You are Giles, Master Thief, confidant extraordinaire, and professional wrestler.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from house guest to escort.

The carriage ride continued with boring books and boring landscapes. Your only reprieve from the maddening dullness was a lesson in swordsmanship from Marcy and a learning experience about magic with Laura.

The real fun began when you attempted to settle in for the night. Your feeling about the mountain road was right, it was a trap.

Though in the end it worked out, as you got the satisfaction of seeing Salem dead, and Laura got her revenge…

The wheels of fate are in motion, but a Devil’s whim is a wrench in their gears.
Do you have what it takes to stop them turning?

“Did you kill all of the people out in the forest alone?” You ask.
“Yes, master. I disposed of them because they posed a threat to you” Kuma says. “And a Brother of the Night is never alone”
“But when I met you in the forest, you surrendered like that” You say, snapping your fingers.

“You caught me off guard. I am unaccustomed to being snuck up on” She says.

Well, you could certainly believe that she could take care of a small number of attackers. Given how she flying slammed that guy and snapped his neck…
Maybe she’d be willing to show you that move, it was pretty cool.

“So if you’re here, does that mean that your Brotherhood is at my disposal now?” You ask.
“No, master. I was sent to ensure your safety. My brethren are currently compiling information for you to use in making your decisions.” She says.

“Can you at least tell me if there’s a good way back up to the road?” You ask.
“Yes master” She says.

And then she pauses… is she pausing to think? Or…

“Tell me a good way to get back up to the road.” You say.
“Just back that way, there’s a series of ledges.” She says. “You could climb it on your own, but I would not attempt it with someone on your back”

So you need to be direct with this one. It’s good that you got that out of the way now…

“And what about the road ahead? Are there any further surprises?” You ask.
“Yes master, I find the mountain vistas surprisingly breathtaking at this time of year. That is just my personal taste, though.” She says.
“Ambushes. Are there more ambushes between here and Harth.” You say.
“No master” She says.

You sigh. So you can’t make it back up if you have to carry Laura…
On the upside, the path to Harth is clear.

“Is there anything else I need to know?” You ask.
“Your legs are bleeding” She says.
“I already knew that” You say.
“Oh. Then no.” She says.

You sigh.
“How will I contact you?” You ask.
“I will be nearby” She says. “Whistle for me when you are alone, and I will come to you”
“Good. Now I need you to make yourself scarce” You say. “As useful as you might be, I’d rather not let everyone know that I hired the assassins that killed the king and queen.”

“But those assassins were killed” She says.
You sigh, and shoo her away. Then you kneel down next to Laura.

“Hey” You say quietly, shaking her shoulder.

Nothing…

“Hey!” You say again. Still nothing.
“HEY!!” Nothing again.

She’s really out cold… You don’t blame her. Even with the Water of Life having closed her wounds, she still lost a good amount of blood from her legs.

You pick up her bow and grab an arrow she has enchanted with blinding flash. You’ve never actually used a bow before, this should be interesting…

You aim it straight up and a little away from the cliff, evoke the enchantment, and fire.

The arrow flies up into the air and bursts into a ball of light at about eye level with the people up top.

After a few seconds, a head pokes over the edge. “Laura, was that you?” Marcy shouts.
“No, Laura’s passed out.” You shout back.
“Giles? Is everything alright down there?” She asks.
“Peachy, up there?”
“We lost a carriage to the flames, but we’re okay otherwise” She says. “Can you guys make it back up?”
“Maybe, I spotted a good spot to climb a ways back. But I don’t think I can make it up until Laura wakes up.” You say.
“We could follow you down there and give you a hand, I’d rather not leave you two down there” Marcy says.

“I’ll head over there then, it’s down that way” You say, pointing off to where Kuma told you the spot was.
“Right, I’ll grab whoever is willing and meet you there!” Marcy says. Then her head disappears behind the slope’s edge.

