Welcome back to the tenth edition of Minotaur Civilization Quest! When we last left off, we had fully connected Alagar to the mainland, and set off on a bout of exploration and expansion! Though the migrants that had been sent out haven't yet reported back... Never the less, the show must go on!

To the king Brakla
Greetings sire! We’ve made landfall by the time this arrives aboard the Catherine, and may I say that this is truly an honor. To serve the Kingdom and all that. Anyways, the surrounding land, if you could even call it that, is somewhat similar to the forests of the humans. Note how I say “somewhat”, as the trees here are far more leafy, as well as being hotter than the blacksmiths’ forges. The water, while crystal clear on the coast, turns a dark, murky brown further inland. On top of this, there’s no solid land mass like the homeland. Instead, there are several small islands along the shoreline(s?). Our scouts also reported a strange forest to the west of camp, where strange trees with wide tops and no wood or leafs to be seen climb high into the sky. They also reported the distinct sense of being watched, and mentioned signs of movement and civilization. What you choose to do with this is up to you.
Sincerely yours,
Captain Akdra

This letter was received a day ago, and unfortunately the map appears to have been lost along the journey.

>A1: Magic Crossbows
>9: Catastrophic failure!
After forging a new iron crossbow for a friend in the Army, a blacksmith takes a shot at enhancing it with a rune. When he goes out to test it, he calls down a bolt of lightning right on top of him. At least the funeral was nice...
>Only 5 and below rolls kill children now due to Port lifting the curse.
>A2: Deep Ones
>89: Great success!
While she is still in Gorric, Catherine decides to meet these Deep Ones herself. Waiting til midnight, she heads out to the shoreline hoping to meet one. Soon enough the tell-tale fins cut through the water, and one crawls up onto the beach. She approaches, and it looks up and speaks.
>"You are mate of Brakla, correct?"
Shocked by the creature's ability to speak human, she stutters as she responds.
>"C-corrrect...Erm, I thought it would be good for our people to have proper relations, considerring how close we are."
The Deep One's scaled skin shines in the moonlight. It opens it's mouth to speak, them stops and gives a simple nod.
>"Agreed. We live together."
With that, it slinks back into the sea.
>A3: Hospitals
>99: Amazing success!
The recent development of anesthesia has brought about the idea of proper medicine, rather than gritting your teeth and baring it. Soon enough people are experimenting with different remedies to illnesses, and then bring these concepts to a rather large forum. They soon begin taking in patients for all kinds of ailments.
>Hospitals invented!
>+5 to all birthrates!
>A4: Schools
>24: Below average failure!
The more intelligent of the Tauren see the development of hospitals as a step forwards, and begin trying to set up locations of learning to properly teach the new generation the past, magic, medicine, and trades. Unfortunately, nobody can read.

Berengar meets up with Brakla in Drozen, having heard his kin had expressed some, concerns as to your actions.

With that he leaves.

>93: Amazing success!
(As a result of your high roll, you will receive a custom flag drawn by me, with the details decided by you.)
William, looking down at his kilt, has a stroke of genius. Heading over to the Royal Palace, he tells him of how the kilts signified what family one was from.
>"So yah see, why don' we get ya a prroper banner!"
After a moment of debate with William as to why he went from kilts to banners, he puts the design to a vote.

>A7: D&D Tournament
>19: Complete failure!
Though D&D is as popular as the arena, it's not exactly the most fun to watch...Any attempt at a league is soon shot down by lack of people showing up.
>A8: Electrical Engineering
>76: Above average success!
Electricity fascinates the humans, as they see it as a way to be lazily efficient. Soon enough, human merchants bring strange contraptions bigger than most tauren, and they appear to be able to harvest food far quicker than hands can!

>R1: Compasses
>88+5=93: Amazing success!
A tauren sailor walks up to Catherine the day she's about to leave for Drozen.
>"My Queen, I bring a device we used to find safe passage back home. We call it the compass, and using a piece of Mag-Ice, it is able to tell us the direction in which we're going!"
>"Interresting. I'll tell Brakla of this. Stay safe sailor."
Pocketing the device, Catherine gives him a nod and is soon off back to the capitol.
>Compass invented!
>This small device will alert you to what direction you're going, and will give +5 to all future scouting rolls!
>R2: Mag-ice
>49+5=54: Average!
The magnetic ice is amusing, to say the least. Any practical use for it is soon pushed aside for dicking around with it. Besides the compass, little more is made in the way of progress besides oddly designed pillars.
>R3: /tg/
>2: First dead child of the thread
Public discussion of D&D is common, and many people soon congregate in certain areas to discuss certain aspects of the game. However, soon enough these spaces are invaded by people who could best be described as having gone completely bat-shit insane. Anything that could resemble cohesive thought is soon dismantled, much like the child they strung up.
>R4: Weapon materials

