Alright, so the situation is grim.

You’re still a little hurt from all those Eyeless knowing on you, and you’re currently Lupa. You have your knife in its sheath, and a backpack full of medicine, whiskey, and an unloaded .45. Ray has his backback full of guns, ammo, medicine, and other useful items. He’s got a sheathed knife, and his loaded pipe rifle is on his back. Ray’s told you that the rifle holds five bullets. Pyotr also has a backpack full of goods, his crowbar hanging from his belt, and he’s holding his shotgun. He probably reloaded after shooting at the ‘monster,’ which was actually you. So that means he has four shots.

You’re looking at six girls. They’re all dressed in piece-work environmental suits, and wearing yellow tinted ski goggles. (Must have raided a sporting goods store.) They’re all pointing pistols at you. Also, just as you knew West Wind when you saw her, you can tell that these six are all Small Joys. No names, or any idea what they can do, although you have a guesses for at least two of them, just that they can ‘express their joy’ in one or two ways.

> Observational Roll 3d12

(A note on these d6/8/12 rolls. The better you are at something, the higher dice you roll. A 4-5 is a Pass. 6-8 is a Success. Higher than that is a Great Success. Two rolls of 1 mean Fail. 3 1s mean Crit fail. Expect further tweaks like this for game balance as we go along.)

How old is Lupa? I noticed she was born in AE 130 and her mom died in AE 144, making her at least 14 if the years are the same as in real life. Which doesn't give her much time to be raised by Pytor before she gets too old for people to be treating her as a kid.

Well shit. So much for them being associated with the People of Joy circle. They'd be better equipped if that was the case.

She's been with Pytor for a little over 2 years. So she's 16-17ish. Also, I go vertically.

The Girls:G.S. Alright, so they’re arranged in a semi-circle around the three of you. Three of them are closer, and three of them are hanging back.

The one on your right is covered with dried mud, but only from her feet to her knees, and her arms, up to her elbows. The one on your left has ribbons, wires, and strips of cloth wrapped around her legs, and arms, you notice that they’re twitching slightly, and not in the direction of the wind. The one straight ahead has a large assortment of scars, yellowed bruises, and generally looks like she’s lost the last ten fights she’s been in. However, she’s showing no sign of pain. All three look eager to fight.

The ones hanging back look like they’re getting ready to dive for cover. One of them has shards of mirrors sewn into her clothing. She’s jittery and keeps shifting her eyes back towards one of the buildings. There’s the one with ink splattered all over her body. The ink slightly shifts and moves. The last one has visible veins in her hands, they’re grass green though.

Weaponry:G.S. The guns that the three closer girls are pointing at you are just plastic-glass guns that have been painted to look like real guns. The other three have real guns, but you can see that the automatic pistol that Green Vein has, doesn’t have a magazine in the handle. Ink and Mirrors have .357s. You see one empty chamber in Ink’s gun, but Mirror’s looks fully loaded. So…guess that Ink has 4 shots at most, and Mirror has 6. The rest are bluffing.

Area Scan: Fail. You're a tad too preoccupied with the girls to notice anything else around you.

“So,” Scars says. “Consider this a toll. You dump your packs out onto the ground, and if it’s enough, we let you get in your heap and drive back to your prissy ‘Township.’ If it isn’t, we’ll take a look inside and make up the balance.”

She gestures with her gun. “Or, this becomes unpleasant for everyone and I think odds are good you’ll end up unhappier than we are.”

Ray’s narrows his eyes and it looks like he’s looking at something past the RV.

Pytor is looking at the others. You know he’s doing the math. You know Pytor isn’t one who allows people to rob him without consequence. Your mother is proof of that. However, you also know that he’s not stupid enough to get into a fight he can’t win.

You take a step forward. "You know, there's no reason that we can't all walk away from this mildly happy. After all, wouldn't you like to trade your fake guns, for real ones?"

You point at Mirrors and Ink. "Though they've already got some, and a couple bullets, so they'll get last pick."