You take a deep breath and turn to Laura. “Alright you” You say, slipping your arms underneath her and picking her up in a fitting way for a princess. “Let’s get you on up”

You make it about ten feet before you find yourself breathing heavily. It’s not Laura, she isn't even that heavy. The day has taken its toll on you. Even with that nap you took earlier, your eyelids feel heavy.

You feel like you’re about halfway there when Laura finally stirs and opens her eyes.

“Giles?” She asks, rubbing her eyes. “Where are we?”
“The woods below the road. You fell, remember?” You ask.
“Kind of… I remember the fight, and falling… the rest is hazy” She says.

“You must’ve hit your head pretty hard on the way down. We’ll get Marcy to take a look at that when we join back up with them.” You say.

“So what happened?” She asks
“Well first off, you killed Salem” You say.
She looks confused for a second, but then the memory seems to come back to her. “I did…” She says. “I remember that now… When I asked him if I… if I ever meant anything to him… he laughed at me”

Cool your anger Giles, the man is dead. Dead in the most horrific fashion you’ve ever seen.

“He knew that Selene was his, but he still wanted to bring her to the palace to die…” She says.
“And he burned for it.” You say.
“He did?” She asks.
“You shot a tornado of fire through his chest” You say.
“I kind of remember that…” She says. “I remember feeling the heat, and someone screaming…”
“That would have been him” You say.
“So what happened after that?” She asks

“After that you… uhh…” You fumble on this a bit. “Told me that you… love… me…”
Laura’s eyes go wide, and her face turns bright red. “I-… t-t-t-t-t-t-t, y-you…” She stutters, and then tries to wriggle out of your grip.

“Woah, hang on don’t just try to-“ You struggle to stay upright, and fail.

You fall backwards, and Laura lands on top of you.
She moves quickly to try and get off of you, but as she does her eyes meet yours.

She stops breathing, her eyes still wide, and her lower lip trembling just a little. She hangs there for a moment longer than you think she should. Then her eyes close just slightly and she slowly moves in-

“Hey! You guys alright down there?” Someone from above shouts.

Laura gasps and stands up straight as an arrow. “Yes. Yes everything is fine!” She calls back.
“Laura is awake?” Someone else calls out.

You look around at where you are. This looks like the place. You didn’t even notice…

You climb the first shelf, and reach back down to help Laura up. When you go to get up the next one, you find a hand waiting there for you.

“Heads up, kid. Aint much point to us being here if we aren’t helping” Dalen says.
“Thanks” You say, accepting his hand and stepping up.

You find someone waiting for you at every step, and finally Marcy helps you and Laura up the last one.
“Is Melissa okay?” You ask. “The last thing I saw was her carriage catching fire”
“She’s… a little worse for wear.” Marcy says.

“I’m gonna have to ask you to elaborate on that” You say.
“She made it out of the carriage fine, but outside the carriage wasn’t quite the safest place… One of the traitors in our group got a jab in on her.” Marcy says.

“And…?” You ask.
“She’s fine, it was nothing I couldn’t handle. Just… don’t look inside the carriage.” She says.
“Why?”
“Because after she got injured, your sister locked the traitor inside. And left him there while the carriage burned…” Marcy says. “He screamed… quite a bit”

You pick up your walking pace despite how tired you are.

“Woah there, soldier. Where are you off to so fast?” Dalen asks.
“I know you said she’s okay, but I kinda want to see it with my own eyes.” You say.

Marcy is about to say something, but Laura stops her. “Go on, we’ll catch up” She says.

You pick up the pace until you’re moving at a moderate jog, and you make it back to the caravan in a few minutes.

The whole place smells like burnt wood and burnt flesh. The fact that it almost smells good makes you want to retch.

You find Melissa laying in her bedmat by a fire that someone put together, with Eleanor close by. You immediately rush over to her side.

“Hey” You say.
“Giles? Hey.” She says.
“Are you okay?” You ask.
Melissa laughs. “You should see the other guy” She says.
“Please don’t joke right now” You say.

“It’s just that… I fucked up pretty bad.” You say.
“Why do you say that?” She asks.

