You are Kusajishi Riku, Lieutenant of the Second Division of the Court Guard, and you're torn.

As tempting as it is to order Suì Fēng to take dictation for you, there are two problems with that. One, it feels like a good way to make her hate you even more, and two you're not entirely sure what you want to say about your subject. It's a bit difficult, seeing how Okita's death was just a few days ago and it's still fresh in your mind. Also, there's the fact that throughout those five long years you knew everything that was going on in the city of Kyoto, but were both unwilling and unable to use that knowledge. You could have probably changed the outcome of some of the battles just with that knowledge alone, though the outcome of the revolution itself likely wouldn't have changed.

And really, you're not completely unconvinced things won't be better this way.

“I'm heading out,” you declare to your Captain and fellow Commander. “I need some time to think.”

Yoruichi nods thoughtfully. “Be back early, it's sushi night at the barracks. You know how quick the Inari sushi goes.”

Ah, the sweet taste of fried tofu wrapped around rice. You're not sure exactly why you've craved that so much recently, but you love the stuff with a passion. And the threat of having it be gone when you get back... yeah, that's nightmare-fuel.

You leave the barracks, striking out into the Rukongai past one of the gatekeepers... not Jidanbō, though. You're not sure who he was, because when you're running it's sometimes difficult to tell the details like that. But it's when you're running, and doing nothing but running, that your thoughts come to you most easily.

You think you're in the First district, or maybe the second. One of them, at least. Who knows? Who cares, really? It's nicer than where you're from, that much is certain.

Something catches your attention along the road: a young boy and girl, in dirty clothing. The boy is almost alarmingly thin, with a shock of silver hair and narrow, cold eyes. The girl has dirty blonde hair, in both senses, and looks like she's been through the wringer. One thing is clear to you, both of these children possess spiritual pressure not unlike your own when you were still living on the streets.

As you grind to a halt, the boy looks up at you and carefully positions himself in front of the girl. It's hard to tell, but you think he's eying your sword.

It takes a moment for the girl to realize you're there, but when she does she places a hand gently on the boy's shoulder, as if reassuring him that everything's fine.

“Who are you?” she asks quietly. “Are you a Shinigami?”

The boy's eyes never leave you, even for an instant. For one so young to have such focus... it's unusual, to say the least.

“Careful, Rangiku,” he tells her in a voice that immediately puts you off for some reason. “She's strong."

"She is?"

"Amazinly."

“You're right about that, kiddo. More than you know,” you tell the white-haired boy. Somehow, his eyes actually narrow. “But I'm not about to hurt a couple of kids trying to scratch out a living on the street.”

“You're not?” the blonde asks over her friend's shoulders.

You nod. “You both have potential. A lot of it, too. When was the last time you had a decent meal?”

At that moment, the boy's stomach rumbles loudly. “Been awhile, actully,” he admits in what you think is a Kansai accent. “Who're you, exactly?”

“Lieutenant Kusajishi Riku, Second Division.”

“Kusajishi?” the girl asks. “Like, the district?”

“Riku?” the boy asks. “Ain't that a boy's name?”

“It's a girl's name too!” you insist indignantly. “It's what they called me there, cause they coudn't...”

“Yes?” the boy presses with a grin.

“You want food or not?” you snap.

The boy waves dismissively. “Fine, fine. It's real nice of ya, so I'll play nice too.”

“Gin,” the girl frowns. “You haven't introduced yourself. I'm Matsumoto Rangiku.”

“An' I'm Ichimaru Gin,” the boy adds.

You take the two hungry children to the nearest restaurant, which happens to specialize in grilled eel. Not your favorite food in the world, but they also have tofu dishes for people who can't eat meat for religious reasons. Kind of posh that they can make that allowance, but you're not inclined to complain.

The owner looks over the kids with some obvious disdain, but your uniform (and more importantly your badge) mean he practically falls over himself to serve your little group despite it. It also helps that you've ordered a bit of everything.

“This is pretty good,” Rangiku offers as she digs into her meal. “Thanks, ma'am.”

You shrug, taking out a notepad to try jotting down some of your thoughts on paper. “No problem.”

“Yer handwritin' sucks,” Gin observes in-between bites. “Guess ya really did grow up in tha outer Rukongai, didn'tcha?”

“That's what I said, wasn't it?” you reply casually. “Why would I lie?”

“Dunno,” he shrugs. “Why wouldja feed a couplea street rats like this?”

Saying shit like it is doesn't mean we're treating them like tools. It's just being blunt. The more honey we try to use to get them to agree the more suspicious Gin is going to get from the vibe he's been giving off.

You're projecting really hard m8.

Since you put it that way.

