Welcome to Academy City. The time is early afternoon, the weather is fuzzy, and the date is January 6.

You are Kyril Torikov, and you were under the impression that you had been drinking. By the time you had gotten back home it was almost sunrise. While the day itself wasn’t busy it did end in a car crash. Tense, and mildly in shock, you thought it was a good idea to have a relaxing drink. That relaxing drink may have turned in to a whole bottle, and then some. Several bottles rolled about the floor as you sat up. Your bed had been commandeered by a wooden crate that was partially filled with ammunition. The rest littered the room. It seemed you had slept at your desk. Either you were too sloshed to care or it was an unexpected side effect of the CADME system because you had woken up on the floor next to it.

Getting up and cleaning yourself up was the first order of business. Once that was done, you finally took stock of the mess that was your current apartment. The helmet rested on the desk with a partially disassembled Sig next to it. You recalled having raided a weapons cache in revenge. The guns had been dropped off here before you went on to aid Asuka’s mom in her mad scheme which ended in tragedy. It didn’t explain why you had littered every available surface with the guns though. You even found a few Glocks in the fridge. Still, there were plenty of hours left in the day. This mess wasn’t going to sort itself out. You were also hungry. There also remained the matter of concluding last night’s matters. Thus the next order of business was to,

>Acquire a meal, and maybe some company
>Take stock of inventory, also clean up room
>Visit family, ensure no mistakes were made

You took the time to clean up the mess that was your room, cataloguing your collection for good measure. There were a few standout pieces. You had two revolvers, a weathered Webley and a shiny new Raging Bull. How those two were found in the hands of the gangs you’d never know. There were four M1911s as well, one of which happened to be yours so that was a happy coincidence. The rest, all thirty three of them, had been Glocks of varying generations and models, all of which were in bad condition. Test firing them would probably result in catastrophic failure. Of the dozen big guns, half were MP5s of the standard variation and the other half was Sig 553s. That wasn’t even going in to the crateful of ammunition you had sitting on your bed. It wasn’t going to sort itself after all but it would take a long time. You only managed to separate out most of the 9mm before you gave up.

You had better things you could be doing. Maybe if you begged Nayuta enough, you could get back to work. You had healed and recovered for long enough. The vacation had been a nice lull for the first few days. Now it felt like you were wandering without purpose. There was no school to occupy you in any case. It wasn’t as much boredom as it was restlessness. On the other hand, Lady Kudou did set you up for a job. She wanted you to conduct a little espionage on the American embassy during a dinner hosted by the ambassador. Naturally, you had been invited, along with Asuka. It was going to be a date, if only a slightly complicated one. Other than that, you couldn’t really see what else you could be doing today.

It was a big job. Though if you for whatever reason you got cold feet then at least you could just enjoy a nice dinner. A quick call later and you had a better idea of what you were getting in to. It was a formal dinner but also a rather informal gathering of local diplomats. The Japanese Ambassador was expected, along with an Academy City representative and other influential people. You supposed the Lady London counted but alas she was not attending. In her stead, Asuka, and her escort for the night, would be attending. That would be you.

Security was expected to be as tight as a military base. Your target was intelligence, briefs and instructions that were sent and received by the embassy. Lady Kudou was willing to pay millions for it but hadn’t told you where you could find such things. You assumed it’d be kept in certain computers and offices. Right now you didn’t have a floor plan and even then some reconnaissance wouldn’t be amiss.

Asuka had also mentioned shopping for it. While you had some formal wear, you certainly weren’t going to try and sneak weapons in to the embassy. It would be stupid to try. That and you were certain you wouldn’t be able to pull this off alone even if in theory you could. The invitation had only been extended to you. Sneaking anyone else in would be tricky but not impossible. Not that you needed to, just having someone monitor your progress remotely would be enough in your opinion. That and you needed to report to THIEF. Sagara could probably hook you up with some help so that would be killing two birds with one stone.

