As you expected, the further north you head, the thicker the fog becomes.

Despite the warm summer air, it's a cold fog, that persists throughout the day, and which feels like a lingering winter frost, somehow overstaying its welcome by months. The air makes you shiver, more for the promise of what it contains than for the cold itself.

You turn around, worried. As you expected, the crew of the Gloria are less than thrilled about the situation.

Well, they didn't know what they were volunteering for exactly. To be honest, there was no way they would. No one has really SEEN a fleet of first-age-class ships sailing the seas, crewed by ghosts and skeletons and led by Abyssals.

Well, until now. Now... there they are, just in front of you, even if they're hidden by a barrier of fog.

They don't need to stop for rest or supplies. And there's no navy in the West that can be a threat to them. Except maybe the Realm's Western Fleet, but you're not going to be so lucky.

They're going to be in Tianna in five days, and you've got to slow them down a bit. To buy some time for Maka and the others.

And you have absolutely no idea how.

"...Sir, wouldn't it have been better if you just told Lady Maka about your intentions?"

Marat Adrinazon, the ship's captain appointed by Mikahil and Valeriana, is no coward, but you understand perfectly his nervousness. He's clenching his sheathed cutlass like it could protect him against the Abyssals beyond that fog barrier.

"...She wouldn't have let me go, or she would've insisted that I bring someone else with me." You turn to stare back into the moving fog. "I'm useless at home right now. Everyone is organizing things, building, preparing, training. I can't do any of that, I'm just a dumb idiot who is good with a sword. The one thing I can do is buy the people in Tianna some time. Do some damage."

Marat fidgets nervously. You know what he wants to say but is too scared to. It doesn't take a genius to guess.

"No, I'm not suggesting we should board them all by ourselves. I'm not quite THAT dumb." The Gloria is a good ship, but it's made of wood and driven by sails. It can't compare to a single Swift Midday Brilliance-class warship, much less a fleet.

You need a plan. And you can't risk losing the Gloria, no matter what.

>I'll get a lifeboat and sail up to the fleet. Then I'll improvise.
>Land me on a small island near their route. I'll draw their attention from there.
>I'll dive and swim up to them. They won't see me coming.
>Don't worry. Sail into the fog and pull alongside one of the Abyssal ships.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a lot of allies and friends, and have a powerful Manse under construction.
But Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress built in an ancient, forgotten age, and although this is kept secret, two Deathlords are seeking to obtain it.
The Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine, ghost of your past incarnation, seeked it as a weapon to cut her ties to the Neverborn. But you have persuaded her to try and seek redemption in the eyes of the Sun in other ways, and count her as an unlikely ally.
But now the Silver Prince is coming, to punish her and claim the Titan for himself in the name of Oblivion. And this looks like a battle you won't be able to talk your way out of...

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Solar%20Quest

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability. Yes, this means that the more people are posting, the stronger Maka is, up to a limit of her attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

As you can guess, this is the new game system I've been mentioning.

http://pastebin.com/pvAZpsJ6

This is how the new system works in detail.

The short version is that now there are two types of Essence. Burn Essence is regenerated one point per action, Commit Essence is regenerated one point per scene.

Some charms will have two different effects depending on which Essence they're activated with.

Burn Essence is usually for instantaneous effects. Commit Essence is for effects with a long duration, or more powerful.

Charms never stack with other charms, not even themselves.

No, you only flare when you do the committing, but all subsequent flares are increased by 1 (visually).

"I'll get a lifeboat and sail up to the fleet." You explain to Marat.

He stands there, looking at you, waiting for you to continue.

"Then I'll improvise." You conclude.

He sighs. "...Very well then. Where should we wait for you?"

"Hide the Gloria behind the coastline of those small atolls on the portside. Try and camouflage it best as you can." You order him, while motioning to two crewmen to lower one of the Gloria's lifeboats into the ocean. Which they do, but you notice that their gaze is ever drawn towards the fog field as it sails, quickly and effortlessly, through the ocean, closer and closer.

"...Are you SURE that they can't see through their own fog, sir?" One of them asks you.

"Reasonably sure." You lie reassuringly.

The lifeboat hits the water, and you drop down onto it.

"Godspeed, sir." Maras salutes you as you untie the ropes.

"Stay out of trouble." You salute back. "If I don't make it back by dawn tomorrow, or you have good reason to suspect I won't make it back period, sail back to Tianna without hesitation."

