"Hello, you've reached the voicemail of Itsukuma Izumi, I'm not-"

Beep.

This is the third time, and she's still not picking up her phone.
I'm getting worried.

I am Masami Itsukuma, and I've had a rough day. Lots of stuff happened, none of it pleasant.
Monsters are attacking Fortune HQ, and I don't want to help them. It's just if I don't, those monsters might decide that Fortune isn't a very appealing target to them and decide to attack elsewhere. Deep down, I think all of this is Fortune's doing anyway. I just can't figure out as to why.

It doesn't matter now, Kaori holds a small wooden box in her hand that can take control of the monsters and cause them to stop attacking. We're just about to go to Fortune HQ to use it, but-

"THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT EMILLION!"
A little girl in a quickly-scrapped-together blue dress sits crying amongst the living room of the mansion. Several minutes ago, she was a towering hulk of a monstrosity seemingly made of metal. Now she's been reduced to a little girl with teary eyes and reddened cheeks.

"I didn't do anything! If anything this has to be Priestess' fault!"
Next to her, grappling with her arm, is a little boy in some ill-fitting clothes. He too was once a bulky armor-clad beast.

And I have no idea what happened to them or why they turned into people. Today has been a strange day of terrifying monsters becoming cute kids.
I'm not complaining, though. That part isn't what's worrying me.

Masami sure got over losing one of her transformtion cards rather quickly, or did she have some sort of resolution that we didn't get to see cause we were playing Emillion?
>>
>>39283722
Neither, she wanted to call Mom and ask about it disappearing.

Mom's not picking up.
She's not picking up the phone.

Haruka is missing, and Mom isn't picking up the phone.
Oh no.
"K-Kaori." My voice is weak, and trembling. "C-can you dial Mom and see if she picks up the phone?"
"Hmm?" Kaori stops doting over the blonde-haired little girl that's crying her eyes out. "Uh, sure."

She takes out her phone and taps it several times. Several seconds of waiting pass until she clicks her teeth.
"She's probably still asleep."
"A-are you sure?"
"Masami, don't do this now. We're so close to fixing all this, please don't break down now."

"I-I'm not breaking down!" I shiver.
Kaori sighs as she stops patting the head of the little blonde monster. She stands up and walks over to me, "You don't need to be worried at a time like this. We'll go home, find Mom in bed, and everything will be just fine. Let's check the kids before we leave."

I nod as she leads me over to them. They're still crying about their predicament as everyone else tries to placate them.

"GO AWAY I DON'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU AS MUCH AS ANYONE." The little girl tries pushing away Emillion.
"I'm telling you it's not my fault!" He tries grabbing her arm, which is quickly slapped away.

"Will you two calm down!?" Kaori tries acting like the big sister again. "This isn't either of your faults!"
"SOMEONE CAUSED THIS!"
"..I think it's Priestess' fault."

He thinks I did this?
Aiko grabs her shoulder. "Listen, it's not safe to stay here, so why don't you come with us while Kaori and Masami fix everything?"
"I DON'T WANNA LEAVE" The little girl starts crying again.
Emillion crosses his arms and pouts, "I think we should! I tried fighting something and it was really hard, if another drone comes by then we're in trouble!"
"NO I DON'T WANNA"

>Enough of this. Time to go to Fortune

"Mom.."
I can't stop thinking about her, there have been too many coincidences today.

The school, the monsters, Fortune, the fact that they're attacking there of all places, the fact that some of them are turning into humans, the fact that the JESTER of all monsters attacked me outside this very mansion, Haruko disappearing.
Haruko disappearing..
"I think I need to check on Mom."
"Eh? Masami? Are you sure?" Kaori seems increasingly worried.

"Yes." I can feel the pressure that has been building up in my forehead start to throb again. "I'm sure. I need to be certain before I rush into Fortune."

Kaori takes out her phone and checks the messages. "Masami, The principal already went to Fortune with the others. I'll ride with Aiko and go there with the box. I'll be able to quell them myself if Aimi is helping me."

I look up at her, I can't believe she's volunteering to take this on herself.
"Eh? You sure?"
"I'm certain Masami." Kaori wraps her arms around me, "Go make sure Mom is safe, for me."

I feel SO HAPPY. I can still feel the intense worry from Haruko disappearing, but if I can at least make sure Mom is safe, that will be a huge burden off my mind.
"T-Thank you so much Sis!"
"It's fine, Masami. Go on, we have to get these kids out of here."

