You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

After the raven finished informing the Knight-Captain on what happened at the farm, the captain decided it would be best for you to have an Honor Guard, a collection of people to serve as your bodyguards if something should happen again. Though you were reluctant, you saw the logic in it considering this was your second time being kidnapped, so you let it go. You asked Galadriel for advice, spoke with Gavren for a bit, and finally went to sleep. Now you'll have to ask around and figure out who else you want on your honor guard.

You wake up the next morning to the sound of knocking at your door. Groaning, you pull yourself out of bed and get dressed before answering the door. You find Erika waiting on the other side, arms crossed.

"Breakfast is starting soon, thought I'd come wake you up before you slept through it."

Oh that's right, you asked her to wake you up in the mornings. You'd almost forgotten after the incident at the border. Good thing she didn't forget, you very well may have slept through breakfast otherwise. Even now, you're still a bit tired and sore from the jailbreak yesterday and the subsequent march all the way to the border.

>"Right, thanks Erika. Probably would have slept through it actually, I'm still tired from the jailbreak."
>"Ugh, morning already? Listen, could you do me a favor and just grab me a plate for later? I'm kind of exhausted from yesterday."

I am leary about drafting friends as body guards. Seems a way to force distance in the relationship.

We need her advise on potential recruits, not her as a bodyguard.

Because if she joins "as a friend" instead of a bodyguard, we have a much larger maximum party capacity.

You stifle a yawn and rub the sleep out of your eyes. "Right, thanks Erika. Probably would have slept through it, actually. I'm still tired from the jailbreak." You remember your talk with Laurentius yesterday about finding people for your honor guard, and decide now would actually be a good time to bring that up. "Actually, great timing, I wanted to talk to you about what the captain told me yesterday."

"After he sent us out of the room?"

"Yeah. Apparently, he wants me to put together an honor guard."

"Really? Good, I think you need one after getting snatched by demons twice."

"Hey, it's not like I chose to get kidnapped by that doppelganger. She knocked me out before I could do anything."

"But you did get yourself caught back at the border. Accident or not, I'm with the captain on this one. Once is bad enough, but twice is too much."

Crap, sounds like she's still a little upset with you for getting caught by those Scavengers. You can't exactly disagree with her though, most people don't come back after being kidnapped by demons the first time, and you'd really prefer not to be grabbed a third time.

"So, who's on this honor guard anyways? Has the captain picked anybody yet?"

>"Actually, he wants me to pick. I was going to ask if you'd join."

She'd still have her own obligations, like going on patrol. Anyone you pick for your honor guard will be let off their normal patrol schedules, but everyone else will still have to go on patrol as usual, so they won't be there all the time.

Gotta sleep, so I'll just put out the suggestion that you guys check the freed prisoners for doppelgangers. The demon lord might have smuggled spies and traitors in among them. Of course there's not a lot we can do about human turncoats, aside maybe from convincing them that they don't have to go through with any deal they made with demons...

Well, I'm not sure how far the weapon shifting thing goes.

there was a bunch of discussion about it early on, but I don't think we talked about "can we make fluids?" I mean, if she shifted into a super soaker, would the water in it be holy by default?

can she put napalm in it?

When are we crossing the line of reasonable messing with this mechanic?

"He said he'd let me choose who's on the honor guard actually. Anyone you'd recommend?"

"Recommend? Well, there's Daniel, Joan, and Justine I guess. Roland seems like he knows what he's doing too."

"I mean anyone other than people I already know."

She thinks about it for a moment. "Well, there's Galmar and Logain, one's a big guy with a mace and the other's a dwarf who uses his lute to cast spells. They're squad leaders though, so I don't know if the captain would let them go, or if they'd want to for that matter."

Hold on, Galmar and Logain? You remember those two, they were your squad leaders on the night patrol before you were snatched at the border. You haven't seen them fight before, but they must have done something to earn their positions, and if Erika's recommending them that must mean something.

"Alright, and anybody else?"

"Yeah, me." She declares, pointing to herself. "You've seen me fight before, I can handle it. And besides, somebody has to be there to smack some sense into you next time you do something stupid."

She can't make fluids, no. Any ranged weapons by default will fire a standard bolt/arrow of light which burns demons, but she can't produce any other sort of ammunition. That said, you can always carry around special types of ammunition and load them. Galadriel can fire mundane ammunition as well, though any ammunition that doesn't come from her will have a reduced effect against demons. It'll still burn them, but not as badly as the standard arrows.

She has a point, you know she can handle herself. Even so, you're hesitant.

"That's true, I guess. Are you sure about it though?"

"What are you talking about, of course I'm sure." She says confidently. "I wouldn't have said anything if I wasn't."

"True, but still-"

"What, do you not trust me or something?"

"No, that's not it at all, it's just that I seem to be the target and I don't like the idea of hiding behind other people, much less friends."

