Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you discovered that a dragon had just probably done your work for you.

It is currently the 9th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You stare at the spines on the dragon's back as it roots through the collapsed remnants of the Executioner's home. On the bright side, it doesn't seem to have noticed you yet. Plus, with Khmedi destroyed, you probably don't have to worry about killing Chrys' husband. Unless he was out of the village, for some reason, which would really just be your luck. The entire village destroyed and the only survivor was the man you need to kill. Hopefully that's not the case.

You suppose you could go up there and check the bodies to see if you can't find your man, or search for survivors to ask about Chrys' husband. What was the man's name? It takes you a moment to recall, but you're fairly certain it was Mazhar. He was the guard who harassed you when you first approached the city's gates and who later attacked you in the streets. It all seems so long ago, you barely remember the man.

Another plume of flame shoots skyward, though you can't see the dragon's head. How would one even go about fighting something that large? You doubt Fire magic would do much of anything against it. You're not optimistic about Water magic either. Perhaps Earth magic might erode its scales and thus allow you to injure the thing? The scales on its belly seemed like they might have been thinner and finer. Perhaps you might be able to wound it there? Of course, there's always your shockwave sword... though, you're not entirely certain you'd survive using your shockwave sword.

From behind you, Regulus' eerie voice rings out across the stillness of the plains. “That is a dragon. That is not possible. What have you done in the absence of the Empire?”

(1/2)
>>
You glance over your shoulder at the construct. “What have I done?” You recall your time in the Mines of Longia, poking around the dragon's nest and fiddling with ancient Rhynian technology. You recall your deal with the spirit dwelling beneath the Temple of Pani, and the dragon's heart you gave to it. After a moment's contemplation, you blurt out. “I've done nothing! This is probably the result of some Rhynian device malfunctioning and forcing the dragons out of wherever it was they were hiding. Don't go pointing fingers at me!”

Regulus lets out a harsh burst of static. “All that is produced by the Empire is without flaw. That is not important at this very moment. I predict that should we stay her for much longer we will soon be rendered inoperable. We ought to leave as soon as possible.”

>Fine, head towards the pass through the mountains.
>Screw the pass, head towards Anthus.

Approaching the several story tall dragon that just destroyed a small city/village and could kill us on a whim is stupid.

Well, we can apparently speak to dragons.

I'm curious about that now. And I just remembered we speak different languages.

Maybe it would like to play a game of charades.
>>
>>39630789
Eh, we can just channel some vys into our cloak to protect ourselves from most things.
Also we're a water GM and fire master, we have a decent chance to survive this.
>>
>>39630823
Also, if things get really bad we can just whip out the sword, protect ourselves with metal magic, reverse the cloak and destroy his ass.
>>
>>39630789
>there's a difference between taking risks and being stupid.
Like stealing a fully grown mother dragon's eggs, making deals with spirits and fucking with them, putting on a mask that belonged to a cult trying to revive a dead god, sitting on chair belonging to a contraption that sticks a needle in your neck, touching so much shit we don't know the nature of, etc?

Fuck off.

You can speak to Zahak, but the dragon you 'spoke' with outside of Anthus didn't understand you. It was just confused by the fact that you were apparently intelligent, to some degree at least. You have absolutely no idea what the dragon actually said. The elder dragon beneath the Mines of Longia could speak with you, but that's because it's an ancient magical beast with a mastery of Nature magic.

You turn your attention away from Regulus and towards the distant form of the dragon as it rampages through the shattered remnants of the village. “I'm going to go talk to it.” You finally decide.

Regulus lets out another burst of static. You wonder if that's his way of expressing annoyance? “That is not logical. You will most likely meet your death if you attempt to draw the beast's attention. It has just destroyed a village without any apparent cause and presumably slaughtered its populace, it will not hesitate to do the same to you.”

You ignore him, instead digging your heals into your guar's sides. She takes off at a full run, claws scraping against the road's ancient paving stones. After several seconds you notice that you don't hear Regulus following you, so you pull up on the reins and turn yourself to face him. He sits exactly where you left him, watching you. “Are you coming, or am I doing this alone?”

Regulus responds after a long pause. “You are going alone. I am not capable of fighting a dragon that size and remaining functional. I will wait here for six hours, if you have not returned at that time I will assume that you have perished and go my own way.”

