>Flare Cuvic, mechanic/pilot for the Iscariot Vigilante Company and current prisoner of the Holy Skiev Empire, has been sentenced to involuntary participation in the Gladiatorial Games on 'The Battlefield'. A jarring set of introductions led the fiery red-head and a plucky team of misfits into their first victory, which was soon followed by the procurement of their own base as a reward.

>It is here that we rejoin Flare Cuvic, in the throes of battle. She must prove her mettle once more on the front lines.

You can taste blood on you. In the past ten minutes, what should have just been a milk run on some ignorant gravvers has become a hell run through some ditch in the ground. In front of you, your squad leader's wanzer is gunning down tanks and ground pounders left and right. The sniper's long gone - he bought it after walking right into a trap. Same for the two riflemen you had on you - fuck, they didn't even last a second in the ambush. Now it's just you and the leader, stuck in a miles-long trench while trying not to get killed by all these damned mudfuckers.

"Cuvic! Get your ass in gear! I'm not losing another one!" The CO screams. You can hear it in his voice...he's lost all hope. But you can't let him know that. Instead of saying any of your concerns, you respond with a crisp 'YES, SIR!'.

Your wanzers don't look too good. His Jinyo 220 doesn't have an arm, and the treads on his mobility unit are wearing thin. There are more bullet holes than you care to count in his central chassis. Fuck, that's gonna be a bitch to repair. Then again, your Sonshi Speed Model doesn't even have arms. You can feel the dirty gravver wind trying to choke you from the open tears where your poor baby's arms used to be.

"CUVIC! WE'RE AT A BRANCH! LEFT OR RIGHT!?"

"Uh...uuuuuh...r-right!" You stammer. In truth, both of the choices that you had were shit, but right seemed the better of the two. Fewer tanks, as far as you could tell.

Your CO's back reactor flares up. Without a word, he starts heading to the right. "Cuvic, how in the hell did we mess up such a milk run!? Who sold us out!?" He screamed. "First the sniper, then the two gunners - hell, I'm expecting you to go, pretty soon! And all for...for what!?" Oh, thanks, commander. You sure needed THAT pep talk. He takes a few steps to the right to avoid a pothole; you just leap over it.

The trench is starting to get narrow. It wasn't usually like this - you could see that the mudfuckers had just tossed whatever they could to try and impede your process. At least your armless baby was useful for something. Less arms - less width.

Behind you, approaching at an alarming rate, was the very thing that you ran from. It wasn't the tanks and the ground pounders above the trench that scared you - you and the CO could handle all of them blind. It was -

"IT'S A DEAD END, CUVIC!"

>WHAT!?

Wait. There's something off about this mission. You can't quite place your finger on it, but it's far too hectic for you to figure out right now. You're sure that you could think about it, if you tried harder, but now's really not the time for that.

"CO, we've got to climb out of the trench! It's coming for us!" You yelp. Did your voice always sound that young? In any case, the commander's wanzer turns to the left side of your narrow trench. "Climb your ass out, Cuvic! We're getting ourselves home!" He screams back. Both of you plant your feet onto the sheer wall and start climbing.

You don't know how you do it without arms. The CO's having a bit of trouble, as it is. He refuses to drop his gun, firing back at the enemy fruitlessly while trying to climb. You, on the other hand, just focus on getting from one foot-hold to the next. Those ultra-tension cables from R&D are working wonders for you, right now - the wanzer's able to just hold itself up without any trouble.

You flip out of the trough and onto the ground above, narrowly avoiding cannonfire from the mouth of a tank while ducking into the closest cover. The CO's hand peeks out -

"DAMN!" He howls. A huge projectile rips through the air, obliterating his hand at near-light speeds. You turn your attention to the direction that the salvo came from...and gasp.

It had arrived. Towering at almost a hundred meters, plated to the nines with more lunarium in one shoulder-plate than you do on your whole body, stood the Dreadnought. You could even see tiny birds fluttering around near the head of the damn thing before it held one gigantic arm toward you. More than a thousand tons of gun were what stood in your way. Hell, even its own soldiers were afraid of that thing - the metal monster had scared away most of its own units.

"...Cuvic - no, Flare." The commander's voice sounded faint. "You're going to have to get out of here on your own. I...I don't think I'm going to be making it back to the Iscar. Do you have the package?"

"I - yes, sir, I do."

"Good. Keep that thing safe. I don't care where you put it or how you hide it - just KEEP THAT THING SAFE. I'll hold the Dreadnought off long enough to keep you alive. This is an ORDER!"

The Dreadnought's arm cannons were charging up. Its whole body seemed to crackle with electricity, anchoring itself while the back panels of the wanzer spewed out steam.

You can't follow such an order. Letting a man die just to get some piece of shit into - wait. You don't quite remember how you lost your wanzer's arms.

The next thing you know, your custom-made arms are holding a white sphere. The package was resting comfortably inside, untouched by the dust storms of the outside world. Oh. It's one of those things. "Commander..." You say, placing the ball down. "Do you remember what you said about taking risks?" The Dreadnought has a charge time of thirty seconds. Ten have passed. You have enough time for this.

