Current Recap:

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff. You are the coolest person you know, and with one notable exception, you are probably the most badass. Currently, you are in some magical medieval realm helping some guy named Frederick pull off an inter-planar invasion scheme. You also picked up some baggage in the form of Farren, a recently orphaned girl person. You’re pretty sure the issue will deal with itself.

As for your job, your employer’s a pretty cool guy. He’s up against long odds, but he’s like a George Washington wannabe, so maybe he’s on the right side of history. Freddy’s enemies are offering a whole lot for you to betray him – tempting as it may be though, it’d be a jerk move.

Unfortunately, his enemies know about his plans, and will probably try to stop you from getting the job done. They don’t know where you’re going yet. You need to get to your objective fast, before they have a chance to figure it out.

With the Seraphis xenophobes breathing down your neck though, you’ll have to find a happy compromise between speed and stealth. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a fight with both Freddy’s enemies and the local mage knights. Neither are likely to be pushovers, even for you.

--

You turn to examine Tarris’s caravan once more. Lots of people of all shapes and sizes, from unicorns to elves to filthy peasants. You and the rest of your party might be able to blend in going in past Pelheft by sticking with these people. Sounds like there’s going to be a lot of knights around the fortress city, from what you’ve heard. Though their leisurely pace is probably not what Ranthix would have in mind, might be worth the time burned.
>>
>>39381023

You’ll have to bring it up. But first, you look back at Tarris the goblin trader. “So magical caravan of magical merchants,” you say shrewdly. “You got to have some cool stuff for sale around here. Like. Magical stuff. Or like, cool crafty kinds of things. Right?”

Tarris nods. “Mine occupation is the fashioning of precious stones and ornaments,” says the goblin, “though for thee, I would imagine other interests.”

Frederick gives you an impatient look. “We’re not here to shop,” he says.

Tarris waves him off with a sharp gesture. “There is no need. I know what Sierra seeketh.” The merchant beckons you closer and tells you briefly of a few interesting buys.

-Ye Oldde Caravane-
>Obsidian jewelry (70$) – Not magic, but pretty cool anyway for the price.
>Secured Pouch (75$) – A small drawstring bag that will not open without the owner’s permission.
>Wily Satchel (700$) – A leatherwork satchel that has twice as much room on the inside as on the outside.
>Ring of Warning (1200$) – Warns wearer when in imminent danger.
>Sotark Elixer (3000$) – Brings supernal clarity to the imbiber’s thoughts for three hours.

“Seriously?” you ask. “Three thousand dollars? I doubt you guys take debit out here.”

“Thou canst pay at a later time, if not here, straight away,” says the goblin.

You’ll have to give this some thought.

Farren bips on over around now. “Who’s this?” she asks, sizing up the goblin. “A secret envoy?”

“Tis so,” says Tarris in a mysterious tone, stepping over to Sunrise the unicorn to lay a hand on his shoulder. “I am the envoy of secrets.”
>>
>>39381031

You snort. “Tarris is kind of a friend I guess,” you say, not quite sure. “Actually, now that I think about it, you mentioned falling in with a caravan.” You gesture to the carriages and carts and stuff. “This looks like a caravan to me, and Tarris could make sure you’re not totally on your own.”

Farren considers your position. “Tis a proper proposition,” she says. “I wouldn’t mind staying on till Pelheft, if it’s no inconvenience. If you need my help avoiding trouble with the Seraphis, it would be no trouble on my behalf.”

Hmm.

>I guess if you don’t mind. Kind of useful to have a local onboard.
>I’d rather not drag you into mortal peril. We’re going to get into trouble sooner or later.
>Well, maybe we’ll go along with the caravan all the way to Pelheft. Might be slower, but I doubt the Seraphis will be as suspicious.
>This isn’t your show. See what Frederick wants to do.

How much money do we have? If we have enough we should grab everything in case we can reverse-engineer the stuff. Also, the obsidian jewelry might be useful later as a gift or if we can enchant it.

Can the Sotark Elixir give us control during our blood rages?
>>
>>39381052
Ring of Spidey Sense? Neat. Really like that thing.
Really hoping that it's not operating on a charge system like nearly every other magic item. That'd suck if it turned off at the start of every single fight as soon as they get one good swing in that we could have dodged without it.

The Elixer would probably help quite a bit with deciding what to do with the landwell. Or, since it seems we're siding with Freddy, dealing with the Eclipse goons. Not sure if I wanna buy that, but I wouldn't be opposed if others wanted to.

As for what to do with Farren... Well we really shouldn't take her with us. It's not the right thing to do and she's going to freak out about it eventually.
>>
>>39381292
Sierra won't be able to reverse engineer it because she's piss poor at magic stuff. Outside of innate racial powers, she can reliably do the most basic cantrip there is and that's about it.
Also, meta, it would be busted as fuck and Languid would just say no.

>Can the Sotark Elixir give us control during our blood rages?
That would be so broken god damn. Let the rage build up, then pop the bottle towards the end and let the anger flow. It'd be one hell of a way to deal with the Eclipse of we need to.
>>
>>39381368
Well, I was kind of hoping that any of our demon buddies would know how to work with these enchantments.

Also the elixir would help us avoid a situation in which our luck ran out and we actually killed someone important to us.
>>
>>39381052
>>Secured Pouch (75$) – A small drawstring bag that will not open without the owner’s permission.
>>
>>39381382
It'd be really finicky to actually drink it to counteract a bloodrage we aren't intentionally causing.
>>
That Elixir sounds neat, but having complete clarity might reveal truths one would rather not think about.
>>
>>39381404
Mm, true, but a chance of Sierra remembering she had the elixir and drinking it last-minute is better than nothing.