"Okay, look're Brakla. 'ighland Steel is all fine an' dandy, but we'rre gonna need sometin' wit a bit more 'oomph' to it. T'at's why I brrought ya this!"
William pulls out a massive sword, glowing a bright red.
"Lil' Sophie said tah Elves used t'is all the time when they we're fightin', so I figured we could use it!"
>"Interesting, what's the name of this material?"
He looks at Brakla with a slight grin.

>A1: Expansion
>73: Above average success!
Seeing as how their previous option for housing has now up and sailed away, the settlers get to work on proper construction. The shifty sand makes poor work for the Geomancers, and soon enough wood is used for all construction. The huts liken back to the first houses you built, at least according to the elders. On top of this, land is cleared and plowed, allowing crops to properly grow!
>Growth can now take place in Cuth!
>+5 to all biological growth in Cuth!

>A2: Scouts
>39+15=54: Average!
setting out into the moist jungle, it's a miracle that anyone was able to find their way to the tall leafless trees. They then realize they could have taken the water. After a round of face palms, a single tree is chopped down for study. Movement is heard all around as a solitary creature with a wide cap over it's head and two pale yellow eyes emerges from the ground. If it had a mouth, you imagine it would be yelling.
>"LEAVE"
Everyone hears this in their minds, and after this single thought, it is gone. Packing the remains of the tree in their bandoliers, the scouts hurry home as quickly as possible.
>Fungal forest discovered!
>Fungi found?

>R: Jungle Survival
>52+5=57: Average!
Similar to the initial settlement of Gorric, many people aren't eager to leave after the reports of the yellow eyed creature come in. Paying this no mind, the local Army squadron learn from the scouts how to properly handle the jungle terrain, as well as what to not eat.

>18: Complete failure!
Brakla orders out a few scouts to find...something. They honestly weren't quite sure what as Brakla said it absentmindedly as Catherine was feeling another kick. They spend days wandering around trying to find anything of note, and find fuck-all.
>Catherine is about to have her baby
>Expected time of arrival: Two turns

>35: Failure!
The same people from before try again. This time they verbally advertise their establishment, and they actually attract some attention. Only problem is they too cannot read.

>A3: Drozen-Grok
>47: Average!
Considering how close the settlements are, the citizens of Drozen and Grok begin to ponder the idea of unifying into one city. The only thing standing in the way is the construction of the walls, and that is soon squared away. However the subsequently available land isn't immediately filled in. Instead, farmers' families, both tauren and human, fill in the space with fields.

>50: Average!
The civilian population wants nothing to do with the Snow Elf ruins. The Army, on the other hand, sees it as a monitoring station to make sure any uppity elves don't cause trouble. A mixed regiment is sent out to establish an outpost.
>The migrants will arrive in one turn!
>A8: Literacy
>22: Below average failure!
The Mages' take it upon themselves to teach apprentices how to read and write, and actively encourage teaching their friends. The first part apprentices do fine with, it's being social the little buggers have issues with.
>R1: Mag-Ice
>35: Failure!
The only practical use for Mag-Ice so far has been compasses, and you only need a small number of those. As such, no experimentation is done with the ice.
>R2: Mag-Crossbows
>56: Average!
Or so it seems. A blacksmith in Alagar has been hammering away at the oddly hard ice, and is able to forge it into a crossbow's shape. Loading it with a bolt, he finds that anything fired from it will hit with the same force as a Geomancer's stone boulders!
>Primitive guns invented!
>Lacking gunpowder and bullets, Mag-Ice crossbows function as a sort of inbetween for now.
>R3:Parachutes
>4: Dead child counter: 2
The Aeromancers, being able to easily save themselves in the event of an issue mid filight, attempt to design something to aid others when using gliders. A little tot of a Cryomancer decides to try one out. No one could recognize his face, and his mother had to be found to identify him.