You frown, but you're not to be deterred. Turning your guar once more to face the village you dig your heels in. As you ride towards the village, you reach out to Chryssa via the brooches. {Chrys, there's been a complication. Your village has been burned down by a dragon, a large dragon. I'm relatively certain your husband is dead, because the entire village is ruined. I'm going to see if I can't communicate-}

We don't know anything about dragons except what they look like. Zahhak might not even be a true dragon for all we know.
>>
Her thoughts force their way into your mind, interrupting you. {Do not approach the dragon, Mikhael. To do so would be foolish. If my village has truly been destroyed than I am content in the knowledge that my husband is dead. I do not wish you to endanger yourself unnecessarily.}

Before you can reply, you feel the brush of Fulvia's vast, alien intelligence. {If you can, retrieve a sample of the dragon's scales. I have refrained from taking a sample from Zahak, as the loss of a scale is typically quite painful, but I feel that with Mortia's and Thaddeus' help the scale could prove quite useful.}

Her response is prompt, coming almost before you finish speaking, and the tone of her thoughts carries with it obvious concern. {That is really unnecessary, I would rather not mourn your death alongside the deaths of what few friends I had in my village. Just return safely.}

Sighing, you tug your reins and turn your guar to face Regulus. Spurring the beast into a walk, you reach out towards Fulvia. {I'll keep an eye out for any loose scales but I won't be trying to tear one off of its leg or anything. By the way, how do you know losing a scale hurts a dragon?}

Fulvia's reply is careful and measured. {When Zahak was very young I attempted to pull free one of his scales which looked to already be loose, but he whined and bit me. I have not tried since, as I do not wish to cause him any undue harm.}

You feel a rising sense of paternal anger. {That is unacceptable, Fulvia. You should have asked me before attempting any sort of experiment on Zahak. He's my son, you can't just go poking and prodding other peoples children. Even if they are adopted.}

Your tone is cold and measured, though Fulvia doesn't seem to pick up on these subtle nuances. Blithely unaware of her misstep, she responds. {I would have asked, but you were meditating to reach Grandmastery in Water Magic. It seemed harmless, and Zahak is fine. I do not see the issue.}

With a sigh, you turn your attention back to the world around you. Pulling up on your reins you bring your guar to a stop next to Regulus' own. {We'll talk about this later, I've more important things to see to.} With that, you sever the connection and address Regulus. “I changed my mind.”

After his characteristic pause, he speaks with that inhuman voice of his. “I am relieved. Will we be leaving?”

SO Vatis Rank Metal Affinity (2/3 Insights)
We need to practice our mental fortitude.
and hit expert.
all 4 on mental then at master level 3 into mental protection to be at master level.
If we do all 4 of expert into mental fortification. I can see us earning a small passive. and build from then when at master.
And for our last one obviously a mental fortitude test
After 3 of mental at master we are a gm in it.
SO doing that + adding a Slow + 10-25 vys into mental fortifications. + our trait. And go into the gate to GM metal.
I feel pretty confident we won't get 2 points into our insanity like last time. and GM too.

I want the epilogue of MIK. TO take Soma days to write.
Where he literately has to end the thread, and post the story some where. and a 20 post story of Mik's life after our adventure because he lived that long, and had options.

To GM in metal mind fortifications sir.
At least to my knowledge that may be the best way to do it.
And the slow + x vys into mind fortification is for a back up.
and i am sure even 10 vys into mind fortifications at gm levels+ slow should be a decent safety net. + our trait.
If we focus on mind fortifications

GMing metal is obviously about fortifying our soul enough to hold a polite conversation with a Child.

>>39632961

It's possible, but we don't know if body fortification involves soul magic like mind fortification does. I wouldn't be surprised if you were right, though, and what you're saying would open up a lot of cool possibilities like having a body in the void, modifying permanency (also soul magic) and most importantly talking to Ricky without shitting our brains out.

For /fit/ I would rather do that via learning more indepth into our combat style. and every time we meditate we use meditation of forms.
More in depth we know our style = better meditation bonus + I am sure it would increase our fitness better along with more bonuses per experience.
So their is that.
>>39632961
>Besides having Adamantine as a trait would pretty awesome.
While that does sound pretty fucking bad ass.
I'd prefer to get a passive towards mental and never have to worry about it.
I am sure we could get some thing similar with more meditations into it.
+ we have defense point.
And armor if that fails.
If we don't dodge it completely.
Or learn bubble and use that
But meh I just want Mik so be able to pierce dragon minds with a thought.
And use that + nature magic to subjugate small animals. and work his way up to dragons.
Magic Mik the dragon whisperer/the mind breaker

