You are Kusajishi Riku, Lieutenant of the Court Guard's Second Division and sort-of guardian of two young street rats.

Gin and Rangiku are still asleep when you wake up, well before sunrise. It's become your usual routine to already be swinging your sword by dawn, and you're not about to change that just because you've got some guests. So you carefully and quietly dress, before leaping out the sliding patio door and down into the courtyard garden your quarters face.

Amidst the scent of trailing wisteria blossoms, you begin.

Kenjutsu comes first. Your blade feels as light as it always does in your hands as you rotate through the five basic stances, striking from each a few hundred times before repeating the process with the next position. Then you move on to the more advanced sets from the Tennen Rishin-ryu and Jigen-ryu, before ending with the sets of your own device, which incorporate the sheath.

For the hour or so after that you're joined by Yoruichi, who only seems half-awake as you work through paired sets for hakuda training. Suì Fēng watches the whole time from the roof as you exchange one sequence of blows after the next. Impressively enough, she seems to be able to follow your movements now.

By the time the sun is fully up Yoruichi has taken her shadow with her to clean up and scrounge some food, leaving you to sit quietly on a rock with Tenkotsuki: not really conversing as much as you're both simply enjoying the morning air.

It's then that you notice two presences, watching you from the balcony of your room.

“You can come out here, you know,” you tell the kids. “I'm just relaxing now.”

Gin drops down from the balcony first, falling lightly onto his feet. Rangiku's arrival is less graceful, ending with a crash as she falls on her butt, but she's quick to dust herself off. You note that the silver-haired boy isn't coming any closer, but that Rangiku comes up to you seemingly without any fear or suspicion.

“Do you do this every day?” she asks, clearly meaning your morning routine. The whole notion of being well-fed and secure enough to burn energy training before you even eat breakfast must be foreign to her.

You tuck Tenkotsuki into your sash before stooping to cup some water from a small bucket, splashing your face a little for an end-of-session cooldown. “Yeah. Been that way for ten years.”

“And d'ya always do it so early?” Gin asks. You must've woken him by accident when you left.

“Mhm. But it's mostly muscle memory at this point. I barely have to be awake.” Gin quietly ponders the implications there: that for you, fighting has become literally so second nature as to require no real thought.

“Will we have to do that too?” Rangiku asks nervously.

You laugh as you lead them towards the smell of breakfast being served to the rest of your Division. “Nope. If I let you swing your sword wrong over four million times you'd never recover from it.”

>After breakfast, I'm going to drop you off with a friend of mine who can teach you a bit.

As much as you'd love to go ruffle Byakuya's feathers, you can't really think of a reasonable excuse for you being in the Kuchiki manor this morning... another time, perhaps. More immediate in your mind is the knowledge that Yoruichi has been frustrated with Suì Fēng's stalled progress in kenjutsu. She clings to the Jigen-ryu taught to her by her mistress like a daughter wrapped around her mother's leg, and it's caused her to cease her own growth and development. You can tell that Yoruichi's probably going to instruct her student to spar with you, hoping that you'll drive the point home for her.

“Let's grab some breakfast,” you tell Gin and Rangiku. “After that I'll probably have to teach Yoruichi's bodyguard a lesson.”

Gin eyes you warily. “A lesson, y'say?”

“Not like a beating... well, it'll probably look like a beating,” you amend yourself. “But it's a lesson she has to learn. She has goals of her own that she can't achieve otherwise.”

“I don't get it,” Rangiku frowns.

“You'll see when it's time.”

Breakfast is a fairly simple affair in the Japanese style today, with rice and miso with a variety of add-ins. You favor the aburaage, while Gin mixes in green onions and Rangiku takes hers plain, but also has a slice of fish. As usual you're treated to seconds, which settles your rumbling stomach after a day's worth of training compressed into a few hours. After your plates and bowls are cleared, and Rangiku forces Gin to thank the cook with her, you make your way to the training hall.

