You find yourself staring down at a scene of bloodshed on a massive scale. Your perspective is warped, it almost seems as though you hover just slightly above and behind the soldier you're scrying. The soldier, a man by the name of Mazhar who you've been sent to kill, currently occupies himself fighting a pair of strange beast while a short man in heavy armor, a massive set of four horns protruding from the top of his helmet, calmly loads a pistol. The beast remind you of cats, except far too large, and their long, thick fur is white with a scattering of grey spots. Quite unlike any cat you've seen.

One of the beast lunge and Mazhar dashes towards the other, which leaps away. He uses the opportunity to change course and charge the short horned man. The man discards his pistol as Mazhar closes and instead draws a long-bearded axe from a leather thong attached to his breastplate. He swings the axe deftly as Mazhar thrust, hooking the blade between the axe head and the polished wooden handle and wrenching the sword from Mazhar's grasp, only to find a dagger punching through his throat. You hadn't even seen Mazhar draw the dagger.

Mazhar liberates the axe from the grip of the dying horned man and whirls around, planting it into the side of a lunging beast and carrying through to slam it into the ground. He braces one hand against it's skull and wrenches the axe free, advancing towards the last remaining hostile creature. It backs away, before ultimately turning tail and running. Sighing, Mazhar allows the axe blade to slide free of his grasp and makes his way across the cobbled forum the battle seems to have taken place in, retrieving his sword and sliding it into its scabbard.

He advances across the forum to a ledge, and you realize the sheer scale of Polop. You can only just barely make out the walls of the city in the distance. Fires burn all across the city, and you can faintly make out a barricade of some sort blocking a road beneath whatever platform Mazhar is defending. There's a voice shouting in Elven, and Mazhar glances over his shoulder. You expect him to draw his blade but instead he throws his arms wide and turns himself fully, affording you a glimpse of about a dozen ragged and wounded soldiers. Their armor is in various states of disrepair and perhaps a third of them are unarmed. You'd guess there are fifteen or so total. Sixteen with Mazhar.

One of the men holds aloft a woman's severed head, her long ears and delicate features marking her as an elf. The eyes stare out dully, half-lidded, and her mouth droops lifelessly. To be frank you're more interested in what you see in the background. Two stepped pyramids loom above the city in the distance, while a third, smaller pyramid lies closer to the plaza where the soldiers converse. Whoever that woman was they seem quite happy she's dead.

(2/3, I lied)

Mazhar sets to traveling with the band of other soldiers and you cut the flow of vys to the prism. You get the sense that you're falling an impossible distance and then all at once your eyes snap open. You're sitting in the dimly lit remnants of an ancient Rhynian guard tower with a little girl, currently occupying herself by weaving a circlet from grass, and an artificially created ancient construct who simply stares at you dispassionately. No more than an hour ago you were battling a pack of rabid beast set on eating a group of villagers fleeing from their destroyed home, and the dragon which has taken up residence within.

You pluck up the prism by the stand, noting with some mild interest that the inside of the prism has changed. Previously it was almost perfectly translucent and seemed to glow with some sort of internal energy. Now it swirls dimly, filled with some sort of opaque, milky-white fog which occludes all light, absorbing it as it hits the edge of the crystal. Regardless, you tuck the artifact back into your cloak and resolve not to worry about it for now.

Instead you address Aylin. “You seem less terrified of Regulus than you were when I first brought you here. Have you resolved that he's not going to kill you at any moment?”

The girl shakes her head, speaking with the sort of deadpan lack of emotion you'd expect from Chryssa. “No, but I've decided not to worry about it. If he is indeed planning to kill us then there is little we can do except hope he makes his move prematurely. For now we need him, he will be useful if we encounter any more dragons hunting in the area.”

Regulus buzzes in annoyance, speaking after several seconds of delay. “I can assure you I have no intentions to do either of you harm.”

You shrug your shoulders. “Well, I believe you Regulus. For now at least.” Turning your attention once more to Aylin, you continue. “Anyway, I'm going to meditate for now. I recommend you get some sleep. Regulus will keep watch and if he attempts to murder you I'll surely react before he does. Probably. Either way, dying in your sleep isn't so bad.” You pause, a thought occurring to you. “How old are you by the way?”

The girl, covering her mouth with the back of her hand to conceal a smile, speaks with a little more mirth in her voice than she was previously. “I'm fourteen as of last spring. I'll be entering my fifteenth year next month, on the twelfth.”