"Is NOW really the time for this!? I - yes, I remember! I told you that if you're willing to bank on a risk, everything you do will turn to gold!"

"...I think I can take a risk right now." You force your wanzer to jump back into the trench. This isn't how it happened. You're sure that this isn't how it happened. The package was long gone, at this point.

"CUVIC! GET OUT OF THE WAY!" The commander's voice sounds like one of those ancient artifacts from the Origin World. It's getting distorted, warbling in and out of your consciousness. Your vision is beginning to blur from the light that's coming from the Dreadnought. "No, Commander. You get out. I'll be fine."

This isn't how it happened. The commander didn't scream at you to move. His wanzer could have easily shoved you out of the way, but he wasn't able to touch you, now. The Dreadnought was fully charged, and aimed its main cannon right at your face. "CUVIC! FLARE, MOVE, DAMN YOU!"

"I've never told anyone my first name, Commander."

You jolt awake with a start, lurching up from your bunk. Everything on your person is drenched in a cold sweat, from your new tank-top to your baggy cargo jeans. It's a terrible feeling, but not nearly as terrible as the music that was playing from Myl's little tablet. That dream again... this time, the CO was alone. And the package... You weren't the one who was holding onto it. It was -

"Hey. Are you alright, ma'am? You haven't even slept for ten minutes!" Roy chips in. "You were tossing and turning in your sleep, mumbling about some package and some hell-trench...we all got worried about you." The lopine was standing at the foot of your bunk, looking at you with concerned eyes. Behind him, the rest of the squad was trying very hard to pretend that they weren't paying attention. Myl kept her attention on the holoboard, while Nahn and Deks turned back to the television. Even the blueberry looked like she was having a hard time with things.

"Just trying to remember how I got into this shithole, rabbit." You grunt, swinging your legs out and getting up from the bed. If the lopine was right, you still had ten minutes before you said you would train the units. More than enough time to get a drink. You head over to the rumbling, junky fridge that was in the common room, cracking it open to check inside.

"Junk. Junk. Pisswater. Junk. Myl, how in the fuck do you expect us to do anything with protein fluids, shitty beers, and some green shit?" You growl, withdrawing the least shitty of the ales from the middle shelf. The only discernible thing about it was that it was red...and that it sounded like a robot unfolding itself when you tried to open it.

Myl headed up toward you, holding her tablet in hand like some sort of secretary. "Sorry, cap'n - that's what our glorious overlords gave us t'have. That said, ah got some info for ya. First an' foremost, yer little stunts got ya some noto-...noto-...it gotcha famous, Sparky. I got some sites here what have people clamorin' for ya. Check 'em out on the holoboard when ya got time."

"Next up : trainin'. Now, don't you go on thinkin' that I didn't see yer patch job out there on the field. That was some mighty fine work! Hell, even yours truly couldn'ta pulled that shit off! Now, I'm thinkin', instead'a you trainin' these boys and girls, we leave the prottie ta do it. You an' I go an' gitcher team some new wanzers with the prize money we got!" She presented the holotablet to you, showing a map of the Underquarter. "See, that there's the Junkyard. Ah got me a contact in there what'll hook us up real nice with some parts, if'n ya want. Then there's the weapons dealer, and I can even gitcha talkin' to some o' the info-handlin' folks, if'n ya wanna hear more about Thyra. Whaddayasay?"

That...actually didn't sound too bad of an idea. It's a little negligent of you, especially after that whole speech you gave them about teamwork and working together and shit, but it's not as if you're leaving them to dick around. It's also a good way of testing the blueberry, since the pro'tau are some of the most capable soldiers out there.

Well, then again, the pro'tau don't speak. You actually aren't all too sure about how you understand her, to be honest - maybe she's just letting you? Either way, it's not the safest bet. Besides, if they can't even work a junker like this, how will they work actual wanzers?

"...just in case I say no, I take it you're just gonna go off and dick around in town while we train?"
"Oooooh, you betcha. Y'all still need fancy-ass parts, and a mechanic cain't always be tunin' up her team's mechs, now, can she? Besides, y'all said ya hated th' beers ah picked out for ya, so I might as well get some real liquor, right?"

"You betcha, ma'am. Too bad you don't wanna join me, though. I wanted t'show off the new set o' wheels I built'cha!" Myl gave a crisp salute before sauntering out of the common room.

Ugh. Look at them. Half the team doesn't even look like they've had any military experience, while the other half is screaming greenhorn. This is gonna take some effort. You head over to the holoboard, slamming a balled fist against it. "RED PACK, HUDDLE!" You scream. The team can respond, at least - they all jump up and head over to you, surrounding you in a half circle. "Hustle up! I know we just got out of the battlefield, but all of you assholes were pitiful, out there! We only got out of that shithole with our hides on our backs because we worked together! If any of you got caught alone, you'd be dead in the water!" Rough. Maybe a little too rough. Roy and Deks were quivering in their metaphorical boots.

