Alright, we, /tg/, have made 3' (4?) insect/bug races. The problem is, they aren't finished. Well, the Mothfolk are pretty much done, but the other 2 bug races, the Miga/Flies and the Hirudo/Leeches, aren't done, and it would be pretty neat to see them finished.
So let's finish them. Also if you want to make a setting where they all exist together or some shit, you can do that too I guess.

Some stuff that still needs to be answered
Miga
>What the fuck are dragonflies?
>What the fuck are butterflies?
>What caused the schism between Dormants and the Nomads in the first place?
>What happens to the monstrosities that are created from abandoned eggs?
>What are some of their allies and enemies?

Hirudo
>What the fuck is their religion?
>What are some of their allies and enemies?
>How is their leader selected?

Etc.

If it helps, one of the ideas for the Hirudo god was for it to become a minor god of medicine and medical professionals after it sucked the blood of the dying god who was previously the minor god of medicine and medical professionals.
>>
>>39696965
Making up any other name would work better. The other god's name is fantastic. It's one thing to take inspiration from a name in the way it sounds, like if you named him Bebulza or Balshazar or whatever. Just straight up calling him Beelzebub is absolutely boring. Especially if he's also blatantly just "The Other" of the religion. He can embody some negative and aggressive traits that should be feared, but those still have their purposes in other aspects of life, and the idea of having a God who is your more benevolent god's Lover be reviled is kind of silly.

Your wiki is all moderately neat and original stuff and then a groan inducing dark god.

It's been a while since I've seen one of these.
I still have a bunch of art from the Leechfolk thread.
>>
>>39696431
For an ally/enemy for the leeches I was thinking of vampires.

Leeches bottle up and store blood, vampires drink blood. You could have some interesting interplay. Vampires going to leeches rather than draining people at night, but vampirism could be spread to leeches... a vampire could taint an entire CASK of blood and any leech that drinks from it runs the risk of getting fucked up somehow.
>>
>>39697323
I wasn't really here for that thread but they're direct contenders for sweet sweet blood. Wouldn't that be enough cause for them to hate each other with a passion over time?

I think they should just be largely independent individuals who are fucking terrifying
>>
>>39696431

Miga and Hirudo might be neutral to okay with one another, solidarity among outcasts perhaps. But even the Miga might be generally afraid of Leechfolk territory, they herd giant super toads for their blood, and those supertoads gotta eat something (same might apply to moths)

What about other homebrew races that we made? Like the Pangolin people? There was some talk in the previous thread about maybe substituting them for the dwarves in the Mothfolk lore. Maybe Leeches are absolute BROS with Pangolin? They're a race that isn't readily blood suckable through their armor, thus sort of forces them to attempt other ways of trade.

>I think they should just be largely independent individuals who are fucking terrifying
Leeches or Vampires?
I'm gonna go off the assumption you're talking about vampires which would make for some neat parallels/interplays. Hirudo take care to Farm their blood typically, vampires are basically either bums or theives that steal it from them, or from other races, and just give bloodsuckers a poor name.

They'd be basically Hirudo "Wasters" from a different race. And becoming a vampire might be something a waster could aspire to be, take all their poor habits and legitimize them with immortality.
>>
>>39697188
Alright there you go
Actual criticism
Anyways, I think you're right about the name, having it take inspiration from Beelzebub, but not actually being Beelzebub
And for the god's function/domain, what would you suggest? There's plenty of "The Other" in various religions, such as the Devil in Christian/Catholic, or Nerull in D&D.
I think one god representing "good" scavenging and the other "bad" scavenging works kinda well, since the original one, The Great Maggot, emphasizes both traits of scavenging.
The lover bit maybe can be handled a bit better, but we'd still need an origin for Muga, who's basically Fly-Jesus.

If you wanna play with the dualism you can maybe make one "Great White eyes" and "Old Red Eyes"

Could be neat for aesthetic and could tie the certain genetic trait into some aspects of culture.
>>
>>39696965
Semi-related, but I believe a suggestion for Hirudo priests was for them to be more doctor-like than priest-like, and for their clients to pay in literal blood money to satisfy both parties. The patients of their health, and the doctors of their nourishment. Plus living in the swamps allows for various drugs, antibodies, and other medicine to be made more easily.
>>
>>39697675
Hirudo would also be awesome financiers from what I understand. Or rather, it be cheap to travel through their territory or buy stuff from them. They don't value gold, they value blood, and blood is something one can recover with the help of some cookies and oranges and a good night or so rest. It be neat to consider what role they'd fill economically in a world with Pangolin, Mothfolk, Miga, and Beeple.
>>
>>39697638
The eye color thing is neat, especially since all white-eyed flies are male. Perhaps white-eyes are considered "holier" than red-eyes, and since white-eyes only occur in males, Muga can only be a male. Opens up some interesting civil-rights issues that can happen, such as lower-class reds and higher-class whites. A female getting white-eyes can also be considered to be the holiest, and automatically becomes the next Muga.