That reminds you, your birthday is tomorrow. Odd, to think you'll probably spend it either fleeing these dragon-infested plains or hunting down some poor sap in a war zone. You're still not sure which. Regardless, you fold your legs beneath yourself and adopt a meditative pose, letting your eyes slip closed and feeling your consciousness slowly fade away as you focus on the steady rhythm of your breath.

As you sink deeper and deeper into your trance the ebb and flow of ambient vys fades into view, points of disjointed light marking Regulus and a glowing, vaguely humanoid silhouette marking Aylin. You note that her vys pool is unusually large, especially for an untrained human. More like that of an elf's vys pool. Curious, perhaps she has some elven ancestry?

The ebb and flow of vys fades from sight, instead replaced by the souls of yourself, Regulus, and Aylin. You and Aylin have golden yellow orbs of light sitting in your chest, but regulus is a bit more complicated. Only the barest wisp of gold bleed through a cocoon of blue light that marks the various enchantments placed across his body.

Using Earth magic you carve away a slim shaving of your soul, feeling your emotions and your thoughts bleed away. Curiously, the effect isn't as pronounced as it was last time. You took just as much, but you took it in the form of a thin strip cut from the very edge. Maybe the closer you cut to the core of the soul the more you're affected? Regardless, you float the ball of vys into the space where your head ought to be and immediately feel a rush of power as it begins to degrade, that lethargy you felt after cutting it away banished in an instant.

Why are we not doing void meditation?

Acting on instinct as much as conscious thought you tear apart the clump of your soul, weaving it into a sort of thin blanket which you drape over yourself. This time it's not nearly as patchwork as it was the first time you attempted this, the golden clump smoothly transitioning into a coating of some sort of hard, black substance you don't recognize. You feel yourself somehow separated from the rest of the world, as if it is somehow less real than you are, less important. It's a curious sensation.

Your eyes snap open, and you feel your understanding of metal magic enhanced tremendously. You increasingly get the sense that in order to enact permanent and lasting change on the world you must make sacrifice, that the discipline of Metal magic is about abandoning hubris and embracing humility.
>Congratulations! You're now an Expert Metal Vatis!
>Status Gained: Shielded (+6 against outside influences for the next two hours.)

Glancing around the ruins of the watch tower, Regulus still stares at you unblinkingly, his four beady little eyes giving you a marked sense of unease as they bore into you. Aylin has fallen asleep, a broad circlet made of woven grass wrapped around her head. It looks to still be dark outside, you'd guess it's about three or so in the morning.

for when we get back if y'all feel jewish enough
i say we start buying up large areas of useless land that won't be useless after we have access to all that water and i also think we should look for a way to restore our family fleet, perhaps by starting up a logging company? and if we restore the fleet or make it even bigger + buying up all or most of the future farmland + taking over the whole or close to whole water market will make our family the most powerful one in the country
the influence we can get from that could be used to speed SKs research up and the we ask him for something anti air, something simple as a cannon could be effective if we enchant it and have SK make explosive cannon balls or we can have him look into filling the with liquid nitrogen
and if we research the enchantments on the trident and then apply them to the cannon balls i think we'll stand a pretty good chance
and if that isn't enough it might buy SK enough time to make something more modern
the trident got more powerful when vys was used on it so if SK was to hook up on of those self sustaining lantern mechanisms to a cannon ball with the same enchantments i think the dragon would be pretty dead

You push yourself to your feet, staving off a sudden fit of vertigo as blood rushes back into your legs. For a moment you simply stand there, letting the feeling seep back into your limbs, before turning your attention to Regulus. “Keep watch, I'm going to go scout around the area to see if the dragons are still around or if they've retreated into the mountains.”

He responds only with a high pitched buzzing sound, which you take to be assent. Ducking past the woven grass mat which serves as your doorway you see your two guar with their legs folded up beneath themselves, leaned against one another with their eyes closed. Seems even guar sleep, you just sort of thought they ate all night. Certainly seems like they ate most of the night, judging by the area of cleared grass around the collapsed tower.

You approach your saddled guar, snapping your fingers next to the hole in its head that marks its ear. Its eyes open, and carefully it pushes itself to its feet. You pull yourself into the saddle and nudge it lightly in the sides, spurring it into a walk and steering it towards the road. Even from here you can see the glow of small fires scattered throughout the shattered remnants of Khmedi. However, you don't see the hulking form of a dragon looming over the city so hopefully it's already returned to wherever it makes its lair.

You ride out across the plains in search of any signs of those smaller, two-legged dragons but you don't find any. You find a number of dead villagers and a few half-eaten guar but no sign of the raptors which presumably killed them. After about a half hour of riding out across the endless sea of grass you turn about and start the return trip, spurring your guar into an even trot.