Scars is good, but she blinks. The others look a little rattled.

Pytor aims his shotgun at Mirrors, and Ray uses the moment of hesitation to draw his pipe rifle and cover Ink.

Scars purses her lips, and then shrugs and tosses her fake gun away. She draws a collapsable baton and flicks it to full length.

"You think we're scared?" Scars says. You notice that she's careful not to lift her foot from the mirror shard she's standing on.

"It looks like half of you are ready to bolt." You say. "Also...you might have other tricks, but you aren't the only ones who do."

Scars' eyebrows go up and you can see her looking you over, trying to guess what your 'trick' is. You can tell the other girls are now just as nervous.

"If this ends in a firefight, you'll lose." You say. "So, how about you listen to what I say the toll is?"

Scars frowns. "I'm listening." She says through gritted teeth.

“You let us go and we leave whatever we left inside for you...and we don't go the 'unhappy' route.” You say. “That’s a whole military facility, and we got the place running, so it’ll still have power for a little while longer. There’s plenty of stuff in there to get.”

Scars looks at the others and then back to you. “Yeah, I don’t buy it. I think you’ve got all the good stuff, and now YOU’RE the ones trying to bluff us.”

“You don’t want to do this.” You say. “You don’t have to do this.”

Scars opens her mouth, probably to say something that she thinks is clever, but Pytor and Ray aren’t dealing with that shit. Negotiations have failed, so they both open fire on the two girls with actual firearms.

Sadly, the distance is too far for Pytor's shot gun, and Ray's rifle is a homemade piece of junk that goes, wide.

Thankfully, it does cause Ink and Mirrors to dive for cover.

Muddy traces an X on the ground with her foot then jumps into the earth...and it swallows her whole.

Veins ducks for cover with the other two behind a large pile of rubble.

Ribbons flicks her wrist and a piece of ribbon flies off of her wrist and towards Pytor's arms.

Scars swings at you with her baton.

You focus and gesture your hand down again.

"COVER YOUR MOUTHS!" Scars yells before the world explodes into a grey cloud.

You grab your knife, and make a run for the RV as you hear the motor rev.

Taking the time to grab your knife has given time for Scars to make a swing and Mirror to fire off one last shot at you. Ink doesn't shoot but she does hurl her hand at you and you see a glob of black stuff fly through the smoke.

So, Ink can hurl ink AND spy on people via ink drawings. Good to know.
>>

Our cover was stated to have thinned somewhat.
Afterwards, as appealing as fleeing is, it's important that they don't feel that they can follow us. As a result, disabling more of them before intimidating them away from considering pursuit seems important.

Thank God for the ash cloud, you duck and Dodge out of the way of everything, and jump inside the RV.

"GO!" You shout.

The RV roars into motion and the three of you are away. You stagger over to Pytor's bed and fall down on it. Your body aching from all the abuse that it just handled.

Ray runs to watch out of the back window.

A few tense moments pass.

"They're not following." Ray says.

You sigh in relief.

Pytor says nothing as you go over the bridge, probably a little faster than is safe. He continues to say nothing until the RV gets to a Genesis watchtower. Then he parks the car.

You're feeling slightly better, and your wound's stopped bleeding. A fact that Ray has been silently watching and gaping at.

Pytor walks over to where you are, and sits down in a chair, next to Ray. He just calmly looks at you.

"Okay...for the record...I was planning on telling you, just...when we were at a safe place like this."

"You're th-" Ray starts but stops when Pytor holds up a hand.

Telling our pragmatic mentor/father figure that we're likely to be attracting monsters does not seem like a great way to not be kicked out of this RV.

Tell them everything else though.
>>
You tell them everything that you know, about Joy, about Hubris, about what you found. You even let them know that it was you that Pytor shot at earlier.

Pytor takes it all in, not saying a word. Ray's mouth just opens and closes at certain parts.

Finally, you finish. There's a moment of silence, and then Pytor gets up and starts up the RV again and begins to drive.