“I had Salem backed into a corner. I thought I had won, so I got careless and went all in” You say.
“And that’s when he got his shots off” She says.
You nod. “One to light your carriage up, one to send Laura down the cliff.”

“You decided to go after Laura” She says.
“I did. Laura was the one he was after. I knew that if I took his bait and went after you first, then I would be too late to help Laura.” You say.
Melissa smiles. “So you trusted me” She says.
“I had to…” You say.

Melissa pulls you down on top of her and wraps you in a hug. “I think you made the right call.” She says.
You smile and return the embrace from your awkward position. “Thanks…” You say.

She releases you and you sit back down, just in time for everyone else to arrive…

Incidentally, Dalen, Salem got a pretty good hole ripped through him, AND got lit on fire.

Everyone sits down by the fire, and you start with your side of the story. How you fought Salem on the other side of the fog, how he got his shots off and went down the cliff, and then how you followed him and Laura finished him off.

As you tell them the end of the story, Dalen puts an arm around Laura’s back and rubs her arm. “You did good.” He says.

Then Marcellus goes into what happened up here. The fight was going well up until the fire started. Once the fire was lit, several of the people that Melissa brought with her turned their cloaks.

The fight got pretty chaotic from there. Even Dalen admits that he may have skewered a few guys who were on their side.

Their story leaves off on that somber note, and Laura goes off to find where Selene is sleeping. Apparently the little one was so tired that she couldn’t even stay awake to wait for her mommy.

Several others leave as well, leaving just you, Marcy and Dalen by the fire…

“Hell of a night so far” You say.
Marcy laughs. “Let’s just hope we get to relax once we get to Harth” She says.
“At least until the war starts” Dalen says.
“You seem pretty sure that there’s going to be a war” Marcy says.

Dalen shrugs. “I know Roderick, and I know King Julian. Neither men are the type to back down.” He says. “And given that both of them have sizeable armies, I’d say that thousands of Harth and Laust men are about to butt heads.”

“I wish it didn’t have to come to this” Marcy says.
“War’s not so bad. Just try not to end up in the middle while a fight is going on and you’ll come out just fine” Dalen says.
“And finally Sir Dalen reveals his secret to how he survived the war with Delemur” You say jokingly.
Dalen laughs loud enough that you’re afraid he’ll wake someone. “You kiddin’? I live in the middle” He says. “But right now I need to find m’self a spot to sleep. G’night boys. And thanks for lookin’ after Laura, Giles.”

“Don’t mention it” You say.
“No, really. Poor girl’s been through more than even I could take. Killin’ that rat bastard was the right thing to do, but I don’t think it was an easy thing for her. I’m glad you were there so she didn’t have to do it alone” He says.

Dalen leaves, and now it’s just you and Marcy.

“I think Dalen has the right idea. I’m gonna hit the hay too” You say.
“Sleep well Giles” She says.
“Goodnight Marcy” You say.

You have one thing to do before you go to sleep.

You head over to where Melissa is lying, and crouch down next to her. She’s sleeping peacefully, like none of this crazy shit ever happened. It takes more than a little resistance on your part to crawl in beside her and sleep here, but you shake off the urge.

Instead, you put a hand down next to her head to support yourself and lean over to plant a kiss on her forehead.

You fucked up bad today, and that could’ve cost you one of the most important people in your life. It won’t happen again.

You find your bedroll in around the same place where you left it, though it got a bit trampled in the fight. Still, better to have it out here and trampled on than in the carriage and burned.

You shake the dust off of it, lay down, and close your eyes.

>[1/2]
>>
You awaken with the rising sun, and get the distinct feeling that you’re being watched…

Your head shoots up, and meets something hard.

Someone squeaks and falls over somewhere behind you as you clutch your forehead.
“Ow” You say.

“Ahhhh… sorry” Your sort-of assailant says.
You turn around and see Laura, clutching her forehead just like you.
“I was supposed to wake you, but you looked so peaceful…” She says. “I didn’t think you’d get up like that”

You laugh it off. “Don’t worry about it” You say. “But next time, just… feel free to shake me a bit, okay?”
Laura laughs too. “Okay.” She says.

