Current Recap:

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff. You are the coolest person you know, and with one notable exception, you are probably the most badass. Basically you’re the kind of person who takes care of business and gets the job done.

You are currently stranded in Canada without an easy way home. A mysterious local landmaster, Roger, found you wandering along the side of the road half frozen, and said you could crash at his place for the night. With few alternative options, you figured you’d take him up on the offer. You didn’t get boiled for stew in the night, so that’s something.

Cass will be flying all the way out to come get you, so all you have to do is sit tight. In the mean time, you’ve occupied yourself by snooping around. You’ve stumbled upon Nemo, a dude who lives in Roger’s garage. He says he’s a dragon. Still, there’s a difference between meeting somebody who says they’re a dragon and actually seeing one, and you’ve negotiated a means whereby you can get him to drop his human glamors and get all dragony on you.

--

Geeze. A trick for a trick? You need something cool. Although you have about a hundred things that are pretty damn impressive, what if Nemo’s like a million years old? Maybe doing some Verwelken kinds of crap might be new, but if Nemo’s not really a dragon, then it’s kind of pointless to reveal part of what you are. And if he is, he’s still Roger’s buddy – you’re not sure you can trust him with that kind of information.

And on top of all that, it’s still kind of rude to make somebody jump through hoops, especially if that person’s a millennia old dragon god. Nemo might not be that, exactly, but you’re not sure you want to risk it.
>>
>>39551922

“Maybe not a trick,” you say after a moment’s consideration. “I mean, I get that you’re not a conjurer of cheap tricks.”

“I wanted to see your trick though,” Nemo says, sounding disappointed.

“Well, you don’t have to glamor down if you don’t want,” you say. “I’m just kind of excited about dragons.”

“Aw don’t be like that,” says Nemo. “Let’s just see your trick thing.”

You weigh your options. You could be cautious, or you could have a chance at seeing a dragon.

Why is this even a question again?

“Stay there and give me a beat,” you say, stepping back a couple paces.

“I’ve been practicing, check this,” says Nemo. The dude starts nodding to himself to get a rhythm, and begins beat boxing. It’s not that good. But if he’s a dragon, that won’t really matter, because he’s a freaking dragon.

You plant yourself in the snow, and draw your switchblade from your backpocket. While it’s perhaps unnecessary to carry a switchblade when you’re covered with razorsharp edges, the idea of knives appeals to you.

Plus you can do sweet tricks.

You follow with Nemo’s beat, beginning to flip the little knife around your fingers, tossing it up and doing general trickery. You lay the knife on your nose, wiggle out from underneath and catch it on one of your galoshes, and kick it into the air, juggling it around with skill and speed. After maybe half a minute of this, you toss the knife high in the air, and whip out Zelathis, and start spinning it around as well. You catch your switchblade in the other hand when it comes down, and twirl your blades around.

Nemo forgets his beat boxing, though replaces it with rhythmic clapping as he cheers you on. “Badass,” he says.

“Hold on just one second,” you say tensely, your mind occupied by trajectories and sharp objects.

You start juggling the blades, cheating behind your back with your shadow self to execute extravagant and obviously impossible maneuvers.
>>
>>39551935

You throw both blades to land behind your back, catch them with your shadow, and throw them backwards on the same trajectory, plucking them out of the air by the handles.

Nemo’s eyes go wide at the implausibility of your talent. “Oh man.”

You sheathe Zelathis and spin your switchblade back into its home pocket, and smile at the dude. “You liked that?”

“How’d you even – okay wait.” He stands up, and peels off his tank top, revealing his rather wiry torso, and throws it back on the chair.

You give him a weird look. “Uh. What are you doing?”

“Your whole sword dancing thing was hella cool,” he says, kicking off his flip flops. “If you got your heart set on seeing a big ol’ dragon, man, I’m not going to get in your way.” He hooks his thumbs into the waistband of his basketball shorts. “Stand back though – the whole size thing can be a little overwhelming.”

The sheer shock of what’s happening shuts your brain down. You can only stare in bewilderment as Nemo goes to remove his shorts. You get the eerier impression he’s not wearing anything underneath.

