The movie studio is in a bit of an awkward place to get to. You have to go along some long deserted roads that go into, what is now, a canyon. Apparently something cleaved the earth up here. The roads are nothing more than vague memories, and there’s a lot of old tunnels, and newer tunnels that look like they were attempts of either salvagers or Genesis to make some sense of this place. As a result, they caused more confusion, and now the place is a hopeless maze of tunnels, circular paths, dead ends, and large pillars of earth.

Pytor seems to know where he’s going though. He’s got one of his hand-drawn maps, and while he’ll pause to check his heading, he never seems to be lost. It’s not unusual for Pytor to not speak to you as he drives, or eats, or in general, but this time it feels different. You’re no longer Pytor’s Little Lupa…which you suppose is a good thing, and something that was going to happen eventually, but…it still stings.

Finally, you come out of the maze canyon, and out into a large valley that’s surrounded by green hills covered with grass and flowers. You frown. “Are those fallout flowers?” You ask.

Clean Energy Fallout is hard to tell without a meter. Usually the quickest way to know if you’re in fallout is when blood starts to drip from your nose, and then your ears, and then your organs shut down, and finally you collapse to the ground and die. However, there are some signs that can keep you from using that method. Clean Energy Fallout doesn’t seem to affect flora, and sometimes causes changes in them. In fallout zones, you’ll often see small flowers with petals that shimmer with interference rainbows, the same kind of sheen that oil makes when the sun hits it. Staying away from those flowers is a basic survival rule.

“The fallout up here has faded, but I think there was a power station underground.” Pyotr says. “Don’t go down stairs without your meter, no matter what state you’re in. Also, don’t drink anything, ground water’s contaminated for sure.

You nod. You wonder about the meters though. They’re technology that was present before the End. People, particularly the ones who would later create Genesis, found them and discovered how to re-create them rather quickly. Odd. Maybe people discovered that ‘Clean Energy’ wasn’t as clean as they thought before things went to shit.

Aurelian Studios is a large complex of buildings. A bunch of broken, and looted, trailers scattered here and there. A few buildings that look like houses, or small office buildings, and the huge, curved roofed, studio buildings. All of them have large steel security shutters covering every door and window. This stuff is heavy grade, you can see scratch marks, torn tow chains, and what looks like an explosion in one area.

“What is with the security?” You ask.

“That’s the same question I had, when I came here the first time.” Pyotr says. “Alright, it looks clear. No other salvagers, or other people. Do you see any of those Hubris things?”

You shake your head. No eyeless or anything else. You have the place to yourself.

“Alright,” He sighs. “Keep an eye out for something that means something to you, now that you’re one of these Joy people.”

If there are any, they're going to be underground, right? Lupa's tiny output can't compete with a power node.

Hopefully they won't bother us unless we poke them.

There’s a lot of movie posters, all of them featuring Joy-In-Gold. She’s dressed in a variety of costumes. There she is as Joy-In-Love, with a pink wig. Next to that is her as Misery, with runny eyeliner and a black wig. There’s her as a jungle princess. There’s her as a spaceship captain. And there’s her in an impractical looking environment suit and a gas mask, advertising her starring role in a post-apocalyptic action film.

There’s a lot of Civ writing on a few of the buildings ‘Commissary,’ ‘Production Offices,’ ‘Studio 3: PENINSULAR TRIUMPHANT.’ There’s a note below the sign that says “DO NOT enter while shooting! This means YOU West Wind!” The rest of the studio buildings have ‘PRIVATE PROJECT. AUTHORIZED CAST & CREW ONLY. TRESPASSERS WILL BE FIRED AND PROSECUTED.’

Ah, HA! Here we go! ‘GENERATOR STORAGE.’

This building isn’t as imposing as the others. It’s just a well-made metal shack. Also, the roof looks like it’s mostly ceramic tiles. There’s been a few attempts to open it, but not as many as on the big buildings.

You also notice very tiny Civ writing along the bottom of the blast door that’s covering the window.

Also, there’s a spot where the metal sheeting and the roof have worn away. You could maybe get a hook or something in there.

Yep, just as advertised, there's a small little keypad behind the building at the ground. 9-key number bad, each number has the standard three letters below it. You see on the display there's room for a 4 digit code.

(For this puzzle, assume the keypad looks like one you'd see when looking at your phone.)

There's a poster of Gold on the back of the shed. She's dressed for a noir film. Trench coat, fedora, cigarette in her teeth and a tommy gun in her hand. "CARESS OF SIN." Is the title.