Since it's an absolutely gorgeous day outside, with a fresh breeze and warm sunlight, nobody's in here but a black cat. Your Captain, unbeknownst to anyone else in the room, peers down at you from the rafters as you enter.

“Fancy,” Gin mutters, inspecting the protective armor and training swords the higher-ranking swordsmen in the Stealth Corps use to instruct recruits... for the safety of the recruits, of course. Rangiku, meanwhile, has donned a helmet and is swinging a shinai around comically. It's still a bit too long for her. You see you've got a lot of work ahead of you.

You sigh, catching her bamboo sword between your fingers and effortlessly flipping it out of her hands. “I'll teach you in a bit,” you promise her, snatching the hilt of the shinai from out of the air as it spins, “but I need this right now, so try and behave? Okay?”

Rangiku pouts as you seat her and Gin against the wall, before Suì Fēng arrives.

“Lady Yoruichi insisted I spar with you this morning, Commander Kusajishi,” she greets you with a stiff bow. “Please take care of me.”

You wave off her bow. “No need to be so formal. Grab a shinai and we'll get started.”

Teach those kids how to hold a sword with TWO hands!
>>
>>39633610
To your sparring partner's surprise, you simply smirk and beckon her with one finger. “No sense wasting time, hit me with your best.”

Perfect. All that you needed to set Suì Fēng off was that little taunt, and she immediately takes up a stance without arguing. Sword held vertically, high over the right shoulder: classic Jigen-ryu, Tonbo-no-mae. The “Dragonfly” stance of that school, which Yoruichi favors, eschews all thought of a second strike in favor of generating as much power as possible with the first blow.

How predictable.

As you take up an umbrella stance, your side turned and your blade held high with the point trained carefully on your assailant, she gives a loud shout of “EI!” and charges you. Her speed is good, and the power behind this blow is decent as well... but it's nowhere close to Yoruichi.

“Gotcha!” you shout back, sliding your right hand forward along the back of your own shinai and angling it so that the powerful overhand blow slides off to your right side. With the same pressure that resisted Suì Fēng's attack you push forward above her outstretched arms and slam your blade across her chest.

Had it been a Zanpakuto she would have been cut in two right below the collarbone, but even with a training sword Suì Fēng is thrown backwards by the force of the blow, and lies momentarily stunned on the floor. You can feel Gin and Rangiku's eyes on you, and sense that they don't understand the point of the exercise: your opponent is clearly outclassed.

“How!?” Suì Fēng gasps. “Do you know Jigen-ryu as well?”

“Of course I know Jigen-ryu,” you reply, resting your shinai on your shoulder as the girl struggles to her feet. “Who d'ya think taught me how to fight?”

She nods breathlessly. “Of course... you studied under Lady Yoruichi as well...”
(1/2)
>>
>>39634126
“Jigen-ryu's a favorite of Shinigami, due to the Tonbo-no-Kamae's raw power being good against large Hollows,” you explain for Gin and Rangiku's benefit “Captain Shihōin Yoruichi is a master of the style, and she gets away with using it against me because her speed and control are phenomenal, which lets her recover if she has to. Damn near anyone else misses the crucial first strike, and loses.”

“Took me five years to figure out how to stop Yoruichi from nearly killin' me with that technique, but it's real simple in theory. Such a basic attack has no chance of hitting me unless my opponent is at least a Captain.”

The last bit was for your partner's benefit, but you're not fully sure how well she understood the point. You're trying to SHOW her that she's limiting herself without having to TELL her: the message may stick better if she realizes it herself.

>”Wanna see how I use Jigen-ryu?” That should prove your point in dramatic fashion.
>Try again, but use something different. Maybe she'll realize it on her own.

Suì Fēng's eyes narrow as she straightens her short crop of black hair. “Very well. We shall see how familiar you are with this technique...”

This time she holds her blade in the middle position, keeping it closer to your centerline as she advances...

Most Kidou incantations are pretty metal. Though with Tenkotsuki's abilities, that isn't really gonna happen much unless we're trying to reinforce an already cast spell by re-enchanting it.