You reach the collapsed tower without incident and dismount before ducking inside. You find things largely as you left them. Aylin is still asleep and Regulus sits staring at her, though he switches to staring at you when you enter. Reaching into your cloak you extract a handful of jerky, crouching down and shaking Aylin awake whilst simultaneously shoving a chunk of shoe leather into your mouth and gnawing away at it in the hopes that it'll soften up.

Aylin cracks an eye open, and then shoots upright. She scurries away from you, her expression devoid of recognition. Only after a few moment's panic does she finally recall the events of the day prior, and force herself to calm down. “Ah, I apologize. Good morning.”

You offer her half of the jerky you extracted from your cloak, though she denies it after staring at it suspiciously for a time. “Good morning, sleepyhead. Now, listen. I've got a question I need to ask.” You tear off another chunk of jerky, forcing it down with some difficulty before speaking. “What do you want to do? Meet your mother in Licae, hope she hasn't moved on without you? I could drop you off at the Academy of Anthus and talk to a friend of mine about having you enrolled as a student-”

Her eyes fly wide and she cuts you off, her tone fearful. “You've been to the Academy? My mother says that it is an awful place. She says that they take young Vatis while they sleep and ship them to the south to serve as slave for corrupt foreign nobles.”

(2/3)
>>
>>39834001
And forsake any right to ask for other shit as well.
>>
You scrunch your brow together. “What? No, no. That's nowhere close to true. The Academy just trains Vatis to reach their full potential, they don't get shipped off anywhere. In fact some of those corrupt nobles you speak of, my people I might add, attend the Academy rather than training with Vatis from my homeland. It's a perfectly respectable institution.”

She seems leery, and you suppose you can't blame her. Her mother seems to have indoctrinated her into this ideology that anything foreign is evil. It's quite odd, you must admit.

I am all for it.
We're going to have a title that allows us to buy land. We could easily buy a shit ton of "useless land" out side of the cities new gates. Once we have the water plants working it will turn a lot of the land farm able. And give a boom in population, while we become the owners of the land in which most of the food is produced.

Also we are set to buy a lot of wood from the next place we go. And we're going to buy as much as we can afford and stuff it into our cloak. Bring it back to our father, and tell him we want our own fleet. But he can be in charge of it. And get a % of all profits made from our fleet for x amount of years while he manages it. Like the deal he gave us.
And we will be rolling in fucking it.
While ofcourse financing Thad. And siphoning power little by little from the shah. Growing our own army. To invade our neighbors "in the shah's name" with his blessing. And leave him in power in name alone.

You debate internally whether or not you want to offer to take her on as an apprentice. Honestly, it's not like you're going to drag a child into monster infested ruins so you're not sure how much you could really teach her. You suppose you could have your old Master cover for you, but he's got an apprentice of his own. You already feel bad for imposing on his time as much as you are. Regardless, you're not sure you want her to go back to her mother and if she's completely unwilling to consider the Academy you're left with few alternatives.

With a sigh, you speak. “Well, I could take you back to El-Amin with me and allow you to live on my estate as my apprentice, you'd get to enjoy the lap of luxury, but I can't guarantee you'd learn much of anything. I'm often traveling abroad in search of some forgotten artifact or exploring dangerous ruins or battling bandits, or dragons, or some similar threat.” You shrug, pleased to see a tinge of admiration to the way she looks at you. It's always nice to be respected.

Granted, you did leave out that you usually get yourself into whatever trouble you're forced to fight your way out of, and you did sort of cause her village to be burned to the ground by a flying reptile. You ignore that for now. “Anyway, it's up to you. I have no vested interest in whatever it is you choose.”

She seems to consider it for a moment, before speaking hesitantly. “Can you... tell me a little more about the Academy? I've only ever heard about it through my mother.”

(1/2 or 3)

>>39834699

>>
>>39834691
what the aztecs learned was "if you piss off all your subjects by regularly sacrificing them to your gods they don't even share then as soon as literally anyone else comes along they'll jump ship."
>>
You shrug your shoulders. “Sure, I don't see why not. It's a vast complex of several buildings, the construction grand and elaborate. It's really quite a beautiful building, especially considering it was built by human hands. I would not be nearly so impressed were it a Samjan construction, of course. My standards are higher. They have an odd method of educating young Vatis. They take on young men and women and teach them communally, rather than individual. Of course, they also seem to have more rules regarding conduct than my people do. Teachers seem to treat the students with some level of respect, and students are expected to do the same.”