I sprint toward the door while Aimi, Aiko's mother, picks up the still-crying girl. Aiko tries picking up Emillion, but is pushed away with a pout.

--

I forgot just how far away the mansion was from home. It's not an incredible leap, but Kaori should be pulling up to Fortune HQ at this point.
I want to be there to help her! I don't want to spend the whole time back at home because I got worried!

Maybe she was right, maybe I was just worried over nothing.

I land in the driveway and hop toward the front door.
Except the front door is laying in the driveway.

"MOOOM!"
I sprint toward the house, hopping over the discarded front door. I can feel tears welling at the edges of my eyes as I hop up and over the windowsill.

Thankfully, the window seems to have already been busted out. I fly through the curtains and land in the living room, ready to fight.

The house is in shambles. Our dining room table is flipped over, with all the breakfast plates scattered around the floor. Glass and fine china shattered and turned about throughout the room.
Every chair is flipped over on its side, one is even broken!

The door to Mom's room has been torn off, inside there is no one. I back out into the living room to search one more time.

But again, I see nothing. There's no one here.

"Mom."
I stop, feeling my heartbeat rising. My ears feel like they're on fire, but not as on fire as my stomach.
My entire body feels like it's going to explode.

"MOOOOOOOM!"
I can't feel anything anymore. Just the floor beneath my knees, and the sobbing in my ears.
"Mom.."

She's gone. Haruko is gone.
Everyone who was my strength has left.
When I need it the most, I'm all alone.

"Ahem."
Even my ears ring with the sound of someone else. I know it's a lie, because I've searched the whole house and found no one.
"AHEM!"
I hear it again, it's likely me coughing and gagging over my tears.

"Masami! Look up!"
I blink, open my eyes and look toward the ceiling.
Sure enough, there's a spear protruding from it. And impaled on that spear, is the nice monster that has always helped out.

Or so I thought, right now he's stuck in the ceiling. His two hands grip onto the spear that goes straight through him as he struggles to pull it out.
"I could use some help!"

This thing.
It's really stuck, even with Belle I'm having problems getting it to budge.
When it feels like the whole house is about to snap into two, it finally dislodges from SOMEWHERE and falls onto the floor with a mighty clang.

The monster removes it from his torso and stands up, dusting himself off as if nothing had ever happened.
"Thank you Masami." He sighs.

He's it, he's the only one left.
I wrap my arms around him and lean my head against his chest. The meager barrier I set up against the tears breaks.
"I understand you're upset, but we need to-"
"Just... give me a moment." I hug against his extremely tough exterior, "I know Fortune did this, I know we have to go after Mom. But- I just need this moment."

We stand in the center of the room for what feels like forever, I let go of him and ask the big question.
"What happened?!"
"Fortune, Masami." He dusts himself off, "They knew I had left with Empress and followed us back here. Asai sent one of his lieutenants, even."
Huh, just like earlier with Aiko's mother.

He flips up one of the chairs that had been toppled over and sits down in one. I lean against him and continue to cry.
"T-thank you." I sob, "I don't know why you decided to help us all this time, or why you're still with us, but thank you."

He puts his hand on my head and pats as gently as he can manage.
"Empress is the closest thing that I have to a big sister." He sighs. "I'm grateful that the found the happy family she was always looking for."
"Why do you feel that way about her?"

Gently, he pushes me off of him as he stands up and makes his way toward the door.
"She has always been the only person I've known who treated everyone with love and respect."
Is that a sense of sadness in his voice? I didn't know monsters got sad.

"We need to leave soon, Masami. I'm not feeling well from the stab, and am not sure how much longer I can fight."
"R-right."

We walk out onto the front lawn, and I ready my flight card.
I want to feel anger; I want to feel the fury and rage that I felt when I even SUSPECTED that Fortune had taken Mom somewhere.

I still remember that feeling, it felt like a bomb had just gone off inside of my heart. Every bit of my rage and anger had one very precise target. I had a purpose, I had a sense of justice in my heart.
Now, I don't feel anything. I know Mom is gone, I know Haruko is missing, and I know many people are in danger.
But I just feel a strange numbness inside all the same.

"Masami? Are you okay? If you would like, I will go ahead if you wish to rest."
"No!" I reply almost immediately. "If anything, you're the one that needs to rest!"
"You know I won't do that."
"Then you know I won't, either!"

My phone is ringing.
"Masami!" It's Kaori. "Don't come to Fortune!"