You clear your throat, easing up your shoulders a bit and lowering the screaming juuuust a tad. "Now I told you all that we can get out of this, but the only way we can win this shit is if we train together as a team. I know that the team can function if we all focus, but I don't want a sloppy performance like last time. I'm gonna drill you until you get it right, and I won't let you fail yourselves." Better. At least no one's crying.

"Now here's what we have to work with.
Nahn, you're in the Power Wanzer with the heavy machine gun.
Roy, you're in the Speed Wanzer with the shotgun.
Deks, you're in the Defense Wanzer with the shields and the pile bunker.
Blueberry, you're still sitting in the Power Wanzer with the armor-piercing sniper rifle."

I see this as more of a "everyone wave hi at me with your wanzer's right hand." "No, Roy, I said RIGHT Hand!"

Exactly why we need to training their skills first. Like movement and accuracy. Its abit hard to work as a team when they're tripping over each other.

Alright, I'm back. I don't think anyone changed their vote, so we're gonna train as a team. Good reasons all around, though.

The notion of switching everyone around enters your head. You brush it off, for the moment - better to train them in the things they got in than to switch it up now. The next order of business would be on how the squad should be trained. Individually, you could always focus on their strengths. You could also give Deks a bit of training, too, since the bugger doesn't seem like he even knows how to do shit. On the other hand, the team looks like they already have basics, down. They can move, they can shoot. More than good enough for you.

That settles it. You'll train them as a team...well, maybe not Deks. You should probably think that through.

"Alright, team. Most of us have some experience with wanzers, so I won't baby you. Today, we'll focus on team movement and team exercises. We'll do some basic maneuvers, fire at some targets, and then we'll do two-on-two scrimmage. Everyone clear?" You wait for a response. When there was none, you clapped you nodded. "Alright. Suit up and get in your mechs, people - we got a long day ahead of us."

---

As everyone filed out of the room, the Formic taps your shoulder. "Erm...captain. I am a diplomat. I am not quite as trained as you all are in terms of...well, in terms of even using a wanzer. I'm sure you remember our initial bout. Is there anything else I could do, perhaps?"

Gods damn it. Well, you were expecting this, at least. You could probably find something on the holoboard for Deks to watch, or you could take some time to give a crash course in wanzer piloting. There's also just having him sink or swim, or you could just have him sit out...

The best way to handle a bugger is to handle his shit in person. It's better if you train him, anyway - you know damn well he won't fuck up, under some IVC tutelage. "Oh, you're not about to sit this one out, bugger. I'm gonna teach you how to pilot a wanzer personally." You reply, pointing out to his gigantic Defense Mech. "See that? You're gonna learn how to love that shit. You're gonna learn how to breathe in the stale, grease-rancid air in that cockpit like it's your hive queen's protein." "Oh, my!" "You're gonna learn to pilot that thing, or you're gonna be a sitting duck on the battlefield. You hear me?"

"I...yes, ma'am."

"Good." You and Deks step out of the common room, heading toward his wanzer. The others give you a strange look as you pass them by, but you calmly respond with a sharp glare. "I'm gonna be giving this guy a crash course. Everyone, go ahead and set up." You bark out to the group, dispelling their concerns.

As you reach the cockpit, Deks starts to fidget in place...

You climb up the ladder, beckoning Deks to follow you. Opening his cockpit, you shove the bugger inside before he can really adjust himself. "Alright, so." Oh, thank the Gods, this wanzer looks like it was made by someone sane. Everything is in its right place, with no weird configuration like Myl had on your wanzer. Maybe this was built by another engineer? Or maybe this is just suited for Formics?

"I won't spend too much time on this shit, since you seem like you're smarter than Roy is. Here's the short version of what you'll need to know. First off..." As you start rattling on about the basics of wanzer movement, you can see that the bugger's really catching on. It almost reminds you of -

-------------

"CUVIC!" Your CO screams, and you snap to a salute. It's a little difficult, what with the wanzer being so cramped and all, but he says that everyone has to start in the scrapmech. "You'd better have been paying attention, maggot! There are no slackers in the Bullseye Squad! Now! Repeat to me the basic components of wanzer movement!"

"Sir! Wanzer movement and combat consists of three basic elements - movement, positioning, and aim! Movement consists of either pedals, engine levers, or, in the case of high-quality mechs, a VR scanning area. Pilots press on the right pedal to begin wanzer movement, and the left pedal to stop! In terms of engine levers, each increment on the lever translates to faster or slower forward or backward movement, sir! Last but not least, the VR scanning platform translates pilot movement to wanzer movement on a one-to-one scale! The same elements apply for the arm movement, but the pedals and levers are replaced by twin control sticks and... um..."

"Come on, Princess, I can train a shitstain better than you! Keep going!"

"SIR! Arm units can also be controlled by mechanical glove analogues which are inserted partway into the arms, to simulate the movement on a one-to-one scale!"

1/?
>>
>>39143045
"Good, Cuvic! Now explain aiming and wanzer angles!"

