Alright /tg/, you've done moths and flies, but now it is time to make a race of anthropomorphic leeches.

I think the most obvious point to make is how leeches get the blood that they need.

>In most blood-sucking leeches the digestive system starts with the jaws, three blades set at an angle to each other. In feeding they slice their way through the skin of the host, leaving a Y-shaped incision. Behind the blades is the mouth, located ventrally at the anterior end of the body. It leads successively into the pharynx, then the esophagus, the crop, the gizzard, and the intestinum, which ends at the posterior sucker. The crop is a distension of the alimentary canal that functions as an expandable storage compartment. In the crop, some blood-sucking species of leech can store up to five times the body mass of blood.
>>
I think that leech society would need a steady amount of blood.

If a full-grown leech "man" is 300lbs, that means it needs 1500 lbs of blood to reach full satiety.

The idea that I'm getting is a species that live in a moist area, like maybe a swamp.
>>
> Of the 32 segments within the body, the first four anterior segments are designated as head segments, which include an anterior brain and sucker. This is followed by 21 midbody segments, which include 21 neuronal ganglia, two reproductive organs, and 9 pairs of testes. Finally, the last seven segments are fused to form the animal's tail sucker, as well as its posterior brain. The leech also has 32 brains because a brain segment is located in each segmentation of the body

>32 brains

Oh my God, leeches are geniuses!

The Swiss need gold, though. Leeches need blood.

Plus, just like the moths and flies, this is an opportunity to create a unique culture that isn't a parallel to human society.
>>
>>39418400
Body volume and energy consumption do not scale the same way. A larger animal needs less food per unit bodyweight than a smaller one.

Still, if bloodsucking is to be theme, then excessive growth would nonetheless be a problem. They'd need tons of blood to actually sustain a society, and not just individuals. What could work is a society of aquatic leeches, maybe child-sized, that herds whales.
>>
>>39418546

There are sea leeches, wouldn't herding whales put them far away from normal societal interaction?

I imagine that there'd be less trade. Unless there are mermaids, I guess.
>>
They're slavers, in order to maintain the necessity of fresh, plentiful blood, they need host species.
>>
>>39418476
>We exist. We're called the Swiss
>not Jews
teej, pls
>>
>>39418574
How so? They could create great pens made out of nets in which to keep the whales, so there's no need to be nomads. Hell, this would even allow them to have land-based coastal settlements and only ranch in the seas.
As for trade, most of the usual goods are possible. In terms of foods, they might trade spices and huge vats of different types of blood from different species (for the taste).
>>
>>39418618

Well, that definitely puts "going to work" in a different context.

>>39418584

That is possible, but I think that in a mass to mass ratio, that might be inefficient.
>>
Why not a symbiotic race? Hear me out. The size of small dogs, they secrete beneficial bacteria into it's host, increasing their influence through super-charged pheromones and brain activity. Now, they do this for x amount of years, going into a hibernation-like state of feeding. During this time they stockpile the blood they make, so that for every year they remain attached they get x years worth of blood for normal activities.
>>
Since leeches are hermaphrodites, I don't think there'd be gender discrimination.

So how doe leeches make families? Do they need that? Communal rearing? Leaving the young to die or fend for themselves?
>>
>>39418546
Why not just live on whales?
>>
>>39418678

I'd be fine with that, but right now, this is the really rough, bare-bones fleshing out part, so we'll see how all these different ideas stick.
>>
>>39418721
That's all it is for now, just an idea. I just gave it some fluff for why hosts would agree to the symbiosis.

What about a parasite leech that uses humanoid races to be able to deal with the environment?

It sneak into the bedroom of an elf, attaches itself to the back of his neck and assumes control over the body. A full society of leeches would have breeding farms of hosts for the new leeches to attach to.

>>
>>39419930
Leeches aren't fully parasitic, though. While many do suck blood from larger creatures, they don't permanently live on/in said creatures, and many leeches do actually hunt for prey (worms, insects, even small fish).

Feeding the whales will be troublesome. Krill eaters will probably require outright preposterously large pens (possibly large enough for our leeches to be nomadic in), and getting all the fish/squid/whatever for the rest...

It isn't for nothing that none of the main livestock we humans have kept for food are purely carnivorous.
>>

>>

Are we opposed to making them a "bad guy" race?
>>
>>39420355

I'm not opposed to making them into an evil race, but that sounds more like a serpent to me.

I think that something that is more likely is a way to farm their blood, like a vampire, or a farmer.

If we want to go down an evil route, I could see the possibility of capturing people and putting them into pods and drinking their blood whenever they want, sort of like the Killer Klowns from outer space.

