It's taken a bit of work, but you currently are being trailed by a small pile of wolves.
Five of them- And more importantly, they are clean and happy.
You can't think in formatting, but if you could, the happy there would have been bolded.

Because dealing with them moping around was a pain, and having them flip to cheery and relaxed in the wake of accepting you as their new alpha, and the village as their new home was a wonderful turn of events.

Of course, there's still work to be done.
Mostly packing at this point- the caravans should be arriving any time now, and when they leave, you'll travel with them.
Your mental checklist is coming back positive for the moment, though-

Nin met her family, said goodbyes. Check.
Siblings settled or settling down. Check.
Dad is writing an autobiography in place of a letter of introduction. Check.
Mom probably won't chase down the caravan and drag you away. Check.
Signed up with the guild so you can work. Check.
Ezzy's health and sleeping patterns seen to, as well as meeting with her family. Check.
Wolves dealt with. Mostly check.

You're doing pretty good so far. The week was a bit hectic, but, y'know. Hard work and all that has seen you through.

Of course, if there's one thing you've come to realize, it's that regardless of world or shape or whatever-
The reward for hard work is usually more hard work.

>Take your new wolves to the guild- A few introductions will do good.
>You can sign them up, probably- They'll be fed and housed when you're gone that way.
>Building them a house would probably be easier. They can take jobs, but they should be self-sufficient.

Your companions, new and old alike, trail behind you as you meander through town, working your way towards the guild.

Sheszka marches along, her back steel straight, pride suffusing every ince of her body-
And you aren't the only one to notice. The other wolves are watching her with some sort of mix between awe and jealousy, padding along in her wake.
Nin, on the other hand, is seated behind you with her arms crossed, huffing inelegantly about your apparent assault on her attempts to revive the monarchy.

You regret nothing.

The guild looms ahead, and entirely inappropriate word to assign to the squat, inn-like building. You press on, the doors swinging open as you storm the eating hall, your new and rather tiny pack at your heels.

Or they would be, if you had any. Which you don't. Because you are a giant spider.

The hall fills with vaguely worried glances at the sudden upswing in its monster population- all of which fade to placid shrugs as they realize you're leading the convoy, turning back to meals and conversations, or whatever else they were distracting themselves with.
You smirk lopsidedly, and head for the half-elf currently holding her head in her hands atop a wide table.

Her companions grin at you even as they continue talking to her-

"It's a new class, isn't it? And hidden even." The man sounds like he's trying to reassure her- Cliff, you think?
Yes, you're pretty sure that's right. You scared him in training and all that.
>>
>>39873249
Lann, on the other hand, groans in response.
"How does this sort of thing even happen? Why?"
The other adventurers just shrug in a circle, each turning to the next. You can barely hold back your laughter.
"Just how it works, innit? Y'do stuff, and you get classes and such."

"But- I mean-"
"Yeah, yeah. You got visitors, anyway. A whole pack of 'em."
The table groans collectively before one man punches cliff solidly in the shoulder, and Lann turns around.

"Good afternoon, yes."

You smile gently at the archer rubbing her temples, gesturing broadly to your sides.
"Hello, Lann. These are my wolves."

She flips her legs free of the bench, turning and crossing them on the other side, leaning against the table behind her.
"Wolves- Did you? No. Of course you did."

You tilt your head to one side.
"Of course I did what?"

She groans again.

"You took all the wolves out of the shed. What're you even going to do with them?"
You smile wider.
She blinks slowly at your fang-filled grin, then her feet start to kick off the floor, pushing her upright from her slouch, her hands already waving in front of her as she tries to shake her head.

"No- No, no, no way-"
Cliff interrupts before she can really get started, leaning over the table and grabbing her shoulder.
"Hey, hold up. Isn't this perfect?"
"In what way is this perfect? At all?"
"What? You were just talking about-"

You drop yourself into the conversation as well, curiosity overcoming any manners you'd feel like displaying.
"Just talking about what?"
Lann's eyes flick nervously side to side-
And then her friends fill you in anyway.