Also, you think the secured pouch is damage resistant? Else someone'd just cut it open. And what happens when you cut the wily satchel open? Does it explode?
>>
>Not using the elixer to get perfect info out of the Shadows about some stuff
>>
oh what if we made that potion into like tranq dart for isaac to use if we ever start to loose it
>>
>>39381452
I'd worry that it wouldn't penetrate our skin since we tend to wear armor on our torso, have armored flesh everywhere else, and once a bloodrage starts our PP skyrockets and our powers get stronger, which means we're going to be spamming explosions and the shadows will act as armor if we're not.

>>
>>39381477
that reminds me, are we weak vs tactical flashlights?
>>
>>39381590
Sort of? If it's dark enough that a flashlight is an advantage, we can just use the shadows behind the light beam to turn the thing off or yank it out of the hands of the person using it.

But yeah, a flashlight attached to a gun would give us a hell of a lot more problems than just a gun.
>>
>>39381622
this makes me giggle
>>
>>39381622
On the other hand though, as long as we're wearing clothes we can use the shadows under our clothes as armor right? And same thing if we're wearing a mask.

How much cash do we have?
>>
>>39381658
I don't think those are "thick" enough. Every other time we've tried to use the shadows inside of things in an otherwise light area, it hasn't gone too well.
>>
>>39381658
>stuffing our bra with shadows.
>>
>>39381669
We don't have to pay now.
>>
>>39381669
We could always ask Freddy to take what we spend here out of our payment and give it to Tarris
>>
>>39381052
Hey, I have to sleep, it's not an option any more. But if it comes up, I will always vote against betraying Frederick in this situation. We took a job, we're doing the job, and if the other side wants to negotiate with us for other contracts later that's fine but I feel strongly that so long as Freddy plays straight with us we should play straight with him.

Sierra ain't no fucking snitch, not since day 1 with her old gang.
>>
>>39381784
Fred's not that bad a guy either. And Eclipse seem to assholes, oppressing people for what they are and whatnot, stuff that really grinds our gears
>>
>>39381784
>Sierra ain't no fucking snitch, not since day 1 with her old gang.
True dat
>>
You figure it’s not bad having Farren along, at least until Pelheft. “If you don’t mind, I guess,” you say. “Useful to have a local onboard.”

Frederick nods in agreement. “We’ll see you to the fortress, but from then on, you’re on your own path,” he says.

“I have no argument with that,” Farren replies.

You turn your attention back to Tarris, and decide that you have plenty of cash to burn – after upgrading your wardrobe and buying a laptop and stuff, you still have somewhere around 8k in the bank. It’s not every day you talk to a magic merchant, so you take the goblin up on all recommendations. “Make it quick though,” you say, “we’re on a tight schedule.”

“At once,” says the goblin, bowing slightly before taking off to make the requisite purchases from the other caravaneers. Caravanists? Whatever. Anyway, a minute later, the goblin reappears with a cool leatherwork satchel thing and hands it to you.

You take it and rifle through its contents – though the interior space is, as promised, at odds with the dimensions of the bag itself.

You find everything inside. There’s a teensy glasswork bottle stoppered with a cork full of a light, airy liquid, which you guess is the 5 hour brain energy potion thing. Then there’s a little pouch, also leather, that has the same style as the satchel itself – probably made by the same craftsman.

Finally, beneath a wicked set of shiny black bracelets and stuff, you find a curvy braided silver ring, which you guess is your magic spider sense charm. You pluck that one out and slip it onto a finger. You don’t feel any differently, but you suppose it only works when you’re about to get into danger.

You are pleased with your purchases. (-5045 Cash Money: 2955$, -6 Stress: 8/103) “Thanks a bunch,” you say, smirking at the goblin.
>>
Languid is awesome
>>
>>39382002

The goblin bows again in reply. You kind of like people bowing to you, now that you think about it. (-2 Stress: 6/103) You notice that the others are already walking off, leaving you behind. You wave goodbye to the goblin and the unicorn, and take off to catch up.

You go to stuff your new things into your backpack as you go, though to make room you have to throw a few more things into the satchel. Kind of weird, but it works.

--

You soon leave the caravan behind, with Ranthix setting an uncompromising pace. The rest of the morning and some of the afternoon pass by easily, with you spending most of the time chatting away with Ro and Farren. Good people.

Anyway, the road bobs and weaves through the hilly, brush covered landscape, at least until you get to a particularly big hill. When you reach the top, you’re rewarded with a commanding view of a vast, frigid plain. To the north, you spot a huge lake frosted over with shimmering ice. Tiny buildings and houses dot the landside.

Following the road directly east, there’s another sizable hill, almost the last in sight. Great walls surround this hill, and the interior is crammed with tall, slightly crooked buildings. Buildings crowd aroudn the exterior as well, tanneries and crafts shops and churches. A picturesque castle sits atop the crest of the hill.

Hundreds of smoky grey trails rise from hundreds of chimneys, signs of busy townsfolk and industry. The road heading forward seems particularly crowded with merchants, refugees, and random people.

Your party heads on toward the city, or more appropriately, toward a junction in the road.

“The landwell is on the other side of the city, several miles further on,” Frederick tells you, careful not to be overheard by any passersby.
>>
>>39382019

“Sounds good,” you say.

Coming closer to the fork in the road, Rowan gets your attention with a wary look. “Seraphis,” she says.

“PRETENDERS,” Ranthix corrects her, glowering at the pretenders in question.

