You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

After regrouping with your friends at the Lord-Governor's castle, you helped fend off the demonic hordes invading Morsland. Before long though, you found yourself face to face with Andras once again. For a moment things were looking bleak, as the former Champion proved a formidable foe even without his other arm. But then, something strange happened. Galadriel began to glow, you felt a strange sense of confidence wash over you, and the tide of battle was turned when you cut off both of his legs at the knee. Beaten and broken, Andras made his escape in a bolt of lightning, whether you'll see him again or not you're not sure. Just then, the crusaders of the White Watchtower entered the city, routing the invading demonic force. So the battle of Morsland ended, the first battle with the demonic hordes in 200 years, as a victory for mortals.

After the battle ended, you, your friends, and Knight-Captain Laurentius went to speak with Captain Gregory. The two captain discussed the recent attack and what countermeasures to make in case of a second attack. You, however, did not listen to most of it, as you were absolutely exhausted after the fight with Andras. Mostly, you just stood there, leaning on your friends for support, until you were addressed directly.

"I'll be leaving some of our forces here to help the city rebuild and prepare for any other demonic attacks." Laurentius said. "I know this city is your home, so I will allow you and the others to stay here and rest for a few days. In the meantime, I have much to do, and you will likely have to help once you return. For now though, get some rest. We have much ahead of us."

You think over all this while lying in bed at your old house. You have today, tomorrow, and the day after to rest and relax, but after that you need to return to the watchtower. While having time to relax in your old hometown is nice, you can't help but feel apprehensive of what's going to happen when you return to the tower. After today, it's almost certain there will be a crusade, and when that happens what's going to happen to you? This whole thing about only being a temporary Champion is starting look a lot more permanent than before. Will you have to fight in the upcoming crusade? Will Galadriel ever just pick someone else? Moreover, do you still feel the same way about all this as when you first accidentally picked up Galadriel's sword?

You sigh and start getting dressed. It's too early in the morning for all this, you can worry about it later.

You put on a normal set of clothes and grab Galadriel on your way out the bedroom door. The house was slightly damaged when you came here last night, the door was knocked off the hinges and everything inside had been tossed around. Odds are demons came here and turned it upside down looking for people, then left when no one was here. You doubt they were looking for you specifically though, many other houses on this street were damaged as well, some more than others. By comparison, yours came out alright.

The living room, slightly tidied up but still a mess, houses your friends from the honor guard, still asleep on the bedrolls they laid out on the living room floor. Apparently, the local church was full because of the other crusaders that stayed behind to help rebuild the city, so they ended up staying here. Besides, they are still your honor guard, so they felt it was best to stay close.

Right now all of them are still asleep, you could sneak out and let them rest, or you could wake some of them up to go with you. Or you could just stay inside and read or meditate instead.

How were losses among the defenders, and civilians?

I imagine a lot got to safety, but probably loses would have been a lot of injured.
>>

>>
>>39732048
Losses were pretty bad. Most of the civilians got there in time though. After the battle ended, pretty much everyone who could heal and wasn't bleeding out or at risk of passing out stayed to help the injured.

All in all, as bad as things were, it could have been much worse, and probably would have if you hadn't gotten there when you did.
>>
>>39732137

So it was a trade off really between getting here quicker or warning the other villages on the way possibly.

Only way faster may of been a forced march right through the night but may not of been able to warn villages then and collasping in town for sleep when the guard captain was warned.

You think about heading out, maybe visiting Reinhardt or stopping by Arniel's shop, but in the end your mind keeps going back to what happens after you get back to the tower. In the end, you finally decide it's best to talk to Galadriel about all this, get your concerns out in the air now so it doesn't drive you nuts the whole time your here. Clearing a spot on the living room floor, you sit down and meditate with Galadriel's sword on your lap.

------
You feel the familiar rush of wind blow past you, and when you open your eyes you find you're sitting on the clouds in front of Galadriel's mountaintop again. The sky is tinged a light orange, as the early morning sun is still rising above the horizon.