You stroke your hairless chin contemplatively. “The Archmagos, that is to say the head of the school, is a Samjan much like myself, but he has a sympathy for the lesser races. He apparently produced a child by a human woman and was banished as a result. I can certainly understand his sympathy, I myself was banished for slander when all that I said was true.” Except for that thing about Kadir screwing his mother. That was probably a lie. Maybe. The jury is still out. “I think you would fit in quite well there, from what I've seen the students seem... well, they're young and dumb and eager to prove themselves, as all teenagers are.”

She's glaring at you by the time you've finished speaking, but quickly grows lost in thought. She doesn't think very long though. It's only a few moments before she tentatively gives her answer. “We should check Licae for my mother. If she is not there, I do not think this Academy sounds so terrible. Perhaps if I find it not as you described I may decide living with one of your kind-” Your kind? What's that supposed to mean? “-wouldn't be so bad.”

You step outside, staring in what you're relatively certain is a northwesterly direction. Licae should just be a more or less straight shot down the road, if you recall correctly there's a sign at a fork which marks one road to Licae and the other to Anthus. It seems like so long ago that you traveled down that road with Chryssa, but you suppose it was really only a month. How time flies when you're constantly in mortal peril.

Speaking of Chrys, you should probably update her on the situation. Then again, maybe it'd be best to just leave her in the dark? She did, after all, tell you to just come home rather than risk your life checking bodies in the village. She probably wouldn't really blame you if she later found out her husband just so happened to be in Polop during the attack. Regardless, it'll be nice to get an update regarding the home front.

Prodding the connection afforded to you by the brooches, you feel her thoughts brush against yours. {I've rescued a peasant girl who I found fleeing from a pack of twisted mutant dragons. They walked upon two legs and their wings, and they had long necks and mouths bristling with misaligned teeth. Anyway, I've saved a number of specimens, most likely dead by this point, for Fulvia, Mortia, and Skull Kid to study. How have things been with Zahak, yourself, and the others?}

Her response is careful, you'd even go as far as saying she's measuring each word judging by the hesitation in her voice. {Things have been well. Zahak has learned some basic healing magic and seems to advancing at an almost exponential rate now that your Master has begun to tutor him alongside Mortia. He is improving in Nature and Earth magic as well. Personally I have been pursuing my studies in Earth magic, though I've dabbled in Nature and Fire magic as well. I took Zahak hunting the other night and he seemed quite pleased. He caught some manner of large reptile which he said tasted very good. I praised him suitably for his catch.}
(1/3)
>>
She pauses, though you feel the thoughts swirling through your own mind as she considers what next to say. {Darzi has been having a lot of trouble advancing any further. She gets horrible headaches when she attempts to meditate on one of the elements. She has been reading though. Profectus found Tertia, and she agreed to live on the estate though she does not wish to travel. She has been teaching Profectus about his arm, last that we heard from him. Apparently dragon activity has been increasing in the mountains, but they've had no trouble so far.}

You catch a glimpse of fleeting memories, vague images of the recent past you presume. {Thaddeus has been working on a project in his tower. He's found a plate of strange metal full of wires and he's hooked it up, with some difficulty, to his gauntlet. When it's touched by vys, the armor projects a field of energy around the wearer which seems penetrable only with tremendous force applied to a small area. I was able to knock him unconscious, but even I found it mildly difficult to do so. The gauntlet has also maintained its ability to fire burst of vys at range. He said to thank you for the gift of the “Gadget-Bot”.}

There's a long pause, she seems to be struggling to think of what else to say. Finally you're flooded with a sense of relief, and she speaks. {Ah, right. Mortia has made good progress under the tutelage of your Master. She has grown rapidly into a capable Nature Vatis and has started to advance in Water as well. Was there anything else you wished to discuss?}

You think you've come to a decision regarding her husband. {Yes, actually. I scried your husband and found that he's still alive. The city of Polop is besieged by a combined force of Elves and those raiders from the north, the Voibardians I believe it was? He seems to be performing admirably, and he may just survive the siege. What would you have me do?}

(2/3)
>>
Her thoughts become a maelstrom of indecision but when next her voice drifts through your mind it is resolute. {I have been thinking about this issue for the past several days and I feel I have reached a decision. It would not be appropriate for me to push for a relationship which not only goes against your customs but may also end with your forcibly cut off from your friends and family, or worse, killed.} There's a pause before she continues speaking. {Thus I ask that you return to the estate, and I apologize for my past actions. I will not seek to force you into an unwanted relationship.}

You really, really weren't expecting that. You were expecting her to either tell you it's not important or tell you to go kill the bastard, not renounce her courtship of you entirely. It seems like a bit of an overreaction. It actually sort of hurts, though you'd be loathe to admit that. Your throat is suddenly horribly dry and your gut has twisted itself into a painful knot. Then again, perhaps you ought to be relieved, rather than upset? She's right, after all. Pursuing anything could have gotten you killed.