You pick up your bed mat and roll it up.

“Giles, did you actually sleep on that?” Laura asks.
“Yes” You say flatly.
“You should’ve said something, Selene and I had an extra one” She says.
“Your guys were asleep, and it still beat sleeping on the ground” You say.

You finish rolling up your mat and tuck it under one arm. “Come on, let’s go get breakfast” You say.
The two of you walk over to where Eleanor and Cedric have a bunch of your food supplies out.

“Hey Giles” Cedric says.
“Sandwich” Eleanor says, handing you a sandwich.
“Uhh… thank you?” You say.
“Sandwich” Eleanor says, handing Laura a sandwich.
“Thank you Eleanor.” Laura says.
“Melissa wanted to talk to you guys.” Cedric says. “She’s over there by the unburnt carriage”

You take a bite of your sandwich and shrug, heading over to where Melissa is coordinating something with the few remaining people she brought.

>[1/2]
>>
You and Laura finish your breakfast while you wait for Melissa to finish her business. When the people she was talking to leave, she waves you over.

“What’s up?” You ask.
“Seating” Melissa says. “It’s a sad fact, but we’ll be leaving a carriage and few of our wagons behind here.”
“I understand the burnt one, but why the rest?” You ask.
“Because we lost a lot of people last night, and we need about half of what we left Searise with.” She says. “Unfortunately, that means that some of the VIPs are going to have to pile into a wagon”

“Lemme guess, ladies get the carriage, gentlemen in the wagon.” You say.
“That’s the gist of it. But there’s still room enough for 2 more in the carriage, if you wanted to join us. I think you’ve earned some comfort at this point” She says, eyeing your filthy bedroll.

It doesn`t really matter to you, since you`re planning on sleeping for most of the trip anyway, but...

“I’ll take you up on your offer. I think I need more sleep.” You say.
“Good” Melissa says.
Laura smiles slightly.

Why do you feel some tension here? This is not somewhere you should be feeling tension…

You stow your worn bedroll away in the back of the carriage and check around to make sure that everyone is ready to go. Then you go about helping the ladies in.

It’s basically the same set-up as before, but with Eleanor instead of Marcy.

Unfortunately, your books burned with the carriage they were in so you’ll be lacking in entertainment.
On the other hand, you got 3, maybe 4 hours of sleep last night. So before the carriage even starts moving, you lay your head against its side and doze off…

>[1/2]
>>
You awaken again sometime later, only to find that everyone but Eleanor is asleep.

You sit up straight and stretch with a groan.
“Oh, good morning” Eleanor says.
“Hey” You say. “I miss anything important?”
“Not really” She says.
“How long was I out for?” You ask.
“Ummm…” Eleanor looks at her time-teller. “5 hours. We skipped our lunch stop because Melissa wants to be beyond Harth’s border before dusk.”
“That makes sense.” You say.

Don't see why we can't do both.

You should probably check on your legs at some point… You kind of ignored them and went to sleep last night, and then ignored them and went to sleep this morning.

You pull your boots off, and the first thing you notice is that they’re a wreck. The slide down the hill absolutely ruined them. You’ll have to get new ones in Harth…

You pull your pant legs up to get a look at the cuts on your thighs. Like you thought last night, they aren’t that deep.

“Oh my gosh! Are you alright?” Eleanor asks.
“Yeah, probably.” You say. “What about you?”
“Me? I’m fine I guess.” She says. “I look better than you do. You’ve been asleep for a while and you still look tired.”
“You look pretty tired too, why aren’t you asleep like everyone else?” You ask, applying a cloth to your injuries to clean them off.

“I get motion sick pretty easily…” She says. “If I close my eyes for too long like this it’s… not pretty”

Your injury clean, you get a good look at it. It’s already scabbed over, and it doesn’t look like you’ll have to do anything further to it, so you pull your pants back down. Right, your pants are wrecked too…

You need to stop wearing clothes. It’s damn annoying having to repair or replace your stuff every time some asshole decides to poke holes in it…

And then a new Master Thief was named... The Streaker
>>
You and Eleanor chat for a while as the carriage rumbles on towards Harth.