You squint, and just barely make out the impending danger. A dozen knights with silvery armor, faux-wings, and white double-crosses emblazoned on their shields ride up the road. Travelers part way for the procession. They’re still a long ways off.

Zote growls something to Frederick, and the latter nods. “I know,” he tells his robot sidekick.

“We’ll make sure we don’t stick out,” says Scott, not looking too concerned. “Don’t sweat it.”

>Sure thing.
>Aren’t they all magic? What if one can see through illusions? We’ll just look more suspicious.
>>If we hurry, we can get to the fork before they do, we’ll be out of the way.
>>Let’s get off the road. We can follow one of those wagon trails for a minute.
>>There’s all kinds of people on the road. Let’s just act natural, they're in a rush to go smash beetles.

> Eclipse have someone who is capable of tracking us by magic

> But they aren't doing so

Smart money says that they're using another way of tracking us, then.

> Farren.

I mean, I'm not saying we should murder her in her sleep or anything, but all in all she seems to be taking everything that's happened surprisingly well.

We should consider focusing on spying on her or trying to scry her for magical items, or rooting through her stuff if she's staying with us. I mean, this is kind of a dark ops thing we're going on and she did show surprising skill a couple threads earlier in sneaking.

Just . . . lets do a little bit of thorough investigating here.
>>
>>39381784
I'd say Sierra would forego personal gain at this time to help Freddy out. I hope it pays in the end.
>>
>>39382070
Why would they track us? They know where we are going.

>>39382085
If they win we have a place to run and live freely, if they fail then no big loss.
If they lose because of us, no haven, no reputation and a little bit of info. If they win WITHOUT us, we have an entire plane hating us and a little bit of info
It's kinda obvious which to pick, imo
>>
Later on we should go on world tours battling landmasters and claiming landwells, i wanna know just how much more cute Sierra can get
>>
>>39382091
We're a hostile force on a mission that could seriously impact them.

You don't assume in that case, and you would want to get an accurate and up to date assessment of their parties composition, capabilities, and current location.

Like I'm saying, we don't have to go full shadow-run, but we seriously don't know anything concrete about this chick. Everyone that could verify her story is dead, and we stuck with Freddy instead of Farren last time so we didn't get to interact with these "Friends of her Fathers" who could easily be her contacts IF she is a spy.
>>
>>39382031

>>39382171
I agree with this anon. We need to do a full background check on Farren or at least spy on her to see what she does when no one is looking.

Also, when is she going to realize what's happened and break down in tears? Or has she already mourned, accepted, and moved on?

We should really ask about her future. What marketable skills does she have? What is she going to do once we leave? She's a few years younger than Sierra and it'll be hard for her to survive on her lonesome. We could also sniff out her emotions and try to determine whether she's being shady or lying during this time too.
>>
>>39382228
If Baron sorts Baron's shit out.
Baron gets love.
If Baron can't sort Baron's shit out.

Skin falling off is a Hellion thing and is unlikely to happen to Sierra. Inferni have thicker, armored skin. Belphegoran's have greyscale shin that's otherwise human. Verwelken are barely even really corporeal, but Sierra's VE heritage seems to have manifested mainly as an external shadow organ outside the skin.

It was in Deniable Assets Quest, about a super future space merc, sadly dead now. He's running something new now.
It probably is you, he couldn't spell either.
>>
>>39382550
It's a pretty good reason, actually. I mean, we're a teenager for one, a demon for two, and royalty for three.

I mean, I guess we could casually date him, but MUH INTIMACY issues. Second of all, it could fuck up our standing with the other demons, which is shakey enough already due to age. Finally, he's just a meat target.

Also, he goggled over To and flipped over us. And we didn't even get to the murdering people or drinking blood part. Baron is a total good guy Paladin type. He ain't gonna handle that well, or our plans for lots of murder in the future.

Fuck, indirectly we're going to cause a lot of death. I mean, lots.
>>
>>39382564
We can probably find him some magical steroids so that he doesn't die if he is with us
>>
>>39382613
First, I don't understand why everyone has an issue with him reacting better to Ro. Ro is part angel, traditionally the good guys. We are mostly demon, and look fucking horrifying. I don't think Sierra really cares about our standing with other demons and I doubt the ones we know would care much (Ranthix might have an issue if he keeps being weak).

If they guy mans up, I don't see why we couldn't try.

All that said, I would prefer all romance would be kept causal, Sierra is NOT ready for that sorta thing yet.
>>
>>39382596
English is my second language and i've spent the last 5 hours on buses and trains but yeah that was me, unless there has been another anon that has done thesame thing
>>
>>39382669
Nope, blowjob anon, no one would dare infringe on your territory.
>>
>>39382408
>But i'm content with her getting more demon like
I could go for some demonic tattoos.
>>
>>39382658
Also, we can't let him weaken ourselves morally, in the sense that we should care for every individual life that we take. Sierra has wantonly slaughtered everyone she considered to be "evil" or an enemy, and I doubt Baron would let that continue.

At the very least, he would make Sierra start doubting herself, and if Sierra hesitates during a critical moment she could easily die.
>>
>>39382796
I don't know, I think Baron might be a good influence on Sierra. He would check her faster than Wolfgang and Co. would if she starts to descend into fuck-murder-torture style and lose all sense of morality
>>
>>39382842
Well, I feel like she's going to need to have some of that mindset if she wants to follow in her mother's footsteps. And Ranthix is already pretty good at keeping Sierra humble and on the "right" track. I doubt he'll let her descend into madness.

