Erin get to work setting the speakers up. Jeanine and Vance use potions and healing items on any hurt Pokemon. Clair seems to be concentrating on the bushes.

Tim and Erin quickly set up a mic to the speakers. Robin has Joltik power the large woofers. Or are they subwoofers? Or are those just parts of a speaker? You actually have no idea how any of that works. You probably should have spent more time learning instead of stealing.

But you do know how to play the flute. You take a position next to the microphone with Meloetta.

“Come on, Meloetta. Let's do this!” You play a quick tune.

She repeats it.

You do it again and start getting into the groove when you notice how many strong looking Pokemon are coming. They burst out of the bushes and your friends and Pokemon quickly work on protecting you.

Your flute plays a flat note, and Meloetta gives you a funny look.

“Uh, sorry, just distracted.”

You both go back at it, but this time as you’re playing, you keep watching Robin. Some of those attacks are getting awfully close.

Her Gyarados takes a powerful electric attack from a Raichu and goes down, flailing. She barely gets out of the way before putting it back in it’s ball.

You play a terrible, sharp noise.

Meloetta looks annoyed and a little worried. You glance over at your friends. They’re starting to lose ground. You’re starting the think that if you hadn’t done so well earlier, you’d already be overrun.

You’re already seeing your friend’s Pokemon go down, one by one. You pull it together and play again. You have to get this right.

You avoid anything fancy this time and let Meloetta take the lead. She seems to enjoy having you backing her up, and it’s reflected in the music.

Jeanine is grabbed by a vine and starts getting dragged into a bush

You tell yourself to just keep playing. Don’t let it throw you off. You follow Meloetta’s tune and concentrate on avoiding any bad notes.

The dragging slows and the vine loosens, giving Jeanine a chance to slip out.

As you play, the attack again starts to subside. It takes awhile, and not all the Pokemon calm down, but the battle does begin to die down to the point where it’s getting under control. It then goes from under control, to firmly in hand as your friends are able to direct their attention on the Pokemon that aren’t calming down.

You and Meloetta starting winding the song down as the battle turns into a clean up.

A wild Pokemon catches your eye. It’s blending itself into the background, acting different than the others. It’s carrying something, too.

Meloetta looks to her audience for praise, which in this case is the camera crew. They start cheering her on, doing whatever they think she wants.

“Thanks Meloetta,” you say as you hand her the tiny mirror, acting casual. "I'm always willing to perform with you again if you want."

She looks at the mirror. She’s thrilled to see her reflection shining back at her.

Devon comes trotting up and you give him a scratch behind the ear. You lean down close and whisper. “Smell anything coming from the trees behind me? I need you to try to catch it. Act calm until you get close.”

You get up again. Devon looks incredibly awkward. He can clearly smell the anomalous Pokemon, but can’t quite see it. He walks in that direction while pretending not to be looking for anything.

Suddenly there’s movement. Devon explodes into a run. The thing leaps into the bush and he follows.

You’re about to run after him when he comes back, a Pokemon in his mouth. It struggles to get free. It’s holding what looks like an expensive, small camcorder.

Mr. Kroustou shakes his head when you look at him. It’s not one of his.

Devon tightens his grip on the Pokemon and it stops actively struggling. It obviously doesn’t want to make Devon any angrier.

“Don’t be too proud,” Hornbeam's voice comes out of the device, sounding staticy. “This was a test run, and it gave me quite a lot of useful information."

"What's the next step of your master plan? Sending more Pokemon to attack us after sending us on a vacation?"

“Petty insults. The refuge of an unsophisticated mind.”

“Yeah, because you’re really showing how valuable being ‘sophisticated’ is. And you might have won, if it wasn't for us meddling kids!"

“I consider myself a patient man. A scientist who doesn’t let emotion sway me.” Yes, he said that. “But I’m going to enjoy what happens next. I’m going to make you all pay. You, those fools Geno and Emma, The royal family, the short sighted scientific community that shunned me, all you easily swayed fools that put Pokemon ahead of people, everyone!”

You do your best to act indifferent. “If you don’t actually have a plan, you can admit it. I wasn’t expecting much of anything from you anyway.”

“You! You! Very well,” you hear shuffling and cluttering. “I’ll show you early. I hate showing my work when it’s not ready, but I’ll make an exception in your case.”

Kecleon reaches out and picks up the camcorder device and points it at you.

Before you can react, you’re no longer standing in the physical realm. You’re whisked away into the psychic plane that you’ve seen before with Clair’s help.

