You have always wanted to be an emperor. That ambition has burned dimly in the past, tempered by reality. Now the opportunity to realise your ambition has arrived and you are determined not to let it slip. Now is the time to build your empire and become an emperor.

Last Thread: You are Imperator Talon York and you rule your own small empire, but you are not yet the emperor you dream of being… yet. Last thread you discussed children, reconstruction and how to deal with an alliance of fluffy tails.

“Are you sure you want to contact these monks?” Mal asks you as he fiddles with the sending device. “They’re a shady lot. I’m not sure we should become anymore involved with them, unless we have to.”

You frown at that, unwilling to ignore Mal’s warning but also believing it’s a bit overstated. The two of you are sitting in one of the smaller meeting rooms to have a private conversation with the head of the monk order in Basilii – or to at least try. Sylph sits between the two of you, humming to herself as she sway back and forth.

Your chance to respond to Mal is denied as the device suddenly crackles to life and makes the sending connection. The voice responding is clearly that of the same woman you spoke to during the invasion of Shropham and you explain your plan.

“What need would I have of another large monastery so close?” she asks, her tone questioning rather than dismissive. “I have my home here in Basilii as well as stations near Farun and Worremburg. Why would I need a larger one close to Harrowmont?”

“Well, there was an army of demons that came through of late,” you say, trying to kindle her interest.

“An interesting and frightening prospect to be sure, but a little out of our purview,” she says. “Well done on routing them but that is only to be expected from those who wish to hold power against those who wish to take it from them.”

You blink, taken aback at how quickly the head of the order dismisses the demonic invasion. Having thought that her interests aligned with those of Raphael or Sylvian, you’re not sure what to make of this. Sylvian had been little help, knowing little of the specifics of the order and only that they actively fought spirit beasts and similar threats.

>How will you convince the head of the order of monks to help you?
>>
Offer her a seat on our council? Give her order some word in the country they occupy? Influence spreads through words, having their own say might help the order grow and give them further reach then one so close.
>>
Offer resources to help with the monster slaying. I'm not really sure what they want or need.
>>
>>39836135
"My lands, and my Capitol, will be the center of what will become a powerful Imperium, with the ability to influence and direct the rest of Gauron. My empire will be the center of all coordinated resistance to external threats, such as demons, and will eventually be positioned to address the issue of the spirit beasts in a manner that eliminates them as a threat.

A monastery here and now would enable your people to be at the heart of this empire, and woukd be to the mutual benefit of our long term objectives."
>>
Recruits? Public endorsement? The new monastery seems more of a formality then anything, it's presence alone will give the order a nice little boost.
>>
we need to consider why they helped us before.
was it because of a general threat?
a ideological hate of the curse weapons?
was what strohpram created monsters of a kind that they hunt or did it have something to do with it relating ton another of the 4 old races or was it because it was from outside the continent?

I’m just going to move on given the tepid response.

>You don’t convince her

“Having a significant site for your order nearby would assist me and surely yourself. You or your representative could become involved in the governance, or to at least have some word in the empire. Surely having more power to protect people would be of interest to you?” you say.

A sigh comes over the device. “Power is the exact opposite of what we wish to have. Our role is not to rule, govern or influence but merely to protect. Further, I have all the influence I need – should matters arise that concern me then I can merely contact yourself or other sympathetic ears. If that is not enough, well… that is why my brother and I exist.”

“I see. I didn’t exactly expect this,” you say, lost for words. “Your order seemed to take a more proactive role from what I could see.”

“Parts of it do, and those are already present in your domain. The others have a greater role,” she says. “Should you actually have something of interest to me, feel free to contact me again.”

With those words the sending device goes dead. Mal gives you a grimace.

“That was short,” you say.

“But certainly not sweet,” he says. “I think she was expecting something more if you directly contacted her.”

>Dwarves next. Will post a recap of what happened during negotiations last time
>>
Wait... What do they define as monsters? Would our Vampires count, the Nightwalkers have that bestial form. That might be conflicting.

>dorf recap

Okay, so ideas to present [in exchange for returning the dwarven artifact weapons] are:
1. A runesmith or two. This would let you outfit a large-ish unit of elite knights, but not much more. (Easy.)
2. Opening up the market for enchanted weaponry and armour. (Easily possible, as a trade like this would be more than enough to make you a valued trade partner.)
3. Honor guard of rune-knights. (Difficult trade. Rune-knights aren't exactly plentiful, and they would have to poach a group of individuals from a variety of units to put together a willing group.)
4. More IEC teams. (Easy for another two.)

Logreb is adamant that you won't be allowed an artificer or forge technology, but says he will present the ideas to his king nevertheless. It's probably not the first time somebody has ever asked for that sort of thing.

I might do this as a long-ish scene involving visiting the dwarven capital (briefly, not an extended visit) so no decisions made yet.

>recap of the last dorf update

Logreb gives you a deep bow after the lengthy discussion. “I will speak to my Princeps upon return and give him the good news that a trade is possible. Something as grandiose an event as the return of so many artifacts will assuredly need a full ceremony, so I will do my best to remain in touch and keep you aware of when we shall arrange it.”

