December 18th, UC 0084.

It's been a very full two months since the incident at Earth-Sol L1.

After getting the Federation Admiralty to agree to shutting down its Newtype labs, you and your team have been tasked with properly accounting for and cataloging their work one lab at a time. It began at the Murasame Lab, allowing you to recall Roberto and Apolly from their long stakeout. You used their briefings to orient yourself as you began the monumental task of sorting out what are and aren't potential war crimes.

Most notably absent are Kai Shiden and two children thought to have been living as test subjects at the Lab. Artesia insists that rescuing these two in particular must have been the reason the reporter was so interested in Murasame in particular, due to their older sister having been someone Kai knew. You decided to send a team after him for observation only, and not to recapture the kids. That seems a lot like his business, or maybe even a personal act of redemption on his part. It doesn't feel right to interfere.

Also gone, as with the Grpys Lab, are the numbered cyber-Newtype test pilots once housed at Murasame. There weren't many, only ever going up to a boy named “Six” Murasame, but it seems that the Lab sent them off to fight for Titans before it fell apart. Knowing your luck, they're probably fighting for Paptimus Scirocco's faction now.

What IS left actually comes as something of a disappointment. They've been working on a massive transformable mobile suit, called the “Psycho-Gundam”, which seems to have been intended as an early psychoframe-equipped machine. Somewhere along the way it was turned into a testbed for power distribution systems, compact beam cannons, high-power reactors, and the miniaturization of a Minovsky Craft system. Refinements have been made to the psychoframe built into the three Psycho Gundams to streamline feedback from the large body after two of the earliest Murasame children suffered complete mental collapse from the massive strain of controlling such a large and complex machine with outdated technology.

Given the massive amount of documentary evidence seized, it's impossible to make a case that there WEREN'T war crimes going on here. You suspect Dr. Murasame's going to be charged by the government itself to make it look like a house-cleaning exercise for the public, with the proceedings being mostly behind closed doors to hide the fact that the government itself was at best willfully ignorant of what happened here, if not complicit.

The Pyongyang Lab was one of the minor laboratories run by Titans and the Federation, specializing in surgical procedures. The other labs would send candidates here sometimes for “modification” when their own expertise and equipment were inadequate. The history of those modifications is fully documented, including color photos. Most of your teammates were smart enough to wait for the reports rather than sort through the evidence themselves: Carya was just too stubborn, though, and insisted on seeing everything.

After the second day you had to stop her from strangling the lead scientist to death with her belt, and put her on temporary suspension of duty. You can't say you blame her.

Muscles were enhanced with protein and hormone injections into the deep muscle tissues, increasing their density at the risk of fatal heart complications. This was augmented in younger patients with a human growth hormone injection directly into the thyroid: that may be part of why the Puru clones could be physically aged so rapidly. This usually resulted in suppression or elimination of sexual drive, and could occasionally result in uncontrolled skeletal growth that warped the body in disgusting and unpredictable ways. Where these cases weren't outright fatal, euthanasia seems to have been preferable. On occasion the “patients” requested it themselves.

Other technologies were even more experimental. After successes in brainwashing and mental conditioning techniques developed at other labs, Pyongyang apparently decided to take it one step further and introduce a system of positive reinforcement. One cyber-Newtype, named “Three”, was implanted with a device that registered every time he made a kill, delivering mild electrical stimulation that caused a spike of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens. Essentially it ensured that instead of guilt, taking a human life would produce a surge of intense pleasure and satisfaction. The result was an eventual addiction to killing. And that's one of the Murasame pilots working for Papsmear now.

Wonderful.

The lead scientist at Pyongyang is already scheduled to be sentenced some time next week. It's expected that he'll be put to death, and his senior colleagues will receive lengthy prison terms.

The Gryps Lab was subject to more oversight, so the reports given to you by the attack force headed by Karaba mention fewer war crimes and more technological advancements. The full list of projects is a mile long, but the more useful ones are already being incorporated into your own team's machines. Some of the changes are subtle, others less so.

The Kilimanjaro Lab was a bust. Rather than hand themselves over peacefully, the scientists there rigged the mountain with a ten kiloton nuclear warhead set to go off while the EFF security team swept the premises. Nearly a hundred of those soldiers are either missing, or were confirmed to have been inside the base when the bomb went off.

Seems the idiots in charge of that base preferred that ending to the Federation finding out exactly what they were up to, which really makes you wonder. Were they truly the die-hard Titans fanatics they claim to be, or were they simply covering their asses for something far, far worse?

