You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

"Man, it's a shame that we couldn't accompany the President any farther." Lara sighs. "It's always a fun party wherever he goes!"

"Christ, I DO NOT want to know what you do on your weekends." Amy sighs.

"Well, it's not like we have the authorization to fly all the way to Usea." Lilian points out.

Apparently, President Harling was a very busy guy. After hammering out some kind economic deal with Belka of which the details you could probably look up later, he was already preparing to head over to Usea to attend an ISAF security conference as a gesture of goodwill. Apparently, the Osean Navy would be handling his security the rest of the way, which meant your escort job was officially over.

And of course, duty calls. No sooner had the President's plane taken off when you received an immediate recall order from Sam. Apparently things were heating up in B7R and your special little brand of air support was needed more than ever. You didn't even have time to say a proper goodbye to Uncle, Milly, or Professor Fleisher.

Currently, you were idling in your Eagle as you waited for clearance to take off. It was just as boring as it sounded.

"Whoa, Valk, it looks like we got admirers!" Lara quips.

"What?" You blink as you look around. Your gaze falls up on the perimeter fence, and you could see a rather sizable crowd of people gathering. Easily at least a hundred or so. Many with cameras or cellphones snapping pictures.

"That is so weird." Amy mumbles, unsure of how to react to all the attention.

"How nice!" Lilian says cheerfully.

"Wonder who they're here for..." Lara wonders.

"Well, all of us, of course." You shrug. "I mean, we HAVE been saving people's necks and asses left and right. Wouldn't be surprised if we picked up some recognition at this point. And have you seen these bitching paint jobs Smokey's guys did? I bet half of them are out here for the hardware alone."

"Hm, that's true. Guess ya got a point there, Valk!" Lara says happily.

"Wait, what are they doing?" Amy asks.

You glance back again to see some of the onlookers raising a hastily made banner. You squint to try and read what's on it and you feel the bottom of your stomach drop out.

"Aaaaaaaaw, how cute!" Amy coos.

"Ah, it looks like you have quite a few admirers, Valk!" Lilian chuckles. "I'm quite jealous that you command so much respect from your underclassmen!"

"Woo, go Valk!" Lara cheers.

Out at the perimeter fence, you could see Professor Fleisher and his students, a few you recognize and a lot you don't, raising a banner with the crudely written words "GOOD LUCK KARLA!"

Oh. My. God.

"T-that's sweet." You manage to croak. In reality, you were embarrassed as hell. Like, there they were, displaying your name in large, crudely painted letters out to everybody who was looking! You were very VERY glad your mask was on, or else it would give away how red your face was. Honestly, you had half a mind to just eject and run away, but you realize that doing so would most likely put you CLOSER to them.

You manage to work up the nerve to wave back at them. At the very least you could acknowledge their efforts. The little crowd cheers and whistles in response.

Oh how you wished that your onboard fuel and munitions would just spontaneously combust right about now.

"Wild Cards, you are clear for takeoff." The tower controller announces. "And whoever's Karla, you have quite a crowd out there."

You then began to calculate in your head the cost benefit analysis of crashing your Eagle into the control tower.

"Come on, Valk, I know you're popular and all, but you're gonna get left behind!" Lara says as the rest your flight begins to taxi to the main runway.

Jolted back to reality, you quickly follow suit.

Well, you might as well give them a bit of a show before you leave. It's the very least you could do.

"Hey, girls, can you circle the airport in formation and inverted for a bit?" You say, trying to suppress a giggle.

"Um, why?" Amy asks suspiciously.

"Because I'm asking nicely?" You retort.

"Oh, I don't see the harm in it!" Lilian says.

"Heh. A bit of a farewell gift?" Lara chuckles, catching on. She all people would know.

"Something like that."

With that, Lara, Amy, and Lilian take off first. As you taxi onto the runway, you see them already getting into formation and begin circling the airport. Finally, your Eagle's engines roar as they push you down the main runway. Once you're in the air, you take position behind their formation.

"All right, now invert and fly straight over the runway."

"Roger!"