“Nemo! What you’re doing, stop it!” shouts Roger. The landmaster, once again decked out in winter gear, trudges between you and Nemo, waving his hands in a cease-and-desist motion.

Nemo gestures vaguely in your direction, temporarily delaying his designs. “She’s never seen a dragon before, it’s cool man,” he says.

“If my mom found out about this, you’d be gone,” Roger warns. “Put You can’t strip down for every stranger off the street.”

“Sarah’s not off the street, she’s out of your house,” Nemo argues.

"Sierra," you say.

"Right," Nemo replies.
>>
>>39551963

Roger picks up the discarded tank top and shoves it into Nemo’s arms. “Just put your shirt on,” he orders, scowling. You don't need to be able to feel his annoyance to know he's not happy.

Nemo groans heavily, though does as told. You’re not sure whether you’re relieved or disappointed as he shrugs his the piece of clothing back on.

The landmaster looks over at you, noting your state of readiness.

"If you cost me my only chance to ever see an actual dragon, I'm going to be a little bit less impressed with Canadian hospitality. First, milk in bags, and then ruining one of the good things about all this magic jazz. Seriously, milk in BAGS?"
>>

Freeze it and you get ready made igloo parts.
>>
You scoff. “But I wanted to see his dragon,” you say. You feel kind of confused. “I mean... a dragon.”

“Some other time,” Nemo promises. “I’m a man of my word.”

“Yeah...” you say.

Roger makes a frustrated sound. “Are you ready to leave?” he asks.

Dragon talk will have to wait till later. “Yeah, just let me go get my mail,” you say, running back to the house. You pop in, snap it up, and head back out. You find Roger heading through the snowfall towards his truck, and head over.

Reeber knows what’s up, and clamors into the bed. Looks like he’s more interested in adventure than comfort.

You jump into the truck with Roger. Wordlessly, he puts the vehicle in gear and you head off down toward the main road.

“Nice save back there,” you note.

Roger lets out a breath between his teeth. You can feel the subdued, smoky anger radiating from him, mixed liberally with sheer power. “Do me a favor and forget that happened,” he says flatly. He glances over at you. “You look better.”

“I do?” you ask.

He watches the road. “You were covered in scratches yesterday.”

“Oh yeah,” you say, remembering. “I’ve got a fast metabolism.”

“A fast metabolism,” he says, his tone doubtful.

“Or uh. Something like that,” you reply. Although your legs are still all bruised and stuff. No pain no game. Or is it gain? Or... something? “So... is he a dragon or not?”

Roger doesn’t reply immediately. Eventually, however, he chooses his words. “I think the less you know about me, and the less I know about you, the better,” he says.

>Yeah, I suppose. Kind of scary what’s out there. It’s a big world.

Are landmasters just giant dickbags or something, and I didn't get the memo? Because so far you've been pretty cool about finding me randomly out there by "your" well.

Seriously, though, with all this magic crap going on and throwing a wrecking ball into my life, it's things like getting to see Unicorns and Dragons that make it worth it sometime. OH MY GOD, if he could have told me how to get wings I will never forgive you."

“Sure, but seriously though, is the dude a dragon?” you say, not really invested in whatever else he’s saying.

“You knowing more about my friends is you knowing more about me,” Roger tells you.

“Let me be real for a second,” you say. “I'm kind of miffed about you dragonblocking me. There. I said it.”

Roger takes a deep breath. “There are other dragons out there,” he says. “What Nemo is or isn’t – what does it matter to you?”

“Okay, first off, duh, dragons. I feel I’ve been pretty consistent on that point,” you say, as if explaining yourself to a child. “Second off, I don’t know if barricading yourself behind walls of snow and coffee beans will work out. I mean. We’re like, landmaster neighbors,” you reason. “If we wind up having to deal with each other, we’ll have to wise up anyway.”

“It’s not that simple,” says Roger, tightening his grip on the steering wheel.

“Oh yeah? Why’s that, Canada guy?”

He narrows his eyes. “Because it’s... it’s just not,” he says. “There’s risks involved, risks I have no right to take.” He shakes his head, and relaxes a little. “You’re a long way from California. Do you have a ride home?” he asks, changing the topic.