Except it’s not nearly as clear. It keeps fizzling.

You see a lab. In the lab there are rows and rows of Pokemon in tubes. Each one has a device on their head, and each one is a psychic type, mostly Drowzee. There are thousands of empty spots, waiting to be filled.

A gigantic monitor above it all flicks on. You see Hornbeam in a crowd, wearing a helmet not too different from the one at Clair’s gym. Rows and rows of people start bowing to Hornbeam against their will. You see Pokemon working mines and fields, sometimes to exhaustion or death. You see resources going away from Pokemon centers to human hospitals and clinics and labs. Power in the shape of a needle transfers from Pokemon to people. A person spews flame from their mouth. A person puts a fire out by spraying water. A person grows crops by changing the weather in their immediate surroundings. A massive, grotesque person smashes a boulder with ease. A person takes flight.

Hornbeam walks up beside you and watches the monitor. “We do so much for them that we’ve forgotten that they’re our tools, not the other way around! Once I’m in charge, I’ll be able to make it right. Imagine a world where shipping lanes aren’t routed for an endangered Pokemon. It wouldn’t be endangered in the first place if it was useful, so why do we do it? Why do we leave such small parcels of land untamed? Why do we let legendary Pokemon reign over territories or domains as if they’re gods? We’re the masters, not them! We need their abilities, but not them. The solution is so obvious, don't you think?"

His nose is bleeding. He's obviously straining to do this, but he's so into his monologue he doesn't notice.

You look around. You think this place is both a literal representation of his lab, but also a manifestation of his mind. At least, that’s sort of how it worked with you and Clair.

The world flickers for a second, then stabilizes. Several of the Pokemon in the tubes pass out.

“You have a point,” you tell him, hoping he’ll keep talking. “But I feel like you're ignoring that in many ways, pokemon go as easy on us as we do on them. If you push them into a corner like this... Do you want to see what a Raticate can do to a human body? Or when psychic pokemon decide to stop respecting the sanctity of minds? Or what happens when Arceus sees what you've been doing? What you're talking about is the end of the world, Hornbeam."

“Oh yes, the legendary God, Arceus. Do you know how special ‘legendary’ Pokemon really are?”

You start digging through his filing cabinet.

“They’re not the beings they wish us to believe. They can be caught in Pokeballs, they can be defeated, if with slightly more effort, and they can be improved upon, just like all the rest.” An image of a Pokemon flickers of the screen as Hornbeam grins.

Most of the files are things you don’t care about. How he ties his shoes. His favorite flavor of icecream. Oh here we go.

Devon, Destiny, and Leviathan are the offspring of some of his early projects he worked on. You’re relieved to see that it only seemed to be some sort of generic improvement research.

More Pokemon in tubes faint and you find it harder to read.

“I don’t blame you for not understanding. Not really. Nobody seems to. But all problems have a solution. I’ll simply take the tools I need and and make people either understand, or at least stay out of my way. All I need at this point is more...raw material. And I have a plan for that.” His eyes again flicker to the monitor.

Things are getting really fuzzy now. You don’t have much more time.

He turns to you. “What are you doing?”

You reach deep down into your hateful place. It’s the pit in your stomach when you’re anxious. The nagging feeling that keeps you up at night. Every memory of every time you said something you regretted or embarrassed yourself. And then you think about all the similarities between you and Hornbeam.

A second ‘you’ appears and starts running wild. Hornbeam gives chase. “What is this? Stop that!”

She smashes a computer with a bat. “Where’s the file that describes why you’re impotent?”

You start looking through files. There’s got to be something useful in here. Favorite book character? Oh. It’s Mr. Cedar. You guess that’s where he came up for the name for that actor. A detailed list of what lab equipment he likes to unbox. His favorite recipe. Come on!

Alright. Here’s the good stuff. He was bluffing about knowing who your parents are. You see he has a large scale cloning process in the works. He’s got Geno’s notes on legendary Pokemon and he’s added a bunch of pros and cons about which ones might be worth going after. He’s also got some sort of human/Pokemon hybridization plan in the works, but he’s only had a single volunteer so far.

You feel a sharp pain. He has Other Kat by the neck.

“You’re just as shortsighted as all the rest,” he screams and the world becomes a little more staticy. “You’ll all see!”

Clair appears and grabs a hold of the other you. “We’re leaving. Now.”

They vanish. Only after their gone does Hornbeam turn to you. ‘What sort of trick is this?”

