The forest is a very strange place in the twilight-

The last red rays of the setting sun, the cold light of the moon and stars rising overhead, the cool air of the fall swirling, picking up the scents of fallen leaves, of soil and bark.

The rushing water of the river is to your right- churning whitewater rapids, the cold spray reaching you even with your distance from the bank, the rumbling thunder of the falls audible even from here.

You were scared of the night, before. Sounds, growls and calls from animals you couldn't imagine, the warnings your mother would utter as she tucked you all in.

And now-
Now, even as the light fades, the space around you is quiet, respect for your form, your strength holding the tongues of nearby creatures.

Your friends are all in varying states of sleep. Which is to say that Nin and Sheszka are wholly unconscious, Esmerelda is currently in her own personal twilight of hibernation-
And Jin, being an owl, is more alert than normal, leaving her spot on your shell to more needy members of your party, perching across your shoulders, her feathers making the barest sound of ruffling as she twists, looking all around.

Does anyone have that drawing of nin with a rapier? I'm searching the archives for it but can't remember what thread it was in.
>>
>>39565419

I can't believe that no one bothered to mention the most interesting thing to ask Jin about, aka, that she gave Ezzy a lift and showed her the world from on high.

Goddamnit, she finally did something of her own volition. Ask about that!
>>
>>39566062
She does things of her own volition all the time. Just off-screen.
>>
You don't break pace, the cool evening air fluttering your bangs- but not the heavy braid trailing behind you.
You glance at the river, the surface just now starting to reflect the stars, glittering and flowing, the water clear where it isn't foaming.

You're really going to miss the forest, aren't you?

You blink slowly, each set of eyes closing, one after the other.

"Jin?"
"Lyra."

The harpy shifts lightly on your shoulders, talons flexing against your shirt, trying to keep steady and not poke holes in you at the same time.

"I can carry you, if you want."
"I like it up here, yes."
"Oh?"
"I can see everyone. And I..."

You wait a minute, the harpy falling quiet above you.
"- I like perching in high places."

"Yes?"
"I was going to say I like being closer to the stars."
"Mmm. We can stop at the waterfall, if you like. It'll be a while before we see it again, yes?"
"I would like that, I think."

You're nearing the falls themselves, the roar growing louder and louder, water crashing to the forest below.
"When we travel- You can see different stars from different places, yes."

Her head is tilted back, sweeping the constellations overhead.
"How?"

You point a chitin coated finger into the distance, another star twinkling far away.
"You can see that, yes?"
"Yes."
"Imagine if that star was overhead, right now. You could see ones past it, further away- and the ones you could see now would be like that one, distant and small."

"I want to see all of them."

Didn't see Lanns new class
>Level 4: Special Class: Ranger: A hunter who fights side by side with monsters, and can mimic the powers of their partners. But Lyra is leaving-
Haha
I wonder if Lann starts bugging Elle now into going hunting with her. Lyras insanity will continue to haunt Elle even in absence.
>>
>>39566445
Shouldn't Lanns charsheet be updated in regards to
>Clothing: Standard stuff, made from whatever she could get cheap.
Clearly that isn't true anymore after getting outfitted by Elle.
>>
>>39566453
We could pay Lann to make sure Elle gets out some. They both use ranged weapons. It'd work out.
>>
>>39566453
Pretty sure she'd bug Aria first.
>>
>>39566477
True, but Elle would be funnier.
>>
>>39566453

Maybe a hint she'll come with us. Character overload be damned, she's kind of the best developed character we have.
>>
>>39566349
Jin and Shezka evolving soon was rather predicatble to the degree that I'm more surprised Lyra is only behind 11 and 6 levels respectively.

Lann's ranger is all kinds of interesting though.
Anyone else figure she might be considering to come along after all in order to keep leveling the Special Class?
Either that or she might group up with Aria once Aria stops sulking in the woods.
>>
>>39566513
Its kinda true.

