You are Kusajishi Riku, Lieutenant of the Second Division of the Court Guard, and for a long time you've wondered what the hell Shinigami like you were meant to be “guarding”. And today, you're apparently going to find out the answer to that question.

Captain Yoruichi has taken you and Kisuke to the relatively modest house where Captain Hikifune of Twelfth Division lives. The interior has been largely stripped bare of any personal objects or furnishings, as its owner is set to move out in a few days' time, but luckily there was still enough left for the Captain to prepare for guests.

“Sorry about the state of things,” Kirio greets you wearily, waving you into a parlor room. “Getting anything to or from the palace is a pain in the butt. Had to pack my stuff away well in advance.”

“It doesn't matter,” Yoruichi shrugs. “We're not here to buy the place.”

“So this is the man who's replacing me, then?” the well-endowed woman muses, looking Kisuke over. “Urahara, right?”

Kisuke smiles, scratching idly at his hair. “I suppose I am... though I'm still a bit overwhelmed, honestly! Someone may have to pinch me!”

“Y'mean this loser's our new Captain?” a familiarly irritating voice interrupts before you get the chance to take Kisuke up on his request: it's Hiyori, who's brought out a tray with tea and cakes. Likely on Kirio's orders, of course, but it's still surprising to see her doing something so menial.

“Yup!” Kirio replies, taking a moment to sip her tea. “So I'd better not hear any complaints about you, you hear?”

“Yes, ma'am,” Hiyori grumbles.

“Whatcha thinking?” Yoruichi asks you suddenly. “You haven't said anything since we got here. Cat got your tongue?”

You sip at your own tea, while surveying the room. “Good tea. Nice house.”

“The service could use a little work, though,” Yoruichi adds, smirking at Hiyori.

“So you have any plans yet?” Kirio asks Kisuke as Hiyori stomps off to the kitchen.

He nods thoughtfully, taking a bite from one of the cakes. “Actually, I do. These are good, by the way.”

“Made them myself.”

“Anyway, I was thinking about continuing some of your research,” Kisuke continues. “Maybe even branch out and pursue my own research more intensely.”

“I like it,” Kirio muses. “Ambitious.”

Yoruichi nods in agreement before turning to her friend. “You don't know the half of it. Tell her.”

“I want to start a dedicated research bureau,” Kisuke informs Kirio. “The problem's been that revolutionary advances like the Asauchi, gigai, and artificial souls are few and far between. Way I see it up till now it's been the work of a few brilliant individuals who found the time and support... well, I think it's finally time to put support and organization in place permanently.”

“That sounds reasonable,” Kirio admits. “Though I wonder if the Central 46 will see it that way.”

If I were to go by IC topics, then one guess might involve accommodating the amount of souls every time the mortal world has a crisis.
Maybe those Artificial Souls might come into play for it? I dunno.
>>
>>39671953
>>Suggest something for Kisuke to work on?
That mod soul ballest idea an anon came up with a few threads ago?
Basically, make a large number of artificial souls, construct storage area's in the world of the living and SS, and shuttle the souls between the two whenever there's a war or what have you that requires it.

One thing I'd also like to do would be to place some kind of tracer on hollows that tracks them even affter they were purified. Because the fact that we still don't know what happens to an Adjuchas class Menos after it's killed by a Zanpakuto is kind of galling.

Toshiro Hitsyuga. It is actually a crazy theory in some parts of the fandom.
>>
>>39672098
What?
>>
>>39672129
Yeah, though depending on how Central 46 might swing their authority, it'd be one of two plans which makes me worried.

1) Ditch a number of emergency souls to Hueco Mundo as Seireitei takes all the... soul refugees, I suppose?
2) Leave said Pluses for Hollow feed, and manifest Artificial Souls within Seireitei premises as more and more Hollowfied Pluses occupy Hueco Mundo.

Now, which one is easier to manage that they will most likely vote on?

“The Royal Guard,” you muse thoughtfully. “And here I had no idea Soul Society even had a king. Who is he?”

Yoruichi shrugs. “We don't, really. The Central 46 are in charge of anything political. And this king's not really a 'who'... more of a 'what', really.”

“The Soul King is the lynchpin that keeps the cycle of life, death, and rebirth working smoothly,” Kirio explains. “Shinigami serve the dual role of protecting the area around the Soul King's palace as well as balancing the flow of souls throughout all parts of the cycle.”