Augusta proved to have been the least problematic lab, as there were few Newtype-related tests even performed there. Mostly what they worked on was fabrication of new mobile suits and upgrades of those suits for use by Newtype and cyber-Newtype pilots. Many of their machines went to the Jovian's faction when it arose, but some have been left behind. They've largely continued their work even after the crackdown, only now they're building high-spec machines for the Earth Federation Space Forces rather than any sort of elite faction like Titans or Scirocco's band.

You suppose they see profits to be had, and so that's where their loyalties lie. For now, that's just the way the military-industrial complex works. You saw it with Anaheim, and now you're seeing it here. To put an end to it, you'll have to ensure that this next war is the last war. The first step to that is making sure you win, and survive.

But that's all behind you now. The Sisters have come off their suspension after having cooled down enough to be handled without burning yourself, and many of the right people are getting what they deserve. Public outcry may not be aimed as much at the government as it should be, but it's there.

There are two outstanding issues, though.

The first is that it's now known that Axis is well on its way to Earth, and it's expected to pass the point of no return on the 24th: a pretty shitty Christmas present for the Earth Sphere. Possibly the shittiest. It's accompanied by a task force from Mars, and its arrival will announce the beginning of what you guess will be the last phase of the civil war, now in its fifth year.

But today is probably going to be harder still. Today you will be surveying the Oakland Lab: the lab where Rossweisse was essentially tortured and experimented on as part of the process of conversion into a cyber-Newtype. This time, you're not entirely sure it's not going to be you choking scientists out with your belt.

>Decision #1: Who do you want to take with you into Oakland?
>>
Yay, SoZ quest.

I dunno who to bring, I'll let others decide
>>
Same. If anyone it would be preferably people who won't flip the fuck out like hte sisters did.
>>
>>39567025
I expect the first update's gonna be pretty slow. It's kind of a wall of text.
>>
>>39566979
>Emma, Audrey, roberto, Apolly, and haman
>>
>>39566979
>Decision #1: Who do you want to take with you into Oakland?

Karen for that authority.
At least one of the bridge bunnies for combing through the data (I'd go with Reiko for this though)
Emma.

For one other Newtype to go with us, I'm torn between Ross and Haman. The former is familiar with the place and might convince a few faces, but it's a place full of traumatic memories.
Haman might be able to steel herself compared to CC, but it's understandable if she ends up almost strangling a scientist like what CC did.
>>
>>39567054
And it was 5 posts.

At least bring a mix of old types, like Karen to hold us back. In fact, make Karen in charge of this operation because we might be too close to this.
>>
>>39567025
>>39567038
Herr Doktor, Nina, Audrey, etc. Technical and medical personal to get a handle on what the hell all of the gizmos are in the place.
>>
>>39567088
I like this list but I think we should bring apolly and roberto with us.

>>39567103
Remember how Karen reacted to how Rossie was being treated? It might not be a good idea to bring her.
>>
>>39567107
>Technical and medical personal to get a handle
Oh, this reminded me of Artesia's possible role. I could understand if she's busy though. I assume we probably had some C-NT's undergoing rehab under her supervision in that 2 month timeskip.

I agree with the science people picks though.
>>
>>39566979
Doctor Jay
Sayla
Katherine
Rossweisse
Serein Experi
>>
So does anyone want to get a list together for everyone to vote on? Cause I am going to be in car for at least an hour and a half, probably closer to two.
>>
Alright, so what I'm getting is:
>Emma, Roberto, Apolly, Audrey, Reiko, some of Artesia's medical staff, and the Doctor as tech expertise

Do you want to take Rossweisse, yes or no?

It's very personal, which means it could be cathartic for her or it could be a serious mistake.
>>
>>39567237
We are going to need more people then that. And we should not take Rossweisse.
>>
>>39567264
No to taking rossweisse unless she thinks she can handle it. The moment she thinks she doesn't she goes back to the ship.
>>
>>39567264
Depends on her choice. We can't force her either way
>>
>>39567264
Voting no to Rossweisse, we saw what happened to the sisters looking at photos and nearly killing a captive.
>>
>>39567264
For this one, I'll go with "No."