You see Logreb off with your thanks, before sinking into your chair. “Well, at least we don’t need to haggle with him now. Unfortunately, we need to haggle with the ruler of all dwarves later.”

Rune knights are kinda pointless in small numbers. They aren't enough better than daefir Or vamps

We should bring them a finely enchanted gift straight from Mal. Something dwarves would like. In response to their shield they gave Talon.

And we need to visit their statue of Gnome, that should be a good laugh.

>Dwarven capital visit

“You’re visiting the dwarves? It seems strange to go to them to give them back their weapons,” Taira says, lounging on your bed in a dishevelled state after interrupting your preparations. “And why didn’t you tell me you were going?”

You pause in the middle of dressing (again). “I did tell you. I told everybody more than a week ago that Princeps Maiol had set a date for a formal ceremony to return the weapons after negotiations.”

“I don’t remember anything like that.”

“You were literally sitting in my lap at the time. How do you miss news like that?”

“I was preoccupied.”

You sigh. “Well, you don’t have to come-“

“Why can’t I come? I want to see the dwarven city – I’ve heard amazing things about them,” she says, the room filling with the noise of her tails rustling as she gets excited.

Steadfastly ignoring her, at least until she tries to follow you out of the room without getting dressed, you proceed to check up on the others. Gnome and the other elementals are all ready, insofar as they actually need to get ready, but you’re uncertain about whether some of the others will come. It might be easier to leave some behind, as the dwarves have keen eyes for magic and Logreb has already been making notes of the various magical beings surrounding you. Bringing along a former mystic fox empress or an up-and-coming dragon queen could send the wrong message.

Or perhaps it would be the right message. The dwarves would appreciate the news that you’re supporting non-human races within your empire, particularly given your obvious ambitions of expansion. The problem is that once they know, the long reach of their ambassadors means plenty of other nations will also know.

We give them Pattern Falcons. For ranging. I guess.

I don't know, I feel like we never put much thought into this. But then Noble Knights only really seem to have better personal magic (and that isn't even universal), and a higher budget for their weaponry and armor. If anything they're a dying breed in warfare and seem to be more of a "guild" for warriors to hold political power comparable to mages. We might have made a mistake creating the Rangers at all.
>>

>But then Noble Knights only really seem to have better personal magic (and that isn't even universal), and a higher budget for their weaponry and armor.
Also known as the two things that make up a combatants fighting ability, along with martial skill, which they are also better at.
>>
>>39837926

But we can get further with putting that money into say HMK and training them like Knights. Hell the DracoGriffs (sans Phrace and Rayza) pretty much define that. The Noble Knight itself is slowly being outclassed by it's mass producible derivatives to the point where they won't be cost effective.

They are actually getting a significant upgrade soon. Due to Dorfs, Elves and the source.
>>
>>39838058
Upgrades that cost money though. That is what this is coming down to, for me at least. Is there a point where we reach diminishing returns in how much we pump into maintaining Noble Knights relevancy on the battlefield?

Note, I'm actually not against Noble Knights or anything, I've been voting to create more Orders in Harrowmont for awhile. I just thought this was a point to be made.

>Bring all

The trip to the dwarven capital of Torphenstammen is a long one, and the canal only shortens the trip by a short time by allowing quick transit to Lyss. On the plus side, your imperial barge had allowed for a rather pleasant trip. From arrival in Lyss it was a much longer trip using powered carriages across Norsborough.

“Hail, Imperator Talon,” the League spellblade says to you as you greet him on the road. “General Mercenie has requested we accompany you to Cartollstin. The front with the Seraphs has been quiet but Falwick is unpredictable.”

You accept the escort, realising it’s mostly a formality. A couple dozen spellblades wouldn’t stop a true assault but you would be more than capable of doing so yourself. Rather, Merce was ensuring that you were untroubled as you travelled through Norsborough with the York Empire emblem on all your carriages. The plans for a formal alliance with the mages were proceeding apace but until they were finalised and Alyce’s leadership shored up, anything involving you would remain a risk.

The sight of mountains was a welcome one by the end of the long trip, signalling an end to the almost month long journey. Better yet was the sight of the magnificent fortress of Cartollstin – Logreb had described it as a ‘fantastic example of fortress design’ and you could not help but agree. The mountain had been cut sheer all around it, a concave of flat rock hundreds of metres in height preventing any easy access from above. The fortress itself jutted out from the cliffs in three tiers, with blocky fortress walls as tall and strong as those in Harrowmont running alongside the outer perimeter and forming the outer tier. Enormous square towers stood even further above them, containing the same anti-siege foundations that you used in Harrowmont.

The outer gate was immensely imposing, large enough to fit a column of soldiers through it without any trouble and an airlock design of dual steel gates, glimmering with dwarven runes, stood as proof of the difficulty anybody would have in breaching it. Several rows of ten metre ditches ran along the approach to the walls, with only the wooden bridge to the gate being usable in your carriages. Once inside, the dwarven and human guards greeting you with salutes and loud clatters of fists on metal armour, an enormous bulwark of stone towered above you and the tunnel further in. The keep stood as high as the square towers of the outer wall but was a solid mass of stone built into the cliff, making Harrowmont appear so much smaller, even if your keep was much wider than this one.

