Part two for the evening- I wasn't sure we'd be able to finish without it, haha!

Part one here, while it lasts:
>>39773405

++

[x] Climb away! The fandance is fast, but it can't climb like the Wyvern, and the height will help if we want to catch that other plane!

With as much effort as you spend thinking about walking, you open your throttles wide. Instantly the big jets behind you respond, howling like banshees. The Fandance gamely attempts to follow in a ballistic zoom climb- but this is where you hold the advantages. While it's got more powerful engines, it's also notably heavier, relying on older materials for a lot of it's structure and skin.

The both of you climb like rockets on escape trajectories, before you feel, more than see, the fandance behind you start to stall out. To her credit, the girl in the cockpit doesn't try to hold the climb- she knows, now, no doubt, that she was sucked into a vertical fight that she couldn't win. She rolls around, diving away.

You cut your throttles, instantly stalling, and start a tailsilde, following behind her, now close on her tail. You que up a pair of ASRAAMs and fire them, hoping they're fast enough to hit while she's still in the dive.

She jinks them, pumping chaff and flare into the sky behind her.

“You can't beat papa.” Lilya says over the net- you notice, now, that both she and Stasya have dealt with their opponents and are arrowing in on your duel- and once they join, the fight's over. “No one can. Give up Anya.”

1/2
>>
“I will not!” The girl- Anya?- Cries over the radio. “He has done something to you! Lilya, have you forgotten us? Have you forgotten family?”

“We were never family.” Stasya says. “Papa showed us what family means.”

“H-he- he's lying! He tricked you!” Anya shouts. “You two are very naughty! You know what happens to naughty girls! They go to see the colonel!”

In response, a pair of railgun slugs from the girls rip through the air- one's a miss, the other passes close enough you see skin panels tear free of the fandance. “Y-you shot at me.....”

The girls dive in, more like the Valkyries painted on their helmets now than the quiet little girls they are on the ground. They're all over Anya- twisting, weaving, with tracers and missiles slashing through the air at the fandance.

“Frank, those flankers just entered missile range.” Merlin calls. “Twelve targets, and there's additional targets out there, but they're holding.”

“Holding?”

“Yeah. I can't figure it out, there's forty plus bandits at eighty miles out, about heading zero seven five.”

“Weird.” you say. “Eighty miles? That puts them over Smolensk?”

“Yeah. There's a pair of dreadnoughts there, too.”

A pair of dreads and forty fighters? Sirens start going off in your mind- what are they waiting for? “What's the status of the furball behind us?”

“Just about over-” Merlin says. “Not that many soviet aircraft left and-”

“Warhound, I'm detaching Rose and Lightning to assist.” Ice calls, interrupting Merlin. “We're done here, anything they've got left is either bugging out or doing forced landings on controled airstrips.”

“Frank, we're going to lose that solo bandit if we wait much longer.” Merlin says.

>>
>>39780002
You do realise that shooting a nuke is an excellent way to ensure it does not detonate right? Or do you have no idea how they work?
>>
>>39780002
You obviously don't know how nukes work.

Yes. Shoot the damn nuke.

>>
>>39780055
shiiit flying carrier mk2!
>>
>>39780033
If it has been armed its just as safe to shoot.

Seriously, you crack the case of the core and the nuke is no longer a nuke, just a anticlimactic detonator with some very low yield radioactive material thats unable to achieve fission.
>>
>>39780002
It's actually very hard to set a nuke off by accident - most (competently-designed) nukes are build in such a way that you have to be VERY sure you want it to go off as a nuke, so the arming sequence is hella long, AND the internal charges have to go off in the right way. On the other hand, if you change your mind, it's EASY to disarm the damn thing.

As for shooting it, sure there'll be an explosion, but it'll probably be pathetic when compared to a single missile (has no idea if this particular comparison is true).

Unfortunately, we're dealing with Russian hardware that's not an AK-47.
>>
>>39780097
Could be a teleport device.
>>
>>39780105
As in, it's really, really hard to get a nuke to actually detonate. It requires near perfect timing, down to the length of the wires making a difference for most useful types of nukes.
>>
>>39780105
Generally Russian equipments are 'working as intended' if very unrefined and crude.
>>
>>39780105
Russian's who had access to martian tech for years.
>>
>>39780097
If it's a drone maybe they will fly it straight at NATO's flyers and fire a burst missile at the drone.
>>
>>39780105
It's still one hell of stretch to assume that shooting it will start the complex process of actually initiating sub atomic fission.