First you needed to,

The time is now late afternoon, the weather is cool, and the date remains unchanged.

You had met up with Sagara and Kyousuke at a nearby arcade in School District 7. While the ambient noise was more than enough to drown out your conversation, the two of them led you to a private room in the back. It was more than just an arcade apparently. It was a hidden gambling den. Out front were pachinko machines. The further in you walked the quieter it became until all you heard was the click-clack of mah-jong tiles and the shuffling of cards.

“You up for a game later?” Kyousuke asked.

“Maybe, haven’t had lunch yet though,” you said before turning to Sagara, “Thinking of hitting the American embassy.”

“Sounds tough,” was his reply.

“I don’t know man,” Kyousuke was apprehensive, “The pay would have to be ridiculous.”

“As I was told, the more we take, the better the pay.”

“That doesn’t sound good at all,” Kyousuke shook his head.

“That’s why he’s looking for some help,” Sagara interrupted, “Isn’t that right?”

You nodded.

“If I were you, I’d have Kyousuke act the chauffeur and Mishka for some EWAR,” he continued, “I’d recommend Tadakuni but he doesn’t know how to fly a helicopter and you’d have to convince him to leave Lupin’s love nest.”

Both of them made a face at that.

“You don’t feel up to it?” you asked.

“I’m too noticeable with the eye patch,” he answered, “you on the other hand stand out so much that no one would believe Daft Punk tried to rob them. Besides, you’re probably already known to them so it isn’t like you’re going to be worse off if you get caught.”

“That doesn’t actually reassure me,” you told him.

“Wasn’t trying to be. You need me for anything else?”

“No, not really,” you told him, “I’ll figure everything else out on my own. Though I have to ask, is the helicopter license really necessary?”

“It’s not so much a license as a certification, I’m sure the embassy keeps a Black Hawk stashed away somewhere so that’s another way out if you really need it,” he replied, “Now if you’ll excuse me I still have to track down the one who stole our money.”

You parted ways with Sagara and returned back to the street proper.

“So, how about some food before you tell me your master plan?”

“Well I do need to talk to Last Order.”

“Take out then, besides you’ll need to bribe her with ice cream.”

“Speaking of that, is she pissed someone stole her payday too?”

“Actually that’s only me,” his tone was bitter, “Out of all of us I’m probably the poorest. Tadakuni and Sagara have jobs and your sister’s tied herself to Iceland’s economy. Asuka’s pretty loaded too now that I think of it. It’s not like I can go back to school and the things I picked up aren’t really suited for the 9 to 5 thing.”

“Looks like Nakazawa had the right idea,” you remarked.

“It also feels weird that I’m the least fucked up in our little group,” he admitted, “Like I have normal people problems.”

“Worse comes to worst, you could always fall back on your music.”

“I guess. It’s not like I need it to pick up chicks anymore.”

You rolled your eyes as the two of you grabbed some pizza and an ice cream cake. Last Order was playing games, as she usually did, when you arrived. Your mother hadn’t started on dinner yet thankfully.

“Onii-san needs help hacking in to the American embassy says Misaka says Misaka as she contemplates the job. You’ve come to the right Misaka.”

There was a problem though. The embassy did have some stiff countermeasures so Last Order only had a brief window of opportunity before she got locked out. You had asked her to,

Last Order managed to leave a backdoor in to the system for later. She also managed to grab the fire evacuation map from an MAR server. At least you wouldn’t get lost and would have some electronic support when you were going in. It was a shame you couldn’t get a complete floor plan but every little bit helped. Coupled with the photographs and other footage of the compound you could make some pretty good guesses. There were two visible buildings, both three storeys high, an underground parking garage and a guardhouse out front.

“That’s the ballroom where the dinner is being held says Misaka says Misaka as she points out the obvious features.”