After a few moments you both figure out that he's heading back to the Confessors' Ranch.

"I could see through the ash." Ray says quietly.

"Hmm?" You ask.

"My eyes...they've been feeling weird, and I've been able to see things better and...and...when you made those big clouds, I could see though them...sort of...I mean, you know what I mean." He puts a hand to his face. "Is...that what's happening to me? This 'Acceptance' thing is affecting my eyes?"

You shrug. "Maybe." You look back up at Pytor who hasn't said a thing.

Ray looks at Pytor, and then back at you. "You've been blessed Lupa. God has chosen you to help us and protect us."

"You know that I would NOT like everyone to know about this. Especially since there are some people who are crazy...those Righteous people said a LOT of things that I didn't like."

Ray nods. "Oh sure, sure. I mean, you're Lupa, but people could get the wrong idea..." He bites his lips. "Maybe Father should know, I mean...he HAS to know. The Hubris threat, and these Eyeless creatures. You HAVE to show him Lupa." He looks at Pytor, then he whispers to you. "And I'm sure you'll have a place to stay with us. No matter what."

"I'll think about it." You mumble.

Ray frowns. "Lupa...my Father has to know."

> Ray, No. Please. I need your WORD that you WON'T tell him!

>>
>>39596942
>> Ray, No. Please. I need your WORD that you WON'T tell him!

Ray's dad is on the verge of worshipping Joy-in-Ashes already. I get the feeling that telling the Preacher is going to actually mean telling his whole congregation, anyone who wants food from the Confessors and also Genesis.

I don't think we're ready for the entire world to know about us.

>>

Pytor needs to know. Ray knows due to the unfortunate circumstances we've just suffered (and also because he has acceptance traits, which we can exploit).

The fewer people who know, the better. The world in which we live is not a very nice one and, considering that we were beaten quite soundly even by a couple of girls, it's probably best not to attract attention at this stage.

Even later, having an alibi as a normal scavenger will come in handy and telling an influential preacher more or less ruins any chance of that.

>>
>>39597297

We're a pretty large risk to keep around; even if we're not attracting all the Hubris in the world ever, but we're still increasing the amount of danger he's going to encounter.

Also, its a pretty safe guess that we've made an enemy out of those Small Joys and that's gonna come back to bite us, and they currently have no beef with Pytor (he did nothing during the fight, after all).

Just two reasons that putting us out is going to increase his life expectancy.

"Ray. No, please. I need your WORD that you WON'T tell him!" You say.

"Why? If you don't want him to say that Ashes is Lupa, that's fine. You can trust him to keep a secret." He says.

"I do trust him, but that's the problem." You say. At this point you're half making up stuff, but you've got an idea of what to say.

"Huh?"

"Well, say he starts going on about stuff like Joy and Acceptance, and all that stuff. Not to mention saying that I'm more than just an 'angel' that showed up. What's going to happen?"

Ray frowns as he thinks about it.

"Right, people will start coming and asking questions. You've got a problem with Genesis right now, and that's just because you're the second biggest settlement, and have food. What happens if Genesis thinks you're not just 'neighbors' but an actual threat? If you know, or have, something that they want?"

Ray shakes his head. "We can protect you. Genesis won't find out. They're not that smart."

Ugh, denial. "Well, what about those People of Joy, or the Righteous? They attacked you with Hubris, and that was just because they didn't like you? I think they'd do a bit worse than a couple of flunky assassins if they thought there was a real prize there."

Ray shakes his head again. "But you stopped them! We can stop them. God is with us. YOU are with us. We've got all these new guns, a-and we can go back to the city! Find more of West Wind's military supplies. She must have had more right? You're getting worried about nothing, Lupa. You know that we can protect you. You had those other...what did you call them...Small Joys? You had them at a standstill by yourself. Think of what you could do with the Faithful at your back!"

He's talked himself into believing that the Confessors can beat Genesis, the Righteous, and anyone else.

Pytor continues to be silent as he drives.

You follow Pytor.