"You're worrying too much, I can handle myself, same for all the others. I spent most of my life here training, remember?"

That is true, if you think about it she's probably the most experienced of your friends besides Daniel and maybe Justine. She says she doesn't mind, but you still don't like the idea of hiding behind your friends, you're the guard here dammit. And like Galadriel said when you asked her for advice, what happens if one of them gets hurt?

You sigh. "I don't know, give me some time to think it over first."

"Alright, but like I said, I'm not afraid of protecting you and Galadriel. I'm sure the others feel the same way."

Not long after she says that, the two of you arrive at the dining hall and shuffle your way in. The place is even more packed than before with the escaped prisoners here, you imagine some people are gonna have to sit outside and eat in the grand hall. Thankfully though, your other friends are already there and have saved you both seats.

"Greetings Siegfried, Erika. I hope you both slept well." Daniel says as you both take a seat at the table.

"Slept like a rock." You tell him, grabbing food from the platters and adding the to your plate.

You don't say anything at first really, you're too busy scarfing down breakfast. Aureus, you missed Gunther's cooking. Back on the farm, Gavren would come back with food for everyone at the house, but it was bland and usually cold unless you built a fire to warm it up. And you were only on the farm for a few days, you can't imagine what the others who spent months or maybe years on the farm are thinking now.

After you finish devouring your breakfast, you decide you should probably bring up the honor guard at some point, and no better time to do that then now since everyone is gathered up.

"So, how did everything go yesterday after the captain let you all go?" You ask, beating around the bush.

"Eh, it was alright." Roland says, still finishing up his own breakfast. "Just helped the survivors get settled in is all. What about you, what did the captain want with you after we left?"

"That's actually something I wanted to talk about. He said that he wants me to put together some sort of honor guard now, so nothing like what happened with the Doppelganger or the Scavengers happens again."

"A wise idea." Justine offers. "I would have suggested the same."

"I agree, after this last incident it would be wise to find people that can protect you and Galadriel." Daniel agrees. "Has anything been set in stone yet?"

>"No, not yet. I was actually wondering if you guys had any recommendations."

You shake your head. "No, not yet. I was actually wondering if you guys had any recommendations."

The others consider who they know for a moment, discussing a few names with each other.

"There's Sigmar, I'm sure he'd be suited to the task."

"Maybe, but he's an instructor, I don't think he could dedicate the time necessary for a job like that."

"What about Ramos? I saw him fight when my squad ran into dire wolves once. He can handle himself."

"No, he's too high on the chain of command. The captain needs him there."

"What about Nerillian?" Justine finally offers. "I've seen him practice archery at the training yard before. He's good, and I don't think he has any other significant obligation."

"Yes, I believe he would make a fine addition." Daniel agrees. "I would suggest you speak with him about joining, you may find him practicing in the training yard in the afternoon, I hear he likes to practice often."

You nod. "Alright, I'll keep him in mind. Besides that though, I was actually wondering what you guys would think of joining."

"Us?" Roland asks. "Well I personally wouldn't mind, is that an offer?"

"I just wanted to ask first. I want to think things over before I ask friends to join."

"Ah, well I certainly wouldn't mind either, if you'll have me." Daniel says.

"I don't mind." Justine replies simply.

"Joan no mind either." The raven responds, sitting on Joan's shoulder. Wait, is she using him to talk for her now?

"Alright, then I'll keep everyone in mind when I make a decision." You tell them.

Shortly after, people begin to shuffle out of the dining hall. Erika and Daniel excuse themselves, since they have patrol soon. Justine, Joan, and Roland do the same, heading their own separate ways. You have three days counting today to decide who you want to be on your honor guard, meaning you have time, but shouldn't take too long making a decision.

You decide it would be best to head to the yard and find that guy Justine suggested. You file out of the dining hall with the rest of the crowd, and make your way to the training yard. The yard is filled with people as usual, either sparring with a partner or practicing with the dummies. You see Justine is here, practicing on one of the dummies as well. You also spot someone practicing his archery at the archery line, shooting at one of the targets down range. The person in question is an elven man, with blonde hair that almost looks white. It's hard to tell exactly how old an elf is, but he seems to be at a mature age, not quite old but far from young. He seems to be the only one practicing his archery at the moment, so you'd assume that's Nerillian.

You grab a bow and find a spot next to him to practice and see what he's capable of. If he notices you, then he doesn't say anything. He seems entirely focused on his training at the moment.

You knock an arrow and aim at the target down range. He pulls his own bow back around the same time, and you both fire at roughly the same time.

You fire another arrow. This time, you also hit the target dead center. Looking over, you see that Nerillian still hit the target's bullseye, but this time it was closer to the edge.

He raises an eyebrow, looking between your target and his. "Another fine shot." He offers, before he backs further away from the line and draws another arrow. Wait, is it just you, or is he challenging you?