The three planes ahead of you then roll so that their cockpits were pointing to the ground and their bellies were facing up. You invert as well and inch closer and closer to Amy's Super Hornet, lowering and raising your plane quickly t give the impression that it was thrusting into Amy's craft.

"H-hey! What are you doing!?" Amy sputters, no doubt looking at her radar and wondering why you were so close.

"Nothing. Just keep straight and level." You smile. You look down to see the little crowd going wild. You sort of wonder what Professor Fleisher things. He was never too big on theatrics.

"Wild Cards, please clear the airspace. we have other air traffic to take care of." You hear the air traffic controller say with a bemused tone.

"Roger that, Tower." You say, finally pulling away from Amy's plane. "All right girls, let's go."

"You're such a naughty girl, Valk!" Lara laughs.

"Indeed. Belkans certainly can be devious." Lilian giggles.

"What... what did she do?!?!" Amy wails.

At this point, you're looking at your flightplan. Currently, you were to return to the Pillar in B7R by taking the most direct route. However, you see one little detail on the map.

AVALON DAM.

"Hey, how about we make a quick detour over Avalon Dam?" You suggest. "Let's get a little sightseeing in before we head back to base? What do you all say?"

"Sure!" Lara says happily. She'd go along with anything, like an excited puppy.

"I don't see the harm." Lilian muses.

"Oh man, I always wanted to see it at least once!" Amy says with surprising enthusiasm. Probably because this was where Belkan War and A World With No Boundaries was finally put to an end by the Demon Lord.

Now, after all these years, Avalon Dam was nothing but an empty ruin. Abandoned after the Belkan War, the facilities here were left to flounder and rust away to the passage of time. As a result, the artificial lake behind the dam never refilled, leaving the old missile silos hidden under the lake bed exposed. However, there was little left. The entire area had been picked clean by the Allied Forces, and whatever couldn't be taken was destroyed.

Nevertheless, it was a mecca of sorts for war history and flight fanatics. Every year fans and admirers would take the long journey up to the abandoned dam just to catch a fleeting feeling of connection to the hero who most likely saved them all.

"All right, it looks like we've got a flightplan." You smile, finalizing your route.

A little while later, and your squadron flies over the bare, empty lake bed behind Avalon Dam. You could see the empty missile silos jutting from the long dried lake mud. You tried to imagine the epic fight between former wingmen and comrades that took place here twenty years ago. Down below, you could see that nature was surely but slowly reclaiming the lake. Trees and grass were slowly growing in an advancing green wave. You reckon that in a few more years, the missile silos would be completely overgrown with brush.

Probably a good thing, in your opinion. Nothing good could ever come from weapons of mass destruction.

"You know... this place is actually kinda spooky." Lara mutters.

"It IS an old battlefield..." Amy points out. "A lot of pilots died trying to assault this place."

"The most we can do is to never forget their sacrifices." Lilian says solemnly.

However, a metallic glint catches your eye. You squint as you try to get a better look, and you catch sight of what looks like... an airplane wreck?

You remember that quite a few planes from both sides were shot down during the fighting here. The search parties never did find all the wrecks, though. Not that they had any reason to, actually. Still, you were curious as to what it might be.

You double check your map and see that there's a small airstrip nearby. Originally built by AWWB to supply the base, it was converted to a temporary HQ while Allied Forces dismantled the missile launch facilities. Now, it was just as abandoned as the damn and the silos, but the runway itself should still be intact...

"Hey, I found a plane wreck people seemed to have missed. I'm gonna go check it out."

"Oooooh, a treasure hunt!" Lara says excitedly.

"Really?" Amy grunts.

"That sounds intriguing!" Lilian says in agreement.

Landing on the runway was a lot simpler than you thought it would be. Though the ride is bumpy, the runway is actually in pretty good shape for the time it's been laying out here without any sort of maintenance.

"We'll have to make this fast." Lilian says, checking her watch. "Atlas is expecting a prompt return."

"Don't worry, we won't take long." You assure her.

In a stroke of good luck, you find a few abandoned jeeps left inside one of the hangars. A bit of hotwiring (from Lilian, of all people) and some "percussive maintenance" was enough to get one of them running, and in no time you head for the plane wreck.