Above it were a pair of what appeared to be towers or keeps jutting out of the cliffs without any ground supports, likely only accessible from within the keep. Murder holes, balconies for fire support and even what appeared to be egress points for ladder descent lined each of them. Even once the outer wall and courtyard was lost there would still be a nigh unassailable defence available. Beneath the keep itself and directly in front of you was another steel gate, covered in reinforced beams and protected by a pair of portcullises. To breach this would be a feat in and of itself.

“Imperator Talon, if you’d be pleased to greet Watch Commander Targren he would be most honoured,” Logreb tells you. “Daime, too, given his unit of knights serves here. It will be a short while before we can proceed, I suspect, as the knights need to ensure the tunnel roads and caverns are safe for transit first.”

You…

Aw yeah son dwarven architecture. Time to get some new ideas.
>>
>>39838099
This is correct. It's one of the big things that I noticed with our armies.

Knights while powerful tend to in the long scale not be as useful as having RSK style Mage-knights+High mage support.

It's one of the reasons a trade deal with the dwarves here will be useful. Because if we can get a runesmith+ability to buy Dwarven arms. Then we can get our royal order up to par for free and use the armor and weapons we buy as a carrot for our knight orders.

Kind of a "You show loyalty to the empire and we buy you Dwarven armor and weapons as gifts."

Then after that go deep into Patterns and Magi-tech and use the knights as the elite smashers.
>>
>>39838428
Alright I can see where you're going with that thought process. Though it may lead down a path where we have less Orders, but the few we do are top notch Elites with the political clout to match.

I rather like that more then having a bunch of small Orders that only fill in numbers and would be more cost efficient in its own way.

This whole thought though still leaves us with the Rangers. They seem to serve no purpose, if we intend to make them as functional as Orders then they need to be given the upgrades, improvements and resources necessary to do so.
>>

>They seem to serve no purpose, if we intend to make them as functional as Orders then they need to be given the upgrades, improvements and resources necessary to do so.
You really haven't been paying attention to the siege, have you. They're plenty useful. Same with the knights.
>>
>>39838600
>Though it may lead down a path where we have less Orders, but the few we do are top notch Elites with the political clout to match.

My main idea is the very elite orders like the Golden bears and the royal order get empire sponsorship via dwarven goods and the likes. Other orders would exist but until they prove their loyalty they aren't really so much on the radar.

>This whole thought though still leaves us with the Rangers. They seem to serve no purpose, if we intend to make them as functional as Orders then they need to be given the upgrades, improvements and resources necessary to do so.

Personally I've always felt rangers where more or less just a method of advancement for Arcane Archers not to feel left out from advancement into higher tiers.

Other then getting them better equipment about the only thing I can think of to do with them is make them more like the empires special forces. Train them in food foraging and on hit and runs.
>>
>>39838677
I didn't mean that in an entirely literal way. They serve purpose, but functionally in the Battle Calculator they are no more then fancy AAs. And our AAs, while serving their role, didn't punch as much of a hole into the demons as they do man, I assumed the same could be said of our Rangers. Of which I don't even remember specific mention outside of a covering retreat option.

And I'm well aware of our Knights usefulness, but what was that born of in this case? A weighted need for more "elite" units that could hold the lines of varying demons and transition into different roles as needed. If we had instead a mass of HMK that were Veteran/Elite status would they not have served the same purpose? Our Green NHMK served a relatively same purpose, though they get away with with it via vampiric magic. They are functional, yes. They have purpose, yes. But at what cost and under what definitions?

Do note that the Rangers are significantly more capable then AA's are, since they can hurt greater demons while AA's struggle with lesser ones
>>39838776

You meet with Targren, the dwarven commander of the fortress, and discuss the fortress and your business in Torphenstammen. The fortress itself is the product of an alliance between humans and dwarves from centuries past and the magic within the stone, combined with constant vigilance on the part of dwarven and mage maintainers, has ensured it remains the primary means of defence for the Sithran mountains for large columns of invaders. Only the shadow-beasts have ever managed a large-scale invasion, due to their uncanny ability to swarm in through other, smaller entrances in the mountains. After a few hours, the rune-knights of the fortress return to inform you that the immediate path is clear of foes.

“It’s almost two days travel to the city. Sir Daime knows the way and you should encounter patrols from outposts on the way,” the knight captain tells you. “Be careful with your carriages near winding descents as we have witnessed many perilous crashes due to self-propulsion.”

The first day of travel is uneventful, apart from the observance of the amazing work the dwarves have put into the tunnels. They’re practically cavernous, with strong stone supports lining the walls and ceilings as you steadily descend for much of the first day, crossing bridges through caverns and underground rivers along the way. The second day results in an encounter with the first of the dwarven bulwarks between the outside and the city. The cavernous tunnel is occupied nearly to the ceiling with an enormous stone wall and it bristles with holes for archers and plenty of room to mount siege weapons atop it. Passing through, you find yourself at the first of many winding descents around caverns and mining shafts, with several directions to go in.

“The bulwarks mark the official domain of the dwarven cities,” Gnome explains. “They close off all ways in and out with fortresses and build their roads, cities and mines within. They used to only do so to ward off the outside but they even wall off the underground entrances since the shadowbeasts occupied the lower levels of the mountain’s cave structure.”