At absolute worst, it'll cause a fizzle, but Fronk would be well outside the range of that.
>>
>>39780155
What is your fetish for burst missiles, goddamn.
>>
>>39780155
So, Nimbus
>>
>>39780105
russian nukes are surprisingly sturdy with very good failsafes, for example when a rogue kgb faction tried to hijack a russian boomer with planted spetznaz in the 60's and launch missiles on hawaii when they tried to get the missiles to launch without the proper procedure, the failsafes detonated the payload without a fission reaction, which scuttled the sub with all hands

[x] See if the girls have it here, move to engage that solo plane- something about it seems off.

“Girls, do you have this under control?”

“Yes, papa.” Stasya says, almost as soon as you ask. “She thinks we're still as bad as we were when we had to fly against her. We've learned since then.”

For her part, the Soviet, Anya, doesn't say anything- though you're pretty sure bu this point she's too busy trying to survive.

You twist the wyvern around, arrowing in on the single bandit. In response, it starts a dive, scrambling for the deck and the relative saftey of the terrain.

“Frank! The flankers!” Merlin calls as a warning, while your defensive suite starts screaming in your ear- “Missiles! Missiles in the air!”

You don't have time for another furball- not if you want to catch that mystery aircraft. At the same time, though, it's pretty clear these flankers don't plan to just let you go.

[] Use the AMRAAMS you carried out- it won't get all of them, but it'll get enough to keep them off you

[x] Use the AMRAAMS you carried out- it won't get all of them, but it'll get enough to keep them off you

Unwilling to just let the mystery plane go- Merlin's having trouble even getting it's type- you switch to weapon group two- AMRAAMS. The flankers have only just started drifting apart to engage you- their own medium range missiles still seeking a lock.

You ripple fire all the AMRAMMS as soon as you achieve lock- with Merlin guiding in the back, the painfully bright blue stars of their rocket motors quickly shrink into the distance. You track them on radar- and watch the flankers scatter as the missiles appear on their screens.

Two of them manage to escape the missiles locked onto them, while the other six aren't so fortunate. The remaining half the formation seem to panic, scattering wildly. Still, the risk that any of them will attempt to re-engage is too great to risk without a little help.

“Hey, Shark, little help up here?” You call to the twins.

“All over it.” Alyssa assures you. “Flankers?”

“Six of them, careful.”

“Should have left eight.” She says, pulling forward from her spot on your wing and breaking to engage the flankers.

The unknown bandit ahead of you has gotten low, but you suspect it's at it's maximum level speed- it's not accelerating anymore. While it's mach 1.8 or so would be plenty fast in most scenarios, against the wyvern, that's practically a crawl.

“It's big, whatever it is.” Merlin says. “RCS is a lot bigger than a fighter.”

“So it's a bomber?” You ask.

“Has to be. Maybe a one sixty.” She responds. “We're only going to get one shot at them at this heading before they cross into Soviet airspace, Frank!”

Nukes are not unstable things ready to explode and annihilate everything forever at the slightest provocation.
They are NOT going to explode because you hit them really hard.
They are more likely to become little more than big pieces of metal with some funnily shaped chunks of uranium inside them if you shoot them.

Because guess what? Nukes are NOT nitroglycerin.

>>
[x] Use guns, with any luck they'll crash-land somewhere and the allies can recover the bomber

You select guns and move in. The pilots of the bomber, for their part, seem to know their best defense- the flankers- are out of the picture, and it's just you and them, now. They make some defensive efforts, but don't deviate from their flight path beyond that.

“Merlin, where's this guy headed?” You ask, trying to get inside the 500 meter range for guns- at this rate it won't take long, but you'll be damn close to the Soviet border when you do get the shot.

“I don't know.” She says. “There's nothing along this line on this side of the border, and only Krasny or Gusino on the other side.”

“What the hell are they doing here?” You ask yourself, closing to inside a kilometer.

One final defensive break from the pilots of the blackjack prove to be exactly what you need- your 25mm cannons vomit a deluge of shells into the aft quarter of the blackjack, which skids away, black smoke belching from the engine pod on that side.

“Damnit!” you hiss when it regains controlled flight- skidding around to get another shot, which sends shells across the top of it's stabilizer, wrecking it.