I suppose we can lead off with pointing out how Gin is being very protective of Rangiku. If he's the kind of kid that wants to earn his strength to protect someone else, then the Academy is an opportunity for it.

As for Rangiku... eh... fish for more conversational topics I guess.
Though there's also the angle that she might not want to be a burden to Gin or something. Kinda seems seedy to use that card though.

Just waiting for the next scene man. Don't construe it as other players not caring.

He's hungry, defenseless and his friend is obvioulsy pretty beat up/ worn out. He has plenty of reasons to take an open hand for a stable place to build up his strength. The mistake you're making is thinking we can get Gin to trust us in under a decade.

“You remind me of how I used to be,” you admit, still working on your writing: albeit at a slower pace now. “Then a Shinigami, who's become someone important to me, swept in and offered to train me. She changed my life.”

“An' you want us ta be Shinigami?” he asks rather pointedly. Rangiku looks up from her meal and swallows, watching you carefully.

You shake your head. “I don't want you to do anything. All I can do is make the offer. If your feet are half as fast as your mouth, I think you'll be good at it, kid.”

“Whaddya even know about us?” the boy demands, as Rangiku begins to look uncomfortable. “Why would you care?”

“Like I said,” you explain. “You remind me of myself. You have more reiatsu than your life here can support, and from what I can tell you two look out for each other. That's good. Shows you've got compassion, and that you want to protect something.”

Rangiku nods quietly. “Although, Gin does most of the protecting, it seems.”

“You're young,” you continue. “Maybe a few years too young to enroll in the Academy. But I'd be willing to help, if you choose that path.”

“Will it be hard?” Rangiku asks as Gin sits in contemplative silence.

You give her an honest smile. “I won't lie to you, it was really hard. But it helped me find the power to control my own life, and to protect the things I care about. So I think it was worth it.”

“You don't have to give me an answer right now. Just... think about it, you know?”

"When the student's ready, the master'll appear, is it?" Gin mutters. "I'll... think about it, miss."

Rangiku seems satisfied with that answer, though it seems she's a lot more trusting of you than her friend is. In fact, you're fairly sure you've already told her everything she needs to hear.

Really it's just Gin, who seems to have appreciated your honesty even if it didn't win him over outright.

"If you have to find me," you tell them when the meal is finished, "I'll be in the Second Division barracks. Just ask around and drop my name."

As you leave the restaurant, finally getting to work on the article, you notice that you're being followed. Not content to simply consider your offer, it seems the silver-haired boy wants to see you in action.

Alright, that's fine.

Well, may as well do your rounds now, get it out of the way.

You head out towards the outer Rukongai, carefully stringing the kids along behind you as you go and still scrawling your notes in your little notebook. You think you've got a way to explain Hijikata just right when you notice Rangiku falling behind.

“If you're gonna follow me,” you tell them, using hirenkyaku to backtrack, “you might as well ride on my shoulders. Otherwise you'll just slow me down, and that's no fun for anyone.”

Gin looks at you skeptically, but he and Rangiku both climb onto your shoulders as you dash from rooftop to rooftop. The blonde girl squeals in fear and disorientation while the boy remains silent, though from the way his grip tightens you can tell he's not just unusually brave. No, he's just quietly peeing his proverbial pants... thankfully it's not literal.

Finally you see a disturbance: in one of the 78 districts there's been a Hollow incursion, which you just happen to stumble onto. You set the kids aside and go to work.

“A Shinigami!” one of the locals cheers. “Look, everyone! A Shinigamis' come to help...”

And then you start to fight. Against such weak Hollows you don't even have to draw your sword. Hell, you don't even stop writing while you kick, stomp, and elbow the intruders to death. Masks crack as you jot down a few of the poems Hijikata wrote under his pen-name of “Hōgyoku”, limbs shatter as you recount Sano's failed attempt at suicide, and by the time you've dropped your fifth or sixth Hollow you think you've got the makings of a good article. It shows the Shinsengumi for who they really were: complicated and often contradictory individuals, not the legendary, brutal killers they're already being painted as.

“Thank you so much!” someone who looks like a village headman prostrates himself in front of you. "We are all in your debt, ma'am."

You shrug, blowing on the ink to dry the last page. “It was no trouble. And quit with the bowing, you're makin' me uncomfortable.”

“So?” you ask, approaching the stunned pair of children. “What'd you think?”

“Yer sayin' the Academy madja that strong?” Gin asks, his eyes actually showing brilliantly blue irises for once as he stares at you in shock.

You shrug. “I'm saying I always had that strength, and someone helped me find it. I'm willing to put you on a similar path, if you want it.”

Gin nods. “Will I be able to change the world, you reckon?”

“Depends on how strong you are,” you admit, “and what you want to change.”

“What he wants to change?” Rangiku asks. “Why does that...”

