Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You’ve been able to do weird things all your life, but only in the past year have you started to understand why. Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are a hellborn – part mortal, part demon. Ever since you ran into a family of demon hunters, a lot of weird (but cool) stuff has gone down. You’ve battled rogue generals, joined the a baron’s conclave of demonic advisers, and dueled landmasters. You maybe even met a real live dragon – though you’re not a hundred percent on that one. But perhaps most surprisingly, you successfully graduated high school.

Now it’s time for you to spread your as-of-yet figurative wings and figure out what the hell you’re going to do with your life, or if you want to do anything with it at all. Luckily, you and your friends are planning a road trip to end all road-trips – you know, before they all go away to all their random colleges and stuff.

Before you can pile in a car and ride into the sunset, though, you’ve got a couple loose ends to tie up.

---

Without school or scheduled work to keep you down, you’ve been doing a whole lot of nothing. Even the conclave has been pretty dead. Most local demons (and other parties) acknowledge Waldric’s authority in the Bay Area, due to his savvy charisma and the powerful conclave backing him.

Of course, there’s a lot of room between ‘most’ and ‘all’. Threats to Waldric’s authority persist on the hell-side of things. While a few of them are just random demons who threaten themselves more than anybody else, there’s still a sizable faction working for the Stygian Countess, Ushologuissa.
>>
>>39837549

You’ve never met the old Ushola, of course. It’s impressive how much loyalty she inspires, given she’s a couple planes of existence distant, and probably spends her time chilling on the banks of the Styx, with adoring consorts lining up to have their heads bitten off.

Political business keeps your little bit of paradise safe. Few in hell are willing to draw the ire of the Archduke of Mardusia, who guarantees your fief’s independence. Out of all the conniving nobles, kings, regents, and chiefs down below, however, it’s pretty damn annoying you got stuck with Ushola. While her assassins and troublemakers are poorly trained and their plans borderline incompetent, the sheer number and persistence of the saboteurs has a way of wearing down your patience.

Some people don’t know when to quit.

Which makes it kind of suspicious that Waldric hasn’t needed your help with anything for a couple weeks now. You’re usually on his short call list when things go bad.
>>
>>39837562

Maybe the Countess did know when to quit?

But it’s whatever. You just have to live through a couple more days before kicking off your epic road journey legend voyage. Or rather... ride through a couple more days?

You are currently curving down Lombard street on your motorcycle, basking in the rushing wind and the scents it carries. Summer’s brought a whole hell of a lot of tourists to San Francisco, but you didn’t let that dissuade you from taking a ride down the picturesque road.
You zip out of the end of the snaking road, and ride down hill. You overtake a whole bunch of cars, taking advantage of your bike’s maneuverability to squeeze by on the crowded city streets.

You like driving around. It helps clear your head. But your head’s clear-ish now, and you find yourself thinking more about destinations than aimless motorcycling.

I wonder when we'll actually get to check out Halth in person?
>>
>>39839700
We already did. It was a frozen snake-infested shithole and we left within 10 seconds of arriving.
>>
>>39839700

We have, if you mean for longer than 10 seconds, when we decide to become Imperiate

>>

>>
>>39839700
Halth is basically Mars but with breathable air.
>>
>>39839813
We might not even want to be boss. For all we know, they might not even have in-door plumbing.
I mean, who wants to be Emperiate of a third-rate plane that probably doesn't even have the Internet?
>>
>>39839876

Fuck this merc thing, lets just Imperiate.

See how that's a useless statement that doesn't actually do anything? You have to say WHY that's a good idea.
>>
>>39839876
Then why not buy said internet?
Or plumbing?
I'm sure there must be something like that if multiple worlds existed?
>>
>>39840098
Stop that
>>
>>39840098

Ultimately i think Imperiate is a long term thing, if we decide to, while merc is a career job thing, we do it until we want to do something else. and to get stronger.
>>
Or we could, I dunno, try to make Halth less of a shithole? Is that a good goal? It's not like it'd be hard for us to travel back and forth. All we gotta do is find a landwell there and we can teleport between planes easy.
>>
>>39840198
I agree. The two don't have to be mutually exclusive, at least not for right now.