You’re a little taken aback by the sudden turn in tone, but manage to shrug. “Somebody’s flying out, so. You know.”

He seems annoyed by that. “All the way out here?”

You snort. “Wouldn’t do to go half the way.”

Roger thinks for a minute. “Have they left yet?”

You check your non-existent watch. “Definitely not yet, probably.” You’ll have time to kill in Willems Lake, jewel of the Canadian West.
>>
>>39553650

“Do you have a well near where you live?” he asks.

“Kind of,” you reply.

He nods, still thoughtful. “If we go to one of my nodes, I can portal you home,” he says.

“Wait. You mean like. teleportation?”

“Similar,” he says.

>Not that I don’t think that sounds cool, but I’ve had enough teleportation for one weekend.

While teleportation sounds pretty cool, you feel like you’ve had enough teleportation for one weekend. On the other hand, teleporting around all over the place would be pretty freaking awesome.

“Okay, not to rain on your Canadian parade, but I’ve had some pretty iffy experiences with teleportation in the past. Why’s this going to be any better?” you ask.

“I’ll just drop you off in town when we get there,” says Roger.

“Wait wait wait. I didn’t mean that I didn’t want to, I just meant... I don’t know. Just let’s hold the phone a second,” you say. “Is this some neat landwell trick BS you just picked up one day, or is this like, something you actually can learn how to do?”

“It’s not a secret,” says Roger.

You snort. “Any chance you could let me in on the trick to it, then?” you ask. “Cause that’d be way crazy.”

“It’s straightforward if you have somebody to show you,” says Roger. “Just ask them about it.”

“That’s the thing. I’ve kind of just been winging all this up till now,” you say.

This gives Roger some pause. “I thought you said you wound up here because you were skipping planes,” he says.

“Yeah, and it wasn’t like I had anything to do with it,” you say.

You reach the main road, and Roger looks both ways down the forest-lined road. There’s no one in sight forever, so the stop’s blatantly unnecessary. “You legitimately do not have anyone to talk to about this,” he says, kind of a question, kind of a statement.

You raise your hands in exasperation. “The first landmaster I met tried to stomp me in a duel, and the second’s a maple-head with some weirdo secrecy isolation phobia,” you say, kind of fed up with the situation. (+2 Stress: 9)

After a moment of deliberation, Roger’s expression softens. “It’s not like that, all right?” he says, sounding tired. “Look. I can show you how to portal between your landwells, if you want.”

Aw yes. “I do want,” you say.
>>
>>39556501

“Fine,” he says, turning right onto the road.

You vaguely remember directions from before, and understand you’re driving to the floating lake landwell from last night. The idea of teleporting around all over the place gives you the chills. Kind of a cool deal. (-1 Stress: 8)

Still, for a guy who’s cool enough to let supernaturally powered vagabonds crash at his house, it’s weird how hard it is to convince him to help you. Maybe he’s just a distant kind of person, or something like that.

“You know, I’m not trying to like, kill you or whatever,” you say.

Roger’s expression is hard to gauge, as are his feelings on the matter. “You wouldn’t have gotten within a mile of my house if you were,” he says. He doesn’t say anything else, and you don’t try to make him.

Eventually you get to the side road that leads to the side path, and from there, you walk out to the well, with Reeber close behind.

Roger isn’t super talkative, and you wind up whistling a tune to fill the silence.

But eventually you get to the isolated lake, with the landwell smack dab in the middle. The ice is covered with a fresh sheet of snow, hiding where the water begins and the shoreline ends. However, the lake’s general form can be seen by the uncannily flat plane of pristine snow which stretches out before you. The whole hidden ice thing is sketchy as hell.

Roger, however, ignores the blatant risks and walks out toward the well over the ice. His tracks mark the only touch of texture over the whole flat plane of white.