Or take it to Kidou Corps level where there's a follow-up version for certain spells.

No, the core style of the Shinsengumi was Tennen Rishin-ryu, and she's using Sosuishi-ryu.

They both existed simultaneously, and someone with knew more about this field could expand on their similarities and differences. If I remember correctly Sosuishi was originally from Southern Japan, while Tennen Rishin originated in more central Japan nearer to Tokyo.
>>
>>39634765
I hope we do some really unfair shit with our combos, like making the spell invisible on the fly or having two complementary spells go off simultaneously.

>>39634819
Didn't Yoruichi mention teaching us a technique that would let us use those cord binding tricks with Reiatsu or something?
>>
>>39634538
Her attack is fairly direct, with no real tricks to it. You drop your blade into a low, reactive position and distance parry, carefully moving your feet only enough to get you out of her range by the smallest possible margin. To your amusement it seems Little Bee was counting on that. Clever, but the stunning strike she aims at your temple was too transparent... it's exactly what Yoruichi might do, and nowhere near as well executed.

“Better,” you commend her as you smack her wrist with a closed right fist to stop the blow dead, “but not good enough.”

Your counterattack is a simple upward swipe with your sword in your left hand that Suì Fēng manages to backpedal away from with a shunpo... her mistake. The hirazuki, or “flat thrust” championed by Hijikata Toshizō of the Shinsengumi isn't something that can be avoided that easily.

Stepping after her with your left foot you let a hirenkyaku close the distance, and your powerful thrust collides with the hilt of her shinai. Both weapons are obliterated from the force of the strike, but not before you slam Suì Fēng halfway through the nearest wall. She lays at the base of the wall for a moment, thoroughly winded but otherwise unharmed, trying to figure out exactly what just happened.

“Isn't that enough?” Rangiku asks nervously, rising to her feet. Gin is on one knee, seemingly ready to get to his feet if need be.

You nod as you walk over to them, tossing the hilt of your destroyed shinai aside. You note that your opponent still hasn't gotten up yet. “Yes. Right now she realizes if we were using Zanpakuto, or probably even bokken, she'd be unconscious or dead. That's the point to this whole exercise... to show her how far behind she's fallen.”

>Go over to Suì Fēng, try to explain to her what happened just now. Don't let it fester.

Correct. Sōsuishi-ryu in particular makes sense for Yoruichi to know/teach, as it's a "comprehensive" school that uses a lot of empty-hand strikes to unbalance or distract while the sword finishes or parries. It also tends to be uncomplicated, which is a plus.

I'm not ALL that familiar with its specific techniques.

We couldn't do that combo because our bankai negates kido, And shunko mixes kido and hakuda

IF it works during Bankai. We haven't tested that yet. If it does work that means there's a short period Kido like Reiatsu can be expelled before being snuffed out by our bankai (since we send it out then draw it back in in a cycle to create Shunko). That would mean a point blank Kido type attack could still function. Either way the are benefits and drawbacks.
>>
>>39635084
It negates external expression of spiritual pressure.

We should probably test that, though. I don't think it's gonna work because Shunko involves spiritual power being expelled from the shoulders, AFAIK.

You should ask her first, all things considered.
>>
>>39635207
She meant where people can observe. We can take a moment to actually use it and understand how it fully works without her getting upset. If we don't ever summon it for practice we won't be able to rely on it when we need it.

The trick is practicing it when Yoruichi isn't around and finding a way to dodge showing it off the the Old man and whoever else wants us to to test for captain since it seems like there's been some interest in that amongst the higher ups.
>>
We should tell her that she has the talent to make captain. Costing like this is a waste and will reflect poorly on yourichi
>>
>>39635267
Sure I agree. I like us being in harmony with her. It's a good feeling.
>>
WOO! I finally managed to catch this live!
>>
>>39634914
Although you HAD wanted to let her realize this herself, you also don't want to let her brood on it for too long. She seems predisposed to hating you, so you may as well not give her a good reason so soon. So you return to her, and offer your hand. She doesn't take it.