>>39840201
This. Make Halth not suck. Make it the envy of every other plane.
>>
>>39840017
It's a whole plane. With whole planets and stuff. And galaxies. Xan&Xath are from a third-world country, but there has to be at least one place in Halth that's not nightmarish.
Verwelkia holiday, anyone?
>>
>>39840227
how about we import the glory of internet and plumbing to that plane?
I remember reading that not all demons are murderous demons, surely they would appreciate stable society?
>>
>>39840153
That'd be rad, just dragging Hell into the 21st century.
Or hell, maybe Sierra will like getting all medieval on some fools on the field of battle way more natural and enjoyable that, say, attending an art school or whatever.
That would actually be interesting, if we went to Halth and Sierra lost stress way more easily, or it naturally drained from her or something.

While you do feel like you should stop by Vikrama’s sometime so you and her and everybody can get to plotting the roadtrip deal, going over there now wouldn’t really be the best idea. Rowan’s still down at Stanford doing whatever BS thing they’re doing, and Moriah takes time to mobilize. You don’t feel like lounging around for hours right now.

And besides. You’re responsible now, or at least you’ve maybe persuaded Waldric that’s the case. You know enough about Isaac and Waldric’s general comings and goings to know they’re having one of their powwows right now. Might be a good idea to check in and see what’s the new thing that’s going wrong, so you’re not surprised when you get back from your upcoming absence.

You steer yourself down to Waldric’s lair. It’s a nice drive, except for almost getting run over by a truck. People are the worst drivers.

A while later, you’re heading up the too-many stairs that lead to the apartment, helmet underarm. You decide to send Wolfgang a text, telling him to meet you there. He needs to get some distance between him and his dad, in your opinion. Nobody should be working in an office on a day like this.

You step up to the door to the apartment, a fancy studio thing on the top floor of an old complex. A bunch of miscellaneous potted ferns flank the doorframe, probably to ward off potential intruders.

Finding the door unlocked, you go ahead and let yourself into Maviel’s house. Or maybe Maviel and Waldric’s house? You’re not clear on the details, but after Waldric’s apartment exploded, you’re pretty sure he all but moved in with his fiancée.

The apartment smells like paint. Not run of the mill paint, though. The aroma bears touches of texture, dyes, and whatever else it is that goes into paint. Then there’s the smell of Maviel’s lavender conditioner, Waldric’s airy cologne, and a trace of Isaac’s sawdusty aura.
>>
>>39841799

You step around the corner of the entry and see about what you expect. Isaac and Waldo are over by a window overlooking the street, intent in discussion. Maviel’s out of sight, but you can feel her over in the other room, feeling kind of somber and focused. Maybe she’s painting?

Paintings, photos, and weird knick-knacks adorn the walls. You get the feeling they all represent original artwork.

“- Mermenes have me running all up and down the coast,” Isaac’s saying. “The timing’s convenient, to say the least.”

Waldric maintains a neutral look. “The Stygians aren’t looking to partition their claims with anyone or anything,” he says. “Of the countess’s myriad charms, you can rely on her greed.”

Isaac notices your entrance. “Hello, Sunshine.”

>I thought you were supposed to keep these clandestine meetings somewhere all clandestine. Maviel’s probably eavesdropping on everything you say.

The Lawn Strikes Back!
>>
“Steve Rogers, sup,” you say, stepping over and flopping down on the sofa. It’s an old, tattered thing, which makes it even more comfortable. You doubt Waldric had anything to do with its selection.

Waldric gives a humored snort, turning toward you and sending his silken hair cascading over a shoulder. “There is sarcasm here,” he says, as if pointing out an obvious truth.

“Captain America is a great man,” Isaac tells Waldric, leaning back against the window frame and folding his arms. “It’s a flattering comparison.”

“He’s a true patriot,” you say, purposefully ambiguous.

Waldric shakes his head. “Isaac calling you sunshine. That’s irony,” he explains.