And as for Belshazar, good name by the way, semi-Lucifer/Fall from Heaven event can occur in mythology.
Basically, the Great Maggot splits into the two gods, they give birth to Muga, Muga converts a troubled civilization to flies, when Belshazar gets too power hungry or some shit and falls. Now in the present, the Cult of Belshazar/the Thugee try to enact his revenge.
>>
>>39697992
Plus there'd probably be free healthcare, so some people may move there. Then again, it's a swamp.

>>39698127
Oh I forgot, the reason white-eyed females would be automatically the next Muga, is because she would most resemble Myiagra, due to being bith female and white-eyed, instead of just white-eyed.
>>
>>39697546
But in those religions the Other is usually not an equal. Thor always kicks Loki's ass after his shenanigans. The Devil has to obey a direct order from Jebus. Horus' sperm always ends up in Set's butt by the end of the contests.

The female and male fly gods act like equals, they're siblings, and ones a mighty war god who gave victory and power over their enemies in dire times. Even if he is an asshole who demands a high price I would defiantly worship the crap out of him if I was in their shoes

Personally I'd just have the Muga burst out of whatever Terrasque's corpse the Great Maggot was chilling in like a chestburster with god like messianic powers with all the other folks totally losing it over how awesome he is. The Great Maggot's gender was unknown but both of the new Migi Gods took credit for his birth. Miyagi claiming she carried the egg for years upon years, putting all her strength into the holy child in a labor of love and Balshazar claiming he inseminated the Great Maggot's corpse so his champion could come forth.

No ones know which is which because The Muga had both Red and White eyes.
>>
>>39698377
I see where your getting at, but I have to disagree. Myiagra represents scavenging and renewal, taking what is dead or dying, or left behind, and creating something new. Belshazar/Beelzebub represents parasitism and decay, taking and taking until whatever your taking is all used up, but not creating with it and instead using it for personal gain, such as to gain great strength. Both represent scavenging in a certain way, which is ultimately what a fly does, scavenge, since it's a scavenger, buy Belshazar/Beelzebub's way is ultimately more wasteful, and generally evil. The Great Maggot emphasizes both qualities, being a parasite, but on a dead being, and is also trying to create something, metamorphosis.

Well isn't it in the case of the Miga that their two gods are perhaps Both the other, at least compared to "The Great Maggot"
>>
>>39698952
If Balshazar is the Parasite god what is he feeding off of or does he also encompass blood suckers and biters? The Great Maggot also doesn't make much sense, you can't be a parasite for a dead creature, either he's feeding on a corpse, which makes him Myiagra or he's feeding on a living thing which would make him Balshazar
>>
>>39699494
Well He's the precursor, he's greater then both. Myiagra is noticeably more benevolent it seems, which makes it harder for her to be the Other in any scenario

Actually one of things a devout member of the Thuggee/Cult of Belshazar can do is become a mosquito, sice mosquitos are both parasites and semi-related to flies.

I got shit for the Great Maggot though. Perhaps the being it was feeding on was undead, being both alive and dead at the same time.
>>
>>39699775
I honestly don't see how Belshazar isn't the more worshiped one. Fuck up whoever you want and take their blood for yourself seems like a much more conducive plan to go with for a short lived fly species with a rapidly increasing population and nothing to lose, since I'm pretty sure they're all about some form of reincarnation.

Again he might mandate something kind of dire from the people in question, and he wasn't the one that gave the Miga wings to escape their enemies, that was Myiagra.

Myiagra gives gifts and expects nothing much in return. Belshazar is classical devil, he gives you talent and power, like superb disco dancing, but expects a dire price to be paid back, Like i dunno, losing your rythym? I'll be honest I just wanted an excuse to post this pic.

Since I feel like we're just gonna be talking in circles about Belshazar and Myiagra, let's move on to a different topic.
Dragonflies and Butterflies.

For Dragonflies, a suggestion was for them to be abandoned Nomad Miga eggs in a river, taken in by a Chinese Dragon-esque river god. Basically underwater monks that train for hundreds of years, go out into the world for about 15 years, and then die. Extremely fucking fast because of training with water resistance all their life, and being pretty cool Not!Asian paladins.

For Butterflies, we got jack-shit except a connection to the Mothfolk in some way.
So let's work on them a bit.
What should their relations to regular Miga be?
Weaponry?
Religion?

>Extremely fucking fast because of training with water resistance

>>
>>39700520
Well Mothfolk have the tradition of Necrosavants right? Maybe Butterflies are essentially highly skilled wizards as trained by Mothfolk.
>>
>>39700520
Perhaps either the sun god of Mothfolk lore, or a haughty dawn god that's related to the Mothfolk goddess of dusk, created the Butterflies from the Miga, like Dragonflies and the Chinese Dragon river god, to one up Cirme.
They have more colorful wings than the Moths, are in general more haughty, etc.
Reflecting various aspects of the sun/dawn god.

Oh wow thats kind of neat and a happy coincidence. But it does lead me to another question.

Should these races exist on their own? In a sort of No Humans Allowed bugiverse? or should we work on a homebrew setting about these various races.

