>ERROR : FILE CORRUP!($U!%NIT)#

>"All men bend to fate. It is what has guided the space-faring cultures of the universe for eons. Gods and religions may come and go, but fate has remained in their wake. Many aspire to follow their fate. Many more aspire to find their fate. But there are those who desire to defy it."
>"These brave souls, these men and women who would change the very stars in the sky, seek power. Of those who want a new destiny, so very few of them have even a minute chance."
>"Now, you all may bear witness to the birthing of one such soul. One who has the power to grasp at the hand of fate."

>"All that is needed is for you to rise. Rise up, and grasp the will to power."

> - Great King Skiev, A.D. 0 (The End of the Tyhran Revolt)

You are Skar, one of the Silithid people of the outer ring worlds. Your people are a bipedal, reptilian race that believes in reincarnation and the life-path of the soul. In a previous life, your soul-ancestor was one who saved others. To honor him and to follow his life-path, you have taken your Life Journey to the stars, signing up with a Union mercenary ship that was passing by your sector. Since then, you have fought side by side, putting your talents to good use under the watchful (if not obsessive) gaze of the enigmatic CO. Recently, he has assigned you to Bullseye Squad, one of the toughest parts of his military group; in this squad, you are expected to perform to a standard of quality that outranks your previous battles by leaps and bounds. If you were not confident in your healing abilities, you would be nervous, but the CO hired you for a reason.

Right now, none of this has any importance to you. What is important is the small set of cups that are being shuffled around. You are sitting in front of your squad's Demoman, trying to watch his shifting hands while the both of you wait for your next mission to begin. He challenged you to a game of shells - a time-honored tradition in many cultures - and you did not want to be rude. "Yeh daft lizard, yeh cannae keep oop with th' slick hand o' Deimos, eh?" He chuckles. The cups are moving at a quick clip, darting this way and that to try and distract you...

Unlike most other cultures, the Silithid have evolved to compute basic patterns quite easily. Probably something to do with the early stages of your people's development as reptiles. You stop focusing on the cups and start watching his hands, making mental notes as to how he's twisting his wrist every now and then. He also seems to favor leaning to his left, but it's a feint - his head is tilted toward the right. With that in mind...

Your opponent stops his cup-shuffling, hands hovering right above the left and right cups. "Och, yer a silent one, ain't yeh, Forktongue? But yeh cannae work yer sneaky lizard magic on me lucky hands, lad. Hasn't failed me yet, they haven't." Ignoring the man's speech, you squint your narrow eyes, hissing slightly as you lick at the front of your muzzle. Yes, there was no doubt.

"This one knows your tricks, wire-man. This one knows there is no item within the containers. As the winged beast flies, your item resides in the wrist of your clothing." You hiss. Reaching over to his wrist, a claw pops open the folded cuff of one of his sleeves. A quick glint catches your eye, but he turns his wrist over before you can get a good look. "Ach, lucky guess, ya damned beast. Yeh only oop an' watched me try it on th' new lassie! So. Another game, then?" He asks.

While you could go for another game, there were more important things going on. The Captain was making his approach, walking in on taloned feet.

"Fall in, Bullseye Squad. Our next mission is coming up." He squawked, mixing a beady gaze with a stern posture. "We're approaching the planet of Tyhra, now. It's a greasy little mudball that's going through a revolt right now by the two largest forces on their world. We got work coming in from one of those factions - seems like they want us to get some special item from a secret lab near their smaller land-mass. Normally, I wouldn't set up our A-lister team for a milk run like this, but you never know, with these missions. These gravvers don't know how to fight, but they outnumber us ten to one. Even if we have the element of surprise, this'll be a tough mission. I want us all to stay on our toes. Prep up your frames and equipment, and get ready for planetfall in fifteen minutes."

Everyone respected the commander. He wasn't the stereotypical captain that voiders dreamed of, but something about his stern, rugged charm drew others in. It was an interesting sight to see. Then again, it may have also had something to do with all of the trinkets that he had collected over the years. A man who has something to believe in - even something as silly as the power of fate and the power of the fallen - is a man who can be followed to death. You and the rest of the crew salute him, and he salutes back before dismissing you.

Well, now you've got a bit of downtime before getting into your Orbital Frame. Perhaps it's a good time to check on Diaochan now. Then again, as the medic, your top priority should be your medical equipment and other supplies. You may have to ensure that your equipment is good enough to secure the life-paths of your equals. Beyond that, checking on your squad would be a good thing to do. Other than physical health, their mental health is a grave risk in high-tension missions like these.