"Yessir! Nearly all wanzers have a turning radius of forty-five degrees to either the left or the right! The arms can turn a total of one-hundred-and-thirty-five degrees by three hundred and sixty degrees, sir, giving a total of forty-eight thousand, six hundred degrees! Most cockpits also serve as the viewing window, so a pilot must consider the balance between letting the enemy have a clear shot at them and having a clear shot at the enemy, sir! Arm movements are as fast or as slow as the machine allows, so a soldier must take this into account, sir!" You pant a little bit as the words leave your body. Fuck, the CO's really running his recruits raw today!

He gives you a once over...and then smiles. "Nice work, Cuvic. Close up the hatch - you're ready to move."

-----

You're snapped out of your reverie by the clicking of Deks' mouth. "I see. So these paddles are for movement, these switches are for...yes. I understand now, commander. I can operate this machine." He chitters, saluting to you. Wow. That was alarmingly fast. No wonder buggers are the preferred diplomats of the Union.

"Right. Good. I'll go ahead and go out to meet the troops. You go on and join us, recruit."

Feeling a little proud of yourself for such a good job at teaching, you walk back to Fyanna with a spring to your step. Even the cramped environment of the stout wanzer can't get you down, as you and Deks pilot out of the warehouse.

The area outside of the warehouse was littered with junk. Here and there were large shipping containers (which all seemed to be empty), large chunks of torn scrap, and other things of that nature. Roy, Nahn, and the un-named pro'tau were lined up in their wanzers. Deks joins the trio, and all four of your squad mates give you a salute.

Except for Roy, who salutes with the wrong hand. Goddamn it, Roy.

...well, you're all here. Now how do you want to train them...

"First up - unit movement. Here's how you move as a unit." While you speak, you start to set up barriers in front of the warehouse's lot; some cover here, an obstacle there, and other small things that could either benefit or doom a moving platoon.

The basics of your teachings are based on what your commander taught you - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maneuver_warfare . It's all nice, neat, and to the point, and the team seems eager to try out some of the things you have in store.

An hour into your training session, the disappointment was visibly steaming out of your ears. For your part, your wanzer wasn't exactly moving the way you wanted it to. It might have been the damage done a few hours ago - even if Myl was good, she wasn't a miracle worker. In any case, you couldn't quite lead the team as well as you wanted. Following along to your lead, Roy stumbled into the backs of other mechs more often than you'd like. He even bumped head-long into the blueberry, who didn't quite understand what was going on! Didn't she speak Uni-Comm!? What the fuck happened there!?

On the other hand, Nahn and Deks were displaying a real head for this sort of thing. You can see that Nahn's specialty really is in following orders to the letter, and Deks has a head for processing information. The both of them worked much better than the dumb rabbit who couldn't even walk right and the indigo interpreter who couldn't understand you. "Fuckin' hell, Roy, get your shit together... next up is..."

If they did bad in moving, maybe they'd do better in shooting. You rearrange all the junk to where it's all in a straight line, staggered for distance according to the ranges of all of your weapons. Deks is at the closest range, melee, with Roy and Nahn firing at the second closest target. You have the second farthest target to aim at, and the 'tau with her pretty little sniper has a long-range target to aim for.

In all of this moving and repositioning, your words decide that now would be a good time to leave you. "Alright, so... Nahn, you've got a heavy gun. It's all about firing for suppressive fire. Roy, you have a shotgun. You're all for close range and shit, so just aim for the most of them. Don't get in Nahn's way, though. Deks, you have a pile-bunker. Just hit the thing. Berry, you, uh, just shoot. Everyone do this." Drawing your revolver out, you maneuver your control sticks so that you twirl it by the trigger a few times. You stop it right as the grip hits your palm and make six near-perfect shots close to the top of your target 'dummy'.

"So, yeah. Just do that."

Another hour passes. To your pleasant surprise, Roy is actually not fucking this up, even though you did a terribly stupid thing and paired him up with someone who is practicing the concept of suppressing fire. He ducks underneath her bullets, shooting at the center mass of the shipping container. It helps that Nahn aims her bullets toward the enemy's arms. You can tell that she's aiming as if the enemy had a gun, and was trying to ensure that the enemy couldn't aim through her hail of bullets.

Your attention turns to the aliens, and you see the drastic difference between a war-like civilization and a diplomatic one. Berry's a brilliant shot, popping off her training dummy's dome each and every time. She even starts taking pot shots at the other dummies, placing her bullets right no top of the bullet holes that you made in yours.

>>39144410
And then there was Deks. The bugger could move fine, sure, but you just couldn't watch his flailing and blundering about. His wanzer had the appearance of a big, fat child swinging their arms from side to side. "I - urgh! I just can't do it, captain! I either see a friendly unit, or the controls jam on me!"

"That's fine, Deks. I can't say I'm not disappointed, but it's not like your wanzer's built for fighting, anyway. Good work, people. Good practicing. Next up is..."

It's been a couple of hours, and the moon is starting to rise. You can tell that the team's starting to get tuckered out from all this training. Even the pro'tau, who's the best trained of the lot, has to open up her cockpit and let out some of the heat. They could handle one more bit of training, maybe two, before they give up the ghost.

