You are, currently, engaging in something resembling a competition.

If you were aware of such things, you'd say it was the sort of thing where everyone involved would get a trophy, everyone's parents gathered in a polite circle, clapping and cheering.

As it is, you're currently Esmerelda- Though most everyone calls you Ezzy now, which you like to occasionally complain about, even if it gives you the warm fuzzies.
Having friends is pretty great. Having friends who enjoy your company enough to bring you places, give you a nickname and put up with you-

It's not really something you thought you'd have.

In any case- All this is distracting you from your current state of being.
Which is, specifically, racing a moth through the underbrush, both of you armed, with the intention to prove to the other- and to Lyra, your overly large spider friend- that you are a good hunter, a better hunter than your competitor.

That you're hunting rabbits, and other... less formidable foes is besides the point.

>You've got, y'know, snake senses. You can track them. Probably.
>Rabbits live underground, right? And you lived underground. So you know where things that live underground live?
>Follow Nin. Steal her rabbits, you're faster!
>Other(?)

Looks like the tiny snek has learned some things since leaving the tiny tiny dirt house, Yes?
>>
It's time to put your nose to the grindstone, and-

No, you don't really understand that. You get that it's a metaphor and all, but what does sticking bits of yourself against something that will tear them off have to do with working hard?
It doesn't make any real sense.

Well, with the lack of grindstones available in the forest, you settle for what you know best-

Flicking your tongue out to taste the air, following the vaguest hints of animal scents as you undulate beneath bushes and over roots.

They'll be near a tree for sure- something the can burrow beneath, with cover from weather and stuff.
You follow the scent trail easily, slither faster and faster as it grows stronger.

Trees and grass and dirt blur around you as you burst from the woods- right into a small pack of rabbits, the whole lot of them freezing as they spot you.

There's a split second of silence-

And then Nin bursts from the foliage overhead, shouting "AHA!", and everything gets very messy very fast.

Bah. Nin will just cheat and use dust to win.
>>
>>39670949
I'd love it if she'd dust my snake. Get some of that rabbit action.
>>
>>39670960
A- are you trying to be lewd and not doing a very good job of it or is there a euphemism I'm missing here?
>>
>>39671049
What are you talking about? I just want Nin to win the Rabbit wars.
>>
>>39671049
Rabbits have a reputation for being obsessively lewd naturally due to the fact that they are a bottom of the food chain animal with a significant mortality rate. I think he was assuming lewd dust despite the fact that nin has paralytics also.

Huh, that just gave me an idea... nins dust and our sneakyness could go hand in hand easily, we could just flat out sneak into enemy encampments and poison everything ever.
>>
>>39671088
That would kinda require Nin to fly over the encampement, and she is kind of visible. Being all white and gold.
>>
>>39671110
Or bottle the dust and let the snake sneak in, like he was actually implying.
>>
>>39671110
Thats the wonderful part, nin doesn't need to fly over the encampment, she has a conviniently small, quick moving snake friend to disperse it for her.
>>
>>39671066
It occurs to me, if Nin wins this hunting contest, Lyra will never let us hear the end of it.

Ezzy will have lost a hunting competition against a herbivore. She'd be worse at hunting than a plant eater!
>>
>>39671118
I was assuming he meant, actual lethal poisoning, I didn't really see any sense in using dust when Ezzy already got her own posion to deliver.
>>
>>39671118
If we ever encounter something Lyra can't just steamroller, that would be a good idea.
>>
>>39671177
Ezzy is venomous, but snake venom is a highly finite resource, and it is extremely energy intensive to produce. In other words, her lethal venom wouldn't be enough for more than a few people, hell, I'm thinking currently less than four people could be poisoned by ezzy alone. Nin, on the other hand, produces a very large amount of dust and as her poisons are a skin absorbed/inhaled powder they are easier to disperse than liquid venom, which usually requires direct exposure to the blood stream.
>>
>>39671177
Tiny snek with tiny venom glands.

The Moth can apparently produce large quantities of highly potent dust. Enough to drop Lyra if she's immobilised for a few moments.

This would also give us non-lethal options. Like a bandit camp that captured a load of slaves. Lyra just charging in wouldn't be the best option, they could kill the captives. Dosing everything with sleep powder would work great in that situation.
>>
>>39671265
We should up Lyras stealth skills. The thought of her launching web lines onto unsuspecting bandits and pulling it back rapidly, like a deranged spider fisherman, has me highly amused.
>>
>>39671297
She is a giant glowing spider... good luck mate.
>>
>>39671320
She only glows when using her powers, not 24/7.
She is self heated 24/7, if that is what your thinking.
>>
>>39671346
She glows slightly at the tips of her legs, IIRC.
Shouldn't be too hard to cover up though.
>>
>>39671297
>>39671320
Maybe if we went in another direction for stealth. Down, for example.

Could Lyra use her earth powers to tunnel quickly and quietly through the ground? In a way that isn't loud and obvious to those above?

Trapdoor Spider when?
>>
>>39671320
>>39671390
Volcanos pretend to be mountains all the time.
Lyra can pretend to be a non-face-melty-spider for a while I'm sure.
>>
You coil and spring, the whiplike movement hurling towards your target-
The biggest rabbit in the pack.

It's moving towards you at the same time, the force of it knocking the breath from your lungs, even as you try and force your tail to wrap around it, the spear in your hand momentarily forgotten.

Nin at least, isn't having the easiest time-
All her training having been directed to fighting things stronger and larger than her, towards defence, and no real predatory instincts to fall back on-

She's trying to stab rabbits, and not really hitting anything at all, fuming and flailing as they hit the bushes, vanishing into the woods.