"You are awake. Did you sleep well?" She asks.

>"About as well as you could expect after having your hometown attacked."
>"Not really, I'm still worried about what happens now. Have you considered anyone else to be your champion yet? We're kind of running out of time."

You know regardless of whether Galadriel finds another champion, Sieg has Malphas. Alastor, and Andras's personal attention and he knows it. He is in way too deep to just go back to guarding/smithing.

Yeah, Sieg is wanted regardless. Alastor is interested in him since the Demon Giant slaying.

The problem is Alastor is a demon of wrath, he considers it SOP to do as much as possible to anger you. Including killing friends and family, in front of you, slowly.

"Slept like a log, that fight with Andras left me exhausted. What happened back there anyways, when your sword started glowing?"

"I lent you my power." She answers simply

"Uh, you might want to explain a little more than that. Do you mean like when you lent me your strength to fight the behemoth?"

"Not quite. Do you remember when we first met, what circle I said I hailed from?"

Circle. You remember reading in one of the books you borrowed from the tower library that angels organized themselves in circles and choirs. Circles consisted of angels that share the same virtue, while choirs were kind of like squads from the watchtower; groups of angels that worked together to accomplish a task. If you remember right, Galadriel said she was from the circle of Righteousness.

"Righteousness, right?" you answer, still not entirely sure how that relates to what happened yesterday.

"Yes. And like demons, angels are empowered when mortals express an angel's virtue."

"Okay, and what does that have to do with Galadriel glowing before I cut off Andras's legs?"

"Because of the bond between us, I gain even more power when my wielder acts on my virtue, righteousness. And because the link goes both ways, sometimes I am able to share the power I gain from your actions with you."

"So what happened yesterday was because you decided to share some of that power with me then?"

"Correct."

"So what, I can get stronger by just doing good things then?"

Galadriel shakes her head. "Not from small acts, no. The strength I gain from small acts of righteousness is not enough to make any major difference. Returning a dropped coin purse to it's owner, for example, will not make a significant change. Leading demons away so that your friends can escape, or attacking a giant demon to help other prisoners escape, however, will make a significant change, and I will be able to share the strength I gain from such actions with you when you need it."
>>
>>39733402
So basically, doing good things at risk to yourself will make you stronger. Sounds good...assuming you don't get killed by doing so.

"I guess I'll keep that in mind if Andras ever shows up again. Speaking of which, you think we'll ever see him again after he lost both his legs?"

"I do not know. If Malaphas does not kill him for his failure, then it is possible. Though I do not think we will be seeing him again for a long time."

"Yeah, it'll probably take him a long time to get back on his feet again." You respond, smirking at your own joke.

"Well of course, he doesn't have feet anymore." Galadriel points out, the joke clearly going over her head.

"I know that, I meant...ah whatever." You groan. Apparently angels don't come with a sense of humor or something. "In any case, things are kind of escalating now, aren't they?"

"Indeed. To think that Malaphas would allow an attack after all these years is worrying, to say the least."

"So what happens now? There's bound to be a Crusade after this, so now what happens?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean what about finding a permanent champion. Have you considered anybody else yet? I think there's plenty of possible Champions in the honor guard alone. What do you think?"

There's a long silence, before Galadriel finally answers.

"I don't know."

>"What do you mean you don't know?"
>"Well then let's talk about it now. I think (Specify) would be a good candidate, don't you?"
>"Why not? I can't be Champion forever you know. Though I guess after this I can't go back to being a guard either..."

"What do you mean you don't know?" You ask incredulously.

"I mean I don't know." Galadriel restates.

"Well what exactly is it you don't know? Like, you're having trouble choosing? Then what about Ganelon, he practically worships you."

"Ganelon will not work."

"Okay, well what about Justine? She's smart, and she's a good fighter."

"Justine will not work either."

"Well then what about Erika? She's strong, maybe a little rough around the edges, but you could rein her in."