In her feline form, Yoruichi pads quietly across the rafters to get close enough to listen in.

“Look,” you sigh, looking down at Suì Fēng as she sits on the floor. “I know you don't wanna hear a lecture, least of all from me. But this is why Yoruichi had you fight me: to show you that simply copying her techniques and throwing them at me isn't gonna work.”

“You wanna protect Yoruichi, right?”

There's a moment where she sits in silence before replying. “I do.”

“More than anything?”

“Yes.”

You nod to yourself. “Well, you're not gonna do it by just using her moves, but less effectively. You'll need to get at least to the level where Kisuke and I are at to do it. To do that you need to step out of Yoruichi's shadow already. Think for yourself, learn your own strengths and how to build on them, and grow strong in your own right."

“You can do that, right?”

Finally, Suì Fēng takes hold of your hand and lets you help her to her feet.

“Definitely,” she replies, and you can see a new determination in her eyes. When she leaves the room after bowing to you again, she does so still holding her head high. That's good.

“Well kids,” you announce with a clap of your hands. “You're up.”

Rangiku's eyes widen at the thought as Yoruichi drops to the tatami mats and trots silently at your side.

“Well, Rangiku,” Gin offers with a grim grin, “I was glad to've metcha. Just wanted you t'know.”

“Aw, I won't be that bad,” you laugh. “But still, best to keep both eyes open for this, Gin.”

You grab hold of a replacement shinai, and toss two “wakizashi” length practice swords to your new students before explaining the stances to them. “Chūdan-no-kamae, middle stance. Tip at eye leve, relaxed shoulders, blade leaning forward. Most balanced of the three common stances. Gedan-no-kamae, low stance, good for defending or luring an attack to the upper body. Tip forward and below your hands, edge down.”

“Hassō-no-kamae, more aggressive than the first two stances, but poor for defense. Blade in front of you and held higher than middle stance, tip angled slightly back. Jōdan-no-kamae, the highest stance and most aggressive. Higher than Hassō-no-kamae. Wakigamae, blade held at your hip and angled behind you, to hide the length of your sword. Those are the five basic stances of kenjutsu.”

At each new stance you show Gin and Rangiku how to position themselves, physically correcting the posture of their small, still somewhat malnourished bodies where necessary. Just like Yoruichi did for you.

Gin seems to take to it more easily, and eventually you feel ready to show them the basic strikes.

“Three strikes on each side,” you explain. “Down diagonally, horizontal, and upward diagonally. Three midline: upward and downward, and the thrust. Do not use the thrust until I tell you it's okay.”

“Why's that?” Rangiku asks you.

To illustrate your point, you thrust at the wall with your shinai and leave a deep dent in it, even with such a halfhearted strike.

“That's why. Your practice swords don't do as well to absorb the power of a thrust, so they're dangerous to use when sparring.”

“Ya sure seem ta care more 'bout our safety than yer subordinate back then,” Gin observes.

You ruffle his hair a little, and when you remove your hand he tries vainly to push it back into some semblance of order. “I held back, just a little,” you reassure him. “But to hold back too much... it'd be insulting, you know.”

“Now, swing those shinai,” you order.

“For how long?” Rangiku replies.

“Till I tell you to stop, of course.”

As Gin and Rangiku grumble and begin to swing their blades tentatively, you find yourself having to interrupt them less and less often. By an hour before noon or so, you're simply sitting to one side watching, giving Yoruichi's ears a scratch as she sits next to you. Is it weird that you're scratching your Captain's ears? Probably, but who cares?

Not like I mind Kaoru, the meeting just sounded like the only time-constrained option while the others could be done at any time. Oh well.

It may actually be time to show them something new and different. You think that Kaoru has the afternoon off, so she should be able to help instruct these two in the very basics of kidō. You may have been able to pick stuff up just by copying what you saw others do, but you somehow doubt you'd make all that effective a teacher when it comes right down to it.

“Head back and grab some food,” you tell Gin, handing him your Lieutenant's badge so the cook on duty knows that he and Rangiku are there with your permission. “You did great this morning, both of you.”