You catch your second wind, your length winding about the creature's neck- A rabbit is no Lyra. It flails around, trying to dislodge you as your coils tighten, crushing it till you hear an audible snap, the furry thing dropping to the ground with a twitch.

One down!

Nin is looking dismayed already, her little blade making a 'fwip' noise as she flicks it irritably.

Hey, wait a minute-

"Well, that wouldn't be fair, right? I'm gonna beat you properly-"

You set your tongue and nose to work- even if they're doing much the same thing in this instance.

Nin, thankfully, has a bag to carry your catches with- tucking away the rabbit and fluttering into the air as she starts following you again.

You wind up picking a random direction to start- you won't be able to find a scent here, not with the smell of all the animals you just chased off, so you move till it fades, replaced by the barely there scent-trails of all sorts of creatures.

And then you start again.

One trail ends with a burst of scent, and the sudden smell of a wolf- A wolf wolf, not a Sheszka wolf.
Another is simply too old to follow, slipping away and leaving you hissing needlessly in the woods.

The final one proves worthwhile:
Leading you straight to a burrow- empty now, but likely to be full very, very soon.

You settle in to wait, silent and deadly.

Or you try, but Nin is there with you.

"So, what's it like?"
"What'sss what like?"
"You can track scents, right? Kind of like Shesz? I think Lyra can too, and just sort of doesn't? I've seen her sniffing at things."
" I can follow trails and scents. It's like... You follow a scent, and if it's getting stronger, that means it's getting fresher, and that means you're getting close."

"Oh. I can feel stuff with my antennae."
"Stuff?"
"Wind. Things getting too close. Sometimes magic. Wizard magic. Like, Sara or their dad. What's with your tongue?"
"There isssn't anything wrong with my tongue!"

"Okay, but you stick it out all the time."
"That's how I sssmell!"
"But you've got a nose, right? It's right there."
"I use both! It'sss like- Lyra has six eyes, but she can see with only two, right!"

"Okay, got it."

There's a moment of quiet before bushes start rustling again, smells growing stronger-
Your breakfast is imminent.

"They're here!" You whisper.

"Dussst them!"

The little- comparatively little, specifically to another grown person with a human type body shape and size, not little compared to you-

Anyway, Nin doesn't need much in the way of encouragement, taking to the air despite the close growth, wings almost vibrating as she flutters them, soft clouds of dust drifting towards the animals-

And then run right through it, more than a few keeling over, legs giving way mid leap, leaving to drive facefirst into the ground.
You hiss to yourself with satisfaction.
Take that, rabbits!

And then you're off, Your shirt pulled up over your mouth and nose.

The rabbits can't really fight back.
Or they couldn't fight back in the first place, and now that they're paralyzed or whatever, they're even worse off, and basically just lying around and asking to be eaten.

You'd indulge them right now, but it turns out that there's a pair of problems.

The first is that they are coated in dust and you'd likely paralyze yourself in the attempt.

The second is that not all rabbits were hit by the dust- and one in particular, armed with a horn, is now attempting to skewer you.

You fend off the first attempt with your spear, slapping it away before it pierces you as the rabbit bounds by-

There is absolutely no way you are going to get killed by an animal that eats grass.

You twist sideways as it drives by again, head lowered-

Nin is probably shouting something, but you're hissing too loud to hear her anymore.
Snakes don't get killed by rabbits. Rabbits get eaten by snakes! That's the rule!
You're going to stab this thing, and then you are going to swallow all of it and sit on Lyra and moan because your stomach is way too full and there'll be a rabbit shape in your gut for a week-

Your tail, left flat on the ground as you dodge again, snaps up as the little bastard passes by, wrapping around its midsection even as it continues it's charge, dragging you.

You yell, muffled by your mouth cover, and jam your little spear into its side, again and again, staining its fur red as it tries to shake you off, to get your in front of its horn once more.

Your tail tightens, raising you off the ground, over its back- and you strike at its neck, driving the spear as deep as you can, forcing its head down to the dirt and pinning it there as it kicks, weakening.

It expires quietly, legs slowing, and you're left atop the body, half covered in blood and apparently still yelling and hissing-

"Are you okay? It didn't hit you, did it?"

"Wha- what?"
"You're covered in blood- I'll get dust, gimme a sec-"
"I'm fine. I'm fine. I won. I did it! No rabbit beats me! This one is mine! I'm going to eat it!"
"Um- It's a little big-"

"I'm gonna eat all of it and then I'm gonna be sssick! Yesss!"
You laugh off the rush of adrenaline, the pounding of your heart, spear over head and triumphant, as Nin gives you a little round of applause in the morning light.

How is Ezzy going to deal with that horn? Or should we just not worry about that?
>>
>>39675638

We are either going to have it be the tip of our spear, make a dagger out of it, or just keep it as a general trophy.

Nature, uh, finds a way?
>>
>>39675586
So Ezzy has no portion control and were going to have one fat snake next time.

Cut it off, probably.
For all her bluster, she likely won't swallow it whole. She's been a bit spoiled with cooked food.

>>39675703
She does do the whole, eat for a few days at once thing!

In some of the earlier threads there was discussion about what happened to monsters that ate other sentient monsters. That bad things happened to them in general with their development and evolution.
If we'd gone full murder eatery would Lyra have ended up looking more like this?

See ya next time!

Thanks for the game.

Only if you make a habit out of it.