"Alright, team, let's dismount. Huddle up your wanzers around me, and we'll take a twenty-minute break. Everyone dismount once they're huddled up - I got some shit to say." You say into your comm, trying to hide your own fatigue. Even if they trained you for endurance in the force, it's not as if you can just keep on going.

The squad groups up near the entrance of the warehouse. Everyone begins to dismount just as the sound of a running motor begins to approach. "Howdy, y'all! Workin' hard?" Myl cries, sticking her head out from the driver's seat window. "Ah brought ya some cold beers an' a few snacks, and they'll be shippin' in some wanzer parts t'morrow! Y'all also have a match lined up fer th' day after!"

Thank the Gods.

Myl had arrived in a beaten-up jeep. It actually reminded you of the transport vehicle that had brought you into the games to begin with, with how it looked - it was just a truck with a very long back carriage thing, and a tarp hanging over the carriage. She dismounted, holding a nice six-pack of some beer they made on this dirt-ball.

----

Everyone was in front of you, sitting down on taking a knee. "I won't lie to you. Tonight could have gone better. We're all tired from the match, our mechs aren't looking all too hot, and it's not helping that it's night-time. We don't really have much energy left. Then there's the whole thing with tripping up on walking, which wasn't a pleasant sight. Still, you all pulled through. I gotta say, we aren't looking all too bad." The alcohol in your system is loosening your tongue and your shoulders. Everyone around you seems to be a little more relaxed, as well. Hell, now would probably be a good time to end training...

>End training and pack up the wanzers?

It's been a long day. You can't say you've worked out all of your PTSD-induced stress through the training, but you've made a little bit of something out of your squad. You can tell that they've also gotten something out of this, as well - more than training, they've all started to bond with one another, to have a shared experience that they can all talk about and draw strength from. Even Myl, who wasn't really part of the training, is sharing in the camaraderie that is growing between the group.

Squad Loyalty UP! Current Squad Loyalty - 3 out of 10.

The wanzers are put away as neatly as you can manage them, and almost no worse for wear. Except for Roy's and the blueberry's, of course. The team then starts bringing in most of the groceries that Myl brought back, hauling in bag after bag of things. "Ah got y'all a treat - actual fresh veggies! Couldn't quite manage the meat, since we got some vegetarian species in th' house an' all, but protein paste tastes better with a bit o' herbs and spices, right?" She quips.

All in all, you spent four hours training the team and bringing the groceries in. The current time is around 2200 hours - you could probably squeeze a few last minute activities in before lights-out, tonight. "Team, I'm gonna call in lights-out at 2300 hours. We're all gonna wake up at 0600 Origin time to get some more training in. That should leave you guys with about seven good hours of sleep - a hell of a lot more than I ever got, in my training." You say to your team. Their response is a strong 'yessir'! Good.

"Hey, everyone! I'm gonna make some stir-fry!" He calls out. Last, but not least, Myl was at the middle table, holotablet in hand. She also waves you down, no doubt to talk about the next match.

It's probably for the best if you dealt with the blueberry now, frankly. As Roy begins to hum a tune under his breath, you point a finger toward Myl and mouth out 'later' before sitting in front of the 'tau. "Alright, so - "

MY NAME IS SOFIA.

Ugh. She's so Gods-damned loud. Even though you know you didn't really hear anything, your ears are throbbing from the sheer wind pressure. When you look around, however, you notice that no one else is affected.

DO NOT BE ALARMED. I AM ONLY DIRECTING MY THOUGHTS TO YOU. YOU ARE A CURIOSITY. MOST SPECIES ARE UNABLE TO HEAR THE THOUGHTS OF THE PRO'TAU, THOUGH WE CAN HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS PERFECTLY. YOU, HOWEVER, ARE ABLE TO HEAR. YOU HAVE THE MENTAL FORTITUDE TO UNDERSTAND. THIS INTRIGUES ME.

She opened her black irises and stared into your eyes...no, she wasn't staring at you. She was staring through you. She looked like she was...searching for something, maybe. Or trying to get something out of you. Whatever she was doing, it was creeping you the hell out. "...right. So, uh, what is it that you wan - "

WHY ARE YOU HERE? WHAT HAS BROUGHT YOU TO THE LAND OF TRIALS?

Sofia extends her hand out toward you, pointing to your hand. She kept her palm facing upward to the sky. "Do you...want me to hold your hand?" You ask. Instead of assaulting your mind, she simply nods.

>Take her hand?
>Sure, why not? She's completely trustworthy.
>Hell no. You trust her as far as you can throw her.

>Also, do you wish to tell her why you're here?
>Ah, sure. Not like the mission was a big secret.
>Be evasive. Tell her just enough to sate her curiosity.
>HELL NO. That mission's top secret.

The sounds of a fiery eruption, along with the high-pitched panic-squeals of a certain lopine, sound like they're miles away. You can't seem to shake Sofia's gaze, boring deep into the recesses of your mind. Lifting your hand up from your lap, you place it into her palm.

Listen. Hear me, and listen. I am Sofia Coreina, of the planet of Magra. I am of the warrior caste, and I have my own reasons as to why I am on the Planet of Trials.