"Pytor, can we talk?"

"Go ahead." He says.

"Are you kicking me out of the RV?" You ask.

"Haven't decided yet." Pytor says. "Thinking about it."

"Oh." You say.

"If the Confessors have a spare car and tent to sell, I'll buy them. Then you can have them, and all of your things from the RV. Then that will be that." Pytor says.

"And if they don't?" You ask.

He shrugs. "Still thinking."

"Is there anything I can say that might help you decide?" You ask.

He nods. "It's possible."

"Why'd you take me with you?" You ask. "I know you...you..." Deep breath. "I know you killed my mother because she tried to steal from you."

"No. I killed her because she tried to stab me when I caught her stealing from me." Pytor says. "And I took you because I'm not a person who leaves little girls alone. I was planning on dropping you off at Genesis or here. Then you read the bike charger manual, and I said you could stay."

"And now I can't?" You say.

He shrugs as he gets to the crest of the hill and the tent. He pauses in front of the entryway. "As I said, I don't know yet."

He pauses before going inside, waiting to see if you have anything else to say.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, he "saved" us by killing our whorepimp mother after she offered us to Pytor, and then took us with him after it became clear we were useful. I get the feeling that he would have left us there if we weren't. Dude is a survivor, and one of the best armed folk we've seen so far.

Pytor definitely cares for us, but he's also spent a lot of time teaching us what it takes to live in the wasteland. What was it we said in the last thread? We took what was worth the cost of taking?

I would just appreciate the tragic irony of us implying that he'll continue to see us when fate has other intentions.

His death could inspire us to greater heights, or it could be something more inane: he could get stuck helping his father despite attempts to run away from home.

I just have a massive case of the Shadowruns right now. If Ray blabs, I'm all for running the hell away. Plus, I just don't like him all that much right now, although that's probably a consequence of him having little screentime outside being a mildly obsessive preacher's son.

You walk inside with Pytor.

Preacher Bill is in the middle of the large tent. He's stitching up a hole in one of the smaller tents, along with some other Confessors. He looks up and smiles at the pair of you.

"Pytor, Lupa! You're back!" He looks around. "Where's Ray?" He asks.

"Kitchens." Pytor says.

Preacher Bill sighs in relief and motions for the pair of you to come to the stew tables, that have been cleared.

Pytor lays out the guns, medicine, and bullets. The body armor he's keeping for himself, and the whiskey is saved for the next time he needs to bribe Genesis soldiers.

Preacher Bill is very happy at the haul. "This is good." He sighs as he picks up one of the pistols and inspects it before carefully putting it back down. "I hate to have these around. Still, if we can show Genesis that we don't need their 'Protection,' then they'll have fewer excuses to come marching in. Of course, then I have to make sure that no one's dumb enough to pick a fight with them." He shrugs. "But you can never go broke on betting on the stupidity of people who are afraid."

He claps his hands. "Anyway, it seems as if we are in quite a heavy debt to the pair of you. What do you want in exchange for all of this?"

"Do you have any spare cars?" Pytor asks.

"I'm sorry?" Preacher Bill says. "A car? Is your RV not working?"

"Do you have any spare cars to sell?" Pytor asks.

You close your eyes and wince.

"Sorry, if anything we need more working cars." Preacher Bill says.

You let out a breath.

Pytor shrugs and nods. "Then let's move on to meat, wool, and maybe a little scrip."

You start to lose your interest, and fear when Pytor and Preacher Bill start to dicker over meat, wool, and scrip. It seems like the moment has passed.

That moment comes back when Ray walks into the tent.

"Raymond!" Preacher Bill waves at his son. "How was your trip with Pytor and Lupa?"

"It was..." He looks at you. "We had some excitement. We ran into some raiders."

"Did you now?" He looks at Pytor sharply.

Pytor shrugs. "Some punks who had a gun. We got away."

"Lupa was amazing." Ray says. "She kept them busy while we got to the RV."

"Ray..." You say.