>R4: Magic
>55: Average!
The Mages' Guild grows bored with our current magic. Pyromancy is as common as Geomancy these days, and little progress is made other than refining skills. So one day, a drunken Electromancer attempts something incredibly stupid. He takes a dead body (the student from before) and zaps him full of electricity. Brakla sends over 100 more colonists (same makeup as the previous) and they'll soon arrive.
>New colonists will arrive next Cuth turn!

As soon as the message is sent, many more scouts are sent out to find new goods. Unfortunately, the only one to come back is a ragged human missing an arm. >R: Boats
>35+5=40: Average!
The caravels are too large for most of the waterways near Cuth. As a result, most have taken to narrowing out large trunks and using them as boats, reminiscent of the first watercraft your people made. They're unfit for ocean travel, but seem to do well enough for inland travel.

He takes a pinch of the dust and draws a simple shape, no bigger than his palm, onto his warhammer. When he gives it a swing, the only thing odd about it is a short fizzle of sparks.

The Mag-Crossbow is a novel concept, and soon some improvements are bolted on. A barrel is added to try and improve aim, as well as adding sights. The bow is shrunken so as to be easier to carry. It's just made generally better!

>92+5=97: Amazing success!
Brakla sees this Sophite as a potential source of strength, and sends the troops that had just set up the outpost outside the Elven Ruins inside. They come back with cart-fulls of Sophite. They also speak of few, if any, signs of inhabitants. Any they did looked paler than normal, and they seemed horrendously afraid of the regiment.

Having given up on teaching the tauren how to read, the "teachers" if you could call them that take up spouting out history, magic spells, and general knowledge on street corners. This ends up acting as a fine news source, and people are actually learning!

>R3: Steam Engines
>47+5=52: Average!
Seeing as how one steam engine is barely enough to power a block's worth of lights, some improvements have to be made. Engineers proceed to repeatedly hit it with iron ingots. This more or less upgrades them, causing them to output far more power than before at half the cost!
>Improved steam engines invented!

>R4: Printing press
>54+5=59: Average!
Some teachers still cling to the idea of using written word to spread knowledge, and make a crude press to make copies of information. It's not exactly popular, as they keep hitting the same problem of iliteracy

>A8: Feast
>1: Critical. Fucking. Failure.

The news of Catherine's imminent child spreads like wildfire throughout the kingdom, and even to the foreign lands. William's now elderly father and his family show up, bearing gifts of fine haggis and elaborate works of Highland Steel. Representatives of the Halflings appear as well, bringing carvings of Mag-Ice. A solitary Deep One even appears, though he (?) remains close to the nearest source of water. The feast itself goes off without a hitch, with many toasts and general fun times. Until the very end that is. Catherine suddenly feels severe pains coming from her stomach, and as such many evacuate the area for the imminent birth. It doesn't come. Instead, a massive green, red, and yellow sprout explodes out of her stomach, leaving a gaping, gory wound. From that sprout a massive cap billows out, as well as two yellow eyes and arms. It yanks the unborn child out of the wound and opens it's twisted form, stuffing it inside. Brakla cannot help, as the shock is too much and all he can do is sit and watch in abject terror. It leaps from the wound, stepping on Catherine's head in the process. Diving for the nearest source of Earth, it burrows in. Any hope of retrieving it is soon gone, and attention is soon turned to Catherine. Having passed out from pain, her limp form bleeds profusely, and soon Hydromancers are called in to try and stabilize her. She is soon patched together with loose clothing and impromptu stitching. Her pale skin lies stained with blood, as does her black hair. The welcoming emerald green eyes are fading, though managing to hang on to the very edge of life. She comes to for a brief moment to mutter a few words that are just barely loud enough for Brakla to hear.
>"B-brakla...I'll be fine...Find our child..."
With that, she passes out.

>A1: Boats
>47+10+5=62: Success!
Word of the horrid news has not yet spread to Cuth, and they remain in blissful ignorance. Some more scouts are sent out to find anything of note within the jungles. Traveling by carved out boat, they manage to find the "root" if you will of the Fungal Forest. They appear to be undetected by the denizens, they take a look about and see a small figure being carried by a green, yellow, and red figure. It appears to be heading towards a massive mushroom.
>Fungi city discovered?

>R: Flora
>14+5=19: Complete failure!
Despite the recent findings of the possible Fungal City, little else is found among the dense foliage of the jungles. The scouts are soon forced to head back, having little left in way of supplies. Any samples they found mysteriously disappear in their sleep. Speaking of Sleep, none is found. None whatsoever.