There's shreds of other posters, and other posters that have been covered with a protective cover. They're all promoting different movies, and all of them have Gold on them.

Even the posters, rare that they are, that have other people, Gold's always the one front and center. Or the one in the passionate embrace, or the center of the group walking away from the explosion.

CHUNK!

The doors slide open all at once.

"So...egomaniac, and bad password maker." You mutter as you go back around and then open the door to the shed.

"Good job." He says.

"Shitty security." You say.

"Security is only as good as the people who arm it." Pytor says.

"Right, and how many nail bombs are hidden in the RV?" You say.

"Shh." Pytor steps inside of the shed, and then uses his flashlight to carefully scan the room. Then he bangs his crowbar against the side of the wall twice.

Nothing.

You both go inside.

The room is filled with shelves of batteries and generators. The generators are about the size of a mini-refrigerator. There's multiple leads for connection a bevy of devices on the top. The bottom consists of something that looks like one of the biggest batteries you've ever seen. Next to it is something that looks like a speaker driver. There's two wheels bolted to the side, and a metal handle with a trailer hitch.

There's about six of them parked in here.

The shelves have boxes of peanut batteries, and larger batteries. The majority of them appear to have been rusted to uselessness.

Nothing seems active at all.

There's civ writing along the side of one of the Generators. It's...kind of worn away though. But you make your best effort.

“Safety warnings…manufacturer…and ah!” You nod. “To recharge when exhausted, bring generator to Clean Energy Conduction Zone. Turn on Siphon. Wait until charge meter is full. DO NOT OVERCHARGE. Turn off Siphon.”

Below the ‘speaker’ driver is ‘INTAKE’

You see a small little switch on the top of the generator you’re looking at, near the On/Off Switch. It’s labeled SIPHON.

“So, we get this near a Clean Energy source, and turn it on, and it starts working.” Pyotr says. “And you’re a living source now, correct?”

“Yeah. I think.” You say.

“Seems simple enough.” He looks at them. “Genesis would pay a LOT for even ONE of these things working. How long do they last?”

“In a Movie studio? Probably a week at most,” You say, guessing. “Genesis could possibly get months, maybe even a year.”

“If they work.” Pyotr says.

“If they work,” You nod.

“Alright.” Pyotr says. “When you’re ready?”

You look around and see if there's anything you DON'T want to hit with Clean Energy.

There's the piled of old rusted batteries, but they don't charge near you.

However, you realize that you're in a cramped room with six generators. Generators you aren't supposed to overcharge. You check the siphon switches and make sure that they're all off, save the one you want to charge.

Okay...this...this should work. You hope.n You close your eyes.

'Where do you find Joy?'

"I find Joy even in the Ashes."

A burst of light and you change into Joy-In-Ashes. The lights on the generator switch on instantly and the Charge Meter's needle JUMPS up and back.

You quickly snap the siphon off. The meter shows a full charge.

You notice that Joy is silent...right right, Siphons shut her up. Apparently even weak ones.

Nothing else seems to be turning on, sparking, or moving. Great! For once things actually worked as planned.

Of course, now the question is should you go back to being Lupa or not? You don't know if there are other things in the area that could react badly to your presence, not to mention you're a Hubris draw, and finally...well...Pytor never can quite look at your straight in the eye while you're Ashes.

You change back to Lupa. Then, with a grunt of effort, you haul the working generator out of the shed.

Pytor claps his hands in pleasure, and goes to inspect it. He asks a few questions about some of the writing, and you tell him what goes where and how it works.

"We could hook this up to the RV, or find some room to squeeze it in and this would still be one of our better days." He says.

"There's five more still in there." You say.

Pytor nods. "Not a bad option. Go seal the door again, so we can keep them safe for when we need them."

You pop around the back and punch in the code again. Not sure if it'll work, but thankfully it does. The security doors slide close.

You head back to Pytor, who's scratching his chin underneath his mask. "When I was here last, I discovered that these door have override boxes...at least that's what I think they are. If we use this, we can open up almost any building here."

"That wise?" You ask.

Pytor shrugs. "It's risky, no doubt. However, Genesis would pay a great deal if we could get them a working searchlight, or a large amount of fresh clothing. We have a chance opportunity."

You point at the second one. Pytor takes you over to the override box. "This symbol means Emergency, right?" He points at the symbol painted at it. "I see it on fire doors and first aid cabinets."

"Right in one." You say with a smile.