She helped out well enough in the Leipzig lab in terms of cyber newtypes convinced to not have to go back to the battlefield. I thinks it's essentially our time to shoulder this burden on her behalf.
>>
>>39567264
While shutting down the labs with her own hands might give some closure, the opening of old wounds would create a greater problem than would be solved. Dom told her that he would shut them down. And shutting them down is what Dom is doing.
>>
>>39567264
If she want to.
>>
Okay, so I've got a party worked out.

>Decision #2: How do you want to go in?

>Go in heavy, with full security teams.
>Go in light, but let ALICE have her way with their computer systems first.
>Go in light, and don't let your AI shipmate hack the shit out of them.
>>
>>39567264
Negative.
>>
>>39567440
>>Go in heavy, with full security teams.
>>
>>39567440
>Go in heavy, with full security teams.
I'm ok with ALICE doing her AI thing for this though. Probably a good idea to keep her scoping for when the lab starts to purge its data.
>>
>>39567440
>>Go in light, but let ALICE have her way with their computer systems first.
>>
>>39567440
>>Go in light, but let ALICE have her way with their computer systems first.
>>
>>39567440
Go heavy. I mean why not? It also sends the political message that we are shutting these places down.
>>
>>39567440
>Go in light, but let ALICE have her way with their computer systems first.

Could we have a small security team go in first to test their 'cooperation'?
>>
>>39567440
Also, with heavy, can we bring our MS. It's more of a show of force and intimidation factor.
>>
>>39567440
>Go in heavy, with full security teams.
>>
Okay, expect another long-ish update fairly soon.
>>
>massive transformable mobile suit, called the “Psycho-Gundam”
Oh yeah, Val Vaaron/Vatore soon.

>The result was an eventual addiction to killing. And that's one of the Murasame pilots working for Papsmear now.
So, a SEED druggie 'cept even more psycho? I doubt this test subject will be able to out-violate Yazan though.

>Axis is well on its way to Earth, and it's expected to pass the point of no return on the 24th: a pretty shitty Christmas present for the Earth Sphere
At this point, I won't be surprised if Rot Bruder shows up as Preventer Wind here.
Well, not before the Grim Guard reclaims it intact as its own asteroid base, of course. ALICE needs a big space if ever she's gonna be upgraded into a quantum computer.
>>
>>39567754
You carefully assemble a team to take with you into the Oakland lab. Roberto and Apolly are coming along as “muscle”, in case any of the security staff give you static. Audrey and the Doctor are there as technical experts, to give you an idea of what the hell you're all looking at, while Artesia has sent some of her medical staff to examine any human subjects who are still on site. They have a second, more gruesome role in the eventuality that there have been fatalities: they're to examine the bodies to determine cause of death. Reiko will be in charge of taking records, and Emma's there to keep you in check in case you try and kill anyone.

As your team assembles in the Nagato's hangar, Rossweisse approaches you. Her hands are behind her back, and she looks obviously uncomfortable.

“Will I... have to go?” she asks nervously.

You shake your head. “I don't want you to, but if you think it's a good idea I won't stop you.”

Rossweisse sighs, turning her back to you. She's a mess of emotions right now, but she's as angry as you've ever seen her before. “I don't want to. If I went back... I'm not sure what I would do if I saw Dr. Loki's face again.”

“I understand,” you reply. “Go get some rest. We'll handle things down there.”

“Thank you.”

Audrey chases after Rosse as she starts to walk out of the hangar, and you see them talking for a moment. Audrey gives her friend a warm hug, then returns to your team. “Alright, we're good to go. Let's get this shit done.”

Your ground team piles into a VTOL, while Carya and Catrina clamber into their own machine: they'll be along as fire support and to be generally intimidating as all hell. And ahead of you, naturally, is a second VTOL packed with fully armed and armored security troopers. They carry a mix of shotguns and assault rifles, and their faces are all covered. They're your faceless, impassive escorts on this mission.
(1/2)
>>
>>39568053
The tandem cockpit of the VTOL is cramped, with you standing over your pilot and copilot. You hit the comm stud to report back to the Nagato.

“ALICE,” you order, “you can begin as soon as you're ready.”

“Roger that, Captain,” she replies. “Intrusion has begun. Outdated protocols, I've penetrated their firewall. Backing up their data archives. Fifteen recently deleted files on Dr. Loki's personal network, restoring.”

Seems like the good Doctor's been trying to do some last-minute cleanup ahead of your arrival. It'll be interesting to see those files later. Nice catch on ALICE's part.

