You are Urist Twelfthbay, and you are a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry- in other words, a dwarf. You also happen to be the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, living in the (ostensibly) happy and cute world known as Gamindustri, the land where everyone who's anyone is a moe personification of /something/.

You'd be slightly more okay with this whole setup if Gamindustri's definition of "dwarf" wasn't "an adorable little girl" and left no room for the important things in life, like glorious beards and actual muscle growth. As it is, you're rarely a happy camper- but that's okay, because you're rarely a sober one, either.

... unfortunately, right now, you're in one of those rare sober moods, since you just came out of a fucked-up dream sequence that tried (and failed) to have you killed. What's even worse is that it tried to embarrass you /and very much succeeded/.

And if that wasn't enough, all this hootenanny cropped up right at the worst possible time: with you and your injured friends exposed to danger smack-dab in the middle of a cavern in no-dwarf's land. And said danger is all wrapped up in a grotesque forgotten beast that you helped to make; right now, it's a slightly less horrifying chicken, but that's not gonna last long.

And you STILL don't know what the fuck Keeper was trying to do, herding all those goddamn pipe monsters and carting around a chunk of Sharicite.

Okay. Fine. So you're huddled in the corner, kneeling next to an unconscious, violently-scythed Estelle, and a broken-down Rokko who subjected herself to some sort of uber-glitch that conveniently (and knowing your luck, temporarily) vaporized a sworn enemy.

The last thing you remember before going off into la-la land was princess-carrying the Blue Bomber about ten yards, since you weren't about to drag her along the rocky floor and ruin her shit any more than it's already been ruined. Carrying her would have been more heroic and/or noble if it didn't involve a whole lot of grunting and muscle strain and pain on your part. Robots are /heavy/.

Enough putzing around. You've got to build a miniature fortress around you and your friends before Momuz stops being a chicken and continues being a feathery flesh-melting arachnid hellbent on melting the flesh off your bones. You're not a dedicated architect or mason, but you ARE a dwarf, and there's more than enough spare rock lying around for walls and a ceiling and actual floors.

You spit on your hands and rub them together, smearing the layer of grime. Now you're about to find out if you have enough /time/.

>Walls roll!
>19+1
>Success bonus: Fast Construction!

Walls. Fine. Walls are easy enough to handle, you've just... gotta take a buncha rocks, mold them by hand into the rough shapes you want to use, and then stick them into the ground and let nature take its course, i.e. they immediately become rock walls about one story tall, eternally impenetrable by any outside force whatsoever unless you decide to take them down by hand.

See? Easy as pie, and on top of that, you knocked it up masterfully fast. You have no fucking clue how non-dwarves are able to complicate building construction to such a ludicrous degree.

Rokko, at least, lets you work in silence (Estelle doesn't have a choice, being out like a light). You can feel the Blue Bomber's eyes on your back, although that's mostly because she turns her head to watch as you move around and you can hear her helmet scraping against the rock floor. You foresee another round of repairs in her eventual future.

Soon enough, you've got a nice set of walls in place, surrounding you and sealing you off from the outside worGODDAMMIT! Ceilings!

You bang your head against the unyielding rock with a muffled curse, ignoring the pain and, behind you, another scrape from Rokko's helmet. Need to build a fucking ceiling above your head! You can't DO that from the first floor! Okay, Mojang can build ceilings from one story down, but she's a wizard with dodgy physics, so you'll- you'll have to build a RAMP or something and STAND on a wall while you BUILD the ceiling and- and-

You sigh and get to work, frowning in consternation. This'll be tough.

>No Success!

Alright, so if you put a ramp /there/, and build an extra wall /here/- shit, no, you have to build the extra wall in the middle-ish, otherwise you won't have any room to move, but- GAH, you almost sealed yourself into a corner! What was that building rule again? Last in, first out? So that means you have to build this thing FIRST, and then you, um...