In battle, a man is as good as his equipment, and vice versa. You may be as good as your previous incarnations in terms of combat capability, but you would be nothing if not for your Orbital Frame, Diaochan. You resolve to examine the mech, for now. Walking around the large hangar that was the IVC's home base, you locate her sitting close to the left wall. She was as beautiful as the day you inherited her, if not more deadly from the battles that she has faced.

Diaochan was a Nephtis-Model machine from one of the inner-ring worlds, with a bit of Silithid flare to her. Instead of the usual HALO propulsion system, the mechanic has modded her to contain a minor cloaking field, instead. Perfect for a sneaking snake, she probably thought. Racist. Other than that, it was a completely basic model; there was nothing else done to her shoulder-mounted line guns or her twin katar blades. The only touch you weren't all too fond of was the literal cock pit, but that didn't bother you so much any more. All the more useful for when enemies think that you're piloting from the upper head.

There wasn't much you could do to tune up the mech, honestly. Not from the outside, at least. Leaping up, you jump into the piloting chamber and settle in. Much like the outside, the inner cockpit was sleek, efficient, and deadly. The dashboard was adjusted to fit your more reptilian body shape, but was otherwise stock-brand. Movement was based on the two trackballs to your left and right, along with the boot-inserts that were near your hind legs.

For now, you could check on Diaochan's equipment and see what, exactly, she was capable of. Never hurts to review it, after all. Or perhaps a bit of AI configuration would do? Something to better suit your work as the medic?

The biggest problem, beyond the whole bit with your legs not quite fitting the leg equivalents of Diaochan, was the AI. This Frame was a beauty to behold, but it had one major flaw - the AI was buggy. You had been putting it off until now, since you don't quite have the head for technology that your mechanic does, but it's high time you actually got around to installing a better AI. Your current one seemed like it was some offbrand model, which kept on calling you 'hacker'.

Luckily, you had foreseen such a problem coming up, and had planned accordingly. A prior meeting with the mechanic had gained you a few options as to replacements, and she was even kind enough to lay them out as computer blocks on your dash board. If you remember right, her words were something along the lines of...

"Alright, clean out your fucking ears and listen up. Your wanzer's a pretty bitch on the outside, but she's been fucked up by third-party software on the inside. You wanted me to replace that shit, so I got you four AIs that I had to download and clean out on my own time. By the way? Fuck you for making me take my free hours on this shit. Anyway, the first AI is called 'ZhugeLiang.bat'. This'll increase your computational speed for number-crunching subroutines and readouts by a shit-ton. It's good for a lot of tactics shit, so you might want to get that. The problem is that this AI is chatty as fuck, so you might wanna beware that shit."

"Next up - Viola.bat. This one's meant more for combat wanzers, but since you've got those fuck-off katana shits on Diaochan's hips there, you'll probably get a kick out of this shit. It's pretty fucking violent, but it should help with action/reaction times on your wanzer. If you wanna fuck shit up, you go with that."

1/?
>>
>>39432566

"Then there's this radio one called 'Codec.bat'. Good for short- and long-range communication, since it increases the signal boost from your shit. There's a few reports that your outgoing messages might get caught by the enemy if they tune to the right wave frequency, though. It's not secure, but if you're doing sneaking and shit, it'll help you listen in if we're fucking around."

"Last but not least is this bland-as-balls AI that I got. It doesn't have a personality, so it won't get in the way when you try to do anything. Problem is that it also doesn't help much in terms of comp speed or action-reaction times, so you'll have to work on your own shit for that. It's what I'm running right now, if that helps."

The four boxes were laid out in the order that she had listed them in. All you had to do was place them in the AI slot right underneath the dashboard after taking out that defective one, and Diaochan would install the rest. Each has a strength and a drawback, and you don't have the time to install one on the battlefield. The AI that you pick now would be the one that you're stuck with...

>Please choose an AI.
>ZhugeLiang.bat? (Tactical output increased, but also more difficult to decipher.)
>Viola.bat? (Combat capabilities increased, but also hard to reign once battle starts.)
>Codec.bat? (Communications capabilities increased, but may be heard by the enemy.)

The tactical AI should help you with both managing the team's personal health and getting a good read of the battlefield. Sure, it would be chatty, but a mute button could fix things like that easily.