In the leechfolk thread a while back we were making deliberations about IF we did a Homebrew Only setting, what would replace the role of Dwarves in the Mothfolk lore, and we came to conclude Pangolin would be their racial enemy, if by accident. They blame Pangolin for dire termites ravaging their homelands, and such.

Frankly i'd like to see more interactions between Mothfolk, Hirudo, and Miga.
>>
>>39701297
Nah, humans should exist. Dwarves, Halflings, and Elfs as well. Maybe orcs too. But that's it, no other humanoids, everything else is bugs.
>>
>>39701488
Forgot to add "And other hombrew races as well."
>>
>>39701488
Well we'd might need to figure out a way to make them cohesive with the world then. Humans i can get behind, humans in fantasy tend to be generic race du jour. But what about Dwarves? what role do they play outside of antagonizing Mothfolk? How could they be different? What if Dwarves are a weird hivemind of dimunitive sociopaths that get posessed of urges to throw tantrums and cobble together murder machines. You know, Dwarf Fortress Dwarves.

Ay, while looking at the old threads, I found something interesting for the Miga

>"As it is known, my people, the Miga, are highly resistant to filth and decay. Due to the gifts of Myiagra (or Beelzebub, depending on which Miga you ask), we are completely immune to diseases. We may spend our entire lives in filth that would kill a human in mintues. Due to this, some humans get the idea in their heads for us to be sanitation workers, to clean their filthy sewers. We have discovered a more...dignified use of our gift."
>"Due to our aptitude, some wizards in various Arcane Colleges employ us Miga to do field research in the way of decay. Not necromancy, mind you, but simply studying the dead. It was through this research that one Miga, Darassa Corpse-Flower, discovered Cadaverine, an essence secreted by the dead when they decay. The chemical was already powerful and foul smelling enough, but, with help from his Colleges' top alchemists, Darassa was able to concentrate the Cadaverine into Qatil, a substance so foul-smelling and virile it could be used as a weapon.
>"After this discovery, there was an expanse of research by Humans and other races to control and weaponize Qatil. However, even through months of research, the Humans could not harvest Cadaverine and refine it effectively-it was too dangerous. Something did come out of this research, however- the 'Putrescence Filter,' or 'gasmask."
(1/2)
>>
>>39702000
>"As other races could not control it, Miga were given a full monopoly on Qatil. Cities controlled by Miga, or with a high Miga population (though these are few and far between) began building the Corpse Wells. These large, open expanses of factory were built below the cities. Dead animals were thrown down chutes into the Wells as a form of disposal, and, while decaying, the bodies could be harvested of Cadaverine. It would then be transported to small alchemy labs in another section of the facility where it could be distilled into Qatil."
>"Those Miga who wish to make a fair sum for their families, or those Miga who are skilled in the Alchemical arts, often flock to the Corpse Wells to make a living. It is miserable work, but pays well, as few can do this job. These Miga, known as Extractors and Brewers, respectively. Extractors harvest Cadaverine from the corpses by plunging the Essence Extractor, a large needle, into the body and taking the esscense. When their needles are full, they send their glass tube of liquid to the Brewers labs. Brewers, carefully working as to not cause an explosion or outbreak of Qatil Gas (which has happened before, to disastrous results). Once the Qatil is distilled, it is stored in Iron Barrels, which are held until they are needed."

>"In times of War, these Barrels are sent out to Outposts and Military Camps, where the Qatil is transferred (carefully) to small glass flasks. The flasks are issued to Miga Drop Troops, known also as "Plagueboys." In battle, the Miga fly over enemy lines, dropping the flasks on enemy troops. The ensuing chaos caused by the horrid smell usually breaks up enemy lines, allowing Miga Pike Troopers to enter the line (as non- Miga troops cannot handle Plagued areas.)
>Some have debated the use of Qatil as a weapon, as there have been some results indicating infection and death as a result of exposure. This debate rages on."

Wait this could work
Meratsu, seeing the sunstruck Mothfolk, loved them, but seeing as the Mothfolk were Cirme's, he couldn't do shit for them. So he took some abandoned Miga eggs, and just as the Chinese Dragon god did, changed them. He basically made them into sunstruck Mothfolk, but turned up to 11, and WAY more colorful and fanciful. Also immune to blindness, and when they use photosynthesis, the energy actually comes from the sun.
Feverent artists, musicians, priests, and everything else, including battle and magic. Less of a focus on alchemy though.
>>
>>39703998
I wonder if Butterflyfolk would be over reliant on their god then. They pretty much were "made" because Meratsu was lovey dovey for the sunstruck. I don't think they'd live in the desert like the Sunstruck Mothfolk either, perhaps in verdant highlands or tropical jungles. Perhaps as a sort of border between the Ancestral Mothfolk forests and Leechfolk bloodswamps.