The approach and landing are smooth, and instead of landing on the helipads you direct your pilots to drop off one security team on top of the roof before dropping the rest of you in the parking lot. Partly because that's not what's expected, and partly because it's a massive, clearly visible move that shows any civilians in the area that there's a major operation going on. It's gonna get talked about now, by word of mouth and on social media: you even see a few camera phones out as you lead your team through the downdrafts of your VTOL behind your advanced security team.

“That really necessary, sir?” Apolly grunts, clearly meaning your showy entrance.

You simply shrug. “Yeah, it really is. The higher the profile, the better for us.”

Several men and women in labcoats are ready to greet you at the entrance to the labs. Most of them look pretty uncomfortable, but one of them seems to be angry at all the commotion.

“What gives you the right to barge in like this with guns, Captain?” he snarls. “This is a research facility! We do delicate work here!”

“Hi there,” you grin wickedly. “I'm Captain O'Hara, and I'm pretty sure you know what I'm here for. But in case you've been living under a goddamn rock these last few weeks, I've been going around investigating Newtype labs. Right now, you should probably realize that the Federation's pulled their financial support and legal protection.”

Audrey's grin is no less vicious than your own as she joins in torturing the scientists. “Of course you'll be answering any questions we have. And I'm sure you're familiar with the phrase “obstruction of justice”, correct?”

“Of course,” the angry man replies carefully. “I'm simply saying your armed teams weren't...”

“I assure you, they're entirely necessary,” you insist. “The Gundam may have been excessive. So, Roberto and Apolly? You start interviewing these coats here. Audrey? Doc? You look over any cool toys you find here. Reiko, Emma, you'll be coming with me to take Doctor Loki into custody.”

“You can't just...”

“Oh, but you see we can,” you interrupt. “Now, if you'll excuse us I do believe the Doctor is expecting us.”

Dr. Loki's office is up a flight of stairs, where you find him sitting calmly at his computer terminal. The room is sparsely decorated, with nothing more than a potted plant in the corner and a simple desk. He turns in his chair to face you.

“Captain,” he nods. “Welcome back. I take it you are here to check for any illicit activities, yes? But before we begin, tell me. How is young Rossweisse doing?”

>Response?

>Sorry that took a bit of time. I was trying to come up with prompts, but there are too many directions this could go in to cover

"I'll be asking the questions around here, Doctor."

>>
>>39569038
“I'm the one asking questions here,” you growl.

“And I'm the one with the answers,” he replies casually. “Consider this a transaction cost.”

Frowning, you decide to relent and give the Doctor what he wants. “She's a full-fledged Newtype who can't decide whether she wants to melt your brain with her mind or break your neck with your own belt. So, much better than she was.”

“I can assure you, young man, that is quite impossible for an unfinished newtype. Her brainwave output is zero, or else I would not have discarded her so readily.”

You bristle at the casual tone he uses while he's talking about someone you care about. He still sees her as disposable, and it makes you sick. “And I can assure you, old man,” you respond, a threatening edge creeping into your voice, “she's a fully capable Newtype and a fine pilot.”

“That shouldn't be possible... she should have no brainwave output,” he frowns. “What did you do?”

Sigh. "How can a man so supposedly smart can be so cruelly stupid. I see now that talking to you is a waste of time. Do you have any more INTELLIGENT questions, or am I going to break your nose and be done with it?"
>>
>>39569563
“Are you... for real?” you ask, literally stunned. “All I had to do was treat her like a human, and give her a place where she felt loved. You've gotta be familiar with those things conceptually, even if you've never tried them.”

Doctor Loki laughs to himself. “How patently absurd! You can't love Newtype powers into somebody. That's just not how science works.”

“So do you have any intelligent questions, or can I get to collecting evidence now?” you press. “Because for someone who's supposedly so smart, your ignorance is pissing me off.”

“I'm ignorant?” he muses. “How humorous, coming from a man like you. But no matter, I shall leave you to your ignorance. Your little toy may have grown more powerful indeed. A miracle is just what seems unlikely happening anyway, and that seems to be what has happened here.”

You exchange a disbelieving stare with Emma... how is this man ignoring what's right in front of him? Is he really so deluded that he can't accept the possibility that he might be wrong about something? Though a part of you sees how a man like this might be responsible for the sorts of things Rossweisse told you about.

“Not at all. I'm offering you one last chance at a breakthrough,” you counter. “Your life or death beyond that's outside of my control.”

“First, I want all your logs,” you demand.

“Done.”

You shake your head. “No, I'm not an idiot Doctor. I want ALL of your records, including the ones you didn't digitize.”