Ray bites his lip. Then he swallows and shrugs. "Yeah. It was...pretty crazy."

"It really wasn't. Just some punks." Pytor says.

"We did find some interesting things in the military base we were exploring." Ray says. "Turns out there were these special people back before the End."

Okay...so Ray's going to keep your secret, but it looks like he's going to blab about the Joys, and maybe other things.

"They were women called Joys, and they could do the most amazing things, and they fought these monstrous, demonic, things called Hubris. We found that there was this woman called West Wing who led armies back before the End. She ran the base we were exploring."

"Really?" Preacher Bill looks at Pytor. "Is this true?"

Pytor shrugs. "I didn't spend much time looking for history, and I can't read Civ like they can."

"Always good to have new truths to speak about." Preacher Bill says. "Write down anything you remember, Ray. I'll look it over later. If you have anything else, I'd like to see it."

>>
>>39599424
doesn't matter to most anons. Anything with a dick and romance is icky, sadly. I don't care if he's an Li or not but he is useful.

>>39599485
Despite the fact pytor has a shaky moral compass, and will always be a squishy human at best. He's cool yeah, but him staying with us is begging for him to get offed.
>>
>>39599485
I would absolutely choose Pytor over Ray ideally we would keep both of them as allies. If Pytor leaves us though I would much rather have Ray than be alone as I have said before. And so far Ray has been nothing but trustworthy for us.
>>
>>39599544
Pytor is experienced and competent. Ray is far more sheltered and younger.
I'm fine with Ray tagging along if there aren't other options, however, and his eyes do have the potential to be useful.

>>
>>39599645
Uh it's iffy that we get to stay with Pytor I don't think he'd take kindly to ray tagging along it is going to be that choice if it's even an option
>>
I have to admit, I kind of wanted to go full Fallout and go it alone.
>>
>>39600272
I can see the appeal but it really is useful to have someone watching your back out there, if we get smacked over the head and knocked out before we can go joyful we are probably dead and if we can have someone to keep that from happening that would be for the best.
>>
>>39600338
If we were alone, I don't see any other thing to do than head straight for Ember who is currently in super-safe Genesis territory. No one would knock us out there.
>>
>>39600338
That's understandable, my crux was just I wanted to be able to have us go where we pleased at will. Not quite the same with Pytor.
>>
>>39600409
We told him everything therefore we told him that we can in all likelihood go into areas with higher than average fallout which stands to help him a lot we could probably work something out with him if he lets us stay with him.

>>39600402
We would need something to bribe the border guards to get to her since we are not a genesis citizen, the best bet for that is the liquor which if Pytor leaves us we aren't going to be given in all likelihood.
>>
>>39600456
We could always join up with Genesis. They're not bad people. Until Plath finishes corrupting them, anyway.

Leaving Genesis is something Genesis citizens can do. Pytor is probably living proof of that. And if we were careful they wouldn't find out about Joy-in-Ashes.
>>
>>39600610
The text said only full genesis citizens were allowed to go where embers is which I would assume would take more time than we would care to spend.

>>
>>39599348
"It was West Wind," You say. "She was...she was very loyal to her Country, and a good soldier."

Preacher Bill nods. "And all the good and ill that comes with being good to your country and a good soldier."

You nod. "Yes, and the Joys could do incredible things." You say. "But..." You look at Ray. "Not much is known about them, and all we have is a few scraps of history. It's best that people hear the truth before jumping to call them saints, or anything else."

Ray looks like he wants to argue about it. Then he sighs and nods. "Yeah. Yes...I think...I think the Confessors should go and check out that base though. So we can learn more, and accept things as they are."

You nod. "That would be a good idea. But watch out for the raiders."

Pytor makes a grunt. "They're unpleasant and tricky. Work well together."

Preacher Bill nods. "Well...I think that's a fine idea. It'll be a good outlet for the people who think they're brave enough to fight Genesis. We'll send them out into the city. That should cause them to lose their oats."

Ray motions with his head for you to come outside with him. You sigh and follow him.