Well if we're developing an insect pantheon here then I'm sure the gods would mess with each others races.
Then would could simplify the gods into concepts like
>The Swarm
>The Parasite
>The Hunter
It might be interesting to have a Triune God group, and like in Hinduism, create more specific gods as aspects/incarnations of one of those three.
From a Parasite God, you could have a Disease Goddess (Mosquito/Flea), a Thief God (Robber Fly) and a God of Greed (Tick/Leech)
The Patron god of the Hirudo could be this specific Divine version of the Parasite god. The three original gods would be worshiped among all the bugfolk, but each race would have a few specific gods that either created them or had a major influence on their culture.
It would be like they all have the same Holy Book, but each race has their favorite characters. The characters of the book are the various Insect Gods and their adventures and teachings.
If you tell me a bit more about the Miga and Mothfolk (needs a better name) Gods, I might be able to rejigger their myths into a cohesive unit.

Flys and Moths are pretty similar, at least as far as arachnids and annelids go.

I kind of think we should have Crane Fly, Butterfly and Dragonfly types be as large as 7 feet tall, but the other miga should be about 3-4 ft tall. Swarms of human-sized flies just seems a bit too much.
4-5 feet or even 6 is a pretty good size for mothfolk though
>>39704837
Ok that's alright. Although I would also counter that religion gets rewritten all the time. What are the basic concepts behind the mothfolk gods and goddesses? I might be able to spin them as aspects of a trio of gods.

what do you think about the vampire idea for Hiduro.

I mean the one where hiduro are not sentient as a species they are just big leeches.
But if someoen turn them into a vampire they become sentient adn form the actual Hirudo society.

You have Adults: most of the population. Unaging vampires they do all the workbut can't reproduce (only turn youngsters)

Young ones, The race of leeches breed by the vampiric adults to be tuned into a full member of society.

A youngster usualy make a child or two before being turned into a vmapire.

What do yo uthink?

at least it will make them not another boring animal race.
>>
>>39706300
I'm fine with that.

Also, I'm guessing their race would be subject to raids from vampires of other races. They have lots of blood, vampires want that blood, most aren't very diplomatic and won't trade for it, ect...
So I think they'd dislike 'foreign' vampires, ironically viewing them as parasites.

There might be some exceptions though. Vampire lords who don't want to attract unwanted attention for their sustenance and set up trade contracts as to obtain blood without adventurers busting down their doors. Or a band of vampires that moved into a town and integrated with the leech society, sometimes contributing their own unique knowledge for obtaining, refining, ect...

Just a thought.

Ah Dragonflies. More anicent then any other races. They were around when Dinosaurous walked the earth. They were around to slay the great wyrms and dragons. Their body clad in an indistructible amror. They walk this world alone, each following his a mission known to few.
They are paladins, they are hunters of the mosnters, and in the end There Can Be Only One.

>She blew day and night with all five of her mouthes to melt and shape the body plates.
>The resulting carapce were gifted to the the Dragonflies of the day.
>The dragonflies accepted the gift and wore it joyfully. It was able to protect them from the fire and acids and all others children of Tiamat were able to breath.
>But Tiamat didn't make this gift knowing it will help slaughter her children, for indeed at that time Dragonflies hunted even old Dragons.
>The armor wasn't there to protect the waerer from the Elements but to protect the world from what is inside that armor.
>For the armor grew into the bodies of the Dragonflies and passed to every new dragonfly that is born.

ok let's start with requests.

If you really have time have him speaking with a Mothfolk noble near some sort of gate.

>>39696431
I remember some:

The dragonflies are born from Miga eggs adopted by a water spirit/ oriental dragon. They were samurai/monks/paladins, can't remember where they settled, but I remember they fought for Good.

I think butterflies had some link to do with mothkin, too.
>>
>>39704926
Eh
Some wanted the flies to be tall and skinny, others wanted them to be short and fat, so we compromised and made the Dormants short and the Nomads tall, I think it works.

And as for the Hinduism idea, I like it, but I don't feel like it can be used for all of the races. Like the Water Dragon god of the Dragonflies, that doesn't really fit into any of the themes, except maybe hunter, but it's a little bit of a stretch. Maybe some other races.
>>
If he have the God of Swarm, and non eof our race is the boring swarm, the said god would end up representing familyvalues and sticking together to work for a community.
he is the father god (Odin/osiris)
parasite is the trickster god (Loki/set)
Hunter (Hunger) is the warrior god (Thor Ra)
>>
>>39708313
Osiris was more along the line of Hades than Odin, while Ra was the chief deity. As for a warrior god, I think Horus may fit better.
>>
>>39701297
Other notable races developed by /tg/ include:
The Chorus, magnetic sentient spheres
Vinefolk, sentient plants that use armor or animal bone as their bones
Melek Taus, not a race but a culture of psionic peacocklike poofters

That's it so far off the top of my head - well, one more, that is the crustacean water dwellers that have like, 4 castes of differing physiology depending on where they live.