"What do you think it might be?" Lara asks.

"Maybe it's one of the Wizard planes. They never did find all them." Lilian suggests.

"Or maybe PJ's F-16. They only found bits and pieces, but not the whole plane." Amy guesses.

"Heck if I know, any plane is fine!" Lara chortles.

"Lara, stop it right here!" You pat your wingmate on the shoulder. "It should be right there!"

Lara puts on the brakes and the four of you hop out of the jeep. At first, you're not sure what you're seeing, until you see one of the angular wings of the crashed planes. Even the burn marks from fire and a thick coat of dried mud couldn't hide the dulled red paint underneath.

"Oh my god." Amy gasps as she clasps her hands over her mouth. "Is it...?"

"It is!" Lilian's eyes widen.

"Huh? What is it?" Lara looks a bit confused.

There's no doubt about it. Even after having slammed into the ground at speed, set ablaze by unused fuel and munitions, and left to the elements for over twenty years, the plane before you was recognizable as like the difference between night and day.

"...it's a Morgan." You breathe. "Not just any Morgan. PIXY'S Morgan."

"What... what do we do with it?" Amy asks.

You wonder. You could mark the location and request Artemis come out and salvage the plane. You suspect you'd get a hefty finder's fee for the plane, or better yet, might even retain possession of it. Then again, you're pretty sure aviation museums would kill to get a plane like this in their collection.

Or you could just let it lie where it lay.

"Well, no sense just leaving the plane out here to rot." You muse. "A bird like this deserves to fly again."

"Huh, I don't quite agree..." Amy frowns. "Then again, it IS a pretty bitchin' plane..."

"Besides, if Karla found it who knows who else can?" Lara slides in to back you up. "Might as well call dibs on it while we can!"

"I'll mark it down on the map and let Samantha know." Lilian says as she glances at the watch. "Oh dear, we'll have to get moving."

"Right, right." You say and take one more look a the downed Morgan. You're so anxious to see it back in one piece.

The four of you quickly return to the airstrip and board your respective planes. You're a bit anxious taking off without the presence of an air traffic controller to guide you, but at least the airspace was clear out here so you didn't have to worry about midair collisions. The four of you manage to take off with little issue and in no time at all you're back on track.

"All right, I just got off the radio with Sam. She'll be sending a salvage crew over to retrieve the wreck. All hush hush, of course."

"Good to know." You grin.

"Okay girls, heads up." Amy warns. "We're entering B7R. Might as well be in hostile airspace now."

"Heh, bring it on!" Lara chuckles.

No, please, Lara, don't tempt fate like that.

As you engage a hard, high-G turn, you can see three missiles streak past your plane, your quick maneuver getting you out of the line of fire in the nick of time.

"Girls! Status!" You bark.

"One is up." Lara announces.

"Two is up." Lilian says.

"Three is up." Amy reports.

You would breathe a sigh of relief if you had the time to, but you didn't. Your radar was showing three contacts on your tail, and at least another flight's worth engaging your wingmates and keeping you all separated. The worst possible scenario.

"Mayday, mayday, this is the Wild Cards! We need immediate backup!" You yell as you jink your Eagle, a stream of tracers lancing past your wing.

"And here I thought you'd just decide to take us all on at once." You hear a familiar voice chuckle.

"Babylon, less chatting and more shooting." You hear another voice snap.

"Oh, quit being such a stiff, Lancer! Haven't you ever played with your food before?" Bablyon laughs.

"Not when the food has killed my men." Lancer growls.

Your third assailant stays quiet, but continues to try and close the distance between you. You find this guy to be the most unnerving. No quips or banter here. Just cold precision.

This wasn't good at all. You had three ace pilots on your six gunning for you.

"Valk, are you okay?" Lara asks as you see her Eagle dodge a missile fired by the Flanker she's dancing with. "I'm coming to help!"

"We're coming too!" Amy says as she shakes a Flanker off her tail.