... while you ARE a dwarf, you're not really an architect or a mason. Walls are all well and good, but for some reason, you're getting kinda hung up with this whole ceiling bullshit. It takes you far too long to figure out the physics involved in getting up on top of the walls, and even longer for you to figure out a way to lay down ceiling tiles without, say, accidentally sealing yourself OUTSIDE the mini-fortress.

Dwarves are masterwork builders, but that sort of thing is a real and present danger that pops up more often than you'd like. You don't know what sort of face you'd make if your Gamindustri gravestone read something like "Here lies Urist. Eaten by a spider monster because she fucked up the build order. This gravestone depicts a Momuz the Forgotten Beast and a dwarf. The spider is threatening the dwarf. The dwarf is cowering."

You're down to the last two ceiling tiles before there's an implosion of air and the chicken wandering around the cavern is suddenly replaced by a monstrous feathered arachnid.

Instincts kick in immediately- you freeze up, staring at Momuz with wide eyes. Your stare is returned eightfold from half the cavern away.

>[X] [FIGHTING RETREAT]
>Crossbow firing: 19, 19, 21!

>Crossbow skill goes from Competent to Skilled!
>SKILL OBTAINED: [Minor Called Shot]
>When firing a crossbow, Urist may choose to sacrifice +1 of her skill bonus to specifically target a limb. A hit, glancing or no, will always disable that limb. Works best on monsters + minions.
>Caution: Adventurers may rely on bullshit anime/movie physics or healing and pull out bolts, causing limb damage to be temporary.

Terror gives you the sort of speed you normally only see on wild west shoot-'em-ups, and you're bracing yourself against your crossbow's recoil before you even realize what you're doing.

'Course, once you DO realize what you're doing, you've got adrelanin or whatever flowing through your veins and crossbow bolts flying everywhere and you're screaming bloody murder at Momuz, your hoarse shrieks all but drowning out the spider's chitters. The Forgotten Beast reels like your curses are physical blows raining down on its ugly mug, legs scrabbling even as you scramble back down the ramp leading into your mini-fort.

(Cont.)
>>
>>39145138
You barely notice how Rokko's propped herself up onto one elbow, green eyes lighting up the enclosed space; you're too busy wrecking the hell out of the ramp, fully intent on blocking off the hole in the ceiling with a wall or something.

To her credit, the Blue Bomber doesn't ask anything obvious, like "What's the matter?" or "Is everything okay?" She just leans back and grimly points an arm cannon toward the gap in the ceiling.

After what feels like an eternity, you finally deconstruct the ramp- but you fail to hear Momuz's legs scrabbling against the walls or venom hissing against the rock, and no horrible spider face appears in the skylight like something out of a horror movie. The Forgotten Beast is still OUT there, you can hear it chittering hoarsely to itself, but it's not... it's not moving?

Estelle, you notice, appears to be awake. She's scratching something into the floor.

It's WAY too much to hope for that Momuz has gotten bored with your mini-fort and is now just wandering around the cavern in an aimless fashion. Even in Gamindustri, you haven't survived this long by being optimistic, and you're not about to start now. Giant ravening feathery spider monsters are pretty far down on the list of things you want coming back to bite you on the ass, especially if they have venomous fangs. Mandibles. Whatever.

So you quietly reconstruct your half-ruined ramp and peek out at the Forgotten Beast. Just in case it somehow teleported up onto the roof, you hold your helmet down with one hand as if mere iron will help one fucking bit against flesh-melting poison.

Maybe for once, the gods are looking out for you. The more likely explanation is that you got really, really fucking lucky, because Momuz is writhing on the ground, massive legs twitching in pain. You can't really tell from this far away, but there's an awful lot of ichor on its face, and... either half its eyes spontaneously exploded, or you managed to literally blind the monster of your own creation.

You can't help but stare for thirty seconds, silently trying to disprove that overly optimistic conclusion with your own eyes. Once it's clear that it's not some sort of feigned ploy by Momuz, or that the writhing Forgotten Beast isn't a decoy and the REAL Forgotten Beast is about to bite your head off, you quietly swing back down to the mini-fort and give your friends the good news: the giant nightmarish spider bastard probably ain't gonna be bothering you for... oh, the next few minutes.