"She picked up a hidden class, apparently."
"A... hidden class?"
"Monsters grow and change and all that, right? Humans and elves and dwarves have jobs and classes."
"I see."
"Yeah- I'm a swordsman and tracker and guard. Mikhael has smith, that sort of thing."

It's a bit of a weird way to quantify education, then? Or something more magical. Probably the second.

"So what do they do?"
"Abilities and stuff like that. Make you stronger, faster, all sorts of things. I can cut things with the wake of my sword, or make things I'm trying to find glow in my sight."
"Oh! What can you do, then?"

You spin the conversation back to your friend, who is currently running a hand through her hair, sighing.
>>
>>39874528
"What can I do?"
"Yes."
"Eh. Wind won't affect my arrows. I can... feel where I need to shoot them to hurt something. And then there's my... new class."
"The hidden one."
"Yeah."

You wait patiently as she straightens up in her seat again.

"I- uh. It's called Ranger. And it lets me fight... better beside monsters."
"Better?"
"Supposedly, I can mimic monster powers."
"So could you hang from the ceiling if you were working with me?"
"I'd really rather not try."
"Fair enough, yes. Why was that disappointing?"

She shrugs, struggling to put it to words.

"It's not... disappointing. Not really. Hidden classes are stupidly rare. And actually getting one is... Ugh. I don't know. Picking this up just as you leave makes it seem like someones laughing at me, y'know."
You nod.
"What- Really?"
"Do you know what happened after I finished that dungeon with everyone? The morning after?"
"Uh-"

"I grew, yes. Right after I finished risking my life, I got stronger. Which is, I suppose, the way it works? Like it is a reward. But I still think I could have sued it earlier, yes."
"Yeah. I get that."
"Mhm."
"Alright. Why don't you introduce your new friends."

The wolves line up with barely any encouragement, standing almost at attention, each giving their name in turn.
"Asarra."
"Reniz."
"Ferin."
"Kara, yes."
" 'm Oth."

You open your hands, one towards the wolves, the other to your half-elven friend.

"All of you- this is Lann, yes? She is someone who will speak with my authority when I am gone. You can go to her if you need help, or something explained."

Lann is a bit slow to nod, but the wolves take to it fast enough.

She stretches afterwards, and the wolves starting to look like they'd rather be exploring the building- You flag down your personal wolf.
"Sheszka, can you show them to the baths and the training grounds? Explain to them how it all works, yes? I would rather not hear stories about the male wolves in the women's baths or something."
She snickers before saluting, barking something at the crowd that has them falling into lockstep behind her with an almost machinelike precision.

Huh.

You prod at the elf again, getting a single, raised eyebrow for your efforts.
"I would like to talk, yes?"
"About how you pushed a small pile of wolves off onto me?"
"That is just silly. They already know how to hunt. I will either build them a house to share, or see about having the guild take them in. I wanted to ask your opinion on that."

She leans back, blinking.
"You want them to work for the guild? As full members?"
"It is one way to deal with it. They would get jobs, rooms and food- There'd be no risk of them over-hunting, yes?"
"I guess not."
"And if they didn't- Then they'd take jobs as they needed them, and live in whatever I built."
"I think you're oversimplifying it a bit."

"They're adults. They'll work and hunt and provide for themselves. I just need to set them up to do that."
"I guess. Keep them out of the guild proper, then- We can be reassigned if it's needed, and the fact that they really only answer to you might get in the way of things."
"They'll answer to you, too."
"And what happens when one tries to challenge me to lead or something?"

"You aren't me. And I think they are more concerned with staying here than being the alpha, yes."
"If you say so."
"I do."
>>
>>39876089
She shrugs. You nod.
"Anyway. I have more important things to ask, yes."
"Yeah?"
"If I am here, right now- Can you use spider powers?"
"I have no idea what spider powers would be, or if this qualifies as working together."
"Okay. Try and walk up a wall or something. Or call fire or earth. Those would be the big ones, wouldn't they?"

