You are Alice Zief, Ars Magus Technician, and you just fired a destructive beam of energy at a pirate ship.

Well, actually that was a few hours ago.

Right now, you're serving as the radar operator for Shizune as the airship cruises almost silently through the night skies. It's a cloudless night, so this far away from civilization you're treated to something you haven't had the chance to admire before.

Stars.

Diamond pinpricks of light practically make the night glow, while the full moon hangs heavy and low in the sky. Below you, the clouds of seithr shift and flow like liquid silver, almost like a true ocean in the moonlight. But the hint of a memory nags at you there. For all that the sea of death covers the planet, a pale fragment of what the ocean would look like at night comes to mind. It wouldn't look like a silvery wave, but a million jet-black gems, constantly catching starlight, each glinting piece a treasure all it's own.

... But a memory like that is impossible.

The world has been covered by fog for nearly a hundred years. To see the nightsky from sealevel is something that just can't be done.

Still, it's a beautiful fragment of memory.

But enough getting lost in weird fantasies.

You're a little bored, and it's time you entertained yourself a little.

Excusing yourself for a moment, you move from the cockpit to the passenger cabin.

Tsubaki had a nap earlier today after you took off, but it's fairly late right now. She should be asleep. The lights are dimmed here, the pale moonlight coming through the window making up most of the illumination. A handful of indicators glow in the darkness, but apart from that it is nearly darker than your home during the day.

Checking your little girl, she seems to be asleep. The rhythm of her rising chest is a steady and slow beat, and the cool cabin air has resulted in you wrapping more than a few blankets around her, creating a cloth burrito thanks to your meticulous tucking.

You watch her for a few moments, just listening to the sound of her breathing in the cabin.

Asleep then. Fully and completely asleep. Not even a hint of stirring.

You smile, returning back to the cockpit and your improvised radar set-up.

"Mother...?" You don't even bother sighing, just going back to her place in the plane.

"Yes, Tsubaki?" You ask her, kneeling before her place in the crash-couch.

"Did you... Do you... " She struggles to find the words. You patiently wait, one hand going up to stroke her forehead reassuringly. "Do you know why we get nightmares?"

"We get nightmares because there are things that we are afraid of, Tsubaki. They remind us of the fears we contain and let us know that they are to be conquered."

"What did you see, Tsubaki? Tell me."

"We get nightmares because there are things that we are afraid of, Tsubaki. They remind us of the fears we have and let us know that they are to be conquered." You continue to stroke her face, cupping her cheek in one hand. You keep your voice quiet and gentle, never going beyond a whisper in the cabin.

"What did you see, Tsubaki? Go on, you can tell me."

The girl bites her lip, golden eyes bright and wide in the darkness. She doesn't say anything, simply staring at you, teeth working away at her lip. Very patiently, you wait for her to say something, refusing to leave until you've at least heard SOMETHING come out of her mouth.

Finally, after what your connection to Al-Azif recognizes as twelve minutes and eighteen seconds, she speaks.

"I dreamed... you left me behind. And some scary men took me back to my father. And he..." She trails off, eyes wide and vulnerable. "He... he..."

You wrap your arms around her as she starts to sob, loud and wet cries practically deafening in the quiet room.

And during it all, you just hold her close as she cries, gently kneading circles in her back with your hand.

>Hold her until she goes back to sleep.
>Distraction! Come up with a distraction!
>Tell her not to cry and give her some reassurances. A mother won't leave her daughter behind so easily.

Blazblue is amazing.

It's all the ridiculous complexity of a fighting game plot, combined with an anime, a couple of novels, a manga, and a VN or two.

After a certain point, you just sort of think that you've gone past the impossible and while each new installment answers a few questions, they have to insert two more issues for every one thing that gets resolved.

It's still a crazy fun ride, though.

You chuckle quietly, holding your little baby tighter.

"There there, don't cry now." You say, clutching her close. "This is me we're talking about, remember? If a pair of literal minded girls revived a zombie, then why would that mean I leave you behind."

You squeeze a little.

"Besides..." You give Tsubaki a little wink. "A mother won't give up her kids so easily. Even if one got left behind, she'd definitely look for them with all her life."

With these a few other reassurances, you manage to lull her back to sleep.

Which leaves you alone with the pilot...

Well, I've spent most of the last few hours wrapped around the toilet. I've already got a doctors appointment in around three hours, so that's convenient at least.

I'm actually really pissed at the failing of my weak human body right now. This is getting real annoying, and I'm betting you guys don't like it either when I have to cut and run.

Phantom Genesis to resume next week, same time, same place. I'm gonna prepare something over the next few days that'll hopefully let us get through more plot next time...