Their young though we did have the idea for them to be feral little critters that live in big communal pools like Mind-Flayer tadpoles. They get big enough and ignore the bloodsausage and bloodcake used to feed them so they start turning to cannibalism which triggers their development into a full-blown Hirudo adult

IIRC the Hirudo had minor psionic abilities when attached to a host due to the brain in each of its segments, plus they farm giant toads for blood as well as for battle sometimes, using a form of telepathy to control the toad whilst attached to the inside of the giant toad's mouth
>>
>>39709391
>Attached to the inisde of the giant toad's mouth
That doesn't sound like a very good idea for a bug

>>39709223
What's your favorite bug?
>>
>>39709391
IIRC you are correct.

They had psionists ( can't remember if that required a host or not) and they have sonic abilities since their whole body can be used as an inflatable lung.

Sonic-blasts, super-powerful blowguns, throat-singing

Toads were said to be lazy and would prefer to sit in one spot long enough that moss and plants would grow on them, disguising the giant amphibians in the swamps as either logs or ancient statues. Implied to be partially photosynthetic. They would stand sentry, snapping up anything non-Hirudo that came by but could be motivated into movement and battle by a Hirudo controlling it
>>
>>39709452
>Attached to the inisde of the giant toad's mouth
>That doesn't sound like a very good idea for a bug
There's actually a type of bug called the Frog Eater because it parasitizes frogs and even if the frog gets the jump on it the bug will actually crawl out of the frogs mouth to suck their blood right under their chin. They're actually killing off a LOT of frogs and toads and freaking out biologist, I'm talking they have a %100 survival rate when faced with frogs and toads
>>
>>39709460
Don't forget they angered the toads into rampaging across enemy lines too
And I don't think they were lazy, they had problems with their musculature or something similar due to being so big, which could cause problems if caused to rampage repeatedly, greatly harming them.

>leeches with arms
seriously no

they should primarily use their extremely dexterous mouths and bodies to manipulate objects.
they have weak eyesight but an extremely powerful sense of smell, to the point they can "smell" what blood type or the health of a creature/blood to avoid infected or otherwise putrid blood.

because of their powerful smells you shouldn't expect the4ir society to be the same as humans who are sight based primarily (with decent hearing as well)

the leeches primary senses are smell and taste so their arts and culture should be appropriate for that.
the greatest leech artists spend years creating new incenses and other smells. the greatest works of art are housed in great olfactoriums where thousands of leeches gather to smell the incredible and deep mix of aromas.
upper class leeches especially like to carry around small cases full of their favorite incense.
taste as well is a big deal, master leech chefs toil endlessly to create new delights within the medium of blood and flesh, mixing spices, incense, herbs and other things to make what would otherwise be a simple meal into a total delight of taste and smell.
Leeches do eat meat but prefer blood since it is the very essence of life and the purest form of nourishment. they make a kind of "bloodwine" as well which is extremely popular and only taken from the finest most delicately raised animal stocks to be fermented.
they like to live in moist environments of course and their homeland is mostly made up of swampy-jungle area, their own buildings being made of mud brick hardened by their special saliva so that the rain and water does not destroy them.
the wealthiest leeches have stone or otherwise finely plastered brick homes and their own private wallowing pools to moist themselves in.
saunas are another popular leech tradition as are public baths.
all classes gather at the pools to relax, the air always filled with different tones of incense wafting through the air akin to music
>>
>>39710154
How do you propose they build houses, pools, saunas, prepare food, etcetera, without hands or arms
>>
>>39710154
Too late now to prevent them from having arms
>>
What the fuck do moths even eat?
>>
>>39710154
I do love the idea of incense and music being a very important part of their culture.

>>39710292
I figured Fruit or something they could drain the juices of with their proboscis. Can't remember if they have mouthparts or not.
>>
>>39710314
>>39710292
They eat lots of soup
>>
>>39710154
I continue to say they have mouthes at the end of their hands (no fingers).
and use those mouthes to manipulate objects (like dogs)
>>
>>39710154
there are tribes of nomadic leeches who still stick with their old hunting traditions, either stalking their prey to latch on and drain them right there, or dragging them back to their slave pens to be drained latter in large blood-pits.

the civilized leeches are more refined, they have specially bred animal stocks of all different sorts which are all kept supremely healthy and "pure of blood" for their taste, leech farmers will often take a little 'sip' from their stocks just to see how they are coming along.

though they have a heavy focus on blood they are not warlike and despise the idea of shedding blood so wastefully. in battle they focus on blunt weaponry like cudgels, and nets so as to take their enemy prisoner rather than kill him outright.
They are not cruel either, at least not needlessly so, they have grand rituals of offering blood to their God, since he gave his own blood to create them in his image but in doing so drained himself so much that both he and his children require blood constantly in order to survive. So they collect blood for him as to sustain him and receive his blessings, this usually takes the form of a great gathering where every leech is expected to give a tithe of blood into a great pit, then one leech acting as "avatar of the great God" then must consume the entire pit himself, inevitably until death by over-consumption.

if the Avatar cannot finish the blood pool its a terrible omen for the year to come, if he finishes it however and bursts from the pressure that's also a bad sign as it shows the God was displeased with the offering.

For my money, I like my insectfolk to be huge and disgusting like the pic I'm replying to.