I had always hoped our journey to the elflands would be started by Lann getting kidnapped by her family for that marriage she ran away from.
>>
>>39566518

I don't know. The thing here is that REQM is doing what he can to make month old characters interesting, but with no developed personal habits, relationships, or hobbies extrinsic to the character, they are kind of flat, moe blobs.

It's good to see Jin do something on her own for once that's more than sleeping or eating. I'd like to see Lann come along because she actually behaves like an adult with her own agenda. I wouldn't even be surprised if spider mom hired her to keep tabs on what's essentially a group of super powered toddlers running off into the wild blue yonder.
>>
>>39566527

I always thought it would be amusing if arranged marriage guy was our dad. even if thats not the case.
>>
I suddenly thought about making a hot air balloon. It just came to me like that.
We can make fire to keep it in the air easily, and make the balloon itself out of silk. We'd just have to create a sturdy base/basket.

We could totally fly with Jin a little.
>>
>>39566873

We've already talked about that a while ago, as well as how easy it would be to make a steam engine. The answer we seemed to reach was that we didn't want to use our future knowledge, effectively making our character's reincarnated status irrelevant. I'm fine with that.
>>
>>39566904
Anyone else think we should talk to Elfdad about reincarnation and our dream before we set out?
>>
>>39566643
The problem is that at every point We've chosen to keep them around making sure that in no way they can develop offscreen.

Given the relatively short threads that means only the character we focus on/talk to get any chance to evolve in character. I'd say REQM is doing the best he can with the cards he's been dealt.
>>
>>39566904
I can understand for a steam engine, but a hot air balloon is so easy. Plus Lyra would have motivation in terms of ADVENTURE and bonding with her friend..
>>
>>39566935

Why? It's not like he's some expert on the great wheel. That said, I don't really view him as a parent. So sure, we could ramble it at him and I wouldn't really care about further reducing the non-existent father-daughter bond between him and Lyra by letting him know he missed both of her childhoods. The only problem is if it came back to Mom or our siblings.
>>
>>39566951

It's really, really fucking easy to make, especially with flame retardant silk at our disposal. All we would need is an afternoon with some wicker and a week making the canvas, plus however long it takes us to construct a simple hatch to let out excess heat at the top.

I just don't see it as worth bothering over. It raises a bunch of questions and breaks character pretty hard after how long we've just ignored that part of the character entirely.
>>
>>39566935
not really up for mentioning us being a reincarnation, and we don't remember much if anything of the dream.
>>
>>39567032
Well, in future if we end up with a ship we have no use for, we could turn it into a air ship.

We would just need a fire stone or two so we could keep the buoyancy/lift constant most of the time.
>>
>>39566935
We have no reason to talk about the reincarnation, if anyone it would be Mom we would be talking about it. And wer don't remember the dream.
>>
>>39566974
>So sure, we could ramble it at him and I wouldn't really care about further reducing the non-existent father-daughter bond between him and Lyra by letting him know he missed both of her childhoods.
That was my #1 reason for telling him and not mom.
#2 being he would be more interested in it from a scholarly perspective and the possibility of the first might just go right over his head.

>The only problem is if it came back to Mom or our siblings.
We could just ask him not to tell mom or the others.
But you're right it's just as easy to keep quiet about the whole affair.
>>
>>39567032
Fine. Guess I'll wait until we have to find a way to access a sky castle or something. Though I would've liked if it was done purely out of friendship and because we could.
>>
Jin launches herself from your shoulders, pitching over the cliff, swooping through the spray of the waterfall and into the stars congregating below.

She's no Sara, but they seem happy to see her all the same- A few smaller ones trail after her as she hurtles through them, hooting and circling the larger ones as the constellations make room for her in their number.

You use a bit of magic- far preferable to climbing on water slick stone and trying not to drop everyone and everything.

Your stone elevator deposits you neatly at the foot of the cliff, and you find a nice spot, making yourself comfortable as Jin circles the clearing overhead. Even as she comes in to land on you once again, a few of the stars follow, lighting the area around you all with pale silver.