“Frank! Watch the border!” Merlin warns, her voice overriding your thoughts for a second. The blackjack- apparently piloted by a damn master- limps back into controlled flight, turning back onto it's heading. You've got one more shot at them to bring them down, unless you want to follow them across the border.

[x] I've got enough missiles to do the job

Even with it crippled, you decide you're too close to the border to risk another gun attack. The ASRAAMS, however, have enough range to reach out and hit the bomber- you launch your remaining two and break away, keeping your sensor overlay up to watch them go.

Both of the missiles find their mark- your LADAR gear is accurate enough to show you both missiles hit and tear pieces from the bomber, the first impacting the remaining turbines and the second blowing the tail completely off.

You turn away just as Merlin starts screaming a warning- a flash of her panic, pure and overwhelming, shooting through your mind.

The world behind you goes white.

Your sensor package- never designed to deal with that, but designed to momentarily blank out so your own Tesla cannon wouldn't blind you- polarizes out, blacking everything except non-visual spectrum sensors, then blanking infrared and the ultraviolet packages. You feel, more than see, the fireball behind you. The shockwave throws debris up in front of you as you slam your throttles wide open into max emergency power and begin to outrun it- if you'd have been a bit closer, you'd be dead.

The adrenaline jolting through your system slowly fades away. “How close.” You croak out, wishing for water.

“I-I don't know, Frank. Close.” Merlin says. “Radio is fried, sensors are out. We're lucky to still have control.”

You nod- even the VDNI feels fuzzy- Merlin’s still there, of course, but she's hazy, like viewing a friend through heavy fog.

“Where was everyone else?” You ask- it's your turn to shoot panic through the link.

Anon-tan licked the spit from her lip as she paused between labored breaths, her chest heaving ever-so-slightly up and down as she tried to calm down. That last lewdfic was so... Exhilarating. So much so that she couldn't help but, ahem, attend to her needs. The electric thrill that shot up from her groin and into her core was pure bliss, unfiltered ecstasy.

Finally she managed to assume a modicum of normalcy, and sat down correctly in her chair. A lewd smirk was reflected in the computer screen as she typed her next sentence:
"So ghost's been out for a while, so why aren't y'all posting lewds?"

“Clear. We were closest.” Merlin says, confidently. “God... Frank, everything's gone. Radar's out, radio's out. ECM is gone. We’re a mess.”

“Can we make Torun?”

“Yeah.” She says. “We've got the fuel, and the critical systems are ok. Frank- are you ok?”

“I'm fine.” You say, lying. That was a nuke. The crazy bastards were trying to use a nuclear weapon against you- against other people! And for all your skill, all your talent- if you'd have been even a few hundred meters closer, you'd have never made it out. How you did is anyone's guess.

“ We can probably put down at any of the forward theater airfields.” Merlin says, bringing up a map- thank the gods the nav computers survived. “The airport in Minsk is open for emergency use we can put down there.” She says, her calm starting to take over. It's all so can-do for her, especially when you're there.

“But Minsk is small and will probably be handling a lot of jets right now.” She warns. “There's also Minsk south, but that was damaged pretty badly, the runway there is PSP and they probably won't have much space either.”

“Anything else?” You ask.

“Not much. There's a couple bases in Eastern Poland, but it's not much farther from there to Torun.” She says.

That's my issue. They're going to have a lot of jets landing there. There's going to be less traffic at Torun to at least cause less problems with us having no comms.

The choices are Minsk which is closer but with good probability it will full and packed, or Torun which is far farther with our sensors crippled, but has guaranteed space for us.
Both are kinda shitty honestly.

The idea is based on the blast fucking with the enemy planes as well as ours. If they can't use their radios efficiently then how are they to co-ordinate their battle. And also, we have self-darkening visors and we nearly got blinded, Maybe a few Russian pilots got blinded too and crashed. Or at the very least the enemy would be startled that a FUCKING NUKE went off.

>But Merlin herself said the Radar, radio, and ECM is out.

You realize that those components have a few things in common, right? I.e. sensitivity. Radios also require antennas (in old fighters that was often a wire strung from the rear of the cockpit to the tail,) i.e. a long conductor in which an electromagnetic field will generate current - lots of current - maybe enough current to blow out the system.

Nav lights... not so much. Because all a nav light is, is a bulb - a very bright, heay-duty bulb with a thick filament. It's like the lightbulbs in your kitchen, basically; there are no delicate components in it to fry. EMP is not like a lightning bolt; it's more like throwing an electromagnet into your room. It'll fuck up your computer, but not the light fixtures.