Her voice is much softer, now. All around you, the various errant sounds are dulled. You just feel so...so trusting of Sofia. You almost want to - no. Stop. The CO trusted you.

"I'm here because of a mission. I'm from the S.S. Iscar, born and raised. We were sent to the planet Tyhra to help with a secret project, where we succeeded, but not without cost. Our success didn't stop the Holy Skiev Empire from rising." Your voice is so peaceful. You don't remember your voice sounding so sweet before.

I see. I shall not pry, but now you and I understand each other. I have asked you one question, and you are now permitted to ask me one question.

>What do you want to ask Sofia?

If she can hear your thoughts...maybe you can just think it to her? You think about asking why she's here, and if you can trust her with your life. Her eyes close for a moment, and then...

The answer to your first question...is difficult. Some would say that I have been exiled. Others shall say that I am having my Rite of Passage, in the land of Trials. Still others would say that I am searching for 'it'.

As to your second question, I shall ask you one in return.

Can I trust you with mine?

And just like that, you find yourself standing up, walking away from the couch. You don't even realize that you're doing it until your foot bumps into something, breaking you out of your trance-like state. All at once, your senses barrage you with Roy's nervous chuckling and blowing into a pot; the sight of Myl's slender fingers beckoning you with a come-hither gesture, and the slight rumble of the ground from Nahn stomping her boot in anger. "I told you it wouldn't work, sir! That thing's not breaking!" "I apologize, Nahn, but I know that I can crack the code. If you could but give me one moment more..."

FIFTEEN MINUTES HAVE PASSED. FORTY-FIVE MINUTES REMAIN.

Roy's gonna be Roy. There's no sense in saving his hide. And the pair over at the holoboard are doing whatever they're doing, so they'll be fine. In fact, it looks like the bugger finally did what he was aiming to do. "Ah, there, see? Now we have access to Intergalactic News, Nahn. All it took was a bit of gumption and a fair amount of knowledge into planet-wide firewalls. It's something all diplomats know."

Ignoring all this, you wave down Myl and take a seat beside her. "Hey, Myl. You said you had some info on the next fight?" You ask. Myl nods, sliding the holotablet over toward you.

"As you can see, Sparky, th' Empire's set'cha up for a doubles match, two days from now. It'll be in one a' those small arenas underground, so there ain't much room t'move around. They said that you, specifically, gotta be in the match. Yer partner can be whoever ya want, though. We can talk about that..." She swiped two fingers to the left a few times, spreading them wide on the tablet's surface to enlarge a list. "...or we can talk about some o' the parts we got for ya. I got D - Rank upgrades fer everyone, so I can upgrade all yer wanzers whenever ya want. It'll take a whole day t'do it, even with the whole squad pitchin' in, so that's somethin' ta think about. Why we gotta talk about that is because ah need yer input on what to put where. Oh, and I do just wanna bring up a tiny little thing about the squad. Just thought y'all might be interested."

You look at all the information given to you, taking the tablet out of Myl's hands. "Alright. In that case..."

>Let's talk about the match, first. What do you have on that?

Another tie.

How's about this? Myl's whole bit is gonna use both of these, since I planned to take up to two, but this roll is gonna decide which is first.

1 is Wanzer Parts, 2 is Match.
>>
>>39146956
"Set me up with the match, first. I want to know what the details of it are." Business first, then to the other thing.

"You got it, cap. Y'see, usually, they just pitcher team against some other low-rankin' newbies what did some bad crimes, but th' Prallat's got a shinin' ta this team. He wants t'see us squirm, and he's thinkin' o' sendin' you and a buddy to yer deaths early. He ain't breakin' no rules by sendin' us against top gladiators or nothing, but he's put us up against some famous newbie crushers - Lok and Tak. They're two business leaders from the Old Days, b'fore Thyra was united under the Skiev Empire. They ain't the best pilots, but they got some high-end shit.

"Th' arena's a tiny little thing - ya got just enough room t'run around the bitch. There's four pillars, all equid- equi - fuckin' hell, they're all lined up in a square 'round the middle. There's also a few of the bigger beasties o' this planet what'll tear mah poor baby Fyanna and another wanzer up, if'n yer not careful. So ya gotta face that."

"Th' rules are simple : Just take yerself and another person from the squad into th' dome. That said, I got me some prime intel, darlin' - if'n ya spare one o' the wanzers...well, let's just say we might get a bit o' help from some people, in the future."

Myl looks around to the group, then back to you. "So. Who're ya gonna take?"

>Who do you wish to take to the doubles battle?
>This is a very important decision. Choose wisely.
>>
>>39147234
>>Who do you wish to take to the doubles battle?
Nahn best all around. Sophia is a great shot but not a great pilot, Roy's piloting is a mess and his accuracy is only passable and the bug? He needs training in combat more.
>>
>>39147234
>>39147253
The bug might be the best choice, heavy suit gives cover where there is little and I'm guessing most of the beasties cant eat through the shields. Problems show up if those cheating assholes on the other side have some bigass guns for beating shields.
>>
>>39147234
Nahn. Our sniper wouldn't help in this situation while Bug's defense suit is good for this he has no battle experience since he did absolutely nothing last time.
>>
>>39147271
Nahn is a heavier suit too and she has a mg for combat and suppression. Additionally she is a solid shot and pilot.
>>
>>39147309
>>39147294
>>39147253
Your faith in Nahn runs deep. Let us hope you have made the right decision.