I once toke part of a thread where every dubs was "a sentient race in your campaign", to which I still adhere to zealously.

One of these was Beegirls.
Now my setting's main themes are a. Religious zealotism and b. Body Horror Bloodborne? so IF I where going to have a fucking beegirl race in my setting they better be huge, multi-limbed, salivating-corrosive-acid behemoths that raid settlements and capture helpless humanoids to feast on they like dorfs and goliath because of their crunchy skin

So yes they are not entirely bees, just the best and creepiest traits of insects thrown together to make something truly horrific and awesome
>>

It doesn't make sense
>>
>>39709559

I do love the idea of undead insect/arthropodal races.

The Miga have the Hollows, Liches that are literally nothing more than the hollow exoskeletons of the Miga holding nothing more than dust and shadows or burial stuffings.
>>
>>39710583
I was just talking about culture-religion specifics

for leadership I like some quasi-divine GodKing type deal, specifically bred from spawning to enjoy the absolute finest things in life, have the best taste in incense and in food, to be a great artist as well as philosopher. basically to be supreme in all matters.

they spend most of their lives in a Royal Harem with other high royals awaiting their turn to become King.
the thing is the Kingship only lasts one year as the King must always take his role as Avatar of the God for the yearly blood festival and consume the blood pool unto his own death.

after which if he does indeed drink the entire pool without exploding he is slowly drained and the blood is given out to all the citizens so that they may gain a small portion of his wisdom, that way he aids in uplifting the entire race.

the ceremony is presided over by the next Crown Prince, chosen specifically by the last king from one of the many harem princes to rule after him.

after the old King's death the new king becomes the first to drink the blood of the old one and then assumes his place as King until the next year. the difference here is these prices train their whole lives to be able to access the 'blood memory' of others, meaning that in a way the knowledge of the last King is carried over to the next as an unbroken line.

leech kings however enjoy extreme opulence and delight in all manner of things during their short reign, and many Leech kings have produced some of the greatest works of their civilization.
>>
>>39710583
we really need to move our asses and create a good wiki page for each of those.

Hold on, I think I have a summary of the Hirudo.

The Hirudo, just like the Miga/Flyfolk and Mothfolk, are a bug race created by /tg/, the bug this time being leeches.

Before I go further, I should mention that most of this is what is the most accepted version, therefore the most "canon" version.

The Hirudo/Leechfolk aren't spooky scary worm vampires, as some might expect, but rather uncivilized swamp tribesmen who have recently become civilized through some means. The Hirudo, while having a craving and a necessity for blood, don't harvest it from humans and other such beings, (Although if you want some medical help from a Hirudo doctor, you best believe you're paying in literal blood money) but from giant toads and swamp boars, bred specifically for the reason of blood harvesting, as seen in this picture. There's always exceptions to the rule of course, with the above mentioned blood money, and so-called "Wasters", which are wild and barbaric Hirudo who have fully given into their bloodlust, attacking anybody anything with blood, gorging themselves until their full, only for the process to repeat again.

With the Hirudo being a fairly minor race, not exactly the prettiest in terms of looks, and some social stigma from the aforementioned blood drinking, warfare is not a common occurrence with the Hirudo, where they would find few allies, and many enemies. Although if warfare should occur, weapons such as saw-toothed clubs and large blowguns covered in the anticoagulant spit of a leech to bleed out enemies and making them easier to identify, are used, along with natural sound/sonic based attacks through both natural ability and the use of giant toads, who can be also used as stampeding beasts by enraging them, although this causes great harm to the giant toads, and using their swamplands to a large advantage. Salt, blood-depravation, and non-humid areas are MAJOR weaknesses however.

1/2
>>
>>39711234
Religion hasn't really been discussed yet, but a general idea for the Hirudo god, who we still do not have a name yet for, is to be a leech who sucked the blood of the dying, or not dying, minor god of medicine and medical professionals, which in turn causes the leech to become the minor god of medicine and medical professionals. This also causes the priests and clerics to not be healers through prayer, but actual doctors with extremely potent medicines made from various fauna in the swamps. They also super-crazy drugs to use against enemies.

And as for magic, the idea is that the Hirudo to drink the blood of magical creatures/beings and mages, and get magical powers equal to theirs.

That's pretty much it for the Hirudo so far.
>>
>>39711234
>>39711312
Seems to be the general facts of them. I'll set up a page later tonight after I'm done running my game
>>
>>39711234
Idea though about the Hirudos god of medicine and the Miga's god.

The Miga gods Myiagra and Belshazar(beelzebub) arose from the Great Maggot Muga. Muga feasted on the corpse of a god and rose to dietyhood to represent the cycle of death, decay and renewal. Muga matures and starts to metamorphose into a new form but was injured while pupating or the injury was what caused the metamorphosis. From the injured husk emerged not one but two beings, the gods Myiagra and Belshazar. At first they were both benign sibling gods until something corrupts Belshazar and the schism happens between them.

Perhaps the same Corpse God that the Muga feasted on was the same as the one the Hirudos god feasted on to absorb the role of god of medicine and medical professionals.