"You will see all the stars, then?"
She nods taking position on your shoulders once more, careful to keep her feet free of the snoozing snake.
"That is a lot of stars, yes."
"I will see all of them, fly everywhere. I will catch the greatest of them in my talons, and everyone will see."

She lifts one foot, prodding at the stars surrounding her with a talon.

"Mhm."
"Yes."

"Ezzy said she went flying, yes?"
"She is small and light. But loud."
"She was screaming?"
"And then yelling. And telling me to go faster. I think that she liked it."
"Where did you go?"

Jin points a wing over the trees, back towards home.

"Over the forest- the ruins, the waterfall, the village. She liked being high, yes."
"Mmm. Flying seems nice."
"I will get bigger. I'll take you someday."
"I'll look forward to it, yes."
"You have to stop getting bigger, though."

You laugh a little as you pick yourself up, heading through the brush for home.

Conversation meanders as you walk, your voices accompanied by insects and birds in the night.
>>
>>39567158
"-Well, what do you like eating then?"
"It is just too much bear."
"I haven't even had bear recently. Not that I remember. And you haven't answered me."
"Rabbits."
"Rabbits?"
"Rabbits."

"Wouldn't you need a lot of them?"
"Just a few. I am a small harpy, not a giant spider."
"Mhm. Well- We can try to catch more, yes."

You glance back, peeking around Jin's leg to your snoring friends.
"What- What do you think about the trip, yes? About everyone?"
"Everyone?"
"It was only you and me, before."

She 'hmmms' softly to herself, folding her wings and leaning onto your head as she thinks.

"Sheszka is- I think Sheszka is getting better. I think she was afraid."
"Like when she was sick?"
"She thinks- thought she couldn't disagree."
"The alpha and pack and all that?"
"Yes."

"But she's better?"
"I think she will argue more. And still try to make you important."
"What?"
"She is always behind you, yes. Because you are first."
"Gah."

"And Nin is silly. Fun, but silly. She keeps things to herself."
"I think there's a lot she doesn't keep to herself, yes."
"You make funny noises when you get upset."
"I'm glad she has your support."
"It is fine. You are too serious, and she is too silly."
"I'm not- that serious."

She curves over you, staring at you upside down.
"I'm not!"
"Mmm. Ezzy is small. And she feels she is small. But she is talking and moving on her own, instead of hiding."
"That's good."
"She should hunt more."
"Maybe. I've been lazy about hunting for a while now, yes."
"That is fine. You are getting too hungry for the forest."

"You-"
"And Lyra thinks too much. She is always thinking, and trying to put other people ahead. Mother says she should try being a child sometimes, instead of worrying about other people's problems."

"Nnnnghgh-"

You scratch at your head as Jin picks herself off it, a smug sort of giggle from your resident shoulder-harpy.
"Well?"

You offer your hands in surrender.
"I just- I want people to be happy, yes"

The harpy pricks at your skin, a delicate poke with a talon as she snorts.
"You should be happy. You deserve it more."
"Um. I will try?"
"I will make sure of it."

You spend the trail back to the nest trying to argue your point.

"-and what about when we rescued Nin's sister?"
"What about it?"
"That was help people, yes? To make someone else happy."
"Yes?"
"Well- That, that is something that needed doing."

"And we did it."
"Yes."
"I don't understand. You still deserve happiness, yes."
"I'm not saying I don't."

"Then why are we arguing?"
"I'm trying to say that helping other people is important."
"Yes."
"And that's why- You agree?"

"Yes. I just think that you are important, too."

Jin is really stubborn when she wants to be.
You let loose a sigh as you brush aside the last low hanging branch in your way, stepping into the wide clearing that marks your home.

"Travelling will be good, I think."
"Finding new people's problems to help?"
"It's not- Are you being sarcastic?!"