Madness perhaps not, but why do we want her to become like her mother. Ranthix won't let her become a raging psycho, but probably wouldn't care too much if we offhandedly killed innocents. Most of the demons don't seem to care too much. I think the arguments over who we should waifu are pointless, as we shouldn't get into any sort of romance for the sake of our sanity and everyone else's safety.

Something happened during the boat incident while her daughters were present, and her consort mindwiped her daughters so the details of the incident wouldn't get out and so they wouldn't be scarred for life/in danger.

As long as Sierra becomes more powerful than her mother, protecting the people valuable to her shouldn't be an issue.

i can't remember the reasons for that post but i am very passionate about the quests i like and will go to great lengths to secure their continued survival, especially this one as it got me through some though times
i've been planning to run my own quest about a special viking with lowish fantasy, high violence and high sexual content but i am worried that it will attract the wrong crowd of people and go a different way then planned, and i also don't have anywhere i'm willing to run it, it will most likely be on tg because of the samefaggotry on akun but the stupidity of some people on here scares me
>>
>>39383414
I kind of want to run a quest but I'm not really sure how to go about it. Do you know of any guides or anything for tips on running quests, since you're planning on running one yourself?
>>
>>39383494
There was /qtg/'s guide, but it's pretty shit iirc.
Basically, don't have open ended chargen, don't be afraid to rule out options but remember the ability to choose direction is the reason people play quests. If you suspect samefaggotry, close the vote and decide for yourself, either use a good system or no system, and for the love of god, never use anything but majority vote in most cases. Rolling, first to X and co. are all shit.

I just read the first thread of Paladin of Joy, hahaha

What system would you recommend to use?
>>
>>39383720
I really like d100 roll under and dicepoolsmmmmm, dicepools. There are plenty of good systems and honestly I'd recommend most of them, just avoid 3d20 crits override, as while it can lead to some amusing critting it's kinda shit. Honestly it depends on the type of quest, action quests do best (In my opinion) with Fallguy's system, d100 like this quest seems to be pretty good, dicepools are simple and the Monsterhearts system Tartarus uses is simple and pretty good imo.

You are not so sure. “They’re all magic though. What if one can tell we’re magicking around?” you say. “It’ll just make us stand out even more.”

“They’d need to be looking for that to work,” says Alan. “It won’t be a problem.”

Well, the Gracies are the resident illusion experts, so you allow their point to stand. “Do your thing then, I guess,” you say.

The brothers go to work.

You feel a gentle staticky field fall upon you, though otherwise you don’t seem any different. However, looking around, everyone looks more or less like the peasants you’re passing on the left and right. Ranthix and Rowan appear in dull, hardened leather armor, Rowan being rendered somewhat more plain, Ranthix less tall. Everybody’s clothes take on a greyish, worn look, and their skin seems an unhealthy bluish shade from the frost. You can still recognize faces, but everyone has a sense of belonging among the crowd.

Neat trick.

The Seraphis ride forward and those on the road scramble out of the way. You step aside, along with your friends and companions. The knights ride by at a canter, flecks of frozen dirt flicking up under the torrent of hooves. The sound of jangling metal fills the air for a minute, as well as the sensation of intense power. A few of the Seraphis spare a glance in the direction of your party, but none seem unduly surprised or suspicious.

A moment later they’ve past, and are rapidly growing smaller. Your group moves on for a few minutes and reach the fork. Your group moves to the side of the road, and the Gracies drop the illusions. This garners a few looks, but the process is so fluid and subtle that you doubt anybody really noticed.

“That worked out better than I expected,” says Scott, letting out a relieved breath.

Orias gives them a curious look. “You expected worse?”

“Like Sierra said. They’re magical,” he replies.

“ENOUGH YIP YAP,” Ranthix says. He scowls at Farren and points toward the walled city. “THERE IS YOUR PELHEFT, URCHIN. GO YOUR WAY.”

Farren looks over at you and Rowan. “I thank you for your help,” she says flatly, not really smiling. Although you guess she doesn’t really have much to smile about. Maybe the fact she’s on her own is catching up to her.

“We’ll drop by if we ever come back this way,” says Rowan, giving the girl a gentle hug. “Things will get better. I promise.”

“Right,” you say, carefully keeping your distance. “Ditto that.”

Meanwhile, you can hear Frederick discussing things with the Gracies. “At this rate we can get there before sundown,” he says. “The less time we give the Eclipse, the better.”

You find yourself wandering over. “Almost there, huh?”

“It’s somewhere in the Field of Rust, a few miles east of the city. How near do you need to be to the landwell to locate it?”

>Wait. You don’t know where it is?
>Point me in the right direction and I’ll sniff it out.

“Point me in the right direction is all I need,” you say.

Frederick nods. “Let’s move out,” he says, leading the way.

You lag behind with Rowan to say goodbye to Farren. “See you later I guess,” you say.

Farren watches the others leave. “You have your task, whatever you’re here for,” she says. “I don’t expect your business will bring you back this way.”

“Well, probably not,” you say. “Still.”

She smiles a little. “Still,” says Farren. “Good luck.”

“See ya,” you say.

Farren waves and sets off down the road toward the city.

“I bet she’ll do all right. She’s nice,” says Rowan.

“Unless she’s an Eclipse spy,” you say ominously.

Ro rolls her eyes, and you laugh.

“Whatever. Let’s find your landwell already.”

You follow Frederick along the road leading past the city for some time, leaving the castle and its hill behind you. Looking back, it seems small and almost toylike in comparison to the distant mountains at its back. Before you, meanwhile, are desolate hills, gullies, and streams that stretch out as far as the eye can see, underneath a bone-white sky.