"...what will we say to Lady Maka?" He asks, worriedly.

"That I'll be a bit late." You grin and try and make a show of confidence. "Don't worry, Maka will not take it out on you. I know her."

"That's... not what I'm worried about, sir." He mumbles. "You know, she cares for you a lot."

"I know. That's why I had to lie. If I told her the truth, she'd be coming here trying to get me back home right now." You sit down and grab the oars. "And that's stupid. She's too useful in Tianna right now. But my place is here, on the battlefield. It's the only place where I can be useful." You look back up to him. "Go behind that atoll now."

"Yes. Best of luck, sir."

You give the oars three good strokes and propel yourself away from the Gloria and in the foggy cloud's trajectory. Now, you just have to wait.

Out of habit, you tense your fingers slightly, feeling the touch, one after another, of the weapons you keep stored Elsewhere. Especially the Grand Daiklave.

Maka's not telling you everything, that much is obvious. Where does this enormous weapon come from? How did she find so much Orichalcum?

A question for another time. For now, you trust her motives, and are grateful that you can wield such a weapon.

(...You should also think of a better name for it, maybe.)

The fog is nearly upon you. Maybe you should adjust your position...

>Dead center. Whatever is inside that fog, you'll hit it head on.
>To the side. Try and enter the fog from an angle.
>Capsize the rowboat and hide under, waiting for the ships to be over you.

We don't, even if we did Ox Body is one of those charms that you can buy multiple times.

It's a difference in systems, before we relied on the fact that we could cancel out damage entirely to get by in fights, not that that much now that I think about it, now that Minimum damage is a thing we can't expect to go through fights with full health at the end, we need more health to deal with that.
>>
Just as the cold fog begins to wash over you, you leap overboard and flip the small rowboat over, hiding just below it.

The water is crystal clear, enough for sunlight to diffuse under the surface. As the cloud passes over you, you feel the temperature drop and the light disappearing, but you can still see a bit.

Dark shapes swim on the ocean above, heading straight towards you, incredibly fast. The first one heads straight for you...

...and then, just as you prepare to dive sideways and avoid the hull plowing through you, you notice that the ship suddenly decreases in speed and moves slightly to one side to avoid you.

You're really amazed by the ship's responsiveness and maneuverability. That kind of stunt would be utterly impossible to pull even with a ship as agile as the Gloria.

You hear distant, muffled voices, but cannot quite make up what they're saying.

>Stay hidden and wait.
>Flip the lifeboat over and reveal yourself.
>Flip the lifeboat over and use it as a springboard to leap up onto the closest ship.

You hang on to the small hull of the rowboat for what feels like an eternity, as the ships slowly sail past you.

You feel the noise and impacts of their essence-driven engines hitting the water around you, the throb transmitting through the water and making you feel almost like the ocean itself is vibrating.

Without being able to see, you can only rely on guesswork and timing. You breathe deeply and then-

Suddenly, you hear a loud impact, almost an explosion, that wracks your nerves, as the tip of a bodkin arrow point materializes, peeking through the wooden hull by just a little bit.

As the echo of the impact disappears, you stay perfectly still...

...and hear some distant noises... maybe talking, from the ships' decks. No other arrow hit your capsized rowboat.

A random act by some bored crewman? The arrow didn't bite so deep to make you think it was a serious effort by some Exalted, and if they had any suspicion that you were hiding here, they'd have hit you with something far worse. Still, the couple millimeters of steel point that gleam in the refracted light of the ocean trouble you.

(cont.)
>>
...Since when do skeletons get bored? Do they have mortal troops with them? Or are they ghosts, shielded from the sun by the enveloping fog? Your mind races, and you almost expect the arrow to explode any moment now.

It doesn't happen, thankfully, and the ships keep flowing by. Taking another deep breath, you submerge, and swim frenetically towards the closest hull you can find. It should be somewhere near the tail-end of the formation... maybe.

You grab the hull, barely achieving a hold on the sleek, sheer metallic surface. The ship's speed and the strength of the currents around you almost fill your lungs with water.

Not him but, without going into detail or breaking out the math in the new system there's more ways to take damage, both in the minimum amount we can take and the lack of damage cap that we had before. With how we play Maka and how we built her, right now she's a Meat Shield without much meat.

