Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you cashed a few checks, bought a guar, and set out for Khmedi.

It is currently the 8th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

Taking the guar by the reins you guide her through the stables, pausing by the fence to haul one of the heavy leather saddles off the post and sling it over the guar's back. The design on the saddle is different than what you're used to, it has some sort of harness like construction which seems to strap around the guar's rear legs, but eventually you figure out and haul yourself onto the animal's back.

Kicking your heels into your mount's flanks, you set off at a decent clip. Navigating the city streets is a challenge but you manage it well enough and you don't have to go far before you reach the main gates. From there it's simply a straight shot across the bridge which connects Anthus to the mainland. There are a few scattered buildings on the other side of the bridge but for the most part the land is given over to wilderness, the grass of the plains reaching up nearly to your shoulders in some places even atop the guar.

You're several hours into your journey when a voice intrudes upon your thoughts. It's Darzi. {Mik, how are you enjoying your travels?}

You pull back on the reins, easing your guar into an easy trot. {I've enjoyed them well enough, I suppose. They've proved quite profitable so far.} You try not to recall the night you spent with Annette, but feel your stomach turn anyway. You can't believe yourself, succumbing to such degeneracy! Even if it was fun... {How are things at the estate? I assume you're contacting me to report something or other.}

There is a brief delay before she responds, her tone mildly concerned. {Profectus left a few days ago, he said he was going to find Tertia in the mountains and convince her to live on your estate. I worry about him, sometimes. I think he might be disappointed to find that she simply wasn't as enamored with him as he'd thought. Anyway, he hasn't gotten back yet but he told me via the brooches that he thinks he's figured out where she's living.}

{Other than that, there's nothing much to report. Zahak has been acting up since you've left. He keeps demanding goats or trying to wrestle with the slaves. I don't think he means any harm by it but there are seldom few things in this world more terrifying than a dragon hurtling towards you with its jaws unhinged, screaming into your mind about how he's going to beat you up. He never hurts any of them, but I've noticed they tend to avoid cleaning your room these days.}

There's a pause before she resumes speaking. {I suppose we've had more visitors than usual as well. Karim visits most days to help around the estate. He and Mortia seem to spend a lot of time together, for lessons I presume. That friend of yours, Vasuda, she's been visiting as well. I've been teaching her the basics of Marsala Ve but she seems to be struggling. Chryssa has been more reclusive these past few days, but I doubt it's anything important. She does have her moods. Yesterday she was helping me teach Vasuda how to fight, and she played with Zahak until he tired himself out, but I haven't seen her at all today.}

Seemingly deeming that enough news from home, Darzi changes the subject. {I take it there haven't been any problems abroad?}

Speaking of the dragon, I hope we run into it on our journey again so we can attempt to communicate with it one more time. See if we can't become acquaintances, maybe try communicating via images and emotions. Or it might just kills us, only one way to find out.

Shirou level density would be funny, especially since she was so proud after managing to convince Mik to agree to her deal with her "feminine wiles".

>Mik agrees to deal

Turns out not only engaging in seduction, but also recognizing seduction is not something she's ANY good at.

You think on the events you've experienced thus far in your journey, and the only thing truly worrisome that springs to mind is that encounter you had with a dragon upon first arriving in Anthus. {When the ship I served on to get to Anthus was pulling into port I noticed that a dragon was circling the city. I don't know if anyone noticed it, if one was unfamiliar with dragons I'm sure it would've merely looked like a particularly large bird at the height it was flying.}

{It dived towards the ship I was on, as if to attack, but I managed to communicate with it. The fact I was capable of speaking in the same manner as the dragon seemed to confuse it to such a degree that it simply flew off rather than attack us. Still, it's concerning that dragons have ventured so far north and at least this one seemed perfectly willing to attack us while we were within the walls of a city. I worry they may be preparing to make their existence known.}

There is concern evident in Darzi's thoughts when she responds. {You're right, that is cause for worry. Do you think we ought to inform someone of their existence, so the city can prepare? Perhaps we could tell your father? He should be able to spread the information amongst the higher echelons of nobility without causing some sort of public panic. Obviously we wouldn't mention Zahak.}

not sure that would be wise, because we will probably end up fighting dragon and he need to be able to pull his weight.

What should be the priority would be to find a way to make him actually speak. something that don't speak is a beast, something that speak is a person.

we can probably find a way to create auditory illusion, perhaps by vibrating an object with manipulate.

telepathy is weird and alien, speaking is familiar to everyone.

I mean what do you prefer, sudenly a dragon start speaking to you in your mind, you don't know what they can read, you don't know if you can lie to them, you don't know if they're telling something completely different to the person beside you or if they can manipulate your mind.