"Erika will not work either, I've already mentioned that."

"Well then who?" You ask, growing more and more frustrated. "I've already told you, you're expectations are way too high, you're never going to find anyone that fits your criteria."

"I'm aware of that." She says, starting to sound frustrated as well.

"Then what's the hold up? If you've lowered your expectations, then why are you still having trouble deciding? Do you at least have somebody in mind?"

Galadriel hesitates. "Yes, but it's complicated."

"How, what's so complicated about it?"

"It is complicated because I do not want to ask it of them, yet I feel I must for their own sake."

You raise an eyebrow "Okay, and who exactly is this person?"

"Me? I thought you said from the start I wasn't fit for the job. Wait a second, were you testing me? Aureus dammit, I already said I'd throw you in a lake if that was the case."

"Test? No." Galadriel says, confused.

"Then what changed?"

"My view." Galadriel answers. "When we first met and I looked into your mind, I saw that you were a blacksmith's son who became a guard because he didn't want to inherit his father's work. I saw that you thought poorly of the crusades, thought little of what happens outside of your own city, and had a tongue too sharp for your own good. And when I chose you as a temporary Champion, I knew you were absolutely against it and hoped to be rid of me quickly. But over time, I saw more. I saw how worried you were when Erika was hurt by the imp's plotting. I saw you bury the doppelganger's body, despite her kidnapping you. I saw that you did not know of the farms in the Forsaken Lands, and how ready you were to help when you heard a villager had been kidnapped by Scavengers. I saw you lead away the flock of Scavengers at the border, risking capture so that your friends could escape. I saw your courage when you fought the Behemoth after helping the farm's prisoners to escape. And I saw how far you'd grown when you stood up to Andras, the one who'd nearly killed you not long ago. By no means are you perfect, but I feel I was wrong when I first judged you."

You listen to her and can't help but feel amazed at your own accomplishments when they're read to you. Not long ago you were just a guard, waiting for his shift to end so he could go drinking with his friends. Now you've fought demons, risked your life for your friends, and saved both the people in Alastor's farm and Morsland. Come to think of it, you admit you even view the crusades a little differently now that you've actually been in one of the farms demons keep people in.
>>
>>39735787
"So then what was that part about not wanting to ask me then?" You ask.

"As I've watched you and learned more about you, I've also come to realize I do not want harm to come to you either. You have been kidnapped twice and you home attacked because I chose you to carry my blade. I fear it will only become more dangerous from here if I ask you to be my permanent Champion, and yet if I do not I fear that Andras, Alastor, or possibly even Malaphas himself will target you, and you will be in danger regardless." Galadriel explains, her tone growing sad. "And now you see why I said it is complicated."

Well, she makes a point. You're not dense enough to think that Andras or Alastor will just forget about you if Galadriel goes with someone else. Even so, charging into the Forsaken Lands isn't going to be any safer. You're hesitant, but you can't help but feel you're in too deep anyways. It sounds like Galadriel knows it too, and feels guilty for dragging you into this mess. Thinking things over a bit, you finally decide on what to say.

>"I'm glad you think so highly of me Galadriel, but I still don't want to be Champion."
>"Sounds like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. Fine, I'll do it."

You sigh. "Can't say I like the idea of running back into the Forsaken Lands, but I'll admit I've seen things differently since the farm, and it sounds like I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't anyways."

"I'm sorry." Galadriel apologizes. "Then you'll do it?"

You nod. "Fine, I'll do it. But if you want me to be your Champion, then does that mean you've judged all the others unfairly? I mean, you realize I'm really just a city guard with a ridiculous work ethic, right?."

"Perhaps. After losing so many Champions and Andras's betrayal, perhaps I have been judging others too harshly. But city guard or not, you've done a lot in the time we've known each other. Not everyone can face Andras and live to tell about it, let alone defeat him."

You shrug. "Not everyone has a magic sword to help them."