Any EMP which was strong enough to literally blow your lightbulbs off the plane would be strong enough to burn out the electronic controls system, hardening or no, and both Frank and Merlin would be hanging under a 'chute right about now or Merlin would be getting Goose'd

[x] We'll head to Torun. We'll be fine.

“We'll head for Torun.” You say, turning the fighter onto the correct heading for home. “We'll be fine.”

“I'll try to get some of the systems to reboot.” Merlin says. “But the damage is pretty bad.”

The airspace is a mess- as you pass by Minsk, you can see all the aircraft trying to land, practically lining up on approach. Of course, with radios out, you can't contact them- or anyone else- but you're glad to see that there's still plenty of people left up here.

Still, the trip back is nerve-wracking. Merlin never really does get anything but the short range sensors to reboot- the radar is probably physically fired, though your LADAR comes back up after about ten minutes. Datalink is down, of course, and without it, your comprehensive picture of the airspace. The entire way back your shoulderblades itch, expecting a missile or a dreadnaught maser beam.

When Torun finally crawls into sight, you can't see any other aircraft around it, though that doesn't mean much. You line up almost by memory, for once glad when your wheels kiss pavement.

You don't taxi all the way into the hangar, instead stopping on the apron- where Wendy stands, looking at your fighter.

Merlin goes through an abbreviated shutdown checklist, while Wendy walks over and helps with the nose ladder. Finally, you unplug from VDNI, suddenly noticing the world's a lot more.. dull, for some reason, though it seems less fuzzy around the edges.

“Sir Bishop.” Wendy greets you with a hug, one you return wearily. “We weren't sure-”

“Close, but not quite.” You say with a tired smile. “Does everyone know I'm down yet?”

She nods, helping Merlin down from the fighter. “I notified them myself.” She says, pointing to the hangar phone. “You are to go straight to the house, and if you argue with me, I am to make sure you go straight there by any means at my disposal.” She says the last with a grin

“That wasn't meant for me?” You ask.

She looks at you like maybe you've been flying too long. “We don't think so. Commander Kazinski thinks yours was meant for the four lane road and the railway going into Smolensk. We've no way of knowing, of course.”

“How is everyone?” You ask, taking off your helmet and shaking your head to try to dislodge some of the sweat.

“We're all well.” She says. “No major injuries, certainly none from the.... “ She pauses. “Well. Your daughters are down and well.”

You nod. “Are they ok after meeting... what was her name? Anya?”

Surprised by that- what was she thanking you for?- you head to the showers.

You're intercepted by Rachel- who enfolds you in a bone crushing hug of her own. “What did I tell you about scaring us like that?” She asks.

“Don-mffff” Your answer is cut off when she kisses you hard, pressing you into a wall. She backs off after a second, blushing.

“I- ah.” She says. “Asshat. You scared us.” She says, leaning back into you, her face turned in against your chest. “The girls almost cried. I almost cried.”

“Sorry.” You mumble, noting how nice this is.

“You owe me.” She says. “You owe all of us. But you owe me.”

“Oh?” You ask, leaning in to kiss her again. “Want to start with a shower?”

“It's a start.” She says, her voice just barely a whisper in your ear. “But just a start.”

Maybe. My gut feeling is that he and Merlin's anxiety/adrenaline were feeding back into eachother, so they were extra wired while still plugged in. When they unplugged, they only had their own to go off of.

more like THE DRIFT

SHE'S CHASING THE RABBIT
>>
>>39783103
Not today. I'm hoping to have another chapter of Ogawa done in a week or so.

The Ice/Slider/Katya pieces, after that.
>>
>>39783078
Yeah, just gonna blame that one on lack of sleep which I think I'll fix now.
>>
If the archive descriptions isn't "Russia drops the bomb!" I'll be disappointed anon.

>their entire western border- almost every major road or rail line got... well

Holy sweet fuck, shit just got real on a scale I wasn't prepared for.

>>39783002
Thanks for running Ghost, please don't skimp on the details of effects of the Soviet's mass nuclear attack next thread.
>>
>>39783088
Yep. Completely by accident.
>>
>>39783002
>birthday
huh. Maybe I'll push Slider la Slider back a week or two and draw you something else instead.
>>
What happened to the dreadnoughts, I knew the Twins were dealing iwth any Fandances or Flankers, or did they and the girls finish them off?