>Tell her that she's overreacting, you honestly don't mind her affections.
>Insist on going to kill her husband.
>Eh, it's for the best. Thank her for being understanding and get going already.

If you want a shitstorm then have us in a perilous situation choosing between saving either Chryssa, Zahak, Skull Kid or Darzi, with only the time and ability to save one of them.

Or, y'know, just wait to see who we take to the Pa'vala with us and that will be that.

Why the fuck is Skullkid working on his dumb armor instead of working on our water farm like proper tech slave should?

Get our Grand master robes

With rank + money coming in from every where.
Buy all the land we can possibly with out stiring any trouble among the other nobles.
And wreck shit.
Wouldn't mind just leaving Fulvia in charge of the lands we own. Seems like she would do a great job. And we could repurpose her focus of reviving her people into just building a great empire in our name. While we gather more fortunes and fame so she can manage basically an empire.

Don't forget that the crazy wizard who rescued her is the one that actually caused her hometown to be destroyed. So if she wanted to seek retribution she'd have to go after us, the person she apprenticed to.

What was Stargate like before the metaplot.

we're doing this at the university tho
and isn't Fulvia on a the path of going evil insane, she's been acting weird anyways
>>
>>39836846
It was like military science fiction dungeon delving, but with Stargates leading to new worlds instead of new dungeons. Wacky adventures and episodes that were short & sweet.
To be fair there are still some episodes like that even after the metaplot stuff, but they're interspersed asthough they're only supposed to be a spice for a shitty main dish of MUH SPINESNAKES and MUH ANOOBIS and MUH ORI and whatever the fuck the other fuckers were.
>>
>>39836917
The University's robes don't do anything, we need the robes from our city in order to get the Grandmaster Vatis income from the state.
>>
>>39836978
This
>>
>>39836904
Overarching plot would be a more fitting term actually. It got stronger while everything else either got weaker or slightly more forgotten. The actor got the character development he asked for, with the whole Ancestors nonsense, while everything else in the series suffered for it.

Years later and I'm still saltier about it than a cowlick.

Mostly their library in case we need to borrow/ buy more books there. And didn't we have to travel to Anthus in the fist place because they had a scroll on Vys that we knew was there?

Besides we already set a date for this previously so it's a moot point.

>Implying it's a waste of time
Sorry Anon but I disagree with that.
>>
>>39836719
>thinks
>>
i'm just gonna go ahead and post this again
i say we start buying up large areas of useless land that won't be useless after we have access to all that water and i also think we should look for a way to restore our family fleet, perhaps by starting up a logging company? and if we restore the fleet or make it even bigger + buying up all or most of the future farmland + taking over the whole or close to whole water market will make our family the most powerful one in the country
the influence we can get from that could be used to speed SKs research up and the we ask him for something anti air, something simple as a cannon could be effective if we enchant it and have SK make explosive cannon balls or we can have him look into filling the with liquid nitrogen
and if we research the enchantments on the trident and then apply them to the cannon balls i think we'll stand a pretty good chance
and if that isn't enough it might buy SK enough time to make something more modern
the trident got more powerful when vys was used on it so if SK was to hook up on of those self sustaining lantern mechanisms to a cannon ball with the same enchantments i think the dragon would be pretty dead
>>
1. get to the Shah and get rights to buy land
2. buy cheap farmland(which is cheap due to the scarcity/price of water)
3. while our father and SK works on the water plant we can either start by getting our GM robes or start by traveling to buy wood which we for the most part use to build up our family's fleet but can also be sold to finance the purchase of even more farmland(personally i'd like to buy it all for maximum money gains and pop growth)
4. finance SK anti air research for dragon protection
5. ???
6. profit
>>
>>39837982
Alright.
>>
>>39837731
>>39837982
Alright geez it's a good idea, happy now? We should encourage our friends to become landowners as well.
>>
Rolled 5, 8, 10 = 23 (3d10)

Rolling for Nat 3.
>>
>>39838155
Some day.
>>
>>39838079
i was reposting it so that i wouldn't have scroll up and then refined it a bit
yeah, we might not be able to afford all of it unless we sell wood(which we import tax free through the cloak) but even then they should buy some and then set up a company(we'll hold the most shares obviously since we will have the most land) and then use slaves and animals as farm labor and later on SK might have some more modern inventions to help out. our father could do the actual selling(so that our fam get's money as well)
and the thought of that might fleet bring me great joy