While informing your father probably isn't a bad idea, it runs too great a risk of exposing Zahak to the public. {I'll inform my Master and he can spread the word to the other Vatis in the city. If I recall correctly they've formed some sort of social group which meets fairly regularly. I'd more quickly place my trust in them to defend the city from dragons soaring over the walls than the Shah and his army.}

When Darzi responds her thoughts seem less concerned, though you can tell there is some lingering doubt. {Very well, Mikhael. I'll trust your judgment, for now.}

For now? What's that supposed to mean? Your judgment is flawless. {Glad to hear it, I suppose. If you'll excuse me, I need to nag my Master about spending more time with Zahak.}

The connection is severed, and you reach out via the brooches for your Master. You feel a connection form, and push your thoughts through. {Master, I have bad news. While coming into port in the city of Anthus my ship was very nearly attacked by a dragon. I managed to communicate with it, which seemed to confuse it enough that it simply left us alone, but it's worrying that a dragon seemed perfectly willing to attack us within the walls of a populated city. I think they might be preparing to make their presence known to the world.}

Your Master's response is prompt, his tone serious. {What would you propose I do? An expedition into the mountains to hunt them down would prove too costly, and besides that I doubt it would even prove effective.}

(1/2)
>>
You shrug, though you realize it's a useless gesture. {It's fortunate that I wasn't going to propose an expedition into the mountains, then. I merely ask that you inform the other powerful Vatis in the city of the presence of dragons and begin formulating some sort of plan for the defense of the city. Perhaps subtly propose that the Shah place some ballistas atop his new walls, or scattered throughout the city. Reinforce important buildings as you see fit. I don't know, just anything that you think may help if they attempt to raze the city.}

There is a pause before your master responds. {I think I've an idea of what we can do. Thank you, Mikhael. I'll inform the others.} There is a certain sense of finality to his thoughts. It sets you ill at ease for some reason. {Was there anything else?}

While it's hardly important compared to the possibility of dragons invading the city, there was something else you wanted to discuss. {A few things. First, I've heard that you're not following through on your promise to teach Zahak magic. By the time I get back I expect him to at least be competent with water magic! He's a quick learner, honestly. A natural talent. How are things going with Mortia?}

A hint of weariness taints your Master's thoughts. {Your human friend is as dense as she is studious. I don't know if she's ignoring my advances on purpose or if she's genuinely oblivious to the world outside of magical pursuits. Regardless, I've managed to reteach her Nature magic such that I feel confident calling her a true Grandmistress. We've been working on Water magic and Fire magic recently. I may as well involve Zahak, since it doesn't seem as though I'll manage to get her into bed.}

That got me thinking anon.

In the scorched spell devastated ruins of ancient Hiacia, amidst the beasts and fallen grandeur, there's likely a great many cornerstones and bricks that persist to this day with resist enchantments upon them. And it's likely those would be the best and only parts of the buildings to survive the ravages of time.

I for one agree with him. As long as we keep the specifics to our inner circle for as long as possible it will be a golden age for us.
>>
>>39344838
Or you know the ruin of us.
If you like we could have Master try and make a pact with the cat spirit. TO earn the right to enchant shit under the protection of that sect.

That would by us some time as most weaker void entities and spirits wouldn't go out of their way to destroy our city.
But other powerful sects and possibly higher ranked spirits may. Since you know it is a decree by one of the gods that mortals should not know the language of the gods.
>>
>>39344991
>Since you know it is a decree by one of the gods that mortals should not know the language of the gods.
It's not one of them. The reason they banned mortal from it is because mortals used it as a weapon against the gods.
>>
>>39345060
>It's not one of them. The reason they banned mortal from it is because mortals used it as a weapon against the gods.
WTF
anon.
Anyway.
My point still stands, that mortals should not have their hands on the language of gods.
To be able to enchant items is punishable by death/ruin. Even the lowest of the higher beings seem to know this.
Therefore mass enchanting = huge amount of unwanted attention. After a child was recently in the area.
Not even a bitch child. But a child that has "constant" talks with the gods.
"constant" could be anywhere from every hour to every 100,000 years" Since time is likely a fickle thing to true immortals.
>>
>>39345060
I figured it was a combination of things they saw as infractions, namely the Hiacian cult attempting to revive Prthvi and the Rhynians messing with the void extensively.
None of the legends we know indicate either civilization attempted to use enchanting as a weapon against the gods. Though logic would dictate it was used against spirits in many ways, as the dragoncat irately referenced in his backstory, that's not versus gods.

Best way to GM would be to do Metal or Earth next, since Fire offers no bonus to any other element, and we get a bonus to Nature from Water already, maximizes efficiency even with walls. If we don't hit a wall at 2GMs, get Fire next.
>>
>>39345547

>>39345547
Does Earth GM give a bonus to Nature as well? Because we could aim for Nature GM after that, and with Water and Earth bonuses beat out even other Nature GMs.