You both fire simultaneously. The arrows hit the target with a soft "Thwick!", and you squint your eyes to see where they landed.

Both of them, dead center. Nerillian nods and raws another arrow.

"Not bad." He tells you. It's an honest compliment, but you detect a tinge of competitiveness there as well. This, time he turns around and walks all the way back, across the practice yard and all the way to the opposite wall. People that are in the way move to the side and watch curiously. That's a really long shot, is he just trying to show off, or just confident?

>In for a copper, in for a pound. Walk all the way back with him.

You draw the bowstring back as far as it will go, aim down the shaft of the arrow, and release. Nerillian does the same, and both arrows fly side by side across the length of the practice yard.

You have to walk back over to see the results of your shot. A good shot, right in the red circle surrounding the yellow bullseye. Nerillian's arrow, however, has managed to hit dead center once again. Some of the crusaders start clapping, and you join in. Nerillian smiles and does an exaggerated bow, before everyone returns to what they were doing and he returns to the firing line.

"You did well, better than I'd have expected." He shifts his bow under his left arm, and offers you his right hand for a handshake. "Nerillian, apologies for getting too showy there."

"Don't worry about it, you'll have to show me how you did that some time though." You shift your bow under your arm and accept his handshake. "Siegfried Schmidt, you might have heard of me."

"Of course, I remember you. You're Galadriel's new champion, the one Captain Laurentius introduced about a month ago."

Right, you'd almost forgotten about that. "Just a temporary champion, but yeah. Where did you learn to shoot like that?"

"I was a hunter, once upon a time. Made a name for myself in the region I lived. After I came to the watchtower, I've only gotten better. Demons make for more challenging quarries than mere beasts, after all."

That's a bit of an understatement, you think to yourself. "That's true. In any case, I actually came here to speak with you, before we ended up trying to outdo each other."

"Did you now? What for?"

"Well, after recent events, Captain Laurentius wants me to put together an honor guard of sorts. Someone I know suggested I come ask you, and now I think I see why."

"Ah, I see. Then I take it I've made a good first impression?"

"Yeah, I'd say so." You joke. "That said, you're not obligated to join if you'd rather not."

He considers the offer for a moment, before nodding his head. "I do not mind. Serving as the champion's honor guard is a great honor, temporary or no. I gladly accept."

You grin. "Alright, glad that's settled then. Good to have you aboard, Nerillian."

"Likewise, champion. Now, I believe my patrol will be leaving soon, so I must be on my way. If you should need me, I am usually out here practicing."

With that, Nerillian hangs up the practice bow and quiver, and exits the training yard. Alright, that's one down, and at least three more to go.

See if you can't find berry girl and find out if she'd be interested in becoming a crusader/honor guard.

I feel she'd be a pretty good choice as she wouldn't have any duties in the tower that we would be taking her away from, she's proficient with a sword and with a bit of training would get even better, and we know she can be trusted.

>>

Elves aren't much different from humans, except they live much longer. They're not immortal, but they do benefit from really long lives. To give you an idea, the knight-captain is very, very old, and he's at least 200 years old. Yet still pretty spry for his age. Dwarves live shorter lives than humans, and humans are right in the middle, living roughly 60-70 years on average.

Well, you might as well look for more recruits now rather than waiting until later. You remember Erika suggested talking to Galmar and Logain, you're not sure if they can join because of their positions, but you can at least ask. If nothing else, they'll probably know one or two people you could ask instead.

Finding the two of them in this large fortress is difficult. Spotting them when they're close by is not, as Galmar stands well over the rest of the tower's occupants. Standing next to him is the much shorter Logain, still carrying his lute. You call out to them, and they turn to face you.

"Well, if it isn't young Siegfried!" Logain says, as friendly as ever. "You know, we were quite worried when you disappeared. The captain wouldn't tell us the full details until just recently, you've done a great thing for these people, freeing them from that accursed farm."

"It was very dangerous though." Galmar adds. "You should be more careful in the future, both for yours and Galadriel's sake."

"Right, sorry. Actually, that leads into why I was looking for you two. The captain has decided to put together an honor guard after what happened, and-"

>"I was wondering if either of you would be willing to join."
>"I was hoping you two would have some suggestions."

Which is why we should ask her.

Look, I'm not saying we should whisk her away from her mom like some kind of child kidnapper, just tell her that if she's interested we would make for a fine candidate for a crusader and possibly honor guard. Even if she's interested she would have to let her mom know what's going on, but considering the good reputation the tower has in this region I wouldn't be surprised if her mom was honored that she was asked to join like that.

"-and I was wondering if either of you would be willing to join."

"Us?" Logain asks. "While it's flattering that you would trust us with such a position, I'm not sure whether the captain would be alright with reassigning us. After all, Galmar is a Lieutenant, and I myself am a sergeant. If you could convince him though, I certainly wouldn't mind."