You grit your teeth, peeking your head above the ferociously fast sprays of water the hull is cutting in its wake just long enough to grab a breath of fresh air, and then dive it right back down, holding on to the speeding craft's surface with just one hand.

Your other hand, you pull back, struggling against the current, and use to reach into Elsewhere.

[SUMMONING THE LOYAL STEEL]

In a flash of light and a bang of suddenly displaced water, your massive blade appears. Wielding something to large underwater is like handling a large oar or surf board, so you keep it edge-first towards the current, and fill yourself with Essence.

Time to dance.

[BRIGHT BLADE STANCE] (Commit 3/5)
[HUNGRY TIGER STANCE] (Burn 3/5)

[Physical + Melee = 7 9 9 2 10 3 8 4 2 1 5 7 8 8 = 9 successes]

You slam the blade into the hull, below the waterline, and with a strain that almost makes you feel like every bone in your body were about to explode into a shower of splinters, drive it deep inside, and turn it in your hand like a bottle opener, tearing a gash into the reinforced steel surface of the technomagical ship.

Letting go of your blade back into Elsewhere, finally you have something decent to hold on. You grab with both hands the edge of the hole you just slashed, as you feel the water flowing inside at an alarming rate and the vessel suddenly slowing down.

Mortals don't have minimum damage. So death by ping damage isn't a problem.

The problem comes when we come across magical enemies. If we go from one batch of significant opposition to the next, then we'll get pinged down anyway.

It's a matter of mooks not hurting us and Exalts hurting us. But we don't care about mooks regardless and against Exalts the defense is lessened. And Exalts are we we'll be fighting most of the time anyway...

So yeah. Mildly annoying.

Let me clarify some of my speculation a bit, AiRS will still be great.

Let's assume it'll have six soak, plus Maka's base soak for a total of 9 with a DV of 5. We're still going to be really tanky in terms of reducing damage we take, but we're still going to be taking damage, that's what more health is for.

>Uhh forgive me if I'm wrong but wasn't that one of the things EF set out to fix? How we couldn't take hits worth a damn, and now it seems to be even more of an issue?

Maka is still tough, and her XP are well-invested. Her current build is still viable. She's no longer nearly entirely invulnerable even against Exalted attackers, because that was just clumsy system design.

Remember, if you can do it, the bad guys can do it too. In the old system, I only had two choices for opponents: "people you can damage", which you could take down more or less easily, and "people you can't damage", which were invincible as long as their soak was higher than your damage potential.

In this system, Maka is still a high-soak character. As an example, even if Karas hit her with everything he has, he'd still probably deal only 1 HL of damage unless he manages to roll a very lucky attack.

I consider that a lot. People will take damage when fighting people. This is not mindblowing.

Or we could go back to the old system, where I send against you a guy with Soak 3 and see how well you handle it.

(Yeah, I follow and post in other threads at the same time and sometimes just forget to put my trip back on. Sometimes I forget to take the trip off, which is a lot more embarrassing.)

As you begin to hear screams and panicked cries from within and outside the ship (so either ghosts or mortal crews, at least partially), you leap back underwater.

You briefly consider swimming back to the rowboat, but you lost sight of it, probably now far behind you.

Peeking your head up from underwater, you glance at the rest of the fleet. You can only see other three ships hanging by, quickly slowing down and turning to one side in formation. The rest of the fleet disappeared.

So they split their forces. You wonder why...

>>39195139
Right. There's a limit on bonuses, as in, you can't stack shit past a certain point, but there's no hard limit on damage because it increases depending on how many successes you score on the to-hit roll.

If you care to know, this gentleman >>39195021 was right to guess that AiRS gives a soak of +6, which is the maximum in the new system (equivalent to superheavy artifact plate). that gives Maka a Soak of 9 and a DV of 4 (not 5, unfortunately. Phys 3 + Dawn 3 + Parry 1).

A Soak of 9 means she can take Karas' Grand Daiklave to the face, plus two successes on the to-hit roll (Karas rolls 12 dice with scenelong dice-adders, which averages about 6 successes, so that's about what he can hope to score against Maka), and just lose 1 of her 7 health levels. And that's taking a hit from a combat-focused Solar.

Maka shouldn't be immune to the hits of a combat-focused Solar. No one should. The fact that she's going to take very low damage from them is already a lot, don't you think?