You vanish too.

You wake up, standing exactly where you were before. The Pokemon that Devon is holding drops the device.

Other than Clair’s exhausted expression, no real amount of time seems to have passed.

You walk over to Meloetta. She was admiring herself in the mirror, but she looks really weirded out. “Did you pick up any of that?”

She nods. She saw the whole thing. She didn’t take what happened here too seriously, but she doesn’t like what she saw with the Pokemon in tubes. She looks concerned. Disturbed. Slightly mistrusting.

You’re not sure what to say.

You’re feeling pretty tired, now that you think about it. But you don’t let it show. “I’m going to stop him,” you tell her. “And I want to warn the other legendary Pokemon.”

She cocks her head. She doesn’t really understand that part.

“The ones like you,” you try to clarify. “Unique Pokemon.”

She gives you a funny, sort of condescending look.

“Okay, I get it. all Pokemon are unique.”

Meloetta looks satisfied.

“But Hornbeam has a different view. If you’d like, we could stick together. My friends and I could keep you safe.” Devon comes up to your side. He pushes his head under your hand. You absentmindedly scratch behind his ear. You glance back and see Vance holding the Kecleon.

She considers your offer, but she looks skeptical. It’s hard not to take that as an insult.

“It doesn’t have to be about safety. You could come with us. There’s a place for you here if you want. We could have another duet. I promise I’ll practice.”

She looks like she’s really close to being convinced, but not quite there. Her eyes dart between your friends, all your Pokemon, the camera, and the bushes.

“No pressure, alright? We’d love to have you along, and I’m sure the camera crew would too, but I won’t try to force you if you want to come. If you know any Pokemon that Hornbeam might be after, please give them a warning, alright?” You let her think about it as you whistle the tune from the jukebox and head back to your friends.

She looks entirely caught off guard. While she may enjoy the spotlight, you get the feeling she never really has to work hard to be chased after.

Clair pokes you in the arm. “Why are there two of you?” She looks annoyed and confused.

You shrug. You honestly don’t know. She looks even more annoyed at that. The others have no idea what you’re talking about.

You get your friends together for a private group huddle and explain what happened with Hornbeam. The camera crew seems satisfied to keep recording Meloetta, who looks frustrated and desperate for your attention.

“So what are we going to do?” Vance asks.

“I-I think we need to get stronger,” Robin says. “If today was just him doing tests, he probably has a lot of stronger backup measures. We should train, beat more gyms, and get stronger.”

“I like that idea,” Vance says.

Jeanine seems on board too. “The jungles near Faeden are supposed to have all sorts of crazy Pokemon sightings. It’s a cross section of migratory Pokemon paths, so that makes sense. It’s also home to a lot of old ruins because of that.”

Everyone gives her a look for mentioning ruins.

“I just mean it’s the type of place legendary Pokemon might go, or Hornbeam might look into. We can slow him down without a direct confrontation”

“But can we wait?” Robin says, now unsure of her previous position. “Maybe we should look for him and stop him before it gets out of control.”

“Hornbeam is an idiot,” Clair tells the group. “He was like a toddler trying to work a nuclear reactor.” She taps her head. "He had to actually see Kat to do that. That's why he had the camera. Needing a visual to enter a mind is amateur stuff. I could find you all a hundred meters away if I was blindfolded and deaf."

That's both reassuring and kind of terrifying.

“Well, we should get back to the mainland and figure out our options, but I think we can keep getting badges and training, if nobody is really worried.”

That seems to settle that. Your friends break the huddle. You hope that’s the right call.

You lean back and look to Meloetta. “By the way, Meloetta, have you found anything about what I asked you?”

She looks down, sad. You can tell from her expression she doesn’t have any answers. All she knows for sure is that the Fennikens and a few others don’t know anything.

She looks like she’s expecting you to ask her something else.

“Well, thanks. Let me know if you learn anything else.”

Her expression reminds you a bit of the one Robin gets when her buttons are really pressed. You think the less you ask her the come with, the more she wants you too. It’s driving her nuts.

Meloetta floats alongside you as you start to make your way back to the palace.

You really hate putting it like this because you've been on the receiving end of that sort of comment, but the best way you can think of to describe it is that she's acting like a total girl. She wants you to chase her, but doesn't want to just let you convince her to come without doing something to earn it.

[Sorry I stopped early. I’m still sick. I also won’t be running tomorrow. We should be good for Sunday though.]