"Nor would I." Galmar agrees.

You nod. "I kind of figured that would be the case, thanks anyways. Would either of you happen to know anyone else I could ask though?"

"Someone else? Hmm...Not too sure myself. Galmar?"

"I think I know someone. Follow me."

You oblige, and follow the towering knight up the stairs. He leads you to the double doors leading into the chapel, where you used to meet the doppelganger impersonating a priestess for meditation sessions. You can hear someone talking inside.

Well, it has been a while since you've been to church, and this is a good chance to learn more about who this person Galmar's recommending is, so you open the double oak doors to the chapel and step inside.

The chapel has a modest amount of attendees today. You find an empty pew in the back and take a seat. Galmar and Logain join you shortly. You notice one of the stained glass windows is different from the last time you were here, maybe that's the one they had to replace after the doppelganger broke through it to make her escape.

The priest standing behind the front podium doesn't actually look like a priest. Rather than the usual cassock you've seen priests wear, he is armored from head to toe in platemail, with a white surcoat with blue borders. In the center of the surcoat is a symbol of a winged sword rather than the watchtower's standard coat of arms. At his waist hangs a one handed hammer, and you see a shield leaning against the podium.
>>
>>39211796
"...And so it was that Aureus stood up for his creations, and commanded his twin brother Malal to cease his senseless slaughter. But Malal, outraged at his brother's perceived transgressions, would not stand down. And so, with a heavy heart, Aureus went to battle with his dear brother, for the sake of all creation. They fought for seven days and seven nights, and it is said that no one could look upon the scene lest they be reduced to ash by the raw power of the divine brothers' conflict. On the seventh night, a decisive blow was struck by the enraged Malal. But, while his brother was left open, Aureus dealt a fatal blow against his brother as well. As beings born from the raw aether of the Void, their blood was so filled with the essence of life that it formed into living beings. The Angels, children of Aureus, led by the wise firstborn Aurelius, and the Demons, children of Malal, led by the powerful firstborn Malaphas. Quickly, the twin brothers of the Void succumbed to their wounds, their forms dissolving back into the Aether and returning to the Void, just as all beings do when they pass. To this day, we honor the memory of our benevolent creator, who gave his life to save us all. Remember his sacrifice as you go into battle, let his courage inspire you to greatness, and no demon shall stand before you, for courage shall be your shield and righteousness your sword. May the blessed Aether be with us."

With the sermon concluded, the congregation begins to stand and file out of the chapel. The armored priest sticks around, organizing papers on the podium. Once everyone else has left the chapel, Galmar stands up and leads you and Logain up to the podium where the priest diligently organizes his papers.
>>
>>39211813
"A fine sermon as always, Ganelon." Galmar says, causing the priest to look up from his papers.

"Ah, brother Galmar, it is good to see you again. What brings to me this day?"

"I come here with a friend, the temporary wielder of Galadriel." He gestures to you, and the priest, Ganelon, steps forward.

"Ah! I was not aware the champion of Galadriel was here today." He shakes your hand, nearly crushing your hand in the process. "I am Ganelon, of the Order of the Righteous Blade. It is an honor."

Order of the Righteous Blade? You've never heard of it, but it sounds like one of those militant branches of the church. The watchtowers are technically a branch of the church as well, but some churches have a militant branch all their own, which they use to serve their own needs. Ganelon's accent sounds a little funny too, you wager he's from Belmore, the kingdom north of Galloway which is home to the Grey Watchtower.

>"Thanks, but technically I'm just a temporary champion. No need to be so formal."
>"Order of the Righteous Blade? Can't say I'm familiar with them."

"Thanks, but technically I'm just a temporary champion. No need to be so formal."

"You humble me, champion. But temporary or no, you still wield the great blade of our lady Galadriel, and so you are deserving of respect."

You can almost feel Galadriel shift around in the back of your mind at the indirect compliment to her.

"Well, thank you, but even so it's fine for you to be less formal. There's no need to keep calling me Champion, for example, you can just call me Siegfried."

"A kind gesture, Siegfried. On behalf of the Order of the Righteous Blade, I accept."

"Right...Anyways, what's this Order of the Righteous Blade you're talking about? Can't say I'm familiar with them."

"I do not blame you, my order's church is far from here, in the heartlands of Belmore. We are an order of warriors dedicated to the righteous cause of the Crusades, rallied under the banner of the Righteous Blade, none other than Lady Galadriel herself, the bravest and most righteous of the celestial hosts."

Oh, so Righteous Blade is referring to Galadriel then. Now you know you can feel Galadriel shifting around awkwardly.

'Were you aware you had a whole order dedicated to you?' You ask her mentally.

'No. The three watchtowers all respect me greatly, but not so much as this man's order if he is any indication. It is...strange, to think such an order exists.