“There’s nothing ironic about it,” says your legal guardian, his expression stern.

You snicker at Isaac’s defensiveness. “I’ve got a theory the only reason he calls me sunshine is cause Ro never let him get away with it,” you tell Waldric in a conspiratorial tone. “She hates dumb nicknames. He’s just looking for an outlet for his lame dadliness.”

Isaac gives you a look of disapproval, but Waldric’s eyes gleam. “So you let Isaac to call you whatever dumb nickname he likes?”

Something about his mocking tone gets under your skin. (+2 Stress: 22) “That’s not what I meant,” you reply.

“If you don’t like it, you could ask him to stop,” he says.

“I don’t care,” you say dismissively. “I mean. It’s not like I don’t not like it. Or it is, but – whatever. I don’t like you twisting my words around.”

Isaac smiles. “You owe Sierra a break,” he tells Waldric. “I know she’s been doing good work for you.”

“Boom. Right there,” you say, pointing at him.

“Breaks are hard to come by in my line of work,” says Waldric.

“Whatever. You’ve got a demonbane watching your back. Biggest break ever,” you say dismissively. “Anyway, so these fish,” you add, directing the statement to Isaac loudly enough to make it clear you’re interested in their earlier, secret conversation.
>>
>>39843173

“I thought you and all those mermaids had an agreement. You know, the kind where you smash their gills in if they mess with your crap.”

“It might be time for a new agreement,” Isaac says, sounding disappointed. “Hassatur never liked the old one.”

Hassatur’s some weirdo sea-thing. Like Poseidon, you guess. Besides fighting demons (which he doesn’t do that much anymore, since the conclave took over), Isaac does a lot of work pulling coast guard duty. Apparently, the Pacific Rim is kind of a hot spot for magical aquatic shenanigans. Until they get the Jaegers on station though, Isaac’s the one that deals with the brunt of it.

“Isn’t it harder for them to do stuff now, though?” you ask. “I mean, with all the demons working with you, it’s kind of a crappy time to push the whole ‘claim dominion over the beaches’ thing.”

“The fief is in a precarious position,” says Waldric. “If something were to slip, we’d lose all we’ve accomplished.”

“Our friends in the sea know weakness when they see it,” Isaac adds.

“When they sea it,” you say, sniggering.

Isaac takes a moment to get back on his line of thought. “They had a hand in the abduction of your emissary,“ he tells Waldric. “You can’t overlook that.”
>>
>>39843200

“I’m not overlooking anything,” says the baron, “but now isn’t the time to escalate the situation. What we need to do is retrieve the emissary, without looking like we were involved. Hassatur gets to think his ploy failed due to chance, and we get to bulletproof the Archduke’s emissary against future threats.”

>What makes you think Hassatur's got his fins in this one? And how dangerous fish king exactly? He's got a lot of fish on his side sure, but you smacked him down last time, yeah?
>I don't get it. Why not just have Ranthix roll in there with his sidekicks and execute a slick SWAT hostage rescue?

Just had a look at Sierra's character sheet. Apparently, the armored Slogbuh enjoys belly rubs.

How adorable!
>>
Okay, so let's look at the facts.
Hassatur is a big deal around the water-side.
We hates the water and have traumatic memories of things in the water.
The fucker is names Hassatur. In case you aren't familiar with it, the king in yellow has a very similar name that shall not be directly invoked.
Also seamonsters in general. That noise grinds rubs me all kinds of wrong ways.
So with half the lovecraftian mythos sitting on the one side I feel it's safe to say we should stay far far away from the coast.
>>
>>39844009
I bet he's made out of scissors
>>
>>39841819
This is super late but
>Sunshine

Oh my god that is so adorable. Isaac is truly the best
>>
>>39844057
We should casually call him and the rest of the Hallow's mom, dad, etc. at random, then act like we never said anything.
Could Sierra be Tsundere for family members?
>>
>>39844116
>Sup Dad
>What?
>Huh what? Did you said something?