Writing!
>>
>>39147309
But a heavier suit without the shields.

The shields are what I want, anon, since in an arena setting, you either have speed or you have defense, and the arena is small so less manuevering for our OP speed and hanging around the pillars to hide won't work if they have explosives or indirect fire systems.

I may be overly insane, though.
>>
>>39147329
...what I meant to say was 'writing in three minutes'. I didn't mean to jump the gun.
>>
>>39147309
Nahn uses a power suit not a defense suit.
>>
>>39147358
Still heavier than a speed.

>>39147348
Thing is he can't sue them well. He misuses them he dies and obstructs our shots.
>>
>>39147358
In terms of defense -

The basic speed wanzer will crumple if another wanzer sneezes on it.

The power wanzer is a little tougher, but it won't take a hit as well as a defense wanzer will.

The defense suit will take a ton of hits.

Do you guys want more time to debate about it? I don't have shit to do, and I'm getting my second wind.
>>
>>39147380
The blocking is easy, he just holds them in front of himself, he would be a walking bunker, he has problems hitting things I'll give you that.
>>
>>39147392
Can we get grenades (Or anything that has a timer and explodes that we can throw)? It'd be very useful to circumvent traditional defensive measures.
>>
>>39147401
He still has no experience in a fight and we are facing newbie crushers. They will definitely be able to take advantage of his lack of experience and either confuse him or make him panic.
>>
>>39147422
That'll come up soon. I take it everyone's sticking with Nahn, then?

In that case, I'll be writing, now.
>>
>>39147401
Things is he stands still he's dead Wanzer combat needs maneuverability. if he had better than class D gear which seems standard or even subpar maybe. But we're facing people who will be better equipped and coordinated. Additionally he's a bad pilot with no combat experience, he will freeze and die on us. Nahn won't.
>>
>>39147445
You'd be surprised at how well someone does something when they are being told how to do it!

It's like carrying a piano up the stairs, you count out your steps in metronome and suddenly ascending becomes much easier. Coordination is a helluva drug!

And just because they are "newbie crushers" doesn't exactly mean they themselves are good at capitalizing, it could just come from the fact they have great shit and no one they face do.

WHO KNOWS!? I'm not salty, I just like debate.
>>
Watch the dice completely fuck Nahn over now.

I'll be sad.
>>
>>39147493
is we can't babysit him and fight. We'd have our hands tied. going into a fight with our hands tied is a great way to die.

>>39147517
probably. Though she should get some bonuses or even let us roll for her since she's on our team now.
>>
>>39147234
You made a mental note of who you had on hand. The obvious choice was the sniper, since she had the most experience. That was also the death trap, since the sniper only had long-range experience. "Sofia's out." Next was the bugger, since he's a huge wall of hurt. Then again, he just started learning how to move today. It wasn't like he could make miracles happen. It would be nice to have him as a wall, but just turtling up and waiting for the enemy to kill you was no way to go. "Deks is out." After that would be Nahn, who was easy to panic, but a better shot at mid-range than the sniper was. Her power wanzer wasn't as good as a defense wanzer would be, but it was tough enough to weather a storm. "Maybe Nahn?" Last but not least was Roy - "Roy's out by default."

The lopine's poor ears drooped.

"Alright. Guess I'm taking Nahn, now. I'll brief her on the mission tomorrow." You say, to which Myl nods. She presses a few buttons on her tablet. "Done, done, and done. Alright. Next up are the parts. We got a few things goin' on with the parts, but I'll sum it up like this. You remember that you got some C-Rank parts, right? Well, since you're the team captain and all, I got alla those pretty little fillies lined up and ready t'install to ya..."

"...or I woulda, if the Prallat didn't confiscate all our winnin's from the first fight."

What.

Myl lifts her cap up, brushing a hand through her messy blonde hair. "Yeeeeeah...y'see, th' Prallat done heard about some stuff, and, uh...well, ah didn't mean t' be a nuisance an' all, but let's just say that he an' I got a right colorful hist'ry, me an' him." Like I said to ya a few hours ago, th' Prallat's got it out fer Red Pack."

"Buuuuut..."

A few more swipes of her fingers on the tablet, and Myl was now showing you a smiling face. It was an android - a well dressed one, at that - standing in front of an impressive stock of guns. "Guten abend. We are the Supplier. This is but a physical shell, meant to more easily transfer our collective will between planets. We understand that you have certain troubles with the local tyranny. The collective has authorized this unit to conduct business with you, Captain Cuvic - " How the fuck did he know your name!? " - and will provide you with weapons and armaments at a discount. This collective also offers missions in relation to the planet Tyhra. Should you accept these missions, you shall be provided extra rewards. Do not worry - these missions will coincide with your current incarceration-based activity, known as the Games."