You can't fault her for feeling that way, it sounds like this man and his order practically worship her. No one actually worships the angels, though they do pray to them for aid, but to your knowledge there's no church declaration forbidding it. You don't know if Ganelon actually worships her or if he just highly respects her, but it seems to bug Galadriel either way.

"I see. What brings you all the way here then? Would you normally go to the Grey Watchtower in Belmore?"
>>
>>39212364
"Normally, yes, but my order has sent me here on a mission. They are looking to expand, and so I have come here to help organize the expansion and provide aid to the White Watchtower in the process."

"Ah, I see. Well, good luck with that."

"Thank you, Siegfried. But enough about me, what brings you here?"

"Oh, right. Actually, I came here to ask a favor, if you don't mind."

"Not at all! If it is within my power to do so, I am willing to assist Galadriel's champion in any way I can. What is it you require?"

"Well, Captain Laurentius has decided he wants me to put together an honor guard after the incident with the farm, so I've been looking for recruits. I asked Galmar, and he said you might be interested."

"Why of course! To serve and protect Galadriel and her champion would be the highest of honors for one of my order. I gladly accept, if you'll have me."

'I really wish he would tone it down a little.' Galadriel complains sheepishly. You hold back a chuckle.

"Alright then, thank you Ganelon. I'll speak with the Captain sometime within the next few days, then I'll get back to you."

"I look forward to it, Siegfried. Do not hesitate to call upon me if need be, I may usually be found here from morning until I lock the chapel at night."

With that, you part ways. You were expecting a priest, but you weren't exactly expecting someone as...zealous, you guess would be the term. Still, he seemed like a good man, and you definitely know you can trust him after all that. Plus, if that handshake was anything to go on, he's pretty damn strong as well, and probably knows a thing or two about magic if he's a priest.

"Well, I'm glad you were able to find someone else to join you." Logain says upon exiting the chapel. "Now, Galmar and I should get going. Until next time Siegfried, stay safe!"

Well, now you've found two people to join your honor guard. Two more to go at least. You could probably look for more leads tomorrow if you wanted, or you could settle for what you have now and decide on who amongst your friends you want to join the honor guard. Either way, you've got plenty of time.

You're not so sure about recruiting her for the honor guard, but it couldn't hurt to at least talk to Anna. You do a little bit of searching, and eventually find yourself at the door to Anna's room. You're about to knock on the door when it opens inward, and Anna nearly walks into you.

"Oh, Siegfried? What are you doing here?" She asks. You notice she's carrying a bag on her back, as though she's going somewhere.

"Nothing really, just stopped by to say hello. We haven't really spoken at all since the Knight-Captain had us all gathered in his office." You point to the heavy bag on her back. "Am I interrupting something though? You look like you're about to head somewhere."

"Actually, your timing is good if you wanted to talk. I was actually about to leave for home."

Leaving already? Well, thinking about it logically that does make sense. Her village is only a few hours away by horse, so there wouldn't really be any reason for her to stick around too long.

"Anyways, what is it you wanted to say to me?"

>"You fought well back at the farm when we were escaping. Have you thought about joining the Crusaders?"
>"Well, I was going to ask what your plans were now that you're free, but I guess I already know now. Mind if I go with you? The captain might want someone from the tower to report in with your mom, since she asked us for help."

It'd be a good idea to touch base with her mom in any case.

"Just wanted to see how you were doing. I doubt living in the farm for two months was easy, will you be alright?"

Her eyes look down. "Yeah...It wasn't easy in there, but I'm free now, so everything can go back to normal again."

"I see. I take it you're hanging up the greatsword then?"

The greatsword in question is currently secured to the side of her bag. She tightens her grip on the straps of her backpack.

"No, not completely at least. After the farm, I don't think I ever want to fight again. I spent two months in there, fearing for my life and clinging to this hunk of metal because my life depended on it. If I had it my way, I'd never even pick up another sword again."

"Then why are you still holding onto it?"

"Because I still live near the border. As much as I hate having to keep this thing, it's me best hope of escaping if something happens and another demon tries to snatch me away again. I think I'll talk to my mom about moving, but at the same time I don't want to leave Llynn. It's...home, you know? I can't explain it, but I don't like the idea of leaving it, but staying there means there's always that risk. That's why I'll hold onto this hunk of metal for now, and the moment I don't need it anymore, I plan to throw it away and never pick up another again."

The farm must have been really hard on her. You're not surprised, it's a lot for a 17 year old kid to deal with.

"I'm sure everything will be fine now. You're mom will be happy to see you, and so long as you don't wander off you should be safe. I don't think the Scavengers will attack a whole town."

She relaxes, just a little. "Yeah, you're probably right. Still, I'm glad you people are here. It's a load off my mind knowing there's a who tower of people dedicated to fighting those things close by."
>>
>>39213079
You grin. "That's right, you've got nothing to fear with us around. We're here to keep you people safe, don't worry."