It would take months before we rank up in our style.
>>
>>39633177
>Do you even know what Admantine means?
I assume you mean towards skin.
So you're talking about body.
I want to not have to worry about out mind.
Seems like we've plenty of options to defend our body like I pointed out.
I understand what you mean.
But to ME personally I think it would be wiser to focus on our mind. in which we don't really have other options other than using metal magic to fortify it.
While the body we have an obvious alternative.
Armor.
Armor not enough? All that means is we need better armor.
Better armor not enough? Enchant that better armor to be even "betterer" lol

You reach into your cloak, extracting one of your folded up tents and sitting it across your lap. “Do you recall where that broken guard tower we passed is? It's to the east, in a clearing.”

Regulus stares at you in silence before ultimately nodding. “I recall, I have a perfect memory. Why are you asking?”

You hold out the tent. “Take this back to the guard tower and set it up hidden in the tower itself. If you're able, create some sort of screen to drape over the top of the tower so anything flying above wouldn't be able to see inside. Don't build a fire, but wait for me inside the tower. I'm going to go searching for any survivors who might have escaped the initial attack.”

Regulus slowly processes your directions, ultimately taking the tent and tucking it under one arm. “Very well, I will set up a campsite in the remnants of the guard tower. I will wait there until tomorrow evening. Do not do anything to draw undue attention to yourself.” Regulus spurs his guar into motion, twisting it around your own and riding it east, towards the mountain pass and the guard tower.

You spur your guar into the tall grass which surrounds Khmedi. It seems the most logical place to hide if you're fleeing from a dragon. Extending your senses into the grass, you become aware of four vaguely anthropomorphic shapes running through the grass. You can only tell where they are by the disturbances they cause, but it's fairly clear. They're not exactly being careful to avoid detection.

(1/2)
>>
Following them are six decidedly bestial shapes. You can tell they walk on two legs, but they seem to have very strange limbs, long tails, and long necks. They vaguely remind you of guar, they're about the same size, but they're too different to be guar. They seem to be pursuing the other shapes, which you assume to be survivors.

It wouldn't be "immoral".

Think about it like this, you snagged your waifu with a dirty cheap trick, years down the line she runs off with some dark skinned magic slinging freakazoid, and then some months pass while you try to legally finagle your way out of the marriage but you can't because they (by law) need to see your wife's corpse.
Then a couple weeks after you stop trying a dragon comes and burns your home to the ground and everyone you ever knew or even slightly cared for, including that guy you didn't like very much but was kinda a bro to drink with and hunt with on occasion, so life pretty much sucks shit because you had to run away from your own home to hide from the devastation.

Then out of fucking nowhere that tall darky sandelf pops up on a guar armed and armored charging your lone plainsspread camp down proclaiming some insane quip regarding voidy fornication as he lances you through with a mindsoul reaping spear, and his freaky robot punches you in the balls before you die too, and that also sucks, the end.

It's all about perspective.

You don't have time to stop, but it would seem unwise to charge into this unarmored. Reaching into your cloak you extract the boots crafted from the carapace of a Palaka Worm, struggling for a moment to pull on your boot even as your guar jolts you around on its back. Fortunately Ricky slides one of his transparent, ethereal tentacles out of the cloak and helps you. He pulls on your boots, clasp your greaves and cuisses around your shins and thighs respectively, and he cinches your cuirass in place.

With Ricky's help you're suited up in record time. Sliding on your helmet, you seal it shut with a soft click. Almost immediately pain lances up and down your spine, every muscle in your body spasming momentarily as that wretched spike drives its way into your neck. You very nearly tumble from your saddle. It had been so long you'd forgotten how much this hurts. Fortunately it's only a few brief seconds before vys floods into you, inundating your body with power. The pain is forgotten, but unlike in the past when you wore the armor there is no sense of invisibility. You don't feel compelled to challenge the world. There is just a sense of calm confidence, that whatever challenges you might face you'll ultimately overcome them.

Adjusting yourself in the saddle so that you're once more properly seated, you steer the guar with your thighs while reaching into your cloak to retrieve your shield and your new trident. Funny, you've always been sort of a poor rider. You never figured out how to steer with just your knees, heels, and thighs. Yet here you are, managing it just fine.

>>39636578

I was gonna vote to take their bodies with us altogether if they turned out to be actually draconic in nature. I imagine Fulvia and maybe Mortia would have much fun with it.