Rokko closes her eyes (in relief or exhaustion), her arm cannon dropping back down to 'clonk' against the floor. Estelle keeps on scratching the floor, murmuring something approximating the barest fraction of her usual bubbly happiness.

... goddammit. All this time, Estelle's ridiculous peppiness has done very little other than to make you slightly more grouchy, and now that she's NOT peppy or energetic, you can't help but feel like there's a tight knot in your stomach.

To be fair, a big part of it is that she looks like something the cat dragged in, savaged, and then spat back out. Estelle's face is pale, drawn, and smeared with streaks of blood, and her armor's scraped up- and that's not even the worst of it. She's lying ON the worst of it, a ragged tear crossing down her back while her legendary armor parted like the fucking Red Sea.

You kneel down next to Estelle. Immediately, she tries to grin at you. Whether she's actually lucid or delirious is an open question. "We'll be fine," she whispers. "Just leave it to big sis. Gonna scratch out an Inn sign. Then we'll sleep an' heal up."

You're about to curse her for a goddamn fool for trying to be strong in the face of /dying horribly/, but Rokko cuts in. "D-Don't. You'll, g-glitch out."

The Dragon Warrior waves her free hand dismissively- which is to say she sort of twitches it. "Don't worry. I'll... delay it 'til we get to the next inn."

"W-Will. Lock you down for, a few d-days. At least."

You look back and forth between the prone swordswoman and robot, feeling more than a little left out. What? What are they talking about?

"J-Jury-rigging this, m-mini-fort as an inn," stutters Rokko, struggling back up onto an elbow. Her blonde hair falls across her face and a shoulder, but she's not really in a position to push it back. "G-Glitchy. Estelle will, catch the worst of it l-later."

"Better than dying /now/," Estelle manages to murmur, in good humor against all odds. "Dealt with my fair share of legendary glitches. Had a lot of them when I was first starting out, you know." A little of her energy seeps back in as she reminisces.

... Armok help you, it's like you're listening to two old fogeys talking on their deathbeds- not that you say this out loud. Does Rokko have any other suggestions...?

The Blue Bomber shakes her head. "N-Negative. Running on, empty. Burned through, weapons gauges. Still have i-internet."

"Then we'll heal up. Take out the monster. Keep on going," retorts Estelle, still scratching against the ground. You really can't help but notice she's writing with her own blood. "Into the legend..."

Weird problem with tables, constantly mutable, capable of throwing people across the room and prone to murder-fueled rampages or doing slipping people on space lube, then laughing as she melts their face or reverses their gender.

I can't imagine ss13 being a good guy. Even the good guys in ss13 are dicks.

Much as it pains me to admit it we still have the rest of the adventure to go through. And those consequences.

How bad will the glitching be?

I mean I don't want to do it if there's a chance Estelle will die, but we are kind of low on options. If it's not too bad then I'm all for it, we take care of Estelle when she glitches out later if it'll save us now. We also might be able to help her out with out Bug Tracker/DFHack

>[B1] [FORTIFICATIONS] Carve fortifications in the walls. Might as well finish off Momuz from the safety and comfort of your own little mini-fort, right?
But definitely this, also we'll want to do the floors too, don't want that mistake happening again.

No Estelle you may not sacrifice yourself for something this stupid, we are now enacting plan GTFO.

ss13 is a robot controlled by tiny people lord help you if the clown the operative or the traitor is in command
>>
>>39146419
Urist sort of did help heal up Estelle! Although at her current level of skill (zero), all she was really able to do was stuff cloth on/around the wound to stop Estelle from bleeding out until she could magically heal herself into stability.

>>39146453
From what Urist can tell, Estelle won't DIE, and it'll most likely just mess her up for a few hours or days at a later point in time (basically, the next time they go to sleep in a normal place like normal people).