That makes more sense. But still, if Shinigami are “balancers”, and something like the Soul King exists...

“Is it a god?” you ask.

There are a few seconds of contemplative silence before Yoruichi answers you. “I don't actually know what it is, or where it came from. It's outside my expertise.”

“Soooo...” you begin, straining to come up with a new topic. “How do you get into the Royal Guard, exactly?”

“Mostly you have to come up with something new and useful,” Kirio explains. “Something that demonstrates an understanding of how the spiritual world works as well as mastery of its mechanics. In my case, I came up with a method of creating artificial souls, or gikon. Two others I know of were the man who invented the Asauchi and the man who first attained Bankai.”

“You said something about artificial souls?” you ask, ignoring for the moment the impressive list of achievements that have gotten people into the Royal Guard.

“My my,” Kirio replies, putting on an air of feigned modesty. “I didn't think you'd ever ask!”

“Could we use those as “ballast” next time there's a major catastrophe in the human world?” At that thought, Kirio drops her act and turns to Urahara.

“I'm not sure,” she admits. “What's your professional opinion, Captain Urahara?"
(1/2)
>>
>>39672602
“It's possible,” he mutters, holding his chin in thought. When he gets like this, focused on a single problem, it's almost like he's a different man altogether. Or maybe he's the same man... just more obvious about it.

“It would be more humane than the alternative, but we would need to have a large number of them on hand at any given point. And having more souls on our end would unbalance the cycle just as badly... tricky,” he mutters. “I'll work on it.”

Kirio gives Yoruichi a relaxed smile. “Seeing him like that, now I understand. I think he may make a good Captain after all.”

You spend a little time talking with your peers, finishing your tea and the delicious, jammy cakes Kirio made to go with them. All the while Hiyori glares at Kisuke in silence. You know that look all to well. When it finally comes time for you to excuse yourself, you pull Kisuke aside.

“So listen,” you tell him. “Talking with Hiyori is always like watching a race between her mouth, her fists, and her brain... and her brain usually comes in last place.”

“Ah, so you're concerned for my safety?” Kisuke teases you. “How thoughtful.”

“I just don't want to listen to her complaining about you,” you reply. “Remember, I've gotta work with her too.”

Finally, you're free to handle something that's been bugging you for a while. You stride across one building after the next, finally arriving at the 10th Division barracks. Isshin's lounging on the roof of his office, probably trying to avoid paperwork.

“Sup?” he grunts as you come to a halt beside him. “I take it you're looking for my third seat?”

You nod. “Yeah, personal business. Sorry I'm not just here to chat with you.”

“It's not like I can say I'm surprised,” he tells you, rolling away from you onto his side. “You're never here to talk to me. She's in the sparrin' hall.”

“We'll go drinking some other time, maybe,” you reply.

“Sure. Whatever.”

While the Captain gets back to his afternoon nap, you head into the hall to find Rangiku. She's grown taller in the last several years, not to mention having finally filled her own frame nicely. A little topheavy, perhaps, but she doesn't seem to mind it too much. She's also shorn her orange hair short, to a length just a bit longer than Yoruichi's. Around her waist is a new personal touch: a pink sash, vaguely reminiscent of your own. Only more... well, more pink.
(1/2)
>>
>>39673295
“You got a moment, third seat?” you ask as she brings down her Zanpakuto. A little more impersonal than you usually like, but this is a very public place and you're here to talk about something very private.

She nods, seemingly taking the hint. “Always. But can you do me a favor? I wanna practice using Haineko's shikai, but it's no good with targets that just sit there. Cant really get a feel for it that way.”

“Sure,” you reply casually. “You kids grow up so fast, I lose track of it sometimes. I wanna see what you can do now.”

Rangiku smiles playfully, pointing her Zanpakuto at you as the few Tenth Division members in the training hall give you a wide berth. “Aw, shucks. Guess I'll have to make mommy proud, then.”

“Growl, Haineko!”

The blade of Rangiku's sword disintegrates almost instantly into a cloud of dust, which she sends forwards to surround you. You're vaguely aware of what this weapon does: it allows her to cut her targets with the dust as if it were her blade. A physical type Zanpakuto, but one that manages to be interesting nonetheless.