“Most of these are reception halls I bet,” Kyousuke added, “Offices would be upstairs. Barracks are either in a basement we can’t see or in the other building altogether.”

“So we’re going in blind anyway.”

“Me more than you bro. I’ll need to get a suit and a hat, you know a good tailor?”

You did but it was expensive.

“That shall not be a problem,” Asuka stepped in to the room, “With your car currently indisposed we will be relying on my mother to provide transport.”

Kyousuke’s eyebrows rose. First he looked at you, questioningly, then he turned to Asuka, intrigued.

“As I trust few, it would be natural for me to recommend you for the job, you will be compensated regardless of whether we succeed or not.”

“That’s a relief,” he breathed.

“Of course she will interview you but that is nothing more than a formality really,” Asuka finished, “Of course we can finalise arrangements later but since the dinner is tomorrow night, the sooner the better. I also have with me some information about the guests in attendance.”

“That sounds good,” Kyousuke remarked.

“It is mostly gossip from my mother but it’s better than nothing,” Asuka clarified, “By the way dear, do you know how to dance?”

You had to think about that.

“Very well let’s get Kyousuke squared away.”

It was the logical thing to do. Then Asuka’s question caught up to you.

“Wait we have to dance?”

“Of course dear, it will be a dance party after all. You do know how to dance right?”

She had repeated the question with a sinister smile on her face.

“Of course I do,” you replied smoothly.

“Well then, Mishka please fetch an instrument for our maestro?”

Last Order disappeared in to the bedroom and returned with a case which she tossed at Kyousuke. He barely caught it.

“Are you not going to offer your hand?” Asuka continued.

You offered your hand.

“And bow.”

She rattled off instructions, mostly with regarding the placement of your hands, and the steps. The other was mostly arguing with Kyousuke over the choice of music. He was more a concerto type and didn’t quite have the knowledge to play a waltz on his own. Last Order solved that by bringing up the sheet music on the main screen. Soon enough the music filled the room.

https://youtu.be/Kkv_mV1wQ8c

Then the two of you were off waltzing around the apartment. The steps weren’t hard, and it wasn’t like Asuka was forceful or anything in leading. You liked to think you had a sense for rhythm and footwork. It was a simple exercise all told, especially since the song kept time for you.

“Well I must admit you have the basics down.”

“Is that a challenge?”

“I can make it one,” she clarified, “I shall have you lead the next song, and we shall see if you pass, or not. After all it is the duty of the gentleman.”

“I do like a challenge after all.”

“Then, Mishka be a dear and put on Tschaikowksy if you please.”

Just as Last Order did, Kyousuke smoothly transitioned in to the new tune.

https://youtu.be/QxHkLdQy5f0

“There are several things you must know of the ballroom before we get there,” Asuka spoke.

“You’re just trying to distract me.”

“Perish the thought dear,” she quickly countered, “If you are lucky perhaps you might even get the privilege to dance with other charming ladies.”

You almost lost your step there.

“There will be eyes on you, and I would reckon that they shall attempt to get to know you, if only briefly through dance. After all you shall be going as VERDICT. Thus, while the first and last dance shall be mine, you may be asked to approach certain ladies and it is improper to refuse.”

“How are we going to get some time alone?”

“Oh there shall be plenty,” she said, “First there is a light bit of meeting and greeting before aperitifs are served. The guests shall find their own tables, depending on who they find agreeable or interesting. We shall be treated to a dinner and a show, which, if given a good enough excuse should allow you a little time to look around. Afterward there shall be dancing as more conversation is made. The latter is mostly and adult affair but I would not be surprised if a few do join us on the floor. Of course during the dance is the best time to slip in and out before a final speech and the guests are free to leave.”

“Should I be worried if someone asks to dance with you then?”

“That is up to you to decide,” she smiled.

The song started to wind down.

“As long as you can avoid spending all your time dancing we should have enough to look around where we need to. Any questions dear?”

“I don’t think so.”