How about a parasitic body horror idea? Like maybe something along the lines of:

>Ability Scores
+2 Str, +2 Cha, -2 Dex
>Size
Medium
>Type
Aberration
>Base Speed
30 ft.
>Languages
Starts with Common and Aklo
Members with high intelligence scores can also learn Elven, Undercommon, Halfing, Gnome, Dwarven, Goblin, or Orcish

>Offensive Racial Traits
Barbed Tongue:
Secondary attack, 1d3, creatures hit cannot move more than 10 ft. away and take a -2 to AC. Tongue can be removed by making an opposing strength check or dealing 2 pts of damage to the tongue (AC 11, does not reduce leech's hp). Leech cannot move more than 10 ft. away from a creature it has attached to its tongue but may release its tongue as a free action. A leech may only have one creature attached to its tongue at a time.

>Defensive Racial Traits
Immortal:
Leeches do not age naturally and cannot die of old age. While some might come into being at age categories other than adulthood, they never leave their original age category. Spells and effects that cause aging affect a leeches as normal.

>Feat and Skill Racial Traits
Integrated:
+1 to Bluff, Disguise and Knowledge (Local) checks.

>Magical Racial Traits
Implant parasite:
As a full round action, a leech dislodge and expel its tongue. If placed within a recently deceased corpse and left undisturbed for 2d6 days, the tongue accustoms itself to the new host body and grows into a healthy duplicate, save that the racial statistics of the body are replaced by that of the original leech upon growth. Once a leech expels its tongue, it gains 1 negative level and the original host body dies as soon as it begins to accustom itself. This host body replaces the original host.

>Senses Racial Traits
Darkvision 60 ft.

>Blood Drinker
Prerequisite: Leech
Benefit:
Choose one humanoid subtype, such as “goblinoid” (this subtype cannot be “leech”). You have acquired a taste for the blood of creatures with this subtype. Whenever you drink fresh blood from such a creature, you gain 5 temporary hit points and a +1 bonus on checks and saves based on Constitution. The effects last 1 hour. If you feed multiple times, you continue to gain hit points to a maximum of 5 temporary hit points for every three Hit Dice you have, but the +1 bonus on Constitution-based skill checks and saving throws do not stack.

Normally, you can only drink blood from an opponent who is helpless, grappled, paralyzed, pinned, unconscious, or similarly disabled. If you have a bite attack, you can drink blood automatically as part of your bite attack; otherwise, you must first cut your target by dealing 1 hit point of damage with a slashing or piercing weapon (though you may feed upon a creature with severe wounds or a bleed effect without cutting it first). Once you cut the target, you can drink from its wound as a standard action. Drinking blood deals 2 points of Constitution damage to the creature you feed upon. The blood must come from a living creature of the specified humanoid subtype. It cannot come from a dead or summoned creature. Feeding on unwilling intelligent creatures is an evil act.

Whales live in salf water, which is kind of bad for leeches (semi-permeable skin, and all. Messes up their internal chemical balance). Not like there aren't plent of creatures on land that would be big enough for them to feed on. A cow or something would probably provide one with enough food to last for a year.

Then again, their cattle needs to eat something to so cities are probably right out.

Going with the hibernation idea that has been thrown around though, leeches could have active phases (for feeding, maybe combined with raiding or warfare) during which they glut themselves on blood and passive phases during which they are barely active.

Going with multiple brains, maybe during each phase a different set of brains is in control, leading to changes in personality and aggressiveness.

Maybe that would be precisely why they would sacrifice blood, because it's so important. Yearly, their civilizations should have a Blood Bath with their excess reserves, or something to that effect. Their god is a sort of astral/cosmic leech that feeds off the essence of the universe, and they offer their blood to him to keep him from drawing from their energies.

That kinda goes in the dangerous direction of making everything about blood because leeches drink blood, like in Vampire: The Masquerade where the term is kinda overused.

How about the leech gained divinity through drinking the blood of a dying god, (Don't know which god or goddess though. I still like the idea of a cosmic leech. Perhaps the leech people are its chosen race, and by settling the earth and spreading forth they satisfy the cosmic leech's hunger? In some way the blood that they consume helps to aid their deity at least in their belief system.
>>
>>39426004

Well, there could be the possibility that the leech "god" isn't exactly God, but is feeding off the world anyway, and that way the leech god doesn't need to go into fisticuffs with other gods.

they herd ginat swamp elefants.
said elefants are too fat to move and are fed manualy by leaches.

The life of such creatures is sad as they are stuck in one place sticked with tubes that continuesly pump blood out of them.