You sever the connection after wishing your Master luck in whatever it is he has planned, instead reaching out to Chrys via the brooches. {Chryssa, how is Zahak doing? I've heard he was acting out.}

There's a delay before she responds. {Zahak has been more playful than usual. I believe he would benefit from getting out of the city. I have been debating recently whether I ought to bring him out to the desert to hunt, as I believe that would help him to work out some of his excess energy, but I worry it may unnecessarily expose him to discovery.}

You're glad she seems to have predicted what you were going to suggest. {I think it ought to be fine. So long as you take him far enough into the desert and make sure he doesn't stray too far. Take him at night, just to be safe. That way there shouldn't be too many people on the roads and those that are will be clearly visible by their torches and campfires.}

Chryssa seems satisfied with that advice. {Very well, I shall take him out hunting tonight. Was there anything else that you wished to discuss with me?}

You take a moment to consider whether you want to bring up her mood, but ultimately decide that you may as well. {I've heard that you've been acting strangely. Is everything alright?}

When her reply comes you can tell that she's considered it carefully, her thoughts seem stilted and the wording unnatural. {I have been thinking about many things lately. I worry that I may be acting too demanding. It is not of your concern, but merely a private matter that I am working through.}

Huh, seems she's a bit uncomfortable talking about it. {Alright, well. I'm off to kill your husband. See you soon!}
(1/2)
>>
With that you sever the connection and switch your focus to Mortia. {How go your lessons on magic with my old Master? I've heard the two of you have been spending quite a lot of time together lately dedicated to your studies.}

She seems cheerful when she responds. {They're going well! I've unlocked a whole new realm of Nature magic I had no idea existed, it's amazing! Like finding out you had an extra sense that you never knew existed. I don't know how I got by without it. He's also taught me a little bit about healing and Fire magic. He really is a fantastic teacher, always patient and kind. Really eager to teach as well.}

That doesn't sound at all like the Master Karim you knew. The Master Karim you knew was a sadistic, impatient, demanding son of a bitch who just so happened to know what he was doing. He would only teach you anything if he could contrive some way to teach it to you that amused him. Sure, he was like a father to you. You'd even go so far as to call him a kind man, though you didn't really think so at the time. What he's not is either patient or eager.

Turning your attention once more to Mortia, you pose a question. {You haven't noticed any improper behavior from him, have you?}

Mortia seems almost offended. {What? No! He's been nothing but an angel, truly.} What on Earth is an angel? It sounds like she's mispronouncing the old Rhynian word for messenger. {Why would you suspect him of something inappropriate?}

Gods above, she truly is quite dense. {No reason, I merely wished to ensure that you weren't being taken advantage of. Anyway, I'm pleased to hear that your lessons are going well.}

Except a nuke is a very hard weapon to use, especially politically and one with a very limited number of applications. A Dragon? That thing is a massively tough (Potentially) spellcasting attack Helicopter.

The comparison doesn't really work, especially if you look into how many settings Elves have accidentally fucked the world sideways with some magical superweapon.

Or heck, even ignoring that...that's 'Fantasy Medieval Elf' vs 'Modern Human'. As opposed to 'Modern Elf vs Modern Human' or 'Fantasy Medieval Elf vs Fantasy Medieval Human'
>>
You sever the connection for the final time and turn your attention to the road, digging your heels into your guar's flanks and driving it into a full run across the old paved Rhynian road which cuts through the fields of towering grass like some sort of ancient scar.

You ride hard all day and most of the night, but after hours upon hours in the saddle your back starts to hurt, your legs feel as if they're on fire, and the mere thought of sitting down in the saddle causes your nuts to ache. You resolve to make camp for the night, steering your guar off the road and into the vast fields of grass which flank it on either side. You steer your guar out perhaps thirty feet before you hear a rustling in the grass and jerk back on the reins, bringing the animal to a halt.

Reaching into your cloak, you rest your hands on the grip of your saber. The rustling came from somewhere off to your left, though you can't see anything. The grass is too thick.

You release a pulse of nature magic, your vision turning into an endless field of green. Indeed, perhaps trying to detect a living creature whilst in the middle of a giant field of grass taller than you are wasn't the best idea. However, as the pulse of magic sweeps through the surrounding foliage you notice something curious. A space entirely devoid of life, with a bright green orb about as large as your head at its center.

You release another pulse of vys, and sure enough you see the same thing again. It's roughly six feet to your left, crouched down. It's shaped like a human, or perhaps an elf, but it's far too short to be a Samjan. At least, you think it is. It's a bit hard to tell. Why all its extremities appear entirely devoid of life is a mystery to you.

You're not sure if it has any weapons, if it's a bandit or just a traveler. It hasn't attacked you yet, what or whoever it is. You draw your saber from your cloak, the blade coated in some sort of strange black material and the cutting edge glowing with vys.