You channel vys into the helmet of your armor and suddenly the world shifts. The grass, one a rich green, now appears black to your sight. Veins of blue creep through it, carrying with them some sort of multi-hued substance you don't recognize. The ebbs and flows of vys in your surroundings appear as ghostly filaments tracing their way through the air. Spirits of all shapes and sizes dance through the grass, going about their business without sparing you even a glance.

What draws your attention more than anything else is the distant form of the dragon. Its scales have vanished, instead its flesh is red-hot steel, its blood is magma, and fire licks across its every surface. It seems like the physical manifestation of Surya's wrath. The living embodiment of fire.

You're distracted from the spectacle by a panicked shriek, it carries faintly across the plains. You probably wouldn't have heard it, had you not been wearing the armor. Driving your heals into your guar you spur it once more into a full run, your trident and shield held at the ready. You can see the creatures through what the Varistha had called “The Sight” long before you'd actually be able to see them. They appear as thin, almost delicate creatures. They charge through the underbrush with their heads held low, their eyes burning with hate, and their wings folded tight against their bodies. They remind you of massive predatory birds. Through the lens of the Sight, it seems as if large stretches of their skin are missing, fire spilling from the wounds.
(2/3)
>>
One of the creatures, the largest, has managed to capture one of the survivors. It has her pinned beneath its foot, claws opening gashes across her back. The fear seems to pour off of her in waves, coloring the air around her in swirling shades of yellow and blue even as the creature opens its maw to deliver what you presume to be the killing blow.

I'll say the raptors are spread out over about... fifty square feet of space. Some chasing the villagers still fleeing, some circling the villager they caught.
So that's five vys, +1 from ranged, +1 from paralysis.

So a total of 7 vys to cast the spell. That will put your vys pool at 45/52.

You'll probably nail 2/4 of the villagers, the one currently trapped and one of the ones fleeing, as well as all the raptors chasing them.

All dragon-like creatures have some resistance to magic, so that will bump up the DC. Since they're corrupted, I'll say their resistance is lower than average. I'll say the base DC is 22.

I'll say since you've managed to surprise them, you'll get a -2 to the DC. You don't really have any bonuses which would apply to this.

With that in mind.

Pointing your spear towards the raptor about to take a chunk out of the villager's neck, you channel your vys. You keep channeling vys until your spear glows almost violently, pumping vast magical power into the enchanted weapon. You get the sense that the vys starts to take on a life of its own as the enchantments act upon it, but before you cause some sort of horrible chain reaction you release the spell. A glob of roiling green and blue sails into the air, bursting as it neared the raptor.

Magic washes across the ground, visibly rolling through the densely packed grass. The raptor nearest the detonation is frozen almost immediately, its jaws only inches from the woman's neck. The three raptors which had been circling the presumed pack leader as he prepared to kill his prey are similarly frozen still, though some of them manage to make a few halting steps towards you.

Unfortunately the two raptors which had kept chasing the villagers are less effected by the spell. Quite unlike one of the villagers they were chasing. A human male in his middle age is frozen solid, just as the two beast pounce upon him. They tear into his flesh with a sort of violent abandon, giving themselves over to blood lust. You can't help but wince, but you suppose civilian casualties are to be expected. At least you saved the other human.

As they finish tearing apart the poor villager, the two raptors which remain unparalleled turn their attention towards you. You can definitely tell that their movements are slowed, their joints slowly locking in place, but the spell won't reach its full effect for quite some time yet.

You're distracted from the flanking raptor when the charging raptor skids to a halt and opens its jaws wide, spewing a massive jet of flame from its gaping maw.

You channel magic, seizing hold of the fire spewing from the raptor's mouth and twisting it to your own purposes. It cuts across the grass at a sharp angle, washing over the raptor attempting to flank you. The raptor breathing fire doesn't seem to realize that anything is amiss, but its ally seems quite peeved. It comes stumbling out of the flames confused, a roar ripping from its throat.
>Vys Pool: (29/52)

Its ally clamps its jaws shut, the jet of flame stopping abruptly. The entire area has been scorched black, flames slowly creeping across the grass and spreading through the fields. The grass is alive and healthy, so hopefully the inferno won't spread too far. Even if it does, it's not exactly your concern.

Because it has a reason to, unlike the Gods who apparently stopped giving a shit about mortals a while ago.

Also because vys has elemental affinity, as seen with dragons, whose souls burn so hot we literally saw a spirit warming itself from Zahak's soul as if it was a campfire.