"Sure. Fine. As long as I don't start shooting web out of my butt or something-"
"You have the wrong sort of butt for it." Nin interrupts.

The archer rolls her eyes- both at the moth now propping herself up behind you, and at the adventurers around the room shifting into full gear, money switching hands, loud betting filling the air.

"This is stupid- stupid stupid stupid-"

She skips over the table easily, lining herself up against one of the beams holding the building, her foot pressing hard against the side as the room holds its breath-

Her foot comes free.
"Nah, nothing."
"Ah. No fire or anything either?"
"Doesn't seem like it. Maybe this isn't enough to count?"
"Maybe."

Lann throws herself back into her prior seat as you scratch your chin in contemplation.
"Maybe if you came with us, then? I bet all the powers would show up then, yes."
She bursts out laughing, brushing hair from her face as she shakes her head.
"Nice- Real subtle there, Lyra."
"Thank you, yes."

She grins at you, frustration gone from her face.
"I'd like to. Honestly. Caravan guarding is sixteen hells worth of boring, but seeing new things, travelling with friends- That parts all great."
"But?"
"Yeah, that's the big one."
"Well, people sit on it and things, yes. I am an arachne."
"Not yours. But, I can't go back to the elflands."
>>
>>39876105
"The wedding?"
"Pretty much. I don't know if it's still waiting there for me, or something. And I'd rather not find out. And I'm happy here, too. The forest is- It's nice, y'know. The harpies are great, the food is decent, the village is friendly. So come back sometimes, alright?"
"I plan to, yes."
"Good to hear."

Nin interrupts again, braced against your shoulders, her antennae flopping as she turns her head to get a better view at... something.
"Is there something wrong with your teeth?"
"My teeth?"

You lean in before they can start to argue, pinching her cheeks and pulling up her lip.
"Lahraa- whu err yuh-"
"Oh- Oh! Your elf fangs have grown in, yes!"
"MY WHAT-"

Lann yanks herself free from your hands even as money starts to move around you again, the moth bouncing against your shoulder and giggling outrageously.
The half-elf's hands slip across her face, into her mouth, probing and poking and-
"Holy hells I have fangs."
"I told you-"
"Elves aren't poisonous, you-"

A clatter of coin and cheering drowns you out as Lann starts to groan.

You laugh aloud amidst the cheering adventurers, Lann's bluster deflating.
You hoist her off the bench easily, pulling her to her feet with a grin-

"Come on, yes? Show me your fangs!"
"Ugh."
"Just think- soon, your human powers will come in. Who knows what you'll be able to do in the future!"

Lann sighs, shaking her head.
And then she raises her head, smiling wide, sharp-pointed teeth on display as more cheers rise through the bar.

You pull her into a rough hug while she protests, Nin cackling and playing along, her thin, pale arms wrapping over yours and hugging the belaboured adventurer right with you.
"Why. Why does this happen to me."

"Good luck, I think."
"This isn't-"
"It absolutely is, yes."
"Okay. Fine. Yes. I am lucky, but you are ridiculous."

"No, I am Lyra."
"Are you secretly an old man? It's okay, you can tell me."
"Did you realize you called them the elflands?"

She goes limp, laying back in your arms, her head leaning back, hair pooling over your chitin.
"I give up. You win. It's the elflands, I have elf-fangs, we're elfsisters. Elfelfelfelf."

Ask Lynn if she really wants to travel with us. I don't think we'd mind swinging back to pick her up after the elflands?

Or maybe try and arrange a place to meet her in X amount of time, if she's interested.

Go with Lann's suggestion of not signing the wolves up as full Guild members; don't want them being reassigned and split up.