You reach down underneath the dashboard, sticking your serpentine fingers into the computational slot. Yanking out the old box, you shove the new one in its place quickly, pushing it in until you hear the small 'click' of latches securing the box in place. After that, you take a moment to put aside the other comp boxes before activating your dashboard.

"Uploading new AI... Spring rises from the earth / the young chick takes flight into the blue sky / from the ashes rises the phoenix." Various graphs and charts spring up on screen! It's a barrage of information, detailing every scrap of data that has been inserted into the Orbital Frame since it was built. From battle damage to connection with other AIs, weapons and equipment, medical records and psych traits that you had listed for the squad; everything was being measured and sorted! For a moment, you considered shutting Diaochan off and calling for help...

Just as quickly as it began, the rush of the AI's bootup stopped. One by one, each graph and chart blipped out of existence, leaving only one window open on your view screen. It was the small poem that had appeared when all this started. As you looked, the words shifted, morphing into a new poem. "A battlefield surveyed is a battlefield conquered / the arrow flies only as far as the hand pulling it."

Alarm klaxons begin to blear up from above. From one side of your viewscreen, you can see the CO rushing out of the living quarters and yelling out orders. It looks like it's time to suit up. A hiss from your radio confirms this, as the captain's avian voice calls in. "Skar! Good work on warming your Frame up! We're making landfall in one minute! Get yourself ready and head over to the HALO Jump point - we're going to be making planetfall soon!" How odd. Normally, there would be a dropship involved.

You would like to move your mech, but the boot-up system of your AI is commandeering control of the whole system. "Ambition, charisma and wisdom, in equal measure / wielded by great generals, may create swords from plowshares." As nice as these poems are, they aren't really helping you move! Maybe the poems are waiting for you to do something?

There's an obvious pattern to these writings. They're not exactly good - a little archaic and purple-prose-y for your taste - but they are definitely military poems. But why would the programmer put something like that in? Is this just something that programmers did? In any case, you considered that the best course of action would be to try to respond in kind. Your hands flit over to the keyboard in the center of the dashboard. "This one speaks plainly, but with reverence / the serpent commands the phoenix with the gilded tongue / together, their might shall grasp the reins of ambition."

Whatever the AI's game was, you seem to have cracked it. Your screen clears up, giving you a tactical readout of the scene before you, and your Orbital Frame stands up straight. "Two sages sit at the top of the mountain / with eyes without and within, they control all that they see / one's eyes to the Will of Heaven, and another's eyes to the mandate of Earth. I greet you in plain words, Silithid." The AI actually says this out loud, speaking from your radio box. It has a calm, collected voice, garbled slightly by digitization.

That effort had taken up around forty seconds. You hiss contentedly to yourself, walking over to the edge of the hangar to wait behind the CO. Everyone else was already in line - you were the last to appear. "Prayin' ta yer gods, lad? Ach, worry not. T'is but a wee milk run, this."

"Stow the chatter! We're jumping in ten! Nine! Eight! Seven! Six..."

1/?
>>
>>39434043
The S.S. Iscar was far too large to do anything involving sneaking, so the IVC usually just brought it in and hoped for the best. When the hangar doors began to open up, you were given a view of the landscape from about ten miles off of the ground. Even from here, you could see that there was fighting all over the planet. This didn't seem like some regular revolt. In fact, this resembled something more along the lines of a full-on uprising.

The CO's Frame pointed to a small spot down below. Unlike the other places on the planet, there was no one fighting there. Odd. "Jump now! aim for that spot there!" Before anyone could ask for clarification, he leaped out of the open hangar doors, diving headfirst toward the landing point. The rest of the team hurried to follow him; the gunner, first, then the mechanic, and finally, the demolitions man.

Before you could jump, a loud blip from the AI pops up a warning sign. "The eager prey sees safe haven / yet the smart hunter lays traps underneath bait. Instead of low branches / the wisest of hawks seek a higher perch." It pulled up a closer view of the land below, highlighting what seemed to be a hill formation to the right of the landing zone.

"Medic! Pick up the pace and follow us! We have to hit this place hard and fast!" Your CO screams.

>Options?

I got bad news and not so bad news.

Bad news is that Comcast is acting like a bitch. Internet is acting up, and I'm trying to fix it.

Not so bad news is that everyone gets a 30 minute break while I play self-tech support.
>>
Fixed. Fuck you, Comcast. Fuck you and every shitty internet thingamajig you try to pawn off as 'working'.

Now, as I was saying...