Also I believe leeaches should have dealings with vampires or vampires living among them. Or a vampire that rules their society from the shadwos.

I could see leech-people quite happily becoming vampires. They already drink blood and dislike sunlight, so nothing really changes other than the various benefits of immortality. and sometimes in time of war they pump said toads with combat drugs and ride them into battle.
The earth tremble each time such a creature jumps.

SO much expercise usauly snpas bones and kills the Toad after battle so Hirudo uses them only in case of grave danger.
>>
>>39421950
Make it ritual since to make them a socioty the need to DO things rather then BE things.

The wasteful Hirudo are killers, drinking their fill and letting their pray bleed out.

The civilized Hirudo understand the the cycle of blood, and the need for it to remain in the Bottomless Vessels the gods provided for your feasts. (the "Bottomless Vessels" being blooded animals)

so Hirudo Clerics would have Pouches of coagulant powders and salves for food preparations, and just happen to be praised for their healing powers among non-leech society.

it was a race of toads breed so big by Hirudo (Hirudo sounds too japanese, and i studied latin so i should know how latin sounds. Strange)

They started from human sized toads that could jump normaly, and after slective breeding we have elephant sized toads. They can hardly move and procure food for themselves.

Hell take pitbuuls, they can't even give birth without human assistance. (totaly impractical animal breed by humans)
>>
>>39428409
Also on the vampire angle, since they are blood drinkers I would see a Leech society being deathly afraid of vampires and constantly dealing with accusations from other societies of being vampires.

a vampire Leech can operate alongside everyone else without you knowing. they spend more time active at night then not but that's not that unusualthough.

Signs that someone is a vampire might be their food naturally clots, since as a corpse it stops generating the anti-coagulants.

So ive thought of a few classes/casts that might be found in a Hirudo city/village

Vessel Keepers - Herder Monks, that maintain the Giant Toads and other large marsh/swamp adjacent ruminants for food.
Hirudo Vigilant - Guards/Ecclesiastic Police, Making sure people follow the rites and don't kill all the food and basic law and order.

>>39425863
On the topic of the leech god, as they gain their abilities to use magic temporarily from drinking from magical beings, the Hirudo "God" would be a cunning yet foolhardy Hirudo who latched onto a goddess while she was bathing, creating a realm for his people with the siphoned power but as the blood weakened so did the god and it is now a fairly miner divine plane where the spirits of the fallen Hirudo go to their rest. The realm maintained through ancestor worship, while the divine blood has long since dried been used up.
>>
>>39428713
But it doesn't make sense.
If they can already breed giant toads from regular-size ones, why would they use them as both livestock and battlemounts, especially when they use them as battlemounts they will die.
It's incredibly inneficent.
Again, if they can breed giant toads, they can certainly breed done sort of livestock animal to survive in the swamps, and have giant toads as mounts.
Hell, you could have one strain of giant toads as battle mounts and another as livestock.

true but what fun is in that?

If you want an explanation...
They go to war rarely so they never felt the need to breed battletoads. Once during an attack on the city when all seemed lost a young Hirudo freed a captive toad and unleashed him on enemies.

So leeches know that in theory they could use their toads as a last resort but don't really want to do it.

Also tbreeding a race of animals that big takes a century so you want breed battle toads unless you have a constant need for centuries.

Well, one suggestion earlier was to have passive and aggressive periods where some brains would be working while others would be "sleeping". So that could be a thing.

The lazy answer is that the brain functions are evenly spread out among the 32 brains. Or are redundant organs in case the leech is cut in half.
>>
>>39429882
That is a lot of Butt-mad for one little leech right there.

From their preferred habitat they would definitely be a minor race. Their taste for blood not withstanding they would do everything in their power to not go to war. as they would invariably be on the losing side no matter what. In single combat their natural resilience would win the day, but as soon as a dishonorable opponent flings a bag of salt at the Hirudo suddenly the tide has turned against them once again.

He even says they don't have War Toads, that in a battle someone let one loose and it worked out. so it would be less likely that they would then breed a specific war variant, especially from something so lethargic.

SO here is my take, after first said rampaging toad incident the Toad wranglers have added to their bag of tricks. EngagementTraining. learning what pisses off these lethargic beasts and putting it to use.

Suddenly you have a bunch of Vessel Keepers latched onto elephantine toads poking them with psychotropics and whacking them on the sides with specialized riding crops to direct them into the enemy. As a result these animals used to wet ground and slow movement will probably hurt themselves in this enraged state, picture a Rhino or Elephant leaping 10 feet into the air over and over. The Giant toads will have long since stopped hopping to move normally if they are Elephant large and instead trundle, but the muscle structure and instincts would still be present.