Pytor nods, and pries the box open. There's some fiddling between the two of you with wires, the generator, and the box, but after a few moment, the security doors slide away and you're free to enter the building. (Pytor hides the generator behind some overgrowth.)

You go inside the studio. It's pitch dark. However, you can see what's inside the studio with your flash lights.

It's a house.

A nice, small two story house. It's got a porch, a small backyard (That's dead and dried up.)

It also has, on the wall that's attached to the commissary, a small building with a glass front. It says 'CORNER STORE' on the sign.

You enter the house, and the first thing you see on the floor is a dead body.

She's in a mummified state, thanks to the sealing of the studio. So dried skin, no eyes, and skeletal frame.

It's a woman, judging by the dress. She also has an apron tied around her waist.

Judging by her position, she died by falling down the stairs of the entry way. Her neck is clearly broken. However, she's missing her right leg, and chunks of her left are missing. Those are clearly bite marks. Something was eating her, post-mortem.

She has an odd device around her head. It's a silvery headband, and it's got an eyepiece attached to it.

You gently take off the headband thing, and pocket it. Then you go upstairs.

The rooms are strange. The majority of them look like hotel rooms. There's a bed, dresser, some generic art on the wall. One has two posters of race-cars in it. Other than that, they're rather sterile.

The last room however, is a fully equipped girl's room. There's movie posters, boy bands, pictures of Joy-In-Hearts in action, and the dresser is a half-exploded mess of clothing.

This room is the most 'defined' however, all of it looks very carefully staged. Like that dirty shirt hanging from an unused bike charger in the corner...you can see someone throwing it on the handle bars, and maybe sticking it through a sleeve, but someone threaded the shirt, through the neck and out the sleeve so that it would hang on the bike handle, so that the logo on the shirt, looks like a flag, is clearly visible from someone lying on the bed.

Also, when you try to salvage the room, it's all surface. There's nothing in the dresser, the TV's a plastic shell, and the gadgets that are scattered around are all fake.

You look out the window and see the back yard.

Shit! You got a look of the thing. It's a Critter. What's worse is that it's a Feline.

They're fast, strong, have claws, teeth, good vision, aren't scared off by anything short of a bullet to the face, and are fine with fallout. Exceptionally territorial, unnervingly smart, and they hold insane grudges. Pytor says that he shot one once, and three months later the same damn Feline attacked him out of the blue by jumping down from a tree.

This one has shiny golden fur with black spots, pointed ears, four compound eyes, and a tail that splits in two at the end, both ends look like they're either barbed or have claws of their own. The claws are jet black, and the teeth hang out over the lower jaw like a row of white icicles that have needles jammed into the gaps.

And it gets worse. This thing is a mommy, because you can see little cubs at her feet.

Then it notices your light, and it springs towards the far end of the backyard. You see what it's heading for. There's an access tunnel that has it's hatch open.

The thing is crazy fast, before you can even say anything, the Golden Feline and her cubs have disappeared down the hole.

Is she getting others? Is she getting her cubs out of danger? Is she setting up and ambush later, or is she going for a different tunnel so she can rip your face off later?

Who knows!

"Pytor! Out back! A Feline just went down an access hatch! Back corner! Close it!"

You hear Pytor swearing as he runs out to seal the hatch. You can see him in the backyard, making full speed for the tunnel entrance.

While he's doing that, you close your eyes and focus.

'Wher-'

"In the Ashes. Make this quick before I'm eaten!"

Flare of light, and you're back to being Ashes.

You head back down and meet Pytor at the entrance to the house. He's got his shotgun out, and he's on edge. "There was a map on the lid of that tunnel. All five of these studios are connected. We don't know how big of a family we're talking about." He seems less uncomfortable talking to you as Ashes, at the moment. Nice to know hostile Critters can bridge that awkwardness gap.

"How did they get in here?" You ask.

Pytor shrugs. "Guessing? If there are corpses in here, then that means that people were sealed in here. That includes animals that eventually inbred and fed off of fallout to become whatever it was that you saw." He takes a deep breath. "So...what now?"

Seems like the least risky option. We don't want them coming after us later, but there's no need to go into their territory looking for trouble.

"Now we try one of the two buildings that don't have Felines living in them." You say.

"Agreed. Come on." Pytor says.

I'm fine with either.