Naw, Sierra's secretly super happy Isaac calls her Sunshine. If she wasn't trying so hard to be cool all the time, she'd be exploding with happiness.

That's what I think anyway
>>
>>39844009
Wait a minute, if I'm right, didn't something go down in korea a while ago? What if that guy had to do something with it?
>>
>>39844134
God, that's just sickeningly cute to think about.
And horrifyingly depressing.
Her best father-figure is the one that tried to kill her as soon as he saw her.
>>
“So let me see if I got this straight,” you say, rearranging yourself on the couch so you’re laying over the armrest. “Mermaids help Stygians make you look ultra stupid. I get why I’d want to do that, but for some reason, I don’t think they’re me,” you say.

“There are two things holding our realm together,” says Waldric. “The first is my reputation. I’ve proven myself capable of standing up to foreign influence. The second is the Archduke’s support, which hinges on his reputation.”

“This abduction is a public relations nightmare,” Isaac adds, cutting in. “Hassatur wants us fighting each other so no one worries about him. He knows this conclave stands or falls with Waldric’s word, so that’s what he’s going after. Taking away the pawn of a major supporter makes it look like your conclave can’t protect its own.“

“Well that,” you say, “and I bet Archduke’s won’t be happy his dude got nabbed. Probably makes him look bad. That kind of gossip’s what keeps court rats up at night.”

“Sierra’s right. The real danger from this situation is that the Archduke loses face,” Waldric agrees. “He’s out on a limb supporting us. We can take losses as long as we have the duke’s favor, but whatever happens, we can’t give him reason to withdraw his support.”

“So what’s stopping you from calling in a Ranthix strike and being done with it?” you ask. “If we’ve got any VIP’s besides me, the emissary’s got to count. Something about just cause and judicial application of force and all that, right?”

Waldric looks sideways at Isaac. “The objection on that count comes from the Marshal,” he says.

Isaac’s expression is grim. “Hassatur will escalate the situation only if we give him cause,” he says. “He’s a manipulator. He doesn’t like force. Doesn’t like the attention it draws. If we opposed him outright though, he would feel forced into taking more active measures to achieve his ends.”
>>
>>39843257
>Why don't you call in Ranthix?
>So you lost the emissary? How did that happen?
>Have any blood?
>No vampire jokes though
>>
>>39844200

“So, he’s the guy who always tries to push just a little harder than whatever he’s up against,” you say. “That’s kind of dumb though. I mean, if you’ve got a gun and the other guy’s using a knife, there shouldn’t even be a fight.” You know this from experience.

“We fight wars all the time, even when we’ve got a thousand a-bombs ready to go,” Isaac replies.

“Well, I guess you don’t drop nukes on every battle,” you concede. “Still though. Magic’s not nukes.”

“It might as well be, for the things you could do with it,” Isaac says. “Hassatur is very old, and very clever. I’d rather not push him. You don’t get that much power without being paranoid as heck, and him erring on the side of caution could mean a lot of trouble for us.”

“What makes you think Hassatur's got his fins in this one?” you say.

“I have it on good authority,” says Waldric, adding in his two bits of wisdom.

“You’re welcome!” Maviel shouts from the next room over.

“Huh. She was eavesdropping after all,” you say to yourself.

“Anything you say to me, you can say in front of her,” Waldric says.

Isaac nods in agreement. “That’s the way it should be,” he says.

“Okay okay, enough spouse junk. Back to fish nukes. Does it really matter if Poseidon-lite’s involved when push comes to shove? You smacked him down last time, yeah?”

“I did. And I might be able to do it again,” says Isaac. “But I’m a clever old guy, so I’m paranoid too. I only have so many tricks, and Hassatur knows a lot more of them now than he did back then. I can’t guarantee who would win between me and him. I’d rather win the fight without ever seeing him.”
>>
>>39844216

“Hard to imagine somebody who could give you a run for your money,” you say.

“They’re more common than I’d like to admit,” says Isaac. “Not even I can fight everything out there.”