"Perhaps, but I am only as useful as the one using my blade. Thank you, Siegfried, I will do all I can to make sure you survive the coming Crusade."

Well that's...both reassuring and not reassuring. Either way, at least now you know you're stuck here until either Malaphas is dead, or some demon lops off your head. Hopefully not the latter.

"If I'm going to be the permanent Champion, then I need to know a few things, like how to deal with the possibility of being backstabbed. From what I've heard, more than one Champion's been killed by humans."

Galadriel nods. "You are correct. There have been times when cowards fearing a Crusade have attacked my champions. My advice for you is to stay close to your honor guard, at least one of them so if you're ambushed by assassins you will have a fighting chance."

"Okay, and what if it's not a straight up attack, like if they try to poison me?"

"You may wish to speak with either Daniel or Joan about a spell to detect poison. You could also have someone test your food and rink first, though I would not recommend that."

"Okay, I'll ask them about it when I get the chance. How do you think people will react when they hear about the Crusade?"

"It always varies. Some will jump at the call, others will be afraid. Some will hail you as a hero, and others will blame you for lost loved ones. Galloway has always been a strong supporter of the Crusades, and many of their knights view it as a chance to prove their honor. Belmore believes it is their duty to serve, but some view their duty more grimly than others. Iseria has always been varied, some will be afraid, and some will be eager to fight. The closer you get to the border, the more extreme both sides will get. I would suggest keeping your identity a secret unless you are sure those present will view you favorably."
>>
>>39737334
"I'll keep that in mind then. Anything else I should know?"

"Only that once the Crusades begin, you will need all the strength you can get to survive. For that purpose, I shall grant you another of my powers. Use it well."

Galadriel unfurls her six wings and leaps off the mountain top, gliding through the air and landing in front of you. She holds out her hand and another glowing gold orb takes shape in her hand, before floating over to you. When you grab it, the orb disappears, and you find you now know how to use another of Galadriel's powers.

>New power unlocked!
>Angel Wings - Form wings made of pure light for an hour.
>Can used once per day. As your bond with Galadriel grows, you will be able to use this power more frequently.

Wings huh? You kind of wish you had that back at the farm, but from what Galadriel's said she couldn't have let you use them then even if she wanted to.

"Is there anything else you need, Champion?" Galadriel asks.

"I think I'll try fighting something hard today. Maybe something wings so I can test out my own."

"Very well then. You've already practiced against many wrath demons, perhaps it is time you trained against something different."

As she says that, the cloud scenery is replaced with a murky swamp under a moonless night sky. You find yourself standing in murky water that comes up to your knees, feet sinking into the muddy ground underneath. Frogs can be hear croaking in the distance, giving the place a very gloomy tone.

Just as you're wondering where the demon is, you see something rise from the murky water not far away. It turns to face you, wielding a huge club in one hand and sporting two horns. It's mouth opens wide, revealing rows of sharp teeth and a long tongue. Curiously, even though you asked Galadriel for a demon with wings, this one doesn't appear to have any. But you don't have time to complain, as the ugly demon lets out a noise that sounds like a cross between a bellow and a croak and charges straight at you.

>33/40 HP remaining

The impact knock you up into the air and face first into the swamp water. Apparently you don't have to be a wrath demon to pack a punch, because that really hurt.

You pick yourself up out of the swamp water and grit your teeth. This guy's strong, but you can give as good as you can get. Tightening your grip on Galadriel, you wait for the demon to come to you again, charging effortlessly through the mud and reaching out to grab you with it's free hand.

This time though, you're ready for him. First you dodge past his hand, then you slash the demon twice in the chest as hard as you can, leaving two deep scars in the shape of an X.

The demon clutches at it's chest and trips, crashing into the mud behind you. It picks itself up and glares at you before letting out that strange bellow-croak again. Suddenly, bones rip through the skin on it's back, shaped like wings. It flaps these bone wings and is lifted into the air, how that works you're not sure.