F-35 is the US's soon to be newest fighter. It is a multirole, and its three variants, the A, B, and C, are replacing F-16s, AV-8s, and legacy F-18s. Big controversy over it, mainly stemming from program cost overruns. It enters service later this year.

The Su-27 is Russia's main line air superiority fighter. It shows its age at this point, at lacks heavily in avionics. Maneuverable.

The YF-23 was the F-22's competitor. The F-22 was chosen over it. Compared to the F-22, the YF-23 was stealthier, faster, and had superior avionics.

"I can handle these guys. Handle your own battles first!" You assure them before switching channels. "Awwww, that's so sweet. Sending three guys to dance with me? You shouldn't have!"

However, on the inside, you realize you're in trouble. It looks like you've become a big enough thorn in OB's side that they're actually sending out aces to specifically target you!

"Heh, be warned, I can dance a pretty mean tango!" Babylon laughs. "Ain't that right Tombstone?"

No answer.

"Aw, such a party pooper."

At this point, you believe you've managed to identify the planes the enemy aces were flying. Babylon was still in his Terminator, while Lancer was flying a Rafale and this Tombstone fellow was in an F-22. These were all rather formidable planes.

Your only hope was to whittle them down or dodge them long enough that help can arrive.

Hmm...there's several jets that might fit that bill
The F-20, a proposed upgraded variant of the F-5 meant for export markets, but killed in favor of the F-16
The YF-23, the jet that ultimately lost the ATF competition to the YF-22
Or the X-32, the smiliest plane around. Didn't help her win JSF, where she lost to the prototype X-35

The F-22, our 5th gen air superiority fighter, was not produced to the extent that was expected. Only 187 were built. I believe that was a massive cock up. The F-22 is leagues beyond any other aircraft currently in service. They were not produced in sufficient numbers to ensure US air dominance for the next 30 years.

Yeah. Congress failed to see the need when the F-35 was just around the corner. However, Congress fails to realize that excessive program costs are counteracted by actually producing more of the aircraft in order to spread the cost out.

Listen, the F-35 is actually pretty good. Better than the F-22 for bombing things. It is filling another role entirely. It is the Low end of the High-Low Spectrum. The F-22 fills the High. You need both working in conjunction to maximize the effectiveness, cost included, of your air force.

>>
>>39124195
No, no it is not a quality of its own when they had a habit of falling out of the sky on take-off and landing if you lowered or raised the gear at the wrong time and managed to snap the wings in half.

I shit you not, they are utter death traps, there are good reasons why they forced their own inventory onto PACT states just so they wouldn't have to fly them.
>>
>>39124220
>and yet the F-35 costs more than the raptor
That is a lie.
The F-35A is expected to cost $85 million. It looks like it will reach that low once full production runs around.

The F-22 costs $150 million.
>>
>>39124250
>>39124220
I suppose I should add that it is ~$100 mil currently.
>>
>>39124250

that was before the f-35 had balkanized production all across europe and america because muh politics.

They COULD have made it cheap.
>>
>>39124250
>thinking projected individual unit cost somehow negates the trillions it cost to develop
Anon, no matter which way you look at it, the F-35's development alone already outspent the Raptors R&D AND production run.

You CANNOT use the 'hurr durr each individual plane will EVENTUALLY be cheap guise" argument.
>>
>>39124277
But I can, and it works. The vast majority of the costs of 5th generation aircraft come from their program, not the planes themselves. The F-35 project includes a lot of very advanced technology, much of which is expected to be implemented in other planes. For example, the NGB is expected to use modified F135s.

At the time, The Phantom II was the best combination of both. Later, the F-15 largely took that high perch of quality and quantity. The bar was set so high for that programme as to be unattainable because of the perceived superiority of the MiG-25. It so badly outclassed most Soviet equipment that they had to make a similar scramble to produce the Su-27.

>>39124244
If I remember right, the only advice they could offer MiG-23 pilots when facing the next generation of Western fighters was to close quickly. This would make them lose some of their advantages! But I wasn't aware of such failures. Good to know.