Also because the last time the Entity came around, he destroyed an entire fucking empire by himself, so maybe being careful about this isn't that bad an idea.

Or maybe you're right and it doesn't affect us, or it's a ratio thing so we're safe as long as it remains our lowest affinity, or maybe it actually helps us combat the Entity. We don't know. That's why we're pondering the possibilities.

If they are intelligent as evidenced by their communication and planning, then it stands to reason that they can be bluffed or intimidated.

Slowly dismount the guar and walk toward one of the raptors.

Can we tele-link to our robot ally to flank the one that is trying to flank us, or somehow communicate? We have small unit tactics, we can use hand signals and we are versed in small unit Rhynian tactics, we should know something like that.

I am thinking learning more about the strings.
more about how the world works, studio gravity/world in general. And related enchants should be easier to believe since we understand the "strings" more in depth.

Most of this is just baseless assumptions.

These things are probably at least semi-sentient and loyal to the dragons. Doubt taming them is a possibility.

But who knows we may be able to learn Draconic from them.

>>

>>
>>39638751
I am with you anon.
But "capture" them all. No thanks.
At best we only need one.
we can feed keep on body in the cloak to do tests before they start experimenting on. or if we lose our live one. And feed the rest to Ricky and hope he doesn't eat the one in our cloak.
>>
>>39638751

Kill 3 and keep the corpses, try to purify the last one. Might let us know stuff in exchange, since we'd be showing it kindness their masters didn't. Or we can force info out of it.

Taming or bringing a live one to a city is stupid though, let's not do that.
>>
>>39638845

>>
>>39638873
>Taming or bringing a live one to a city is stupid though, let's not do that.
WHY NOT?
Its under paralysis.
We could break it's mind with metal magic. and control it via nature magic.
Anon, you give good ideas.
>>
>>39638751
Kill them all, or kill most and keep one for experimenting. No taming, because that would either not work at all (vicious beasts) or would take lots of time and we don't even have time for the useful things we want to do.
>>
>>39638876
>It was defeated and sealed.
Confirmed by VarVar. He was there when it happened.
>Us putting on that mask has obviously woke it up and has started to give it more power.
It was sealed in the past. Powerless, now that we have put the mask on it can influence us ans possibly take over our body. Said as much itself. Thus it going from Powerless to having that power makes that fact.

One of them lunges for you, and you spur your guar into motion. It jerks forward and the raptor sails past harmlessly, its claws scratching at air. You channel vys, drawing moisture from the air and letting it wrap around your arms. You point one of your arms at the raptor which leaped at you and the other at the raptor tensing itself to pounce. Jets of water shoot out, but rather than strike the beast the water coils around their joints.

They try to shake the water free, but it freezes in an instant. The frost slowly creeps across their limbs, encasing them in ice. They try to melt it away by breathing fire on themselves, but you manage to freeze the water just as fast as they can melt it. Soon their jaws are frozen shut, and they're well and truly frozen solid. It's only a matter of time before the paralysis spell kicks in fully and they're left entirely paralyzed.

Dismounting your guar, you approach the nearest raptor. It's a hideously ugly beast. Ragged fur covers most of its body, and its flesh looks diseased. Its teeth are massive things, and some sort of hooked claws extend from the top and bottom of its jaws. It gives it the appearance of having a massive nose. It has two glowing orange eyes, beady little things, and some sort of structure you can't determine the purpose of just behind its eyes. It looks like a pustule of some sort.

Why..when we have a sword that we have plenty of vys in.
We could heal any damage, and keep paralyzing it. force it to stay hydratedwater gm guys
seems like a decent way to start expending the swords vys in a usefull way.
>>
>>39638928
We don't have to do it ourselves Mortia and Karim both are Nature GMs I believe and most suited to try
>>
Spines extend from its back, and its tail is long and whip like. At the end of its tail is some sort of scythe-like claw, presumably another weapon in the creature's aresenal. It seems to walk primarily on two legs, but it has feet at the 'elbow' of its wings. True feet, not like Zahak's claws. It almost reminds you of a mutated version of Zahak, come to think of it. How odd.

It eats people. It can telepathically talk to others of its kind. It breathes fire. It may have corrupt vys and possibly know other magic.

You want to try and tame it, contain it is a denseley populated area, breed it, and sell it to nobles.

How do you not see why that could go wrong? This is Jurassic Park cubed.