Wait, what?!
"Kaori! What happened?"
"We used the box, then the fighting stopped, but!" She pauses for a moment, there's lots of chatter in the background.

Then, wish a whisper, "-but then a huge bubble formed around Fortune. I think. It's something transparent, but completely solid! Just stay there with Mom and we'll figure out a way out."
"A way-"

Does that mean.
"You're STUCK INSIDE THE BUBBLE?"
"N-no! No! No! Stuck is the wrong word!"

There's a pause.
"W-we just can't see a way out right now. We'll figure it out! Just keep yourself safe, okay?"

Oh no. No no no, that will never stand.
"Masami, I know what that silence means, promise me you won-"
I cut her off and turn off the phone.

"We're going right now!" I yell at the monster.
"What was that about?"
"Not important! All that matters is that you get me inside!"
There's that feeling again. In a way I've missed it.

We both land roughly a block away from Fortune HQ.
I can't see any kind of bubble surrounding it.

"Are you sure Kaori was correct?" The monster asks, walking forward on the sidewalk.
"If she said it, I believe her."

He searches around, not seeing any kind of bubble or barrier.
I can't stand around waiting for this! I take off running toward Fortune HQ.
"Masami, wait."

I don't listen.
With a whump, I run into a layer of film floating in the air.
"Ow."

That's when I see it, the shimmering image of a dome that only lightly traces itself through the sky. The place I'm pressing against it glows with a light rainbow.

"I found it."
"I can see that, Masami."

"What do we do now?"
"Well. We could go underground through the drainage system once more, it may not extend underground. Failing that, we could check on top of it to see if there's a break. Or if you have another idea."

"You got me in last time with no problems." I think about my options for a minute. "I think I'll go with your plan and try underground again."

"The way we got in the last time is blocked, but there's nothing stopping us from starting a little further back and working our way there."
He hobbles toward an inconspicuous looking building while clutching his side. I would have figured that he would have healed by now or something.

"Are you sure you're going to be okay?"
"I'll... be fine. I'm just not feeling very well."

Well he has a good reason to!

--

The drainage system is as dank as I remember it.
It smells bad, it's poorly lit.
Worse of all, half of it is through ankle-deep water. Awful!

Fortunately, it seems to go straight under the bubble surrounding Fortune.
But unfortunately, it seems my monster companion is slowing down the more he walks.

"I don't think you're okay."
"I'll be fine." He approaches a ladder and starts to climb it.

Very.
Slowly.

We push open the manhole and climb out of it. We're in the center of the parking lot.
Near the edge, I can see Kaori and everyone trying to break out of the bubble. Each one trying something different in order to even dent it.

The front of the principal's car is ruined, too. Did he seriously try ramming it?

"Let's go.." The monster says, still clutching his midsection. "I found a backway in the other day, we won't have to go through the drainage system."

"We?"
"Yes, You and I, we need to get inside as soon as possible before they're made aware of-"

"We aren't going anywhere! I'm going in, and you're going with them outside!"

He stops, and almost look genuinely hurt.
"What is this about, Masami?"
"You're hurt! And you're getting worse!"

"I am not getting anything! Empress is inside this building!"
" And I'm not letting you go in! You're not worth getting hurt over this!"

"Of course I am!" He stands up straight, "I've made it my purpose to protect Empress!."
I can't tell if he's serious or not.

"LISTEN HERE, YOU!" Me raising my voice at him has attracted the attention of Kaori, who storms over toward me. "YOU DON'T GET TO SAY THINGS LIKE THAT WHEN YOU SAID MOM WAS LIKE A BIG SISTER TO YOU!"
"Of course I get to!"

"No you don't!" I grab him and try to pull him down to my level, "Because Mom cares about you just as much as you care about her! She doesn't want to see you hurt, either!"

He stops just as Kaori makes it over to me. She grabs me and throttles me a couple times.
"You're not leading very well by example!" Kaori pouts, "I told you to stay at home with Mom!"
"Mom isn't there, Kaori!"

Kaori's eyes widen.
"W-what?"
"She's not there! She's in here!" I point toward the building. Inside I can hear some commotion.

"And you!" I point toward the monster. "Kaori is staying here to help, so you're going back and helping everyone out!"

He grumbles something, "Fine. As you wish Priestess. I have faith in you finding Izumi."
"Good!"

I'm glad someone does, because I'm a little nervous right now!
Why is my phone ringing? Kaori is right here!

"Who is this!?"
Maybe that's a little hostile, but I'm not in the mood for talking!

Yes, perfect.