Combat flying for a MiG-23 pilot generally was distilled down into "turn off your radar and your weapons, fly low with your wings swept back, hope to god that you can get behind them, somehow position yourself within 3000 meters, then turn your avionics back on, rotate your wings forward, and if you haven't crashed yet, hope your missiles can attain lock and keep track which they surely can't".

We joke about how bad the F-104 was, the MiG-23 showed LM how to make a right and proper terrible aircraft.

None of the three aces chasing even realizes what's wrong until it's too late. You nose your Eagle up, it's wide body acting as a giant air brake as you rapidly bleed off speed. Your entire craft shudders and whines as it goes through the high performance maneuver, but manages to hold together.

You watch as your three pursuers overshoot and zoom past your plane, leaving them open to attack. However, you could try to commit to taking one out or spread your attacks out.

The MiG-29 could outperform the F-15 in a dogfight, notably because of its off boresight targeting abilities. There was a cueing system on the helmet.

It took a little while to bring it to full potential though. Its hydraulic flight control system held it back a bit, FBW was clearly the way to go. And the RD-33 turbofans were kinda turkeys too; good thrust, but the time between overhauls was abysmal. The 29M fixed many of these problems and really brought it into the modern era. Range was always going to be shorter on internal fuel though. The Su-27 has the same problem.

You fire off some missiles, and you see it streak in. Tombstone pops flares and chaff, and all but one missile is thrown off track. The one missile continues on and explodes on proximity fuse, showering the enemy F-22 in shrapnel, and you can see black smoke belching from its left engine.

You take another quick look on your radar screen. Babylon and Lancer had already completed their turns and were closing in. If you stayed on Tombstone's tail, you could probably get into gun range on him, but at the risk of the other two aces catching up to you.

Called shot to the F-22's radar assembly - then pull in front of him and play 'use the enemy plane to block line of sight to the allies behind him'.

Make another offensive move when they break to maneuver.

You decide to play it safe and break off. Tombstone's bird is damaged anyways, so he'll be at a disadvantage. You break off early enough that Babylon and Lancer can't get an angle on you, buying you a few more precious seconds. You can see that the rest of the enemy planes have thinned somewhat, but your wingmates were still bogged down by the swarm.

You decide to focus on the remaining aces. From the looks of it, Tombstone was withdrawing from the battle, leaving only Babylon and Lancer to deal with. However, that was easier said than done. You put your Eagle into a turn to match your opponents. You can tell that you'll be on an intercept course on them.

You decide to engage Babylon and Lancer next. You angle your Eagle so that it has a firing solution on the two enemy aces. Your missile lock warning begins so shriek again, meaning your opponents had a similar idea.

You launch your next volley of missiles just as your opponents. Fortunately, none of them seemed to be able to hit you as you shoot past them.

"My turn." You scowl.

You fire off a volley of missiles: two regular missiles and a QAAM. While the QAAM misses, your two standard missile each score a hit on the two aces. You see one of the Terminator's tail fins get knocked off from a direct missile hit while the Rafale's wing was punched up like swiss cheese.

Unfortunately, before you can capitalize on the momentum swinging your way, Bablyon and Lancer immediately wheel around and break off. You check your radar screen again to see the Butterflies coming in and coming in fast. No doubt they wanted to get caught in on the action. As the aces withdraw, so do the other planes, though you notice there were a lot fewer of them than before.

"This isn't over between us, Valkyrie." You hear Lancer grunt. "We'll be back to settle the score."

"Yeah, well, you'll know where to find me." You coo. "Feel free to come at me any time."

"Oh, we will." Bablyon chuckles. "Count on it."

And with that, the OB planes break off and disappear just as fast they appeared.

<<MISSION ACCOMPLISHED>>

KILLS

F-22 Raptor ACE: 0.5 x 4000 = 2000
Rafale ACE: 0.5 x 3000 = 1500
Terminator ACE: 0.5 x 3000 = 1500

Total: 5000
Treasury: 28,000

"Dang, Valk!" Lara laughs. "You're picking up admirers left and right!"

"Three of those 'admirers' tried to kill me." You sigh.

"Just a hazard of the job, I guess!" Lara chuckles.

You... you're not so sure. You can't help but feel that you've got a big target painted on your back now....