>Dismount and investigate.
>Ride on, it's probably a corpse or something of that sort.
>Call out to it, see if it responds.

>>39349389

Yeah. It was more 'It's an apples to oranges' complaint.

You compare a nuke so some big ritual spell that drops a meteor on a city, not dragons and mecha armour.

But yeah, Enchanted Weapons and Armour would be the shit and would promote a similar sort of small numbers of more equipped men that modern military operations favor.

I actually wonder how golems and such would hold up to most modern anti-tank stuff. A lot of anti-tank favors penetration over full destruction becuase tanks are full of vulnerable things that can be taken out. Most fictional golems don't seem to give many shits about holes unless you can take them fully apart.

Do we have our warlock armor on yet?
>>
You raise your voice, calling out to whatever this creature is. “Who goes there? What do you want?” Rather than a response, you hear the grass rustle only moments before some sort of creature lunges at you. It parts the grass, sailing towards you almost too fast to follow. You swing, but miss. A moment later it's upon you, dragging you from your guar. The guar spooks, letting out a panicked roar before dashing into the grass.

The creature seems impossibly strong, and far more skilled than you hand to hand. What you have and it doesn't is magical ability. Bracing your feet against its abdomen you pump vys into your legs, kicking out with magically enhanced strength. The creature flies away from you, crashing through the tall grass surrounding you. It's up and on its feet again a moment later, but you're already channeling magic for another spell. As you release a burst of vys the grass surrounding you bends to obey your will, beginning to coil itself around the creature's limbs.

Unfortunately the creature is too strong for mere grass to restrain it. It breaks the bonds, pushing itself to its feet. It reminds you in many ways of Fulvia's shell when she drops her illusion. The difference being that Fulvia's shell has some sort of artificial muscle tissue covering it. This creature is simply solid metal, all the way through. The design is rather sleek though, and less stylized than other similar Rhynian golems you've seen. It's wearing some sort of strange shawl, and clothes which seem to actually be apart of it.

You stand as well, wincing as pain shoots through your right side. You think you might have pulled something in your back. A simple fix, you just channel a little healing magic. It doesn't really take much time at all. You've managed to keep a hold of your sword, so you're far from unarmed. You're starting to wonder whether or not your spear or trident would've been better choices for this particular situation.

You channel vys, holding out your hand towards the creature. You draw water from the air around you, from the grass, and from the soil. Ice begins to accumulate around the creatures joints, crawling across its surface and slowly freezing it solid. You think that's the end of it, but much to your surprise there's a sharp crack as vents open across the golem's body. Heat radiates off its surface, hot air hissing through the vents at a steady pace.

Of course, that's a simple enough problem to solve for a Grandmaster such as yourself. For every inch of ice it melts, you freeze two more. It manages to free one limb or another momentarily, but never for long. Soon the ice creeps into its internal workings, spreading throughout its apparently hollow body. The vents fall silent, the creature frozen solid.
>Vys Pool: (43/52)

>Combat Over

You approach the strange golem. It still seems to be struggling against the ice judging by the constant pops and cracks issuing from the ice. However, you simply reinforce any weaknesses that form. As you draw near the creature manages to surprise you by speaking. “Please do not damage me. I wish merely to ask questions.” It's voice is masculine, but strange. Unlike Fulvia's voice, which seems entirely human to a casual listener, this creature's voice is alien. It seems to echo unnaturally, its pronunciation of Rhynian impossibly precise and lacking any hint of an accent.

You sighed, sliding your saber into the folds of your cloak. “If you merely wished to ask me questions why would you attack me? I would have been more than happy to answer whatever you wished. Believe it or not, this is not my first time encountering one of-” You gesture vaguely at the creature. “-your kind.”

The golem stares at you in silence for an uncomfortable stretch, but does eventually answer. “I awoke inside a Rhynian facility in a state of extreme disrepair. I was attacked by several experimental war beast which were housed at the facility and forced to terminate them prematurely. I left the facility in search of any signs of Rhynian military infrastructure. I have surmised in my travels that there is no Rhynian presence remaining in this area.”

“I spotted you, a Hiacian. Hiacians are the enemy. I sought to subdue you for questioning. I did not wish to harm you any further than was required to subdue you. I wish to know when this region was seized by the Hiacians and for how long you have ruled this area. I wish to know where the nearest Rhynian presence can be located. If you are truly willing to cooperate I would ask your name so that I might declare you a collaborator to my superiors. Your family will be spared when this area is retaken by the Rhynian Empire.”

Seems whatever this thing is it only just woke up. You wonder how many Rhynian experiments there are like this, creatures still living in a time long forgotten?

>Explain to the golem that both the Rhynian and Hiacian Empires have collapsed. Point it towards the Academy of Anthus.