Jin laughs again, letting you pull her from your shoulder, tucking her under one arm, rousing Your friends- They either have to take the ladder after you throw it down, or hold on tight.

They take the latter, and it's a short trip up the tree to your home.
Sleep takes you quickly, and without any arguments from you.

By the way, I was thinking... In theory it'd be relatively easy to make some sort of a glider for ezzy, she is by far the smallest and lightest of us, and as such would require the smallest sized one of anyone, and with spider silk we can do the Kerbal space program approach of all of the struts to secure it.

Also with a glider for ezzy my dream of an ezzy-jin dive bombing force could be realized. Also ezzy could be our little dragon.

Parachutes aren't hard to make, you just need to maximize air resistance, which is more of a trick of how we secure the cloth and less a trick of actual knowledge. The big issue is a parachute likely won't be very effective at low altitude... although, granted the difference between serious injury and death is much more profound when you have insane healing speeds.

Everything is wonderfully warm and nice and perfect.

Heat radiates out from beneath you, turning your muscles to mush-
Which is fantastic, because most of your body is, in fact, a long string of muscles and scales.

Something is prodding at you, and you sleepily slap it away, returning to the wondrous depths of your perpetual half-asleep state.

And then a spike of cold sends you shooting up, coils snapping straight beneath you, rearing you into the air as you shriek.

"Are you awake now, yes?"

You look up from your current spot- Lyra's hands cupped around you, the dismal cold fading into heat again as her hands glow.
"You are a monssster. What kind of persssson wakes someone up like that?!"

She grins back at you, the hints of her fangs visible on her lips.
"The kind that spent near thirty minutes trying to wake you up kindly. I have a job for you, little snake."
"I am not litt- A job?"

Your stomach is blossoming with butterflies, a fluttery feeling that works through your nerves, your tail starting to thrash behind you.

"That is right, yes. I want you to hunt."
"I think it might go bad before I have enough to feed you."
"Very funny. I am going to send you and Nin to hunt rabbits, yes."

"Rabbits?"
"Yes. And people will be eating them, so try not to bite more than one."
"One?"
"You don't want to eat your own catch?"

There's a spark of excitement at getting your own meal, for yourself. Even that little piece of independence is a glowing dream for you- One that's getting closer and closer by day.
You have to stop yourself from nodding so fast that the blood is rushing to your head.

You're an adult, dammit. You're older than Lyra!

A major consideration is also competition- If there's noone else in whatever radius, you're much more likely to get a license

Best pizza in my home town is from a family owned restaurant. Usually has a half in layer of cheese chock full of whatever toppings you want. And you don't just get see-through thin slices of peperoni, but big slices of sausage. And meatballs if you ask for them.

Hmm, yeah. Although I'd guess an independent business could operate profitable before a chain store does if only because they don't have to pay license fees.

The again they'd likely be able to get their supplies cheaper from their company.

I guess it's pretty complicated.
>>
>>39569925
Always figured it was the chains inability to modify their recipes

Best pizza i get is from the independents because of the unique way they do their pizzas from place to place

You can do this- You can absolutely do this! You can hunt like a champion. Bunnies everywhere will fear you, and-

"Wait? Nin?"
"Yes?"
"Are we hunting leaves?"
"How would you even hunt leaves?"

"Knock over trees and scare little snakes?"
"Keep laughing, yes. I will see how well you fly without Jin-"
"Yes, yes. No biting."

"Okay."
"Can I have a weapon?"
"A weapon?"
"Like a sword!"

"Uh. Maybe not a sword, yes? A spear or an axe."
"Why spears or axes?"
"Less chance of hurting yourself, yes. Or a dagger. A dagger would be good."

"I will ask Mom to show you how to use a sword later, yes?"
"Uh. Maybe."
"I am sure she will go easy on you."
"Does she know how?"

"Well- Noone has died, yes?"
"Really?"
"Noone I know has died?"

That's vaguely reassuring?
While Lyra clatters about getting things ready, you're left to deal with Nin.