Of course, whether they can AFFORD to have Estelle conked out or whatever is a different matter entirely. Attempts at helping with Bug Tracker/DFHack are entirely possible, though.

>>39146510
Sorry, meant to say "from what Urist /currently knows/," as in what Estelle and Rokko told her.

Let's do it then, long term planning is for suckers anyway. We'll let Big Sis do her thing and then we'll take care of her for sure later.

We should take a chance to scan her with Bug Tracker now so we can compare it to when she does glitch out.

DO NOT CARVE FORTIFICATIONS, GIANT SPIDERS CAN SPIT WEB THROUGH THEM.

And imps can tunnel through floors now. So, yeah. Time to amscray.
>>
>>39146554
Robots are... sort of beyond Urist's abilities, even during a fey mood!

>>39146574
Sadly, traditional JRPG inns don't really exist in DF; the only types of healing are 1) doctor-assisted and 2) naturally over (far too much) time. Besides, Estelle is sort of converting the mini-fort into an inn, in her own way.

Thanks a lot for your participation, and see you next time BUT WAIT, THERE'S SOME MORE STUFF ON THE WAY BECAUSE HA HA! TIME FOR MOJANG ORIGIN STORY POV THING.

You are Mojang. You know with absolute certainty that you’re the moe personification of Minecraft. Right off the bat, you are aware that lightning bolts do strange things to your body, you can destroy things with your fists alone, and- perhaps just a little more importantly- you’ve got enough gunpowder stashed inside your body to blow up a small stone house.

Frankly, that’s a lot to take in all at once for someone who, for all intents and purposes, just popped into existence about three minutes ago.

Later, you’ll learn that the vast majority of adventurers appear in one of the four great nations of Gamindustri. Most of them will immediately form a deep attachment to their motherland and then join up with the International Adventurer’s Guild, where they’ll embark on dungeon runs for patriotic glory and personal empowerment. It’s a neat and tidy system so long as you don’t think too hard about it.

And then there are those who don’t feel an attachment to any of the nations and, instead of waking up in a calm environment full of civilization and other people, pop into existence in the twisted, chaotic wasteland that is the Gamindustri Graveyard, like you did.

The first few hours of your life pass in a blur, and they are far from your proudest moments. You’re still trying to sort through everything stuffed inside your brain- not only do you have scattered memories of infinitely mining through the ether and fairies sitting in books, but on top of that, existence is really, really scary. It’s already a sensory overload, and it’s absolutely terrifying.

(Cont.)
>>
>>39147291
The sky above the Graveyard is a deep, swirling purple, and the clouds themselves seem swollen with fury; all around you are scattered electronics, rusted to uselessness save for computer monitors, fitfully flickering through shattered screens. Wires whip up around your unprotected calves, glass crunches underfoot, and there’s probably something stalking you, and there’s the sense that something is screaming in the background-

In hindsight, you’re not sure how you managed to stay sane. What you DO remember is a clear purpose- no, you can’t really call it anything other than an overriding need.

Find tree.

Punch tree.

Harvest wood.

And then do… what?

You don’t know. But you’re really, really interested in finding out.

You walk on through the wasteland like some sort of zombie, mumbling feverishly to yourself and stumbling like a drunkard. Eventually, the sky brightens up, and the landscape seems to change; the wires lashing at your calves grow more sporadic, and then stop altogether. Plants eventually replace the glass, first in fitful tufts of half-dead weeds and then progressing onto actual fields of grass, scattered with bushes and flowers. You’d be grateful for the shift in scenery if you’d actually had enough room in your mind to be grateful, but it all passes you by.

Somewhere in the mountains, closer to (what you would later learn to be) the sea bordering the Leanbox landmass than to Lastation, you finally find one. You find a tree.

You stand there swaying for a good few minutes, staring up in awe at its magnificence. It’s the first tree you’ve ever seen before in your life, but it’s exactly as you imagined it would look like: a thick trunk, brown bark, branches up above, and green leaves even further up. You could weep. In fact, you probably DO shed a few tears of happiness, because it’s the first thing you’ve seen that isn’t actively trying to kill you or drive you insane.