You find yourself halting by the shoreline. Maybe last night it made more sense when you saw what you were up against, and when you would have been the only one on the ice, but this whole thing just doesn’t seem like a good idea. (+1 Stress: 9)
>>
>>39557087

You can hear the ice making noises under Roger’s footsteps. You can’t stop yourself from picturing what it’d sound like if he dropped out of view into the water below. (+2 Stress: 11)

You take a deep breath. You’ve got this. You’re not afraid of water, you’re just... kind of not somebody who’s a fan of suddenly being dumped into water. You shiver uncontrollably for a second. (+4 Stress: 15)

“I said it’s safe,” Roger says. He’s closer to the well, looking back at you. “It’s at least four inches out here.”

“You didn’t say that, you just walked out there like some kind of ice walker,” you reply. You don’t have to be very loud for your voice to carry over the silence.

“Well I’m saying it now,” says Roger. “It’s perfectly safe, look.” He jumps up and down a couple of times, stomping on the ice with abandon.

“Quit it!” you bark. Any second he’s going to die if he keeps it up. (+4 Stress: 19)

He gives you a quizzical look. “You need to be out here if I’m going to show you how to open a portal,” he says. “There’s no way around it.”

You manage to get a hold of yourself. He’s out there, so obviously it’s okay. Right? “Four inches. That’s like. That’s pretty thick, right?” you ask.

“It’s February. You’re in British Colombia. The ice is thick,” he says. He motions you toward him. “Come on.”

Whatever. You can do this. You could probably jump to shore if you needed to, even right off the surface of the water. You can feel the shadows underneath the ice, lying in wait for the slightest disturbance for you to call them to action. You’ve fought and killed demons twice your size. You’ve got this.

You grit your teeth and step out onto the snowy ice. And then you take another step. And another. And then -

The ice kind of slips under your yellow boot, and you wind up narrowly avoiding a fall. But the scuffle clears away some of the snow, and you’re left with a clear view downwards. The ice gleams black in the off-white light glowing from the iron clouds above. You can feel the depth below you, gaping wide. (+4 Stress: 23)

You feel a churning in your stomach. It’s like you can almost see something down there in the dark, gently drifting, turning, and you feel kind of dizzy. (+5 Stress: 28; -1 Sanity: 81)

No, it doesn't. Sanity only goes up from certain things Sierra does, it doesn't come back on its own.

>>39557722
Yes, it does. It's slow and we don't see it when we're doing the play by play updates, but it happens.
>>
>>39557722

It does regenerate, though only with a lot of time and a lot of normal things that are in Sierra's comfort zone.
>>
>>39557737
Well it must only go up a point or two every 10 threads or such, cause I never notice it going up on it's own.

Regardless it isn't worth it. The lower our sanity gets the easier it is for it to deteriorate and it does so faster.

A snowball can quickly turn into an avalanche.
>>

We're only down 19 Sanity, that's not all that bad. We've got some buffer and there should be some San regen once we get back to the Hallows, and doing regular life stuff.

You’re not sure if you want to see what you think you’re seeing. “There’s something down there,” you say. “What the hell’s down there?” (+3 Stress: 31)

Roger gets a faraway look on his face for a second. “Nothing except a few fish,” he says.

“I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a fish,” you say.

He still seems pretty dismissive. “Then you must know something I don’t.”

The comment kind of jars you out of your pseudo-panic. Roger is the landmaster here. If there was anything funky going on, he’d probably be the one to know about it. You force your mind off of the things below. You just need to calm down. You’re okay. There’s nothing wrong, you’re just a little on edge because of the ice.

“It’s this sketchy-ass Canada death ice,” you say, stopping your shivers and turning them into a careful shuffle that moves you forward. It’s actually not that far. In just a little bit you reach Roger. The landwell burns with power just a couple yards away.

In which case we kill him dead, or try to, in which case we just come back and kill him dead
>>
>>39558457
Kill him? Noooo, let's not go crazy here. This is a guy who bosses around dragons (using his momma's authority, but still). No, I say we just bail and find our way home without his help at that point. No need to provoke him unless necessary.

Plus killing him might piss off the only dragon we've ever met. No reason to burn that bridge if we can help it.

“It is kind of bad though,” you say, still feeling unstable on your feet. If you think about it too much, it’s like everything tilting back and forth. “I’d rather fight a beetleman, and I’m not even joking. You seriously keep something under here, don’t you.”