You wonder just how proficient she's gotten with it.

You settle in for a nice sparring session, watching carefully as the cloud of ashes begins to swirl and shift all around you. You want to make sure her technique is as solid as possible, due to the fact that while Haineko's ashes are around you Rangiku has no blade of her own.

You eye her stance carefully: solid. The movements of the ashes aren't too easily predictable, and they're moving with decent enough speed. No real problems so far.

With a cry, Rangiku brings the hilt of her sword down in a simple slash. You see the ashes shift, but too late to prevent the attack from putting a little cut in your left bicep.

"Huh," you mutter. "That was weird."

"What, that I hit you?" Rangiku grins. "I've been getting better, right?"

You shake your head in frustration. "No, that I didn't see that attack as well as I should've. I guess my mind's in another place. I'm not focused."

"It's Gin, isn't it?" she replies calmly, as Haineko's ashes settle down into a slowly revolving could around your feet. "It's bothering you."

You nod in confirmation.

“Sorry,” you apologize. “Here I'm trying to help you, and now I'm gonna foist off my problems on you.”

Rangiku shrugs as she recalls her sword. “I'm concerned too, honestly.”

“Let's find someplace quieter,” you suggest, leading your adoptive daughter outside. A nearby roof provides the sort of isolated corner you're looking for.

You sigh, scratching the back of your head as you try and consider a way to give voice to your concerns. “So... has Gin been talking to you about what he's been up to?”

Rangiku shakes her head sadly. “No, not really.”

“He keeps disappearing on us both, then,” you continue. “I asked his Captain about it, and he assures me Aizen's taken him under his wing. But nothing really about what they've been doing, aside from missions.”

“He's always been like that,” Rangiku admits. “Sometimes he just disappeared for a while when we were in the Rukongai, but he always came back. So I never really asked. Assumed he was stealing food for us or something.”

“I'm half tempted to drop in on him and grill 'im until he starts talking,” you confess. “But that's not going to work, is it?”

Rangiku shakes her head. “Of course not. He's always been stubborn like that, hasn't he?”

“Tell you what. Next time you see him, send him my way, would you?”

“Of course,” Rangiku replies, resting her hand lightly on her hip. “I'll see if I can't get him to open up to me, too. Maybe one or the other of us can figure him out.”

You nod, satisfied that that's probably the best arrangement you can reach. Gin's always been an unusual kid: he's always seeing something other people don't, and usually keeping it quiet. He prefers to handle things on his own rather than trust in others, even in you or Rangiku, preferring to solve problems and take risks so that others don't have to.

When he makes Captain some day people may look up to him for that sense of duty, you think. But right now, it's damned inconvenient.

“So,” Rangiku sighs. “Should we maintain appearances and finish sparring, or are you kinda done? I'd understand either way.”

"Come on," you encourage Rangiku. "Show me what you've got."

She smiles, releasing her sword once more and letting the ashes drift towards you on the wind. "You've got it!"

The ashes spin around you again, faster this time. A downward slash from Rangiku sends ashes slashing at you again, though this time you dodge. Then Haineko does something different: the ashes disperse a bit more, leaving a much more open area for you to maneuver in. But every time you take a step, you're forced to evade as a different cloud of dust takes the initiative. Hell of it is this way you can't tell which patch of blade Rangiku's using.

"Clever," you commend her. "But you're missing one crucial detail."

Rangiku raises an eyebrow. "Oh? And just what..."

Your elbow interrupts her though as it crashes into her forehead. "You're standing still. If you can't move Haineko fast enough to defend and attack at will, you have to keep moving."

After Rangiku recovers her footing, she bows respectfully. "Sorry, ma'am. I'll work on it for next time..."

Something about that pause feels off. Oh, is that a bit of dust on your uniform?

"Hadō 11: Tsuzuri Raiden!" Rangiku calls out, and all around you Haineko's dusty blade erupts with a current of electricity. That was actually a pretty neat trick... it seems that Haineko's particles can conduct electricity as though it were a solid blade just the same as it cuts.

You prod Rangiku gently in the back of her head as your Utsusemi clone dissipates. "That was brilliant, Rangiku," you laud her. "Try it with Ōkasen when you learn it."

"How'd you avoid it?" she asks, astonished. She doesn't even turn around, she's so surprised.