"Esmerelda."
"Nin."
"Still refusing to let me paint you, I see."
"Why would I ever let you paint me?"
"How else are you supposed to be a proper decoration for the queen?"

"She isn't listening. You don't need to try and embarrass her."
"It's practice, practice!"
You roll your eyes and hiss.
"Jin helps out."
"You're both ridiculous."

Lyra is coming back.

Rabbits will be in burrows or warrens anyway, flying will just help us find it faster.

Isn't a spear way too large to be used by someone who will rely on sneaking most of the time?

we can get a shorter spear for a lamia.
>>
WHAT IS IT WITH /TG/ AND LAMIAS WITH POLE ARMS JESUS FUCK!?
>>
>>39570970
depends on how long the spear is relative to the person, if you can tuck it close to yourself it works just fine, which may be a bit easier for a snake
>>
Knives and snakes on the ground, where merciful gods intended.

Flying constricting poisonous monsters do exist, though.

Writing!
>>
>>39571052
pole arms are relatively easy to use, and the reach is nice? Also Lyra uses polearms, maybe tiny snek got the idea from her?

>>
>>39570970

One persons spear is another persons toothpick.

Besides, someone as small as Esmerelda, with trained spear use can use an opponents size and momentum against them.
>>
>>39571062
She is already tiny. A spear so small she could use it would have to be about as large as her torso, because otherwise it gets in the way of her movement. Which would not really give any advantage.

>Hunting from the ground would be best. You're pretty much invisible against the dirt.

Find a rabbit warren and go down. Have Nin stand by in the area. Rabbits will flee from the other holes, she can ambush any that try to go past her.

>Knives are simple.

We're bigger now, but not that big. An axe or spear will probably just be encumbering.
>>
>>39571052
I think lunging polearms, such as the spear, suit lamias well, due to the strength and speed of a lunging snake
>>
>>39571157
>Eh, its a valid view I guess, particularly with a normal sized lamia, however due to her small stature I think that she would act as an ambush fighter if anything. Making dynamic entry a more viable method, and with dynamic high speed entries, blunt weapons or axes are better I think.
>>
>>39571157
Her spear would have to be tiny for her to be able to use it during sneaking, and then it loses a lot of effect, not to mention will break easily.
>>
>>39571213
I've been thinking, since lyra can just craft shit straight from metal, what if we went the disposable weapon approach, where we use a bunch of easily breakable weapons and keep swapping them out with new ones from lyra, who can probably craft that size on the fly.
>>
>>39571246
That might work for her. I see no particular advantage to that over using a axe for Ezzi, especially for variety, but if we do throwing spears, we might be able to make them sharp enough to work.
>>
>>39571286
If were using an axe for her size it will have the same issue of size, and will probably end up stuck or broken a lot, especially with high velocity impacts such as those from lunging or falling from height.
>>
>>39571322
Sure, but it will definitly be more liklely to be able to penetrate fur or armour than a tiny spear.
>>
>>39571322
Not really, density would matter a lot here for the axe head.
The handle might be a problem, but we can reinforce that.
>>
>>39571343
Axes are good at hacking things apart, not going through armor or scales in a single blow. If they break on the first strike they are kinda useless.

Spears are piercing weapons.
>>
>>39571343
The main point of a spear is that you brace it and let what ever is charging you gut itself.
Its a better defensive weapon, something a small snake might need.
Axes require mass to do much. Bladed weapons are fine, piercing almost always works except direct armor strikes.
>>
>>39571413
>Spears are piercing weapons.
Which is kinda bad if they are too small, so they break if you try to pierce something.
The axe head will be more likely to actually get into the target, even if the handle breaks.