Maybe it was some God of Life and Healing struck down by another.
>>
>>39712266
That's a good idea, I like it, intertwining the mythologies.
Also the Great Maggot isn't Muga. Muga is Fly-Jesus, who gave the gift of Myiagra to a troubled civilization. The Great Maggot is the proto-god of the Miga and progenitor of Myiagra and Belshazar.
>>
>>39712634
Ah gotcha.

Yeah I thought Muga was fly-Jesus but also that he was the reincarnation of the Great Maggot

>>
>>39712683
I bet some Miga would think that, like how some consider Jesus to be both of God, but also a form of God himself.

Also I think I came up for a reason for the schism between Nomads and Dormants. Original Nomadic Miga, probably being hunters in old Miga society due to their increased height, didn't like how Miga decided to stop and set up a city, instead of being a nomadic civilization. "Muga and Myiagra gave us wings to fly", or some similar reason, and the "leader" of the original Nomads decides to leave and become the travelling hobos they are today.
>>
>>39711312
For name ideas we can go with some play on Ascelpius or Caduceus, Greek God of Medicine and Snake Stick Representing Medicine respectively.

>>39712266
Maybe if we intertwine the mythologies maybe the god the Great Maggot and Cadespius Leech God feed on was more a god of "Life" in general. Great Maggot representing "Life's End" and "Cycle of Rebirth" where as Great Leech comes to represent the maintenance and healing of life.
Shooting the wind at this point really.

Anyways, a bit more back on topic, how would Butterfly society work? With everybody being basically on crack and/or cocaine, and Meratsu being pretty much number one, two, AND three, how would it work? Would there be a lot if crusades, trying to "purge" heretics? Or would there not be, tolerating the "heretics", because they only believe in other gods due to their ignorance?
One thing I think they would also be obsessed with is beauty, considering butterflies are often considered prettier than moths, and the sun is also considered a thing of beauty.

>>
>>39727657
Well, grasshopper-folk tend to be well-received as musicians. (If they exist. If not, maybe wandering bards get called grasshoppers?)

Alternative forms of performance: We know moths tend to be attracted to lights; maybe have light exposure/concealment as the basis for an art form? (For example, think of a bunch of moths covering/uncovering lanterns to show images and patterns, flickering between intended designs as they go - maybe with background music; not quite a movie or dance, but something between)?

Random, associated idea - bars and inns tend to be well-lit at night.

I got something that's kinda related

Dormant Miga Army
>SO MANY SOLDIERS
>SO MANY
>Soldiers are pretty fast
>Almost always a numbers advantage
>Lots of pike men at the front, swarm and overwhelm the enemy from a distance
>Sharpshooters with powerful crossbows posted near the back and at key positions, also functions as anti-air defense and taking out persons of importance
>A few war machines such as ballistae, and a couple anti-air weapons
>Skirmishers in the sky to protect bombers and air superiority
>Bombers dropping heavy rocks and poisonous/nasty Qatil to disrupt enemy lines
>Dropping corpses and such into enemy lines and towns, spreading diseases by just being near people, biological warfare in general
>Prisoners with clipped wings forced to fight are the only actual ground units besides the war machines
>80% of the army can fly
>Flank attacks galore

>Few mages, learning magic is hard when you only live 8-13 years, and few places to learn it, such as your Ancestry Book if one of your ancestors was a mage
>Undisciplined as fuck
>Very few to none war veterans, soldiers are almost always newbies
>Very few to none heavy units, armor is usually patchwork leather from various corpses instead
>Soldiers on average are a bit weaker than others
>Everybody has an obsessive cleanliness issue, can sometimes be a detriment
>Not many allies due to being ugly-ass giant flies, also they could a shitton of diseases just being near Miga
>No calvary, but that's not really am issue because everybody's pretty fast, except the war machines
>>
>>39728008

Sounds good. I think that with flight and overall, speed, a Miga army would be at an advantage by being able to set the terms of the battle.

I guess a smart enemy would make fires, so the smoke rises up and disorients the miga.
>>
>>39727745
Wasn't there some art form that was basically glorified shadow puppets in Ancient Japan? That could provide an interesting basis for an art form.
>>
>>39728008
But flies are actually very clean, constantly washing their hands. They wouldn't spread plagues.
I think they mostly see the usefulness of filth, as in it's food and they can use it, but otherwise cleanse their bodies more often than other races would.