Having arrived back in Cuth, the scouts ask for an easier method of travel, as fighting the current to keep moving takes a massive toll on their bodies. The idea of using the steam engines pops up, but they're far too heavy and cumbersome for the small boats the scouts would need to move quickly.

Lurbuk feels responsible for the loss of the Royal Baby. He doesn't know why, all he knows is he does. As such, he sets his mind on one singular goal:

Weathering lightning strike after lightning strike, he eventually creates a rune that does one simple thing. It breaks down biological matter.
>Death rune invented!

>A2: Literacy
>30: Failure!
The town criers sobs tell all. Any progress towards literacy is lost among the many tears and countless drinks. By the end of the day after the incident, half of the population is intoxicated.

>A3: Deep Ones
>40: Average!
Brakla, enraged but with no way to unleash it, decides to try and get aid from the Deep Ones. He walks down to the beach, cheeks still stained with tears. The Deep One is already standing there.
>"We no fight Mushroom. We help out though. Mushroom no go in water."
Before Brakla can speak a word, it ducks back into the moonlit water, just like so many nights before.

>A4: Help
>69: HOT DAMN LUCKY NUMBERS
All factions grieve alongside the tauren. Catherine's child represented something more than human-tauren love. The child represented a hope for peace and love in the future. With those dreams dashed, all that remains is the familiar call of war. William is just about to set out for his homeland when he eyes an army of Highlanders marching forwards, his father leading.
>"We'rre herre to fook someone up."
The Awaken, normally peaceful, view the assault by the Fungi as an attack on life itself. The stone golems demand to be put into action. They won't take no for an answer

The halflings have no words on this, though they do offer help in exchange for a favor in the future.
>A5: Scouts

>A6: Army
>56+5=61: Success!
A jingoistic fever overcomes your people. Blood must be spilled to satiate their thirst. The mushrooms must pay. The militia is overwhelmed by the new recruits, rivaling that of the Snow Elves siege force.
>+500 to Army!
>A7: Hero
>92: Amazing success!
The fighters are going at it harder than ever. Many young ones shine like the sun, though one stands out. A tauren, taller than even Brakla (roughly 3 meters tall), with the strength of fifty men, stands undefeated. He is personally approached by Brakla to enlist in the Army. He gladly accepts, and when asked for his name, he simply shrugs.
>R1: Sophite
>69: HOT DAMN LUCKY NUMBERS!
William himself takes his anger out on a multitude of training dummies with the Sophite sword. During this time, he takes notes on what exactly it does, finding that it has the tendency to cut through just about anything. Straw, wood, stone, obsidian, hell even Sleep!
>R2: Mag-Crossbows
>95+5=100: RNGESUS
The Mag-Crossbows are combined with Sleep dust, as well as a small hammer added to cause a spark. This leads to a small explosion when the trigger is pulled. Soon enough, any and all projectiles launched out are fatal to an unarmored opponent.
>Muskets invented!

A dust made specifically for killing fungi. That's what's needed. Soon enough, it's found that Sleep is lethal to any plant brought from Cuth...

>60: Success!
The blacksmiths do their part, hammering away at potential weapon designs. Soon enough, one gets the idea to stick a blade onto the end of a musket. With this, a whole new way of warfare is brought about.

As the news reaches Cuth, pure unadulterated bloodlust overcomes the populace. Action must be taken NOW!
>A1: Interrogation
>6: Catastrophic failure!
The decision is made to try and catch one of these fungal bastards. Sadly, we're fighting on their home turf. Any attempt to capture them ends with a majority of the party being captured and probably dragged back to Fungal City. Their cries can't be heard through the canopy. May they rest in peace.
>A2: Bridges
>55: Average!
The bridge connecting Alagar and Gorric inspires several Geomancer masters to form a massive land bridge between the Mainland and the New World. Unfortunately, what they end up doing is making two separate paths that only barely manage to meet, and each is of dubious quality.
>Land bridge established between the Mainland and the New World!

>R: Gliders
>40+5=45: Average!
Seeing as how there have been several mishaps involving gliders, many Aeromancers take it upon themselves to improve the safety of the contraptions. After several days, they emerge with a machine capable of flight with most tauren, as well as having a safeguard against falling in the form of a lightweight wooden box attached to the bottom of the body.