Neither will be able to overcome scales or anything like actual armour, due to Ezzys size and lack of strength.
The main issue about the spear is that all advantages, ar basically nil due to it having to be tiny for Ezzy.
>>
>>39571464
She should honestly just slather the spear with her poison and slither up their body stabbing at vital points and eyes.
>>
Also, as much as you guys see otherwise, I don't see ezzy being useful in combat... don't get me wrong, she is definitely practical in many situations, such as infiltration of a building, scouting, ambushes, assassination (the good old snake in a boot trick), or even distractions. But I don't see her slaying great beasts or fighting in honorable combat.
>>
The predominating strength in a lamia's body is derived from the tail. A truly effective weapon designed for them would be meant for the tail rather than for their human parts. Something like a bladed cap for the tip of her tail would be ideal.

A weapon for her human body would be a second. A spear would probably be good, if only because her main objective should be defense rather than offense if something is baring down on her vital area.
>>
>>39571464
A lamia could use her tail as a spring for forward momentum and piercing, Axes require Pure strength and swinging to bludgeon through an enemy.
>>
>>39571441
Spears still require bulk in order to be sturdy enough to not snap. So a tinysnek scale is still an issue.
>>
>>39571504
Thats a issue when it comes to hunting.

>>39571506
At some point she will be, its currently jusr up to us to decide in what way. If we train her more in strength, she will most likely get a evolution that increase that. If we train her in dexterity, she will do that.
And probably stay small.
>>
>>39571543
>A lamia could use her tail as a spring for forward momentum and piercing
The spear will still breaking because its too tiny.
>>
>>39571545
We could use our metal magic and give her a metal spear?
>>
>>39571574
Would most likely end up being too heavy.
>>
>>39571615
wight training for tiny snek.

as a side note, are we all actually arguing weapon uses for rabbit hunting? By the time we let her fight real beasts shell probably be bigger.
>>
>>39571656
Yeah, but the question is what she will be using longterm.
>>
>>39571685
Personally, I think its irrelevant, I just can't see her being able to do enough damage with any weapon to make it worthwhile.
>>
>>39571715
It really depends, if we encourage weapon fighting for her, she is going to evolve into something that can use them.
>>
>>39571685

Doesnt that still kind of make the current arguments pointless? most of the arguments seem to be related to all of the weapons being too small to work properly.

also poison, if its strong enough, a spear would be best solely for reach purposes.
>>
>>39571764
The issue is what to start training her on.
>>
"Are you two ready?"
"Are you going to send us, defenceless, into the woods?"
"You are armed in several different ways, yes."

Nin sighs dramatically, holding the back of her hand to her head as she swoons.
Both you and Lyra ignore her.

"Can I have a spear?"
"I can do that. Metal or wood?"
"Metal?"

She busies herself turning a small pair of coins into a miniature version of her own spear. Not quite so much length, though.
And then she has Sheszka cool it, the sleepy looking wolf blowing a little stream of snowflakes and cold air that you can feel even from where you're standing.

She hands you the result- though you note she has warmed it up a few degrees again.
It's sharp, and a little heavy- But compared to the rocks you were lifting, this much is nothing.

"There you go, yes. Are you leaving from the top or the bottom?"
"The bottom. Flying isss fun, but I don't think I can hunt like that."
Lyra nods, waving as you and moth-problem number one take to the ladder.

Nin complains all the way down, of course.

"I thought I wasn't carrying you-"
"The silk is hard for me to grip."
"Excuses, excuses."
"I'm the one doing the hunting!"

"I can hunt too."
"I can hunt better!"
"Can not!"

...You are arguing with a child.
>>
>>39571715

Give her some time.

And yeah, she'll need poison/venom/magic to do terribly much for a while, but it's not like she'll be constantly thrown up against the kinds of enemies WE fight.

In regards to larger battles like with the wolves, she and Nin can probably work in tandem on the lower-tier enemies (Nin crowd-controlling with dust while Ezzy darts in and out, taking out one at a time) whilst Jin and Shez handle the higher-tiers and we take on the bosses.

I'm wondering how the guild will react to any reports on undiscovered types given how skeptical they were of Lann's report.