You don't need a new species or breed to make something usable for war, just the need.

People in the leech farming/pet hobby use blood sausages which are (of course) super rare and raw bloody bits of various meat packed into skins. They literally just drop them into the tanks and the leeches latch up sucking it dry. Other leeches like those they raise for bait are few with chunks of raw chicken liver that they eat.

There are in fact saltwater leeches. There is even one that mimics a Seahorse almost perfectly

Swamp Boar like that are aberrations caused by our own finagling. basically domestic Pig escaped and breed with the local boar causing these monsters. at least thats what I last heard when that kid bagged a 900lb.er

How about clothing and armor? Metal or at least metals that degrade from oxidation are a no go. Wood/bamboo mail? Cloth would most likely get to soggy to be practical, so probably sticking with cured hides.

Common in freshwater swamps, sewers, humid jungles and damp caves, this small annelid vampire transfixes prey with its luminous gaze, painlessly saws through flesh with its three opposing tooth plates and bloats to nearly a globe as it messily suctions out blood and entrails. Gluttonous and simple-minded, it seldom takes care to preserve its food sources or moderate its intake, and may even regurgitate in mid-meal to continue feeding until nothing remains. It particularly relishes eyeballs as an "after-dinner snack."

Bogweasel are fond of music, and may attempt to "sing along" to any melody in their territory even while attempting to feed upon its source.

so would that be like... eating a giant scab?

Are our leech folk capable of chewing? or do they have to chase blood cake with some water or blood?

Any Leechfolk requests? I just doodled a few more blood cocktails.

Fire Blend- If it was possible to make fire bleed, this might be the result. Heavily spiced with peppers, cinnamon, and fire salts procured from foreigner mages.

Ice Giant- Cool and refreshing like winterment, a must for a young leech folk on the go. Helps one's breath smell... slightly palatable to other sapient races.

A Vessel Keeper: I was picturing them as ascetic herders, with their herb pouches and and salves to counter their bite during harvesting maybe with a toad or boar?

A Waster: basically a Hirudan who doesn't give a fuck, drain'em dry! Monch them down! Engorge on the lifeblood of any and all!

Thinking about it, what are the traditional classes of Hirudoneans?
Aforementioned Vessel Keepers
Aforementioned Wasters
Spawn Tenders, those who look over the young 'uns

Also, what if blood cakes are made for journeying Hirudoneans? They're just cubes of dried blood right? So to eat them, a Hirudonean only needs a bit of water to dilute a cube, and drink it. Or just pop a blood cube and drink some water.

I've had an idea in my head for Hirudo society. Since blood is their most vital commodity, it can be assumed that whoever controls the most amount of blood is the most powerful.

It goes without saying that there are going to be leeches with more blood than others. I think that these wealthy leeches can lease their cow/frog/whale whatever they use to drink blood in exchange for favors or goods.
>>
>>39438228
Looks like something that is a warrior or a Hirudan that went berzerk and wanted to eat more blood.
>>
>>39438228

It does, but I think that looks like a pre-feeding one.

I actually see this conflict as the most driving issue in their society. If a waster binges on blood and gets too full to do anything, they're a drain to their society since it is (leech)manpower that is being spent by hibernation.

The life of a waster would be feast and famine, since I doubt any leech would want to do business with someone that has no self-control.
>>
>>39438257
they just taste so good.

Speaking of warriors, how would the military or martial members of this society work? What purpose or function they serve?

Do they have to fight other tribes or states for resources? Do they have to hunt for other sentients or animals to harvest? Or are they defensive in nature, having to deal with their negative rap as blood suckers and warding off crusaders?
>>
>>39438322

First of all, I think that projectile weapons should be the natural focus of the leeches, since they can spit on their ammo, and make their enemies bleed out . Of course, they can do the same to their melee weapons, but a volley of hemorrhaging crossbow bolts would be devastating.

Additionally, I think that bellowers from the Harudin choir can rally the troops, and use sonic energy by gathering air in their throats and expelling it.

If Hirudo magic is based off of blood, maybe they can make spells that don't affect a certain bloodline?

Like throwing fireballs into melee that doesn't kill leeches.
>>
>>39438322
I think it would be the second former because they'd need to hunt to harvest blood.

And if they're called blood suckers or something like "WORMPIRES!!" they'd respond "We don't sparkle, we are not vampires"
>>
>>39438396

Why do they need to harvest blood, from humanoids when they can use efficient ranching instead?
>>
>>39418513
They use the term, "Worth it's weight in blood" when talking about value substances and/or murder.
>>
How do they see feeding from sentients? Is it like a taboo delicacy or is blood just blood?
>>
>>39438494

I sort of like the idea of feeders and keepers being explored here. A keeper would rely on their traditional ranching/societal system to get food, so they wouldn't need to go harassing people for blood, since they could possibly indenture themselves to a leech lord for blood in return for service.