Anyone else want to go into the communications equipment building anyway? Felines be damned. But that can wait until we have more people here since we'll definitely be coming back.
>>
>>39677384
I'm tempted to go after the felines and go for whatever we find in the communications building which would probably be good but I would rather not run into a whole pride of those things.
>>
>>39677144
You point at the last studio.

One door opening later, you head inside. Now THIS looks much more what you expected. There's micro battlefields, storefronts, war rooms, and a bunch of other sets set up. Cameras, lights, and a lot of technical looking equipment.

It does look like someone was making a war movie here. You even find a script!

Pytor's already grabbing one of the lone search-lights and pawing through racks of fake uniforms.

The more you look at this set, the weirder the other set was. No cameras, no makeup area, no real equipment.

You notice that Joy is unusually silent.

The overhead lights flicker.

"Did you do that?" Pytor asks.

"Maybe." You say. There must be a siphon somewhere. Makes sense, this place is filled with equipment. Must need more power than a few generators. Probably drew on the underground stuff, now it's drawing on you. It must not be close though, because other than Joy going quiet, you're fine. Also, the power is slowly coming back online, not all at once. Also, just for this building.

Ah. Now there's something slightly interesting. There's a small room that says SECURITY, and it's got a bunch of screens and a desk covered with what look like recording discs.

It also looks like someone took one of the (hopefully fake) Plastic-Glass guns, and used it to jam close a pair of double doors that lead to another room.

Speaking of reading material, we need to have a look at West Wind's diary again to see what security is still active. It'll be embarassing if we're trying to sell it to Genesis and the thing is blank or something.
>>

You stuff the script in your pack. Bedtime reading.

You sit down in the little chair, and just like before, the screen start coming to life, turning neutral blue. Better yet, the disc player also now has a little green light blinking on it.

There's one disc in the player already. You play it. It's of this room. Oh, and it's in color too, how nice. The detail on this thing is amazing.

It looks like everyone's going into the other room. Spirits are high, people are laughing, a few are wearing party hats.

Everything goes dead silent the moment the doors start to close. One minute of dead silence. Then the screaming and crashing begins.

A man in a robin-egg blue jumpsuit runs into the room. Blood is streaming from his nose, ears, and dripping from his mouth. He's trying to cover up a gash in his side and he's sobbing uncontrollably.

"EMERGENCY CLOSURE IN THREE MINUTES" An automated voice says.

The jumpsuited guy grabs a prop gun, jams it in the door, blocking it from opening, and then tears out of the studio.

Alright, that was interesting, now time to dig through these discs and see if there's anything else that screams 'IMPORTANT'

No. No working screens, either. Batteries just can't get them working. They run off of a siphon. The majority of things do, they have siphons in them, or near them. Siphons can't take fallout, they burn out, break, melt, or just plain don't work.

The days of pulling power out of thin air are LONG gone. It's why everyone drives crappy clunker cars or military vehicles with secondary systems. They run on batteries.
>>
>>39678233
Huuh. I'd expect more utter shock out of Lupa, if this is that amazing. I can understand glossing over that though.

The screen changes and you see a nervous looking girl standing on the battlefield stage. She’s looking at three people sitting in director’s chairs. One of them is Gold, looking unimpressed. Another is a woman who looks like she’s in her late-60s, early 70s. Albeit she looks REALLY good for that age, probably less than 10 years ago she’d be more attractive than Gold. She’s busy fiddling with a gadget in her hand that looks like a screen.

The last is a girl with soft pink hair, and you know it’s Joy-In-Love. It’s long enough that she’s made it into long ropes that loop around the back of her head in the shape of a heart. Gold and the older woman are dressed in business suits. Joy-In-Love is wearing her regalia, it looks like a wedding dress that’s been washed wrong. It’s slightly pink.

“Go ahead, Pamela!” Love says, with a voice that you can’t help but smile at. It’s just…so…eager and happy. “Read the script, please.”
“Hello,” She says, her eyes locked on the script. “How are you liking the school? I hope you’d like to join say the name of your favorite hobby club. We’d love to have you.”

The older woman doesn’t even look up from her work. Gold just looks at Love. “Really?” She says.

“Pamela,” Love says. “You don’t read the stuff that’s in the brackets. I want you to tell me what YOUR favorite hobby is, and then make it a club!”

“Oh.” Pamela says. “Okay.” She takes a deep breath. “Hello. How are you liking the school. I hope you’d li-“

“Enough.” Gold says.

“I’m sorry?” Pamela says.

“Not half as much as me.” She sighs. “I’d ask you to stay for background extra, but…no.”