You keep at this for a few hours, while the sun starts sinking in the sky. You haven’t seen a single person since you set off into the depths of the rolling landscape.

Frederick walks along, consulting his map. “We’re nearly there.” He pauses, consults a compass, and points off the road. “That way.”

He leads the way off road. Reeber shoots ahead, chasing after a murder of angry crows.

Crunching through the dead grass packed under the snow, you find you have to watch your step. Gaps in the snow mark dark, frozen pools.

Orias picks his way around a prickly batch of rigid reeds, iced by the cold. “This place reminds me of the Chthonian lowlands in winter,” he says.

Ranthix scowls back at him, and jerks a claw toward the white clouds above. “THE SKY IS WRONG COLOR,” he shouts.

Orias looks upward. “It could be an overcast day,” he replies.

>>39385173

“OVERCAST DAYS BRING ASHFALL,” argues Ranthix. He sticks out his tongue for a brief moment, as if trying to catch a raindrop. He gives up with a scowl. “I DON’T TASTE ASH.”

Orias takes a deep breath. “You can almost smell it though, if you use your imagination,” he says.

“IF YOU USE YOUR IMAGIANTION, ANYWHERE IS THE CHTHONIAN LOWLANDS IN WINTER,” Ranthix accuses.

You smirk at the conversation, and consider the harsh landscape about you. You don’t really smell any ash, but you do smell the dank murkiness of stagnant water. Despite the dead things everywhere, you can also feel a hint of life buried beneath the snow, like seeds and crap, probably.

Wait just a second. You’re not on your territory, you shouldn’t be able to sense life at all.

You’re not feeling seeds, you’re feeling a ley line. Or at least a hint of one. Like, a minor tributary. If you weren’t paying attention you would have missed it entirely. You concentrate on the feeling, and manage to pick up its general direction.

Feels like its flowing off at an angle, between two hills on your right. Part of you wants to take off like a bloodhound, but if you’re getting close to the landwell, you might want to exercise caution. You don’t know if the Eclipse might be waiting for you.

You stop in your tracks. “Found it,” you say.

Everybody turns to look at you.

“FINALLY,” Ranthix says.

“Where?” asks Frederick, looking around as if he might be able to see it.

“Over there someplace,” you say, waving in the general direction. You raise a hand, and Monster crackles into existence perched on your wrist. “I’ll scout it out. Alan, can you and your brother make this guy look like a bird or something?”

Alan performs a brief calculation in his head. “As long as he stays within a half-mile,” he says.

“Don’t think it’s that far off,” you say.

“Then it’s no problem,” says Scott. He steps forward and reaches a hand out toward your imp.

Monster snarls and hisses at the incoming hand. “He’ll freak if you touch him,” you warn.

Rowan chuckles at this comment for some reason.

Alan joins his brother. “No touching necessary. Just have to get close.”

You make Monster calm down, and allow the hellborn to do their work. In about half a minute, you no longer have an imp on your arm, you have a feathery and disgruntled magpie or whatever. The illusion’s no glamor, though. It still feels like you’ve got a bitter imp clinging to your hand.

“Go scope out the bad guys,” you say, throwing Monster upward. The imp squawks angrily and zips off into the sky with a rapid flutter of wings. Once he’s gone, you wave to the others to follow you. “Need to get closer to know specifically where to send Monster.”

Zote heads out before you, pulling out his submachine gun. The robot is not taking chances. He gives a couple brief hand signals, pointing at the Gracies. The two brothers fan out as well, Alan producing a revolver from a pocket and Scott shouldering his shotgun.

Ranthix creeps forward, Reeber staying on the Thultal’s heels, and gives you a nod.

Everybody’s still in their glamors, which you suppose will give your side the element of surprise if you do run into any trouble.
>>
>>39386114

“I’ve got your back,” says Rowan, drawing her two-handed sword. White and grey reflections shine clearly in the long blade.

You move forward, following along the ley line to its destination, or perhaps to its source. The feeling of life intensifies the further you follow the line, giving you good indication you’re going the right way. You begin to see the energy manifesting in silent, cold capillaries hovering just above the ground. Definitely the right way.

You get enough of a direction to put Monster on the right track. His little imp eyes scour the countryside from above, detecting a family of winter rabbits, a white snow fox, and a deer carcass.

Meanwhile, you lead the rest of the party along the ley line, past the hills and into a low meadow.

Great hulks of rusted iron lay here and there in the clearing, each iced over. Tufts of rugged swamp plants jut out from chinks in the corroded metal. From the nearest, you feel a hint of something. An emotion, almost too faint to even count as such.

Ranthix you and the others to steer clear of the wreckage, affording the things a wide berth himself.

Orias spares one of the hulks a cautious glance, and adjusts his dragon gun in his grip.

“What are these things?” asks Scott.

“Memories,” says Frederick. “The fighting was centered on the rift, we’re on the right track.”

You carry on, and begin to notice the hulks of iron aren’t the only remnants laying around. You spot irregularities in the snow – steel crossbow bolts sticking out from the snow, or snowy mounds with shields propped up on their sides.
>>
>>39386156

Rowan gets your attention and points to a small hill to the side. Except now that you’re looking at it, it’s not a hill. It’s a set of bones, big as a whale’s. An icy, inhuman skull the size of a Volkswagen beetle rests on its side by the whalebones, half of its jawbone missing. What teeth remain are the size of your forearm.

A nagging feeling nudges against the edge of your consciousness. Monster’s found somebody.

You look through his eyes. In a large, snowy clearing, by a mountain of wrecked, rusting iron, you see a figure. He’s sitting with legs folded, leaning back against a huge ram. The ram is huge, just shy the size of a horse, with massive, curled horns twisting on either side of its head.