I see a waster as a leech that fallen through the cracks of their society, that eats whenever they want, and whatever they want.

Since they'd be outcasts, most demihumans would probably see these monsters the most, draining humanoids dry for a snack.

So the keepers would say that they don't need to prey on sentient, while a waster would value their appetite above all else, and drain sentient if it was convenient.
>>
oh man, I was just letting my imagination wander and realized that entering the Hirudo territory with ill intent would lead to an epic fight. I'm going to do a little writing.
>>
>>39438494
I think it would be a decadent delicasy. Something only considered in the more "well off" areas. While sustainable ranching exists there are leeches in the higher eschelons that go "Yo, I'm tired of frog blood and pig blood, lets try something else". Again this is assuming theres something special or identifiable about blood.

This doesn't mean that the higher ups would hunt sentients down, no that's savage and needlessly cruel, they'd be no better than wasters. But they'd pay top dollar for "Donations" from any adventurer or merchant travelling through their lands.

Might even take blood as a tax for any "outsider"medical care.

This does depend on if blood has a "Taste".
>>
>>39438573
Low frequency bursts slam into you men from every direction, disorienting you, but you press on. You need to find the spawning pool and drive out these monsters out for good, the magistrate wants to begin logging operations in a fortnight. Now you see the enemy, slimy bodies armored in hides coated in patches of marsh grass to blend into their surroundings, but now that you know what to look for your band is ready. They try to drive you back with sling fired shot and light crossbow fire.

You must be getting close you begin to encounter them in had to hand, polished clubs are the order of the day and that damned bellowing. The party sorcerer gets ambushed he was dead weight anyway, burned most of his combat spells on bushes early in the incursion. No matter, Onward, we are almost there.
>>
>>39438627

This is actually a good idea, a toll paid in blood.

In that case, I bet that they're eager for rare humanoids/humanoid offshoots to go through their territory, and those people might be subject to multiple bouts of taxation.

He's filling up a glass cask from a wound. and preparing to "close up" the wound.

Drawing megatoad though lead me to a realization. Aren't toads and frogs predators? wouldn't making huge ones mean there are things with long stickyass tongues the size of elephants, that can eat slithery wormy things that farm them for blood?

Could be an interesting balance frankly. You know you did the blood letting wrong when a CattleToad eats you.

>>
>>39438658

Maybe that's how they build that caste/strata of society up.

Through volunteers that invariably get eaten. Maybe there are a few select families that have been doing it for so long the toads got used to them.

As for the food for toads, that is indeed a conundrum.
>>
>>39420750
technically, leeches shouldn't be anthropomorphic, have families, or really anything mentioned in this thread but fuck everything if common sense is going to stop /tg/ from doing a rehash of an idea that's been done to death before
>>
>>39438640
Ssssssslurp. It is sad that the man (thats what they call themselves yes?) had to die. but they were to close now, the young were in danger, and his arcane blood would empower your defense. Arcane power, unlike the druid who offers jars of his blood in exchange for marsh herbs, its full of aggression and bubbly, also spicy somehow. Tapping into the new found energies you unleash sound, light, and force driving them east... they must go east, or they will find the spawning pools. You hope the ones in the east are ready.

A mage! they had a Mage! that wasn't in the reports. Without the sorcerer you cant face it directly, best to loop around to the east you leave a few men to feign pushing onward, peasant hires, and quickly find the marsh opens up most of the grasses stamped flat and fewer trees. Then that bellowing started up again.

There they were, a dozen well armed Humans wanting to do us harm. you prick the mottled flesh of the great toad right between its eyes, this will inure it to the pain in the task ahead, you see its pupils constrict and feel it shift, now is the time. You Bellow the charge call, and lead the Elite Hirudo, their sashes emblazon with the tribes heraldry. these unmarked ones will feed the honored and their leader shall nourish the young.

The deep rumbling roar of a croak hits your men like a wall of terror as the ten ton monster smashes into the clearing, in two bounds it slams through your men and in its wake a swarm of leech-men their skin tattooed and their battle regalia as ornate as any knight you had seen. you had made an error. these weren't mindless monsters, you had just incurred the wrath of a kingdom! or well... your employer did. You hold up the writ of hire and begin shouting for quarter when the toad comes through on its second pass.
>>
>>39438650
There might be something they'd have to give back, in order to encourage people to cross through their territory.