“No?” The older woman asks.

“She doesn’t have any tits, her ass is negligible, her acting’s shit, and her face is dull. Next!” Gold says, she turns to a stack of papers next to her.

Pamela runs off crying.
>>
>>39678721
Love shoots Gold a look and then takes off after her.

“Why couldn’t we do this on one of Love’s sets?” The older woman asks.

“Still being built. Love’s being excessively exact in her instructions.” Gold snorts. “Has she told you ANYTHING about it?”

“No.” The older woman says. “I just get shown bits and pieces for review. I have an assumption, but it’s clear that Love wishes my assistance to be minimal.” She brushes a hand through her hair in annoyance.

“When did you stop wearing ribbons? They always looked good on you in the records.” Gold says.

“Eighty seven years ago.” The old woman says.

Love comes back. “Pamela will be in the cast.” She says.

“Seriously? You CAME to me to make a serious production, and THEN you march these people in front of me, and expect me to just nod and smile? West Wind is more picky about her casting and THAT’S mindless propaganda for the Pennis.”

“I don’t want actors, I want real. I NEED real.” She sighs and shakes her head. “They’re brave enough to stand before us, isn’t that enough for you?”
“No.” Gold scoffs. “I expect skill, or at least some talent.”

Love pinches her nose. “Go. Both of you. Go feed your lynxes or trade stocks or whatever. I’ll handle the rest.”

(cont)
>>
>>39678749
Gold shakes her head and gets off her chair, as the older woman does the same. “Can I at least know the name of this production, so I can make sure that when the late-night comedy hecklers hear about Joy-In-Love’s multi-billion dollar flop they’ll be ready for it?”

“I don’t HAVE a title for it.” Love says. “But you can call it HESTIA, and don’t worry about your hecklers.”

“Whatever.” Gold looks at the next person coming in. “Your acne is atrocious. Go home.”

“GOLD!” Love snaps.

“Later darling! Off to feed my babies!” She says in a sing-song.

The rest is less exciting. Just Love greeting a bunch of auditioning kids. She loves each and every one of their auditions, and signs them to her project then and there. Then she goes off for a lunch break and the video ends.

West Wind and Gold are arguing in the War Room set. It looks like they’r both wearing their regalia.

“I. Don’t. Fucking. Know.” Gold holds up a finger with each word.

“They were here, they took fucking PRESS pictures!” West Wind says.

“Yes, and they paid me a lot for that service, and she pays me even more to keep my MOUTH shut until AFTER!” Gold says. “Which I ALSO do for you! You think that all those enemies on our TV shows, or kiddie dramas that we air just HAPPEN to have Tributary colors on their uniform?”

“I shouldn’t have to PAY you to support your COUNTRY!” West Wind snaps. “You DON’T invite people from enemy counties over for LUNCH and BLOWJOBS!”

“My COUNTRY is this studio. I ship product to more places than just Peninsular. Also, since WHEN were we at war with Cliffsea? I thought we had just signed a big treaty that said that we weren’t!”

“They’re allies with Tributary. Also, that was a non-aggression pact, NOT a treaty. You can’t TRUST them.” She shakes her head “Why am I even trying to explain this to you?”

“Ooohh, you can’t trust Cliffsea, you can’t trust High Mesa, you CERTAINLY can’t trust Joy-Home…and I bet those people at the Unity Summit just make EVERY part of you clench.” Gold says. “But you trust your wonderful country, that trusts you SO much.”

(cont)
>>
>>39679296
West Wind sighs. “ARE you invited to the Summit?”

Gold shakes her head. “Nah. They thought I would ‘make light of a serious attempt at peace’ or some shit like that.” She scoffs. “You heard that Love blew them off right? She’s spending all her time at that little hideaway you gave her.”

“Yes.” West Wind sighs. “I do wish that they invited me. I’m not AGAINST another peace summit…”

“You just think Joy-in-Meadows is.” Gold says.

“No. It’s more complicated than that and you know it.” She groans. “Another peace summit in Joy Home where no one comes.”

“Keeps me in business.” Gold says.

“Do you know anything about what Love’s doing?” West Wind asks. “I know this is a part of it. You’ve given her nearly all of your studios.”

“Plenty of on location shooting available.” Gold says. “And also, who says no to Love?” She then taps her head. “And yes, I DO know QUITE a bit about what’s going on, but I’m not telling you a damn thing, and your hacker legion have already found out I wasn’t stupid enough to keep any records of it, save for up here.”