Well, now's as good a time to test your new wings as any. You concentrate, trying to activate your new power. Suddenly, six glowing wings made of light materialize on your back. You give them a few test flaps before lifting off into the air after the swamp demon.

Apparently the demon didn't expect you to fly after it, because you catch it off guard and land another nasty slash along it's side. It howls and loses control for a moment before balancing out in the air again. Now you see what looks like bone claws come out of it's empty hand, and it flies straight at you for an attack.

You hold out your left hand and mutter the incantation for Flash. The spell goes off and catches the demon off guard, blinding him. Quickly, you follow it up with another attack, just barely avoiding one of it's blind swings and landing a solid hit, cutting off one of the bone wings keeping it in flight. It plummets to the earth, smashing into the swamp ground with a loud thud. You imagine it won't take much more to finish it off.

Switching Galadriel into a lance, you dive bomb out of the air towards the crashed demon. It tries to get up and move out of the way in time, but you are too fast, impaling the demon through the chest right in the center of the X you left earlier. The demon lets out one last croak, before it goes limp.

"Very good. Perhaps I should have used something stronger."

The scene changes again, and you find yourself back on top of the clouds with Galadriel once again, no swamp or demon to be found.

"What exactly was it I was just fighting?"

"That was a Bogle, a demon of fear. They live in the swamps that lie on the border of Belmore and the Forsaken Lands, and can manipulate their own bones to help them fight."

"So those things live near Belmore's swamp? I think I'd rather deal with Scavengers, at least they're not as strong or smart."

"Bogles are not very smart themselves, but very few demons are as unintelligent as the Scavengers."

"Right, I'll keep that in mind if I ever run into either of them again."

You give the six wings on your back another flap. "You know what? Give me a few minutes to keep flying, this is pretty cool."

Galadriel starts to say something, but you've already taken off. You have to admit, this is actually really fun. You test the limits of your wings, doing loops and rolls in the air, testing how fast you can fly, and basically just goofing off. Galadriel watches from the ground, and you can sense that she's amused by how much you're enjoying your new wings.

"You know, I remember not long ago you said wings were cheating." Galadriel says in your head, referring to that time after you fought a Warden here.

"Hey, that was before and this is now." You say, waving her off. "How much weight can I carry like this though?"

"Right now, you could probably carry one other person if you wanted to, though it would slow you down."

"Okay, and what about any weaknesses? Can these wings be chopped off or anything?"

"No. They are a manifestation of my own wings, and are only semi-real. Weapons will pass through it harmlessly."

You look down at Galadriel, still standing on the clouds. Now that she mentions it, her wings are actually glowing a little, maybe because you're manifesting them yourself.
>>
>>39741131
"Well that's good. What about-"

Your sentence is cut off when you notice the wings on your back start to shimmer. You're not sure what's going on, until finally they disappear, leaving you very high in the air without any means of flying. Before you can even mutter a curse, you start plummeting back to the clouds.

Right as you're starting to panic, you see something move very fast out of the corner of your eye. Hardly a moment later, you feel someone grab you and suspend you in the air. Looking up, you see it was Galadriel who caught you, her six wings effortlessly keeping both of you in the air.

"One thing though, make sure you land if they start to shimmer, else you'll fall."

You nod wordlessly, glad you didn't have to learn what happens if you fall here. Galadriel slowly descends, releasing you once you're safely on the ground.

"You should go now, I'm sure you have other things to do then train and toy with your new wings."

"Right." You reply, somewhat embarrassed. Admittedly, you were kind of playing around, but who could blame you. Taking a seat again on the clouds, you close your eyes and end the meditation session.

------
When you awaken, the others are just now starting to stir. You stand back up and start wondering what you should do now before you feel your stomach growl. Come to think of it, you haven't really eaten breakfast yet, and you doubt there's anything to eat in the house considering you've been gone over a month and demons have ransacked the place.