Either you get paid to bleed your way through Leechman territory, or you bleed instead of pay for anything in Leechlands, saves one on actual gold coin, cheap passage for a money savvy adventurer.

Of course they could always squat on important mountain passes, or set up townships on important trade routes JUST to "tax" people.
>>
>>39421642
Less of a Hive mind, more like the inability to get beheaded. They'll regenerate lost/damaged segments and new brains in time, but meanwhile they keep many copies of the same mind.
I'd also like to propose an alternate species of leech, which would be the standard leech people what ogres are to humans.
While the metabolism of a Hirudo (>>39421462 nice name btw) they have a much larger cousin species that they sometimes live alongside.
These creatures are intelligent ambush predators. They can communicate with their psychic cousins, but their telepathy is not as powerful. But it is useful for hunting.
The Dire Hirudo can detect creatures near it with it's mind, and it's psychic influence makes prey easier to catch.
Otherwise they are not very smart or active, but when they need to they are incredibly strong and swift. They often will attack all out because they can regenerate their wounds after they kill their prey. Unlike the standard Hirudo, the Dire Hirudo do not keep blood slaves, and prefer to swallow their prey whole and spit out the bones afterwards.
>>
>>39438658
Leeches could naturally secrete a slime that is distasteful to the megafrogs so they know not to swallow them up.
>>
>>39438732

Maybe the leeches are neutral ground for trading?
>>
>>39438685
>As for the food for toads, that is indeed a conundrum.
If there are big ass toads, one must assume there are big ass bugs they gotta eat.

Plus they're fat and immobile, which might make them great sentries for their lands. Screw "forcing" toads to hop and attack people. they just sit around waiting for an inattentive bloke in heavy armor and then with a FWIP of a tongue, munch on a knight.
>>
>>39438685
Boars, their blood is gamey, and they breed like mad. Also the boar doesn't need its blood inside it to nourish a toad.
>>
>>39438757
why cant leechmen just be monsters

like, who don't really have an organized society and economics

like we're talking about an asexually reproducing organism here, not exactly an organism which invests a lot of resources into its offspring
>>
What do you think of this idea?

When a Hirudo dies a good and honorable death, the relatives of that Leech render his body down to a liquid state(or just drink his blood).

His blood would "Strengthen" his kindred, and he'd sort of literally gain a symbolic of immortality by becoming part of the clain.
>>
What about blowguns or the like for range weapons for them? They can coat the darts in their anti-coagulant saliva and use their uber lungs to shoot the barbed darts with immense force and precision.

Sniper leeches
>>
>>39429134
Of course they would, but I expect they would rather be inside the toad then riding outside of it.
Most likely inside the mouth, so that it can attack enemies that get swallowed by the toad. A Hirudo would definitely be able to cast a spell or use a weapon while also attached to a giant toad.

>>
>>39438861

>>39437337

How is "waster" status reached?

I have a few ideas.

1.It is proposed as an alternate philosophy to the Keeper lifestyle, a way to be a "real" Hirudo.

2.They are like that from birth

3.Societal/Economic disadvantage tries them to it.

4.The condition is magically imposed, or a curse.
>>
>>39439012
Clacking teeth plates for the more casual/simple intimate display since a mouth lock would intone feeding/aggression/passion.

1 and 3 I think fit best.
magical imposition and birth would be conditions to be treated.
someone mentioned Feeder earlier, maybe that's what they call themselves. Ultimately a Feeder lead tribe would bleed out the pray in a region in short order and then run into and murder sentient races. Races that don't take well to having their blood sucked out and then bleeding out from a wound that wont close.
>>
>>39439138

Don't forget that they'd be spreading disease too, assuming some Waster/Feeder victims survive.

I think the Hirudan would have developed a coagulant they can use on their livestock to prevent bleeding once they're done draining or feeding. Maybe even trade it to the outsiders as a combat medical aid, rapid wound sealing

They would still be leech people not some ravanous monster hunger. they are just inconsiderate resulting in the death of whatever they feed on, stopping the refilling of the bottomless vessels. If they try to drain their fill of a Toadaphant they would swell up right big.

I was think of it like a Dwarf with a mug that never ran dry of booze unless you emptied completely. Aren't there also sentient corgies?
>>
>>39439768
It was a forest, at least the moon worshipers were in the last remnants of a forest that was wild and untamed and had survived the apocalypse or something, most moths lived in a vast desert kingdom. that was once part of the great forest.
>>
>>39439768
My bad, that might have been an early idea for them or something.