“So the mountains are filled with one continuous cave structure?” you ask, sceptical.

“Not always, but between the dwarves and spirit beasts it is now,” she answers. “The best sources of the indestructible metal ores are deep underground and are a valuable input into quality dwarven steel.”

You stop for a rest and talk with…

Honestly with the siege it was more the hero units along with the elves and vampires and LMK's that did the most damage.

Personally for me I think the ideal military strategy so far is something like.

Get hyper elite knights as killer units. Use the Arcane Archers+Siege archers+Foxes to keep most foes air power and ranged power down.

Use mages as the battle field needs.

Build the core of our armies around using combined arms with mage-knights and high spell power.

Then use our other races like dragon knights and vampires as needed. This way no matter what we always have an army core that is useful even if we don't have any Elves or vampires or whatever.

Then go deep into patterns and summoning and the likes in order to continue to build more and more efficient magic troops. That way we can use the demon armies "This bastards just won't die!" Tactics along with units with perfect morale.

Well obviously, otherwise we wouldn't have formed them. They have narrative weight, but in the, assumedly obsolete ranged tab they are still functionally AAs from a stat line perspective. And I've never seen anyone take any steps towards improving that. That being said, if we outfitted them with dwarven gear, I can see some sort of benefit to it.

>My main idea is the very elite orders like the Golden bears and the royal order get empire sponsorship via dwarven goods and the likes. Other orders would exist but until they prove their loyalty they aren't really so much on the radar.
Alright, so more in line with how Aspirational wanted to change up how the "leveling" up system worked in regards to units. We maintain our Noble Knight statline, and gain the "elite units" under state sponsorship to be deployed as necessary. I would still maintain that this might mean the death of small Orders as it might begin to encourage Orders to cannibalize others for their higher ups, equipment, and political power in a bid to seem more useful to the Empire at large. But that remains to be seen.

I enjoy this conversation. About damn time we talked about some of this stuff.

Steel is better in this timeline though, and it wasn't always perfectly effective.

>Alright, so more in line with how Aspirational wanted to change up how the "leveling" up system worked in regards to units. We maintain our Noble Knight statline, and gain the "elite units" under state sponsorship to be deployed as necessary.

Yeah basically. The main thing is to foster competition because with that the order gains access to the empires dwarven goods and other benefits.

>it might begin to encourage Orders to cannibalize others for their higher ups, equipment, and political power in a bid to seem more useful to the Empire at large.

That honestly wouldn't be all that bad in the long term. The more we can refine the noble knights the more effective they are as elite troops for Talon. I'd much rather have 4-10 large elite orders then 15-20 smaller orders.
>>
>>39839202
So if steel is better, is it really implausible, or unfeasible, that the construction of bows and arrows is also improved?
>>
>>39839109
At absurdly close range.

Most of the time in those wars the french died more from the masses of arrows going into the eye slights and shoulders then from it punching though steelplate.
>>
>>39839248
Not at all. But absent magic (represented by AA's) increased material quality favors defense over offense in muscle powered situations.
>>
>>39839196
I'm hoping for an improvement time pow-wow during the numbers thread where we can throw all of our ideas at Aspir and he can veto/okay them all and we can finally craft something usable. Now would seem to be the time to do it.
>>
>>39839251
Fair enough, but penetrations could and would occur at ranges, even if uncommon.

>>39839279
Not entirely true, but they would need modern bows to make up for the difference in power that needs to be cleared, so I agree.

Still, it is Aspie's setting, and if he wants his bows to bust plate, go for it, even if it is a bit silly.
>>
>>39839342
>Still, it is Aspie's setting, and if he wants his bows to bust plate, go for it, even if it is a bit silly.

I was always of the assumption that is what AAs did to MMK. Which was why it was so powerful in the first place. Granted it came with a lot of magic on bow and arrow and some suit enchantments, but still. And then the Siege Archers were meant to kill HMK, but yet again granted they are using big ass magic crossbows.
>>
>>39839399
Nice dubs.

What I want is to build a giant pattern, that uses a fahkhueg version of AA bows and arrows.
>>
>>39839399
Pretty much. As long as someone isn't head to toe defended in enough numbers AA can probably kill it.

AA are a lot more efficient with Siege archers though. Just because one clears the battle field and the other clears anything that is still standing due to armor.
>>
>>39839492
Honestly for me I think we have good enough ranged right now.

For a first pattern I would suggest something Efficient, Simple to upgrade and good at the basics. Killing the other guy.

Spending the break time with Sylvian and Taira ends up almost exactly how you expected. Taira smothers you with her tails, demanding them to be stroked, whilst Syl gets a little too close for comfort for during travel. On the plus side, they are at least interested in talking about what’s happening instead of just flirting.

“It seems strange that the dwarves all want to live underground,” Taira says, rubbing against your chest as you stroke her golden tails. “If they’re so good at smithing why don’t they use it to take back territory above ground instead of banishing themselves down here?”

“Because they’re not banished,” Syl says, absently stroking Taira’s tails after watching you do so. “Dwarves don’t need sunlight like humans do and their personal preferences favour them being surrounded by as much earth and stone as possible.”

“So, what, they’re agoraphobic?” Taira asks. “No wonder they can’t conquer anything.”