After a few hours, the driver knocks on the wall. Melissa shoots awake at the sound, as the carriage comes to a stop.

“We’re here” Melissa says.
“The capital?” You ask.
“No, we’ve crossed the border. The capital is another hour away, but I told them to stop here for a while so everyone can get ready.” She says.
“Ready?” You ask.
“Presentable. You’re meeting with a king you slob” She says.
You look yourself over. You’re clean for the most part, save for your pants… “Not much I can do about this” You say.

“Then get a replacement pair.” She says.
“From my luggage?” You ask.
“Oh…” Melissa says. “Uhhh”
“You could ask Cedric, I think he might have an extra pair that you could borrow.” Eleanor says. “Or Marcellus, I think he’s about your size…”

“You sure I can’t just wear these?” You ask. “Who knows, from what I’ve heard about King Julian he might appreciate the bloodstains.”

That joke was not appreciated.
You hop out of the carriage and head over to the wagon, before someone decides to tear off your head.

“Hey there Giles, nice of you to join us guys” Dalen says.
“I need pants” You say.
“What? Why?” Marcy asks.
“Because Melissa said that I can’t go to the castle with these” You say.
“You’re probably fine. King Julian would probably appreciate the bloodstains.” Dalen says.
“That’s what I said, but I think that Melissa would rip my head off if I tried to enter the castle like this.”
“Well, don’t look at me. All of my stuff burned up with yours” Marcy says.

“Hang on, I think I’ve got you covered” Cedric says.

You and Cedric head back to the carriage and pull his bags out of the back. He rummages through it for a second before pulling something out.
“There” He says, handing you a pair of pants.
“Thanks, I owe you one” You say.
“You owe me two” he says. “It’s a pair of pants”
“That wasn’t funny and you know it” You say.
“Shut up, it damn well was” He says.

Cedric laughs as he leaves you to change. You take a look around to make sure that no one is watching before quickly swapping out your pants. Then you go back into the carriage.

“There, be-“ You say, then you immediately shut the door and turn around.

You were not the only one getting changed…

You sigh and head over to the men’s wagon. You might as well find a seat, you doubt very much that they’ll be letting you back in the carriage…

We're dead.

>>39479385
at least half of that carriage was happy about it
>>
You make it all the way back to the men’s wagon unscathed, which is a nice deviation from the horrid things your imagination cooked up.

Your lifetime spent going wherever you please seems to have left you with some bad habits, like not knocking before entering a carriage full of young ladies in various stages of undress…

No Giles, don’t think about it. That will only make things awkward.
Even if Laura does have a pretty nice- STOP that… please… No more of that.

You sit down next to Cedric in the men’s wagon without saying anything.

“Welcome back Giles” Marcy says. “They kick you out over there?”

“I may have walked in on something I shouldn’t have” You say.
“Oh Giles, you didn’t…” Marcy says.
“And they kicked you out instead of killing you?” Cedric asks.
“That… has yet to be seen. I did not stick around to see their reaction” You say.

Dalen laughs, and then you hear the signal for the caravan to continue moving.

“Well, this puts off the inevitable for a while at least.” You say.
“I wouldn’t worry. If they were going to say anything, they would have come out and said it” Zen says. “I’m sure they know as well as you that it was an honest mistake”

“Yeah, but that may not stop them from killing me anyway once I’ve outlived my usefulness” You say.

Dalen laughs loudly again and slaps you on the back.

In the distance you think you can barely make out the silhouette of your destination: Castle Harthren.
This will be the first time you’ll be there on an invitation, but it won’t be your first time.

You hope that the King gives you the welcome that everyone thinks he will. He has every reason to be hostile to you right now...

That`s all for tonight. I hope you guys still enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it!

Next thread will be on Thursday. If not Thursday, then I won`t be available to run until next Monday.

Question time tonight will be short, as I am tired as hell.