We can just shift some aspects of Mothfolk fluff around. They can still be desert dwellers as >>39439808 says, but we'll need to substitute their enmity of dwarves to a bestial underground/mountain race.
We haven't created any burrowing races before, perhaps a race lived beneath the old forests of the Mothfolk, and their destructive habits caused it to become a desert?

D'aw thanks.

But yeah I might turn in for the night. Hope the threads keep going without burning out.

I heard that Uwah in the voice of thsoe floaty head things in Binding of Isaac
>>
>>39439890

I think we can get at least four more threads out of this.

And nice art, again.
>>
>>39439863
Would the beastfolk world have "humanoids" of any sort? Honestly I can see molemen or beaverboys being a kind of industrious burrowing race. But then we sort of reach the same problem humanoid races being parallels for human culture; except that it is beastial races being substitute for common fantasy races.

>>39439902
Thanks again man. Honestly all this talk of crossing over the various homebrew races makes me want to draw "crossover" with the mothfolk and the Miga. But again, another time.
>>
>>39432469
Ok this thread is full of ideas.

Now we just need someone who go through all of those and says what is canon and what is not.

Otherwise it is impossible to go forward.
>>
>>39439981
mole cricket society that lives underground?

Isopods?
>>
Also here is archive of thread

https://archive.moe/tg/thread/39418379/
>>
>>39439984

We should wait until the next thread, and make a strawpoll about what's canon and isn't.

At the end of the second thread, we can write in the results to 1d4chan
>>
>>39440007
I thought that at first, too, but maybe a more social species of burrower, like meerkats?

which tarot cards?
I wanan see
Please?
>>
Leeches for have 30 brains.
THos brains have different uses. Some ar for thinking while others only for storing information.

SO leeches can transfer the information brains between them through surgeery.
as USB drives

>>39440007
Theres something about that creature that makes me think of it as a "cute worker beast" rather than "industrious sentient race". Lets have em in sure, but they don't quite hit the player race chord with me.

>>39440079
They're Historical Tarot Cards from the Cyclops civ. You can find a link to the google doc in one of the archived Cyclops civ threads. Feels weird enough posting art from it.
>>
can leaches have mouthes on their hands?
Please?

It is an awesome attribute and no race I know of has it.
>>
What do they use as money?
>>
>>39438228
i like this. th ebest so far IMHO
>>
>>39440168
I was debating it myself. It might be neat for the more mystic sects of the race. I dunno how much we are between "Magic" and "Science". Hand mouths definitely feel "magic-y".

Maybe they have suckers on their hands? that also help suck blood? not true mouths and not the most efficent way of sucking blood, but capable of it. Or if not blood, sucking magic, again leaning towards the "genetic" lineage stuff.
>>
>>39440187
Barter in blood nigga

Cool
>>
>>39438396
>WORMPIRES
Neat.
I guess this is how othe races call them
>>
>>39440222
I like that blood's simple but still feels like tying food with currency, seems like the first urge/impulse.

That said we've tossed around the idea of because of their diet/currency, it makes em great economic mediators for races that use gold.

Its always cheap to do buisness with a Hirudo if you're a foreigner. No gold, no barter. Just blood. and you walk out of a shop decked in nice clothes and a quart short on blood.
>>
>>39440210
Leeches do have a sucker on their tails, so humanoid leeches could as well have one son their hands. Would also let them cling to surfaces and climb walls.
>>
>>39440281
Well we can always include the medical slant to them. Since they're not mammals and have a number of chemical and bacteria resistances, they can provide medical aid to other races who might suffer shared diseases.
I think that it should be difficult for Hirudo to live in drier environments, so those who are exceptionally sick must travel into the swamp to seek medical aid. The influx of new blood for sick travelers keeps the Hirudo economy afloat.
The Hirudo will cure you of disease and heal you, and afterward they will take blood and store them in pouches. Sort of like a leather waterskin, but instead it's a thin bladder. The basic unit of currency should be a single bag of blood.
>>
>>39440187
I'm gonna crib an idea from the cyclops civ, but why not make their money a byproduct from one of their staple animals?

Ivory Rings from elephants are valuable, they're herded and bread for meat and milk, and their tusks can only be cut off once.

For the Hirudo Leechfolk, what about their Cattletoads? I'd feel like they'd have to live long, and be well taken care of, and if they ever die, they'd have to be 'recycled' of or disposed somehow. Perhaps Toad Bones treated as currency? Sliced into rings and well preserved? What about gizzard stones?
>>
>>39440347
I'm a little opposed to the idea of blood as currency, since it essentially ties their food source into how their purchasing power. If you're starving you're poor. Or you're poor because you're starving. But then again they don't eat "daily" so i guess blood does accrue value that way. They could trade flasks and casks of blood and accrue it for their "big feast" it has value that way, again assuming one doesn't drink it away.
>>
>>39440347
I like the medical bent. I mean Leeches always had that connection to medicine. still kind of crazy that they graduated from medieval pseudomedicine, to actual sorta medicine.