Looking around, you can see the top of the rusted heap beyond a low hill. Though distant, it looks to be in the exact direction your ley line is leading.

>>

You send Monster in for a closer look. The guy looks normal enough, with furry winter clothes. The goat has a kind of saddle thing rigged up to it, with a big round shield hanging from one side. The dude meanwhile polishes the blade of a short spear. All in all, you’d say he’s just some random Cerran dude, except for the fact that he’s got an old rifle slung over one shoulder.

“Hey Freddy. Do Eclipse guys ride huge goats?” you ask.

“They ride drakes,” he replies. “Why?”

“There’s a dude with a goat between us and the landwell.”

Frederick nods, and gives Zote a few hand signals. The robot signs back, and Freddy looks ahead and motions around the mound of metal. “We’ll go around,” he says. “If everything works out, we’ll hit the well and get out before he ever knows we were here.”

The group shifts course to take a detour around the stranger. Except after a hundred feet, you realize all the ley lines in the area are actually leading to the jumbled mountain of rust, rather than to someplace on the other side.

The dude’s actually chilling at the landwell itself.

“Going around’s not going to work,” you say. “Goat guy’s on top of the landwell.”

This gives Frederick pause. “Is he a landmaster?”

You shrug. “Maybe,” you say.

“Is Monster seeing anybody else? Anybody at all?”

You shake your head. “Nope.”

Tell everyone right now, for the love of god, don't let him know that we're a landmaster. Dude will probably try to kill us if we do.

Freddy doesn't seem to know much about this shit, so we should probably go ahead and tell him that this dude could be anywhere between novice mage and one-man army. It'd probably help if we got a look at him to see his magic PP stuff so we have an approximation of how many wells he has claimed if he is.
>>
>>39386699
How big is this mountain? Are there enough obstructions to sneak up it, or would it be obvious to anyone on the mountain who bothers to look?

We'll probably want superior numbers. Maybe have a main group going up a more obvious way, while us, Ranthix, and maybe one other who is good at sneaking take a back route.

>>
He might just be some mage who wants to use the landwell for things, like Freddy or Philo.
>>
“If he’s in our way, we’ll have to deal with him somehow,” says Frederick.

“Look man,” you say, “if the dude’s a landmaster, there’s no telling how powerful he is. I mean, you might be able to whoop his ass by yourself, or maybe he’s so strong he can sweep us aside with a backward glance,” you say.

“What do you think we should do then?”

“Well, we do have numbers, and we might have surprise. I need to get a look at him myself, though, so I can tell what kind of ballpark we’re talking about.”

Frederick nods, and you take the group closer, the ley lines growing more powerful with every step.

As the base of the hill, Ranthix crouches down, his spear-gun thing in hand. “I and Orias will take up positions on the Ram-man’s flanks. Make no move until I give the signal,” he says in a low, urgent tone.

You nod.

“You. Stygian halfbreed,” Ranthix says, pointing to Scott. “You go with Orias on the north side.”

“Sure,” he says.

Ranthix gives everyone one last scowl before taking off. Orias and Scott go off in the other direction.

A minute later, a quiet click sounds on Frederick’s radio. “That’s the signal,” he says.

You creep toward the top of the earthen bank on your stomach, shedding your fur coat so as to be lighter weight. It’s cold, but the excitement lends you some warmth from the excitement.
>>
>>39387423

Pushing carefully through the grass, you reach the crest of the hill, Rowan not one foot below. The first thing you notice is the colorless white star of the landwell, glowing steadily in the center of the clearing, ringed by dead hulks of metal and the mountain of snowy wreckage behind it. It’s about seventy yards off. Ley lines converge in the sky around it, feeding into the silent well of pure energy.

Your immediate concern, however, sits on a little rug blanket thing about fifty yards from you, twenty from the landwell. He currently up his spear for examination. At his back, the ram’s ears flick in different directions, like little radar dishes. (Big Ram: 25/25 HP)

The creature’s master doesn’t look strange in any way, but there could always be a glamor or something going on. You’d have to get closer to be sure. (Goat dude: 10/10 HP)

“How much magic does he have?” Rowan whispers from below.

“I can’t tell from this far away,” you say, “but the landwell’s right there.”

“Did he already claim it?” she asks.

You squint back at the silvery landwell, small as a pintpoint. “I’m not sure,” you say. “Maybe not?”

Should you go down there and go chat him up? Your spider sense ring isn’t really doing anything at the moment, which might be a good sign, and Ranthix and Orias are on standby just in case.

The only way forward is to get closer, and the only way to do that is to reveal yourself. “Stay here,” you tell Rowan, standing up and working you way down the hill.

The ram pops up and watches you with silent eyes. Its master notices you a moment later, and stands up. He begins folding up his sitting blanket as you walk over through the snow.

This is pretty dangerous, but you’ve done dangerous stuff before. Still, you’ve never really met a landmaster before, so you’re not sure exactly how much danger you’re dealing with here. (+4 Stress: 10/103)

You find Reeber joining you at your side, though you don’t have the heart to shew him away. (-1 Stress: 9/103) Maybe if you’re lucky it’s not really danger. Maybe the guy with the animal sidekick isn’t a landmaster at all. Or maybe if he is, he just wants to talk or something.

The man throws the folded blanket into a saddle bag on the ram’s side, and pulls off the round shield. He props it neatly against his companion’s shoulder, and looks to you.

You get to the standoff distance, about midway between him and the hillside at your back.