“Well. I’m sold. Sounds like a secret mission to me,” you say. “And, you know. Secret missions are my thing. You got any personal effects of this guy?” you ask Waldric. “You know, maybe a pair of his socks? A hair? Or... a drop of blood? Blood would probably be best, actually. The other stuff is actually kind of useless.”

“Blood can be provided,” Waldric states.

“She just graduated last week. Let one of your flunkies handle this,” Isaac tells the Belphegoran. “Or better yet. Own up to your mistake and fix it yourself. I’ve seen you be subtle.”

>Maybe some hands on work’ll show you’re not afraid of rolling up your sleeves when you need to, Waldric.
>No, I’m all for being all dangerous. It’s no problem, so long as he’s not off underwater someplace. And I get to stay on land.
>Or... maybe you could help out instead? I mean, who’d expect a demonbane to rescue a demon? They’d never suspect a thing, guaranteed.
>Pfft. It’s not like I’ll be alone on this one. I’ll take a buddy. (?)

Us doing more for the conclave gives us more pull. If we make it seem like Waldric can't get the dirty stuff done without us, it get us brownie points and a little more respect.

What could possibly go wrong?
>>
“No, I’m all for being all dangerous and stuff. So long as he’s not being held underwater someplace, and I get to stay on land, actually sounds like a lot of fun,” you say. “Or uh. I mean. Really important. Oh yeah.”

Isaac laughs. “You’re not fooling anyone here with that act,” he says.

You feign a look of confusion. “What act?”

Waldric sighs. He is not so entertained.

You get an idea.

“Hey, you know, it’s not like I have to do it all solo,” you say. You reach over and jab Waldric in the ribs, just barely able to reach him from your couch-bound position. “Maybe I’ll get the big boss himself to come along, you know, all buddy cop like with the Gracies. Maybe some hands on work’ll show you’re not afraid of rolling up your sleeves, right Wally?”
>>
>>39844679

Waldric removes himself from range of your jabbing attacks. “As much as I would love to stroll into a Stygian den and curse the lot with unending agony,” he says, “Isaac’s point still stands. We’re not in a position where we can antagonize our water-bound friend. I’m recognizable.”

Isaac seems annoyed with the line of reasoning, but surrenders to it. “Seeing an active baron might mollify the Styigans, but it could just as easily give Hassatur the idea he needs to double up his efforts.”

>I have a good feeling about this. Trust me.
>>I never said anything about anybody seeing Waldric. We can be subtle. We can be so subtle.
>>Not if we shook things up somehow. If it just looks like Waldric got lucky in the rescue, then it doesn’t make it look like he’s a threat to Hassatur.
>You guys are lame. You want to sit this out, fine. I have other better people who can do anything.
>>See if Ulam can come along. No violence necessary. You know, maybe. And if there is, you'll have a giant crab on your side.

Not related to the matter at hand, but I'd like to throw out a suggestion for the road trip.

Mount Diablo isn't that far from here. Seems like a good spot for a landwell, and with a name like that it seems like a place Sierra would at least want to check out.

All the most famous mountains and ranges have a landwell.

I want to believe.

Climbing Mt. Everest to get a landwell.

Strolling up Mt. Fiji to chill with a super old landmaster who ain't worried about nothing.

Probably some fuck-off old landmaster on one of the poles who has been there since the ice age.

Roald Amundsen will be the landmaster of the South Pole in my head-canon, until Lawngod directly states otherwise.

Oh oh both Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen could be alive and kicking! I fucking love this, explorers is one of the few historical things my country can be really patriotic about. And if every mysterious mountain is a landwell they would be fucking stacked!
>>
>>39850009
Nansen would be less likely because he died in Norway.
Amundsen, on the other hand, disappeared while undertaking a rescue mission on the North Pole. His body was never recoverd, and only bits and pieces of the plane was found.
>>
>>39850467
Huh, i never bothered to check how they died.

But Nansen was both smart and a very public figure. He might have wanted to fake his own death in order to make his eternal youth less conspicuous.

And if that about Amundsen is true then he was definitely a landmaster.