The time is evening, the weather is rainy, and the date is now January 7.

Kyousuke opened the door for you and you in turn offered a hand to Asuka. The white Cresta was a little on the unimpressive side but everything had been a little last minute for even Lady Kudou to handle. You were in the suit that was almost impervious to small arms fire, along with a trench coat. Your pockets were empty but it wasn’t like you needed a weapon to be dangerous. Asuka was a in a classic red number, along with a mink shawl. Her hair had been done up, as if it wasn’t hard to enough to keep your eyes off her. There was no need for a valet as Kyousuke drove off to park the car. That was where you encountered your first obstacle. The underground parking garage and the other parts of the building were isolated by a Faraday cage. No signals could get in or out. Good thing then that you had access the embassy’s wireless internet connection. From that Last Order managed to keep Kyousuke in communication.

Entering the main hall, you scanned the clusters of people about the room. You could see the Ambassador and host of the dinner, chatting away with his Japanese counterpart. There were two Code M inside as well. One was a young woman with medium length brown hair. She was chatting with two other girls, a ginger and a blonde. A quick glance confirmed that the blonde wasn’t anyone you recognised. The other Code M was a young man who was chatting with two familiar faces. They were Tadakuni and Sholmes. Now that was an interesting combination.

“I myself shall be greeting the His Excellency, the Ambassador, and you are free to do as you wish.”

You parted ways with Asuka, grabbing a flute of bubbly from a confused waiter. It took you past the Ambassadors who were otherwise engaged, and the gaggle of girls. The ginger pointed at you eliciting a giggle from the brunette and a predatory wink from the blonde. Your stride grew. You managed to catch the tail end of the joke as you approached.

“So I said to him, that’s not an eldritch abomination, that’s my wife,” the Code M finished.

It earned a chuckle from the other two before they noticed.
“Well, well, well, well, look what the Dictator dragged in,” Shomes greeted, “How are you VERDICT? No that’s a silly question. You’re fine, even if you did crash your car recently. Professor, may I introduce you to our mutual acquaintance, VERDICT.”

Beneath your mask you grimaced. The Code M turned to you and offered a hand.

“A pleasure to meet you I’m sure, Dr. Yasaka Mahiro, Professor of Cosmology at the Miskatonic University in Massachusetts.”

“VERDICT, likewise,” you answered and shook firmly.

“I know what you’re thinking, but yes I am younger than I look,” he continued, “I’ve heard good things about you so do colour me impressed if half of those stories are true.”

“Doc I don’t think even VERDICT can top half your stories,” Tadakuni interjected.

“Well I suppose some of my exploits may seem otherworldly,” the Professor shrugged.

“Where’s your date?” you asked Tadakuni.

“I don’t have one,” your friend admitted, “I’m hoping to change that. Honestly, all I know was that Riko asked me to attend so I’m not sure whether she’s here in disguise or not.”

“Ah yes, she so does love pulling pranks on other people, and just between us, I already know what she’s up to,” Sholmes rejoined the conversation, “In this particular situation it is none of my business.”

“Professor you wouldn’t happen to have had a student by the name of Benjamin would you?”

“If it’s Benjamin III then yes, I know him,” the Professor answered easily, “It’s good to know that he hasn’t relapsed.”

“I’m going to just excuse myself from this conversation,” Sholmes said abruptly.

Then he left. You and Tadakuni turned back to the Professor.

“I took opium but once, terribly addictive substance it was,” he continued, “poor old Benjamin didn’t quite have a choice in the matter at the time.”

The Code M emission around him swirled in a pattern. Bright yellow, it evoked in you a small measure of fear. His shadow twitched queerly as he related the event which had turned Ben-jii in to a consumer of mind-altering drugs.

“I tried to help him, as much as one could help a depressed, drug-addicted, self-loathing mess. I’m glad to see that he’s taken my teachings to heart, although…”

“You can tell him doc, he already knows you’re Code M.”