The dude stands idly with arms folded, giving you an evaluating look.

You do the same for him. While he’s mortal, or something near to it, power wafts off of him in droves. (Goat man: 38 PP) Chances are he is a landmaster, you guess.

“Hi,” you say.

He watches you with an indecipherable expression. He replies with a rough voice, one that doesn’t see much use. “Hello,” he says.

>Introduce yourself.
>Who are you supposed to be?
>Do you know who I am?
>So how much are the Eclipse paying you?
>Your ram is pretty cool.
>Nice landwell you got there. Mind if I grab it?
>I’m going to be honest. I’ve never met another landmaster before. Are we supposed to duel to the death or something?

“That’s me,” you say, kind of sheepishly. “So. You come on your own or did the Eclipse hire you?”

“I needed the Eclipse to lead me to the general area. Frederick wasn’t specific in the job description,” he says. “They’ll be along sooner or later.”

“I’m guessing if I ask really nice, you’re not going to let me have the well,” you say.

“No,” he says. “You haven’t run into many landmasters, have you.”

“Not really. But you haven’t taken the landwell yet from what I can tell, so I’m guessing there’s something else going on.”

“I knew there was another landmaster headed here, so it does me no good to claim it with you on your way,” he says. “No landwell’s worth fighting over forever. Things like this generally call for a duel.”

Heh. You knew it’d come down to something like this. “Duel, huh?”

“The fight stops when somebody yields,” he explains. “If I yield, you take the landwell and do what you want with it. If you yield, you stay out of my business for good.” He gives you a wary look. “Agreed?”

“Are there rules? Like, is this no holds barred or what?”

The landmaster shakes his head. “No holds barred,” he says. “If you want, we could throw out firearm. Makes no difference to me. But if you want to include your friends, then I’ll have to ask to wait for my Eclipse friends to even it out.”

“Maybe not,” you say. You don’t really like the sound of that, and you also don’t like how he knew you had backup. “Hey. If I let you have the landwell, just hypothetically speaking, could you open it up for Frederick’s people?”

“I could, but I won’t,” he says. “The Eclipse want the well sealed. Wouldn’t do for me to turn on them after they helped me find it.”

Damn. “All right. Uh. I’ll be back. I kind of have somebody I need to talk this over with.”

Hugo nods. “Take your time,” he says.

You retreat from the clearing and rejoin Rowan, Frederick and the others that are still there.

Rowan watches you intently “What did he say?”

You briefly summarize the situation.

“Can you beat him in duel?” Frederick asks. “And if you can, can you do it quickly? We don’t know how long it will be until the Eclipse arrive.”

Well personally I feel that since he is the only real Landmaster (at least he claims to be, maybe he is just a powerful eclipse goon) we have actually ever met, has so far been mostly cool about this whole deal and appears to have a wealth of experience, it make me think he could prove useful for Sierra as a mentor on Landwells.

I'm gonna head to bed, but I will say one thing before I do. Ganking the guy will give Sierra a reputation of an effective operator who takes her Job seriously and its a good reputation to have.

However, Sierra is much more than a mere operator. Coming out a winner in a single duel against her peer can sement Sierra's reputation as a power to be reckoned with, beyond what she can do in a group and what she can do on her own. She is destined for greatness and her path should be paved with great deeds.

I'll leave it up to you guys to figure it out I'll be content either way.

Well, that's not how it works. Claim one and you have it for life. Presumably he'd need some time to seal the landwell, so he couldn't do it without us coming up on him from behind, so he waited, leading to a situation where we DON'T have to kill him, since it isn't bound to his life. It shows that he's cautious enough to have been around for some time.

However, Frederick still seems unsure. “You’re sure he won’t take the well after we’ve gone? It’s no good if the convoy comes through tomorrow to a sealed well.”

“He says he’ll leave my business to me when I win,” you say. “I think he’s legit, and I doubt the Eclipse brought a backup landmaster.”

“Fine. But be careful,” he tells you. “And be quick.”

“Yeah yeah, if I die you lose,” you say, coming back over the hill to rejoin Hugo in the clearing.

Hugo takes up his huge round shield from where it rests against the ram. “Guns?” he asks.

“Let’s keep guns out of it,” you say. “And... no real animals either.”

He nods, and snaps back at his ram with a firm gesture. The ram dips its head submissively, but otherwise doesn’t move. He unslings the rifle from his back and sets it down at his side.

You snap and send Reeber away as well. The hound is sorry to go, but your stern gaze is enough to send him off. Then you drop any gear you don’t need, dropping your Ruger on top. You don’t like to part with the weapon, but you also don’t want it weighing you down if you’re not going to use it.

“So... you know I could seriously maim you,” you say.

Hugo gives a faded smile. “Not easily,” he says. “I think we’ll know who’s well this is before that happens.”

“All right,” you reply, “but if the Eclipse up, all bets are off.”

“No, not really,” he says. “The second you want the fight to stop, you can yield. I’m not here to kill a child.”

“Whatever,” you say, but pull up short. “Actually. If I win, can I have some way to contact you? I kind of suck with landmastery things.”

“Parents not around?”

“Not really,” you say.

“Hm. We’ll see,” he says.

Faustler moves a few yards to the side, and you follow the movement, elaving you and him facing off. The field is clear and mostly level, though the snow presents a type of terrain you’re not wholly familiar with. The inert wrecks of iron scattered about the meadow might be useful as cover, but you’ll have to see about that.

Hugo faces you down, about ten yards away from you. He stands completely still, doing nothing. Wait. Did the duel start? He might be waiting for you to make the first move. Or maybe it’s mind games? Or maybe it’s just whoever moves first?