Your simple words of praise seem to catch Gin off guard, likely because he's never been told something like that before, and puts a little bounce in Rangiku's step as she races off for lunch. As you're left to pick up their abandoned equipment, you kneel across from Yoruichi.

“They've got potential,” she admits in her oddly masculine cat voice. “And thanks for helping with Suì Fēng... as much as that girl adores me, she never really listens to me. Couldn't even get her to drop the honorifics.”

“I noticed,” you reply. “Not a problem. I'll be taking those two to learn a bit from Kaoru after lunch. That okay?”

Yoruichi hops up onto a windowsill, apparently ready to go off on her own business. “I suppose that means I'll have to go to this “Women's Association” thing. What a bother...”

“Hey, you can't pawn all your work off onto Kisuke all day long.”

“Doesn't mean I can't try.”

After eating a rather spartan meal of kitsune soba, you leave the Second Division barracks to head over to the Kidō Corps' HQ. The place is fairly secluded, near the base of the execution grounds hill. You gather that's because the tools used to execute prisoners there require a specific ritual to unseal and use properly, which makes having the most adept Kidō users all in that one place convenient.

It doesn't take you long to single out Kaoru's reiatsu, and you find her sitting by an open window overlooking a small garden.

"Hey, third-seat Shiba!" you call to her. "Brought ya some students!"

Kaoru shuts the book she's been reading to survey Gin and Rangiku, and she quickly smiles as she pushes her glasses back up onto her nose.

"Oh? So who's the..."

"My Captain beat you to it," you interrupt with a grin. "By about a hundred years."

"She's too fast at that too, I guess," Shiba sighs, hopping down from her perch to greet you. "You've been well, I take it?"

"Very. Made Bankai not too long ago."

Your friend's eyes widen in surprise. "Bankai, huh... I knew you were bullshit strong, but I had no idea you'd gotten that far already. I need to step up my own training."

"Think you can spare time for these two?" you ask. "They've got pretty good instincts, and nice reiatsu for untrained kids."

"What did you have in mind?"

“Let's start with the basics,” you suggest. When they practice we can talk about more technical stuff.”

Kaoru nods, then immediately launches off into a lecture about reiatsu, how to sense it, how its generated, and how to shape it. In a dramatic change from the kenjutsu training earlier today, it's Rangiku who seems to hang on every word, and who figures out the trick to sensing her own reiatsu first. Gin on the other hand looks a little lost for a while, before he quietly nods and insists he's figured it out.

“Good, now let's try this,” you suggest. “Kaoru, have our students use Hadō 1 on me.”

She nods. “Sure. That's probably safe.”

Rangiku is the first to step up. Kaoru goes over the incantation for her, and tells her how to focus her spiritual energy properly. Sure enough, the blonde girl manages to get it right on just her second attempt. It feels like someone's tapping your forehead due to its low power, but it's technically solid.

“Hey, I did it!” she cheers, jumping in place. “Did you see that, Gin!?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Gin mutters, trying to sound excited.

“That was a really good start!” you tell Rangiku, trying to keep her excited. “Keep it up!”

When Gin's turn comes up, he manages to knock himself onto the ground. Rangiku laughs a bit before helping him to his feet. It takes several more attempts to get it right, but eventually he manages to hit you with a Sho. It's noticeably stronger than Rangiku's when he manages it, but not by too huge a degree.

“Now then, let's see about something a bit tougher: Byakurai.” Kaoru repeats the process of teaching your two young pupils how to chant, aim, and draw out their spiritual energy, before letting them try.

Rangiku hits her target with a weak blast of lightning, cheering once again. Gin manages to singe his eyebrows and blow his hair back as his spell goes off in his hands.

If we got Yoruichi tier we actually might stand a chance against him if we shut down all his Kido and Flames. He's still Beast mode with a sword and beast mode with his fists but we'd have a better chance than all but maybe 3-4 of the current captains I think.