The Doctor winces. He pretty clearly wanted to keep that under wraps, which makes you that much more eager to see the records. “Very well, follow me.”

Down a flight of stairs there's a basement archive, with an elaborate ventilation systems and numerous locks on each door. Dr. Loki uses his ID card to let you in, and you eventually step into a room with box after box of paper files. In the next room are personal effects, each tagged with the name of a different child.

“This, I suppose, is the evidence you'd need to convict me,” he announces.

You nod to Emma, who quickly calls some of the soldiers down to the archive to recover all the materials here. “Reiko, look these over. Figure out what the highest priority material is and tag it.”

Reiko nods, immediately getting to work on her task. She takes a few minutes to figure out how the filing system works, then focuses more on the old files from the Oakland facility's earliest procedures.

You look over the boxes of personal items: a comb, a mirror, a pair of children's shoes with those little lights in the soles. Clothes are the most common item, of course, all in disturbingly small sizes. Finally, you find what you were looking for: a little box labeled “TS 044: ROSSWEISSE – UF”.

There's a lump in your throat.

Opening the box, your eyes narrow as you feel a pang of sympathy. In the box is a little sundress, covered in spots of mud and in rough shape, with a pair of girly shoes. The strap on one is broken. In with the shoes are only two other items: a small stuffed bear and a photograph. The bear's “fur” has seen better days, and it's missing an eye. One of its legs has ripped a seam, and the batting in that limb is missing. On the tag is written in faded pen “For Rosie”.

The photograph is badly crumpled, with a tear in the middle from where it's been folded and unfolded countless times. It's of a pretty-looking woman with dark hair and a warm smile, and a handsome man with blonde stubble and an EFF uniform. You can see he's a Lieutenant, and based on his pins and insignia he was a tanker with the 15th Heavy Armor... a unit that was all but wiped out on the American east coast during the Zeon invasion. With them is a little girl with black hair and a childish, innocent smile. That sundress must have been her favorite.

The boxes go up to number 107, and almost all of them end with a “- D”.

A part of you doesn't want that sack of shit Loki to ever get a trial... it would be so simple. One shot from your sidearm.

“Hey, skipper!” Reiko calls, stepping into the room. What she sees gives her pause: her commanding officer, who she probably considers her friend, with one hand holding a stuffed toy and the other on his pistol, and a look of pure rage on his face.

“What is it, Reiko?” you growl.

She clears her throat. “It's Rossweisse's file, sir.”

“Do us both a favor and sit on that for now,” you tell her. “After all the Federation can't try Loki's headless corpse, and if I hear one more word about what he did to these kids that's what they're gonna get.”

Reiko seems to relax a little as your hand leaves your holster, and you set Rossweisse's two personal possessions back into their box. "Keep hers separate."

“We're going upstairs,” you tell Emma as the soldiers arrive on site. “Stay here and make sure things stay organized.”

“Yeah, Dominic,” she replies, eying the rows of shoes and clothes thoughtfully. “Of course.”

“Now, Doctor,” you continue. “Take me to the tech labs. Show me everything.”

“Yes, though after having raided Augusta,” he muses, “I suppose our projects will hardly be of interest.”

Turns out, he was right. Most of what Oakland has been working on has been taken over by Augusta for production. There's one machine that has Doc Ward utterly stumped, however: it's called the Baund Doc, and it looks, well...

“Patently ridiculous,” he mutters. “Shameful display of poor taste, Loki. They should shoot you for that paint scheme alone.”

“It IS rather...” Audrey adds. “Well, it's very asymmetrical.”

“It has a wank arm and a skirt,” Apolly interrupts. You can't help but agree... this thing looks too absurd to even be described.

Audrey shrugs. “Yeah, I wasn't gonna say it, but he's definitely a leftie, isn't he?”

Loki mumbles something about “not understanding brilliance”. You suppose its mechanisms would let it tuck into itself to make a more aerodynamic shape, and the transformation sequence looks to be completely unique. Looking over the other machines throughout the building you see a common theme: these machines were all developed here as experimental transforming designs. That must have been Oakland's specialty once you obliged Loki to stop experimenting with actual cyber-Newtypes.

MA form and the NT compatible capability are pretty much the only few saving graces it has.

On the bright side, we have a shining example of what NOT to do with transformable designs.
>>
>>39572700
“We may be able to steal some of these designs,” Audrey tells you. “We're basically done upgrading our own machines, but there's still a little time left for last-minute changes.”