The suspense. (+3 Stress: 12/103)

Have Monster come in from behind, try to distract him. It won't truly work, but it might buy us a second or two. Go in hard, drop our glamour, turn Demon traits up to eleven, and Terrifying Glare the guy.

Summon Tiger behind one of the piles when we get a change. Out of sight where it could score ambush points. Watch out for him trying something similar.

Open the duel by nailing him with Terrorizing Glare. Corrupting his weapons would also likely be a good opening move.

Watch out for that spear. It's probably magic in some way, and it might allow ranged attacks like how we have Zelathis.

After, can we shoot up Monster to spy for us and shoot into cover, and then summon Tiger to hide in our spot while we shadowstep around to yet another one?

That way, he comes after us and is surprised by Tiger, and that's when we can counter attack from an unexpected flank, meanwhile Monster keeps us informed on when to do it.

If we duck into with somewhere with shadows, we can counter attack by getting in close and surrounding him with razor shadows while draining him. Hell, we can even drop the glamour at that point, and get him to submit.

We don't have to kill his ass, just dominate him.
>>
>>39391983
Nice moves.
>>
“Time out,” you say. You take an extra second to kick off your shoes. You’ll need full traction for this business.

Your opponent watches you curiously, but doesn’t object.

Now you’re good. “All right, time in.” At this moment, you look up into your opponent’s eyes, smile broadly, and attack him with a glare of sheer terror. (-2 PP: 31/33; +2 Stress: 14/103) You feel the raw emotion strike true, burning in through his eyes straight into his soul. Hugo gasps and takes a couple panicked steps backward, his expression contorting into one of great apprehension as he ducks down behind his shield in a defensive stance.

You lunge forward, closing in until you’re near enough to corrupt his weapon. You single out the spear and will black energy into its confines, causing it to blacken and screech with inhuman noise. (-2 PP: 29/33; +1 Stress: 15/103)

In response, Hugo takes a shaky step forward and thrusts the spear at you, or rather at the ground beneath your feet. You throw yourself clear with time to spare. Where you just stood, the earth warps and waves backward as if it were liquid, the snow dissolving into the muddy morass.

You commando roll through the ice and pop back up to your feet, ready for another round.

His weapon burning in his grip, Hugo curses and casts the spear aside – the weapon sails through the air and plants itself upright in the ground, still shrieking. The landmaster fixes himself firmly behind his huge round shield, and narrows his eyes at you, managing to regain some composure.

Suddenly, a whirlwind of dust kicks up on his left, a geyser of water showers up at his right, and a flicker of flame bursts above his head.
>>
>>39392388

Out of the dust steps a ram, comprised of gravel, granite, and stone. (Stone Ram: ??)

The water spraying forth from the earth likewise congeals into a form, this one that of a cougar made entirely of flowing water, somehow solid and liquid at the same time. (Sea Lion: ??)

Finally, and much less worryingly, a fiery eagle explodes into being above the landmaster, flames and smoke burning from its form. (Fire Falcon: ??)

Without hesitation, all three creatures charge forward straight at you.

He’s popped his summons, but he hasn’t delved into any of his actual power yet.

Sierra has

Fire Resistance: Most types of fire aren't hot enough to phase Sierra. She will not take damage or be burned by temperatures less than 2,250 degrees Fahrenheit. Her hair is similarly resistant to flames, and will not burn. She is also immune to any kind of intense fire or heat generated by her person. Armor: ~8 soak versus heat based damage. Passive ability. [IN]

So the eagle should be easy. Zelathis can do for the Sea Lion and we might be able to use the spear on the ram. He's playing it defensive, so we should take this opportunity to move around.

You snap, and Tiger bursts from a sudden clot of shadow – the shalbaan charges forth and crashes into the watery cougar as its about to intercept you, smashing it into a burst of flowing water that rapidly begins coming back into a solid form.

The stone ram levels its horns and charges forward for a bone-crushing strike, which you vault without undue effort.

Hugo remains behind his shield and directs the fire eagle down toward you, but you charge on without giving it heed. The fiery creature crashes against you but bounces off ineffectually, sparking and screeching – shocked, Hugo brings up his shield and shoves it toward you with the sharp edge. You, however, are just a little faster, and manage to get in under the weapon and tackle him.

This close, it’s all a matter of what to do, not how to do it.

He manages to get an arm under you and keep you off his face, but you don’t really need his face. You can bite him anywhere. He slams his palm into your jaw, but you take advantage of it to chomp down on his hand, rich, powerful blood stinging against your tongue as your fangs break skin.
>>
>>39393163

Meanwhile, you free your claws and go to press it to his throat and force a surrender, but instead of vulnerable flesh, you find stone.

Uh oh.

With little time to spare, you open up the void within you, draining as much power as you can out of him – you manage a good deal before the arm at your neck suddenly seizes power and hurls you off. (PP: 33) (Hugo: 28 PP, 9/10 HP [Poisoned])

You go flying, but manage to tumble against the ground only briefly before landing on your feet and claws. (-1 HP: 27/28)

In front of you, Hugo stands back up, his rocky countenance grey and unyielding. He grabs his shield up off the ground and charges, a look of sheer determination on his face.

Meanwhile, you see Tiger isn’t having a very good time with the water cougar – it looks more like he’s struggling to swim on land than actually fight. Meanwhile, the fire falcon makes another pass, coming back at you, which isn’t really a problem.

What is a problem is the fact that the stone ram is also charging at you, this time from your flank. Too many stone things. Without the shadows to protect you, any hits you take are going to be painful.