“In the interest of National Security,” West Wind says through gritted teeth. “I order you to-“

“Blow me, and if you do a good job, maybe I’ll tell you NICELY to fuck off.” Gold says.

At that point, West Wind lunges across the table to get at Gold, who fights back using pulses of golden light. The fight ends with about eight large, Accepting Security guards pull a shrieking West Wind off of Gold, screaming about treason.

Gold flips her off and walks away.

The tape ends.

'Huh. So...did we learn anything useful?'

'When did we come back to our senses?'

'When the siphon drained enough of us to stop being in emergency mode, it got back to working as normal. It's now draining the node, there's enough Non-Corrupted Clean Energy there to run this place at low power, and not drain us. Just don't turn on anything else."

So, some good news, apparently Gold must have made a deal with West Wind, between the two trying to kill each other. If Gold made Peninsular propaganda and war movies, then they got to use actual army equipment.

Which translates into another suit of combat armor. This one actually fits Pytor this time. He puts it on. You also grab the hem of it and then he starts.

"It's warm." He says.

You nod. "Yeah. They do that when they're near..." You gesture to yourself.

Pytor nods a thanks and the two of you get busy ripping the copper wiring out from the walls.

"Lena." He says suddenly.

"Hmm?" You ask.

"My mother's name was Lena." Pytor says. "She was about as big as me. She was a..." He shakes his head. "She tied my father by his balls to the back of the RV and drove it for ten miles." He nods. "Apparently he ran fast enough for the entire ten miles to keep everything. That was their wedding night, and probably the night I came into being."

"You mother had a weird sense of courtship." You say.

"You should have seen my thirteenth birthday." Pytor says.

"Pytor, I'm...I'm sorry about this craziness." You say.

He shrugs. "Life is."

Pytor nods.

It gets late. The two of you make a little sandwich lunch with the meat you've gotten from the confessors.

You've made a solid morning, and afternoon of dismantling the movie set. The place is gutted, and the RV is packed to the gills, has stuff strapped onto the roof, and has the working generator hitched to the back.

Genesis will shell out a lot of supplies for this. Honestly it'll be easy to get your way to East Gate, Citizen or not.

Pytor's doing his usual sweeps, making sure that he didn't miss anything. Also, you know he's thinking about if it would be safer to sleep here, or risk going through the canyon at night.

Right away, about six or seven bodies right at the door. Claw marks on the walls and actually in the metal of the other side of the door.

The rest of the room is just a study in improvisational slaughter. Stage lights, forks, knives, punch ladle, punch bowl, folding chair, folding table, deck of cards, poker chips, streamers, balloons, still wrapped gifts, and a decorative cactus. All of these items were used in the murder of one, or more, people.

"No, No! Shut the door! Keep them out! I'll be fine!" You shout as you chuck you arms out at the Critter.

"This thing gets free, it'll kill us in our sleep!"

Pytor slams the doors shut. You're both glad that Pytor trusts you, and a little naturally preturbed that someone could lock you in a room with a Feline without so much as a pause.

Still your cloud of ash flies through the air at the Critter.

You focus and your ash cloud solidifies around you.

The cat lets out a yowl and does a lunge at you, AND slashes with it's tails.

This time however, you've got enough focus to try to dodge it completely.

Then you see your knife crumble into a pile of ash, and the wound starts freely bleeding.

'You like?'

'Nice, but we're out a knife now.'

'Look in our hand.'

You look as you see your ash cloud coalesce around your hand and form a dark cloud when the smoke clears, you're holding your knife again.

'Nifty huh? Give us some time to work on that. We push a bit, we can get a LOT more than just that.'

The Feline tries to lash out at you with its tail again.

'WHAT?'

'Well, wet ash...kind of obvious, right?'

'So, our greatest trial will be going up against a kid with a water balloon?!'

You dodge in front of it spinning your foot out in a kick and you connect. Boy HOWDY to you connect. You FEEL your foot breaking the Feline's neck in mid-air, and if it wasn't dead already, the cat soars through the air at enough speed to smash into a standing metal pole and dent it.

The thing lands on the ground. Stone dead.

'Uhh...what's the upper limit on how hard we can kick something?' You ask as you look at the dead feline.

'Well, we wont be able to crack open the earth by stamping your foot.'

'Okay.'

'We might be able to leg press the RV, eventually.'

'Oh.' You go over to a wall partition that's made of wood and try a practice punch at it. It cracks, and it doesn't hurt, but your fist doesn't go through it. You try a light kick, and your leg goes through it like butter.