Doc Ward nods thoughtfully. “Indeed. There's been quite a deal of thought put into these joint designs that we could build off of. And now that the psychoframes are complete, we can spare the manpower.”

“Psychoframes?” Dr. Loki asks, freezing in place. “Did you just say what I thought you said?”

You shake your head. “None of your damn business, Loki.”

You still around King?

>>39572830
You quickly drag the Doctor around the building, peppering him with questions all the way. The various locations Rossweisse remembers don't exist anymore, including the operating theater, having been renovated quite a while ago. Though it doesn't really seem like much of a loss, given the amount of other evidence you've already collected. Likewise Loki isn't hesitant at all to hand over the personnel reports: some of them look incriminating, especially those that mention brutality against child test subjects. But it's all in a likely attempt to look like he's cooperating.

Finally, you're in a position to take Reiko aside and discuss what she's found. Most of the scientists are being processed, and Loki has had a bag thrown over his head at your request. You don't want him to see Rosse, and you don't want her to see him.

Reiko opens the file. “Here's what it says about her: her real name was Rosalina White. She's Australian by birth, emigrated to North America as a child. Her birth records were lost in the colony drop. Mother was a registered nurse, father was...”

“A tank officer,” you finish her sentence. “Killed in action in New York.”

She nods. “That's right. I take it you figured it out from the picture?”

“I did. What else does the file say.”

A strange look crosses Reiko's face: partly concerned, partly excited. “According to this, Rossweisse has a living relative. Her mother moved to Seattle as part of the reconstruction, and as of two years ago she still lives there.”

>>

What information can we get about her? What information has she received regarding her daughter?

For some reason, I doubt reintroducing Ross to her mother isn't a good idea. Ross has no real memories of her childhood beyond the CyberNewtypes labs and Her mother has probably spent years in mourning and trying to get over the loss of her daughter.

On the off chance, what do the offical records say about Rose White? Dead or missing?
>>
>>39573976
Well, we can't hide this or keep them separated forever. Maybe after the war they can meet and stuff?
>>
>Her mother moved to Seattle as part of the reconstruction, and as of two years ago she still lives there.
I'm trying to recall, but didn't one of the EFSF ships' debris crashed there? Or am I mistaking it for another place?
>>
>>39573463
“What do we know about her?”

Reiko turns a page, looking up the most up to date information available. “Works at a free clinic, volunteers at the local orphanage, never remarried, lives alone. That's all.”

“Any evidence she knew where Rosse ended up?”

“No. She was picked up off the street when she was younger, and back then she thought her parents were both dead. It was only after doing some searching that Loki determined her mother was still alive.”

Your return to the Nagato is initially complicated by the need to put the scientists you brought back with you away, and you even take some time to set up a closed-access terminal with limited data on you and your team for Doctor Loki. He complains that he can't type very well with his handcuffs on, but you remind him that wasn't part of the deal. That's a problem for HIM now, not for you. Which leaves you sitting in the officers' mess with Haman, Carya, and Rossweisse, pondering whether or not to tell her. And if so, HOW to tell her.

It can't quite be as simple as “oh hey, your name is Rosalina and your mom is still alive”. Things are never that easy.

Carya knows from the moment you sit down that something's wrong.

“Something bugging you, Dom?”

“We found something down there,” you admit. “Personal effects and files for all the cyber-Newtypes at Oakland.”

Rossweisse immediately understands where this is going. “And you found something about me?”

“A teddy bear, some clothes, and a picture with your parents,” you tell her.

“That's not all, is it?”

You bite your lip, but even that gesture of discomfort tells her what the answer is. “We found out that you may have a living relative. Your mother moved to Portland after the war.”

There's very little apparent reaction on her part. At least, not at first.

“I want to see her,” she admits quietly. “But after the coming battle. I don't want her finding out her daughter is alive only to see her go back into battle on the same day.”

“That's pretty thoughtful,” Haman muses. “But you're right, of course. We'll have plenty of time to handle things like that in time.”

“And besides,” Rosse continues, “I'm too focused on protecting this family than reconnecting with my old one. That should be all our focus, shouldn't it?”

Though she's controlling it very carefully, you can tell that Rossweisse's been nearly overwhelmed by the news. Joy, fear, regret... the full gamut of emotions all at once.

You just hope her faith and confidence won't prove to be misplaced, and that you'll both live to see her family reunion.