Come to think of it, it's been a long time since you were home, and the last time you saw your family you were running for your lives. Maybe you should go and eat breakfast with them, you used to do that every now and then. Though then again, you'd be leaving your friends here to fend for themselves...maybe you could bring them with you? Your parents would probably want to meet the people protecting their son after all. Might want to grab some stuff at the market first though, would be kind of rude to show up with six other people and just expect them to feed everybody after all. When the others finally start getting up, you decide to ask them.

"Hey, are you guys hungry?"

"Starving." Erika responds.

"I also am quite hungry." Ganelon agrees, still wearing his armor (You thought he was joking when he said he slept in it. Apparently not).

"Is there a tavern nearby?" Roland asks, stretching his arms. "I have some gold on me if we want to go eat."

"Not necessary Roland, I actually have an idea."

-------
You knock on the door to your family's house. The sign outside creaks and swings in the breeze while you wait. It looks like your parents were lucky, because you don't see any broken windows and the door hasn't been broken down. A moment later, your father answers the door.

"Hello? Ah, son. It's good to see-" You father ends his sentence short when he notices you're not alone.

Standing behind you is a red head in plate armor still carrying her sword, a young obviously foreign man wearing very nice clothes, a man armored head to toe in armor decorated with religious symbols, a very cold and distant looking woman, a middle-aged elf, and a young woman wearing a pointy hat with a raven sitting on her shoulder. In front of them is you, wearing normal civilian clothes and carrying bags of groceries, Galadriel strapped to your belt in dagger form.

"Hey dad, just thought I'd stop by and bring breakfast if that's alright. Is mom awake?"
>>
Calling it a night here folks. I'll be around to answer any question if you've got them as always. Next thread should be Tuesday or Wednesday, keep an eye on the twitter in case something changes though.

Thanks for playing, hope you all enjoyed it.

Say, later in the day, you guys want to go out into the marketplace with our Honor Guard and try to find that pickpocket?

I'm just hoping we see that guy from the first thread and have him shit his pants in terror as he realizes he's got six crusaders and The Chosen One chasing after his ass.

Any idea when the next thread will be?
>>
>>39741689
Use them eyes baby
>>
>>39741665
I dunno, three rolls and taking the best of three seems a little much. The way I've been running it is with haste you get two rolls, if both hit you do extra damage, if one hits you do normal damage and don't get hit, and if both fail then you get hit. Maybe if I could find a better way to handle that I'd allow it, but only getting hit if all 9 rolls fail seems a little much.
>>39741689
Next thread should be Tuesday or Wednesday, keep an eye on the twitter in case something changes though.
>>
>>39741720
True it would be unbalanced a tad. What does leveling Blink do?
>>
>>39741747
Longer duration, ability to cast it on other people in a way similar to Haste.
>>
>>39741771
Wait is Blink a buff instead of a instant teleport?
>>
Here's an idea we level up blink and cast it on an enemy so they end up with Galadriel in them.
>>
>>39741837
Blink causes you to rapidly teleport short distances. So basically, one moment you're in from of the enemy and the next you're behind him, and then when he turns to hit you you're now to his left. It makes you hard to hit and confuses the enemy.
>>39741875
>Here's an idea we level up blink and cast it on an enemy so they end up with Galadriel in them.
I'm not sure how you'd accomplish that.
>>
>>39741994
Yeah but you said longer duration when we level. If its just an instant cast does it need duration. Did you mean distance?
>>
>>39742125
When I said duration, I meant how long the spell lasts. Right now when you cast it, you'll pop around rapidly for about six turns, and then the spell wears off. After improving it, Blink would allow you to keep teleporting for more than six rounds, in addition to letting another ally blink around as well. Sorry if I'm not doing a good job explaining it.
>>
>>39742175
OK so it is a buff. Got it. Sorry when I think Blink I think 1 cast, 1 Blink like mages in WoW.
>>
>>39742175
>randomly
that sounds INCREDIBLY disorienting for everyone involved.

like, after-battle-vomit disorienting.