'Okay, why isn't our upper body getting like that?'

'Why did Ray's eyes start getting better when he began Accepting? Why is Pytor such a big mother-fucker? Why is our hair old-man, ash-fucking-ugly-grey?'

'It's not THAT bad.'

'Mmmph...anyway, luck of the draw. That's the reason. Go check out those Joys and see...'

You get close and actually see them. You then know who they are.

Joy-In-Brilliance, and Joy-In-Limelight. They're both long dead, and thankfully both gone.

Also, you can tell something else from their blonde hair, their noses, and chins. Not to mention Joy's confirming this information in your head.

These are Joy-In-Gold's daughters.

There's no violence on their bodies, and no signs of suicide. They're in their regalia. They just dropped dead where they stood.

You grab the corpse by the scruff of its broken neck and throw it over your shoulder.

'You think Gold will mind us skinning her babies' baby?'

'We don't really give a rats' ass what Gold thinks.'

You knock on the door. "Pytor, it's me."

Pytor opens the door and sees the dead feline.

"We're skinning it. A new seat cover for you in the RV." You say.

Pytor nods and takes the body. "Something to do for the evening. Anything of use in there?"

"Bodies, and if we wanted to strip copper wire out of the walls, we could. But not much, really."

Pytor grunts and goes back to his little makeshift camp on the 'battlefield.' He gets an empty bucket that's lying around and begins to gut the Feline. You blockade the door behind you, so the Felines don't get in.

"We'll be staying here for the night. Probably in the RV." Pytor says. "Then we head back and go to Genesis. Salome is the closest to here."

You wrinkle your nose. Most Genesis towns aren't so bad, but Salome is a town that's home to a couple of 'Advisory Councils,' which means their stick is larger and further up their ass than usual. Not as bad as "Genesis" (The Genesis town that's named 'Genesis') of course, but...enough to make you wrinkle your nose.

"Alright." You say.

"I don't care for them either, but they won't scalp us on all this scrap. We go to a settlement that's more relaxed, and we may get rooked." Pytor says as he continues to skin the Feline. "Dinner's on your own, food's in the RV."

Pytor looks quite calm and happy. He does enjoy doing things like this.

You grab some jerky and some kind of canned drink from the RV, and you make your way across the studio to the large Production Building.

You don't even need to hack the security doors, just a few button presses on the override box, and the doors come down. The entire place is slowly starting to light up again.

'So...I'm not 100% sure on how these Siphon things work. Something about emergency power?'

'The siphons work normally, but they work better if they get a charge.'

'So, the power chargers...need power...in order to charge power?'

'That's correct, but at the same time it's...not. Fuck, we barely understand it. We gave the system a kickstart, until it was capable of running on its own.'

'Okay. So...what's going to happen?'

'Probably it'll power as much as it can for as long as it can, and then the siphon will slowly shut down again, and if you aren't there to kick it back up, it'll wind down and we'll be back to where we were this morning.'

'Ah.'

'Maybe some heavier fallout as the siphon starts to misbehave.'

The building is professional, welcoming, and the secretary is dead in her chair.

'She died of thirst.'

'How can we tell?'

'She was a Small Joy. We get a random echo or two. She sat there for three days, and she died of thirst.'

'Well, good thing we've LONG since gotten over the 'weird dead body' thing.'

You use the key card and call the elevator. There's no question as to where you should go. Maybe tomorrow before you go, you'll search the building, but tonight, you need to do this first.

Top floor. The key card opens the doors, and behind the big door is the offices of Joy In Gold.

She is dead on her couch and she has no pants on.

The man you assume is from Cliffsea has jumped out of Gold's window, and was presumably one of the corpses you saw in the lobby.

'Is she?'

'Yep...just like West Wind. Also like West Wind, she's reaching out to us.'

'Alright...let's...think about this.'

'Or at least could withstand it...maybe.'

'Wouldn't West Wind fit that profile exactly?'

'Okay, we didn't know that until AFTER we had put her to rest. Also...we're kind of making this up as we go along. So we're going to make mistakes.'

'So West Wind was a mistake?'

'No. No...ugh. We're driving ourselves nuts.'

'We're already clinically nuts, it's why we're still sane. Remember?'

'Alright. Alright. Anyway, I don't want Gold in my head. End of argument.'

'Are we going to put her pants back on?'

'Eh, fuck it. We owe her for the damn lynx.'