“I wanna make a world where Rangiku doesn't hafta worry, or be afraid of nothin',” Gin interrupts.

“Sounds like a nice world to me, but still... there's a saying in the west,” you reply quietly. “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. You've got a real noble goal there, better than most. But be sure not to lose sight of it and take things too far.”

“Also, isn't that kinda circular? Even if you do change the world, I think Rangiku's gonna worry about you.”

Gin seems to ponder the thought carefully, though you can't be too sure exactly what he's thinking.

“And you, Rangiku? What do you want?”

“Hm?” the blonde girl perks up, having heard her name. “What do I want?”

You nod silently.

“Well, I guess what I want... is to be strong enough so Gin won't have to look out for me,” she replies. “If I can't get that far, I'll never be able to have noble goals of my own anyway, right?”

That's definitely true. Is it because they're kids that they see things so clearly? That they have such lofty goals? What is it about the noble houses and the “adult” Shinigami that makes them lose touch with that?

“Well then, I guess there's one thing left.”

It takes you a while to return to the barracks with Gin and Rangiku in tow, and by the time you arrive it's well after sushi night has ended. You get the unconscious girl and the dozing boy situated for the night with a pair of spare futons, leaving your room fairly cramped but still with enough room to maneuver. A knock signals your Captain's arrival.

“Come in,” you mutter, trying not to wake the kids.

Yoruichi's apparently saved a platter of Inari sushi for you, along with some fish... but she pauses as she notices your new roommates. A devilish grin tugs at her lips.

“So, Riku. Who's the father?”

Really appreciate the thread run dude.

I was especially impressed with how you handled the kidou combat earlier, so I guess those suggestions I'm thinking of to make them enticing to vote is gonna be shelved. I can rest easy on that end.

Also really liked the write-in handling for Gin and Rangiku. Got me feeling that sigh of satisfaction after reading the ending of a book's climax.

And as a token of appreciation, I've started doing a thing. Hoping to make some good progress on it, even if it's sorta basic and roughshod right now. It's just a heads to to let you know fanart is on the way.

I'm kind of curious about just how improbable it was for us to run into Gin and Rangiku. Was Zaraki a possibility?
>>
>>39538101
Yeah, I was curious if we could get pastebins on characters we know well or have spied enough on to generally gauge their effectiveness?

I was only willing to go that high since the other captains only get up to 10 in the way we are statted in this quest. I was going to say 30, but that would be selling him short.

And what is that 60, for? I can't read that stuff, man!

I think it's for pure physical strength, because he's you know, really old?

I'll check what they mean.
>>
>>39538351
Only the captains at the start of the Soul Society arc get stats.
>>
>>39538336
Strength IIRC. He's old so his physical strength isn't what it used to be. This quest just uses 10's instead of 100s because the official stats are all divisible by 10 anyway.

I think it's not straight up power levels, but rather how many points they've placed in their stats? Or how close they are to mastering it? Like despite Komamura having a score of 10 in Offense and Defense, I'm pretty sure Yamamoto is both stronger and tougher by a significant magnitude?
>>
The stats posted are largely useless, stuff changes too quickly in the manga and is too inconsistent.
>>
>>39538489
They do kind of. There's a whole thing were he goes back to his clan to learn their secret technique and they explain what he is.
>>
>>39538489
Yup he's a werewolf.

>>39538499
Also these things go out of date fast as captains knock off the ring rust from years of peace.

It's a matter of power creep is all. It does however give ground work for a quest like this to keep track of relative ability so it's useful at least.

True. It seems like around the Rukia arc, a century of peace caused a lot of the captains to kind of forget how to fight?
>>
>>39538542

Yeah, gin shows at 80 of everything, an excellent all rounder, and then he can fight on bar as strawberry quincy shake?
>>
>>39538550
Well, yeah probably cause there hasn't been a need to. After all why keep in top shape when you can still punk a Gillian with ease and take down a Adjuchas with a modicum of effort?

Gin and Aizen were likely faking. Also Ichigo was demoralized which fucks up his powers badly. Then Gin got into his head which made it worse.

Yeah resolve seems even more important in Bleach than in other battle shounens. Like their ability to just shrug off being impaled multiple times because they don't want to lose.

These are almost definitely not absolute or accurate even. Aizen, even at the beginning of the SS arc, was supposed to be at least twice as strong as your average captain. Somehow.

Again, it's relative and subject to frequent change. Like I think this is what their stats look like after they've been slacking off a while? It's even arbitrary than most.

The strength of all the captains could pretty much be summed up as "Exactly as strong as the plot demands, now stop asking questions."
>>
>>39538856
It's simple, base power off of #of Toshiro's.

Toshiro being the saibamen/Raditz of the captains.