>>39434514
This IS hard mode. Don't worry, this isn't BAD END or anything. It's just...y'know...a bad time.

In any case...

There was a lot of sense in the AI's words. Higher ground would mean that you would have a better view of the battlefield, and a better place from which to make a plan of entry into the lab. Jumping out of the hangar, you spread out your Frame's arms and legs, trying to catch the wind to better angle yourself toward the hill. It really did look strange, now that you had a better view of it. While you barrel down to your new LZ, you turn on the comms. "This One has spotted a better area to begin the mission, Commander. This One shall investigate." You hiss.

"Damn it, Skar...fine. I'm trusting your instincts, for now. Do some quick recon, then radio us with your information." The CO responds, before turning his radio off.

The wind currents on this planet are strong. Much stronger than you expected. You have to fight to control your Frame's light limbs against the wind buffeting it. Even the AI has to put its power into maintaining a good enough angle. The closer you get to the ground, however, the easier it gets. Only two more miles, now. That hill really was a good location. There's even a plateau near the middle, with small -

That's not a regular hill.

Thats not a moon.
>>
>>39435153
"A hunter in a haybale, laid out in the field / when partridge comes to take food, he is ready with bow nocked!" The AI wails, zooming in to look at the figures in the plateau. Upon closer inspection, it seems that you were headed right for a small bed of six turrets, lined up along a small road in rows of three. These turrets were already swiveling upward, aiming right for your Frame! There was no way you could angle yourself away this late into your Jump, and you weren't sure if you could take all of them out without being damaged!

>Options?
>Land as fast as you can, and dodge the bullets that way! (Please roll 1d100 for landing. You will take damage, but at least it won't be as bad.)
>Use your shoulder-mounted turrets and shoot back! (Please roll 1d100 for attacking. You will take damage, but you will also deal damage.)
>Try to curl up in a defensive position, protecting yourself from the worst of it! (Please roll 1d100 for defense.)
>Write In? (Please roll 2d100 for a Catch-All.)

It's certainly a low roll, to be sure.

But that doesn't mean it's the end. There are still chances to survive.

You still have a chance to DEFY FATE.

It's a split so far so can we dynamic entry a turret then run?

If someone either changes their vote or a new vote comes in? Sure.

If not, I'll use the capricious d2. You know how he is.

I also want to say this - I want to keep this fair (well, hard, because Hard mode), but fun. If, at any point in time, you feel that something is bullshit, please raise your concerns.

There was no way you were going to survive this without getting hurt. But there was also no way you were going to allow them to take you down without a fight. Bringing your frame's arms above it's head, you tilt yourself down and aim toward the closest turret, forming yourself into a large projectile. The weight of your landing should be enough to crush the things, even if they're made out of something durable.

The turrets rev up their barrels, firing straight toward you. Either by proper calculation or sheer luck, they're able to trail their bullets in accordance with your trajectory rate. Red warning lights flash from green to yellow to red as the upper body of your Frame is torn asunder. Their fire is so concentrated that it breaks through Diaochan's arms, piercing its upper torso and breaking through the back battery pack.

Your main systems are failing. There are fires erupting all around your Frame. With a loud crash and a violent shaking of the cockpit, you tumble into one of the turrets, crushing it with the whole weight of your body. The other five turrets are not deterred by this loss, and they continue to fire up and down the Orbital Frame. The legs are shot through, then the upper head; the battery pack was already exploding behind you, and it was through a sheer miracle that you hadn't been engulfed in flames, just yet.

1/?
>>
>>39435811
This was it. You were going to die here. There was no way that such advanced turrets would allow you to walk out of this alive, even if you were able to escape your burning cockpit. There was just enough time and just enough power to, hopefully, send a message to the rest of the team.

The heat is starting to get unbearable. There is a sharp, stinging pain coming from behind you. Your people are used to heat, but even a Silithid cannot withstand things like this. Jamming your hand on the radio comms, you scream, "IT IS A TRAP! RUN!"

This is all you can manage before the pain forces your attention. You hiss and growl, writhing as the flames crawl into the cockpit. No matter how hard you try, the sensation of being eaten alive spreads throughout your back, rushing onto your arms and all over your body ancestors save you is your life over you don't want to die you don't want to die nononoaaaaaargh -

Skar's bones crick and lock, the flames taking him and locking his muscles in place. His spirit ascended to the End of the Path seconds before his Frame exploded, spreading metal and viscera all over the hilly plateau.