It looks like Gold kept most of her data and notes on Screens or in Gadgets. Nothing.

You check Gold's discarded pants. She's put in a post-it-note inside her wallet.

"Call OLYMPUS about HESTIA. New 'season' = Higher 'Rent.' "

Well, you had a feeling that this was the case, but now its clear. Whatever HESTIA is, they made it here, and it was 'running' in OLYMPUS. And it has something to do with schoolgirls who can't act, and fake houses.

Oh, hey...you can see something from the windows outside. Pytor's flashing his flashlight on and off rapidly. Shit. Time to move!

You make your way down the building, outside, and back into the 'Triumphant' set.

"Get the door closed!" Pytor says.

A brief moment, and the blast door seals behind you.

"Fuck, the RV's still out there..." Pytor bites his lip. "Did you lock it?" He asks.

"I'm...not sure." You say.

"Shit...not your fault." Pytor says.

"Pytor, what's going on?" You ask.

“Security room.” Pyotr says.

You go to the room and see that the screens aren’t showing old footage anymore, these must be the cameras that are on the lot. The Siphon must have gotten them working too. But that’s not important. What is important is that there are three flatbed trucks that are driving up the studio trail and onto the studio lot. They’ve each got about six people riding in the back, with two or three more people in the cabin.

“Company.” Pyotr says.

“Genesis? Confessors?” You ask, hoping for a long shot.

“I wish. The look says salvagers, but my gut says that it’s something worse.” He says. “Can you get audio on this?”

You read the controls and flick a switch. By the time you get the audio working, the twenty five men and women have gotten off of the trucks and stand at attention around a man dressed in white robes.

“Spread out, brothers and sisters. Remember, High Father Plath wants the Demon alive. Anyone the beast has tainted can be smote from the Earth, but do NOT kill the Hellspawn!” The man wearing the white robes says. “Remember, our cause is Truth, our Faith is Pure, we are the ones who walk the Path to Paradise.”

“Blessed be the Righteous!” The group chants.

“And remember, if any of your brothers or sisters become so blessed to transcend…stay away from them, for in their revelry at their ascension, they may not be able to immediately see you in their euphoria.” The leader says. “I shall dispatch our Holy Messengers.” He goes to his truck, and takes out a thing that looks like an inside-out bug-zapper, connected to a battery. He turns it on and the thing starts glowing.

“Are those blurs on the TV screen what I think they are?” Pyotr asks.

You nod. That machine is either summoning, calling, or creating mosquito Eyeless to it. The robed man points at the Flock, standing with their eyes closed.

“Prepare to receive holy communion with Heaven itself!” The man says.

The Eyeless fly down, one to each person, and start to jab their proboscises into their host’s neck. After a moment, the process is done, and you see boils, and pus begin to drip from the people. It’s happening at a MUCH faster rate than the Genesis soldier did.

The mosquitos fly back to the bug zapper and the robed man snaps his fingers. “Go! Fly out and find her.” The Eyeless scatter. He looks at the twenty-five Hives. “Go. Remember, the girl is to be brought back ALIVE.”

The twenty-five people walk away, in perfect rhythmic unison. “He can control them?” Pyotr asks.

You shrug.

‘That really shouldn’t be possible.’

‘Are you saying that we didn’t see what we just saw?’

‘No…but…well…Hubris are just supposed to be parasites, byproducts of the Clean Energy spills. They’re not supposed to be organized, much less be able to follow orders!’

‘Learn something new every day, then.’

“Come on.” Pyotr says, as he gets up. “We have to get ready, they’re going to find us, or worse, wreck the RV.”

You follow Pytor, you hope he has a battle plan. Or at least one that goes beyond ‘shoot them, then hit them with my crowbar until they stop moving.’ You’ve got nothing wrong with that plan, but it seems to be slightly insufficient at the moment.

'Do WE have a plan?'

'Well...we probably aren't going to like it.'

'Joy, we're the same person. I already KNOW i don't like it!'

thanks for running

Let me guess; lure them into the locked studios, then lock them inside. Deal with whichever ones that we missed.
On the bright side, we found several working cars; those are worth quite a bit from what we've seen so far.

I wish we hadn't had to kill that Feline. It would be so awesome to be allied with the cats against these guys.

I don't think we're going to get a perfect chance like that. Something's got to give, and I'd prefer it not be a horrible person in our mind.

There's enough ambient clean energy that we're getting 25 Vainglories whether we detransform or not, I'm guessing.