I also speculate their culinary arts may be non-existent. Can they even taste anything besides 'edible' and 'sweet'?
>>

>Hit-and-run tactics
>Skilled naturalists, can live off, and be stealthy on, the land easily
>Base can move easily and at any time
>Bros with the Drakiga, can get their help more often than Dormants
>All of the army can fly
>Great fliers too
>Few discipline problems, due to a combination of semi-rough upbringings, and a general idea of, "We're all gonna die someday, why prolong it?"
>Each leader/chief of a caravan has a powerful holy weapon, a Bow of Myiagra, which is a very large, very blessed, greatbow
>Effective scavengers, will find and use almost everything
>Also immune to diseases

>Also few mages
>Resource dependent on scavenging, and what's in the area around them, meaning a lot of non-mechanical or metal things unless they're staying near a town or forge
>Very few biological warfare options unlike the Dormants
>No siege weapons, attacking a castle or any heavily defended city is practically impossible
>Mismatch of weapons and armor due to primarily being scavengers
>Will find a bit more allies and a bit less enemies due to being fuzzy giant-ass flies, but they're still giant-ass disease-ridden flies
>Caravan is much easier to attack than any other base
>Take out the caravan and that's pretty much it for them, it contains everything the Nomad group owns
>>
>>39728008
I'm pretty sure we came up with a way around a Miga's life-span preventing mages. Miga Mage aspirants would enter a ritual of meditation and drug-potions that would bring them the memories of their previous spell-casting life. Similar to an aboleth almost.

>>39728359
And yeah their uncleanliness is a racial stereotype that other races view them with because of their fly nature when they're actually pretty clean

I like to imagine the insects are engaging in regular diplomacy with each other, and having a council for their relations
>>
>>39736573
I don't.

I like to imagine great termite cities, where soft termite princes and wicked sorceress queens rule over subjects that scratch a living in the dust. Miga live off the refuse the higher up discard for the bottom rungs of society, and make what they can from it. Mothfolk merchants from a great empire to the north cross the desert to deal in silk and perfume. Spiders weave endless velvets for the rich, and ensnare them in their honeyed traps of embezzlement, fraud and intrigue.

Basically, standard sword-and-sorcery fair, but with insects. The main deal is, you've got a lot of different kinds of insect all living together rather than your standard "elves live in elfland, dwarfs in dwarfland, demons in demonland and witches in witchland". It's more interesting to see the different cultures play against each other.
>>
>>39736763

I imagine these insects living in a setting with the other traditional demihumans, so it would behoove them to at least have an understanding with each other.

I love this thread, I've actually been thinking about making an all insectoid race setting for awhile now. Mothpeople being a substitute for elves, Beetles for Orcs, Wasp people being a murder cult working as mercenaries, the trouble I kept running into was which race to make the "default" race, for the ones that don't want to do something fancy with their race, a replacement for humans basically. I was thinking Ants maybe but I'm thinking givin' their underground nature and size they'd be better suited to fill a dwarf role. And bees seems a bit to...fluffy, and are basically the ant of the skies. Grasshopper maybe? A variation of beetles?
>>
>>39737458

Grasshoppers seem like the salt of the earth, or like farmers.
>>
>>39737458
Perhaps I could make the beetles more your average beetle instead of the massive stag beetles I was thinking as an orc replacement. Perhaps that's why the two hate eachother, one is giving the other a bad name while the other thinks they're weak.

>>39737520
True, I could even seem them being nomadic in vast grasslands. Literally chewing the scenery as they went.

They're version of an undead horde would be a locust swarm. Since grasshoppers become locust due to low food in the enviroment a lot of the other races fear them or make sure they live in well feed areas.

But really, don't go making new races just yet. Focus on what we already have. Like Night Proms for Mothfolk where they wear glow worm apparel and try to out bling each other.

Yeah I know, I got some stuff about Muga and the Cult of Belshazar/Thuggee, but I'm saving it for the next thread.

If we have a next thread. For any that's remaining, when this thread hits page 9, should we make a new thread?

Well check this out. It's kind of lame to have two races of bloodsuckers and a host of vampires as well.
And the think about Mosquitoes is that only the females suck blood. The males are basically small flies anyway.
I think "Vampire" Miga should be a cult of female were-mosquitoes instead of a subrace.
Besides subraces, each of the races need other kinds of specialization.
If Miga usually worship Swarm Gods, then the Mosquito cultists would likely worship Parasite Gods instead.
They could even be swamp-based, and be in close contact with Hirudo. Perhaps they could even be sort of like blood-witches as well?
Becoming a Were-Mosquito would be a disease that it transmitted during a ritual where a coven of Miga Blood Witches add a new member to their coven, and at some point in the year they all transform together and raid a settlement as test for the newly infected Were-Mosquito.

I don't like that. I am always going to stick with the Miga fluff that was made in their original threads.

Mosquitos aren't a subrace
They're the chosen of Belshazar, God of Parasitism and Decay.
Plus there are vampires in the Mothfolk, called Moondrinkers.
Although mosquitos are more the "Noble and refined" type of vampire than the "Street rat" vampire that the Moondrinkers are.
And the Miga worship Myiagra, Goddess of Scavenging and Renewal.

Perfect Cell could actually emote.

Those bugs are two dudes, aren't they?

Okay, Dragonflies in real life are helicoptor murder machines, you know that, right? They are predators even in their larval stage--fuck those things will even eat tadpoles.

360 degree vision, strong enough fliers to migrate across oceans. Bite off the heads of their prey, perch, discard the winds and devours at their leisure.

This sounds ripe for ancient sentient eating race, long scattered, and terrible to behold.