"Alright," He says, when you're outside and not around anyone. "I'm sorry...and I won't tell anyone about you, but this...this isn't something I can sit on! You understand that right?"

You nod.

He sighs and nods. "Thanks. I...I'm scared a lot Lupa. I'm worried about my Dad. I'm scared that Genesis might roll on in here. Now I'm scared about these Hubris things, and everything. But...if there's something that can help with this...something that shows me that I don't have to be scared and that I'm on the right path. I have to take it. I have to help my Father, and all the people who believe in us." He groans. "I'm talking out of my ass."

"Yes. You are." You say.

"Look...all I'm saying...please don't hate me. And please don't leave us forever. Go with Pytor, but please...come back Lupa."

"Don't worry, Ray. I'll come back." You say.

Then you peck him on the cheek. "You have free stew after all. Also, next time, take those pills. I don't want to blow your brains out your ears."

Ray just stands there, a little dazed, with a stupid but cute look on his face.

You make your way back to the RV, and spend the time just pedaling on the bike, charging up the spare batteries. You have to find a way so you can charge those things by yourself. Also, your body becomes amazing while you're Ashes...why can't Lupa get the endurance and strong legs too?

After what seems like a while, Pytor comes in. He's got two coolers, and a large bag full of wool and cloth. He dumps it all on the RV floor for you to put away.

He also shows you a small stack of the green paper that Genesis attempts to call money.

"So...I can stay?" You ask.

Pytor takes a deep breath in and then out. He nods. "For now."

"What do we do next?" You ask.

Pytor looks at you. Then he goes to his dashboard and he gets all the maps that he's made over the years of his wandering.

"Here." He points at the map. "We're going to salvage here."

You frown. It's on this side of the river, but Pytor has put a large x through the area.

"What is it?" You ask.

"It's an old movie studio. People have written it off as a dead zone. Critters, just enough Fallout to be uncomfortable, and the place is locked down." Pytor says. "Huge thick metal doors, no one's been able to get much out of the place. I've tried twice. Couldn't pick it, couldn't force it."

"So...why do you think we can get into there now?" You ask.

Pytor hands you another piece of paper from his collection. It's a brochure. "Because THIS time, YOU are going to ask your Sister to open the place up."

"West Wind reminded Love too much of Song. And you KNOW how Love felt about Song." The second says. "Come on, we have to see if we can find any trace of those Small Joys. Hopefully they aren't long gone."

"They just seemed like clueless raiders." The first says.

"They are. However, we can't risk Gaft getting to them first. Last thing we need is another rogue running around." The second says. "And I don't trust Plath to be able to capture her. He's been barely competent at the simple jobs we gave him."

"What do we do with her?" The first points at West Wind's body.

"It doesn't matter." The second says. "Remember, in the end? She doesn't exist. None of these sad shadows do."

Thanks for running again Echo.

Haha, suck it, mysterious villains! Ashes was here!

Stay safe, little Joys. Hopefully you'll be good and desperate and not dead when big Sis meets you again.

>more than one Person of Joy faction
I know I shouldn't be surprised by this, but FUCK. And both of them seem to want exactly the same thing, too.

I get the feeling that Gaft's group is a bunch of morons. They'd have to be, to put their faith in Ashes.
>>
>>39601769
I don't like that the people of joy seem to be working with Plath. I am however glad that Pytor seems to have come to terms with what we are to some degree.

>"They just seemed like clueless raiders." The first says.
Are we being watched? How are they getting this information?
>>
This is actually massively reassuring. These people did not have the ability to get inside those doors, somehow. I guess ancient civ tech is no match for thermite.
>>
>>39602000
Our boytoy told everyone about the Small Joys.
>>
>>39602123
He did not. He called them raiders.

>How well do we deal with fallout when in joy form at this point?

Ashes can survive in Medium levels of Fallout with no ill effects.

Lupa can survive in areas of Light Fallout.

Your presence does not alter Fallout levels.