Then again revealing it to him may be fine since he already had every possible contingency he'll feel he needs for it. The trouble is if he feels like it's too dangerous of an ability to have around.

I dunno that we'd have to, honestly. Kenny doesnt need a bankai. I figure, since our bankai is basically just a crazy kubo switcharoo for special occasions, most of our power is already with us at all times, as the full state of our shikai, and we should probably be able to match most captains with just that. When were at captain level, that is

“Everyone has their strengths,” you remind Gin as you tussle his hair playfully, which he's forced to stand there and take this time. “Yours is also your problem: you've got more reiatsu than you can actually control, meaning your spells backfire sometimes.”

“So how do I fixit?” he asks quietly, his eyes fixed on the target downrange.

Kaoru sits next to him, also looking at his target with him. “Maybe try working with Sho some more? Try maintaining the pressure, see if that helps you get a feel for your own power.”

Gin nods thoughtfully. “I'll givvit a go, yeah.”

“No substitute for experience,” you add.

As the two kids continue practicing, you sit next to Kaoru, who hands you a small book. “You're fond of Bakudō 79, right? Kuyō Shibari?

“Yeah,” you admit. “It's still the highest level spell like it I can use. Why?”

“I was thinking about something yesterday,” she explains. “My spiritual power's a bit too low to pull it off though.”

Looking at her handwritten notes, you see a passage with a short incantation: “My left hand stokes the nine black flames. Blood of steel, voice of thunder, call down ruin and attain Nirvana.”

“So what do you think, Tenkotsuki?” you mutter, drawing a strange look from Kaoru that you summarily ignore.

Inside your head, you hear a faint voice. “Nine black flames must reference the nine singularities of Kuyō Shibari, but you got that much on your own I would imagine.”

“Singularities?” you ask quizzically.

“A topic for another time, my dear Riku. The next verse is reminiscent of a cannon or explosion, referencing steel and thunder as parts of the human body. The last part? Very likely refers to using the energy from the existing spell to incinerate its target.”

“Thank you, Tenkotsuki,” you bow to nobody in particular. “Should I try it?”

“I see no reason why not. Simply exercise caution.”

“Okay,” you tell Kaoru.

She smiles, and turns to shout over her shoulder. “Hey, Mister Tessai! She's gonna try it out!”

After a few seconds, the man you recognize as Kaoru's commanding officer and Yoruichi's childhood friend arrives, quietly looking you over before nodding in approval. “Very well. Have the children step back.”

You nudge Gin and Rangiku back towards Kaoru and Tessai. “Go watch from over there” you tell them. “This should be pretty spectacular, whether it works or fails.”

The black orbs flicker in a ring around your distant target, with one planted firmly in the center of where your foe's chest would be. You spare a glance at the book once more to double-check the name of the spell... “Black Cremation”.

“My left hand stokes the nine black flames. Blood of steel, voice of thunder, call down ruin and attain Nirvana,” you recite, watching the flames grow more violent as a ball of flickering black flame surrounds your outstretched left hand.

That's not right. That's not right at all. The name of this spell is...

“Kuyō Shibari: Yūgure Kasō!”

With a great roar the nine orbs of black flame explode into a wildly dancing pillar of annihilation, which widens to consume the majority of the Kidō Corps' training grounds and extends high into the heavens. Great gusts of wind whip around the pillar in a mad frenzy as it even begins to rip doors off the nearby barracks and strip leaves off nearby trees, dragging the light debris up into the raging inferno of darkness.

At the same time the orb of energy at your left hand goes wild as well, covering your limb up to the shoulder. It's everything you can do to keep from screaming, but Kaoru does that for you. You can barely hear Tessai shouting at her to stay back as the flames try and fail to consume your arm, only prevented from doing so by your Blut Vene... had you been even a fraction of a second later, you'd have lost FAR more than the top layer of your skin or so, possibly right down to the bone.

Finally the vortex of black flames dissipates, and you wince in pain as you turn to face the stunned onlookers.