She smiles. "Right, thanks. Well, I should probably get going, the people with the horses are probably wondering where I am right now. Glad I could talk to you before I left Siegfried, don't be afraid to stop by and visit some time, I'm sure mom will want to meet you one day." She starts to walk off towards the stairs, but stops herself halfway and turns back to you. "Oh yeah, Siegfried?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks. I would have never made it out of there without you. Stay safe."

With that, she heads down the stairs and out of sight. You suppose that cuts any chances of recruiting her, but you suppose it's for the best. She's still a kid, after all, she needs time to recover with her family.

The hallways begin to fill with people, meaning it's almost time for lunch. You make your way down the stairs towards the dining hall, you'll figure out what to do now after you eat.

Well we can spare a visit later on.
>>
So wat do next thread? Are we gonna learn enchanting, finish those books and recruit THEGUYWHOWEFORGOTHATHEEXISTES , Justine, Erika and Joan?
>>
>>39213421
>Are we gonna learn enchanting
we definitely don't have time to learn, but we can look for someone who is already experienced at it.

The Order of the Righteous Blade seems to be the best bet for finding a champion, although we'll more likely have to teach that person how to not die first.

Books actually aren't TOO important: we more or less know Galadriel's standing and the demons as a whole, so all that's left is:
>Specifics of Galadriel's domain(Righteousness)
>Going through the beastiary of demons

And I know this is a little out there, but I was thinking that, as the son of the blacksmith, we could be searching for ways to replicate the blade? I mean, don't start sticking angels into stuff, but the magical golden indestructible anti-demon thing would be a pretty substantial upgrade for the Watchtowers.
>>
>>39212383
Gallie is so adorable when she's embarassed. We should ask her how about this guy for a champion though.
>>
>>39213955
So we have elfgolas and the fanboy, other two could be Erika who seemed eager for the job and maybe Justine and/or Roland?
Joan's good, but I'd let the nerds - her and Daniel - stick to the books.
>>
>>39215620
I'm all for Joan.

I'm on the fence for Erika and Justine.

Erika could potentially take our place as "jackass with the sword": as soon as she's ignored in favor of dealing with us, she sticks a sword in their head.

Justine on the other hand would be much better at keeping herself alive if the enemy knows to target her.

We could also bring neither of them, because friends and frontlines don't mix.
>>
>>39215704
I get the feeling that unless the other guards turns out to be robots or assholes, we're gonna end up with friends regardless. In fact I bet we could befriend a robot as well.
>>
>>39215731
yeah, you're probably right.

Still, I prefer not to bring them in so that in their free time, we effective have an extra 3-4 people to work with. Even though in terms of meta, it's easy enough for Sparks to make events happen when they're busy.
>>
>>39215749

Also depends on how many people the captain wants to be able to pull.

Guard might have say 6 people, but they can alternate shifts, always having 2 available.
>>
>>39215620
>>39215704

I think Erika's protective nature towards us would help us from not doing so much stupid stuff in the future, and we could help her the same way.

Also, we should ask Galadriel if she has any powers that can boost ouf friends capabilities.
>>
>>39217679

"They seem pretty sure to me. As for why, I suppose some of them are hoping they can prevent others from being snatched away like they were. Others, honestly, I think decided to join because of you."

"Me?"

"Oh don't act surprised, after that stunt with the Behemoth, I'm surprised they haven't started calling you a saint yet. Some of them weren't even sure you could kill a demon, now not only do they know that's not true, but they saw you tackle the biggest damn monster any of them's ever seen. I don't know what relic that captain of yours gave you, but it obviously packs a punch whatever it is."

"Well, I can understand their decision in the matter, but I personally don't plan on ever facing one of those nasty creatures again in my life." The alchemist comments. That reminds you, you've never actually asked for his name.

"I take it you're going your own way then, uh...?"

"Damien." The alchemist responds. "An yes, after we're let go, I plan on starting a new shop in whatever town they put me in."

"That reminds me, damn good job back their with the explosive charge. How'd you even get the parts to build an explosive that big in the farm?"

"You'd be surprised what a little imagination and few spells can accomplish if you know what you're doing. That, and a little desperation never hurt. But thank you, Siegfried, I'm glad my crafts were able to help us all escape that Aureus-forsaken farm."

>They might be better suited at the other Watchtowers or the Righteous Blade.
The Righteous Blade is a militant church order, so it probably wouldn't be as easy to join as the watchtowers, who need all the help they can get. As for the other watchtowers, most people just enlist with the one found in their home kingdom, unless for some reason they'd prefer a different one. Roland mentioned he came to the White Watchtower instead of the Red Watchtower because he felt the Red Watchtower wasn't as active as he'd like, and Ganelon came here instead of the Grey Watchtower because his church wanted to expand to Iseria.