“Given they held off the God-Knights during the Great War, I have my doubts about that. Logreb also seems convinced they’re rebuilding nicely from the losses during the shadowbeast invasion,” you say. “I suspect it’s just that they prefer to be underground. It’s not like you need to compete with anybody apart from each other.”

Sylvian nods with a smile. “That’s exactly it. The dwarves don’t compete like that – it’s not in their nature. So long as I can remember they’ve always worked cooperatively, far more so than the elves who like to think of themselves as a united race. Each mountain range has a council that represents its cities and there was an overarching racial federation that represented all the mountain ranges that the dwarves occupied. Even within the cities, it’s about cooperation, though it’s done in an odd way that I don’t quite understand.”

“The whole ‘nobody actually owns anything’ concept?” you say, frowning at the thought of it.

“Exactly. Each dwarf works for the common good and is rewarded according to their ability. Mages have been expecting it to collapse for centuries, particularly due to the way that dwarven society always appears to be undergoing some form of major disruption, but they’ve always made the choice to stick together instead of rebel,” she says.

“Hmm, wouldn’t you just rise to a powerful position and then just refuse to play along? If you’re that important then you should have negotiating power,” Taira says, rubbing her chin.

You shake your head, already having discussed this with Gnome and Logreb. “There’s nothing the dwarves seem to hate more than those that don’t work with the system. Logreb seems to speak of those who attempt to gain power beyond what their society allows in the same way he speaks of the non-working underclass. They’d probably just exile anybody that went against the system.”

“Smart,” Taira says, nodding. “I had to do the same thing with some powerful foxes during my reign. Like Imira. Most of them just joined the Imperial Court, however.”

You mount up on the carriages to undergo the last stretch of the trip. Joining you are…

It's actually kind of dumb, way, way back when we were deciding on our flag the suggestion was made of "something with talon's, like Talon!" Because we're clever. The options became Griffon or Dragons, and we've been here ever since.

As for the fixation on them, they seem to have become Talon's calling card. Uses them a lot for the mage's summons and decorative purposes like the fountain and at one point he had the nickname "The Griffon in the East". It just became a cool imagery and people wanted actual Griffons to go along with it. Aspir mentioned at one point he was still trying to decide whether or not to give us living ones or just pattern versions, and I think at this point we've all decided to go for the patterns, unless something else shows up beforehand.

“So have you thought about what presents you’ll buy for Neir and Marle yet, Mal?” you ask your friend as you absently stroke Tsucchi’s tails, ignoring the look she gives you for doing so in the carriage.

“Something that he can’t swallow, preferably,” Mal says. “Neir wants some jewellery, which is easy enough down here.”

“I don’t see her wearing much,” you say.

“She doesn’t, but they’re useful as spell foci and catalysts,” he says. “She’s been focusing on her studies more along with Sarah and has been bothering me for something that she can effectively use for casting that isn’t a staff.”

“We should get Marle a ring,” Sylph says suddenly.

Mal stares at her flatly, to which Sylph merely shrugs with a smile. Tsucchi takes the opportunity to slink a little closer to you and one of her tails slinks around your back.

“He’s one, Sylph. What would he do with a ring beyond suck on the finger it’s on?” he asks.

“It’ll be a long-term present. I’ve heard that the dwarves make rings that resize to match the finger so if you make an enchanted one he could use it for life,” Sylph says, rubbing one of her fingers as she talks.

The two bicker a bit over the possible gift and you stay well out of it. Sylph had already bothered you enough about her problems with children and you didn’t want to wade into her proxy-parenting.

Suddenly, light bursts into the carriage and you realise that you’ve exited the tunnel you were in. Leaning out the front, you get your first glimpse of the dwarven capital of Torphenstammen.

The city fills a cavern far, far larger than you thought possible to exist. Far above you glow numerous lights along the ceiling that show pathways running just below the cavern ceiling. They criss-cross between overlooks and enormous upside-down ziggurats that are built into the ceiling. Hanging greenery and what appear to be greenhouses line many of the overlooks and pathways, connected to aqueduct systems.

On more level ground, you see that there are two other gatehouses out of the city, beyond the one you are coming through. One is on the same level you are on, at 2 o’clock relative to your position, and the other sits below, slightly closer. An enormous causeway runs directly across the city from your position, with ringed stone arches supporting it as it stands some five or six storeys high. At the far end is an enormous tiered structure, with defensive walls and palace-like structures dotting it. All around the cavern walls are similar buildings, bustling with activity but somehow less grandiose than the first you saw. Many other towers, rise from the causeway, including a particularly large one at the intersection in the centre of the city.

But below you is a different story from the grand structures you’ve seen so far, being a dense stone jungle filled with an enormous variety of construction. From slum-like shanty town stretches to grand villas and highways lined with shops, the cavern floor of the city is home to most of the dwarves, including the non-working underclass. A bright red glow from a particularly empty section marks the restricted zone that leads down to the great forges and smithies of the dwarves, with towers and walls controlling access and numerous armed dwarves alert.

“Welcome to Torphenstammen, Imperator Talon,” booms the voice of a finely dressed dwarf, approaching you from one of the buildings in the gatehouse. “If you’ll accept our honourable escort we shall lead you to your lodgings for your stay. Princeps Maiol will be delighted at your early arrival.”