Also how do the girls feel about the word Colonel now, or rather what do they think of Holly?

Same. It's one thing to joke about pixy and belka but then it actually fucking happens
>>
>>39783002
By the way, for your Birthday do you want that Fronk's helmet art or Slider and Frank doing it under shower art for next week?
>>
>>39782956
>“You are to go straight to the house, and if you argue with me, I am to make sure you go straight there by any means at my disposal.”
Wait, Frank and Merlin were pretty damn close to a nuke going off. Shouldn't they be going through decontamination procedures?

I'm honestly wondering how less knowledgeable about radiation and its effects people are in SWQ-verse; we've had a lot of experiments and testing and such out here in the real world.
Also something something tac nukes not so radiation comrade
>>
>>39783188
I'll be honest, I don't really see the appeal for doing it the shower. It looks awkward and you don't get clean.
>>
Still typing up that summary of the dream I had. Turns out intense memorizing puts a lot of stress on the brain, who knew? Feeling a bit frazzled so I'm going to have to stop for now but it will definitely be ready by next week.

>>39783126
I look forward to your tales of Fronk giving Rachel the sliderwinder.

>>39783088
>>39783141
Are you 100% sure they won't just fly all the planes Fronk wasn't around to shoot down back to base before rearming them to go and hit the one spot they missed?
>>
>>39783210
It's 1991 for fucks sake anon, this isn't the 1930's and we're not Marie Curie.
>>
>>39783192
I imagine the sealed and armored cockpit of the Wyvern would keep them safe from any radioactive particles spread by the blast, which is the only thing you can really 'decontaminate' from a human body without large quantities of prussian blue.
>>
>>39783223
Spoken like a virgin.

Showersex is awesome, though you have to be careful you don't slip.
>>
>>39783239
as long as they don't run the shower cold.

Different anon here, a lot of the effects and nature of radiation poisoning from nuclear blasts were totally unknown until the tests in the 50's and 60's. Many of the soldiers who were recruited to observe the bombing tests in that period were woefully underprotected, and subsequently developed major health problems as a result. I've heard stories about some of those men being far too close and dressed in nothing but standard combat fatigues or even short sleeves and pants.
>>
>>39783245
They are going to run the shower cold.

(Mostly because everyone else who is taking showers somewhere in the house is also using hot water and they'll have to move to a bed sooner rather than later)
>>
>>39783274
Yeah, like I said, it's fucking 1991 for fucks sake.
>>
>>39783230
Can you be certain the cockpit is still sealed after the blast wave? Also, they may have touched the skin of the Wyvern while they were getting out.

>ice cream
One of those was a cupcake. Go to sleep CAPTCHA, you're drunk.
>>
>>39783314
1991 in a world where massive nuclear weapons stockpiles were much less of a thing. These might have been the first nukes used in war, I can't remember if we nuked the martians or not or if that was ever confirmed
>>
>>39783331
>Can you be certain the cockpit is still sealed after the blast wave? Also, they may have touched the skin of the Wyvern while they were getting out.

they would have hosed the plane off after landing, for sure

they had protocols for this shit
>>
>>39783346
None of which were followed:

>You don't taxi all the way into the hangar, instead stopping on the apron- where Wendy stands, looking at your fighter.
>Merlin goes through an abbreviated shutdown checklist, while Wendy walks over and helps with the nose ladder.
I don't see them hosing off the plane, do you?
>>
>>39783346
We did. You'll notice that they did no such thing
>>
It is probably not anywhere near as bad as you guys are worried about.

Even an abrams can't survive a point blank nuke, Jakes glory hounding probably took him right to where one was intended to go off
>>
>>39783611
now the story of how Booze Hound got launched thousands of feet into the air to arrive right next to a nuke airburst, that is a story that needs to be told
>>

Well I guess that explains what sort of ordinance they're letting Jake handle these days.

>>
>>39783284
Not to mention Ice is probably waiting for a report or something and vice versa on what happened?
>>
>>39784930
For the next few hours the only "report" she's gonna get is Slider's screams of ecstasy.
>>
>>39784973
She'll only try and be quiet though.
>>
>>39786159
but won't succeed, it's going to be a subconscious competition for the girls isn't it? except for Katya, it will be totally conscious for her.
>>
>>39786186
haha, The other girl's at spell caster are going to find this very old very quick though again the cold water.