You shrug. "I was thinking about taking my top off, but I decided to just take the shock instead. Didn't wanna embarrass you."

"That's good," she sighs. She doesn't need to know that you really DID take your top off for a single instant... it's just you put it back on just as quick.

The next few weeks roll past uneventfully. Kisuke, after reading an article you wrote for Captain Muguruma about Hijikata's adoption of western rifles near the end of the revolution and the modern warfare techniques espoused by the Ishin Shishi forces, has been tinkering with a rifle that can fire bullets made from compressed reiatsu. He's had you help him test the theories behind properly loading the metallic rounds, no doubt because he's aware of your past life as a Quincy musketeer. Unsurprisingly, you've proven very adept at compressing enough energy into one of those shells, to the point that when you tried firing one at full power it burst the barrel of the weapon and melted the action.

Kisuke had to start over from scratch after that, but his new assistant Mayuri managed to help the project recover.

Finally, Rangiku manages to send Gin your way for a talk. He bows slightly when he sees you: he's grown taller, you note.

“Miss Riku, how're you doin'?”

You gesture for him to sit. “I think you know the answer, Gin. I'm worried: Rangiku and I both are.”

“Oh? Whatever about?” The young man's brow furrows ever so slightly... you can't be sure if he's thinking about something, or if he's concerned.

“You've been in and out of touch with us,” you explain. “There are times we have no idea where you are, and it makes us both nervous. If you're in trouble or something, you know you can tell me, right?”

After a moment, Gin smiles back at you as if nothing is wrong. “Oh, I'm well aware of that, Miss Riku. Rest easy, you'd be the first to know.”

“Unless tellin' you would put you an' Rangiku in danger, of course.”

You rest your forehead in your hand. “Gin...”

“Whoops! Forget I said that, Miss Riku.” The young silver-haired man bows just a bit deeper than usual, before turning to leave.

“I'll be 'round fer dinner, if that's okay.”

Yeah. They know what he's up to so they're flipping out on him about it. When Riku just knows he's been getting further away and might be up to "Something."
>>
>>39675873
“Gin.”

The young man, who you've come to think of as almost like a son, turns around to hear what you have to say.

“You keep forgetting that you're not alone: I have things I want to protect too. If you keep insisting on doing everything by yourself, I'll have no choice as your elder than to beat the lesson into you. Get it?”

After a moment, his obviously forced smile fades a little. “I understand, Miss Riku. And I'm sorry.”

Then he's gone again. You sigh, and return to reviewing your mission reports.

Nine years pass, with everything seeming to be alright again. Kai volunteered to field test one of Kisuke's rifles alongside his Zanpakuto, mounting the blade to the end of the weapon like a bayonet while his tinbe protects him. Though the Central 46 seems weary of allowing mass-production of bayonet-style Asauchi or rifle-type weapons, Kai's at least proven the concept.

You've also managed to find time to do some studying on Quincies. There are a few techniques that sound interesting, but unfortunately good teachers are rare these days. Still, if you found one you'd at least know what to ask them about. Over time you've also managed to find a few chances to get far enough out of the way to really work on your Bankai in secret. The fancy clothes Tenkotsuki makes you wear when you use it, though... so awkward to move in you're sure she's doing it to punish you. But after a little while, you're kind of adapting.

But not everything is going so smoothly. You've been hearing more and more reports of people going missing in the Rukongai under a variety of circumstances. Some are suspicious, others seem more mundane, and the majority are just completely unknown. In fact, a meeting has been called between the Captains to discuss the issue.

“I won't be long, Lieutenant,” Yoruichi tells you as she prepares to head out. “I'm sure there'll be no need for me to give you the rundown later... okay?”

Yeah, that's definitely your cue to follow her. After all what good is being in the Stealth Force if you can't get away with a little eavesdropping? Granted they're all Captains at this point, but so are you in all but name.

“Tenkotsuki?”

The familiar voice in the back of your mind returns. “Yes, my dear Riku? I take it you wish for my assistance?”

Your sword shifts obediently into its released form, even without your using the calling phrase: a trick you picked up a few years back. “Yeah. I'm about to use a full-incanted Kyokkō. Can you modify it for me?”

“That spell's not too much fun,” Tenkotsuki sighs. “It would be far more exciting if you would use such a technique with a hadō, or even a bakudō.”