You try to avoid gawking at your surroundings as you travel across the causeway to the palace but soak it all in regardless. Your lodgings are certainly not lacking in taste, either, as you’re led to what appears to be a manor at the top of the palace structure. As you wait for your invitation to see the princeps you lean against the balcony railing and look over the city, the calm trickle of the water fountain along the wall behind you ever present.

You decide to ignore the fleeing figure, as you likely won’t catch it if it can teleport. Instead you investigate the letter, opening it after you confirm there is no magic. Inside is a small piece of paper and a lock of bronze-coloured hair with what appears to be a preservation spell on it. The paper says:

‘Your interactions with non-humans are being noted. If you continue as you are, the day will come when the price they pay will be far greater than just this hair.’

The language is clearly from Malataine, and written in a beautiful but functional cursive that speaks of a lot of time spent writing. You don’t know exactly whose hair this is, but given the colour, the fact it’s from Malataine and was given to you, you’re pretty sure it’s Finn’s. The truly odd part is that you don’t know if you’re being threatened or merely warned what your behaviour will cause.

>meeting the princeps

“It must quite an honour to have your statue right outside the princeps’ own residence, Gnome,” you say to your familiar, gazing up at the statue of her.

The statue itself looks to be about three times scale, and if formed from a range of different stones and metals to achieve a variety of colours with no painting involved. It’s an amazing feat to create something so large and detailed, with the face itself looking almost exactly like hers as it gazes up at the central ziggurat on the ceiling. It’s just a shame a few of the other proportions are off.

“It must also be an honour that they made your chest as big as your head,” Taira says, grinning. “I know they’re huge but this is something completely different.”

“Or did your chest simply get smaller after they made the statue?” Rayza asks with a completely straight face.

Blushing a vivid red, Gnome clenches her gauntleted fists, just like the statue is doing. “It emphasises the motherly aspect of being earth elementals,” she grinds out. “They even Laryya’s chest that big, even though they made her statue when she much younger.”

“In other words, the dwarves have good taste,” you say as you resume walking to the manor itself.

“Bad Talon,” Lynn and Taira say together.

Princeps Maiol himself is a tall dwarf, though still shorter than Lynn, and is dressed rather comfortably and he greets you with a strong handshake. “Imperator Talon, it’s an honour to have you here. I had hoped you would come here in person and I see you’ve brought an interesting set of companions.”

We probably will need to do it via email, yeah. I had hoped to have some more in the thread but oh well. I'll try to respond to your current email tonight - I've been snowed under with work and applications.

Sorry that it disappointed. I wanted to at least try to squeeze in some entertaining scenes with the other characters but even that sort of stuff was getting no response and continuing will just make things worse.

Well, who actually wants to stick around to do SoL scenes?

They won't be anything serious but I'm willing to at least try a scene and see if it works despite the rest of the thread being a wreck. I feel bad for stopping early otherwise.

If there's no support for them (i.e. votes) then I'll see you all when I run the next thread.

“I think you all need to handle your alcohol better,” you say to the trio of drunkards in your study.

“I’ve handled my alcohol just fine,” Rayza protests, talking over the top of the elf in her lap.

The two of you stare at short but drunk chatterboxes in your laps. You’d scheduled a talk with Rayza about her future as a potential dragon queen after a talk with Caitlyn about her order and had somehow wound up with two flirty drunkards in your study instead.

“Caitlyn, maybe you should get some rest,” you tell your grandmaster knight.

“It’s only the afternoon, Talon. If I go to sleep while the other knights are still partying after lunch I’ll be laughed at,” she says, pouting up at you.

“The same goes for you, Finn,” you say, hoping to get at least one of the two out of the room.

“But you’re going to talk to Rayza about having children. I need to be here for that,” he protests.

Once again, you and Rayza stare at your respective problems. Then you both sigh, Rayza hiccupping after doing so. You give her a sceptical look.

“I know that Caitlyn had a boozy lunch but why were you drinking?” you ask her suspiciously.

“Sylvian said you needed to talk to me about Finn having an heir, so I figured to talk to him about it in advance. With lots of liquid courage,” she mutters, looking away.

“Finn having an heir,” you say flatly. “Why does Finn need an heir?”

“Because you won’t stop taking your brew to have kids and Finn is your current heir. Given you both go into battle together, it makes sense to have a successor who isn’t in danger,” she says.

Groaning at the horrible miscommunication that seems to have preceded this meeting, you…

“So, how are you handling Finn? And have you been thinking about your future and what you’ll do?” you ask Rayza, keeping Lynn distracted by petting her head.

You get a scowl from Rayza in return. “Both have become harder lately thanks to you. My future has become more complicated thanks to all the damn dragons around here telling me what to do and Finn now has Esraveel taking a keen interest in him, which means a keen interest in me.”

“How’s she handling the harem situation?” you ask.

“I think she’s more preoccupied with working her way into your harem to care. All she knows is that I’m the dominate female for Finn and likes to talk about how he’s doing,” she says, her voice sickly sweet as she runs her hands through said elf’s ears. “She thinks she’s his mother and is concerned about his health.”