"Know him? I used to be his apprentice once upon a time. Left to strike out on my own after I finished my apprenticeship with him. I had no idea he'd moved to Morsland, though I suppose I've been a tad out of touch, for obvious reasons."

Huh, small world. Around this time, you notice that people are starting to shuffle out of the dining hall.

"Alright, well thanks Damien, I'll stop by to visit if the Knight-Captain lets me leave to visit Morsland some time."

"It's no trouble, don't worry. If you ever do stop by, I'll be sure to have some tea ready."

With that said and done, you say goodbye to the survivors and leave, but not before shaking a few hands. You've recruited two people for your honor guard and looked into all the leads you had, so now you can either find something else to do or see if you can find more leads.

You decide to head to the knight-captain's office and speak with him about the honor guard. He might have some suggestions, and you might want to ask him about Galmar and Logain as well.

You find his office and knock on the door. "Come in." You hear him say, so you let yourself in. The knight-captain is currently signing a large stack of paperwork, which he continues to work on even after you've entered.

"Ah, Siegfried. Is there something you need?"

"Actually, I came here to ask you a few things about the honor guard, like if you have any suggestions on who to ask."

"Suggestions? Hm...You might try asking Nerillian or Ganelon, both of them have proven their strength in the past."

"Actually, sir, I already spoke with both of them."

"Oh, did you now? Well in that case, I would suggest choosing people you already know, such as Erika or Justine. After all, the reason I'm letting you choose your honor guard's members is so that they are all people you can trust."

"About that. I'm considering some of them, but I really don't like the idea of hiding behind my friends. I mean, considering what's happened thus far, it's possible something might happen again and one of them could get hurt."

"There's a risk that -anyone- who serves on your honor guard could be hurt, Siegfried. Everyone here at the tower is ready and prepared to take that risk though, and more than capable of taking care of themselves. You may not like the idea, but there is wisdom in surrounding yourself with people you know and trust."

You think back to Erika and the others, how easily they agreed when you brought up the honor guard. Maybe he's got a point, but you're still not entirely sure.
>>
>>39226458
"I'll think about it sir. There were two other people I wanted to ask you about though."

"Two others? Who?"

"Galmar and Logain, sir. I served in the same squad as them before I was taken to the farm, and Erika recommended them herself. I already asked them and they both seemed fine with it, but they said I should ask you first since they have important jobs to do."

"Hm...Well, I can't spare both of them as that would leave their squad completely void of experienced officers, but I can assign one of them to your squad if you would like."

So you can't recruit both of them, but you can recruit one of them. In that case, you'll go with-

>Galmar. He's big, he's heavily armored, and he must be experienced to have made it all the way to lieutenant.
>Logain. He can provide arcane support, and as a sergent you're sure he has good leadership skills.

"I see. If that is your decision, then so be it. Was there anything else you needed from me?"

You shake your head. "No sir."

"Very well then. Remember, I need you to have an idea who you want on the honor guard by the day after tomorrow. You may want to consider what I said about recruiting your friends as well."

You tell him you will, and exit his office. Well, now what should you do?

So right now for Honor Guard I'm thinking something like
>Tank- Ganelon
>Vanguard- Erica and Justine
>Ranged/Scouting- Nerillian
>Support- Daniel and Joan
granted we're still looking for candidates and still have room for 4 people give or take. Maybe another heavy hitter to switch with Ganelon on Tank and Keep Sig Alive duty, also keep an eye out for anyone with shield experience for rear guard and perhaps a Rogue to even things out skill wise. Also Sparks, what range of spells do Daniel and Joan have? Daniel seems like pure support/healer and hopefully Joan is more Mage

Well, you don't have any other leads, so you decide to just wander around for now. Who knows, maybe you'll find a new lead.

To that extent, you wander around the training yard and it's adjacent areas. At first, you get the idea to stay and watch the others practice, see if anyone stood out in particular. No one really stands out too much though, not like Justine or Nerillian, so you move on, wandering down another corridor.

About halfway down the new corridor from the training yard, you think you hear something. You stop and listen, there it is again. The sound of metal hitting metal. This is different from the sound of clashing practice weapons you'd hear at the practice yard though, this is more rhythmic. Curious, you follow the sound further down the hallway and to the left, until you find yourself in front of a reinforced metal door. Now that you're closer to the source, you recognize the sound you heard as the sound of a hammer striking iron, a sound you're very familiar with. You push the iron doors open and step inside.

Inside, you see a grey haired man hammering at an anvil. When he sees you enter, the smith pulls the strip of metal he was shaping away from the anvil and mutters something you don't quite catch. The iron begins to glow with a dull blue light, and then the smith drops it into a bucket of water. Curiously, the hot metal does not hiss at the sudden cooling.

"Don't think I've seen you around here before. The name's Festus, I'm the tower blacksmith. Something you need, or can I get back to work?"