How would Leechian medicine work? They'd have to have some clever ways of "messing" with blood.
Could they change one type of blood into another?

>Wounded soldier walks into a Leechfolk clinic.
>Has Humanblood, all they got is frogblood.
>Do some weird magic crap. basically transmute frog blood into man blood.

Or is that too magical?
>>
So anyone gonna archive this before I attempt it?
>>
>>39440353
I think that they would only need a single good meal per month to get by, give or take a few weeks given size difference between individuals.
I also think it'd be cool if other species would host Hirudo in their towns for the medical aid they can provide, but I think that Hirudo should be a bit too specialized to amphibious lifestyle to be comfortable without a decent amount of water included in their living space.
If a city has working plumbing, you can bet that Hirudo doctors would live there for the sweet access to all that blood.
I bet city leeches would be much fatter than their isolated swamp brothers.
>>39440448
Well maybe interspecies blood magic might be too much, but consider this: Humans have multiple blood types with interrelated compatibility. Maybe the only functional transmuation of blood is not insterspecies but simply making different bloodtypes work between individuals of a same species..
It would be more like alchemy than hoodoo. Since the leechple would not exactly know about bloodtypes, they would at least know that blood can be transfused between individuals, but you have to doctor up the blood so that it's compatible. Basically they can turn any type of blood into "type O" so that it won't make the receiver of the blood transfusion sick.
They might not know the exact science of it, but the Hirudo would use their alchemy to purify blood of disease and make it useful to others.

Ooh, this reminds me a bit of Pangoll lore. The Pangoll's natural enemies are dire termites, could it be that the dire termites are also what caused the loss of forests that the Mothfolk live in, initially?
Termites do need wood.
>>
>>39440551
Good point. Perhaps the Mothfolk blame the Pangolls for driving the dire termites out of the plains and into the forests which caused the termite population to explode in size.
Although the mothfolk blame the pangolls of the desertification of their forest, perhaps it's a cover up?
The mothfolk finally managed to develop a pesticide to exterminate the insects, but it was too powerful, and caused death to too many other species.
I'm just spitballing here

Honestly i like the first half of the idea. Its rife with misunderstandings that snowball into generations long fueds that good history is made of.

Pangolls drove out the dire termites. Dire termites fuck up the mothfolk. Mothfolk hate pangols instead of dwarves. I'm not too sure about the pesticide idea, but it could be a good explanation for the forest being in a sorry state, not much other life than mothfolk and a few other lifeforms. But not enough to pollinate or anything like that.

I'll have to read up on the Pangol lore. to see if there are other synergies.
>>
>>39439710
where can one read up on the pangols? or the homebrewed version of the gnolls?
>>
>>39440678
Check out one of the PDF threads and ask for the Pathfinder Pangoll book. It has all the info on them including stats for Pathfinder if you are so inclined. Pangolls are based on pangolins, but were initially called pangobolds and were an attempt at and armored species of kobolds, I believe. It just became it's own separate thing. They are known for casting the spell "Honey" which is a variant of "Grease"

what a nice toad statue.

Those savage wormpires sure were able to built alot of things back in the day.

*SLURP*
>>
>>39440724
That is the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I wonder how Leechfolk feel about all that thick armor standing between them and what is likely tastey sweet sugary honeyblood.

Honestly I wonder if they'd be amiable?

Would Mothfolk feel antsy travelling through Leechfolk territory? All those giant Bloodfrogs around after all.
>>
>>39438896
leeches had batvision?

Instead of Ultra sounds they emit low frequency sounds to know their surroundings.

They are unable to percieve details with it but gain info on internal consistency of objects.
>>
>>39437371
>>39437532
yeah, consistency is between tofu and jelly, and the taste is just blood with texture. Pretty good stuff, but not so good if leeches can't chew.

>>39440448
see >>39428517
If they obtain a method to feed blood back into a patient, they can "taste" blood for toxins and impurities, removing tainted blood for consumption and putting the rest back.

>>39440547
magic that controls antibody types would also be huge, as blood transfusions were literally gambles before people knew about compatibility between unrelated people.
>>
>>39440033
sounds good to me
>>
>>39440210
if you do a race hands end up being human like or tentacles.

At least with mouthes it would feel a little bit fresher. Also mouth hands are better then tentacles being ablt to get a grip far steadier.