“How have you dealt with that so far?” you ask her, taking the opportunity to retrieve some snacks from the icebox as Lynn rolls onto the floor in her drunken state.

“I told her that she should take lessons from Finn’s father and try to improve his sexual health,” Rayza says. “That made things worse as it involved you in the situation.”

You place a plate full of the chocolate peanut brownies that Taira made on the table and take a few before Rayza can grab any. She nibbles on one as Finn and Lynn take some and continue to chat to each other over their snacks.

“Okay, so Esra is handling the harem well. How about you?” you ask, pouring some of the spiced rum that Fenix had sent you for your birthday earlier this year.

Finn doesn’t understand what having a harem means, as he clearly demonstrated on Valentine’s Day,” she says, smirking as she takes a sip of the rum. “He ‘lined us up’, taking some advice from Vadoric, except we were all fully clothed and he didn’t have the slightest clue what was really meant. Unfortunately, he also doesn’t understand what a harem means so he accepts sexual invitations from everybody who offers.”

“So it’s a blessing and a curse. Who else has joined up?” you ask.

“Taira had a swing, though she lost interest before anything actually happened apparently,” Rayza says, ticking off fingers on her hand. “Laryya appears to be flirting half-heartedly, though I think she’s more interested in you. I’m dead certain that Merce slept with him, though Finn denies it. Lyria has been acting oddly around him, too.”

You skol the rest of your glass of brandy before responding, feeling you need some liquid courage before taking on this.

You protest at the claim, “There hasn’t been anywhere near that many-“

>2.

You decide to change the topic, not wanting to talk much about Lynn’s parentage. How did Rayza even know that Lynn’s father was Lairos, anyway?

“Are you really happy becoming a ‘dragon queen’? You didn’t seem that interested originally,” you say, watching as Lynn wandered over to your ice box to retrieve some more snacks.

“It’s not about whether I’m happy being a ‘queen’ it’s…” Rayza starts to say before trailing off with a sigh.

A brief silence fills the room, broken only by the sound of Lynn rustling through your ice box for something she’s interested. Finn’s fallen asleep in Rayza’s lap and she plays with his bronze hair as she thinks. As you open your mouth to say something to break the awkward silence, Lynn fills it with a cookie and you munch on that and wait for a proper answer.

“I serve you, Talon,” Rayza says eventually, looking you in the eye. “You gave me a chance and protected me when you didn’t have to. I get to fight, train and make friends and allies. In exchange I serve you and help you achieve your ambitions. If I do that by pretending to be a queen, then it’s fine. I’m still doing what I love. Being a puppet queen for you while remaining a knight is something I’m happy to do – it was being a true queen, where I need to manage a nation, conduct diplomacy and other nonsense that I worry about. If I serve you then I don’t need to do that – I know I can trust you to look after dragons and myself, because our interests align.”

The silence resumes after that, but it’s a more companionable one than earlier. After a short while, you bid Rayza goodnight as she carries Finn off to their bedroom.

“She’s got a point,” you say to yourself. “How the hell do I deal with Lairos?”

“I still think that no end of trouble is going to happen from this,” Alyce says to you, glowering at the sight of Merce and Esra happily chattering over the map table. “Not only has bringing a mass of elves here caused racial trouble but the soldiers you sent to Terrnaine will cause me trouble in my negotiations.”

“I thought you were going to lose control of Blacktaffe?” you ask her.

“That’s not decided,” she says sharply. “And I have no intentions of ceasing diplomacy even if it does occur. Giving Alenier her own army will surely just make things more difficult.”

You frown at that, wondering what the hell Alyce was worried about in Terrnaine Forest. You were distracted by Merce calling the two of you to the table excitedly, a chocolate muffin still crammed in her mouth from the plate next to her.

“The dissidents are clearly related to the presence of Disciples of Theros,” Merce says, pointing at glowing blue icons of churches along the borders of Orkney Forest. “Given the way they abandoned their church in Compagnon they might be a little troubled by Talon and certainly dislike the elves. If they’re preaching against them…

The correlation that Merce has found can’t be denied, you feel. The fact that villages and towns without any disciples have much reduced levels of racial hatred towards the elves, as observed by spies from both TYE and the League, is indisputable and consistent. With that said, why are the Disciples of Theros anti-elf?

“It could be that they’re opposing you out of hand,” Alyce says. “They did leave their major church on the east coast in an awful hurry when you conquered Compagnon. This has also gotten much worse since Raphael announced the numbers of soldiers that would be reinforcing the Barrier. I don’t truly understand the fanatics but they’re likely related.”

You sigh, deciding that the mystery wouldn’t be solved anytime soon and instead slumped down on one of Alyce’s couches in her suite. The Archmage and Merce instead focused on the map while Esra gave you an odd look.

“Is there anything troubling you, Talon?” she asks you.

You put on the sappiest and most exaggerated voice possible and say, “Merce doesn’t like her birthday present. She complained about not getting enough attention while I was with Alyce so I gave her something to keep her mind off things.”

That gets an instant response, with Esra making a shocked expression at Merce even as the latter spins around in a fit of rage. By contrast, Alyce mostly looks confused by what’s happening.

“Of course I don’t like the present,” Merce shouts. “You’re the leader of a country and you gave Alyce some handmade chocolate and a bottle of wine and then hand me a sex toy. What am I supposed to think?”