The android took a bow, and a small screen opened up on the tablet.

Everyone was gearing up to sleep. Hell, you were feeling tired, too - you wanted nothing more than to crash on your bunk and forget about everything. If you didn't tell Nahn about the doubles match two days from now, however, she might panic and do something everyone might regret. Better to handle that shit storm before it hits the shore.

"Nahn. I gotta talk to you." You say, taking a seat on the couch. She starts to get up and salute you, but you wave her down. "I'm too tired for that shit and so are you. Look, It's almost lights-out, but me and Myl were talking about the match coming up - "

"Ma'am! I'm prepped and ready for battle! I know we've got upgrades incoming for our wanzers, and I'll be more than happy to help install them, tomorrow!"

" - right, right. About that. The upcoming battle is a doubles match. I'm being forced in it because our Grand Prallat is a Grand Prick. I wanted to bring in the bugger, but I thought that you'd be the better choice. I signed you up for it." You wait for a reaction, but she seems to be holding back until you finish. "Alright. So..."

>Encourage? You're late and it's tired as shit, but you can put some words together.

Nahn looks...possibly afraid? You're not quite sure how to judge her reaction. The most you've known about her is that she's bad under pressure, and this is a life-or-death situation. There isn't much more that you could say to really scare her, other than telling the poor girl that she's gonna be sent in alone.

"Nahn. How old are you?"

"I'm - " Nahn's voice was a high-pitched squeak, but she bit it back. "- I'm eighteen, ma'am. Enlisted to the Union Forces at ten, ma'am."

"Oh. What do you know. I'm twenty...what, two? Twenty-three? I could be your older sister, almost. Look, I wouldn't put you up to this if I didn't know that you could handle it. You're a tough girl, Nahn, and you can follow orders to the letter. I know I can count on you when the going gets rough - remember what happened just four hours ago? We were literally strangers, but you put faith in me. You followed my orders. You even killed that Green Pack wanzer with Roy. That means something to me. When we get into battle two days from now, I'll be right there with you. I'll make sure that neither of us gets fucked up, okay? All I ask from you is that you try your best."

...

There was an uncomfortably long silence between you two. Most of it was filled with Nahn trying (and failing) to hold tears back. She gave a quivering salute and murmured, "P-permission to hug you, captain?"

Ah, fuck it. "Granted."

You are barraged by a muscular, slightly-smaller girl on all sides! She wraps her arms around your tired frame, holding you in a tight embrace. "Nuh-no-one's ever suh-suh-said that, cap'n! No one ever said - said that they counted on me, cap'n! I - Dass all I wanneda hear frommuh ol' capin, an' now - BAWWWWWWW!" Oh, Gods. She's breaking down. Poor Nahn was drawing the attention of Myl and Deks, and you could only clear your throat and start brushing her hair.

"Uh...there, there...fuck, if I knew you were gonna bawl your ass off, I would have waited until tomorrow morning or some shit. I take it you're willing to help me out, then, Nahn?"

"Yehzz, ma'am! We'll beat those jerks!"

The S-Links are to remain nebulous. This, I have decreed.

Flare, like any good commanding officer, can feel whenever she's formed a bond or has deepened a bond with her squadmates. She won't know how deep the bond is specifically, but she'll know when a certain milestone has been hit.

I'll make a pastebin for shit later. Honestly, I'm gonna take a bit of a break. The next quest will be on Wednesday or Thursday, probs.
>>
>>39148724
alright cool, just don't abandon it like others have done.
>>
>>39148740
Abandon the quest or the pastebin? I have no plans of abandoning the quest. It's literally too early for me to think of that.

It would be nice if another anon helped with pastebin shit, but I have all of our data tucked away in files, so I just need to transcribe it. Lord knows I got time.

I was actually thinking about giving you guys a pug in-game, but that would have little to no bearing in terms of sick mech fights. I'm all for the stuff in between, honestly, like what happened with Nahn and Sofia and Deks, but I don't feel like it would be very good for the quest if I just did that kind of stuff.

If I were to make yet another waifuthread, I'd add a dog. Ah, well.

He almost burned the place down while cooking.

Other quests have their own shit-tier rollers, ours (for now) is Roy. I still love the furball, clever little shit, he is.
>>
>>39148991
I did give him the 95. I gave him the 95 so hard. You don't even know.

Even then, he cocked it up with two bad rolls in a row. To his credit, he didn't burn anything down, and acted quickly to keep the fire under control.

I really wanted to have you guys make your own mech in the Junkyard and meet the Supplier on your own.

Myl's and foot shorter than Flare, standing at 5'2. She has a slender build and a waifish body, but I'd like to imagine that she has a bit of a southern gal look to her. Hair is chin-length and ruddy, kept in a hat most of the time.

Her fingers are calloused and her arms are well defined, due to engineering work. Her legs, on the other hand, look thin. She wears overalls and a shirt, along with a brown cylinder cap.
>>

I hope this is able to help you, if you decide to draw. If not, that's fine - I'm happy with what you've presented.