“Can you do it?” you repeat.

“Who do you think I am, my sweet, foolish mistress?”

“Huh,” you mutter as you finish the incantation. “My spiritual pressure's gone, but I'm not invisible.”

Tenkotsuki tuts lightly to herself. “I suppose you cannot tell when it's happening to you, but I have altered the spell. Instead of that inefficient trick of bending the light, I've simply made it so that nobody will want to look in your direction.”

“If you've ever seen something out of the corner of your eye that you're sure can't really be there, that is essentially you right now. Remember that next time you get that feeling yourself.”

Wow, that's... actually a bit disturbing. Why does your sword SAY shit like that sometimes?

It's a question for another day. You leave the barracks, carefully avoiding bumping into any other Shinigami along your way. One or two even turn their heads to look away from you, ostensibly to speak to someone near them, in order for you to pass unnoticed. This is so fucking creepy.

Finally you arrive at the First Division meeting hall, slipping in through the door right behind Lord Ginrei as he joins the rest of his peers.

“My deepest apologies,” Ginrei offers sternly. “I was delayed with family business.”

“Byakuya?” Yoruichi asks.

Ginrei nods. “Byakuya.”

“No matter, Captain Kuchiki,” the Head Captain replies calmly as your unwitting escort takes his position. You on the other hand lean against the back wall, finding a nice spot where the Captains won't be too confused about not being able to look at.

“Now let us begin. Captain Muguruma, what is the status of the investigation?”

“Sir,” Kensei replies. “The team we sent into the Rukongai is still unaccounted for. It's been one week as of today.”

“This is grave news,” the old man announces. “Before, when the incidents were limited to Rukongai inhabitants it was easy to overlook the possible threat. Now that not one but ten Shinigami are missing, this has become a threat we must discern and eliminate without fail.”
>>
>>39677268
“I still don't know what could have caused these disappearances,” Kisuke replies warily. “Unless I know the exact cause, there's no guarantee any Shinigami we send won't end up missing as well.”

“That's a risk we'll have to take,” Unohana replies. “I volunteer to lead the follow-up mission.”

The Head Captain frowns deeply at the Fourth Division Captain. “Denied. It would be too risky to send our most capable healers into an unknown danger.”

“Then who?” Shunsui asks. “Perhaps Captains and Lieutenants would provide a better chance of figuring this out?”

“I'll lead,” Kensei offers. “The Commandos will come with me.”

The Old Man nods silently as Kensei departs. The other Captains mill around for a while, talking amongst themselves.

As tempted as you are to just follow them, that's never been the way you've done things. Playing things intelligently and carefully is what separates the Stealth Force from other Divisions like Eleventh: the victorious warrior, after all, is the one who wins the battle before even taking the field.

You use your little trick as Urahara walks to isolate him from the other Captains, by causing his head to turn and his path to deflect until you're confident you won't be noticed.

“Captain,” you whisper into his ear. “What exactly do you know that you're not saying?”

Kisuke stands still, trying not to show any signs of surprise. “The spirit bodies of the victims are breaking down,” he replies in a low voice, “leaving empty clothes behind. While I don't know how that's possible, I've modified a set of gigais to help stabilize any future victims. Without knowing the cause, though, they're impossible to calibrate.”

“Is it a Hollow?”

He shrugs. “Possibly. Who knows. So you were the reason I was meandering like that? To have a spell that doesn't let anyone look at you... that's a creepy sword you've got there.”

“Quit changing the subject,” you hiss. “I take it you're going to gather samples, right?”

“That's right.”

Actual correct usage of the phrase SPOILER ALERT
AIzen made a thing based on Urahara's research that, among other things, blurs the boundaries between Hollows and Shinigami and he's currently testing that function out. Unfortunately most shinigami are too weak to survive the provess and are destroyed by it, but Lieutenant/Captain class shinigami can though the process initially drives them berserk

In canon around this time things go very very wrong for a whole lot of the cast. Evil experiments going on in the background trying to REDACTED. Kensei, Bored captain, Fop Captain, Afro Captain, Kyoraku's Lt., Kensei's Lt, Hiyori, and a couple of others all have a very very bad day that impacts things to come for the next hundred years. It's the reason why Kisuke and Yoruichi end up slumming it in the mortal world.