“Is that what you young ones call it nowadays?” he was surprised for a bit, “In any case, Benjamin had related to me your encounter with the Hounds of Tindalos. Superbly handled, I couldn’t have done better myself.”

“You must be rather famous,” you commented.

“Oh no, not really. The good Ambassador had invited me along since I was feeling a bit homesick. That and I was curious as to the young man my charge had spoken so highly of. Observing diplomatic niceties is just a happy coincidence in this case.”

“Wait you’re not working protection then?” Tadakuni asked.

“I’m on vacation,” he chuckled, “the honour of safeguarding the good Ambassador belongs to the Missus over there.”

He gestured towards the brunette and her friends. They had accosted Sholmes, much to his displeasure. Before you could get a better look the aperitifs arrived. Asuka was taking a seat with the Ambassadors. The Professor and Tadakuni were moving to one of their own. If you wanted to do a little scouting, now wouldn’t be a bad time either.

You quickly excused yourself. Whatever reason they came up for your absence was their business. Of course once you were outside the hall, your inbuilt communicators buzzed open. You started walking in the opposite direction of the toilets right next to the hall, and from the fire evacuation map, there were only one other toilet on this floor. If anyone asked you would say you preferred the privacy.

“You’re clear onii-san says Misaka says Misaka as she double checks for you.”

“Good, ideas on where to go first?”

“Kyousuke here, I’ve got an interesting door over here by the underground area, it’s not well patrolled and the cars make for good cover. Would be suspicious if investigated though.”

“Misaka suggests wandering upstairs accidentally and bumping in to a computer says Misaka says Misaka as she plans to exploit the backdoor we have.”

“Not right now, we might need it to transfer files later,” Kyousuke reasoned.

“It wouldn’t help if it was all on paper though and it’s not like onii-san has time to do much more says Misaka says Misaka as she argues for her point of action.”

“Besides the offices are upstairs, according to the signs,” you mentioned, “Do you really need me down there?”

“If it’s a security room, it would make out life easier, but it wouldn’t make sense to put stuff down there, either way you’re going to have to sneak out unless there’s a tunnel that connects both buildings together.”

As far as the maps went, the tunnels and the basement levels weren’t all there. Sure there was one for a parking garage but there wasn’t one for this mysterious tunnel and door that Kyousuke had been talking about. You didn’t have much time anyway. Almost one whole lap of the ground floor of the current building later you found it. It was hidden behind a rather big water cooler besides the office area staircase. The way the dust got caught in the opening leading downwards was what gave it away. You would have to break in through the door next to the counters but at least you knew where it was. Thankfully, this was where the other toilets were. Quickly you used it before walking swiftly back in to the main hall.

Most of the tables had been filled already but luckily it seemed that Asuka had saved you a seat. Beside her was the American Ambassador, his wife, his Japanese counterpart and his pet Code M. There was also another girl there but she wasn’t really paying attention to you. It was the ginger the Code M had been talking to. Asuka was keen to introduce you as soon as you sat down.

“This is VERDICT, my escort for the night,” she spoke, “VERDICT this is His Excellency David A. Polendina, the Ambassador to Academy City.”

“I’ve told Miss Kudou, just Mr. Ambassador will do,” Ambassador Armstrong, “No need to go that far.”

“I must insist,” Asuka replied, “For the sake propriety.”

“You do me an honour indeed,” he turned to his family, “This is my wife, Penelope, and my daughter, Dinah.”

Like his daughter, his wife too was a ginger though they didn’t share much features. Then again you never expected the Ambassador to be huge, muscled man despite the efforts of his attire to conceal it.

“This is my associate, Ms. Herbert,” the brunette bristled, “And my counterpart, Mr. Koizumi.”

A round of handshakes and a bow later, you sat down for dinner.

“Now son, I heard you were an interesting fellow, I do hope you’ll indulge me a bit.”