(sorry, I forgot to copy-paste it. 3 2 5 8 8 8 5 = 3 successes)

You hang back in the water, sticking to the ship's shadow, and try and focus on the ship's maneuvers...

[HEROISM-ENCOURAGING PRESENCE] (Burn 3/5)

[Mental + Dawn = 3 4 1 3 8 6 7 1 7 6 = 3 successes]

You spot the crewmen, little black-clad figures at this distance, buzzing about on the ships' decks. You notice one of them holding two lit torches, signalling something with jerky, sudden motions. From another ship, someone else responds.

The signals for "check the water", and "prepare to tow".

You see the men at their posts, with bows and flamepieces, and the crews at the essence weapons, but they don't seem at a particularly high state of readiness. Maybe they think the ship had a normal breakdown, or it hit something under the waterline by accident.

In any case, the other ships have turned around and are quickly approaching. Everyone's attention will be focused on the damaged ship and the water around, so hanging near here is going to be dangerous...

You have no time to hesitate.
Torn between the instinct of swimming far away, and the pull of the water flowing into the hull as the ship comes to a full stop, you let go and leave the current to do the rest.

You are sucked into the hull, and land knee-first into a bleached-white skeleton wearing a water-proofed black leather jacket in the fashion of a naval uniform, exploding his skull in a billion splinters.

The hold is half-flooded, filled with boxes and barrels either free-floating or quickly sinking, crowded by a dozen skeletons in uniform. Menials, doing the job on the ship that are too boring or dangerous for actual, thinking crewmen, you guess. They have wooden beams and metal plates, hammers and nails, and stranger, techy tools you have never seen.

"...What the hell-"

Hanging behind them, you see two of those thinking crewmen, wearing the same uniform but clearly made of flesh and blood, and utterly astonished by your sudden appearance as they stare you down.

Meanwhile, not having received any different order, the skeletons merrily ignore you and keep working at the gash in the hull.

I'm not feeling well at all today, I thought I could do this, but I don't think I can, and I think I'm running a fever right now. I'll go get a thermometer and some meds and see if I'll feel better in a bit.

Again, sorry. See you in a bit, I'll let you know.

No worries EF, take care bro, don't ruin your health on our account.

A random suggestion, but if you find yourself without the time for a thread but want to get something out for the quest you could always just writeup a self contained little writeup about something like the daily life of one of the characters tia from their perspective and see how other aspects of the setting are and how they interact with other characters without needing to dedicate a long amount of time to the quest.

It's soemthing I'd like to see, outside perspectives like these threads and that are things I love reading about. Might try it myself if I find the time.

Don't worry about it EF and thanks for taking the time to try anyway.
>>
>>39196199
Yeah, sorry. I have to cancel the thread, I can't stay up and running. I'll try and make up to you another day, but today I can't do anything right.
>>
>>39196562
no worries boss, thanks for the thread, take care and get better
>>
>>39196562

It's alright, EF. Thanks for the thread!
>>
>>39196562
No problem EF, thanks for trying though, it was fun.

Hope you get better.
>>
>>39196199
good luck.
>>
>>39196562
Don't sweat it EF, it was good to have you back for however short it was, I've missed you and these threads so thanks for running, now go get some rest and get well soon.

What little we played of the new system was pretty fun all said and done, being able to use our charms was great.

We should see about buying at least one purchase of it then.

By the end of Maka's next thread she'll have 18 XP assuming we didn't buy Eclipse 3, 10 for Lightning Speed and 8 for Ox Body. If we did buy Eclipse we can put off Ox Body until our next purcahse if we go that route.

That is unless we decide to change our mind about Lightning Speed for some reason.
>>
>>39196753
Sounds like a plan to me.
>>
>>39196753
What about ghosts then?
Intangible murder maniacs seem... quiet a bother
>>
>>39197412
Ghost are kind of annoying since it'll take us at least two charm purchases to get there, at least if the general charm tree hasn't changed at least, we might want to go for them after these purchases

Even if we can't deal with them personally, we have Abyssal allies that can, so we aren't completely helpless against them.
>>
>>39197512
How about asking for help from our new... deathly ally?
>>
>>39197694
For stuff?

I don't think we can get cheaper charms if that's what you mean, but we can see if they have any anti-ghost stuff to hand out.
>>
>>39197842
If you don't have the charms to get something done, get the artifacts.
So yeah, stuff. lots'o'stuff
>>
Im on it