“I was only giving you what you asked for,” you say.

“If it was then I wouldn’t have asked for it to be pink,” she shouts.

“Really? I thought you preferred them to be pink,” Alyce says, before suddenly slapping her hands over her mouth.

There’s a long moment of silence as Esra and Merce stare at the archmage, the latter with pure rage in her eyes. If only she’d been smart enough to keep her mouth shut. In the meantime you…

Real men sit around and watch as their allies have a spat over a sex toy. Specifically, a sex toy that you bought for one of them using advice of the other.

“Alyce, why would you possibly think that I would prefer them to be pink and how could that be relevant now?” Merce asks slowly as Esra moves closer to you.

“What are you getting at Merce? I just thought you liked pink,” Alyce says, resuming a more neutral face after her earlier shocked expression.

“Really? Because none of mine are pink,” comes the reply. “Your reply would explain why Talon would get me one that was pink, however.”

As Merce closes in on a panicking Alyce you feel a hand on top of your head. Esra is looking down at you with a sad expression.

“Pink is a terrible colour, Talon. You should feel bad for not having thought of how it would look in the bedroom,” she says. “For reference, I prefer deeper, cooler shades.”

“That’s… good to know,” you say slowly, having difficulty determining how to respond to this strange situation. “And I only bought pink because Alyce said that was the best colour.”

“Aha! He admits it,” Merce shouts, pointing at you wildly with a manic expression. “Give it up, Alyce!”

“I only told him the colour, not to buy one,” Alyce protests.

“You expect me to believe that,” the Aefir scoffs. “You’re the only one who has used it.”

Another silence descends on the room, broken by you sipping your (terribly brewed) cup of coffee. Eventually you realise all eyes on you. You…

You finish your coffee and place the cup and the saucer on the coffee table. The spoon clinks together against the crockery as you do so, seeming to signal to the others that you’re going to seriously respond to them. Merce watches with a triumphant expression and Alyce with an embarrassed one.

“You know, Alyce,” you start to say, ignoring the sharp intake of breathe by the archmage, “you really need to find somebody who can actually make coffee. I offer you the finest brew on the east of the continent, using select beans from the most exclusive plantations I control in Corrustun and crafted with love and care. You offer me something that Undine would make me on the side.”

“I think you should apologise to Undine about that,” Esra says.

Ignoring her familiar, Alyce replies directly with a tart tone, “Well, I’m sorry but my servants have difficulty believing me when I explain to them that you were the one who made it. They’re insistent that what you make is low-class sludge and that only unrefined tastes enjoy it.”

“So you’re saying my tastes are unrefined?” you ask Alyce, giving her a pointed yet disappointed look.

“No, I’m saying that you really need a better way to present your coffee,” she says. “You are still consider a warrior lord, not an artisan.”

“Oh, that’s easy,” you say, waving one hand dismissively. “Just tell them that the finest chef in my empire brews it using the finest coffee beans, etcetera, etcetera. Mention she’s from Pharos, where coffee was originally sourced and I’m sure it will all fall together.”

A hand suddenly slaps down on top of your head and your vision fills with the malignant grin of a certain elf. Merce looks like she’s gone off the deep end as she glares daggers at you from only a few centimetres away.

“Talon, why don’t we return to the topic of your gift,” she grinds out.

“Honestly, Merce, if you’re so unhappy with the colour you could have just said so,” you say. “Undine has some blue ones, I think. Would you prefer one of those?”

“One of Undine’s?” comes the reply in a rather sweet voice. “Why, Talon, how did you know that’s what I always wanted?”

Something tells you that this may have been a mistake in the end.

It’s the middle of the night in Harrowmont and there are two keeps in the inner courtyard. One just happens to look like an enormous dragon, possibly because it is an enormous dragon. Sylvian stretches her wings out, dispelling the illusion and creating waves in the reflection pool in front of the keep in the process.

“Are you sure you don’t have a true draconic form, Caitlyn?” asks Sylvian’s disembodied voice, which seems to carry an artificial timbre similar to that of Caitlyn’s helmet.

Arms crossed and lips pouty, Caitlyn looks up at the ancient helldragon and replies, “Yes, I’m sure. All I have is this transformation. Isn’t this normal for half-breeds like myself?”

Sylvian’s sigh sounds like a small explosion as it reverberates off the stone all around you. “You aren’t a half-breed. There’s no such thing for dragons. You’re a feldragon, a natural-born one and, if I’ve got my myths correct, a true dragon as the humans call it.”

“A what?” Lynn asks, looking at you.

“A true dragon. It’s an old myth that describes humanoid dragons as being the true form of dragons and the bestial form being a sign of weakness,” you say. “I imagine it was just a way of insulting dragons for the humanoid races, given the general inferiority to gigantic magical, fire-breathing monsters that could live for centuries.”

“More or less, but it still always struck a chord with dragons,” Syl says, lowering her body so that her enormous head lay next to where you are standing. “Now, do you want to ride atop me like a true Imperator or be carried like a princess by Lynn?”

“I’ll be gentle, Talon,” Caitlyn says with a wicked grin, flexing her claws as her tail swishes around playfully.