“Can I help?” you ask.

“Unless you know more about the cause than I do,” Kisuke replies softly, “I think Kensei's team is doing everything that can be done right now. Though... some ninjas watching over them may be nice in case it's a Hollow they can't handle.”

“If anyone knows about powerful Hollows and their activities,” you mutter, “I think we both know who that would be.”

Kisuke bows his head. “In the underground training room you'll find the materials for the world-tying rite. I'll tell Yoruichi when I can get her alone.”

“Don't bother,” you reply. “After all, she'd expect me to tell her in person.”

“Of course. Good luck, Demon-Commander.”

You grin at the intentional Shinsengumi callout. “You too, Captain Moptop.”

Yoruichi's not hard to find along her route back to the barracks. You quietly approach her, addressing her in a soft but easily audible voice.

“I'm going to Hueco Mundo for a while,” you tell her. “Kisuke and I reckon that Vasto Lorde we met before may know something about these disappearances we haven't picked up on. Please send a few of my unit to track Kensei's party, but I don't think they should engage.”

She stops in her tracks, but doesn't turn to look at you. “I agree. And for future reference you don't need my permission, Riku. Just don't do anything too reckless.”

“You know me.”

Yoruichi crosses her arms and continues walking. “I do, nobody better. And that's why I'm nervous.”

The "World-Tying Rite": normally the only way in which a Shinigami can get from Soul Society to Hueco Mundo. Not technically illegal to know, but deeply frowned-upon to use. Though you know the theory behind opening a Garganta, which is how Hollows travel between worlds, you've never properly tried using it. If it fails, you may be stuck in the nothingness that's neither here nor there, and you're not sure where you'd come out... or if you'd come out at all.

"This may be an issue," Tenkotsuki muses. "Not even I have tried this technique."

LAST TIME Tenko said something like this we nearly lost our arm.

Lets not rush this and take the safe option and take the bus instead of the F1 Racecar.

Bail if there is a question on it.

Yeah backing opening it but being cautious and using world-tying rite instead if it doesn't feel safe.

Metagaming aside, are we really in such a hurry that we need to risk getting lost forever in another dimension? About how much longer are we talking, anyway.

If we go with Garganta, I want to add
>pay attention to Tenkotsuki. If she's not sure it's safe, we should consider carefully before going.
Let's not lose an arm this time, ok guys?
>>
>>39678387
>Use the world-tying rite: slower, but probably less risk of failure.

We should practice Garganta sometime. I'd say just practice opening and closing, but I assume we are on a time limit.

Basically DON'T go through it if it seems shakey and have Tenkotsuki try and stabalise it beforehand

>>39678387
>Use the world-tying rite: slower, but probably less risk of failure.

Guys I know you're saying don't go through if it's iffy. But the whole iffy part is opening it.

As in it could black hole and rip a part off. Or as someone else said. Get us lost in space.
>>

>Use the world-tying rite: slower, but probably less risk of failure.

Has a good point. As long as it doesn't take like a week, we really don't have any reason to rush. But then again, if we don't have any reason to rush, then we might as well practice the Garganta, since we have little reason not to want to master it.
>>
>>39678387
>Use the world-tying rite: slower, but probably less risk of failure.

I get the feeling that anons are interpreting Tenko as having an issue with the World-Tying Rite, but it's actually the Garganta that she's worried about.

Well, Kisuke has one in the world of the living, (well, maybe not yet, but soon ish), Yoru has hers in the SS (or outside of it, whatever)

And the Vizards had one, too.

I also know of a lot from other media, so I get them mixed up.

Like Mayuri won't have a recording of us do this and use later.

I do like the idea of Shinigami rifles though. Granted the Central 46 is a bunch of old conservative pussies so not much will come of it.

It might help to have other options in combat against hollows too.

>This a Urahara & Kurotsuchi Spirit Rifle model 16. It has a kido reinforced barrel with amplification rituals in the rifling. As you can see it has fire select for when you want rapid fire or single large blasts. It even comes with a magazine holding 30 psuedo mod souls that can be expended to empower the shot. Don't worry they don't have anything resembling sentience or awareness they're just balls of condensed reiatsu. It even has a rail system so you can attach a spirit scope and an assortment of other useful modifications!
