You wait a little while, just enjoying the quiet, before gently shaking Laura awake. She tenses slightly as the waking world pours over her – it’s what she does when she wakes up from a nightmare. There is a short, frantic moment, no longer than a blink, where she expects her reality and her dreams to intersect, for one to be a continuation of the other. Then she unwinds. Yawning quietly, she lifts her arms over her head, stretching the momentary tension out of them.

“You okay?”

She stares at you in silence for a moment, slightly baffled, before nodding. Holding the stare a second longer, she cocks her head to one side.

“You’ve made a decision.” She states.

“Yep.”

You phone Peter on your way back. It’s a while before he picks up, and when he does, the first thing you hear is a tremendous shriek, like metal crumpling inward. His breath pounds against your ear, almost tangible, and it’s a good three or four seconds before he forces out a harried “Hey!”

“…Hi?” You flinch slightly as something crashes to the ground on the other end of the line. What is he even doing? “…Everything alright over there, Peter?”

“Yeah, I”– He grunts in exertion and you think you can hear him running. Something nearby shatters. “It’s nothing, just, uh… kind of a… oh jeez!” There is a series of heavy thuds and some indecipherable shouting off in the distance. “…chemistry thing… gone a bit wrong…. kind of a bad”–

The line drops.

You can’t help but wonder what kind of insane chemistry project Peter’s class is doing.

When you get into the station, you ask Noriko if she can go tell the X-kids that you want to meet. She and Kevin both head off. You send a text to Julian yourself – hopefully he decides to grace you with his presence.

Will boxing lessons will give JJ more control on how hard he hits? I want to get him to a point where he can punch someone just hard enough that they wont get back up but not hard enough that they die.

“We will continue where we left off.” States Laura, taking a familiar stance opposite to you, legs apart and one fist held just below her breasts, the other hovering near her thigh. Almost instinctively, you find yourself moving your feet to take the same pose. She glances down at your feet, before nodding slightly. “Controlling your weight will be the focus of this session. Your abilities make you fast and mobile. You must learn to make the most of every movement.”

And so, that’s what you do.

Laura takes you through a series of increasingly-complex forms. You notice that most of them involve a great deal of kicking – you’re constantly having to think about how to put your foot down, or bring it up, amidst the various obstructions provided by the more spacious piles of rubble that lie strewn about the place. You keep it up for what must be hours, building up a heavy gauze of sweat, your breath gradually deepening in your lungs. You can’t help but notice that, despite her controlled breathing and focused eyes, Laura is sweating too, probably more than you are.

JJ uses enhanced contortion to aid in dodging all the time, it's just subtle enough that he doesn't really notice it. The only instance off the top of my head where he really exploited it was that time in the vents after the fake nurse.

After a short while, you shift maneuvers, and you spend about half an hour following Laura’s example as she rattles off a procession of loose, fluid kicks and jabs. For a while, you just concentrate on her movements while she bobs and weaves upon the balls of her feet. You feel it sinking though, the constant motions becoming a simple routine, and soon you’re following her without particularly thinking about it.

Eventually, Laura signals for you to stop, holding up her hand. She breathes heavily, running a delicate hand back through her hair.

Hey guys, maybe we should invest in some proper grappling and holds. Judo is great for throwing people around but knowing some basic restraining holds would be nice for if we don't want to cripple people with our strength accidentally (even without super strength it's pretty easily to really hurt someone if you try to hold them the wrong way)

Plus it would go a long way for grappling super strength foes, a good hold takes away pretty much all the leverage and motion needed to actually use your limbs.