This this this

Strip off her boots and throw her up high until she stops coming back down

The constant contact with us and stress of being repeatedly tossed in the air will no doubt trigger more spider abilities

We should tell our mother she has a new daughter, scare the crap out of her. Then bring up Lann's fangs.
>>
>>39877538
no, we should start encouraging humans to show off their flying abilities like jin.
>>
>>39877564

That one seems silly, they don't even have wings.
>>
>>39877872
they must take time to grow in, like elf-fangs
>>
So... what are the chances that Lann's new Fangs are a permanent feature?
>>
>>39878289
My guess, as long as she hangs around spiders, it may shift if she works with the wolves though. Just my guess.
>>
She's in a town full of harpies, she might have night vision.

Oh god, she's going to get stuck on night guard duty forever and blame us when we get back.

So, anyone want to place some bets on evos?
Jin and Sheszka ate getting close.
Lyrais getting close.

What are our next steps?
>>
>>39880092
I'm personally hoping to have Lyra get even BIGGER! Also did REQM die?
>>
>>39880092
Maybe something a bit more social spidery, we been doing a lot of socializing

>>39880122
I must disagree, were already quite big, and ReQM didnt die, apparently they are at an event or something. the God-Spider will be back in the night.
>>
>>39880122
>bigger
Pls no, any bigger and some things start getting hard to do.
>>
>>39880122
I also wanted Lyra to get bigger due to evo, but that was because of the whole "Queen shook mountains". But we can do that with our powers now, so just getting bigger with age is fine.
>>
>>39880092

Basically, I want her to go full blown elementalist spider. The way I'm picturing it, she wouldn't change must physically as a baseline with the next evo, maybe just gain some metal tracery to reflect her metal bending. What she would gain is better element control so that she could basically armor herself in her element, becoming a larger, molten and/or metal spider of death when she needs to.

Giant magma spider busting out into really fast, highly durable metal spider would be cool.
>>
>>39880431
A metal crown that keeps reforming if she doesn't pay attention.
>>
>>39880480

A bit of shape metal with a will of its own would be a fun addition. Elementals are a thing.
>>
>>39880480

The pointer the angrier? or hungrier.
>>
>>39880480

Only if it reacts to Nin's trouble making.
>>
>>39880540

> Lyra summons giant ball of metal to win a pitched battle
> "Hey, Lyra. There's a thing on your head, yes."
> "A thing?"
> "There is metal on your head."
> "I thought I had gotten rid of all of it..."
> Waves hand, metal goes nowhere. Continues waving hand more and more frantically until the metal lets out a high pitched peep.
> "Even the earth itself seeks to follow our benevolent queen!"
> "Not now, Nin!"
> "But..."
> "No buts, yes! I'm going to put it back where it belongs by... hand!"
> Keeps tugging at the metal, not realizing the shape its taking.
> "Nin? Nin? Why do you look so excited, yes?"
> "No reason, no reason at all my queen... hehehe!"
>>
>>39880677

This kills the spiderbutt.
>>
So, When we return after our journey to the elflands, how long before Lann demand recompense for the changes we have inflicted on her previously simple life?
>>
>>39881708
She's an adventurer a simple life was never in the cards for her.
>>
>>39881708

We offer to take her with us
>>
>>39881735
Was simpler, though. Then Lyra came along, swooped her off her feet, plied her with trips through the woods and fancy dresses (via her sister), and now Lyra is leaving her barefoot at the guild with a litter of puppies.

You better take responsibility when you get back, you giant spider-elf!
>>
Phoo, mother's day celibrations are tiring.

Hah, she'll never get any of the evidence to stick.

You hug her tighter as she rolls her two eyes.
Maybe she'll get more?
Probably not.

"Congratulations, yes!"
"On what? My first steps towards being some sort of forest predator?"
"What? You are a hunter, yes. You're already a forest predator."
"Huh."
"Yes?"

She pulls her head back up to face you.
"Didn't think about it like that, to be honest."
"That is fine, yes? That is normal, I think. But I am congratulating you on accepting your heritage."