“That... was easily in the range of the middle 90's,” Tessai murmurs nervously. “Had I attempted it myself, as I was about to... I may have destroyed this whole area and everyone in it by mistake... how terrible..."

“You're...” Kaoru stammers. “You're hurt so bad! How are you not screaming?”

“It's just a flesh wound,” you mutter. “I can still move it... though I'd really rather not.”

“That's why I told you to be careful,” Tenkotsuki chides you. “My sweet, foolish Riku. Had you used an unincanted spell, the burns would likely have been no worse than a sunburn.”

You walk over to Gin and Rangiku, who are still staring at you in shock. Crouching down, you give them a pained smile. “You two okay?”

“Shouldn' I be askin' you that?” Gin replies, still wide-eyed. Or rather wide-er eyed, meaning it's a rare chance where you can see his irises.

You offer a small, but confident laugh. “Wouldn't be training if there wasn't SOME risk. Bankai training can kill you too, and that didn't stop me.”

Kaoru crouches next to you, brushing the hair out of her face before beginning to heal your injury. “It's the least I can do,” she explains. “I asked you to do it, after all... but still, I wonder. Why did you change the name?”

Why indeed... a sudden instinct? No, there was more to it than that at the time. It's just...

“It didn't sound like it fit the incantation,” you explain. “Sorry. I couldn't tell you anything more than that.”

Your friend nods thoughtfully. “I guess that makes more sense than pinning it on dumb luck... though there was still plenty of dumb involved.”

“Hey,” you chide. “Bedside manners.”

Gin's eyes ease back into their usual, narrow gaze as he grins almost sheepishly. “Guess that'd be why yer Captain's so keen on ya. Nothin' seems ta keep ya down long, does it?”

“Gin!” Rangiku hisses. “What're you saying all of a sudden?”

“She broughtcha food las' night, and the way she jokes witcha... that ain't the same way she talks to jus' anyone. Gives me a gut feelin', ya see.”

Going to say this now though, constant gung-ho will likely lead to problems like this eventually, if for no other reason than the law of large numbers. Roll enough times and you're gonna fail. Take too many risks, and you'll get burned.

“What. Like with you and Rangiku?” you counter, ruffling his hair yet again with your good arm. He absolutely clams up as Rangiku giggles at him.

“She got you there, Gin,” she teases.

You withdraw your hand, and briefly test your now-healed fingers as Kaoru works her way up your brutalized arm. She's listening, though. Even Tessai seems to be eavesdropping.

“Unlike with you two,” you explain, “there are rules regarding what Captains can and can't do. It's why Captain Kyōraku never does anything more than tease his Lieutenant, and write crappy romance novels about her. If Yoruichi has something more to say to me, she'll say it when I make Captain. Until then, business continues as usual, and that's all there is to it."

“And if you speak one word of this to anyone else, kiddo,” you threaten, “the next noogie's gonna be fatal. Got it?”

After your arm is healed fully, you say goodbye to Kaoru for now and head back to barracks: you and the kids are exhausted from your experiences today. As you pass, numerous Shinigami are talking amongst themselves about that terrifying pyre of back flames, and already the story is being exaggerated. But as the sun sets on your first day with Gin and Rangiku, you feel...

... like you have a family again, with all the wonderful little complexities that comes with that. You're proud of what Rangiku and Gin have accomplished already, and you want to see them grow from here. If things continued this way for another few hundred years... yeah. That'd be nice.

Again, time passes as if in the blink of an eye.

Gin is the first to head off to the academy, with your full support getting him into the advanced class. Not that it matters, really, as he's seated in the Fifth Division by the next year. You reassure him that Captain Hirako's a good enough sort, and that he can still visit you and Rangiku any time he pleases. But although he still keeps in touch, there are times when you're not sure what he gets up to: just that he rose rapidly to the third seat position.

Rangiku enters the academy as well, completing its curriculum in two years. In the mean time Isshin has taken over Tenth Division from its previous Captain, who has grown too old and sick to command any longer. You hear he runs his Division well, even if his attitude is a little more flip than most of his peers. Rose was promoted as well, replacing the former Captain of Third Division.