“I can feel all the life for miles in every direction,” says Roger. “There’s nothing under here but fish.”

“I’m calling BS,” you say, clearing aside some snow with a foot. You’re out of practice, but you still remember the rudimentary light magic Moriah taught you. Light’s kind of like fire, so you’re pretty good at it. Except you don’t want it in your hand, you want it in the water, under the surface.

You kneel down and press a hand to the cold, darkened ice, and try to form the light beneath. It takes more power than you thought, but you’re good to go on magic fuel. (-3 PP: 29) The white flames burn along the bottom of the ice, intense in their light. Rays pierce down through the depths to the lake bottom, which is surprisingly close. This whole thing is only like six feet deep, max.

A group of fish scatter at the sudden intrusion of light. Other than that, there’s nothing but frigid water and gross gangly mud plants on the bottom. Another second of looking gives you nothing to show except self-doubt.

Roger doesn’t comment, though he does join you in surveying the bottom of the lake.

Kind of confused, and feeling the beginnings of a headache, you stand and brush the snow off yourself. “Guess it went into hiding,” you say, not quite sure of what you saw anymore. (+1 Sanity: 82) “But uh. Anyway. Here’s the well, here’s us. What do I do? But actually first, are there any other ‘easy’ landmaster tricks I should know about?”

“I know Landwells can do all kinds of things,” says Roger. “That doesn’t mean I know what half of those things are. Portalling though, every landmaster I’ve run into knows portalling.”

“Let’s see it,” you say.

Roger touches a hand to the well. “All right, touch the well with me,” he says.

You do as instructed. You feel a strange buzzing sensation as your hand nears the emerald ball of light, which intensifies as you actually lay your hand on the thing. It’s like an intense vibration, shaking the sense out of your hand, even though there’s no physical movement involved.

Crimson light flares out at your touch, burning around your hand, but only your hand – the rest remains green.

“You know your land sense?” asks Roger.

“My what now?” you ask, blinking.

“The connection to your land,” he says.

“Right,” you say, fishing around your mind for the dull, distant feeling of the wells you’ve captured.

“Concentrate on the well you want to go to. Feel the land around that well.”

You focus on the San Bruno well until you get a vague feeling for the life of San Fransisco. It’s really windy. Cold. Cloudy. But a whole lot warmer than it is here. Its abuzz with movement, with life. You can almost feel the lives.

Roger can see you’ve got it. “Project the feeling of that node onto this node. It takes some power, and it burns up the energy of the destination well, but it works every time.”

You do as instructed, struggling to hold the whole sense of the well in mind long enough to imagine it outside of yourself. With a touch of will, you superimpose the feeling of San Francisco over Roger’s well, or more appropriately, the portion of Roger’s well that you’re in contact with.

You feel something happening, and suddenly you’re aware of Reeber on the ice, right at your side. (-10 PP: 19)

“Good luck,” says Roger, taking a step back.

You scoff and turn to look at him. “What’s that supposed... to mean?”

It’s warm and humid, and a strong, salty wind breezes past you. You’re on a grassy slope, with a commanding view of Daily City. The tumultuous pacific sits grey out to the horizon, with a dull white overcast sky above. You’re only like, a few miles from home.

Reeber shakes the snow off his glamored coat of fur, and looks up at you with questioning eyes.

This is a good thing to check, though.

I guess this means we can make a quick trip back to the Fields of Rust if we decide we wanna try talking to Hugo.
>>
>>39558734
Do that, but call the Hallows first.

Call Hallows, then check and see what you can feel in the rust fields.

Thanks for running Lawnguy.

so you know when you'll be able to run next time?

So, we can now teleport. I wonder how many other people we can bring, and what the PP cost would be? This means we don't have to drive to the forest anymore.
>>
>>39558652
Call the Hallows I suppose. A ride home would be nice. Did we end up stealing Roger's boots?
>>
>>39559852
Yup. We totally stole Roger's boots.

If he wants them back he's going to have to go against his weirdo paranoid isolationist Canada act and contact us, and put up with us bothering him more.
>>
So we didn't see the dragon. Damn. I guess we shouldnt have been so polite.