>"The tower has a blacksmith?"
>"No, I was just exploring the tower. What was that you did with the iron you were shaping, why did it start glowing?"

You've practiced with Daniel enough to know most of his spells are either buffs or debuffs. Joan you've never really stopped and asked, but from what you saw during the fight with the Scavengers at the border, she seems to use more offensive spells.

"No, I was just exploring the tower." You explain, before pointing to the iron sitting in the water bucket. "You know you shouldn't just drop hot iron into the water so suddenly though, right? It weakens the iron."

Festus the blacksmith harrumphs. "Of course I know that, what do you take me for? That's why I started saturating the iron before I dropped it in there."

Saturating? You spent a good chunk of your life learning the smithing trade from your father, and you've never heard that term used before. "Saturating? Does that have something to do with why the iron started glowing?"

"Don't know about enchanting, eh?" He says, before turning around and pulling the still-glowing iron from the bucket and holding it for you to see. Stranger than the dull blue right surrounding it is the fact it's still glowing red-hot at the tip where he held it in the forge. He must notice your confusion, because he goes on to explain. "When you start enchanting a blade, you've gotta heat it up first, let the iron soften up a bit, then you let the aether saturate into it over time. I put it in the waterbucket so it can cool down a little over time as the aether around it starts to thin out and let the water cool the blade."

Is that how it works? You've learned a lot from Daniel about magic since coming here, and you knew a lot about smithing before you even thought about coming to the watchtower, but what he's telling you is completely new to you.

>"What happens after you saturate it then?"
>"So you were enchanting the blade then? Do you enchant armor or shields too?"
>"I see. Well, I'll get out of your way then."

"What happens after you saturate it then?"

"After that? Then you bind with whatever spell you're enchanting it with and wait for them to harmonize. Assuming you've done it right, it should be done after a few days. If not, it'll just drain all the saturated aether out and you'll have to start from scratch."

"Do you do the same for armor and shields then?"

"Pretty much, though the process for armor usually takes longer. Why do you ask?"

"Just curious, I know a thing or two about smithing myself, but I've never seen something be enchanted before." Just as you say that, an idea occurs to you. "Say, you said you're the tower's blacksmith right? Do you enchant armor and shields too? Because I actually have a shield I'd like to get enchanted if possible."

Festus scratches his beard. "Hmm. Afraid I'm a little too bogged down right now to take any personal requests. Although if you want, I could teach you how to do it yourself."

That's something you weren't expecting. "You'd do that? Why?"

He points to Galadriel. "That's why. I've never met you before, but I recognize that blade anywhere. You're the new champion everyone's been talking about, aren't you?"

You nod. "Yeah, that would be me."

"I figured. Daniel mentioned the new champion was interested in learning how to enchant things, actually asked me if I could teach you once I finished this batch of new gear for the armory. Instead, seems you found me."

True, you had asked Daniel before about enchanting. You didn't know he was looking for someone to teach you though.

"I'm going to be busy all day finishing this batch of equipment, but if you come back tomorrow I should be able to teach you. Then you can try and enchant whatever it is you need enchanted yourself. Sound good."

>"Sounds good. Thank you sir."

"Just fine. I've been meditating for the most part since I got back from patrol." Daniel says.

"My patrol ran into an owlbear while we were stopped and resting, but other than that everything's been buisness as usual. What about you Siegfried?" Roland asks.

"A lot has happened. I talked to Nerillian like Justine said to, then I spoke to Galmar and Logain like you said I should Erika. They couldn't join, but they introduced me to another guy named Ganelon who can."

"Ganelon you say? The one from the Order of the Righteous Sword? I've attended his sermons a few times, he seems like a good man."

When you finish loading your plate, you look over and see Ganelon still eating by himself. Setting your plate down, you walk over to his table.

"Hey, how's it going?"

Ganelon does not seem to notice your approach until you speak. "Ah, Siegfried. What brings you to my table?"

"Actually, I was wondering if you'd like to join my friends and I at the table over there, since you're sitting by yourself."

"A most generous offer. Normally I sit by myself because I finish my meals quickly to return to my duties sooner, but it should be fine to take my time just this once."

You lead him over to the table where you and the others are sitting. He introduces himself, and goes back to eating. Curiously, you notice he doesn't remove his helmet while he's eating. Instead, the sides of his helm have these weird flaps that come apart and allow him to eat.

"Not gonna take your helmet off?" You ask him.

"It is an old tradition of my order that we do not remove our armor unless completely necessary. That way, we are always ready to fight should we need to."

"Doesn't that get uncomfortable though?" You ask. Wait a minute, you feel like you've had this conversation before with someone...

"Not at all. My armor is specially made to be comfortable to wear. I can even sleep in it."

Wait, he sleeps in his armor? How in the Voi-You know what, you're just not going to question it. If it works for him, then whatever. At least now you know he'll always be ready for a fight when he joins your honor guard.