In Sixth Division, young Byakuya has replaced Sojun. Sadly, the older Kuchiki was killed while on a mission... you didn't know him perhaps as well as you could have, but he seemed a decent sort. If nothing else, the sudden rise to prominence has made Byakuya even more of a hardass. Which is absolutely astounding.

Under Captain Unohana's guidance, the Shinigami Women's Association has increased its yearly budget and influence, though Yoruichi has politely declined to attend any more meetings. She claims that “it's totally asinine,” and from what you've seen you're actually tempted to agree. They did produce a nice calendar with a good picture of you sparring with Kai, though.

In 1890, something extraordinary occurs.

“Hey, Riku!” Yoruichi interrupts you as you put the finishing touches on yet another article for Captain Muguruma. The pay's good, but this is getting completely ridiculous. You can only forestall “My Lovely Samurai” for so long, dammit.

“What's up, Captain?”

She's wearing her white jacket for once... must be something official. “Kisuke's being promoted to Captain of the Twelfth Division. That means you're next in line for a promotion.”

“Wait, what happened to Captain Hikifune?” you press, not understanding what must have happened to create an opening.

Yoruichi's grin softens a little as she considers how to phrase it. “She got... promoted, Riku. It's hard to explain. You have time?”

“I'm all ears.”

Part of the deal with SoZ that even makes it tough for me to keep up with? It started to get away from me around thread #35 or so. So many pilots, so many factions, so many subplots and technical advancements... it was a definite learning experience, and there were mistakes I made there that I've been determined not to repeat here.

I still have fun with both though, and SoZ will get to the logical conclusion. It may need a short hiatus here and there, but it'll get there.

By noticing when he starts being distant and confronting him about what's wrong. Unlike Rangiku whose feelings make her hesitant to drag the truth out of him we're in a more maternal role and thus better suited to tell him to be straight with us on what's bothering him.
>>
>>39640689
I meant saving him from aizen not OMG.

Slowly, but surely, things have changed. There's one MASSIVE change that was in place from the beginning, though, and as the plot advances the possibility for vastly changing events increases.

Actually, yes. I intended SoZ to be much shorter than it turned out, as practice for an 'original' setting that sort of fell by the wayside as I realized how heavily derivative it actually was.

If Riku is still around, she likely won't hold back.

They go to introduce themselves.

Riku hits them with 2 simultaneous level 90 kido's to start.

>>39641726

If Riku hits bankai, he probably will be worthless. So many of the abilities are fucked vs Riku's bankai.

If Riku can stay in range.

Good luck stealing the bankai then too.
>>
>>39641726
Actually that raises a good point, due to its nature won't our bankai be immune to that bullshit?

Thanks for letting me ignore it in my headcanon, at least. Night.

I don't even know why I am so against it, I usually don't have anything against romance in quests- I especially like the one in HMQ. I guess it's because this is Bleach and there's no romance in Bleach that doesn't suck balls. Oh well, now we can stop shitposting about it at least.

Even if they do steal that Bankai, they're probably fucked. They can't use Volstandig when they have a stolen Bankai, and we're specifically training so that we can fight while affected by the same limitations that the enemy might face. And if they decide not to use it, we still have kido.

I think you can blame the rabid shippers for that and I'd totally understand.
The romantic delivery regarding Kaien and Miyako, Byakuya and Hisana, Isshin and Masaki, and I guess Ryuken and Sanae, are pretty sweet in their own way.
Then again, adults.

Like them stealing Tenkotsuki and having her insult them in their head would be an improvement.

Especially as Riku rip them apart.

Riku, a quincy in her former life has the ultimate anti-quincy bankai.

Riku will probably be named a war potential if the bankai is discovered by Ywach.

Well we did tweak the timeline, Gin went to the Academy sooner then he would normally. Normal timeline has him entering at like 1890.

Rangiku also went earlier then normal too.

So who knows how much changed. They were probably better trained then most there too.