She groans again.
"Gods. Gods above. Am I going to keep these when you leave?"
"Well, you'll spend time with wolves, yes? You might get wolf fangs, instead."
"Maybe."
"Mhm."

"Lyra?"
"Yes?"
"Where are you taking me?"
"Well, I need to sign the wolves up, yes?"
"So, let me go."
"No, no. This is quite comfortable."

You skitter towards the officer's hallway, your friend held in your arms like a child's doll, hugged to your chest.
You spare a glance for the roof as you pass by, the whole hall lower and smaller and generally claustrophobic for someone of your disposition.

And by disposition you mean size, because you are a giant goddamn spider.

Anyway, it's the closeness of the ceiling that draws your attention.
"Oh. I thought of something, yes."
"I'm afraid to ask."
"Maybe you couldn't climb walls because you were wearing boots."
"What."
"What if it is just your hands and feet?"

"I'm a little scared to find out, at this point."

You hold her up to the roof all the same.

Lann puts her hands to the ceiling overhead, palms flat to the wood- and you slowly let your hands down.
Lann comes with them, breathing a sigh of relief, brushing her hair back.

"Thank gods. Useful or not, I don't think I could've dealt with that."
"Er-"
"Lyra. Lyra, what is it. Lyra!"

Nin drops the bomb before you can, the smug little moth near glowing-
"You have eye markings on your head!"
"I HAVE WHAT-"
>>
>>39884918

You get a hand over her mouth before she can really start to rant, Edmund poking his head into the hall, confused and sort of drowsy looking.
"What the- Miss Lyra? Lann? What's going on out here?"
"Lann is freaking out about small things, yes. Could you write up contracts for five wolves, please?"

His face contorts in confusion, mouth forming the sounds of your sentence as he rolls it through his head again.
"Wait- The wolves? You want me to put the wolves who surrendered to work?"
"Yes?"
"Uh- Are the harpies going to be okay with that?"
"Yes? They already voted? Or whatever it is that harpies do. They will live in the village, follow the rules and help protect it."

He shakes his head.
"I have no godsdamned idea how the hell you manage all this."
"I have no idea how you have more paperwork than desk and are still sane."
"That's fair. I don't think I am, anyway. And you wanted more paperwork?"
"Please."

His door swings shut, and you turn back to the squirming elf in your arms.
"Lann, calm down please."
"MRRRMMRHRMRH!"
"You do not have more eyes."
"MMM DDNNT?"
"No. They look like small red tattoos, under your bangs. I will let go of your mouth now, yes."

"Haaah- haaaaah- I don't- I don't have four eyes?"
"No."
"I don't have six, and you're just being technical?"
"You have two eyes, Lann."
"Okay. And the others?"

You shake your head again.
"Just markings, yes? Like Sheszka has."
She relaxes slowly in your grasp breathing heavily.

>>39885182
Yeah she said no to the elflands and has a good reason.
>>
>>39885221
I gotta admit I totally want Lyra crashing Lanns arranged wedding and carrying her back to ADVENTURE!
That would be hilarious.
>>
>>39885261
Except that might have the guards trying to kill us which would be bad. only reason the guards here are so chill is cause of mom and the harpies.
>>
>>39885221

We should ask around about her, or just find her family and see if the marriageon the table, tell her family shes still alive, if she hasnt kept in contact. assuming she wants them to know.
>>
>>39885295
>Except that might have the guards trying to kill us which would be bad.
For the guards, mostly.
And I dunno, I kinda doubt they try to kill people for crashing weddings.
>>
>>39885295
What about the fact that we're a semi common occurrence that is usually followed by prosperity, profit, or some other significant benefit to the town (crab feasts, a new mine, a new bathhouse, etc.)
>>
>>39885295
>Guards stopping us from kidnapping Lanna back to adventure and away from her arranged marriage.

>Guards stopping us from kidnapping Lanna back to adventure and away from her job.

>Guards stopping us from kidnapping Lanna back to adventure and away from her nap.