(Cont.)
>>
>>39147307
The natural course of action, something you still hold onto even today, is to immediately start punching the tree. You get into a good rhythm, ignoring the pain in your knuckles; it doesn’t seem strange to your glitch mind that the tree isn’t dropping lumber, even though you also expect it to explode at any moment. This lasts until a voice interrupts you.

“Urist Twelfthbay cancels task: Interrupted by. By…”

You turn around and meet the first person you’ve ever seen in your life. With the benefit of hindsight, she’s really not much to look at: a scrawny wild-eyed girl far shorter than you, dressed in uncured animal hides streaked with blood, and clutching a wooden axe in one hand with a white-knuckled grip. Her other hand is clutching a handful of angrily buzzing bees, but as you have no frame of reference to determine whether this is normal or not, you sort of ignore it. There’s also the way she’s sort of tied her unkempt hair under and around her chin, like some child’s approximation of a beard.

Right now, you’re not much to look at yourself, so you don’t really judge.

The girl- Urist- trails off, peering closely at you. You stare right back at her, your brow furrowing a little as you try to figure this out. After a moment, your first words bubble out of your throat.

“What’s that in your hand?”

Urist blinks. She holds up her handful of bees, tilting her head curiously. That’s- well, okay, that IS something you wanted to ask, but…

“Your other hand.”

Her eyes light up in something approximating understanding, and then she speaks up in a clear high voice that’s actually sort of adorable. “It’s an a-“ Urist spits out an unprintable curse and clears her throat so hard that you’re afraid she’ll wreck her vocal chords. “An axe,” she finishes, her voice hoarser and deeper. “For cutting trees. Can’t punch trees.”

(Cont.)
>>
>>39147330
I'm honestly surprised the punching didn't work for her. Maybe she just needs to figure out how to apply her physics?
>>
>>39147330
You work this out, your fingers worrying at the sleeves of your green hoodie. “How did you make the axe in the first place?”

You watch, utterly fascinated, as Urist’s brain nearly breaks itself in half trying to work out what you'd later realize was a chicken-or-egg question, except about fifty times worse. When it’s clear she’s not going to reply, you decide to demonstrate- a few more punches causes the tree to explode in a shower of wooden blocks, which you promptly tuck away into your inventory as easily as instinct. “See? It’s not so hard- ow.” You move your knuckles to your mouth, tasting blood.

Somewhere in the depths of Urist’s eyes, a switch flicks on. “Recovering wounded,” she parrots, tucking her axe and bees into the recesses of her animal hide belt. Before you know what’s going on, she’s hefted you up above her head like a sack of potatoes, one hand at the small of your back and the other between your shoulder blades. “Recovering wounded!”

“H-Hey, wait-“

“Urist Twelfthbay cancels converse: Recovering wounded!”

“Put me down!”

“Urist Twelfthbay cancels converse: Recovering wounded!”

“Please stop referring to yourself in the third person!!”

“Urist Twelfthbay cancels converse: Recovering wounded!”

>>39147409
Sounds like people born in the Graveyard aren't all that well put together.
>>
>>39147416
You stop struggling after the third time she accidentally drops you, and you pretty much give up complaining after the thirtieth repetition. Back then, Urist wasn't much of a conversationalist- but then, you were both really, really glitchy back then. Really, it's a miracle either of you survived long enough to start adventuring in earnest!

Of course, at the time, you'd resigned yourself to being rendered into your component parts and/or used to repair her leather coat. That feeling only got stronger when you saw Urist's home, and strengthened about a millionfold when you realized that hole in the ground WAS, very literally, Urist's home.

That hole in the ground was her first mini-fortress, and the place where, thanks to your future senpai, you learned pretty much everything there is to know. And you're pretty sure that neither of you would've been fixed enough to function if you hadn't met each other.

... of course, at the time, all you could do was struggle and fall to the ground a /fourth/ time.

(To be continued?)
>>
>>39147416