>Guards stopping us from kidnapping Lanna back to adventure.

>Guards stopping us from kidnapping Lanna at all.

I don't know if you've noticed this or not, but we are a giant spider wielding primordial flame and dominion over the earth. The guards are just gonna have to suck it up and try to stop other, less amazing people.
>>
Calming elves!

Writing!
>>
>>39885367
I dunno, the venomous fangs of guard elves are awfully intimidating. We should not underestimate them.
>>
>>39885421
We're also half-elf, so we're probably immune to their elfvenom.
>>
>>39885352
Except they'd probably misunderstand, and no matter how badass you are you can still die if the other guy gets lucky.

>>39885367
These would be non city guards and elven. Probably a mage or two thrown in. Don't scoff, attrition is a bitch.

>>39885354
Only in our town, in other towns? They only know we're a monster of the giant spider variety.
>>
>>39884918

This. Don't leave someone while they're freaking out if possible.
>>
>>39885470
>and no matter how badass you are you can still die if the other guy gets lucky
Clearly then we should never fight anything ever again.
>>
>>39885470
What attrition? We're kidnapping, not waging war at the front door. This is a snatch and run operation.
>>
>>39885517
Not saying that, but 100 or so elvish guards attacking us is a recipe for pain.
>>
I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be a 100 elvish guards guarding a wedding. Not unless Lann is the next queen of all of elflands.
>>
>>39885532
Oh sure, it _starts_ that way. But then the fighting becomes drawn out, the scales keep increasing, and soon enough, Lann finds herself becoming this world's Helen of Troy in a war between the future Queen of the Forest and the city at the end of the land bridge.
>>
>>39886094

In the end the spiders win. always.
>>
You drag your much smaller- but still pointy-eared- companion back to the tables, setting up in the corner.

You fold your legs, dropping yourself to the floor and letting her fold into your arms, turning her to face away from you and leaving her to sit comfortably in your 'lap'.

She leans back against you, her breathing slowing with each heavy exhalation, the half-elf folding her arms over her chest.
You move to pat her head- But then, she's kind of an adult. Hm.

You settle for a very careful massage, your hands gently lying across her collarbone as your thumbs trace patterns over her shoulders and the knot that makes up her neck.

"Thanks."
"Mhm."
"I mean that."
"I know, yes? I understand that you might be freaking out a bit with the monster parts."

She leans forwards, giving you more room to work on her back, sweeping her hair forwards and exposing her neck.
"Yeah. I didn't really think the monster abilities thing would be... quite so literal."
"I did not either. I thought it would be more like Sheszka."
"Like Sheszka?"
"Wolves... take after their alpha, apparently."

She shifts sideways, her head drifting left as you work the right side. Nin has hopped clear of your back, sitting atop the table, legs kicking aimlessly as she answers the archer.

"Sheszka has the same eye markings."
"Yeah. The red ones."
"Mhm. And she has Lyra's fire. The literal fire."
"Jealous?"
"Only a little."

The elf appears to be melting, slowly leaning further and further forward as the tension leaves her. You are vaguely concerned that she'll fall asleep mid conversation, at this rate.
"Nothing to be jealous for, yes. You have your own abilities."
"They aren't yours, though."
"So? I do not have yours. And neither does Lann."
>>
>>39886268
The moth glances back to the elf, smiling.
"She has spent time near all of us- Maybe she'll be producing elf dust, too."
"I rather doubt it."
Lann grunts non-committally.

"Do you want me to check on your family?"
"Eh?"

That got her attention, the elf jolting a little upright before you press her down again.
"Your family, yes? Do you want me to try and find if your marriage is still waiting for you? Or see if there's any letters or anything for you?"
"I'll- I'll think about that."
"You do that, yes."

There's a bell ringing somewhere, an irritating clanging that carries on as you push Lann further and further towards sleep. Her head turns a little, eyes catching yours as she gives you a wry smile.

"That's the caravan arriving, then."
